Four months into the new year, are you still on track to hit the goals you set at the start of 2022? If your New Year's Resolution was to focus on nutrition a dietitian said to focus not just on what you're eating, but when.
"Let's think about limiting our hours in which we're eating. Let's think about eating more fiber, more plants, less hyper-palatable foods, less processed foods," Kristin Kirkpatrick, a Registered Dietitian with Cleveland Clinic, said.
She said to stay away from fad diets because there's no way to stick to them for the long haul. Instead, she recommends intermittent fasting. You only eat during a certain time frame, like between 10 AM and 6 PM, for example.
She also recommends two diet plans:
Kirkpatrick also said you can cut back on calories by simply listening to your body.
"Am I hungry right now, or am I looking to feed emotion? Am I just dehydrated? So really taking the time from a mindfulness perspective of 'Am I feeling true hunger?' I'm going to eat until I no longer feel that hunger, which means eating slow, chewing more, taking out distractions, and being able to stop before I feel that feeling of fullness," she said.
Kirkpatrick said don't focus on a timeline for weight loss. Focus on celebrating the milestones along the way. She also said you don't have to cut out all junk food. Instead, make sure to eat healthy 90 percent of the time.

Multidisciplinary Approach to Weight Management Including Bariatric Surgery Is a Viable Option for Adolescents with Obesity – Newswise
Posted: April 11, 2022 at 1:57 am
Newswise Increased access to an adolescent-centered healthy weight management program, including bariatric or weight loss surgery, is paramount to achieving the best long-term outcomes as adolescents with obesity grow to adulthood, a new study confirms.
Published online in Surgical Endoscopy, a journal of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the study found that adolescents with obesity who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the stomach and lower insulin resistance, benefited from less obesity and concomitant organ damage no matter their age at the time of surgery. This applied to children as young as 13 years of age.
Led by pediatric surgeons at Hassenfeld Childrens Hospital at NYU Langone and Childrens National Hospital in Washington, DC, the study also revealed that adolescents with a parent who underwent bariatric surgery themselves, had a higher weight prior to weight loss surgery, suggesting the familial nature of chronic obesity.
Childhood obesity occurs when a child is well above the healthy weight for their age and height. It is a complex and serious public health concern that continues to grow in prevalence. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pediatric obesity affects 14.4 million infants, children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 years, and the rate of obesity nearly doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to a pre-pandemic period. This faster increase was most pronounced in younger, school-aged children.
If obesity has negative effects on overall health, then why not take care of it early? says study lead author Jun Tashiro, MD, MPH, a pediatric surgeon specializing in bariatric surgery at the Adolescent Healthy Weight Program, part of Hassenfeld Childrens Hospital at NYU Langone, and an assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Surgery, in the Department of Surgery at NYU Langone Health. Addressing the toxic exposure with early interventions in any instance as long as it is safe will lower the negative consequences, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, musculoskeletal problems, breathing problems, anxiety and depression.
For teens ages 13+ who have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher and have been unsuccessful through traditional weight-loss measures or who suffer from obesity-related health conditions, bariatric surgery is a safe, effective treatment toward developing a healthier and more active life.
There have been an increasing number of studies specifically designed to address the safety and effectiveness of bariatric surgery in this younger population, coupled with recent reports highlighting the many health-related medical problems teens with severe obesity face, a national consensus in support of this treatment regimen for younger populations has emerged. However, most facilities nationwide are limited in their ability to treat adolescents younger than 16 years of age. For this reason, younger patients may not have the same access to bariatric surgery as older individuals.
What the Study Found
The new study evaluated the effects of parental history of bariatric surgery, as well as age at the time of operation, on 328 adolescents who underwent LSG at Childrens National Hospital in Washington, DC, between January 2010 and December 2019. Among the 31 percent of adolescents younger than 16 years, no differences in weight loss trends were demonstrated in comparison to the 69 percent 16 years or older. The study also demonstrated that the 76 patients with parental history of surgery had a higher absolute weight at the time of presentation, suggesting the adherence to the familial, polygenic nature of obesity.
Although there were no differences in weight loss outcomes for those patients whose parents have or have not had bariatric surgery themselves, given their heavier size at age of surgery, there may be benefit in ensuring even earlier access to care for these children and adolescents, says Tashiro.
Multidisciplinary adolescent weight loss programs focus on the entire child and family, addressing the psychological, social, nutritional, hormonal, genetic, activity, neurological and sleep issues that may contribute to excess weight gain. The study authors emphasize that freestanding childrens hospitals or those within a larger adult facility are in a unique position to offer bariatric surgery to younger patients, particularly those younger than 16 years of age.
This study shows that bariatric surgery is just as effective for younger adolescents as for older kids, says study senior author Evan Nadler, MD, director of the Child and Adolescent Weight Loss Surgery Program at Childrens National Hospital. Adolescents and teens with severe obesity face many significant barriers to accessing metabolic bariatric surgery, and while they wait, obesity-related comorbidities may continue to develop and impact their health. We as doctors should work together to remove these barriers when appropriate, so more young people who need this safe and effective treatment can get it.
Further research about how long-term comorbidities develop in adolescents with obesity is warranted for further understanding of the benefits of early bariatric surgery intervention.

Weight a Minute: These Huskies Already Look in Much Better Shape – Sports Illustrated
Posted: April 11, 2022 at 1:57 am
Current University of Washington football coaches, out of respect, say they're not going to badmouth the previous ones.
Besides, they're far too busy still getting acquainted with their players and installing a totally new offense that will stress spreading the field and tweaking a defense that will bring more pressure.
Yet one thing is fairly obvious after looking every player up and down as they run through a month of spring practices last year's Huskies weren't in the best football shape.
They might have thought they were, but they weren't. They left a lot in the weight room and on the running track.
This argument first was madeafter retracing the 2021 schedule and noting that a greatly underachieving 4-8 UW team tailed off badly and lost five games in the fourth quarter.
It also was going to bea badge of honor that the Huskies would field theheaviest offensive line in school history, but it proved to be a detriment as those guys struggled all season to get off the snap and block anyone.
New weight and conditioning coach Ron McKeefery attacked this problem with everyone right away with creative winter workouts that players uniformly described as difficult and overly taxing.
"Definitely I want to shout out coach Mac's workout program, it's huge, definitely one of the best I've ever been a part of,"tight end Devi Culp said, down 6 pounds to 244. "There's no jokes from the gimmicks. They're definitely going to throw a lot at you, make your body adjust and it's going to be really hard."
Forty-two players have lost weight in moving from one Husky coaching staff to the next.
Even if they haven't shed many or any pounds, UW players appear noticeably more buff, sleeker, when just walking around.
The biggest body transformation was made by redshirt freshman defensive tackle Siaois Finau, who has dropped 49 pounds after hitting a high-water mark of 315.

Ulumoo Ale topped out at 368 pounds a year ago, making him the second heaviest football player in the Pac-12 last season, but the current staff has him down to 344 and headed to 330 by next August after moving him from the offensive line to defense.
Edge rusher Zion Tupuola-Fetui currently weighs 241, down from a high of 278 two seasons ago, with some of that weight loss attributed to his rehabilitation from an Achilles injury suffered a year ago. He'll actually try to put on more pounds, seeking a happy medium.
"I like 240 though it's probably not the best number to have as a linebacker," he said, suggesting that 255 or 260 still might a better target weight. He'll use the spring drills to figure out what's best.
Tight end Caden Jumper and edge rusher Jordan Lolohea each have shed 16 pounds, lowering their weight to 249.
Wide receiver Jabez Tinae is down 20 pounds from 205.
Walk-on offensive lineman Gage Harty is practicing at 244, down 26 pounds.
Others with double-digit weight loss are cornerback Zakhari Spears, 11 pounds to 184; offensive guard Owen Prentice, 11 pounds to 299; cornerback Elijah Jackson, 11 pounds to 184; and offensive tackle Julius Buelow, 11 pounds to 319.
With so many slender frames and spring practices that burn a lot of calories, the new Husky staff has made sure to have a table full of smoothies, energy drinks, fruit and snacks readily available to the Huskies has they walk off the field.

Visceral Fat Mistakes You’re Making Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That
Posted: April 11, 2022 at 1:57 am
Most people who have visceral fat don't realize they have it because it's a hidden health issue not talked about enough. Visceral fat is located deep in your belly and it's wrapped around your vital organs. It can cause severe health issues like stroke, some cancers, type 2 diabetes and more. Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson, aka "The VibrantDoc," a recognized leader in functional medicine and author of the new self-care book Vibrant: A Groundbreaking Program to Get Energized, Reverse Aging, and Glow tells Eat This, Not That! Health, "Everyone has some visceral fat, and this is normal and necessary. However, many people have excess visceral fat today, likely due to the easy availability of high-sugar foods, the epidemic of chronic stress, the ubiquity of sedentary lifestyles, and the constant temptation to overeat, all of which are part of modern life." Losing visceral fat is very possible with the proper diet and working out, but here's five ways not to reduce visceral fat, according to experts we spoke with. Read onand to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had COVID.
Dr. Steve Hruby, a Doctor of Chiropractic and founder at Kaizen Progressive Wellness says, "People often make the mistake of only focusing on weight loss, when in reality, they should be concentrating on reducing body fat percentage. Reducing body fat percentage is the only way to target visceral fat specifically. Focusing on weight loss alone can actually cause you to lose muscle mass, which can actually make your body composition worse and lead to an increase in visceral fat."6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
"Another common mistake is not eating enough," Dr. Hruby reminds us. "When you're trying to lose weight, your body needs fewer calories than it would when you're maintaining your weight. However, you don't want to go too low with your calorie intake, as this can actually cause your body to go into starvation mode and hold on to the fat stores it has. A good rule of thumb is to reduce your calorie intake by about 200 calories per day and take it to 500 with days or one or two weeks passing."

Kristin Carlino, a Registered Dietitian with Jersey City Medical Center explains, "The biggest mistake most people make is thinking they can target specific areas when trying to lose weight and reduce fat. Some people carry their weight very differently (i.e., their stomach vs. their hips). You will lose the fat in the part of your body where you store the most of it. Also, fat above the muscle is easier to lose than visceral fat. Visceral fat is stored inside the belly, wrapped around the organs, and it's much harder to lose. An overall calorie reduction will help people lose both visceral and subcutaneous fat. Different strategies can help make calorie reduction easier. No matter what an individual's diet preference is (keto vs. high protein, low carb, for example), it all comes down to calorie deficit to achieve weight loss and reduce fat."

Aaron Guyett, CSCS Director of Education with Living Fit states, "One mistake people often make when trying to lose visceral fat, is they try to do too much too soon. The hare never wins in Aesop's fable, and it is no different here. There are no quick fixes to losing visceral fat. Consistency in nutrition and exercise will always prevail, it just might take longer than you want."
RELATED: I'm a Virus Expert and if You Have This Symptom, Get Help
Working out is key in reducing visceral fat, but according to Guyett, "Another mistake people make when trying to lose visceral fat is wrapping the torso to sweat out the fat. This may increase the perspiration of the area where the visceral fat is, but it will never reduce the amount of visceral fat in and around the gut. This is done through a steady approach to nutrition and exercise. Perspiration is only going to help you lose water weight, which will be added back to your weight as soon as you have your next drink."

Researchers discover compound preventing muscle loss and weight gain in seniors – WWLTV.com
Posted: April 11, 2022 at 1:57 am
Muscle loss takes away independence and causes health problems as we age, evident especially now as we are living longer.
NEW ORLEANS Researchers in Louisiana have made a discovery that could one day treat two problems common to aging, losing muscle while gaining fat.
The ground-breaking research is just out today in a medical journal, and the lead scientist explains how it works.
As we age, we lose muscle mass. And that natural decline begins early on, around the late 30s.
So it's very much a use it or lose it muscle, soone of the natural instincts we fightmore often or not,is just the desire to do less, saidChris Axelrod, Director of Integrative Physiology and MolecularMedicine at LSU Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
Muscle loss takes away independence and causes health problems as we age, evident especially now as we are living longer.
That muscle mass is going to be one of the largest predictors of the quality of your life, and maybe the length of your life, he said.
And obesity in older age accelerates muscle loss. You can slow the natural process of losing muscle with exercise, and quality protein in your diet, but now researchers at LSU Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, have discovered chemical a compound that helped elderly obese mice, lose weight, add muscle and strength, reduce inflammation, and increase physical activity.
Instead of affecting how much food you're eating, you're affecting how much food you're breaking down to use to make energy. It dramatically, and I mean dramatically decreases body weight, Axelrod explained.
That excess fuel, or calories, normally would be stored as fat.
The study is published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle. It's the first evidence that the compound BAM15, works inside the cell's energy production center to prevent muscle loss and fat increase as we age. This is different from dieting, by reducing calories, which causes weight loss of fat and muscle.
We know that it treats obesity. We know that it can promote healthy aging. It can treat certain forms of cancer.
But years of research is needed still and is now ongoing, to see if it works in people, and to design the compound and dose that is safe.
Scientists warn that at this stage, the synthetic compound being sold on the internet is for research purposes only.

Matthewappeared to have lost some weight and gained a companion in the new images.
The Friends alum wore a flannel shirt under a light blue tee as his greying hair was held in place by a pair of sunglasses - he also sported a goatee.
Matthew held a McDonalds cup after appearing to grab lunch with his new friend - whose identity is currently unknown - in Pacific Palisades, California.
They parked a vehicle and entered the home, with his counterpart wearing jeans shorts with sunglasses while holding a bunch of McDonald's items as they entered the wooden gate.
Matthew has rarely appeared in public lately, but appeared distressed and disheveled as he was seen last October smoking a cigarette after splitting from his fiance Molly.
However, more recently he teased his upcoming book release on Instagram, sharinga photoof the cover along with the release date: "11. 1. 22."
The book is titled "Friends, Lovers And The Big Terrible Thing" and he looked happy and healthy on the cover.
He reportedly scored millions for the memoir, which sold in a deal in the mid-seven figure range, according to an earlier story fromDeadline.

According to the outlet, the actor will take readers behind-the-scenes and onto the soundstage of the sitcom while opening up about his private struggles with addiction.
In the caption of his post, he also promised to tell-all in the memoir, writing: "So much has been written about me in the past. I thought it was time people heard from me."
Referencing his drug addiction struggles, the actor wrote: "The highs were high, the lows were low. But I have lived to tell the tale, even though at times it looked like I wouldnt. And its all in here."
He then joked, "I apologize its not a pop-up book."
Fans flooded the comments with positivity, gushing about the cover and how "excited" they were.
One wrote: "This is amazing I can't wait to hear from the man who is such a talented actor! Playing chandler was genius, but that is only one of your many fantastic roles."
The actor famously starred as Chandler Bing on the long-running sitcom, alongside Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox, from 1994 to 2004 - as well as other projects like the film Fools Rush In.

However, fans noticed that the Canadian actor was not responding to questions with his normal sharp wit andappeared quiet and distracted.
Despite the speculation, The Sun exclusively revealed that Matthew'sslurred speech was due to emergency dental workand not a drugs relapse.
Matthew's battled addiction over the years but recently was said to be "sober and doing better."
Theactorsplit from his fiance Molly a month later in June 2021.
He began dating the literary manager, 29, in 2018 and they had gottenengagedin November 2020.
Matthewconfirmed the breakup news toPeople, sharing in a statement: "Sometimes things just don't work out and this is one of them. I wish Molly the best."
However, it was later reported thatMolly put their wedding on holdafter he "flirted with other women" while they were on a break.
A source told OK!: "It's got to be upsetting for her to know he was pursuing other girls the moment they split up.
"Mattdoesn't see how he should be punished he didn't cheat.
"But Molly wants to take a breather and see where they're at in a couple of months. She must be asking herself what kind of guy she's really be marrying."

12 Best Meal Replacement Bars For Weight Loss Of 2022 – Women’s Health
Posted: April 11, 2022 at 1:57 am
Sometimes chaotic schedules can leave you with no time to actually sit down and eat. A meal replacement bar can really come in handy at these times, but youll want to pick one really carefully, especially if youre trying to lose weightsome may have more calories than you want. The best meal replacement bars should have balanced nutrients and minimal added sugars.
A meal replacement bar is a protein bar with a little more nutrition meant to be able to take the place of a meal, says Audra Wilson, RD, a bariatric dietitian at the Northwestern Medicine Metabolic Health and Surgical Weight Loss Center at Delnor Hospital. And one typically comes with 200 to 400 calories.
Given the name, you may think you can just grab one and call it a meal. But TBH, theyre not meant to be consumed as a meal on its own. The vast majority of bars on the market do not contain enough calories to replace an entire meal, so they will need to be paired with other foodsfor instance, yogurt and a piece of fruit, says Amy Gorin, RDN, an inclusive plant-based dietitian and the owner of Master the Media in Stamford, Connecticut.
Having the occasional bar on the go can stop you from turning down the drive-through lane for heavy or unhealthy choices when you're hungry, says Gorin, emphasizing that you definitely cannot subsist on these bars alone. If you plan on replacing a meal with one, make sure to also consume other foods along with it to amp up the calorie count.
May Zhu, RD, the founder of Nutrition Happens, agrees and points out that eating real food is still the best way to get all your nutrients. While meal replacement bars offer an equivalent number of calories, they do not provide the vitamins and minerals youd get from veggies, meat, and grains. But if bars are easier for you to sustain a calorie intake that aligns with your weight loss goals, swapping it out for one meal a day could potentially help achieve that goal as long as your other meals are also in line with those goals, she says.
You should use these bars sparingly, thougha few times a week at most. Relying too much on meal replacement bars might mean that you are missing out on several essential vitamins and minerals that are found in fruits and vegetables, says Zhu. Her advice is to check the label and see which macros are missing, then supplement with an item that can fill that gap. For example, if your bar is lower in fiber, try pairing it with an extra piece of fiber-rich fruit. Zhu adds that it's fine to sub a meal with a bar once in a while if you are eating a balanced diet at other times.
Some meal replacement bars have a lot of fat and sugar, so save them for when you absolutely need one. Wilson says she recommend these bars only when you're debating between skipping a meal and eating something.
Many bars will be within a similar calorie range, but analyzing the nutrition facts allows you to see where the calories are coming from, says Wilson. Protein should be between 10 to 15 grams for a filling effect. Saturated fat should not exceed 20 percent in the percent daily value column, and fat should stay around 10 grams or less. If the bar has whole ingredients, it should contain at least three grams of fiber. The bar may be high in carbs or sugar, but this should come from whole fruits like dates, not added sugars like honey or sucrose. So look for hidden sugar by checking for phrases like "dried cane juice," "honey," or "raw sugar," as all of these are considered sugar.
Finally, search for whole foods in the ingredient list. The more the better, Wilson says. Some bars will have added nutrients, so if you see ingredients like citric acid, know that these may be a nutritional add-on.
Even knowing what the ideal criteria are, picking a meal replacement bar can still be tricky, especially if you have certain dietary restrictions or preferences. Here are the best meal replacement bars for every need, according to RDs.
Best For Nutrition
SANS meal bars are the next best thing to a plate of nutritious foods when you're too busy for one. They are made from 100 percent whole foods like egg whites, flax seeds, peanuts, and spinach, providing at least 10 percent of the daily value of 15 essential vitamins and minerals, according to Zhu.
Even though you'll find sugar in the bars, know that it's derived from natural sources like dates. Overall, these bars have a well-rounded profile of protein, fiber, and healthy fats, and will make for a delicious, satisfying alternative.
Per serving: 380 calories, 24 g fat, 36 g carbs, 22 g sugar, 9 g fiber, 14 g protein
Best Gluten-Free Bars
These are Gorin's go-to when she's on the go. The LemonZest is my current favorite flavor, with eight grams of satisfying plant protein and three grams of filling fiber for 190 calories. Plus, it is made with gluten-free ingredients, she says. Throw one in your purse, so you won't be caught unprepared without an appropriate substitute if you're sensitive to gluten.
Per serving: 190 calories, 6 g fat, 28 g carbs, 9 g sugar, 3 g fiber, 8 g protein
Best Grain-Free Bars
Made from a base of peanut butter, eggs, and rice protein, Perfect Bars are packed with almost 20 grams of protein per bar. There is also a blend of whole vegetable powders in the mix, including carrot, celery, dried kale, and spinach.
These bars provide 50 percent daily value of vitamin B3, which helps the body convert food to energy, explains Zhu.
Per serving: 340 calories, 19 g fat, 27 g carbs, 19 g sugar, 3 g fiber, 17 g protein
Best For Energy
GoMacro MacroBars contain a blend of sprouted brown rice and pea protein that in combination, helps you get a more well-rounded source of complete protein, says Zhu. The puffed brown rice in these bars is a fiber-rich carbohydrate that'll keep you full and power you through the day.
Per serving: 270 calories, 9 g fat, 35 g carbs, 13 g sugar, 3 g fiber, 12 g protein
Best For Keto Dieters
Sugar and carbs are a big no-no when you're trying to achieve ketosis through the keto diet, which makes finding a meal replacement bar that fits into your carb limit more difficult.
