Antonio Silva is on a troubling career trajectory, and there’s no one who can stop him – MMAjunkie.com

Posted: August 22, 2017 at 9:48 pm

Heres what Antonio Silvas career looks like over the past two years: Win (TKO), loss (TKO), loss (KO), loss (KO), loss (decision), loss (KO).

Hes been stopped by strikes in seven of his past 10 bouts. He has just two victories since 2012 one over Soa Palelei, and one over Alistair Overeem, who was beating him soundly until a sudden third-round comeback by Silva.

If you do some combat sports math on the 37-year-old Bigfoot, what you see is a fighter on a dangerous trajectory. That path took him out of the UFC and into two fights for smaller Russian promotions, both of which he lost. His last knockout loss was two months ago.

So why did Silva (19-12-1 MMA)just sign on for a kickboxing bout against GLORY heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven (51-10-1 kickboxing)in China this October?

Obviously, its not a good fight for Bigfoot, Silvas longtime manager Alex Davis told MMAjunkie. Jumping right into (GLORY) to go against the current champ, whos a murderer? Yeah, we get it.

But Silvas doing it anyway, and for reasons that are as old as the fight game.

For one, he thinks he can win. According to Davis, Bigfoot is back on testosterone-replacement therapy, which he used somewhat controversially for a time in the UFC, before the practice was effectively banned.

Now, fighting in places like Russia and China, and for organizations whose anti-doping policies are notably less stringent, hes free to resume the use of synthetic testosterone, which makes a huge difference for him, Davis said.

And also he needs money, Davis said. He cant turn down fights at the moment for that reason. If it was up to me, he would not take this fight. But at the end of the day, my job is to inform him, give him my advice, and the one who has to make the final decision is him.

Here we get into a persistent problem for fighters and fight sports. No one can tell Silva to stop. They can suggest and argue and recommend. Promoters can cut him and trainers could refuse to train him. Even Davis, a longtime friend, could stop managing him.

But as long as Silva can find someone willing to pay for his name and his willingness to walk face-first into someone elses fists, he gets to keep going.

It was the same with Gary Goodridge, another MMA fighter who turned to kickboxing later in his career. He lost about twice as many kickboxing bouts as he won, but his appeal for promoters was that, when you booked Big Daddy, you knew someone would get knocked out even if the someone was usually him.

For Goodridge, those years of damage contributed to brain trauma that eventually left him unable to remember conversations moments after theyd ended. By the evening, he couldnt tell you what hed done during the afternoon.

But Goodridge also needed the money. Even when he knew he shouldnt fight anymore, he was a man in his forties with no real work history outside of cages and rings. What else was he supposed to do?

According to Davis, Silvas brain health has been closely monitored with testing done at the Cleveland Clinics Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas.

Physically, Bigfoot has no problems whatsoever, Davis said. He has no brain damage. Weve done extensive research and testing, even before he left the UFC. So hes OK on that end.

But then, some signs of degenerative brain diseases like CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), which researchers have found in the brains of deceased fighters and football players, are sometimes not apparent until years after the actual trauma.

And clearly, Silva is doing himself no favors. He went less than five months between knockout losses in 2016. Youd have to go back to 2010 to find a single calendar year in which he didnt suffer at least one knockout.

This fight against Verhoeven doesnt promise to be any easier on his brain. Verhoeven is younger, faster, and riding a winning streak thats about as good as Silvas losing streak is bad. If anything, the kickboxing rules will likely only lead to Silva absorbing more punishment than he would in an MMA bout. And then what?

Soon the paycheck will be spent and Silva will face the same questions about his future that he faces now. So far, he only seems to know one answer.

Ill be very sincere and tell you, I cant defend a man from himself, Davis said. If he fights and doesnt manage his money, hell go looking for the next fight. This is a very common problem with many fighters, not just Bigfoot. Thats what creates situations like Gary Goodridge.

As for Goodridge, he also had people telling him he should stop. Then he had people telling him that there was something troubling happening to him. The damage sneaks up on you, he said later. When he finally realized the full extent of it, it was too late to stop it.

I had no idea it was coming, Goodridge said in 2012. You dont know. Everyone around you tells you its happening, but you dont notice it yourself.

Delayed Ejaculation and Associated Complaints: Relationship to Ejaculation Times and Serum Testosterone Levels. – UroToday

Posted: August 22, 2017 at 6:45 am

Although delayed ejaculation (DE) is typically characterized as a persistently longer than anticipated or desired time to ejaculation (or orgasm) during sexual activity, a timing-based definition of DE and its association with serum testosterone has not been established in a large cohort.

To examine in an observational study estimated intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) and masturbatory ejaculation latency time (MELT) in men self-reporting DE, assess the association of IELT and MELT withserum testosterone levels, and determine whether correlation with demographic and sexual parameters exist.

Men who resided in the United States, Canada, and Mexico were enrolled from 2011 to 2013. Self-estimated IELT and MELT were captured using an Ejaculatory Function Screening Questionnaire in a sample of 988 men screened for possible inclusion in a randomized clinical trial assessing testosterone replacement therapy for ejaculatory dysfunction (EjD) and who self-reported the presence or absence of DE and symptoms of hypogonadism. Additional comorbid EjDs (ie, anejaculation, perceived decrease in ejaculate volume, and decreased force of ejaculation) were recorded. Men with premature ejaculation were excluded from this analysis. IELT and MELT were compared between men self-reporting DE and men without DE. The associations of IELT and MELT with serum testosterone were measured.

IELT, MELT, and total testosterone levels.

Sixty-two percent of screened men self-reported DE with or without comorbid EjDs; 38% did not report DE but did report at least one of the other EjDs. Estimated median IELTs were 20.0 minutes for DE vs 15 minutes for no DE (P < .001). Estimated median MELTs were 15.0 minutes for DE vs 8.0 minutes for no DE (P < .001). Ejaculation time was not associated with serum testosterone levels. Younger men and those with less severe erectile dysfunction had longer IELTs and MELTs.

Estimated ejaculation times during vaginal intercourse and/or masturbation were not associated with serum testosterone levels in this study; thus, routine androgen evaluation is not indicated in these men.

This large systematic analysis attempted to objectively assess the ejaculation latency in men with self-reported DE. Limitations were that ejaculation time estimates were self-reported and were queried only once; the questionnaire did not distinguish between failure to achieve orgasm and ejaculation; and assessment of DE was limited to heterosexual vaginal intercourse and masturbation.

IELT and MELT were longer in men with DE, and there was no association of ejaculation times with serum testosterone levels in this study population. Morgentaler A, Polzer P, Althof S, etal. ‘Balls in Danger’: Why testosterone is very important to men’s health … – GhanaWeb

Lowering testosterone in men is one of the real main causes of prostate cancer

Hormone treatment for prostate cancer is an example of the medical industry with blinders on! The premise is that testosterone is the cause of prostate cancer and this was evident in the JOY FM Balls in Danger documentary. In my previous article, I provided evidence that there is absolutely no science in castrating men to stop prostate cancer or as part of the crusade against prostate cancer.

The documentary with castration as the yardstick is to misinform the public that Testosterone is our enemy as men and therefore it is not needed. In this article I am writing as I promised you earlier on the importance of Testosterone for Mens Health.

The Urological Doctors castrating men is so ridiculous. If that were the case then how could we have survived as a species? Testosterone is natural for men. And the ideal is to maintain healthy levels as we age. But doctors claim the opposite! And their hormone therapy for prostate cancer seeks to reduce testosterone levels as much as possible!

Low testosterone levels (not high ones) combined with high estrogen levels are the real underlying conditions that cause prostate disease.

This insanity started more than eighty years ago, even before Huggins got the brilliant idea to castrate men to cure their prostate cancer! Eunuchs (castrates) had less developed sexual organs and smaller prostates, so this must have seemed like a good idea at the time. The victims seemed to get better temporarily, but the cancer soon returned with a vengeance, and they quickly died.

So anyone who thinks you cure cancer by cutting off a mans testicles is obviously wrong in the first place. This butchery has continued to the present day, and now doctors use both chemicals and scalpels to castrate men. There are over seventy-four (74) published studies in this chapter to prove empirically that testosterone is prostate healthy. Every year more such studies are published, yet doctors still physically and chemically castrate men to reduce their levels to zero.

Even one of the top Urologists in field has debunked this claim: Dr. Abraham Morgentaler at the Harvard Medical School; an urological surgeon.

Let's look at this logically. Testosterone is what makes us men. Lowering it is one of the real main "causes" of prostate cancer.

Of course, it is what triggers this loss of testosterone while at the same time increasing estrogen to dangerous levels that we must learn about.

You may not even realize that we consume so many foods laced with chemicals that our bodies are fighting to survive. There are hormone disruptors in the typical mainstream western diet: pesticides, herbicides and fungicides of non-organic food; chemicals that are leached into food and water from plastic bottles and food can linings; and, all the way to the cleaners you use in your house and the non-stick surfaces in your pots and pans.

These toxins in our food supply and environment are what we need to pay attention to. The result is a lowering of testosterone in men coupled with a drastic rise of estrogens resulting in cancers.

The solution is to stop the onslaught of the toxins by modifying the diet and to cleanse in order to remove the toxins. Then, if needed, supplement with natural testosterone after first testing your hormones with a simple saliva test kit.

But are you aware that men suffer from low testosterone because of many reasons? Just like estrogen in females, testosterone can determine a mans mood to a large extent and a low testosterone level can affect the mental and emotional health of a man negatively.

No Doctor currently has been able to prove in any scientific journal that testosterone triggers prostate cancer and therefore regressing it will cure the cancer by castrating men using the knives or drugs. Lets get some knowledge on testosterones as men. Testosterone is our friend and not our enemy.

The testosterone definition plays a very critical role when determining the health and sexual well-being of men. Research has shown that testosterone or the lack of it can have detrimental effects on a mans body. It is important to know what testosterone is and how it is defined before delving into its effects on the human body.

To define testosterone, in mammals, testosterone can be said to be the chief sex hormone secreted by the testes in males and by the ovaries in females. Adrenal glands also secrete small amounts of testosterone. So if you taking off the testicles then take off the adrenal glands and ultimately do away with the kidneys also as they sit just above the kidneys.

At times it is also used as an anabolic steroid. The testosterone definition in men plays an imperative part in the process of development and growth of reproductive system tissues such as the prostate and testis.

Testosterone also plays a very critical role in giving rise to secondary sexual characteristics like increasing bone mass and muscle mass. It also brings forth body hair growth. Studies have shown that testosterone is important to keep away osteoporosis. Testosterone levels peak to about 7-8 times greater in males as compared to females on an average, but the daily levels are about 20 times higher.

Testosterone Effects on the Prostate and Sexual Health

It was popularly believed for a long time that testosterone aided the growth of prostate growth and sped up the growth of cells that would normally grow slowly. So by providing testosterone to an individual diagnosed with prostate cancer, it was akin to adding fuel to fire.

Sadly, this prompted many individuals to undergo Hormone Replacement Therapy because of the reported link between the two. The reasoning behind this was that since prostate cancer required testosterone to grow, replacement therapy would stall its growth and prevent it from spreading.

Hormone Replacement Therapy for testosterone is weak as there have been studies that have defeated such a link between the two. The link between them is false as research has shown that there is a direct link between testosterone and the risk of death.

The study revealed that low testosterone levels are a significant risk factor for men over 40. The results of the study concluded that men with significantly low levels of testosterone had 88% higher risk of death compared to those with normal levels.

Low testosterone levels have been linked with a decline in sex drive and libido. Therefor decreased sex drive and problems such as erectile dysfunction are probable signs of low testosterone levels.

The Work of Testosterone

Testosterone levels that are low have shown a direct correlation to many conditions that could lead to erectile dysfunction, obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and endothelial dysfunction.

Another result of low levels of testosterone in men is that it can also lead to reduced testicle size, loss of body hair, lethargy, muscle weakness and excessive breast growth.

It is important to consume a well-balanced diet and exercise regularly to elevate testosterone levels. It is also critical to note the side effects and long term effects each type of treatment listed in the testosterone definition may have on the body before actually pursuing it.

Signs of Low Testosterone

Signs of low testosterone play a crucial role in the determination of health and sexual well-being of men.

Research has shown that the lack of testosterone can have harmful effects on a mans body. Men suffering from low testosterone side effects should straightway seek treatment.

A decrease in the levels of testosterone can be attributed to aging and goes hand in hand with it. It has been proposed that as a man reaches the age of 30, every year thereafter causes the testosterone levels to diminish by about 1 percent.

Low testosterone levels have been linked with a decline in sex drive and libido. Therefore decreased sex drive and problems such as erectile dysfunction are probable signs of low testosterone levels. Let us look at the possible signs of low testosterone.

Testosterone therapy improves sexual functions – INDIA New England – India New England

Posted: August 18, 2017 at 1:40 pm

New York Long-term testosterone replacement therapy improves both sexual and urinary functions as well as quality of life for men suffering from a condition due to deficiency of the hormone, according to a study.

Testosterone is a steroid hormone involved in the regulation of sexual function, urinary health and metabolism as well as a number of other critical functions.

For most men, testosterone concentration declines slowly with age and may not cause immediate major symptoms.

However, some men may experience a host of signs and symptoms constituting a clinical condition called Testosterone Deficiency (TD), or male hypogonadism, which is attributed to insufficient levels of testosterone.

As a result, they experience symptoms as varied as erectile dysfunction, low energy, fatigue, depressed mood and an increased risk of diabetes.

The study, published in the Journal of Urology, investigated the effects of long-term testosterone replacement therapy on urinary health and sexual function as well as quality of life in men with diagnosed, symptomatic testosterone deficiency.

More than 650 men in their 50s and 60s enrolled in the study, some with unexplained testosterone deficiency and others with known genetic and auto-immune causes for their hypogonadism.

It is thought that testosterone treatment in men may increase prostate size and worsen lower urinary tract symptoms, said Abdulmaged Traish, Professor of Urology at Boston University School of Medicine in the US.

However, the researchers discovered that despite increased prostate size in the group that received testosterone therapy, there were fewer urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, incomplete bladder emptying, weak urinary stream and waking up at night to urinate.

In addition to these subjective improvements, the researchers conducted objective testing that showed that those men treated with testosterone emptied their bladders more fully.

Finally, testosterone treatment also increased the scores patients received on assessments of their erectile/sexual health and general quality of life, the study said.

Older men with ‘low T’ can improve their sex lives with testosterone therapy, study says – Men’s Fitness

Posted: August 17, 2017 at 1:43 pm

We hate to say it, but low testosterone levels can have a slew of negative effects for older guys.

But even now there's a scientific tug-of-war over testosterone-replacement therapy. Sure, it sounds greatwhat guy doesn't want more of the "masculine hormone"?but risks of testosterone therapy can include the growth of pre-existing cancerous cells, testicular shrinkage, infertility, even heart attack or stroke, as one of our writers discovered.

The positives are just as extreme. Aside from increased strength and motivation, men can enjoy greater urinary health, better sexual function, and a higher quality of life, according to new research from Boston University Medical Center.

In the study, published in the Journal of Urology, researchersenrolled roughly 650 men in their 50s and 60s. Some of the men had unexplained testosterone deficiencies, while others suffered from genetic hypogonadism (when gonads fail to produce testosterone). About 360 men received testosterone therapy for eight years (the remaining didn't).

What's more, the men who underwent testosterone therapy enjoyed a significant bump in their urinary and sexual function (lower instance of erectile dysfunction, higher sex drive), as well as better quality of life (sunnier mood, higher confidence).

Another interesting detail: Two men in the treatment group died from causes unrelated to cardiovascular failure, while 21 in the non-treatment group died (19 deaths were cardiovascular-related). Those mortality rates suggested that testosterone therapy isn't necessarily linked to a greater instance of heart attack or stroke, the researchers suggested.

"It is thought that testosterone treatment in men may increase prostate size and worsen lower urinary tract symptoms," study author Abdulmaged Traish, Ph.D., said in a press release. Researchers discovered somemenhad larger prostates post-testosterone therapy, but they experienced fewer instances of frequent urination, incomplete bladder emptying, and waking at night to urinate.

"[Testosterone therapy] is well-tolerated with progressive and sustained improvement in urinary and sexual function, and overall improvement in quality of life," Traish added.

Something to think about if your testosterone takes a hit one day and you want to fight manopause head-on.

Inside an appointment at Seattle Children’s Gender Clinic – KING5.com

Seattle Children's hospital opened one of the first clinics for transgender kids in the state nearly a year ago, and now hundreds of patients from multiple states are seeking its services.

For many kids like Michael Hefferan, the Gender Clinic has opened the door to a new life.

"It was about ninth grade that I came out to everyone at school with my family," Hefferan said.

The 17-year-old remembers hearing about a doctor at Children's who treats trans teenagers and demanded to see him.

"I was pretty much like, 'We need to schedule this as soon as we can. I don't care if it's on my birthday. We need to go in and we need to meet him,'" he said laughing.

Now more than 10 appointments in, Hefferan is here on a Tuesday for a routine checkup.

A nurse takes his vitals, checks his height, weight, and his blood pressure. As part of his transition, the Bothell High School student has been on hormone replacement therapy.

"My voice has gotten a lot deeper," Hefferan said. "I've grown some facial hair. I guess I feel more masculine in my body. I don't know how or why, but I do."

He keeps his medication in a plastic box. A syringe, a notebook where he keeps track of all his injections, his small bottles of testosterone, and band-aids. He administers the shots to himself once every two weeks.

"I just do it right in my stomach, an inch away from the belly button," he said.

Michael Hefferan discusses his physical and emotional health with Dr. David Breland at Seattle Childrens Gender Clinic. (Photo: KING)

This doctor's visit will help determine how the hormone therapy is working.

The appointment is mostly an open dialogue between doctor and patient. Dr. DavidBreland, who heads up the Gender Clinic at Seattle Children's, asks Hefferan how he's feeling, checking in on Hefferan's physical and emotional health.

"Are you dating anyone?" Breland asked.

"No," the teen answered.

The doctor also checks on the impact of the testosterone. Hefferan said he's been noticing facial hair. Breland notes his patient doesn't seem to have any acne.

Hefferan's mom has witnessed dramatic changes in his mood.

"He is so much happier," said Rayna Hefferan. "He's not as mad or as angry at times as he used to be."

Happiness is the goal, according to the clinic's director, and to have the outcome of the particular hormone.

"For testosterone, a lot of my patients want a deeper voice, they want some hair, they want more muscle mass, etc.," said Breland. "And a lot of my patients want to be as 'stealth' as possible. They want to be in the community and perceived as that gender."

"My chest is one of the things that make me most uncomfortable with my body," said Hefferan.

He now binds his chest, a technique used to minimize the appearance of a person's breasts.

"Top surgery is something I've always really wanted from the beginning," said Hefferan. "Just because I bind every day and it's not always the most comfortable."

Seattle Children's does not offer surgeries but provides referrals. For Hefferan, the procedure is on the horizon.

For now,Breland tells him to stay on the same dosage of testosterone, as they wait for his blood test results.

Hefferan is thankful to have a clinic who treats his true self.

"It's really important for the younger kids who come here to have that affirmation that you're okay," he said. "That there is nothing wrong with you for not feeling comfortable with the gender you were assigned when you were born."

Each patient goes through a mental health readiness assessment before starting treatment.

The Gender Clinic now has 250 active patients and hundreds more inquiring about treatment.
