Killing Eve may not have been as intense as it was in the past, and thats okay. The better shows fall under the weight of their own mythology. But BBC Americas thriller about an international assassin and the agent caught on its web is at least making a solid return effort.
Killing Eve Season 3 opens months after Villanelle (Jodie Comer) shot Eva (Sandra Oh) and left her dead, comfortably without turning to her departure and seeing if that bullet was actually did what it promised. Of course not, because this is the story of killing Eve not killing her.
However, Eves current life is no picnic. He is separated from his wife Niko (Owen McDonnell) and cut off from MI6, haunted by everything that happened in Rome and probably all since Villanelles life.
But this is a cat and mouse game, after all, and soon enough the cat (or Eva the mouse?) Will pick a Villanelle return thread and will not allow it. There is no ego this time around, there is no burning desire to catch a celebrity killed and close this case for good. Eve was scared, for herself and everyone she knew to lose the normalcy they had.

Where Season 2 plays the relationship of two women to give fans a glimpse of something there, Season 3 does so with a clear intention. For one, Eva knows Villanelles feelings and clings to them as a last resort. She focused her own energy as much as possible from how she felt about Villanelle, as the answer stared at her face: She was obsessed with chasing. He liked a psychopathic murderer in the way one would associate with a new acquaintance with drinks, and he truly did not miss the fun and challenge of that companion, whether acrimonious or nice.
Even with questionable stakes, Killing Eve Season 3 feels back to form.
Villanelle looks at the separation through the lens of her own psychopathy. In that version, he and Eve fell in love and effectively separated. She portrays and thinks of Eve as a dating, feeling her presence, refocusing her attention what she wouldnt give for another taste of that attention. In fact, Villanelle is struggling to return to business as usual with the new handler (Harriet Walter) and new assignments even a protg. He left loose ends and extra bodies and only one person had to choose them.
The first episode ended with a surprise, and many more where it came from. But killing players on the day and second characters only emphasizes the unwillingness of the show to make even greater sacrifices. The same problem occurred in Game of Thrones later period, which was filled with empty bluster about how anyone could die, but for some reason not yet under a certain level of charge had been made.
The first five episodes screened for the credits introduce a slew of new characters, including Carolyns daughter (Gemona Whelan herself), Kennys new teammates (Danny Sapani and Turlough Convery ), and even members of Villanelles or rather, the Oksanas family. However none of these characters feel like they want to stay, because they probably wont. This is just about to introduce new pawns to a chess game before the stronger pieces become more dangerous. As more bodies inevitably congregate, Eva and Carolyns guilt and trauma will shrink until there is room for a little more.

Even with questionable stakes, Killing Eve Season 3 feels back to form. There is no overarching mystery-of-the-month like Aaron Peels storyline last season (though it did make at least the characters), so we spent our time with Eva and Carolyn as they chased the Twelve, and included Villanelle and Dasha on their missions. A pair of Comer and Walter are fabulous, creating a dynamic entirely unlike Villanelles with Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) yet less compelling.
Three seasons in, we can admit what Eva Polastri would not do, which is why we also love the thrill of the chase. Killing Eve may be killing us next season, but if these award-winning actresses can keep us tied to their chemical killings and quality writing, we are here.
Killing Eve kills Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on BBC America and AMC.
