Detox diets cause more harm than benefit. They help you lose 1-2 kgs in an unsustainable manner. The minute you start eating your regular food, you regain weight. Such yo-yo diets spoil your metabolism in the long run and should be avoided at all costs, adds Anju Valecha, co-founder and head-nutritionist, Simvalecha.
Juice cleanses may offer temporary weight loss, but the effect is not long-lasting. They do not provide a sustainable solution to achieving our health goals, says nutritionist Lovneet Batra.
2. Deficient in nutrients
Juices are almost completely devoid of protein, healthy fats, and certain vitamins (like B12), which are vital to health. Fibre is removed from fruits and vegetables during the juicing process. Fibre is important for gut health, keeps us satiated, prevents blood sugar from going up too quickly, and aids digestion, states Dr Bahl.
Detox diets lack nutrients like proteins, fats, certain vitamins and minerals which are essential for our health. Therefore, it is important to understand that juices can complement diets, but cannot replace solid or wholesome foods, adds Dhivya Mathew, dietitian, Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore.
Juice cleanses lack fibre, which is a very important macronutrient, without it one will feel constantly hungry. Those considering switching to juice cleanses as part of their detox diet should not do so as it is not a sustainable way of losing weight. One should instead opt for a smoothie for breakfast or a mid-day snack instead of skipping a wholesome lunch or dinner, remarks Shriya Naheta Wadhwa, founder, Zama Organics.
3. Causes Tiredness and Irritability
Most people on a juice cleanse don't meet their daily nutrition needs, which results in them being constantly tired and irritable. As someone who has tried a 7-day juice cleanse, I would definitely not recommend it to anyone. I was working about 14+ hours a day and was unable to focus and get any real work done. I was agitated and had trouble even sleeping. I suggest losing weight using simple realistic methods so that the results are sustainable, says Simran Valecha, fitness expert and co-founder, Simvalecha.
