I experimented with 20 diet pills…but it left me on heart medication for FOUR years – Manchester Evening News
Posted: May 12, 2017 at 1:43 am
A young woman who ended up on heart medication for four years after buying a pack of diet pills online is warning others about the dangers of quick-fix weight loss.
Natalie Jade Magill, from Hyde , was just 18, when she bought the pills online.
The now 26-year-old explained that at the time she had been holding down two jobs - working full-time in accounts but also doing promotion work for bars on weekends on the side - and felt under pressure to look a certain way.
I was really self conscious, she said, constantly comparing myself to other girls that I saw out. I wanted to lose weight quickly so I went online and started searching for fast weight loss tips and diet pills there were loads.
I came across this one website that was selling them really cheap, 20 for 60 pills which was enough for two months.
The reviews looked good, people saying how amazing they were and how well theyd worked, so I took that as meaning they were okay.
I never once questioned what was in them.
Just a week after she started taking them, Natalie started suffering heart palpitations as well as shaking and feeling constantly thirsty.
She added: At times it felt like I was running around at 100mph, it was so surreal, my heart was beating out of my chest.
I lost the weight I wanted to quite quickly in around three or four weeks and decided to stop taking the pills.
People did notice the weight loss, but I didnt tell them what Id done, I just told them I had been eating better.
I think part of the reason for that is because I knew it wasnt the best idea and I didnt want people to judge, I think also I knew deep down I didnt need to lose weight, and people would tell me that.
Despite stopping taking the pills after just a few weeks, Natalie continued to experience the side affects long-term.
Two years later, when she was 20, Natalie collapsed while home alone and woke up to find her self on the floor of the landing.
She was taken to hospital by ambulance, where she was hooked up to machines and drips as doctors tried to figure out what was causing her dangerously high heart beat.
They kept asking me questions like did I drink a lot of coffee, or drink a lot of alcohol, or take recreational drugs, the answer was no to all of them, and then they eventually asked me if Id ever tried extreme dieting.
Thats when it hit me, I put two and two together and realised it was the diet pills. When I first started having the side effects, I just thought it was because of the weight loss, I never thought more of it.
For the next four years, Natalie was on medication and underwent regular heart monitoring, but even now eight years on she still suffers as a result.
I still get anxious now and then, but I take care of myself, I eat well and Im very conscious of my health.
There is so much pressure nowadays to look a certain way like whats portrayed in the media, but the reality is a lot of that isnt real.
My advice to people is to love yourself and be confident in who you are. If youve not got your health youve not got anything.
Youre not invincible. I thought I was and I found out too late. Looking back I never needed to lose weight, I just wish Id realised at the time.
If you do want to lose weight, do it the safe way, and dont be embarrassed to see your GP either.
Pills such as the ones Natalie bought, along with other fake medicines, are becoming increasingly available online.
Last year, the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which regulates medicines in the UK shut down more than 4,000 websites offering such products.
A total of 13.6m worth of fake medicines and devices were also seized by Interpol.

"I was addicted to food," Ofa says. "I lovedfast food takeaways. I'd eat them three times a day.The yummierthe food, the more I'd eat. That's the problem with our culture,Tongansjust love food."
ALDEN WILLIAMS/FAIRFAX NZ
Ofa holds the pants that he wore when he tipped the scale at 220kg.
In a normal day before hislifestyle change, Ofa would eat 20 chicken bites for breakfast, drink a 1.5-litre bottle of fizzyat lunch and have afast food family feast for dinner.
With the weight came numerous health problems. He had diabetes, gout, kidney stones, high blood pressure, headaches and insomnia.
He took six pills a day to treat his conditions, but now all of those problems are gone. "I feel totally different."
At 17yearsold hewas awarded a rugby scholarship and movedfrom Tonga to New Zealand to play first XV rugby.
Shortly after the move he suffered aspinal cord injury while playing, bringing a halt to his active lifestyle. He stopped working out and "started eating".
In recent years he has tried several times to "get motivated", but after a few weeks of eating healthy he would return to his old ways. "But this time was different.I wanted to change my life."
ALDEN WILLIAMS/FAIRFAX NZ
He spends more than three hours in the gym every day, often visiting twice.
Throughout his journey a lot of factorshave given himthe strength and willpower to make alasting change.
From his family who help to cook healthy food, to his work mates who compliment him and hisidolDwayne Johnsonwho he aspires to.
"The one motivation that Idon't talk much about is the power of prayer. Ibelieve in God . . .I prayed for the strength to resist the temptation offast food andfor the the energy to go back to the gym after Ifinishwork.
ALDEN WILLIAMS/FAIRFAX NZ
Ofa has beat his fast food addict thanks to his strong mindset.
"But at the end of the dayit camedown to me, whether I wanted to change or not. That was the main thing, Iwanted to change.
"Now someone can eat KFC right next to meand it doesn't bother me. I'll eat an orange instead."
A typical workday routine sees him wake at 7am, and eat oats and fruit for breakfast. After dropping his children off at schoolhe hits the gym for three hours before starting work at midday. Most nights he'll head back to the gym after work at 10pm.
ALDEN WILLIAMS/FAIRFAX NZ
He is now inspiring friends to join the gym and gets a kick out of showing them the ropes.
During the day he'll eat up to 16 boiled eggs, a roast chicken and plenty of fresh fruit.
"Ifind it hard when people ask me what my goal weight is. Idon't have one, it was never about the weight on the scale. Iexercise because it'swhat Ilove.
"Many people ask me when my cheat day is and Isay to them 'Idon't have a cheat day or a cheat meal'. This is a lifestyle change, Idon't want to eat bad.
"I think weight loss is just a good side effect of having a good lifestyle."
A lot of people ask Ofa for the secret to his rapid weight loss. In return, he asks them to join him at hisgym, Anytime Fitness,so he can show them his workout routine. He's now motivated a number of work colleaguesto join the gym.
But in total honesty he says the gym isn't his secret, it'shis mindset.
"I think the mostimportant thing is to be your own inspiration. People wait for something else or someone else to inspire them to take that first step.
"Iam my own inspiration. I did it. I am my own hero. Once you become your own inspirationit comes from within you."
Throughout his lifestyle journey Ofa hasdone a lot of reading and research to learn about "theright food to eat to keepfull andwhat exercise to do to loseweight faster".

Trigger warning: This article contains content that may be upsetting for some readers.
It's a common assumption: Weight loss is positive, weight gain is negative. In reality, there are countless reasons people change size. What's more, happiness with your body and happiness in general doesn't hinge on the number on the scale, which one woman's powerful recent Instagram post is now highlighting.

Last week, Instagrammer Hannah Foster shared a post featuring two images of her in bathing suits. The image on the left, she wrote, is from 2012, shortly after Foster had lost a significant amount of weight. "[The girl on the left] was in a nasty relationship, living abroad and lonely, and despite losing weight STILL HATED HER BODY," she said . "Losing weight won't make you love yourself."
Foster added that the girl on the right side of the photo weighs more but has a much healthier relationship with her body. "Pic on the right is after 25 years of realizing that losing five pounds won't make me a better person, it won't make me like myself, and most importantly it won't make me happy," she wrote . Foster said that she now heads to the gym and eats well, but not for weight loss: "It's because I only get one body and I want to use it as long as possible."
Foster also spoke to Yahoo! Style about her body image journey, and she has important advice for others navigating their relationships with their bodies. "The turning point for me was talking with someone about disliking my body and she said, If you talked to another person the way you talked to yourself, you would seem like the most horrible, nasty person. Youre not a horrible, nasty person, so why do you treat yourself that way?" Foster said . "This just blew my mind." Now Foster's dedicated to spreading this message of self-compassion on her own Instagram.

Jordan Kohanim, 38, of Roswell lost 70 pounds – Atlanta Journal Constitution
Posted: May 10, 2017 at 6:45 pm
Jordan Kohanim, 38: From 190 pounds to 120 pounds
Former weight: 190 pounds
Current weight: 120 pounds
How long shes kept it off: I have kept it off for about a year and half, says Kohanim.
Personal life: She is aNorthview High School language arts teacher and debate coach. She is married and lives in Roswell.
Turning point: In brief, I started my weight loss journey three years ago. I worked out irregularly that first year because I was exhausted after working two jobs. So by the time I hit the gym in the evening, I had little left to give to my workoutsMy diet consisted of yo-yo and guilt. Then, I won teacher of the year at my school, and they posted my picture with the award. They posted it to Twitter, the school TV show, Facebook. It was everywhere. I saw that picture and was mortifiedI talked to my father and asked for some advice. He told me about the 15-minute rule: Go to the gym and workout for 15 minutes. If you still feel like not working out, go home. If you go home after 15 minutes, you are not allowed to beat yourself up about it. You tried. You werent feeling it. Try again tomorrow. I followed the 15-minute rule. My workouts went from once or twice a week to five days a week.
Jordan Kohanim weighed 190 pounds at age 36 when this photo was taken in 2015. For the AJC
Diet plan: Cutting out sugar was the biggest transformer for me. Breakfast is an egg-white omelet with veggies and coffee. She snacks on veggies and nuts. Lunch is grilled chicken and gazpacho. Dinner is grilled chicken with veggies.
Exercise routine: I get up at 4:30 a.m. to get toOneLife gym. I call us the Dawn Patrol. Everyone is so friendly and encouragingI exercise six days a week. She started with the elliptical and moved to long-distance running which relieved anxiety. Now, I am working on building muscleI do HIIT training (high intensity interval training) three days a week and weight training with plyometric warmups.
Biggest challenge: My biggest challenge was the plateausMy body had become attuned to long-distance running and was trying to slow my metabolism in order to put the weight back on. There is a great deal of research about how your body tries to regain weight after a large weight loss unless you vary your routine. So, I had to change it up.
Atlanta's Mad About Fitness: Cardio and Tone Workout for any level with Madison James
How life has changed: I have so much more energy now. I work two jobs, so I sometimes go from 4:30 a.m. in the morning until 9 p.m. at night. So too, a debate coach has long hours. I used to be exhausted after those long days. Id come home, flop on the couch and eat junk and zone outreeling from how tired I felt. Now, I have more energyI enjoy doing things more because I am not so tired.

Cantor’s Daughter Sings a Song of Fitness – Atlanta Jewish Times
Posted: May 10, 2017 at 6:45 pm
Judaism and fitness were entwined for Desiree Nathanson growing up in Sarasota, Fla., and inevitably led her to open her own studio, Interfusion Fitness.
As the daughter of a cantor, Nathanson frequently accompanied her mom to synagogue and often served as a backup. But in addition to attending synagogue, Nathansons parents worked out every day.
After dancing with the University of Florida Dazzlers, Desiree Nathanson went on to become an A-Town dancer for the Atlanta Hawks.
I think that subconsciously shaped me and got me to where I am today, she said.
Nathansons father had a stroke before she was born. He was left partially paralyzed but continued to work and took on the role of a stay-at-home dad, doing the laundry, cooking, and driving Nathanson to dance recitals and Hebrew classes.
My fathers disability influenced me to be more inclusive of others in fitness and provide them with the opportunity to participate. My parents also made it a point to always have dinner as a family, which helped me realize the importance of bringing people together, Nathanson said.
She began dancing at 4 years old when her parents enrolled her at a YMCA. She later moved to Florida Ballet Art, where she spent two to three hours a day, six days a week, practicing jazz and modern dance.
By the time she entered high school, Nathanson was burned out. She quit the recitals but later returned to dance school.
After graduating from the University of Florida, where she joined the Dazzlers dance team, Nathanson became the official trainer for the Atlanta Hawks dance team. During her third year as an A-Town dancer, Nathansons old coach from Florida, Donni Frazier, asked whether she would be willing to train the Hawks team after she judged a few auditions and choregraphed some workouts.
Nathanson remains a member of the team, occasionally serves as a backup host during games and trains boot camps twice a week when her schedule allows.
Before acquiring her own studio, Nathanson taught for nine years at another location and offered personal training sessions alongside her fianc at private homes. After an old talent agent asked why she hadnt opened her own studio, Nathanson began looking for space.
Since opening Interfusion Fitness in Brookhaven, Nathanson has been determined to create an environment that is welcoming to everyone, regardless of shape or background.
We focus on strength and health as opposed to weight loss. We want to ensure that clients are exercising efficiently and safely while having fun, Nathanson said. I was tired of hearing people say they got hurt while exercising and wanted to change that. I never mention burning calories and think we shouldnt put too much on aesthetics.
In addition to teaching cardio, dance and yoga, Nathanson has offered a course in krav maga. Its been something we wanted to do, and my clients were very enthusiastic about the opportunity.
To help teach the course, Nathanson invited Matt Clanton from Griffin, who has a black belt in krav maga and elite defense tactics. The course taught us a lot about being alert, especially nowadays when everyone is on their cellphones, she said. I would like to schedule more classes since it sells itself and is very informative.
In addition to serving as a member of the board of the Eating Disorders Information Network for a third year, for which she participated in a celebrity dance challenge and won the judges choice award, Nathanson has written her own health and wellness book, Formula 5: The Five Fs to Better Health, has been involved in Atlanta Pride, and looks forward to partnering with Jewish organizations to help raise awareness of the importance of fitness.
Nathansons strong connection to Judaism and passion toward fitness have remained with her throughout her personal life and career.
Im a creature of habit, and the interests Ive adopted since I was 4 have stayed with me, she said. My Jewish upbringing has made me sensitive to other minorities, as I am often mistaken for not being Jewish. This in turn has made me want to educate others and become more inclusive.

Diet Doc Reviews The Boiled Egg Diet: Can it Really Help You Lose Weight? – Marketwired (press release)
Posted: May 10, 2017 at 6:44 pm
RALEIGH, NC--(Marketwired - May 10, 2017) - The Boiled Egg Diet claims rapid weight loss results of up to 24 pounds in just two weeks. Any version of the egg diet is very low calorie, is ketogenic and is high in protein. Carbohydrate consumption (including servings of fruit) is severely limited. Typically, the dieter will consume anywhere between 4-6 eggs per day, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A small salad, or another small serving of lean protein usually accompanies each meal.
Essentially, there are a few benefits to egg diets. High-protein diets tend to cause a reduction in appetite (at least in the beginning). This helps one to feel fuller longer and eat fewer calories overall, which normally leads to some weight loss. High protein diets also aid in enhanced protein synthesis, which increases the rate of caloric burn and naturally raises the body's metabolism. Eating eggs for breakfast has also been shown to increase weight loss due the fact that a high-protein breakfast helps one to feel satiated, and less prone to high-calorie snacking and drink consumption throughout the day.
However, there are also downsides to such a restrictive diet. Low-calorie diets cannot be sustained long-term due to their negative impacts on nutrition and energy. Exercise, which is necessary for optimal physical and mental health, is discouraged while on egg diets due to their low-calorie and low-carbohydrate count. Fatigue, irritability and mood swings are common with diets such as these, as is the tendency to binge eat. Overall, eggs are a great addition to any diet, but a comprehensive and healthy approach to nutrition is going to be the surest and safest way to achieve weight loss in both the short and long-term. Diet Doc, an industry leader in weight loss across the U.S., advises that individuals who need to lose weight seek out certified nutritionists and doctors for personalized strategies, rather than one-size-fits-all fad diets. ALEX MERRIAM lost half of his body weight naturally. This is how he did it.
At just 17-years-old, Alex Merriam weighed 25st.
While high school is a volatile place for the average teenager, Alex said being overweight during this period of his life left him depressed.
Now 21, Alex explained the moment during his second year of university that made him decided to make his lifestyle change and help him drop half his body weight.
GETTY
I got a really cool internship working for the State Department at the US embassy in El Salvador, Alex recalled.
My boss and I talked about my career aspirations, and he was like, You're on the right path in terms of your resume, but unless you get in shape, there's no chance you get a job in this field. Nothing matters if you can't pass the physical tests.
Alex said he began to lose weight by accident after being busy with work within six months he had lost 5st.
Amazingly, these reality TV stars have lost more than 40st between them... all thanks to healthy eating and exercise

Scarlett Moffatt shows off her weight loss
Before the weight loss, Alex said he would eat everything. If he ate biscuits, it wouldnt just be a few, it would be the entire packet.
It took Alex two years to lose the weight as he didnt want to cut anything out.
I wanted to have fun, drink with my friends, eat pizza. I was able to learn how to do that in a responsible way," he said.
Before, I just didn't have the mindset to eat two pieces of pizza. I'd eat half the pizza. Or for dinner instead of a salad I'd eat an entire frozen pizza.
After the first 5st weight loss, Alex explained his weight plateaued for four months. His initial weight loss had been without exercise, but once back in the US, he began to exercise every day.
An added benefit to the weight loss? A happier disposition.
I'm one of those people who's annoyingly happy now. I was never that happy a person, I guess. Now I'm the guy who's smiling all the time," he added.

Heaviest woman in the world facing health issues after weight-loss surgery – New York Post
Posted: May 9, 2017 at 11:44 am
Doctors treating an Egyptian woman believed to be have been the worlds heaviest before undergoing weight loss surgery said she is suffering from cardiac issues and bed sore infections. Eman Abd El Aty, who left an Indian hospital on Thursday for further treatment at a center in Abu Dhabi, was airlifted from her home with the help of a crane for the March procedure.
Abd El Aty, 36, has not walked in 25 years and at her heaviest, reportedly weighed about 1,100 pounds. She reportedly had lost more than 660 after undergoing the bariatric procedure, but doctors had warned about future complications due to her weak bones.
A team of more than 20 doctors is now treating Ab El Aty at Burjeel Hospital.
She is currently facing several health conditions, including a cardiac issue, which is still under intensive investigation; severe urosepsis [a bacterial infection complicating a urinary tract infection]; and third degree infected bed sores, a statement from the hospital said, according to BBC News.
The statement said doctors are focused on improving her condition and hope to have her sitting up with minimal to no assistance.
Her former doctor at Saifee Hospital, Muffazal Lakdawala, predicted that Ab El Aty is facing multiple surgeries to straighten her hips and knees, but had clashed with the womans family members during her hospitalization. A report by Mid-Day noted the hospital called authorities on Abd El Atys sister, Salem, who had accused the hospital of exaggerating her weight loss. Salim also claimed Abd El Aty was suffering seizures and was not stable enough to be moved.
Abd El Aty was placed on a special liquid diet to reduce her weight ahead of the bariatric procedure so that doctors could safely operate, BBC News reported.
