As the weather warms and we shed our winter coats, some of us worry about looking good in our spring clothes. After all, weve been covered up for months, but now its time to show some skin and enjoy the season.

Unfortunately, losing weight is not an easy task for many. If only there was a magic pill that could speed up the process.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH)approximately 15 percentof U.S. adults have used a weight-loss dietary supplement at some point in their lives. But do they work?

NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES:Your body needs magnesium make sure you're getting enough

Dietary supplements are not a magic bullet when it comes to weight loss.(Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Some experts say taking supplements may boost dieting efforts. However, the effectiveness and safety of them is a matter of debate. Several have been debunked as useless. While others, such as ephedra, also called ma huang, were actually taken off the U.S. market due to safety concerns.

Ephedra is a plant thats native to China. It contains substances that stimulate your nervous system, increase the amount of energy you burn, increase weight lossand may suppress your appetite. Once found in weight-loss supplements, ephedra was taken off the market in the United States in 2004 because of safety concerns. On the flip side, its hard to watch TV without seeing an ad for a pill that supposedly enables you to lose lots of pounds with little effort. Could these claims be correct or are trying these products a waste?

Studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Matt Johnson, owner of House of Nutrition in Poughkeepsie, saidweight-loss supplements are almost in demand as much as multivitamins. However, there is no magic bullet, no substitute for a clean diet or hard work.

However, some of his customers who take thermogenic fat burners have seen results, he said.

Certain combinations of supplements can create heat within the body," Johnson said. "The bodys natural response is to try and cool itself and as it does it releases body fat.

Ingredients in these products include caffeine from a natural source, such askola nut or guarana.

They are the core ingredients to create the heat needed, he said, noting that the formulas may also contain green tea and chromium.

One of Johnsons customers is Jason Asper. The Wallkillresident works out with his trainer, Rob Wolfe, at Golds Gym in Newburgh.

I started working with Rob back in October 2015. I weighed 450-plus pounds, and within a year, I weighed in at 274 pounds, he said, without takingsupplements during that year

Rob wanted to see what my body was naturally capable of before we started using weight-loss supplements," he said. "Around the 14-month mark my body slowed down the weight-loss and maintained that weight.

Once his weight-loss progress stalled, Wolfe suggested he try a thermogenic supplement.

Right now, I'm using a basic one that has caffeine and green tea extract," he said. "While my weight has not drastically changed since using them, I have noticed my energy in the gym is much higher, which allows me to have a better workout.

On your quest to shed pounds, its tempting to run to a health food store to check out the supplement section, but before you do, its best to have a complete medical exam, said Dr. Kelly G. Jennings, a naturopathic doctor in Rhinebeck. She recommends comprehensive blood work for her patients who want to lose weight, since oftentimes blood sugar levels need to be stabilized before one can meet his or herweight-loss goals. Examining and correcting unhealthy diets and sleep patterns are also key.

Most often there is a reason why someone isnt losing weight, Jennings said.

Lifestyle choices can impede weight loss.

You have to address underlying health imbalances first," she said. "Then supplements can come down the line.

For some, taking conjugated linoleic acid has helped them jump-start their diet. According to the NIH, studies show that this essential fatty acid may reduce body fat. Various experts feel it could also help build muscle and make you feel full.

It may help optimize the essential fatty acid profile, but its not a wonder drug, Jennings said, noting that it probably wont be effective if it isnt part of a sustainable weight-loss plan.

Another supplement that might help with losing weight is probiotics, which put good bacteria into your digestive tract. Effective digestion and elimination are key to overall health as well as slimming down, according to Jennings. For those who are deficient supplementing with vitamin D, which acts like a hormone in the body, probiotics may be beneficial since it can stabilize ones mood and curb cravings.

Chromium picolinateis another option some dieters try. When used in combination with other herbs and minerals it may stabilize blood sugar and help those on their quest to look their best, Jennings said.

While Jennings said she is not opposed to the use of supplements for some of her dieting patients after they learn how to adjust their lifestyles so they eat and sleep well, and optimize their metabolism, some health care experts are uncertain if they are helpful, and others dont see any merit in them at all.

Dr. Robert Rosenzweig, a gastroenterologist with offices in Poughkeepsie, Rhinebeck and Kingston, said theres not enough credible information available to assess the effectiveness of weight-loss supplements.

The products havent been proven to work or not work, he said. Most mainstream physicians dont have faith that theyve been studied enough.

People are wasting their money when they buy supplements, saidRoufia Payman, supervisor of Outpatient Nutrition Education at Northern Dutchess Hospital. Weve become a nation that wants immediate satisfaction, but that doesnt work. Unfortunately, like everything else in life, you have to work at it.

What is effective are lifestyle changes, such asstarting your day with healthy protein and a veggie boost, she said. Eating soluble fiber, such aschia seeds, can also help with dieting, since it makes you feel full.

When you want to lose weight, vegetables are your best friends, Payman said. The best course of action isnt popping a pill. Its paying attention to the type of food and the quality and quantity of food you eat, and how much you move.

The following are supplements that research and anecdotal evidence suggest aid in weight-loss. Before taking any its best to check with your health care provider.

Caffeineeither added to a weight-loss supplement or as an herbal source that naturally contains caffeine, such as guarana or kola nut, can act as a diuretic and cause thermogenesis. Possible side effects: Caffeine can cause sleep disturbances and feelings of nervousness, jitterinessand shakiness. It can be toxic when used in high doses.

ChromiumPicolinate is a combination of the mineral chromium and picolinic acid. It helps regulate blood sugar. Studies suggest chromium may help you lose a small amount of weight and body fat. Possible side effects: headaches, nausea, dizziness.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid is a fat found mostly in dairy and beef. Studies say that it may help curb body fat, boost muscleand help you stay full. Possible side effects: upset stomach, nausea, loose stools.

Glucomannan comes from the konjac plant. Its a soluble dietary fiber. According to the National Institutes of Health, it absorbs water in the gut to make you feel full but theres little evidence that it directly aids in weight loss. However, it may help stabilize blood sugar levels, which can be helpful when dieting. Possible side effects: diarrhea, flatulence, bloating, abdominal discomfort.

Green Tea Extract may help curb appetite and raise calorie and fat metabolism. Possible side effects: High doses could cause nausea, bloating, gas, diarrhea, dizziness, insomnia, agitation.

Holly Hagan weight loss: How the SVELTE reality TV star transformed her body – Express.co.uk

Posted: March 26, 2017 at 12:42 pm

The 24-year-old reality star has dropped four dress sizes turned her life around in the process.

Holly Hagan first appeared on MTV show Geordie Shore in 2011.

But today she looks radically different, after shedding the pounds over the past few years.

The reality star admits she used to have a poor junk diet, filled with booze, soft drink and fatty foods, which saw her five-foot-three frame swell to 13 stone.

But one morning Holly saw an unflattering photo of herself from a night out and it became her turning point.

Having tried and failed with quick fixes in the past, like body shrinking wraps, fad diets and even a liposuction consultation, Holly decided to do it the hard way.

She started working out with a personal trainer and gave her diet a complete overhaul, ditching coke and crisps for a clean meal plan.

Holly also educated herself on diet and fitness, which she credits for maintaining her ideal weight.

Former Emmerdale star, Lisa Riley, shed an incredible 10 stone in less than a year having given up alcohol in 2015

Since her own weight loss transformation - which saw her shrink from a size 16 to a svelte size eight - the TV star has created the Holly Hagan Bible, a 12-week program to inspire others.

She has also shared a series of mind-blowing before and after pictures on her Instagram, which reveal the extent of her changing shape.

But Holly admits her job on camera makes her weight fluctuate.

She said: My life is so busy and I travel around a hell of a lot, so sometimes its hard to stay on track but on those off days when I slack and give into temptation, I look back on pictures like these to get myself motivated.

Mother’s Day: Pregnant ‘fat English girl’ Sarah Woodside on facing motherhood without her mum – Cornwall Live

Posted: March 26, 2017 at 12:40 pm

2016 was a year of tremendous highs and tremendous lows, a year that should be remembered for all the highs will forever be remembered as the year I lost my mum, writes Sarah Woodside, sharing her 'diary of a fat English girl' blog with Cornwall Live for Mother's Day.

I walked in to my first Slimming World meeting on May 2, 2016, and five months later as I prepared for a holiday of a life time I was six stone lighter and I couldn't have been prouder.

Many people asked me along the way what my motivation was and I told them, "it's finally clicked", "I want this for me", and whilst that wasn't a lie, it also wasn't the full truth.

Read more: Here's how parents can register for an extra 2,000 tax-free childcare

Sarah Woodside has charted her battle with weight loss through her blog, Diary of a Fat English Girl.

Everyone always says do it for yourself, you have to want it. I always wanted it but the truth is I never loved myself enough to really believe I could do it, to really fight for it and make the change for good. I did however love my mum enough. So from the day I walked in I did it for her.

My mum was diagnosed with the cruel illness that is Motor Neurone Disease and as her health deteriorated I didn't want to be the burden I had always been. I wanted her full focus to be on herself to keep strong and keep fighting in spite of there being no cure. I didn't want her final moments being spent in tears worrying whether I'd be alive to celebrate my thirtieth birthday.

Each week I climbed those scales with hope, for 22 weeks straight I lost weight, I relished leaving group and dialling my mum's number and telling her how I'd got on. Was it easy? No. I wanted to eat my feelings most weeks, the side of the story that you didn't see was the struggle and reality of my mum's health and how this really impacted me and my journey.

She always was a proud woman, she barely told her own friends and our extended family the extent of her illness, she certainly didn't want me telling the world.

If she's reading this now I hope she forgives me for finally sharing her story. From her diagnosis to her untimely death I watched my beautiful proud courageous mother become a shell of the woman she was.

She was trapped in a body that no longer wanted to work for her. Each time I visited my mum she had deteriorated. We all put on a brave face determined to be strong for her.

But I wasn't strong, she would see me smile and tell her that she had better stick around because we were going to find a cure, I would be the positive person she needed.

Read more: Mum thanks the team that saved her baby after he stopped breathing and turned blue

I'd hug her as she cried and I would tell her how much I loved her. Then I would leave and go home to my partner, spend evenings crying on him only to retire to bed and cry myself to sleep, this beautiful woman that I had spent so many years loving was slowly leaving me.

I didn't have control over my mum's illness, I couldn't make her walk again, I couldn't make her speak again, I couldn't take away her pain or make it easier for her, but I could make her proud. So I thrived on the control I had over my weight loss and made every day count.

Then something changed, I found out I was pregnant and what a shock that was. I was overjoyed but equally so scared. How could I continue to lose weight and make my mum proud whilst safely growing a baby? How could I tell my mum that I was having a baby when none of us knew if she would still be here to see that same baby be born?

Don't get me wrong, the plan had always been to lose weight and to have children. But I wasn't done yet. I'd finally cracked this weight loss and now a new little life was forming that was going to change everything.

So many people spend so long trying to have children and I would never want to seem ungrateful, but this little one was a big surprise, albeit a very welcome one and it took a while for it to sink in.

I'm 26 + 3 weeks now and I still find it hard to believe that my very own baby is growing away inside of me.

I plucked up the courage to tell my mum a few days after we found out, it was way before 12 weeks, and the time people usually wait, but I knew I wanted her to know from the start.

I was so scared. I didn't want my mum to think that I was carrying on with my life like normal when she struggled every moment of the day. My mum's partner tells me that learning that I was pregnant gave her a new sense of fight and happiness right when she needed it, this brings me comfort even now.

So now my mum knew I could focus back on Slimming World, let's face it I was (and still am) a long way from target so all the midwives were ecstatic that I was hoping to continue to lose weight, safely and healthily and so was my mum. She wanted me to keep going, so I did.

Sarah takes a pregnant selfie.

In the first 6 weeks of my pregnancy I continued to lose weight and then I went on holiday and ever since then it's been a struggle.

Just prior to holiday my mum had moved into a hospice, it was only ever meant to be a temporary stay in order to get her pain management under control, she didn't want to go in, and she was so scared.

I can still see the fear in her eyes now, she was convinced that she wouldn't make it home again, we all told her that of course she would, looking back that seems cruel, but it was the truth, we truly believed she would come home again.

Before I jetted off I was filled with emotion, I felt so guilty about leaving for a holiday when my mum needed me. But ever the stubborn woman she told me not to be silly, to go and have an amazing time and that she would be waiting for my return to hear all about our adventures. It also brought her much amusement knowing that I'd lost all this weight to finally feel comfortable going on all of the rollercoasters only to discover I was pregnant so I couldn't go on any!

The holiday was amazing and it was topped off with my handsome man proposing in front of my favourite place, Hogwarts Castle. What a lot of people don't know is that almost every day I woke up crying, I was in this amazing place, having an incredible time, but something just didn't feel right.

I was convinced that I would arrive home and my mum would no longer be here. Things couldn't be going this well. We're having a baby, we're engaged something has to happen. And then it did.

We flew back on the Sunday, and from the airport I went straight to the hospice and I didn't leave again until Thursday. I had left my mum confident that she was in the right place and that she was well enough for me to go, nothing could have prepared me for what happened.

In the week I was away, my mum contracted a chest infection, which developed into pneumonia and then began to shut her lung downs. No one could have prepared us for that, no one saw it coming.

By the time I returned home on cloud nine after my proposal and eager to tell my mum all about it, she had already begun to slip away.

Four days after I returned from holiday, my beautiful mum passed away surrounded by those who loved her.

One of the very first things I said was, "how am I going to do this without her?" and even now I don't know the answer.

I had gone from the happiest girl on the planet to the most desperate and sad. It doesn't get any easier. The past few months have been a blur and my weight loss has suffered along with it.

A lot of people tell me to enjoy my pregnancy and worry about weight afterwards but I want to make my mum proud, I need to keep doing this for her. But she was my main reason, who do I call now each week? Who am I fighting for?

The answer has to be me and this innocent little boy whose due date is fast approaching.

The past few months have been filled with every emotion possible and each day is a struggle to make the right choice.

If you had asked me six months ago where I'd be by now, I would have told you confidently that I'd be approaching my target. But the reality is I'm further away from it than I was a few months ago.

People always say "sometimes life gets in the way" and if I'm honest 90 per cent of the time I just thought that was an elaborate excuse, now I see how wrong I was.

Weight loss isn't one straight line, it's a road filled with speed bumps, sharp turns, and u turns, you go back on yourself, and you go in the wrong direction just as much as you go in the right direction.

I may not be closing in on my target but I will get there, my beautiful mum will be watching over me the day I receive my shiny target sticker, and I will have done it all with a pregnancy and baby thrown in the middle and having faced my hardest moment to date. Losing my hero.

If I am half the mother she was then I will be doing alright.

This post is dedicated to my beautiful, brave and courageous mummy. Who had so much love to give and life left to live but was cruelly taken away too soon.

If anyone wishes to donate to find a cure for the horrible disease, please do so here [ https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Tanya-Harrison4?utm_id=13 ] and show your support to my fantastic cousin who is running the London Marathon this year for her favourite Aunty, my mum.

After a dinner out with her family where the staff struggled to find a seat that she would fit into, Jennifer Butters knew she needed to lose weight. At the time, the 5-foot-5-inch woman weighed 410 pounds.

After three and a half years of hard work, she dropped a total of 275 pounds.

"The most difficult part for losing the weight was in admitting to myself that I was out of control with my emotional eating and that if I didn't stop, I was likely going to die from the damage it was causing," Butters, 53, of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, told TODAY via email.

RELATED: Joy Fit Club: Mom, 51, reveals dramatic 275-lb. weight loss on TODAY

Like so many women, she put on weight during her three pregnancies and failed to lose it. That, combined with a love of baked goods and comfort food, meant Butters weight increased dramatically before she realized that if she didn't change her habits, her high cholesterol and pre-diabetes would become bigger problems.

Ive learned that whenever we live in an unbalanced way our lives cant be truly healthy or happy, she said.

For the past three years, shes maintained her weight loss thanks to a focus on mindful eating.

I hope that people know what seems impossible is possible with God and no matter what our stories have been in the past, we can write a happier ending, she said.

Butters shared her advice for losing and maintaining weight loss.

Following a simple diet and exercise regimen, Jennifer Butters lost 275 pounds in a little over three years.

RELATED: How this man shed 374 pounds, more than half his body weight

Before losing 275 pounds, Butters tried and failed to lose weight many times. People told her shed never lose weight and keep it off. But she started anyway.

Dont let any excuses get in your way, she said. "Choose a healthy, balanced weight-loss plan and surround yourself with as much support, encouragement and inspiration."

Butters keeps a food journal it helps her make smart food choices and count calories. She also walks and bikes for exercise instead of going to the gym. These changes make sense with her life, so adding them feels easy.

I focus on keeping balance, she said.

Vegetables, fruits, lean meats, low-fat dairy and whole grains make up the bulk of Butters diet. She buys them and stays away from the center of the grocery store, often where processed foods, snacks and sugary beverages are.

I basically stick to eating foods found in the perimeter of the grocery store, she said.

Jennifer Butters changed her lifestyle with a few simple tweaks.

RELATED: Weight-loss success: 6 Joy Fit members who have lost over 100 pounds

While Butters worked hard to lose weight, it did not feel as difficult as being overweight. Feeling exhausted from doing the smallest task or being humiliated when she couldn't fit somewhere took more energy than eating healthfully and exercising.

Being morbidly obese is harder. Choose your hard. I choose living healthy, she said. "Staying healthy and keeping the weight off 'tastes' much better than any kind of food."

For birthdays, anniversaries or holidays, Butters enjoys foods that arent part of her eating plan. But she doesnt worry about over-indulging.

It feels so much better to be at a healthy weight and to be free of all the emotional baggage I carried around that I dont completely enjoy eating off plan for very long. After a day or so off, I am ready to get back on, she said.

Butters gained a lot of weight by simply not paying attention. Shed binge on food without thinking about it. But those habits make living a healthy life almost impossible.

Continue focusing on healthy, balanced eating and living. Dont think you can go back to mindless eating and careless living again and stay at a healthy weight and lifestyle. Its not possible, she said.

Too often, we view our struggles as proof that were weak and this leads us to more and more negative thoughts and doubts, she said. But I have learned that the struggles we go through are proof that we have not given up.

Finally, a weight-loss program that’s ‘Ideal for me – Marysville Globe

Posted: March 25, 2017 at 10:47 am

LAKEWOOD Seems like almost everyone, especially after the holidays, wants to lose weight.

I cant tell you the number of times thats been my New Years Resolution.

I have tried about every diet possible: Atkins, Nutrasystems, Weight Watchers, etc. Thanks to being held accountable by Julie Muhlstein at The Herald, when I worked there a dozen years ago, Weight Watchers worked the best for me.

Until now.

At the Marysville-Tulalip Chamber of Commerce Dinner and Auction in December, I was the high bidder on an item offered by Emily Countryman of Ideal Wellness in Lakewood. I had done a story on that program a few years ago and decided to give it a try.

My first appointment there I told her my wife had done the 30-10 weight loss program. Emily told me the founders of 30-10 were part of Ideal Wellness but broke off and started their own business. They both are protein and vegetable diets, with no sweets or carbohydrates. Supplements make sure clients get the vitamins they need.

What makes Ideal Wellness better than the highly advertised 30-10 weight loss program, in my mind, is not only the lower cost but the lifetime of coaching. Once I reach my goal weight I no longer have to buy their scientifically balanced food products, which cost $99 a week. They will put me on a plan of eating regular foods to sustain my weight. By the way, Ive lost 27 pounds in six weeks, and eight total inches. My wife joined this week.

Once I reach my new goal, I will continue to go in to be weighed once a month. If I gain five pounds, I told them I will go back on the weight-loss program. That way, I should never weight more than five pounds above my goal weight the rest of my life.

That has been a huge problem for me in the past. Im a yo-yo dieter. Id lose the weight but gain it back. Also, to help me for the rest of my life, Ideal Wellness coaches will be there to encourage me. Often times I will hit a goal, then stay there. Then get discouraged and start gaining. With a life coach, they can help push me through that wall.

The program is working much faster than I thought it would. I lost 16 pounds in the first two weeks, and 6 inches. Belly fat always has been hard for me to lose, but I lost 3 inches there and already am back into jeans I havent worn for years. My Body Mass Index is dropping fast, too.

Ill admit the food, and the amount you eat, isnt like going to a 4-star restaurant. But it does the job. And it works so well its easy to stay on. But I sure look forward to dinners when I can have up to 8 ounces of lean meat and four cups of vegetables. Its real food.

If you have a sweet tooth, Ideal Wellness has dessert products available as snacks that can solve that problem. There also are salty snacks, such as soy nuts, that I like.

I particularly enjoy the omelette, oatmeal and pancake mixes for breakfast and the soup mixes for lunch.

Im not the only one who has done well on this diet. Many of the counselors who work there have lost dozens of pounds using Ideal Wellness. There are pictures all over the walls of before and after shots of clients. And Ive included mine in this story, even though I plan to keep going.

Lena Dunham Is Facing Major Backlash For Losing Weight – Bravo (blog)

Posted: March 25, 2017 at 10:47 am

When Lena Dunham lost weight, the world took notice. We wrote about it, too! Lena wasn't deaf to the buzz, and even posted a funny-but-not-really outline of her accidental diet, which really stemmed from having a diminished appetite after the election.

But, the star has been a bit more serious lately about all the opinions regarding her body. (It is, after all, hers and no one else's.) After Refinery29 put out a thoughtful piece reminding us that Lena Dunham's weight loss is not really none of our beezwax, the actress posted a passionate response.

"Right now I'm struggling to control my endometriosis through a healthy diet and exercise," her statement read in part. "So my weight loss isn't a triumph and it also isn't some sign I've finally given in to the voices of trolls. Because my body belongs to ME."

Speaking of trolls, Lena opened up about them on Ellen earlier this week. When Ellen brought up the fact that Lena "got a lot of flack for losing weight, which is ridiculous," Lena readily agreed.

"It's just so ridiculous because I spent six years being called 'bag of milk' on the Internet," she said. Then, when she lost weight, Lena saw comments such as: "I thought you were body positive!" The most frustrating part of it all? "It's evidence that as a woman in Hollywood, you just can't win," Lena said. Watch the whole clip here
