Will Weight Loss Surgery Stick for Mama June? A Status Update on … – E! Online

Mama June can take a few notes from these fellow stars.
As the reality mom returns to life as a newly formed size 4, she aims to never get back to her former 460-pound frame. "I can promise you I'm never going back to that size," she toldPeople. "I'm happy where I'm at."
However, as was depicted on her series,Mama June: From Not to Hot, shedding those hundreds of pounds was not a simple feat, mentally or physically. Instead, coupled with diet and exercise, the 37-year-old underwent a sleeve gastrectomy, more commonly known as "gastric sleeve" surgery. The procedure involves cutting the stomach to reduce its size, and therefore, promote weight loss.
She is certainly not the first famous person to undergo a form of weight loss surgery and see success. Instead, she joins a group of stars who've not only changed their lives through such procedures, but for many, also faced a few setbacks. Here's a progress report on them and the advice they live by today:

Al Roker
After undergoing gastric bypass surgery in 2002, theTodayweatherman shed nearly 200 pounds and has maintained the weight loss ever since. While he recently had to go under the knife for knee replacement surgery after years of carrying the weight and a bad car accident damaged his original knee.
Fortunately, the surgery went off without a hitch and Roker was back on television in a matter of weeks. Despite one 40-pound relapse and an unfortunate pooping incident at the White House, the gastric bypass significantly helped the star make strides in his weight loss journey. However, Mama June, be cautiousdiet and exercise should never stop.
"You can defeat the bypass, just as you can defeat any diet you're on," he once said. "You have to be constantly vigilant."

Sharon Osbourne
While the television personality shed weight after having adjustable gastric band, more commonly known as a lap-band, done in 1999, she admitted that she found ways to manipulate her restricted stomach to eat more.
"The band was not the solution to my weight struggles, as I had hoped it would be. It was just like everything else, you find a way around it," she wrote on her diet blog at the time. "And I found out that if I had a glass of wine, it loosened it up and I could eat whatever I wanted, so it became redundant."
After complaints of constant vomiting and feeling like a "cheat," she had the band removed in 2006 and relied on losing weight with diet and exercise alone.

Lauren Manzo
The fellow former reality star, who appeared onReal Housewives ofNew JerseyandManzo'd With Children, went in for a lap-band five years ago and never looked back.
"It wasn't anything to do with television. I just hated me," Manzo candidly told Bethenny Frankel on her former talk show. "I have done every diet. I have struggled my entire life. I started to go into a depression and now I'm happy and I've never been happier. It's the best thing I've ever done."
Jordan Strauss, Gregg DeGuire/WireImage.com
Randy Jackson
The formerAmerican Idoljudge elected to have gastric bypass surgery in 2003 and lost more than 100 pounds. He later revealed that he had been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
"To me, it's a last-resort option," he told Wendy Williamsof the surgery. "It's a jump-start, but you still have to do everything you can to keep it off."
As for advice, he's a cheerleader for portion size.
"You gotta have control over the amounts that you eat," he suggested. Sure, you can have a cookie, "but don't eat the whole bag."

Are Hormones the Secret to Weight Loss? – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
Posted: April 7, 2017 at 3:44 pm
The secret to losing weight could be in your hormones.
Research shows hormone imbalance can have a huge impact on your back and forth weight gain, but a group of women in Rockwall are undergoing hormone replacement therapy to help aid in their quest to lose weight.
Nowadays, lunch at the office tastes a lot different for co-workers Carol Dogans, Margaret Svoboda, Carol McCreanor, Lou Johnson and Robin Nelson.
"Just a few months ago, we would have been ordering a tin of pizza," says Nelson.
Now, they say, making better decisions about food comes easy and is one of the perks they've seen since undergoing hormone replacement therapy in at Evexias Medical Center in Rockwall.
"I completely eliminated sugar and I feel so much better," says Dogans.
As part of the therapy, a trained medical provider inserts a pellet of either estrogen or testosterone inside the body.
We asked Lara Lovell, a family nurse practitioner at Evexias how it helps someone lose weight.
"It's more of the function of getting you back to the place where you really feel like getting up and going and doing what you used to like to do: exercises, getting to the gym," says Lovell.
Lovell says not only does it boost your energy, it can increase your mood, improve your skin and quality of sleep, even increase libido, for men and women.
"When we drop below the 800 threshold for testosterone levels in men, we start to see that chronic disease can sneak up on us, things like diabetes, even osteoporosis," says Lovell.
The ladies have experienced most of the benefits.
"I have never known sleep until after being pelleted, honestly," says Nelson.
"I had zero libido. once I got pelleted, I realized it's me, not my husband," says Dogans, whose husband also underwent the pellet treatment.
But what about weight loss?
All but one have yet to shed the number of pounds they had hoped for, but they say they're okay with with that fact because it's no longer about the number of the scale.
"I'm less concerned about the weight now because I feel so much better. I feel the weight is going to come off with the choices that I'm making," says Nelson.
Experts say there are online assessments available to see if hormone therapy is right for you.
They say most women experience hormone imbalances after the birth of their second child.

‘My 600-lb Life’: James fails weight-loss, blames Dr. Now and heads explode – Blasting News
Posted: April 7, 2017 at 3:44 pm
791-lb James K. didn't lose weight on "My 600-lb Life" -- in fact he gained 153 pounds and is blaming Dr. Younan Nowzaradan. And heads have collectively exploded. Enraged fans want to know what's up. Did Dr. Now fail to help the bariatric surgery patient with weight-loss? Is James' enabling girlfriend Lisa at fault? How about his teen daughter Bayley who had to quit school to care for dad? Who's to blame when an obese man eats 10,000 calories a day?
Dr. Now told the nearly 800-lb man that he would have to shed 200 pounds before gastric bypass surgery could be safely performed in Houston. In preparation, Dr. Nowzaradan gave the bed-ridden man his homework -- a 1,200-calorie-a-day diet. Lisa moved heaven and earth to find a vehicle large enough to accomdate her plus-sized significant other. She started a GoFundMe to raise money to get him to Texas. Bayley missed school so she could cook for, bathe, and feed her dad. "#My 600-lb Life" readied for the reality television episode. But meanwhile, back in Kentucky, James kept eating.
As everyone worked to save James' life, he just complained. This hurt, that hurt, he had cellulitis and leaking lymphedema fluid from the obesity. All patients feel pain, and those who accept responsiblity for it, like Chad Dean, can heal. In-denial James just kept whining and making Lisa and Bayley cook him supersize meals, which they felt guilty to feed him but were afraid not to. What happened to that 1,200 calorie diet? James claimed he was following it "his way" (cheating constantly). For whatever reason, the family went ahead and made the trip to Houston (James kvetching all the way) even though they'd been overfeeding him and he'd been overeating. They seemed to think that somehow "My 600-lb Life" would magically make him lose weight. The only one who didn't fall for it was Bayley. And Dr. Now.
At weigh-in (surprise, surprise) James hadn't lost and had gained weight. Dr. Nowzaradan hospitalized him and put him on an 800-calorie diet. He finally shed some pounds and was released to finish losing for bariatric surgery. At his next weigh in, James jumped to 844 pounds. What about the diet? He and Lisa vowed he'd followed it -- mostly. But Dr. Now said a 153-lb weight gain meant he was eating (drum roll) 10,000 calories daily! Lisa felt terrible and James let her take the blame. He also faulted Dr. Now for not getting him a nutritionist like he wanted and for not helping him implement the diet. The reality TV physician called BS, saying James and Lisa had been offered loads of support which they had ignored. The show ended as it did with co-star Steven Assanti. James K. went home, still obese, bullying, and BS-ing. #RealityTV #Weightloss

This new diet will make you lose weight quickly – Blasting News
Posted: April 7, 2017 at 3:43 pm
Everyone is looking for a good way to lose weight quickly. Regardless of whether you have ten pounds or one hundred pounds to lose. So what is this new #diet that helped me lose 10 pounds in two weeks? It's called the low-carb lifestyle.
It is exactly what it sounds like. Your diet consists of limiting your carbohydrate intake in order to have your body burn fat versus carbohydrates. The amount of carbohydrates allowed in your diet daily depends on many variables. If you weigh more you generally limit your intake significantly at first. Depending on the diet this could be done by cutting carbohydrates down to twenty or less per day.
In the beginning phases of the low carb lifestyle, you will be eating meat and green veggies mostly. The meats cannot have breading or spices that include sugar on it. If it does, this will include some hidden carbohydrates. You are also only allowed to drink water and unsweetened teas. You may have some diet soda in moderation, but some diets do not allow for certain sugar substitutes. For example, on the first phase of the #Atkins diet, many sites say you cannot have aspartame but are only allowed Splenda or Stevia.
There are many different websites that will help you to choose the diet that is correct for you. Some of the diets even offer applications to download to your phone or tablet that makes for easy access to keep track of your intake for the day.
Atkins offers an application for your phone that allows you to track your weight and your diet. It also allows you to sync a fitness tracker and keep track of your steps all in the same location. Another cool feature on the Atkins app is that you can search Atkins friendly recipes. You can search by the phase of the program that you are in or by ingredient.
The keto diet is very similar to Atkins. You have to limit your carbohydrate intake strictly. The idea of limiting your carbs is to send your body into ketosis and burn fat. The limitations on this diet are much more strict than Atkins.
I have been eating low carb for the past two weeks. I have lost twelve pounds just by changing my diet. I have done nothing else in the form of exercise. I go about my life as normal and limit my carb intake to under twenty-five per day. Online you can also join in groups and see other people who have lost weight as well.
Regardless of your opinion on the low carb lifestyle, it does actually work to #Lose Weight. Many people who have lost weight on the diet claim to gain it back just as fast. This diet is not a quick fix. It is a lifestyle change that you must maintain for the rest of your life.

‘Yo-Yo’ Dieting Does No Favors for Your Heart – Everyday Health (blog)
Posted: April 7, 2017 at 3:43 pm
Yo-yo dieting -- quickly losing weight only to promptly regain it -- may raise the risk of heart problems, a new study suggests.
People who experience regular weight fluctuations of 8 to 10 pounds are much more likely to suffer from heart disease, heart attack, stroke and other heart-related maladies than people who only experienced shifts of 2 pounds or less, said lead researcher Dr. Sripal Bangalore. He is an interventional cardiologist with NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City.
In particular, yo-yo dieters had more than twice the risk of death, heart attack or stroke compared with people who maintained a relatively stable body weight, Bangalore said.
"For every 1.5- to 2-pound change in weight fluctuation, the risk of any coronary or cardiovascular event was increased by 4 percent, and the risk of death by 9 percent," Bangalore said.
Patients with heart disease are encouraged to drop some pounds if they are overweight or obese, but it is very hard to maintain weight loss, Bangalore said. Weight gain frequently follows weight loss, falling into a rhythmic pattern doctors call "weight cycling."
To see whether weight cycling had any effect on heart health, Bangalore and his colleagues analyzed medical data from 10,000 patients with hardening of the arteries in a clinical trial to test the effect of statin medications.
RELATED: Are Vegetarian Diets Heart-Healthier?
The patients were tracked over four years, with doctors regularly taking measure of their health and their body weight.
Researchers found that people whose weight cycled dramatically were more likely to experience heart disease, heart attack, cardiac arrest, blocked arteries, angina, stroke or heart failure.
Their risk of death was 124 percent higher, heart attack 117 percent higher, and stroke 136 percent higher, after accounting for other factors, the study said.
Bangalore thinks dramatic changes in weight likely place a lot of stress on the body, and also causes hormonal changes that affect the heart.
But yo-yo dieting might only be an indication of deeper medical problems affecting a person, said Linda Van Horn, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
Yo-yo dieters in the study were more likely to be heavier, smoke and have high blood pressure and diabetes, said Van Horn, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association. Twice as many yo-yo dieters actually developed diabetes during the study.
"When you go down that list, some huge issues jump right out at you," Van Horn said. "Across all of the likely candidates for what contributed to illness or death, the yo-yo dieting in and of itself was not the culprit. Those who were yo-yo dieters, as much as they tried to lose weight to lower their risk factors, still succumbed to the very risk factors we know all too well."
Overweight or obese people should still try to lose weight, since dropping any excess pounds will improve their health, Bangalore and Van Horn said.
The key is to undertake weight loss as a long-term effort involving diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes you can maintain over the long haul, they said.
"This shouldn't deter anyone from losing weight, but this is all the more reason to say that once you've done the hard work of losing weight, it's really important to keep the pounds off for a long period of time," Bangalore said.
People can do that by avoiding fad diets, and instead focusing on healthy eating and regular exercise, Van Horn said. They also should give themselves a break if their efforts don't immediately pay off with dramatic weight loss.
"Maybe you don't lose quite as much as you could if you starve yourself, but the real trick is keeping it off over the course of your life," she said. "The only way that really is successful is adopting a lifestyle that includes the very things we all know that contribute to healthy weight."
The study was published April 5 in theNew England Journal of Medicine.

The Body Coach’ Joe Wicks reveals his one top tip for fat loss success – Daily Star
Posted: April 7, 2017 at 3:43 pm
WANT to lose fat? You should do this one simple thing.
GETTY
Hes famous for his get ripped quick mantra, but Joe Wicks has revealed his one top tip for fat loss success.
Creator of The Body Coach, Joe has amassed an impressive 1.7 million Instagram followers including Ellie Goulding, John Terry and Joey Essex.
Since graduating with a degree in sports science, the fitness fanatic has launched a successful diet and fitness philosophy.
But what is his one top tip for fat loss? Meal preparation.
My top tip for fat loss success is prep like a boss. All that means is that youre going to sit down, plan your meals for the week, go food shopping, get all those ingredients, go home and start to prep your meals, Joe told Business Insider.
If youre really busy that might mean doing it on a Sunday for three to four hours, but you are going to set yourself up for the whole week.
Good news dieters! The 23 foods that contain NO calories because you burn more than you consume as you eat
1 / 23
APRICOTS - Calorie content: 12 kcals per apricotEating apricots is said to help reduce the risk of strokes, and heart attacks. They're also full of vitamin C, potassium and dietary fibre, which all promote good heart health
Joe added the busier you are, the more you need to prep.
If you do work silly hours and youre not coming home until really late, the best thing to do is prep as many meals in advance as you can.
That means when you walk in from the gym or youve had a long day at work, your meal is there either in the fridge or the freezer and that is going to guarantee fat loss success and set you up for success for the whole week.
Joe also champions high intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts as he believes no one has time to spend hours at the gym.
I get my clients training for less time but at higher intensity with HIIT cardio workouts, the trainer told the Daily Star Online.
HIIT is awesome for burning body fat because you not only burn calories during the session you also burn calories for hours after.
My clients aim to do four to five HIIT sessions per week lasting no longer than 25 minutes. This makes it perfect for busy people.
"The harder you train the greater the after burn so push hard in each session.

Green tea supplements for weight loss? Not so fast! – KOMO News
Posted: April 7, 2017 at 3:43 pm
You may have heard that green tea can be good for your heart. But dont confuse a cup of tea with green tea extract powder. Some supplements containing the ingredient are promising weight loss and a healthier metabolism but the experts at Consumer Reports have concerns, because higher concentrations of green tea extract can be really dangerous because it can potentially cause serious liver damage. Plus the herb itself has been found to alter the effectiveness of a long list of drugs including certain antidepressants and certain anti-clotting medications. It can also elevate your heart rate and blood pressure. And researchers suggest that up to 10 percent of people who suffer acute liver failure from green tea extract may die as a result.
Consumer Reports put Green Tea Extract Powder on its list of 15 supplement ingredients to avoid. The manufacturers who make these supplements are not required to prove to federal regulators that their products are effective or even safe before theyre sold, so you really dont know what youre buying.
And studies have also found that even in high doses green tea probably wont help you lose weight. Its true that green tea can raise your metabolic rate, so you burn more calories, but thats probably just due to its caffeine and catechins - the antioxidants found in green tea. Consumer Reports says most people can reap the health benefits of green tea with a couple of cups a day.
Consumer Reports has long advocated for measures that would improve supplement safety and give the FDA greater authority to remove potentially harmful dietary supplements from the marketplace. For now, check out its list of 15 supplement ingredients to avoid which includes green tea extract powder, kava, caffeine powder and red yeast rice.
