Consumer Reports: New Ads for Contrave Weight Loss Pill
CONSUMER REPORTS -- You may have seen the television commercials for the prescription weight-loss pill Contrave. Contrave is the combination of two older drugs - the antidepressant bupropion and the addiction-treatment drug naltrexone. Its ads say the drug works on the brain to reduce hunger and control cravings. The FDA approved Contrave is for obese people or who are overweight with a body mass index of 27 or higher AND who also suffer from serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes.
The commercial cites studies in which patients who took Contrave along with diet and exercise lost approximately 2 to 4 times more weight than those who did diet and exercise alone. However, a Consumer Reports analysis of the 3 clinical trials used to gain FDA approval of the drug, shows the drug works but the amount of additional weight loss is small and could pose serious health risks.
Contrave can cause anxiety, insomnia and headaches. But also serious health problems, such as liver damage, seizures, increased blood pressure and possible heart risks. The people who took it up to 56 weeks lost only five to nine pounds more on average than those who took a placebo.
Consumer Reports advises to speak with your doctor about the risks and different weight-loss options. Consumer Reports health experts say its best to lose weight the safer, proven way, by eating less and exercising.
If you've been unable to lose weight on your own, ask your doctor about intensive behavioral programs that have at least 12 sessions a year and include multiple strategies to help you switch to a healthier diet and increase physical activity.

Losing weight isnt easy and dieters often fail multiple times before getting it right.
The reasons are multifaceted. Many assume that exercise will solve the weight-loss dilemma it wont or that fat will make you fat. Wrong again.
Here are five reasons your diet may be doomed:
Calories from refined carbohydrates and sugar cause you to eat more, without feeling satisfied. Calories from healthy fats, fiber rich sources, and protein, however are metabolized differently and more likely to lead to effective weight loss. Author Michael Pollen defined food as something that comes from nature, was fed from nature, and will eventually rot.
Are you starting your day with empty carbs? Try oatmeal with fruits and nuts for a healthy breakfast.
Cereal, toast with jam, or a big glass of OJ are breakfast staples, but studies show that starting the day with protein, instead of sugary carbohydrates leads to reduced hunger and cravings later in the day. Aim for at least 15 grams of high quality protein in the morning, such as plain yogurt with mixed nuts and hempseed, a plant based protein shake, scrambled eggs, or nut butter on sprouted bread.
Sleep is glorious, and the benefits of getting enough of it are numerous. Studies show clear associations between a lack of sleep with overeating, weight gain, and obesity. If youre struggling with your weight loss efforts, getting at least 8 hours a sleep a night may make all the difference.

We often eat because we are bored, stressed, tired, thirsty, or simply because our favorite show is on. Instead, we should view food as fuel, not entertainment. I advise my patients to put themselves on a hunger scale with 1 being starving and 10 being stuffed. Only at a 3 or a 4 should they eat, and they should stop at 5 or 6. Listening to your hunger isnt always easy, but master it and your chances of weight loss go up.

One study found that individuals that had successfully lost weight were frequently met with challenges with friends, family and co-workers who undermined weight-loss efforts. In response, they would regain the weight.

The issue of extreme weight cutting in MMA has been a bone of contention for many years now. It is still an all too common, yet hugely dangerous practice, which can be fatal if fighters get it wrong.
Essentially, weight cutting is the process of rapid weight loss in the hours before a fight. The fighter wants to qualify for as low a weight division as possible so they can gain a size and strength advantage over their opponent. The fighter does this by using various methods to extract as much water from their body as possible.
Whilst the dangers associated with extreme weight cutting can easily affect the professional athlete that competes on the global stage, it is fighters that compete on the regional circuit that are arguably more at risk as the vast majority of up and coming fighters do not have access to the appropriate level of nutritional or medical expertise necessary to guide them safely through an extreme weight cut.
This is something David Galbraith, a former professional MMA fighter and current owner of NewLife Gym, Resurgence Fight Team and MMA promotion SOMMA wants to change. For Galbraith, a fighters safety, both short and long term, is paramount and he plans on leading the charge in the UK to eliminate extreme weight cutting from the sport.
Galbraith said: NewLife Gym, Resurgence Fight Team and SOMMA are taking major steps to ensure the welfare of our fighters and to protect the longevity of our sport.
We have decided to formally implement a no dehydration policy for weight cuts. That means no saunas, no salt baths, no water loading or any other means of excessive heat based practice to ensure a fighter makes weight.
As a retired pro fighter myself, I have learnt from my past mistakes and over the course of the last three years I have actively taken steps to phase out excessive weight cutting. Our team is matched at a realistic weight and where appropriate we favour catch-weight fights.
Our athletes are supported throughout their entire fight camp to ensure they are on track to make weight. On our last show, SOMMA2, 90% of the team made weight via diet and nutrition alone with no need for heat based tactics.
We fully recognise the requirement for expert guidance when it comes to making fight weight and we are in talks with a well-regarded nutrition expert who shares our passion for safe and responsible weight cuts. Additionally, we have brought on board PK Fitness who are strength and conditioning specialists to work closely with our team to ensure we are not only reaching, but delivering on the above goals.
Unfortunately, weight cutting is something that has touched the hearts of many people due to the recent events which took place in Thailand with young Jordan Coe. I want to be clear that this isnt a reaction to his situation as we had already made these plans and have been putting measures in place over the last three years. It was by chance that our situation has coincided with this tragedy.
We are also implementing guidelines set by the The Scottish Government, Safe MMA & IMMAF which means our full Fight Team will be Safe MMA registered. NewLife Gym will pay each fighters membership for the first 12 months - but our intention is that we can continue to finance the membership for the duration of the fighters career with Resurgence.
In addition, all of our fighters and all the fighters competing on SOMMA will undergo blood tests taken by our in house doctor - who was the former doctor for major European promotion ACB.
We will be testing for blood borne viruses; Hep B, Hep C and HIV. The cost of the blood testing will initially be absorbed by NewLife Gym so the fighters wont need to dig into their own pockets. Furthermore, each fighter will be required to undergo the routine medical checks as advised by Safe MMA & IMMAF.
I firmly believe the above actions are truly in the best interests of fighter safety and this sentiment is echoed by my team of coaches, students and key players with in the MMA community. This is not an exhaustive list of actions. This is simply the start of a much larger campaign to raise the standards of quality and safety of MMA in Scotland and beyond.

Frontline Homecare Professionals Make a Difference in Keeping Diabetes In Check – Huffington Post

When a 92-year-old woman with dementia in my companys managed long term care (MLTC) plan had to switch from oral diabetes medication to insulin recently, Yael Reich, a nurse diabetes specialist with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY), was the person who arranged for a friend to administer the shots. In her dual role as diabetes educator and complex case manager, Yael advises VNSNY nurses across New York City, Westchester and Nassau on how to help our patients and health plan members with diabetes manage their glucose levels. Approximately one-third of our patients have diabetes in addition to their primary diagnosis, says Yael, whos worked with VNSNY for 23 years and has been a diabetes specialist and educator since 2004. This means our nurses are treating thousands of patients with diabetes on any given day.
Type 2 diabetes, in which a persons blood glucose levels become chronically elevated, can lead to kidney and eye damage, cardiovascular disease and other health problems. In addition to reviewing with our nurses and their patients the proper way to administer diabetes medications that keep blood glucose levels under control, Yael will also explain to them how weight loss, a healthy diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes can help prevent diabetes in those who are at risk of developing it, and minimize the need for medication in those who already have diabetes.
According to the CDC, more than 29 million Americans are living with diabetes, and 86 million are living with prediabetes, a serious health condition that increases a persons risk of type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases. With type 2 diabetes rates in the U.S. continuing to riseone in eleven Americans now has the disease, according to the most recent estimates, including one out of four people aged 65 or olderunderstanding how to prevent and control the condition through lifestyle changes and proper medical care is more important than ever. And since people who have diabetes or are at high risk of developing the condition make up a disproportionate share of home care patients and clients, the visiting nurses and nurse educators employed by home care agencies like VNSNY play a lead role in helping to keep this dangerous condition in check.
Bridging the Gap Between Medical Advice and How People Really Live
One important way that frontline home care clinicians make a difference is by helping their patients bridge the gap between advice they receive from medical professionals and taking steps to follow this advice on a daily basis in the real world. For example, when registered nurse Sheniqua Johnson was providing care recently for a patient with elevated blood glucose levels, her patient agreed readily with her advice to avoid foods high in sugar and processed carbohydratesbut then consistently refused to act on her recommendations. He didnt want someone coming in from the outside telling him what to do, Sheniqua says. On speaking with him further during her home visits, she learned that he was originally from West Africa, and with that information in hand, she was able to engage him around healthy foods hed grown up with and steer him toward a healthier diet.
By visiting with people in their homes, our nurses and nurse educators also come to understand real-life barriers that may not be as obvious to other medical professionals. Fresh vegetables and fruit are often difficult to access in lower income neighborhoods, and can be costly when they are available. As a result, people frequently turn to more convenient and affordablebut less healthyalternatives. Nurse Johnson recalls caring for a woman who was struggling with diabetes, and noticing that her kitchen shelves were crowded with boxes of sugar-sweetened cereal. To save money, thats what I eat for dinner, the woman told her, explaining that she thought she was following her doctors instructions. Johnson was able to help her patient identify easy-to-prepare alternative foods, such as frozen vegetables and lentils, in her local grocery store, that she could buy for the same price to provide better nutrition and help keep blood glucose levels in check.
Our frontline clinicians can also help people who havent developed diabetes identify and correct their risk factors, by walking them through diabetes risk assessments such as the one the American Diabetes Association (ADA) offers onlinea test which you can take yourself by accessing it here. When an assessment indicates that someones risk of developing type 2 diabetes is high, our clinicians will then arrange for them to have their blood glucose levels tested to determine whether they have diabetes or prediabetes (an early warning sign that blood glucose levels arent being adequately controlled).
Encouraging Daily Diabetes-Fighting Behavior
Whether someone has diabetes, prediabetes, or is simply at risk of getting the disease, our nurses and diabetes educators regularly encourage them to take evidence-based steps to prevent diabetes from developing, or manage their condition more effectivelyincluding losing weight, engaging in physical activity each day, and eating healthier foods. Many of our home health aides are now also trained as Health Coaches, and are using proven techniques such as motivational interviewing to help patients make and maintain important lifestyle changes that help them better manage their diabetes and other chronic medical conditions.
In addition to frontline nurses, diabetes educators and home health aides at home care agencies, community-based clinicians also play a significant role in combating the diabetes epidemic. Primary care physicians now routinely refer patients to diabetes educators for practical advice on how to make changes in their daily diets and safely increase physical activity. This is one more confirmation that when it comes to defeating type 2 diabetes, the solution begins at home.

ATHENS, Ga. It used to be that coaches beamed with pride when they talked about the size of defensive lineplayers. The more pounds the better. Three-hundred pounds, the minimum. The closer to 350 the better.
Those days are gone, at least atGeorgia, and most of college football, where the proliferation of sped-up offenses has led to a need for speed and flexibility on defense.
Which is another reason you can expect a lot of snaps this season from Jonathan Ledbetter.
Yes, the rising junior actually put on weight just a couple pounds, up to 280, according to his Twitter feed. But when Kirby Smart saw peoples reactions, he disagreed with the notion Lebetterput on weight, and meant it as a compliment.
I think he looks better, I agree with you there, Smart said. I think hes transformed some of that. But its not actual pounds. Hes quicker. Hes playing faster.
What that means: Ledbetter, already one of the teams most talented defensive linemen, now also might have the best stamina, and he might be in such good condition that itll be hard to come out of the game.
Hes got the stamina to go play three-four plays in a row and go run plays down. Where some of those other guys, they cant do that, Smart said. You cant sub. (Offenses) are not going to let you sub. So how many guys can you play up front and just leave them in the game. Right now he may be the only guy thats playing at that level.
On the other side of it is Julian Rochester.
As a freshman last year, Rochester weighed in at 304 pounds and blended that with uncanny athleticism. The result was a 36-tackle, 2-sack season in which he started six gamesat defensive tackle.
Julian really surprised me last year. I havent seen a big guy like that who could move like that, senior outside linebacker Davin Bellamy said. And with our great strength and conditioning program hes kind of toned that body up, and hes moving better.
Indeed, Rochester dropped about 15 pounds in the offseason, at the request (OK, demand) of Bulldogs coaches. That put him a bit under 300 and ideally in better position to be another guy with the stamina to stay in the game when the plays are happening too quickly to sub.
But Smart isnt as impressed yet.
Julians the same guy right now that he was at the same time last year, Smart said. Julians got to improve. Hes got to work to get him in better conditioning shape. So the weight is really off the guy but hes not really playing fast. And I think its really important for him to do that.
If you go by the most recent roster and the listed weights in Georgias pre-Liberty Bowl media, most every defensive lineman has either lost weight or stayed about the same.
That includes the nose tackles, whose job it is to clog up the middle. They arent that big by old-school standards: John Atkins lostseven pounds, to 308, and DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle losttwo pounds, to 318. Compare that with the excitement around the program a few years ago to have John Jenkins and Kwame Geathers weighing about350 pounds.
Even after signing only two defensive linementhis year, Georgia has depthheading into the season. Six returning players started at least four games, plus key reserve Tyler Clark.Those seven combined for 208 tackles, 11 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss.
And yes, that includes Trent Thompson, the rising junior who isnt participating in spring practice because of shoulder surgery and amedical issuethat caused him to withdraw from classes. What is Thompson doing during practice? Hes running on the side, keeping off the pounds: He went from 309 at the end of last year to 295 in the most updated roster.
In the new world of college football, coacheswant defensive linemen svelte and fast, ready to chase down the ball carrier and stay on the field.

In the world of Instagram, there are many people who are famous for a multitude of reasons.
From the travel bloggers to the fashion bloggers, Instagram famous models and body positive warriors there is one sub-set who garners more of a cult fan base than the others.
These are the weight loss success stories.
People, usually women, who have lost large amounts of weight and regularly post before and after or progress photos gather thousands of followers who follow them for inspiration and motivation.
One of these women, Haley Smith, has lost an incredible 7.8st in a year and a half and she boasts an impressive 92.8k Instagram following.
This week US woman Haley spoke to Womens Health about her top weight loss tips:

1. Make small changes to your diet
Now, when I go on vacations, I don't have to sit things out because I feel too uncomfortable.
Haley said in the beginning she only made small changes to her diet.
Two of my biggest problems with food were eating late in the day and eating out all the time. So those were the first habits I focused on breaking. I decided that I would only eat out twice a week and stop eating after 8 p.m.something I still stick to today!
Now, I try to stick to balancing my food groups, eating out as little as I can, and just making conscious, healthy choices about what I eat.
A typical day for me starts with a protein shake for breakfast, grilled chicken with kale for lunch, and something similar for dinner, like a pork chop with broccoli.
However, Haley added that its all about balance and that shes practically addicted to chips.
2. Get moving
Haley said her exercise journey began by joining the Couch to 5k app so she could start to get into running.
After a while, she decided to join the gym and now trains around six days a week.
While this may not be for everyone, make sure you incorporate at least three half-hour sessions of exercise into each week.
3. Dont give up
Haley said her Instagram followers have been a big part of her motivation.
Im currently finishing up a project I call my "Year of Runs" where I ran one 5K every monthI even decided to cap it off by hosting my own virtual 5K with them!
There were so many times I wanted to call the challenge off, but I knew letting them down would cause me to let myself down.
My followers are so supportive and encouraging, and that community really helps keep my healthy lifestyle at the front of my mind every day.

4. Reap the benefits
Haley said her confidence levels have skyrocketed since she lost weight.
Now, when I go on vacations, I don't have to sit things out because I feel too uncomfortable or literally can't do something. I feel so much more in-control of my life.
5. Take it slow
Haley said her top tip would be to start small and take it slow.
Hard and fast diets or workout routines are too difficult to stick to for any extended period of time.
Because this is a lifestyle change rather than a quick fix, you have to be able to make those small, habit-breaking changes little by little.
Take it one day at a time.
