Pop Weight Loss Opens New Office – Hartford Courant

Posted: May 9, 2017 at 11:44 am

Pop Weight Loss marked the occasion of opening its new office at 74 New London Turnpike in Glastonbury with a ribbon-cutting on May 3.

Co-owner Kerry Potts said she and her partner have run the Old Saybrook office for three years, and that the company was started about 10 years ago in New Jersey, by ob-gyn Dr. Rebecca Cipriano, who felt that there weren't enough options to help her patients lose weight. The new office has been open about a month.

Potts and co-owner Donna Nucci are both registered nurses and all of the nutritionists have their masters in nutrition. Nutritionist Jennifer Thomas runs the Glastonbury office, along with new nutritionist Evelyn DeDominicis.

"We work one-on-one, in personalized programs using real food, telling you what you should be eating every day, to write everything down, and how much you should exercise. We hold you accountable. It's really working great for most of our clients."

Using food-based plans, the office is able to work with people with a variety of illnesses, including plans for people going through chemotherapy, trying to gain weight, dealing with diabetes, or people who want to lower their cholesterol.

Pop Weight Loss has had an office in Glastonbury for about the last year-and-a-half, but the new location will better accommodate the growing business.

"We finally found a good place to come," Potts said. "It's worked out great. More people can see us. I think location is everything."

Members of the CT River Valley Chamber of Commerce were on hand on May 3 for the ribbon-cutting.

Cipriano has published "POP: Burst the Diet Bubble and Finally Lose Weight," and the Pop Weight Loss offices are nationally franchised.

The program focuses on each person's needs, schedule, starting weight, and goals. Clients generally start by cutting out white flour and sugars, and nutritionists work with their clients' schedules to formulate a successful plan.

"We're really here to help people get healthy, exercise and be disease-free," Potts said. "The program really makes sure you're eating for your health. The industry is huge, in general, because people don't eat the right way, or don't know what to eat. There are a lot of mixed messages. That's why Dr. Cipriano started the program."

Lena Dunham Shared 20 Super Dark Weight Loss Tips – Bravo (blog)

Posted: May 9, 2017 at 11:44 am

In case you missed it: Lena Dunham is not interested in being the poster child for weight loss. The Girls star has shed some pounds, but she's been very open about the fact that it was anxiety and depressionnot some cult cycling classthat led to her new shape.

And what's more, Lena is dumfounded by the backlash she's received for losing weight. In a recent appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, the actress shared: "It's just so ridiculous because I spent six years being called 'bag of milk' on the Internet." Then, when she lost weight, Lena saw comments such as: "I thought you were body positive!"

For the record, she is body positivebut telling others how to get fit just isn't in her wheelhouse. So when a magazine splashed an image of Lena on its cover with accompanying text that read: "How She Gets Motivated," the star used her signature wit to share how, indeed, she does.

Lena took to Instagram to counter the cover line with politically charged "slim-down tips" such as: "an election that reveals the true depts of American misogyny," along with "constant sweaty dreams of dystopian future," and "worrying ceaselessly about the health and safety of women you know and women you don't." And for her final statement, Lena doubled down.

"I have no tips I give no tips I don't want to be on this cover cuz it's diametrically opposed to everything I've fought my whole career for and it's not a compliment to me because it's not an achievement thanx," she said, in summary. Any questions?

New Mother’s Day weight loss plan – Bangor Daily News

Posted: May 9, 2017 at 11:44 am

Sunday, May 14 is Mothers Day.

I remember my first official Mothers Day. My daughter was born on May 31 so she was almost a year old. I was more concerned with how much weight I still needed to lose than any of the festivities that go with honoring mothers on their special day. I cant say it made my day, and I definitely had my priorities mixed up. It kind of wrecked my first Mothers Day.

Me with my fourth daughter about a year after she was born. I weigh almost as much as I did the day I delivered her and she weighed almost 10 pounds at birth.

If youre like me you may be hoping to pull on those pre pregnancy jeans and zip and button them as though your body didnt just complete an amazing feat in the last 9 months.

I know some women actually do deliver a baby and look like they were never pregnant, but alas, I had 4 babies over the course of 8 years, and never experienced that even once. Each time I delivered, I was left with a belly that looked as big as though there were still a full-term fetus in there. The only difference it was no longer firm, it was jiggly.

It wasnt just the pregnant belly thing that had me worried about getting back my pre pregnant body, it was the number on the scale. Instead of losing all the weight gained over the last 9 months, the first time I stepped on the scale it was barely less than the birth weight of my infant daughter. Huh? How can that be?

Now, in retrospect, I realize that I wasted time worrying over something that didnt matter. What was my hurry to lose weight? My body had just gone through something amazing; it created a whole new human being. Why didnt I honor it for its marvelous ability to give me such a gift? Why was I unhappy with the way it looked?

I thought when this baby was out of my belly and in my arms Id look like I did before I got pregnant with her. I was so wrong.

It took more thana year to get off the weight gained while I was pregnant. I probably could have done it faster if I paid more attention to what I ate during the timeI was pregnant. The truth is a lot of my weight gain with each pregnancy had nothing to do with the baby. I (admit) I looked at pregnancy as a brief period in my life where I could eat fully without any restraints. Im going to estimate that my weight gain was 50% pregnancy and 50% letting go of any efforts to manage weight whatsoever.

In retrospect do I wish I paid more attention to what I was eating? No, I dont. I just wish I had realistic expectations about losing weight after delivery. I would like to have cared less about a number on a scale and had more faith that I would eventually get back to that number.

If youre reading this then youre probably a new mother and you want a weight loss plan to help you return to your pre pregnant weight. You may want to weigh less than you did when you got pregnant and are looking for a weight loss plan to make that a reality.

Here is my suggested new mother weight loss plan.

4 Important Lessons I Learned About Weight Loss From My Kids – POPSUGAR

4 Important Lessons I Learned About Weight Loss From My Kids

To learn tips and techniques for my own weight-loss journey, I've spoken to tons of experts, dietitians, fitness trainers, and people with personal experience losing weight. But really, I learned the most from two very giggly and often muddy unlikely sources my own two kids. What I've observed from watching their relationship with food and life in general has helped me lose the most weight and keep it off. Here are four tips I hope will help you, too.

It's been so ingrained in me to eat three meals a day and to eat those meals at certain times. Once the clock would strike noon, an alarm would sound off in my brain must eat lunch! At 11:45, I'd prepare lunch for my kiddos in those cute, four-section trays, and serve it at exactly 12 p.m. I'd call to the kids, "Lunchtime, come and eat!" And countless times they'd say, "We're not hungry." Wow. It took me years (my oldest is 6 1/2) to figure this out, to eat only if and when I was hungry, and not eat just because there's food in front of me or it's "time to eat." They've reminded it what it means to listen to my body, so it's OK if lunchtime doesn't happen exactly at noon.

My kids love having tea parties and picnics on the kitchen floor. And one day, my daughter handed me a Peppa Pig bowl and spooned some trail mix into it with a smile. Something clicked for me, about how my bowls and plates are so much bigger, and that means piling more food onto them and eating way more than I need to. I went out and bought some smaller-size bowls and plates (sans Peppa Pig) and when I use them, I feel satisfied but not stuffed. It's really helped me follow through with eating appropriate portion sizes.

Kids are very wiggly and fidgety, and they rarely sit in one place for long, unless there's a screen involved, of course. When music is on, they dance. When a story is being read, they act it out. They're always carrying things from here to there, building things, climbing things, and their mode of transportation is either skipping or riding a bike. They're full of energy and they're constantly on the move, and it's something that's helped me burn up some extra calories. On sleepy mornings, I throw on some Katy Perry or Justin Timberlake to get the kids up and dancing before breakfast. We take a postdinner walk around the neighborhood, and on weekends, we make a point to do something active, whether it's to hit the indoor trampoline park or go skiing or hiking.

But more importantly, I find ways to move more throughout my day when I'm alone, working from home. I hooked my standing desk up to my treadmill, go to the bathroom that's two flights of stairs up, and do some TRX or ab moves when I need a brain break. Keeping track of the steps I take each day has also motivated some extra movement. At night, instead of plopping myself on the couch watching TV, I try to do a little stretching or strength-training moves on the floor. While brushing my teeth before bed, I do this little two-minute tush-toning workout. Every little bit helps!

"Finish your dinner," I heard coming from my mouth, the same words I remember hearing my own mother say to me. "Why?" my 4-year old asked. "I'm full." My husband chimed in and said, "Don't you want to be part of the clean-plate club?" But what we were both saying went against everything I've always told my kids, to listen to their bodies and do what feels right to them. So I abandoned that I idea and now I say, "Eat until you feel like you're full," and I follow the same rule too. I give myself an appropriate portion, and try to eat slowly to enjoy (not inhale) my food, and when my stomach feels satisfied, I stop. I put the food away so it doesn't go to waste, and feel much better not overeating. It helps prevent belly bloat, too.

Sublimity woman crowned Oregon weight-loss queen – Statesman Journal

Alice Halse of Sublimity has a succinct message for anyone who has endured frustration along the quest to lose weight:

Dont give up! Its worth the effort, no matter how long it takes.

Halse is literally a poster example of her advice. She and Joe Luper of Molalla were recently crowned by TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), as Oregons 2016 Queen and King, a distinction TOPS bestows to men and women who, "at the end of the year, have officially recorded the largest weight loss from their starting weight, regardless of the time taken to reach their goal," according to a group spokesman Dave Amoroso.

Halses quest has been both enduring and rewarding. She originally joined a TOPS chapter in Reedsport decades ago after becoming concerned about weight gain. She transferred to chapters in Stayton years later, but the journey has not always been a smooth one.

My weight loss went quite well during the first year, then, I started gaining some years, and losing during other years, Halse revealed.

Several years ago she became determined and pragmatic about her weight-loss goals. That determination was rewarded.

In 2013, I decided I needed to get more serious about weight loss and gave myself a deadline of the end of 2016. I reached my goal weight on December 24, 2016, she said.

TOPS officials took notice, hailing Halse for success to the tune of 118 pounds lost, spokeswoman Kelly Michalski noted in an email.Thats the sort of success the nonprofit, which emphasizes overall wellness, group support, health education and recognition among its holistic weight-management components, likes to highlight.

We are so gratified by our TOPS members amazing weight-loss accomplishments, said TOPS President Barbara Cady. Commemorating their life-changing achievements is an essential component of TOPS winning formula, whether losing weight or maintaining goals.

In April the Oregon contingent gathered at Mill Casino in North Bend to celebrate member successes, and to crown Halse and Luper.

Meanwhile, the Sublimity woman said it is important to consistently kindle the message and keep wellness at the forefront.

Its just as hard to stay at goal, as it was to get there, Halsesaid. When you achieve (your goals), you learn how to adhere to the lifestyle changes youve made. Exercise of some form is especially vital to keep your body healthy.

I appreciate all of my TOPS friends who have supported me throughout all the years I have been a member.

Weight Loss Tip: STOP Worrying About Calories and Portions! – Huffington post (press release) (blog)

Posted: May 9, 2017 at 11:44 am

What if I told you that the BEST nutritional tip I could give you for you to be successful on your weight loss journey is to completely STOP tracking your calories and portions?

Its a beautiful, cool Spring day here on Long Island, and I write this to you from my parents home. I had a softball game in the same town last night, and figured since I had a 7 AM client around these parts, there was no point in me driving home 45 minutes, showering and whatnot, and getting less than four hours of sleep, just to come right back out here again. So, I stayed over, slept in my old room, got about seven hours of sleep, and feel a lot better than I usually do on Tuesdays when I get half the amount of sleep:-). EFFICIENCY FOR THE WIN!

Now then, back to why youre here

Imagine a world where you NEVER had to worry about your calorie intake again. Imagine eating without minimizing the portions on your plate, or without worrying how much you can consume at any meal.

Wouldnt that be a much more desirable world than the one where youre constantly restricting yourself by a general and arbitrary number based on a physics law that doesnt take the human bodys biological and chemical processes into account?

Im here to tell you that the world I just described actually exists, and in fact, had I not removed the restriction of my calorie intake or my portions from my thinking, I would NOT have overcome my two year plateau. In fact, I firmly believe that my OBSESSION with counting calories is what got me into my plateau in the first place.

When I began my weight loss journey at the ripe old age of 20, I had just come off an academic year where Id gained 70 lbs inside of three months! I dont care who you areThats A LOT of weight to gain in a very short period of time

While I dealt with childhood obesity up until my pre-teens, coupling regular exercise with a teenage metabolism can work wonders. Im starting to think that most teens can drink liquid bleach all day every day, and with a nominal amount of physical activity, they can come out looking like their nutrition was perfectly health and on-point.

So when my teenage metabolism left me right around the time I turned 20, I knew something needed to change. Since I hadnt worried about my weight in nearly 10 years, and I didnt even change my diet whatsoever when I began to overcome my childhood weight issues, I decided to subscribe to popular thinking: Eat less, exercise more!

I got set up on MyFitnessPal, entered my height, weight, desired weight, how many lbs I wanted to lose per week You get the idea! After all this data was input, the app spits out a calorie allotment for the day, and in order to reach my goal of 2 lbs per week, I had to stay within a certain calorie range.

For the first four months, things went pretty well! By merely cutting back on the beer, soda and fast food that comprised the bulk of my daily intake, and by staying within my calorie range, I lost 40 lbs in the first four months, and thought I was well on my way to losing that Sophomore 70

From 40 lbs down through my college graduation and nearly a year into my joining the work force, I stayed exactly the same weight for TWO YEARS: 235 lbs!

I remember continuing to obsess about my calories, thinking things like Maybe I needed to decrease them even further than MyFitnessPal told me, and up my time at the gym

So, Id do thatUsing up most of my calories for the day by lunch, and working out on fumes late in the evening after working a 1012 hour work day.

I remember going to bed hungry VERY often, and that hunger keeping me awake at night as I talked myself out of jumping out of bed, heading downstairs to the kitchen, and eating EVERYTHING in sight!

It was a terrible way to live, and when this lifestyle of restriction and deprivation didnt yield positive results either on the scale or in the mirror, Id saw Screw it! and go back to the foods and drinks that got me to start my weight loss journey in the first place. After a week or two, Id get back on the horse, would see if things would work again, but to no avail!

For two years, this cycle would rinse and repeat

Fortunately, around the time I was really starting to consider giving up on my journey, my buddy turned me on to CrossFit, and one of the dietary strategies CrossFitters subscribe to: Paleo.

Paleo, better known as the Caveman Diet, focuses moreso on food QUALITY, versus quantity. This was music to my ears, since I was sick and tired of depriving my body, always being hungry, constantly having low energy and being irritable all the timeAll for absolutely NOTHING!

I found through my research that our bodies also go into a starvation mode if we deprive our bodies of an adequate amount of nutrients for too long. When were on a calorically restrictive diet, we can only stay deprived for so long. After a while, our bodies will think were in a period of famine, and its processes will completely change!

For starters, EVERYTHING wed eatGood, bad or indifferentwould be stored as fat, since our bodies cant discern when well get an adequate amount of nutrition in next. Second, our hormones will be all out of whack, which makes the likelihood of us dropping more weight much smaller than if we were ingesting an adequate amount of food in the first place.

I also learned through my research that not all calories are created equal. Human beings ingest three different macronutrients: Fats, proteins and carbs. Of the three, only two are ESSENTIAL, meaning our bodies need to ingest these in order to function optimally. These two macronutrients are Fats and Proteins. Carbs are a NON-ESSENTIAL macronutrient, as they can be created in the body through the conversion of our fat stores, or even through the conversion of protein when fat stores are low and we need a more immediate boost.

Moreover, while the whole Calories Matter! thing is based on the Law of Thermodynamics, and while we are, indeed, physical beings, theres also quite a bit of biology and chemistry that occurs within our bodies. Each macronutrient elicits a different insulin response, which means ingesting 500 calories of fat versus 500 calories of carbohydrate NOT equate to the same result.

Of the three macronutrients, Fat is considered the most neutral, in that it elicits BY FAR the smallest insulin response. This is why high-fat diets tend to work well for both weight loss and overall health, as were not triggering the Insulin Resistance Cycle like we would when ingesting a comparable amount of carbohydrates. This cycle is a terrible process that leads to short-term fat accumulation, and long-term risk for Type-2 Diabetes and a myriad of deadly but preventable health conditions.

Also, while protein elicits a lower insulin response than carbs, when ingesting more than 30% of your daily intake from protein, you WILL stimulate a considerable insulin response, which obviously isnt ideal for weight loss or optimal health. This doesnt even explore the notion that eating too much protein can put excess stress on your kidneys, which can bring on its whole separate set of issues

My life changed when I switched my focus from food QUANTITY to food QUALITY. Nutrition is simple, guys: Eat meats, vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no (added) sugar. Eat ONLY when hungry, and just to satisfyNOT to stuff your face.

Two sentences. Thats it! If you can employ these two sentences to EVERY nutritional situation, be it when preparing a home-cooked meal or when eating out at a restaurant, youll be well on your way to reaching your health and weight loss goals!:-)

‘Balloon-in-a-Pill’ Spurs Weight Loss, Health Benefits: Study | Health … – Helena Independent Record

Posted: May 9, 2017 at 11:44 am

MONDAY, May 8, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- A new type of "balloon-in-a-pill" may offer a nonsurgical way for obese people to shed pounds -- and get healthier, too, a small study hints.

The study, of just 10 patients, tested the latest rendition of the so-called gastric balloon.

Some weight-loss experts consider gastric balloons an alternative to invasive obesity surgery. The approach is straightforward: One or more balloons are placed in the stomach, then inflated -- allowing them to take up space and curb the patient's appetite.

There are already a few weight-loss balloons on the market in the United States. Two, called ReShape and Orbera, are ingested with the help of an endoscope placed in the mouth and threaded down into the stomach.

Another, called Obalon, is swallowed via a capsule. The capsule, which is tethered to a thin catheter, dissolves once it reaches the stomach, revealing the balloon. The balloon is then inflated with air through the catheter.

All three balloon devices must be removed through an endoscope after six months.

The device tested in the new study is different in a few ways, said researcher Dr. Hidetoshi Ohta, of Otaru Ekisaikai Hospital in Japan.

Like Obalon, it is taken by pill. But, Ohta explained, there is no need for an endoscope. The balloon is deflated, then excreted the natural way six months after it's swallowed.

The new device also has a "magnetic valve," Ohta said. The valve can be opened at any time to deflate the balloon -- in an emergency, for instance.

The study -- which had no industry funding, Ohta said -- involved 10 adults who were overweight or obese.

All were treated with the gastric balloon, along with diet and exercise changes -- key components of all the approved balloon systems.

After six months, the patients had lost almost 13 percent of their body weight, on average. Beyond that, Ohta said, their insulin levels dipped by 20 percent, and their levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol dropped by an average of 20 mg/dL of blood.

Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Obese people commonly become resistant to insulin's effects, which is a precursor to type 2 diabetes.

Ohta said the findings suggest the balloon therapy can not only spur weight loss, but might also help control type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

But a weight-loss surgeon who was not involved in the study was skeptical.

Dr. Mitchell Roslin is chief of obesity surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

It's no surprise that patients in this study saw improvements in insulin and LDL levels, Roslin said. "Any modality" that triggers weight loss will have those benefits, he said.

Roslin is unconvinced that gastric balloons offer a long-term solution to obesity.

"The issue with balloons is that the devices need to be removed," he said. "And it's unlikely there will be a lasting impact when the device is extracted or, in this case, deflated."

He cited "liquid diets" as an analogy. They work, but only for a while. And people often gain back all of the weight they lost, and then some, Roslin said.

"I challenge anyone to explain to me why a balloon will be different," he added.

And leaving the device in place might raise the risk of complications, Roslin said.

As for safety questions, the balloons already on the market have some potential side effects. They include nausea, vomiting and stomach ulcers, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Also, earlier this year, the FDA warned doctors of two potential problems with the ReShape and Orbera balloons -- which are filled with fluid, rather than air.

The devices, the agency said, can spontaneously overinflate, sometimes causing abdominal pain, breathing problems and vomiting. Some patients have also developed pancreatitis -- inflammation of the pancreas -- because of compression from the balloons.

If either problem arises, patients may need the device removed, the FDA said.

Ohta acknowledged that his study was very small and short-term. He said larger, longer-term trials are planned.

Ohta presented his initial findings with the device on Monday at the annual Digestive Disease Week meeting of gastroenterologists, in Chicago. The results should be considered preliminary until they're published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

The U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has more on managing obesity.

‘Heaviest woman’ reportedly has cardiac issues after weight-loss procedure – Fox News

Posted: May 9, 2017 at 11:43 am

Doctors treating an Egyptian woman believed to be have been the worlds heaviest before undergoing weight loss surgery said she is suffering from cardiac issues and bed sore infections. Eman Abd El Aty, who left an Indian hospital on Thursday for further treatment at a center in Abu Dhabi, was airlifted from her home with the help of a crane for the March procedure.

Abd El Aty, 36, has not walked in 25 years and at her heaviest, reportedly weighed about 1,100 pounds. She reportedly had lost more than 660 after undergoing the bariatric procedure, but doctors had warned about future complications due to her weak bones.

EGYPTIAN WOMAN LEAVES INDIAN HOSPITAL MORE THAN 650 POUNDS LIGHTER

A team of more than 20 doctors is now treating Ab El Aty at Burjeel Hospital.

She is currently facing several health conditions, including a cardiac issue, which is still under intensive investigation; severe urosepsis [a bacterial infection complicating a urinary tract infection]; and third degree infected bed sores, a statement from the hospital said, according to BBC News.

The statement said doctors are focused on improving her condition and hope to have her sitting up with minimal to no assistance.

GAINING WEIGHT IN MIDDLE AGE? IT'S THIS MOLECULE'S FAULT, SCIENTISTS SAY

Her former doctor at Saifee Hospital, Muffazal Lakdawala, predicted that Ab El Aty is facing multiple surgeries to straighten her hips and knees, but had clashed with the womans family members during her hospitalization. A report by Mid-Day noted the hospital called authorities on Abd El Atys sister, Salem, who had accused the hospital of exaggerating her weight loss. Salim also claimed Abd El Aty was suffering seizures and was not stable enough to be moved.

Abd El Aty was placed on a special liquid diet to reduce her weight ahead of the bariatric procedure so that doctors could safely operate, BBC News reported.

Advice to iron out those fat dimples from cellulite – The Philadelphia Tribune

Posted: May 9, 2017 at 11:43 am

The word cellulite was coined decades ago in an European beauty-spa to describe fat that has pushed itself between the walls of your connective tissue.

Many people think toxins cause cellulite. Toxins have nothing to do with cellulite. You can develop cellulite whether youre heavy or thin. Nothing you put on the out side of your body will reduce the fat on the inside. The only way to reduce cellulite is to reduce your fat intake and do some exercise.

What is commonly called cellulite is just a dimpling appearance of fat on your thighs and buttocks. Everyone can develop cellulite. Cellulite is most common in women. Its possible for a woman of normal weight to have more cellulite than an overweight woman.

The area where cellulite develops is made up of a network of fibrous bands on top of fat. The fat pushes through this network of bands and creates a waffled or dimpled appearance. The more fat you have, the more cellulite shows. As you age the supportive structure that makes fat appear smooth begins to breakdown. It now takes less fat for the cellulite to show.

Poor diet, fad dieting, slow metabolism, lack of physical activity, hormone changes, dehydration, high total body fat, thickness and color of your skin are other conditions that lead to the development of cellulite. Even genetics can play a role in your development of cellulite.

In the last few years over $30 billion each year was spent to get rid of fat. The least effective method was the cellulite creams, which claim to work by helping your body metabolize fat.

Cellulite develops deep under your skin and metabolism takes place inside the body, not outside. Dieting is the most popular way to lose weight. Dieting will never burn fat or calories. Most of the people who lost weight while dieting gained back all the weight they lost. Some dieters gained back the original weight and from 10 to 15 pounds more.

When you plan to get rid of cellulite you should look at your complete lifestyle.

The Right Nutrition

You should never take in less than 12 calories per pound of body weight. That means a 100-pound person should take in no less than 1,200 calories daily. This type of eating plan will help keep your metabolism constant.

Your metabolic rate determines how fast your body burns calories. To help get rid of your cellulite, you should drink plenty of water and cut high sodium foods from your diet. Eating plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains throughout the day will help to replace fat calories. Eating small meals throughout the day will keep you from overeating. We should eat foods loaded with vitamins, minerals and fiber but low in fat and calories.

These nutrients rich foods include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, peas and low fat dairy products.

Its recommended that we have at least four servings each of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and two servings of protein. Low fat dairy products are also important. You need at least two serving daily.

Get Physical

Exercise also speeds up your metabolic rate. Ideally you should do an aerobic workout to burn fat and some strengthening resistance exercises to develop and tone muscle tissue to effectively burn fat. If you diet without exercising, your body will feed on muscle to get what it needs.

A good beginner workout should consist of a light aerobic workout like brisk walking, stretching and basic calisthenics like push-ups for the chest, back and triceps and crunch ups for the abdominal area.

If you have never worked out or youre out of shape, you should see your doctor to get his approval to start a program. You should always work your way into a program gradually. If youre coming back from a long lay off (more than six weeks) due to an injury, you need to be very careful and follow your doctors orders.

Aerobic exercise can help keep weight off, which can reduce the appearance of cellulite. To really smooth out your skin, youve got to lift weights. A study done at the South Shore YMCA in Quincy, Mass., found that adults who did three 30-minute aerobic workouts each week for eight weeks lost 4 pounds, but gained no muscle and only slightly improved body fat composition. Those that combined 15 minutes of aerobic activity with 15 minutes of strength training three times a week lost 10 pounds of fat, added 2 pounds of muscle, and saw a greater overall improvement in body fat composition. The later group looked better and lost a lot of the dimples.

Aerobics Workout

An aerobics workout is any workout that keeps you moving continuously for 30 minutes. It takes the body 30 minutes to switch to the fat burning stage during a workout. The average person can comfortably start with 10 to 15 minutes of aerobic exercise. Gradually build your aerobic exercise time to 30 to 45 minutes at least 3 times a week. Aerobic exercise is the only effective way to burn fat.

Some examples of aerobic workouts include 30 minutes or more of brisk walking, jogging, bicycling, skating, swimming, walking in a pool, aerobic, dancing, racquetball and jumping rope.

Workouts which include a lot of stop-and-go movements will burn calories but are not considered aerobic. These include karate, volleyball, weight training, sprinting, tennis, ballet and gymnastics.

Resistance Exercise

Not doing muscle-building exercises will make you look worse than when you started your diet. Muscle gives the body its shape. Doing toning exercises with weights or active exercise machines for the whole body two to three times a week will help to smooth out the dimpled effect caused by cellulite. Lack of muscle tone will make cellulite more obvious. When you build muscle it will also help burn fat.

A beginner should start by doing 15 minutes of calisthenics. This should include two to three exercises for each body part. Push-ups, sit-ups, knee bends and calf raises are excellent basic exercises.

After getting in some conditioning, starting using some weights. Join a gym. Get a trainer. Make your workout harder.

Dieting and Smoking

The only sure way to lose weight safely is to exercise and diet at the same time. By dieting and exercising sensibly you can lose 1 to 1.5 pounds of body fat a week. Any greater loss will be water, muscle and bone. So get rid of that cellulite safely. Eat right and exercise.

Stop smoking. Cigarette smoke reduces blood vessel flow, weaken connective tissue and disrupt the formation of collagen. Smoking helps to cause the connective tissue to become stretched and damaged more easily. This allows underlying fat to show through your connective tissue. Smoking can also causes premature wrinkles and aging, leave skin dry and discolored and can contribute to stretch marks.

Before starting your fitness program, consult your physician.

Grant: ‘Bikini body’ isn’t only reason to exercise – Columbus Telegram

One common reason to exercise in the spring of each year is to get ready for swimsuit season. This article talks about exercising and swimsuit season.

I read an article recently that talked about swimsuit season and defined a bikini-ready body as simply a body that could physically put a bikini on that body, regardless of size and shape. There is a lot of pressure to be perfect by the standards that women set for themselves. This article also showed many pictures of women in bikinis, and some of them were pregnant, had stretch marks from previous pregnancies or showed women of average to above-average weight.

So, is it worth the trouble to exercise if you dont end up with the perfect bikini body?

Research has confirmed that any amount of exercise, at any age, is beneficial. And, in general, the more you do, the greater the benefits. The National Academy of Sciences has recommended that everyone strive for a total of an hour per day of physical activity. Sounds like a lot, but the hour can be made up of several shorter bursts of activity (it can be walking, gardening, even heavy housecleaning) done throughout the day.

Walking, lifting weights, doing chores its all good. Regardless of what you do, regular exercise and physical activity is the path to health and well-being. Exercise burns fat, builds muscle, lowers cholesterol, eases stress and anxiety and lets us sleep restfully.

Another important part of health and that perfect body is eating for health. To lose weight, most people need to reduce the number of calories they get from food and beverages (energy in) and increase their physical activity (energy out).

For a weight loss of 1 to 1 1/2 pounds per week, daily intake should be reduced by 500 to 750 calories. In general:

Eating plans that contain 1,200 to 1,500 calories each day will help most women lose weight safely.

Eating plans that contain 1,500 to 1,800 calories each day are suitable for men and for women who weigh more or exercise regularly.

Very low calorie diets of fewer than 800 calories per day should not be used unless you are being monitored by your doctor.

So, I am still wondering if I do all the appropriate exercise and diet plans, will I have that perfect bikini body? That is where genetics and general body build come into play and results will always vary. However, in general your health will always be better with exercise and a healthy diet regardless of the size of your swimsuit or other clothing.

Have a happy and healthy summer.
