Why the World Couldn’t Get Enough of Mama June’s Weight Loss Transformation – E! Online

Posted: April 8, 2017 at 11:41 pm

It's hard to believe that over the course of less than two months, the world has seen Mama June undergo such a dramatic transformation.

The reality star has documented her weight loss journey to slip into a size four dress on her hit WE TV show, Mama June: From Not to Hot, and it's been nothing short of a wild ride.

In seven episodes, June Shannon (mother to the unforgettable and endlessly entertaining Honey Boo Boo) has gone from 460 pounds to 160 pounds after weight loss and cosmetic surgeries.

So how come the world was so captivated by Mama June's adventure? Here are 5 reasons why fans couldn't get enough of the candid 37-year-old:

We're Invested: It's been five years since we all first met Alana Thompson chug go-go juice before getting on stage to shake what her mama gave her on Toddlers and Tiaras. In that solid chunk of time, the family has gone through countless changes and we've been keeping up with every step of the way. To see the latest step in the Thompson family saga unfold before our very eyes is just par for the course for viewers around the world who aren't ashamed to indulge in one of their favorite guilty pleasures.

You Can Take the Girl Outta Georgia: June may have traveled to California during the course of her series, but that didn't change her one bit. In fact, her entire weight loss transformation didn't change the core of who she really is. June is still all about her Southern roots through thick and thin, pun intended.

It's Mama's Way or the Highway: She may have had all the doctors, the personal trainers, the motivators, the chefs, the support system, but ultimately, the real work had to come from within. Mama June struggled a bit at times to come to terms with her new reality and healthy lifestyle, but once she set her mind to it, she found success. It just goes to show that in the end, Mama June had to tune out the haters (including her own inner critic) and handle things her own way.

She's the Ultimate Revenge Body: First there was you-know-who, then there was Mama June. The entire premise of Not to Hot was based around the fact that June was going to make a splashy entrance to her Sugar Bear's wedding. The red dress was picked specifically to turn heads and leave her ex reeling with regret. In the end, who doesn't love a good revenge story, right?

Everyone Loves a Happy Ending: Despite the dysfunction and countless cringe-worthy moments, fans still want to see everything turn out A-OK for Mama June. After the show, it seems like she's got her family and her health in order, and her love life is next up on the list. Do we smell another spin-off about Honey Boo Boo's mom finding herself a man? Only time will tell

UEA scientists sniff out a solution for loss of smell – Norfolk Eastern Daily Press

A new study by Norfolk scientists may have uncovered a way of combating the condition with a substance usually used to treat bladder issues.

A study by the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the Smell and Taste clinic at Gorlestons James Paget University Hospital has shown a sodium citrate nasal spray could help patients suffering from anosmia - the total loss of smell - or hyposmia - partial loss of smell. Sodium citrate, the sodium salt of citric acid, is safe to use and already licensed for medicinal uses in the stomach and bladder.

Carl Philpott from the UEA said: The sodium citrate nasal spray was designed to mop up calcium molecules in nasal mucus and as a result, temporarily turn up the sense of smell.

An inability to smell can affect everything from eating food to countryside walks to personal relationships.

Mr Philpott said: In the randomised trial, patients were treated either with sodium citrate spray or sterile water. They were then invited to take part in a series of tests, smelling increasingly stronger concentrations of four different odours roses, pear, vinegar and menthol, noting at what concentration they could detect the smell.

Sodium citrate is known to bind calcium. Calcium molecules are key in cell function, and are believed to be involved in turning down the sense of smell.

Researchers wanted to investigate if reducing calcium in the mucus in the nose would suppress its ability to inhibit a persons sense of smell.

Promising results

Mr Philpott said results showed an improvement in those treated with the spray, which lasted for up to two hours.

It seemed to be most effective in people whose ability to smell was damaged by viral infection, called post viral olfactory loss or PVOL.

The loss of smell can have a significant impact on sufferers. It can often lead to reduced intake of nutritional food and weight loss as well as affecting personal relationships, social enjoyment and having a negative impact on psychological wellbeing.

Of the patients randomised to be treated with sodium citrate spray, one third showed an improvement with the peak effect seen between 15 and 30 minutes after treatment. Minor side effects noted by patients included a sore throat, slightly runny nose and itching.

Mr Philpott said: This study offers proof of concept that sodium citrate spray may enhance a damaged sense of smell in patients with partial loss of smell not caused by obstructions.

Further study in the form of larger clinical trials with patients applying the treatment regularly would help inform whether this treatment should be offered routinely by doctors. It could quite easily and safely be formulated into a treatment to provide temporary relief from smell loss, enhancing the quality of life of patients with very few side effects.

The research was done in UK by a team led by Mr Philpott and mirrors work done in Germany by Professor Thomas Hummel at the Dresden Smell and Taste Clinic.

The report, A randomised controlled trial of sodium citrate spray for non-conductive olfactory disorders is published in the journal Clinical Otolaryngology, DOI: 10.1111/coa.12878 - http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/coa.12878/abstract

This Morning’s Dr Zoe Williams: Losing weight for good is about lifestyle change – Express.co.uk

Posted: April 8, 2017 at 11:40 pm

PH

With wedding season nearly upon us and the summer holidays looming, its time to start thinking about shaping up. So weve asked This Mornings Dr Zoe Williams, a former Gladiator and practising GP with a special interest in obesity and weight management, for tips on getting fit for summer. Zoe says it isnt about quick fixes, but advises us that by picking up weights, finding a slimming pal and being more mindful about what we eat, we can be looking our best by the time summer rolls around

Dont resist resistance exercises

Zoe says: To tone up your bingo wings or tummy, you need to build muscle but youll never see those muscles unless you lose the fat thats on top of them. The best exercise to get rid of fat and tone up muscle is resistance training, which basically means exercising using any opposing force dumb-bells, your body weight, tins of beans that cause your muscles to contract. Mix arm exercises with burpees, lunges, squats, star jumps and push-ups.

You dont have to join a gym

Zoe says: If you dont fancy joining a gym, you can incorporate resistance training into your everyday activities. For example, walk home with your shopping bags instead of taking the bus, and take steps two at a time to build muscle in your legs.

The best way to lose weight

Zoe says: If youre trying to achieve fat loss, what you eat is the single most important factor. Exercise alone will not do it. The good news is that you dont have to cut your food intake drastically, just be more selective and eat more healthily. If you have at least five portions of fruit and veg a day, some lean protein, healthy fats and whole-grain carbs, youre likely to be too full to want junk food or empty calories.

Sugar is not the enemy

Zoe says: While its correct that refined, processed sugars are terrible for us, the amount found in fruit and veg is relatively low. A medium orange has about 80 calories and lots of nutrients, and by eating the fruit whole you get the fibre content, too, which will keep you fuller for longer.

This is why smoothies and fruit juice are not a good idea once you blend and break down the structure of fruit or veg, the fibre is altered and your body absorbs it quickly, so you wont feel full for long. And youll consume about five oranges in one glass of juice, which is a lot of calories and sugar compared to the amount that comes from actually eating the whole fruit.

You can lose weight fast

Zoe says: Losing weight for good is about lifestyle change. But if youve got a holiday or event coming up and are desperate to look slimmer, you can achieve rapid weight loss in a short period with an extreme diet, even though it may be mostly water weight that comes off. Some achieve good results on a low-carb or carb-free diet thats easy to follow.

Paleo, Durkin & Atkins, the most popular diets explained

Consider fasting

Zoe says: Theres emerging evidence that the longer you can go overnight without eating, the better for your health as well as for your calorie intake. Leaving 15 hours between dinner and breakfast is good for weight loss and theres evidence it can lower the risk of diseases such as breast cancer and diabetes. The 5:2 diet where you eat 500-600 calories two days a week and regularly on other days has been shown to reduce the risk of all kinds of diseases.

Cultivate mindfulness

Zoe says: If theres one thing you can do to shed pounds, its to keep a strict food diary. We put so much food in our mouths that were not aware of. If you log what you eat in a diary or phone app like MyFitnessPal and tot up the calories, youll be able to see where youre going wrong. You might realise that a small bar of chocolate has as many calories as a whole plate of veggies, and make decisions accordingly.

Get a buddy

Zoe says: The psychology of weight loss says that attempting it as part of a team can work better than going it alone. If youre slimming and/or exercising with a buddy or group, you wont want to let them down, so youre less likely to eat that chocolate bar. Being part of a group may also tap into your competitive side and provide added incentive.

Avoid feeders

Zoe says: Tackle people in your life who encourage you to eat or drink more than you want: colleagues who are always bringing in cake, the friend who urges you to have another pint. Try to enlist their support instead by saying: Im doing a diet, so itd be a great favour if you didnt offer me any.

Be naughty now and then

Zoe says: From Monday to Friday I dont buy any unhealthy food, so its not in the house. I prepare all my own meals and take lunch with me, or if Im eating out Im as careful as possible.

But because food is a great source of pleasure, we shouldnt deny ourselves. So at weekends or if Im going out for dinner, I eat whatever I want. You have to get that balance right.

Iggy Azalea Says She Lost 15 Pounds in a Week From Twerking – SELF

Posted: April 8, 2017 at 11:40 pm

While promoting her music video for her newest single Mo Bounce, Iggy Azalea told a radio station that she lost 15 pounds in one week by dancing to her new twerk -heavy song.

"It's a lotI went on a meal plan before the video because I knew I would have to be dancing fairly skimpily dressed," she said, according to E! News . "I did a lot of rehearsals actually, and man I lost 15 pounds in a week dancing to that song!"

Iggy may or may not have been exaggerating, but even so, rapid weight loss like what she's describing isn't exactly healthyin fact, for most, it's flat-out dangerous. Doctors usually recommend no more than 1 to 2 pounds of weight loss a week, depending on your medical history. Anything more than that often means it's been done through unsafe dieting practices that can have major consequences for your health.

Clifton Page , M.D., sports medicine physician at the UHealth Sports Medicine Institute at the University of Miami, tells SELF that one tell-tale sign of rapid weight loss is loss of fluid and dehydration"meaning you're not actually losing pounds of fat, but rather depriving your body of the water it needs to function. Losing water weight can disrupt the bodys systems and lead to cardiac arrhythmias, increased cramping, muscle damage, and kidney damage. "It can put a hit on your body and can lead to irreversible damage," he says.

Our bodies need water and other fluids to function properly, and if you become dehydrated, some of these processes may not function normally, womens health expert Jennifer Wider , M.D., previously told SELF . Severe dehydration can have dire consequences. Those consequences can include heat stroke or exhaustion, seizures, and even death in the most extreme cases, according to Mayo Clinic.

Experts also note that losing lots of weight quickly usually isn't a sign of increased exercising, as Iggy suggests, but rather because of over-restricting calories. Not eating enough can lead to lack of nutrients, low energy, constipation, constant feelings of hunger and thirst, and irritability. Nutritionists usually warn that women who want to lose weight should not go under 1,200 calories a day, but your personal number is dependent on many factors, including your basal metabolic rate (the amount of calories your body burns at a resting state) as well as how much activity you do in a day. You can read more about calories and weight loss here .

No matter what, chances are if Iggy did experience a significant amount of weight loss in a short time, the results would be temporary, rather than sustainable. "If she was to go back to her normal eating behavior, she'd likely regain some of that lost weight," Christine Ann Pellegrini , Ph.D., an assistant professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, tells SELF. In short, losing a lot of weight quickly is dangerous and ineffective. So if you catch Iggy Azalea's newest single, let it inspire you to dance, but do it for the fun of itnot because you want to twerk your way to weight loss.

Weight loss – mum dropped five dress sizes doing THIS simple exercise at home – Express.co.uk

PA Real Life

Rowena Wood, 26, from Uckfield in East Sussex, saw her weight fluctuate by five stone, leaving her with a mum-tum.

Now, after overcoming post-natal depression, following the twins birth in July 2014, and thanks to her unique baby work-outs, Rowena, has lost four stone and gained thousands of Instagram followers, after posting about her progress. She has shared her story at the same time as one man who was dumped for being too fat - but now has the body of his dreams.

The former care worker said: Max and Millie are two-years-old now and doing really well.

Theyve helped me to lose my baby weight and kept me going. On days when I cant go to the gym, I still get a work out by taking them to the park.

Now I look back at myself and I dont know who I was. Ive come such a long way.

She continued: I feel so body confident now. I didnt when I had the twins. I would never have bought a bikini and now Im thinking about getting one. Its a great feeling.

Rowena met the twins dad on Facebook when she was just 19 and they soon started trying for a baby. They were married two years later, but still she hadnt fallen pregnant.

After two years of trying, they went for fertility tests and were advised that IVF would give them the best chance of having a family.

Scarlett Moffatt highlights her dramatic weight loss in unseen bikini picture

Just two months later, Rowena who has since separated from her husband, due to the strain this all put on their marriage had a positive pregnancy test.

I tested four days early in December 2013, she said. Id been told testing too early could give a false reading, but I couldnt wait!

I saw the positive symbol and I phoned my then-husband straight away. We told everyone that evening and started to cry.

Two months later, they were even more delighted when learned they were expecting twins, discovering soon after that they were having a boy and a girl.

But pregnancy wasnt easy for Rowena, who suffered terrible morning sickness and lost 7lbs in the first 16 weeks, dropping down to 8st 3lbs.

I couldnt eat or keep anything down, she said. The thought of food made me sick.

Fortunately, her babies remained healthy and, as her sickness subsided four months into her pregnancy, Rowena was able to start eating again.

Now in her second trimester, she was eating for three binging on burgers every morning and gaining a shocking five stone by the time she was due.

PA Real Life

On July 24 2014 Rowena gave birth to Max, weighing 5lbs 13oz, and Millie, weighing 6lbs 3ozs via caesarean section at Pembury Hospital.

I felt overwhelmed, but also felt love for them instantly, Rowena said, recalling the first time she held them.

Although they were doing well, Rowena and her babies were kept in overnight to recover.

But, early the next morning, she started to feel dizzy and realised something was wrong.

She explained: I stood up and said to the nurse, I think Im going to pass out. Everything went black. Its a blur but I thought I was going to die.

When Rowena woke up, she was told shed lost 1.5 litres of blood.

At the time, doctors suggested it could be that they cut through her placenta, but they couldnt be sure. Rowena has not spoken to doctors again about this.

Fortunately, she soon recovered from the episode, but it left her shaken.

PA Real Life

I wanted to be left alone, she said. I suddenly felt anxious.

When she returned home five days later, she was still feeling out of sorts.

I didnt want to leave the house. Something wasnt right, she said.

My husband stayed home from work for six weeks, to share the responsibility, but when he went back, I felt like I couldnt do it. I told my mum I couldnt cope, because I didnt think I was a good mum.

I felt guilty. Id wanted kids so much, and now I didnt know what to do.

Her husband and the couples mums drew up a rota, so someone was always there to help Rowena with the twins.

And weeks after they were born, she was diagnosed with post-natal depression and anxiety.

Desperate to regain control, she started to limit what she was eating and her weight plummeted to just eight stone.

I had cellulite, a kangaroo pouch. Id gone from skinny to massive. I was ashamed of how I looked

Rowena Wood

I gave my food to our dogs, she said. My doctor was concerned though, that it was becoming anorexia, and said, eat anything.

Rowena was prescribed antidepressants, which helped to balance her mood, but also caused food cravings and within four months she piled weight on again.

She said: It took a while for them to kick in, but then I didnt care what I ate.

I think the medication caused me to over-eat. I ate sandwiches and cakes. I was never full. I just ate and ate.

I think getting bigger, and how I felt about myself, made me comfort eat too.

In four months, she gained just over five stone and went from a size 6/8 to a size 16/18.

Her fluctuating weight left her with saggy skin around her stomach, rolls of fat and cellulite.

I hated looking in the mirror, she said. I had cellulite, a kangaroo pouch. Id gone from skinny to massive. I was ashamed of how I looked. I remember thinking, oh my god, look at the state of me, this is it now.

PA Real Life

But early last year, she bumped in to a neighbour Amanda, who went to a local gym and encouraged Rowena to join her. With some gentle encouragement, she started exercising with Amanda three times a week.

Now she goes to the gym five times a week and eats healthily, too, opting for porridge for breakfast, yoghurt, and salmon or chicken, vegetables and rice for dinner.

And she incorporates her twin workouts into her daily exercise plan. It took Rowena a year to lose about four stone and to look and feel better.

She explained: Soon I felt strong and happier. Going to the gym was an instant pick-me-up. I kept active every day, by doing press ups with the twins on my back, or doing lunges pushing their pram.

Last May Rowena posted a photo on her Instagram page: x_miss_fitness_mummy_rolo_x, of how she looked during her pregnancy, beside one taken after months of working out and was amazed by the response.

She said: I had women messaging me, such beautiful messages, saying, I wish I could be like you, youre such an inspiration.

These were women whod had babies and post-natal depression and didnt know how to admit it. I said to Mum, Can you believe it?

Now I give advice to women, saying start light at the gym and do what feels comfortable. Maybe even work out with your babies, like I do.

About 200,000 Americans undergo weight loss surgery every year, choosing methods like gastric bypass, banding, or surgical balloons to shrink the stomach and decrease food intake.

Now, doctors have another option for patients, when diet and exercise is not enough.

Standing 6-feet-4-inches tall, 44-year-old Wilcoxon leaves a big impression.

These days, Wilcoxon is more than 135 pounds lighter after a lifetime struggle with diet and exercise that impacted his life and his health.

"I sat in my chair for probably the last two years before I had this done," Wilcoxon said.

"When it's your husband, you don't want anything to happen to him. I'm getting emotional here. I don't want him to die," said wife Christy Wilcoxon.

"What the device is is a modified feeding tube with a larger external portion and a smaller internal portion," Kushnir said.

Thirty minutes after a meal, Eric Wilcoxon connects the tube to a water canister, and pumps out about one-third of his stomach.

"Similar to what happens with weight loss surgery, some of the food you eat doesn't go where it naturally would, which helps you lose weight because you don't absorb as many of the calories," Kushnir said.

"A lot of people do think it's gross, but I'm really not overly concerned about what other people think," Eric Wilcoxon said.

"People don't comprehend how much you have to chew in order to do this. This tube in my belly is no bigger than an ink pen sitting on your desk," Eric Wilcoxon said.

But Eric Wilcoxon credits that tube, plus a healthy diet with allowing him to do things he couldn't before, like coach his son's football team.

The FDA approved the Aspire Assist last year for obese patients. Patients must not have undergone any other surgical weight-loss procedure to be considered for aspire assist. Unlike other weight-loss procedures, the Aspire Assist device can be removed.
