When Kimberly Dos Santos found out that she was pre-menopausal, her desire to take better care of her body through natural remedies would set her on the path of becoming a nutritionist.

Generally, you should try your best to avoid fast foods, and foods high in trans-fat and sugar. One way to avoid such foods is to read your labels when you go grocery shopping. It can be time-consuming but it is worth it! said Kimberly.
A healthy diet does not only impact our physical health, but our mental health too. When we consume healthy foods, we are reducing our chances of diseases.
For those who prioritise weight loss, she aims to ensure that they understand that working out regularly will not cause one to accomplish their body goals or weight as there are various things that need to be taken into consideration.
On top of the list is poor dietary practices. People often associate working out hard and burning a lot of calories on the treadmill with major body transformation. Lest we forget the 80/20 rule; 80 per cent diet 20 per cent exercise. The key to body transformation is what nutrition coaches call CICO - calories in calories out. For people trying to lose weight that would mean the calories they put into their bodies should be less than what they expend during a workout. A person trying to transform their body while working out should incorporate more low caloric, highly nutritious foods in their day to day routine to reap the benefits.
A major component she believes is often overlooked when persons are going on a weight loss journey, is the need for a support system. Many people would start a weight loss journey and fall off in a quick time and in most cases its due to lack of support from friends and family. In my personal weight loss journey, I was faced with outside noises, with people asking me why I was punishing myself with certain types of food and encouraging me to eat more.
Some would even turn up their faces at my meals. Thankfully, I was highly self motivated, I knew what I wanted and I believed in myself. Unfortunately not everyone has the ability to stay motivated on their own and thats when the support from friends and family matters. So before you go on a journey you should do what is called a mindset check. Are you mentally ready to battle on your own?
For those who might be more interested in bulking up their muscles rather than losing weight, she advised consumption of a lot of protein at every meal.
Protein helps in muscle building and repair. Drink a lot of water, eat carbs after workouts, strength train and consistently increase your weights. These are just a few of the things anyone trying to build muscle can incorporate in their daily routine. Muscle growth demands consistency and your time. The workouts are not cardio-based and most times they are muscle group focused.
Meaning you work a different body part per day. Anyone trying to take up this journey should be mentally and physically prepared for it otherwise they might end up relapsing. Time and consistency are important points that one needs to consider when trying to lose weight or gain muscle. It seems that everyone wants to put the pedal to the metal in life, and the need for speed doesn't yield when it comes to weight loss. We want to see results quickly. And yet, the pace at which we drop pounds seems to slow down as we get older. Or does it?
The commonly held notion that metabolism slows as we age was called into question last year in a study in the journal Science. Researchers from Duke University found that metabolism stays mostly stable throughout life, declining about 3% per year until about age 20 and then plateauing until around age 60, when it declines again at the rate of about 1% a year.
The study surprised many who accepted the historical convention that changes in metabolism due to aging contributed to weight gain. Nevertheless, it's likely your lifestyle that is affecting your ability to slim down. So let's review some key eating habits that dietitians say can accelerate weight loss as you age.
Don't get sucked in by the claims of every new or old diet plan you see.
"Most diets are restrictive, challenging to follow, and are unrealistic to keep up with long-term," warns Sandy Younan Brikho, RDN, owner of The Dish On Nutrition. "If you love what you are eating, and if you are losing weight in the process, then you will not only lose weight, but also keep it off!"
Instead of a diet of subtraction, Brikho recommends adding in certain foods that can help with speedier weight loss.

It's a simple behavioral trick that'll reap big benefits over time. Brikho says getting into the habit of always covering half of your dinner plate in vegetableshelps increase your fullness, prevent overeating, and help you get the nutrients you need.
"Do this and you won't need to double the portion of pasta and meatballs in order to feel full," she says. "You'll lose weight over time by automatically cutting down on eating too many other higher-calorie foods."
Even if your metabolism hasn't decreased, you may be burning fewer calories because you're not as active every day as you once were or maybe you're not getting adequate sleep. If, for whatever reason, your calorie burn is not what it once was and you haven't reduced your calorie consumption proportionally, you'll gain weight.
Avoid that scenario and lose weight by reducing the size of your meal portions, suggests Jesse Feder, RDN at Strength Warehouse USA.
"You don't have to change what you eat, just the amount," says Feder. "In today's culture, we tend to eat until we can't breathe anymore. I always tell my clients to stop eating when they feel content."
Tip: Put down your utensils and take a sip of water between bites.
"By doing this, we can actually begin to regulate the hormones that make us feel satiated more easily," Feder says.

"Protein is the most satiating macronutrient and will stall weight gain by preventing overeating excess calories," she says.
There's another important reason to eat more protein: protein helps build and maintain muscle mass which tends to decrease with age.
"Muscle burns more calories than fat and is one of the only ways you can increase your metabolism," Tomaschko says.

There's a clear connection between drinking alcohol and sugar-sweetened soft drinks and metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease, says Feder.
In other words, choose more complex carbohydrates like beans, quinoa, 100% whole grain bread, and steel-cut oatmeal. Complex carbs are rich in fiber, which helps us stay feeling full longer, so we snack less between meals, says Laura Krauza, RDN, owner of Waistline Dietitian. Dietitians recommend that women shoot for eating about 25 grams of fiber per day while men should reach 38 grams.
Some of the best sources of fiber per serving, besides those above, include raspberries (8 grams), split peas (16 grams), bran cereal (5.5 grams), lentils (15.5 grams), black beans (15 grams), and air-popped popcorn (3.5 grams).

Geneva senior Curtis Denison has battled back from two ACL tears and lost 70 pounds along the way – Finger Lakes Times

GENEVA Curtis Denison and the Geneva Panthers walked off the field June 1, 2019, after an 8-6 loss to East Aurora in the New York state Class C boys lacrosse quarterfinals. It was a hard-fought game in which Denison accounted for two goals. Despite the setback, the freshman had plenty to hang is helmet on, as he finished his first year on varsity with 30 goals and 39 points, a Finger Lakes league title, a Section V Class C crown and enough potential to turn the heads of the top college lacrosse programs in the nation.
Little did Denison know an unimaginable storm of woes awaited so much so that 1,019 days passed before he stepped on a lacrosse field for Geneva again. A left-leg ACL tear, a pandemic-canceled season, a right-leg ACL tear and a 70-pound weight loss comprise the odyssey Denison traveled in between.
There were a lot of downs and ups, Denison said Thursday after the Panthers routed Gananda 20-5. I really want to thank the people out at BrownStone Physical Therapy, specifically Matthew Kearns, who was by my side ever since my freshman year. Hes been by my side since day one.
In the summer of 2019, while at a club lacrosse tournament in Maryland, Denison pivoted wrong on his left leg and heard a pop followed by excruciating pain.
A long and arduous rehab followed; Denison was able to take the field in the summer of 2020 for his club team, Sweet Lax. That was after the spring 2020 season was canceled due to the pandemic, although Denisons left knee would not have been quite ready for that season.
When winter took hold of the Finger Lakes, he traded in cleats for basketball shoes, as he normally did. In Genevas first game of the covid-shortened 2021 basketball season against Newark, Denison felt another pop. This time it was in his right knee, though it was not the same as before.
I was almost positive that I didnt tear my ACL, Denison said. I felt a little pop but it wasnt the excruciating pain that I felt when I first did it. I never thought it was my ACL at all.
It was and the process of surgery and rehabilitation began all over again.
I was pretty down. I just wanted to be left alone, with just my family, Denison said. Matt Kearns, my friends, my coaches; they just all gave me words of encouragement that its not going to stop me and Ill be back. I think all the support has gotten me through it. It really helped.
With his second ACL tear in under two years, Denison felt it was time for a lifestyle change. At 6-foot-5 and nearly 300 pounds, Denison needed to do all he could to strengthen his knees and ensure that another catastrophic injury was avoided.
A little bit after the second tear I looked at myself and said, I need to get in shape if I ever want to play at the collegiate level, and if I want to prevent these injuries from happening, I need to start losing weight, Denison said. So I started, and ever since then Ive been losing weight Im feeling a lot better, faster and healthier.
Once it was time for Denison to get rehabbing and moving again, everything changed. He made smarter food choices, and dedicated himself to losing weight, all while rehabbing his second ACL surgery.
It was a pretty easy rehab for me because I said, Do this, and he did it and then some, Kearns said. Ive rehabbed certainly over 100 ACLs in my career, and he is in the top five of the strongest (athletes) going back to the field that Ive ever done.
Fast-forward to 2022. Denison remains 6-5, but he is now a lean, mean lacrosse machine with roughly 70 fewer pounds on his frame.
Nutrition was the key, Denison emphasized. After I started rehabbing I was able to start running again, and thats when I was like, Its full go. Lets make it happen, Im going to lose all this weight.
I feel so much better, he continued. Im faster, lighter on my feet; I dont even know how to explain it. Its just amazing.
Now at 220 pounds, Denison plans to shed 5-10 more pounds and then switch the script and begin adding muscle.
The repaired and strengthened ACLs, the strength gained, and the weight lost still doesnt equal the mental fortitude Denison cultivated the previous three years.
Its setting up a bright future, Denison said. Anything that life throws at me, I think I can now overcome it. Having the two injuries and being out for 9-12 months (each time), not being able to do what you love, it hurts a little bit. For the future, whatever life throws at me, I think Ill be able to overcome it. I think thats a positive thing to live by.
Last Saturday, Denison took the field at Canandaigua Academy wearing Geneva red for the first time since June 1, 2019. He did exactly what he did 1,019 days earlier: scored two goals. Only this time, Denison wasnt just a threat from the left side; he was a threat everywhere, even in the defensive zone for a period of time in the third quarter.
With a leg brace strapped on his right leg, Denison proved to be the most dominant player on the field that day. Though the Panthers lost to the Braves 10-2, Canandaiguas double- and triple-team efforts struggled to contain the senior who absorbed contact and steamrolled several defenders.
Even in defeat, the smile on Denisons face after the game said it all.
Denison has piled up 10 goals and five assists in his first three outings. He has committed to play NCAA Division II lacrosse at Roberts Wesleyan University, where former Panthers longpole Parker Bossard now plays and where Denisons classmate, starting goalie Garrett Kayser, will play college lacrosse too.

A large 2016 review echoed this finding, with researchers concluding that weight and fat loss seem to increase the vitamin D levels of people who used to have obesity.
Studies also suggest that vitamin D levels climb higher as people lose more weight. In a 2011 study, researchers found that people who lost 15 percent or more of their body weight experienced vitamin D increases 3 times greater than those who lost 5 to 10 percent of their body weight.
On the other hand, a 2014 study suggests that boosting vitamin D levels in the blood might help reduce body fat and encourage weight loss. So this may be a bit of a chicken-or-egg situation.
So now we know that weight loss = higher vitamin D levels. In true mathematical fashion, it seems the reverse is also true. Heres the research breakdown:
Some research from 2008 notes that vitamin D could potentially suppress the formation of new fat cells in the body. Additional 2016 research supports this finding, showing that vitamin D also seems to suppress the storage of fat cells, which basically makes it hard for fat to form in your body in the first place.
Vitamin D also boosts levels of serotonin (the feel-good hormone), which might play a part in appetite control and increase feelings of fullness after eating. Naturally, this could decrease your calorie intake and, likewise, your body weight.
According to the National Institutes of Health, adults need at least 600 IU (15 mcg) of vitamin D each day.
Still, its not exactly a one-size-fits-all situation, since a decent amount of research suggests the ideal dosage should be based on body weight.
Researchers in a 2012 study adjusted vitamin D levels for body size, calculating that 32 to 36 IU per pound (70 to 80 IU per kilogram) is needed to maintain adequate blood levels.
So, depending on your body weight, this level could be much higher than the current standard upper limit of 4,000 IU per day. Doses of up to 10,000 IU have also been reported without any observed negative effects.
Keep in mind that vitamin D can still cause toxicity when consumed in large amounts, so its a good idea to talk with a healthcare professional before taking more than the upper limit of 4,000 IU per day.
