The keto diet: Its highs and lows plus 5 recipes – The Gazette

Posted: February 9, 2020 at 5:41 pm

By Daniel Neman, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

My friends Mike and Robin have been on the keto diet for a couple of years. They lost a ton of weight, and they look fit and trim better than Ive ever seen them, and Ive known them more than 30 years.

Their results are not unusual. The keto diet often leads to rapid weight loss.

The trick lies in keeping it off. Mike and Robin have done it well, but a lot of people cant. And therein lies a problem, according to Jennifer McDaniel, a registered dietitian and the owner of McDaniel Nutrition Therapy in St. Louis.

While you might gain benefits in the short term just like any other restrictive diet, most people like, 90% of the people have trouble staying on it. When they lose the weight and they cant maintain the weight that they attained, thats just another failed diet, she said.

The keto diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrates diet its like the Atkins diet on steroids, McDaniel said. People on the diet strive to consume 70% to 80% of their calories through fats, as little as 5% through carbohydrates and the rest through protein.

This helps us lose weight because it forces our bodies to burn fat for energy instead of its preferred fuel, carbohydrates.

McDaniel recommends that her clients not go on the keto diet. The diet changes the microbiome in their bodies (the bacteria, fungi and more that live inside us). It is difficult for people on the diet to consume enough fiber, which can lead to constipation and other gastrointestinal nastiness. And because carbohydrates hold onto water, people on the diet are often dehydrated, she said.

And yet, as Mike and Robin and thousands of others can attest, it works. So I decided to try a few recipes to see how they tasted.

The rules of the keto diet are highly restrictive, which can make cooking difficult. You need to avoid fruit, sugars, grains, beans and legumes, rice, potatoes, candy and juice.

Ingredients to be encouraged include meat, fatty fish, eggs, butter and cream, cheese, nuts and seeds, certain oils (olive, avocado, coconut) and low-carb vegetables most green vegetables, tomatoes, onions, peppers and the like.

Its a lot to take in, so I began with a simple and entirely wonderful dish of Citrus-Marinated Olives. These are a marvelous treat, combining the heady earthiness of olives with bright notes of orange and lemon. Though the flavors are disparate, they work surprisingly well together.

Best of all, you make them in mere minutes.

Another winner was Keto Egg Cups, a dish that concisely presents everything that is good about keto cooking: Little cups made from prosciutto hold eggs mixed with cream, spinach, roasted red peppers and mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.

Its a delightful conglomeration of high-fat goodies that come together into a hand-held snack. And its just as fun at room temperature as it is warm.

Two entrees came next. First, I took a recipe for Instant-Pot Keto Mediterranean Chicken and made it a recipe for Keto Mediterranean Chicken Without an Instant Pot. It only took about five minutes longer than the Instant-Pot version, and it was deeply satisfying.

Ill admit, though, that I could not commit to full keto cooking with this one. As written, the recipe calls for searing six chicken thighs and then cooking the dish in the resulting fat.

My six thighs rendered out a half cup of fat. I just couldnt do it. I couldnt cook with and I certainly couldnt eat that much fat. I know the keto diet requires what seems like a shocking amount of fat to work, but I just couldnt see it. I poured out half of the fat, and the dish still felt greasy to me.

Greasy, but delicious. Meaty chicken thighs are paired with olives, capers, oregano and a cutting splash of vinegar. Its presented with a fresh-tasting yogurt sauce, making an impressive presentation. Id happily eat it anytime, especially if I poured out all but one tablespoon of that fat.

The other entree, Keto Breaded Chicken Cutlets, isnt bad but Id only make it again if I were on the keto diet. The chicken is dredged through almond flour before frying, which gives it a duller flavor than wheat flour.

With wheat flour, the same recipe would be excellent, if familiar. If youre on the keto diet, almond flour is definitely the way to go. Just be sure to use a lot of salt.

The last dish I made was a dessert called Black and White Keto Fat Bombs. Seriously, thats the name, and seriously, thats what they are. They are chocolate-and-vanilla candies that are made with coconut oil and almonds, plus low-carb, powdered sweetener, sugar-free vanilla extract and unsweetened cocoa powder.

How did they taste? Not bad, actually, or at least not too bad. But the texture was so oily and off-putting that most taste testers threw away their samples. One said it was like eating butter.

If youre on the keto diet and youre looking for an extra infusion of fat, then Id say to go ahead and make it. Otherwise, this is one to avoid.

My friend Robin swears by the keto diet and says she is passionate about it. Her health indicators are all great, and she says she has higher energy and alertness. And though the diet is restrictive, she likes what she can eat: cheese, olive oil, butter, nuts and dark chocolate.

The biggest thing she misses is fruit, but she does not miss the 40 pounds she lost.

Then again, I have another friend, Roger, who lost 65 pounds. He just eats more healthfully and mindfully, and walks every day. That sounds easier.

BLACK AND WHITE KETO FAT BOMBS

Yield: 15 servings

2 cups slivered almonds

1 cup coconut oil

1 to 2 tablespoons of your favorite low-carb powdered sweetener

1 teaspoon orange zest

2 teaspoons vanilla extract (sugar-free if on keto diet)

Small pinch salt

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Line a mini-muffin tin with mini liners.

Pulse and then process the almonds, oil, sweetener, vanilla, zest and salt until smooth except for small chunks of almond (like chunky peanut butter). Remove half to a small bowl and stir in the cocoa powder.

Fill half of one liner with the vanilla mixture and then quickly fill the other half with the chocolate mixture (it should remind you of a black-and-white cookie). Repeat with the remaining vanilla and chocolate mixtures. Tap the tin on the counter a few times.

Freeze until solid, about 30 minutes. You can remove the liners if youd like. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

KETO MEDITERRANEAN CHICKEN

Yield: 4 servings

1 tablespoon olive oil

8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs

Salt and pepper

3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

1 cup pitted kalamata olives

2 tablespoons capers

2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 cup whole-milk Greek yogurt

1/4 cup fresh flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped

2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped

1 teaspoon lemon zest

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Liberally sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper and cook half of the pieces, skin-side down, until the skin is deeply browned, 6 to 8 minutes. Flip and cook until the other side is deeply browned, 4 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate and repeat with remaining pieces of chicken.

Pour out all but 1 tablespoon of the fat (if on the keto diet, keep all the fat in the pot). Return pot to heat and add garlic; cook until golden brown, about 1 minute. Add the olives, capers, vinegar, oregano and 1/2 cup water; stir to combine and to scrape up any browned bits at the bottom of the pot. Return chicken pieces to pot and stir to mix.

Cover and cook at a simmer until chicken is done, about 30 minutes. Remove the chicken and boil the sauce to reduce it by half.

Meanwhile, mix the yogurt, parsley, mint, lemon zest and lemon juice, plus a large pinch of salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Taste and season with more salt and pepper, if needed.

Serve the chicken with its sauce, and the yogurt sauce on the side.

KETO EGG CUPS

Yield: 3 servings

1 tablespoon butter, see note

6 large, thin slices of prosciutto

1/3 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/4 cup grated Parmesan

1/4 cup packed baby spinach leaves, chopped

1/4 cup roasted red peppers, chopped

6 large eggs

1/4 cup heavy cream

Salt and pepper

Note: To make this recipe even more keto-friendly, instead of greasing the muffin tin with 1 tablespoon of butter, melt 2 tablespoons and brush the tin with it. It will pool in the bottom of each cup, but that is OK.

Position an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 400 degrees.

Grease the cups of a muffin tin with the 1 tablespoon of butter (or brush with 2 tablespoons of melted butter). Line each cup with a slice of prosciutto, folding and overlapping so that the entire surface of the cup is covered and no metal is peeking through. Divide the mozzarella evenly among the cups. Repeat with the Parmesan, spinach and roasted red peppers.

Whisk the eggs and cream in a large measuring cup or small pitcher; add some salt and a few grinds of pepper. Pour the egg mixture in each cup, making sure not to overfill.

Bake until the eggs are set and wobble only slightly, 10 to 12 minutes (the eggs will continue to cook after they come out). Let cool 5 minutes, then use a thin knife or offset spatula, if necessary, to loosen the prosciutto from the edges of each cup. Transfer to a plate for serving.

CITRUS-MARINATED OLIVES

Yield: 4 to 6 servings

1/4 cup olive oil

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

2 sprigs fresh thyme

1 garlic clove, thinly sliced

1 strip lemon zest, removed with a vegetable peeler

1 strip orange zest, removed with a vegetable peeler

Salt and pepper

1 cup Castelvetrano olives

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon orange juice

Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the red pepper flakes, thyme, garlic, lemon zest, orange zest, salt and pepper to taste and cook, stirring occasionally, until garlic is pale golden, about 2 minutes. Stir in olives and cook until just warm, 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice and orange juice. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Per serving (based on 4): 167 calories; 18 g fat; 3 g saturated fat; no cholesterol; 1 g protein; 4 g carbohydrate; 1 g sugar; 2 g fiber; 829 mg sodium; 39 mg calcium

Uber (UBER) Up on Narrower-Than-Expected Q4 Loss & Rosy View – Nasdaq

Posted: February 9, 2020 at 5:41 pm

Uber Technologies, Inc. UBER released its fourth earnings report since going public in May. The company incurred a loss of 64 cents per share (or net loss of $1.1 billion, up 24% year over year) in the fourth quarter of 2019, narrower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 68 cents. Moreover, the amount of loss decreased year over year. However, total revenues of $4,069 million missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4,099.8 million but rose 37% year over year.

The better-than expected bottom-line performance coupled with the companys commentary that it will reap profits on an adjusted basis by the fourth quarter of 2020, boosted investor confidence in the stock. While total revenues surged 34% to $359 million in the Asia Pacific region, it increased 31% to $553 million in Latin America. Monthly active platform consumers also grew 22% to $111 million.

Gross bookings from Rides improved 18% to $13.51 billion while the same from Eats augmented 71% to $4.37 billion. Gross bookings from Freight also climbed 74% to $219 million. Total gross bookings ascended 28% to $18.13 billion.

Additionally, cost of revenues (excluding depreciation and amortization) at Uber, which competes primarily with Lyft LYFT in the ride hailing market, escalated primarily due to higher driver incentives. Total expenses on sales and marketing shot up 22.1% to $1.25 billion in the reported quarter.

Uber, carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), exited the fourth quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $10.87 billion compared with $6.41 billion at the end of 2018. Where Will Datadog Be in 5 Years? – Nasdaq

Posted: February 9, 2020 at 5:41 pm

Datadog (NASDAQ: DDOG) was one of 2019's most successful IPOs. Shares were priced at $27 but ended their first day of trading at over $37 per share. Today the stock is up over 20% from where it closed that first day, and up over 40% from where the IPO priced. Considering the company's third-quarter 2019 revenue grew 88% year over year, it's easy to understand why Wall Street loves this company.

Investing is always a forward-looking activity. And looking five years into Datadog's future, business should still be booming.

Datadog's full-year 2019 revenue is expected to come in at $350 million to $352 million -- good for 77% to 80% growth over 2018.This mind-blowing growth demonstrates how important its product is. Companies these days use many cloud products, from cloud computing services like Amazon'sAWS, to communication apps like Slack. The diversity makes enterprise technology complicated, but Datadog, calling itself "cloud agnostic," integrates everything to provide a centralized real-time monitoring platform.

Before it went public, Datadog operated at a smaller loss than it does right now, and was even profitable some quarters. But in the year leading up to its IPO, expenses from research and development outpaced revenue growth, as did sales and marketing expenses.Although this spending makes the company unprofitable, we'll see why it's actually money well spent.

Datadog, while currently unprofitable, isn't burning through an exorbitant amount of cash. Free cash flow in Q3 was negative $3.7 million, and negative $10 million through the first nine months of 2019. However, the proceeds from its IPO put Datadog in a well-capitalized position. The company has $771 million in cash on the balance sheet and no long-term debt. In short, Datadog can pursue its opportunities over the next five years.

According to a report by IDC, sponsored by data-storage company Seagate, 175 zetabytes of data will be created in 2025.Enterprise is expected to create 80% of that data. Not all data will be stored or tracked, but enterprise will certainly see a growing data pile needing to be addressed from a variety of angles, including what Datadog offers. So, the relevance of its service is only increasing.

Further, Datadog still has many potential enterprise customers to pursue. When it wentpublic, only around 35% of Fortune 100 companies used Datadog, and it still has low market penetration overall. The company estimates its current addressable market at $35 billion -- roughly 100 times Datadog's revenue. Therefore, the increased spending in sales and marketing is a solid choice.

Also, Datadog is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) company. When investing in a SaaS company, it's crucial to examine the dollar-based net retention rate. This metric tracks existing customer spending. Datadog is constantly introducing new products, which boosts the dollar-based net retention rate as customers upgrade. When Datadog went public, the dollar-based net retention rate was 146% -- quite high. Not only does this demonstrate how much Datadog's customers love it, it also shows why the increased spending in research and development is another solid choice.

While Datadog obviously has a great product and opportunity, investors should consider the competition. Specifically,Splunk (NASDAQ: SPLK) recently announced a $1 billion acquisition of SignalFX -- an application-monitoring company similar to Datadog. An impressive 90 of the Fortune 100 companies are already Splunk customers. As SignalFX integrates into Splunk, those customers could just choose to use Splunk's application monitoring rather than go with Datadog.

Not winning over enough new customers, or even losing customers to the competition, would slow Datadog's revenue growth. And that would likely be devastating to Datadog's stock. It currently trades at 44 times sales -- one of the highest price-to-sales ratios out there. For comparison, Splunk trades at around 12 times sales, but its revenue is only growing 30%. The market justifies Datadog's higher valuation because of its 88% revenue growth. But if the growth rate slows significantly, Datadog's valuation would get adjusted.

That said, competition goes both ways. While investors should assess the risk of Splunk and others, Datadog could likewise introduce products to steal business away from Splunk. The company introduced 15 new products and functionalities in Q3 alone. So it's possible this company will keep punching above its weight class.

The stock isn't without risk, but there's reason to believe Datadog can keep growing at a very high rate. Enormous data creation will keep its product in demand. Low market penetration gives it the opportunity to keep growing. And high net-dollar revenue retention showscurrent customers like it enough to expand the relationship -- suggesting more companies will like Datadog if they try it.

Buy Ducatis New V4 Superleggera And Theyll Let You Ride Their Real Race Bikes (Maybe) – Forbes

Posted: February 8, 2020 at 8:47 am

Is really, really fast just your speed? The new hyper-lightweight, obscenely powerful Ducati V4 ... [+] Superleggera is your bike - but there's only going to be 500 of them.

Now thats a perk. Yes, Ducati has produced a positively bonkers bespoke velocity tool in the new V4 Superleggera (thats Italian for fast as hell and as spendy as you might imagine), but for the 500 lucky buyers of the rapid red 234hp street-legal land missile, the most interesting feature might be the chance to throw a leg over the actual race bike the Superleggera is based on and get in some ultra-hot laps at the Mugello racetrack in Tuscany, Italy. More on that below.

No price has been announced for Ducatis latest two-wheeled pice de rsistance, internally known as Project 1708, but seeing as how the last Superleggera went for about $70,000 per copy, we expect this even higher-performing masterpiece will cost that or more. But as is usually the case with Ducatis limited edition hyperbikes, you do get what you pay for. In this case, that includes nearly all-carbon fiber construction - frame, wheels, bodywork - for a stunning weight of 350 pounds in street trim, and 335 pounds when prepped for the track. Much of the weight loss for track trim comes from fitment of a track-only (yeah, ha ha) exhaust system made from titanium and possibly ground unicorn horns. Both the Superleggeras street and track weights are actually well below the 370-pound minimum weight World Superbike imposes on their racing machines!

As mentioned earlier, Ducati has apparently once again found a way to extract even more energy from a drop of liquid dinosaur as the positively howling naturally aspirated Desmosedici Stradale V4 power plant - downsized to 998cc from the Panigale V4s 1098cc mill to cut weight - cranks out 224 ponies for relaxed cruising around town with your pals and 234hp for scorching those pals at the track in race trim. The gives the Superleggera a power-to-weight ratio of 1.54 horsepower for every one kilogram. Compare that to, say, a full-pop Porsche 911 GT3 RS thats hauling 2.7kg for every horsepower and you can begin to glimpse the acceleration that lies in wait with the Superleggeras inverse P:W figure.

Safely controlling all that juice is beyond the scope of most humans, so the Superleggera is sporting some serious rider tech including two race modes and five user-settable riding modes (Fast, Even Faster and OMG would be some of my naming choices), a broad swath of ABS systems, traction control, quick shifter, slide control for MotoGP-worthy corner exits and a very comprehensive color LCD panel to toggle all of your tweaks and tuning. Proprietary Brembo brakes and hlins best suspenders are standard fare, natch, as is LED lighting all around and a properly noisy dry clutch.

Is this your track day riding style? It'll need to to be if you want to qualify for a ride on the ... [+] Ducati Superbike - or MotoGP machine.

The look of the Superleggera is a cross between art, purpose and design dictates, including not one but two sets of downforce-creating wings sprouting from the front fairing, which may be the bikes only stylistic sore points. Maybe they have quick releases for street riding? Ill check into it. But the wings are there for good reason as Ducati says they create even more more needed track-riding traction enhancement than the system on the equally powerful (but heavier) Panigale V4 R.

If youre rolling your eyes at these power and weight figures, then youre probably racing professionally or close to it, or youre a bit full of yourself. Want to find out which? Then reel one in and take advantage of Ducatis invitation to show your chops aboard their actual World Superbike machine, and if youre really down for the sickness, option up for one of the 30 spots to take a few laps on their pinnacle GP20 MotoGP machine. There are a ton of asterisks, of course, including weight and height requirements, and seasoned Ducati factory riders eyeballing your skillz before they let you go anywhere near their multi-million dollar racing stallions. But if thats you, have at it.

Going fast? Just wing it! The Superleggera sports four sculpted airfoils to help push the front end ... [+] down at speed. Perhaps not the prettiest of things, but needed.

Here’s How Joaquin Phoenix Lost More Than 50 Pounds to Play the Joker – menshealth.com

Posted: February 8, 2020 at 8:47 am

In order to play the lead role in Joker, Joaquin Phoenix underwent a dramatic transformation, and as a result he looks truly, unsettlingly emaciated in the film. The 44-year-old actor lost a shocking 52 pounds ahead of shooting, and he's just revealed the drastic methods it took to achieve such significant weight loss.

In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, Phoenix explained that he sought medical guidance in order to ensure that he was able to lose the weight safely. "Its something Ive done before and you work with a doctor regimented and overseen and safe," he said.

The old adage might dictate that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but the rumor mill soon had fans believing that Phoenix was, in fact, following extreme medical advice and eating just an apple a day in order to keep losing the weight but he says that's not true.

"It wasnt an apple a day," he said. "No, youve also got lettuce and steamed green beans."

Such a vast reduction in his daily calorie intake meant that Phoenix was able to drop 52 pounds, all the while resisting temptation in the form of Joker director Todd Phillips. "Todd did have these f**king pretzels that I love," he said. "And hed just have bags of them in his office! And that was difficult."

Pushing yourself to extremes in order to play the Joker has become something of a fashion in Hollywood in the last decade. Jared Leto got extremely lean and played a series of bizarre, sinister pranks on his castmates in order to get into character for Suicide Squad, and Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight earned him a posthumous Oscar (and, arguably, helped popularize the idea that playing the Joker is akin to playing Hamlet). The arduous process is also what helped snag Phoenix a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a SAG Award, and he's the favorite to win the Best Actor Oscar at the 2020 Oscars.

Needless to say, just like the increasingly nefarious behavior of the title character in Joker, this kind of diet isn't something that should be emulated in real life.

‘We are who we are’: The trade deadline passes, and the Spurs fall to 0-3 on a road trip that could decide… – The Athletic

Posted: February 8, 2020 at 8:47 am

PORTLAND The NBA trade deadline came and went, and to the surprise of no one around the team, the Spurs stood pat. Its what theyve almost always done: Dont deal prospects, dont empty your supply of draft picks, continue to build from the inside and trust in the process thats led to all the success over the years.

But this year theres a sense of urgency that isnt normal in San Antonio. The Spurs let another lead slip away. This time, unlike the loss to the Clippers on Monday, the Spurs fell to a team thats neck and neck with them in the race for that final playoff spot in the West and the season has begun a slow spiral toward a place of which many San Antonio fans have no recollection.

Its almost as if the Spurs are finding themselves near the Bermuda Triangle of the NBA: Basically, what the (bleep) is happening and will San Antonios ship simply sink around the leagues funnel and...

The Military Diet: Lose 10 Pounds in Just 1 Week?

Posted: February 8, 2020 at 8:46 am

The military diet is currently one of the world's most popular "diets." It is claimed to help you lose weight quickly, up to 10 pounds (4.5 kg) in a single week.

The military diet is also free. There is no book, expensive food or supplement you need to buy.

But does this diet actually work, and is it something you should try? This article explains everything you need to know about the military diet.

The military diet, also called the 3-day diet, is a weight loss diet that can help you lose up to 10 pounds in a week.

The military diet plan involves a 3-day meal plan followed by 4 days off, and the weekly cycle is repeated again and again until you reach your goal weight.

Proponents of the diet claim that it was designed by nutritionists in the US military in order to get soldiers into top shape quickly.

However, the truth is that the diet isn't affiliated with any military or governmental institution.

The military diet goes by several other names as well, including the navy diet, the army diet and even the ice cream diet.

The 3-day military diet is actually split into 2 phases over a 7-day period.

For the first 3 days, you must follow a set low-calorie meal plan for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are no snacks between meals.

Total calorie intake during this phase is roughly 1,1001,400 calories per day.

This is much lower than the average adult's intake, but you can check your own calorie requirements using this calculator.

For the remaining 4 days of the week, you are encouraged to eat healthy and continue to keep your calorie intake low.

Proponents of the diet claim that you can repeat the diet several times until you reach your goal weight.

This is the 3-day meal plan on the military diet.

This is the meal plan for day 1. It amounts to around 1,400 calories.

Breakfast:

Lunch:

Dinner:

These are the meals for day 2, amounting to around 1,200 calories.

Breakfast:

Lunch:

Dinner:

Here is the plan for day 3, which amounts to around 1,100 calories.

Breakfast:

Lunch:

Dinner:

Feel free to drink as much coffee or tea as you want, as long as you don't add any calories from sugar or cream. Drink plenty of water too.

The remainder of the week also involves dieting.

Snacks are permitted and there are no food group restrictions. However, you are encouraged to limit portion sizes and keep total calorie intake under 1,500 per day.

You can find a list of websites and apps to track your calorie intake in this article.

There are no other rules for the remaining 4 days of the diet.

Substitutions are allowed during the 3-day phase for those with dietary restrictions, but portions should contain the same number of calories.

For example, if you have a peanut allergy, you can swap peanut butter for almond butter.

You can also swap 1 cup of tuna for some almonds if you are vegetarian.

All that matters is that the calories remain the same. If you change the meal plan in any way, you need to be counting calories.

Proponents of the military diet encourage drinking hot lemon water, but recommend against artificially sweetened beverages. However, there is no scientific reason why this would be a good idea.

There have been no studies on the military diet. However, the average person is very likely to lose a few pounds due to the week-long calorie restriction.

If fewer calories enter your fat tissue than leave it, you lose fat. Period.

However, proponents of the diet claim that it has a certain weight loss advantage due to the "food combinations" in the meal plan. These combinations are said to increase your metabolism and burn fat, but there is no truth behind these claims.

Coffee and green tea do contain compounds that can slightly increase metabolism, but there are no known combinations of food able to do this (1, 2, 3, 4).

And, if you look at the overall foods included in the meal plan, it simply doesn't seem like a fat-burning diet.

Foods high in protein boost metabolism more than other foods (5, 6). But most of the meals in the military diet are low in protein and high in carbs, which is a bad combination for weight loss.

Some people also claim this diet has similar health benefits to intermittent fasting. However, there is no fasting involved in the diet, so this is false.

The military diet is likely safe for the average person because it's too short to do lasting harm.

However, if you were to follow this diet for months at a time, the strict limit on calories could put you at risk of nutrient deficiencies.

This is especially true if you do not regularly eat vegetables and other quality foods on your days off.

Additionally, eating hot dogs, crackers and ice cream every week has the potential to cause metabolic issues. Junk food should not be a regular part of your diet.

In terms of sustainability, this diet is fairly easy to do. It doesn't rely on long-term habit changes and only requires willpower for a short amount of time.

That being said, it probably won't help you keep the weight off for very long because it doesn't help you change your habits.

This diet became popular because it claims you can lose 10 pounds (4.5 kg) in a week.

Theoretically, this rate of weight loss is possible for overweight people who severely restrict calories. However, most of the weight loss will be due to loss of water, not fat.

Water weight drops rapidly as the body's glycogen stores decline, which happens when you restrict carbs and calories (7).

This looks good on the scales, but that weight will be regained when you begin eating normally again.

If you want to lose a few pounds quickly, then the military diet can help.

But you are likely to regain the weight back very fast too. This is simply not a good diet for lasting weight loss.

If you're serious about losing weight and keeping it off, then there are many weight loss methods that are much better than the military diet.

VA Department and Virta Health Focus On Reversing Diabetes with Keto Diet – Myhealthyclick

Posted: February 8, 2020 at 8:46 am

The United StatesDepartment of Veterans Affairs has teamed up with Virta Health, a SiliconValley startup, to provide treatment clinically-proven to safely andsustainably reverse type 2 diabetes without medication or surgery.

The collaboration has beenat the heart of ongoing debates about the effect of the keto diet on reversingtype 2 diabetes.

Incepted in 2014, Virta isa startup health company that has designed and developed a proprietary systemthat encourages type 2 diabetic people to follow the keto diet, which is low incarbs and high in fats.

The keto diet has gainedimmense popularity in recent years with more and more people experiencing itsbenefits of losing weight and improved health. However, Virtas claim aboutreversing diabetes with the keto diet is unusual.

Type 2 diabetes is oftenlinked to obesity and Virta claims its studies have suggested that losingweight through keto could help control blood sugar levels in diabetics.

Some experts have doubtsabout the companys promise to reverse diabetes with the ketogenic diet. Theyalso expressed their concerns that the federal government is giving thecompanys promise too much acceptance.

Announcing thecollaboration, VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said, Virtas regimen would help thedepartment create a more comprehensive approach to care.

According to the agreement, the startup health company has been providing its service free to 400 VApatients for about a year, with ongoing evaluation of the service and theirhealth.

In November, Virta said theinitial 90-day results of its service were promising and veterans reportedweight loss, good control over blood sugar and lower reliance on diabetesmedication.

Former vice president ofVirta, Anand Parikh, said, One of the most important things about ourapproach is that we individualize for each person.

The company offers dietcoaching, monitoring, and support through a smartphone app, in which patientscan regularly upload their blood glucose readings and other medical details, such as blood pressure and weight.

However, the VAscollaboration with Virta has raised concerns among some experts.

In October, Rep. JoshGottheimer sent a letter to Wilkie, stating, The partnership between the VAand Virta Health Corporation provides tacit approval of the ketogenic diet as ameans to reverse the impacts of type 2 diabetes. Promoting a ketogenic diet forpatients with diabetes may put them at increased health risk.

Dr. Randall Stafford fromStanford University reviewed Virtas research and called the resultsencouraging. However, he said the comparison group was fairly useless, giventhat it was composed of people who did not want to change their diets.

He said results do not suggestthat the companys treatment alters diabetes. My interpretation is thatthe keto diet is a temporizing measure, not a cure, he added.

Cardiologist promotes heart health – News – The Wyoming County Examiner

Posted: February 8, 2020 at 8:46 am

STAFF PHOTO/BROOKE WILLIAMS Dr. Samir Pancholy frequently reminds patients that its never too late to improve their heart health.

Whether its American Heart Month or not, Dr. Samir Pancholy always reminds his patients that its never too late to improve their heart health.

The treatment of heart disease comes down to diet, diet, diet, exercise, and then medicine, in that order, he said. Procedures are like fire extinguishers. You need them when youre in the middle of a crisis, but they dont really change the course of the disease itself.

The general and interventional cardiologist takes care of patients with a broad variety of cardiovascular illnesses and performs procedures like catheterizations and stent placements.

Since 1996, Dr. Pancholy has been practicing in Clarks Summit, later opening North Penn Cardiovascular Specialists in 2007. His procedural practice is mainly in Regional Hospital of Scranton.

For 20 years, he has also been making trips to see patients in Tunkhannock.

Its been a very good journey for me as far as taking care of patients from Wyoming County and providing service to people who live over there, and working with the doctors in Wyoming County, particularly at Tyler Hospital, Pancholy said.

Outside of the office, Pancholy spends time trying to improve the field of cardiology through original inventions.

Were up to 20 different patents now in the USPTO and worldwide, he said. Were going to market our first device that we invented starting hopefully next month, and were just in the process of prototyping our second device. My whole focus is to make the catheterization procedure simpler and safer for patients.

Starting catheterization procedures from the groin used to be a common practice. In 2002, Pancholy learned an alternative method overseas, starting the procedure from the wrist instead.

We realized that one of the problems with the wrist is that sometimes the artery clogs up and shrivels up, he said. It blocks up the access for future procedures.

His device prevents the radial artery from clotting up and losing its patency.

The second invention in the works improves the transit of the catheters.

Our new device will allow the doctors to push these catheters safely through very unfriendly territory, he said. Its called a transporter catheter and its going to have four or five different embodiments.

Over the last two years, Pancholy has also trained in robotics for catheterization and stent procedures.

In December of 2018, he was part of a team overseas that performed a stent placement remotely from 20 miles away. Next year, he anticipates performing a transcontinental stent placement from Europe to India.

One day, he hopes this technology can become more widely applied to help patients in areas such as Tunkhannock.

Right now, our biggest problem in medicine is that we have a big shortage of doctors, and even a bigger shortage of specialized doctors, he said. If you can bring that expertise over the wire into a rural area, then I think the residents will have a lot to gain.

When it comes to heart health, its important to recognize warning signs such as abrupt changes in your ability to perform any type of exertion, Pancholy said. Discomfort in the chest and weak spells should also be red flags.

While various heart issues exist, Pancholy highlighted antherosclerotic heart disease caused by blockage in the arteries as a dangerous issue.

Every person has full control of how much plaque their arties build up by how they treat their body with their diet and their habits, he said.

While its never too late to change the bodys chemistry for the better, he said this education should begin with young children in schools before they grow into unhealthy adults.

Here were talking about health care expenditures as one of the biggest problems, he said. The bigger problem we are ignoring is the declining health of our population. Unless we fix that, nothing is going to fix our health crisis.

Local medical centers have plenty of educational resources, which Pancholy encouraged the public to use.

In acknowledgment of February as American Heart Month, Commonwealth Health has free heart health fairs planned for Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock (in the Lobby Cafe), Regional Hospital (McGowan Conference Center, General Services Building, 743 Jefferson Ave., Scranton), Wilkes-Barre General Hospital (1st Floor Concourse, Heart & Vascular Institute, 575 N. River St., Wilkes-Barre), and Berwick Hospital Center (in the lobby).

Kefir vs. yogurt: Benefits, nutrition, and more – Medical News Today

Posted: February 8, 2020 at 8:46 am

Kefir and yogurt can both offer health benefits because of the beneficial bacteria they contain.

However, kefir may be the better choice, as it has a wider variety of microorganisms.

Kefir and yogurt are both cultured foods that commonly come from dairy products. That said, nondairy alternatives of both foods are now widely available.

This article looks at the differences between kefir and yogurt, their health benefits and nutritional value, how to use them, and whether or not they have any side effects.

Kefir and yogurt have a similar sour, fermented taste, but there are many differences between them.

These differences include:

For centuries, people have made kefir using kefir grains and cows milk. It is also possible to make it with goat or sheep milk. Kefir grains resemble tiny cauliflower florets.

Manufacturers add the grains to the milk to ferment it, then they remove them. The remaining product is kefir. The grains are reusable in the next batch.

They can also make kefir dairy-free, by fermenting the grains with water or coconut water and sugar.

On the other hand, commercial producers make yogurt by heating a yogurt mix, then cooling it and adding the helpful bacteria.

Current standard procedures and regulations for yogurt production require the addition of both Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus as the starter culture.

This is the best starter culture due to the symbiotic relationship between the two species.

Both kefir and yogurt can help populate the gut with good bacteria. The difference is that kefir contains a wider variety of bacteria, and it also contains beneficial yeasts.

Two of the most common beneficial yeasts in kefir are Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces unisporus.

According to research, kefir may:

However, the variation in microorganisms in each batch make it difficult to verify the health effects of different products.

Yogurt often contains the probiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria. Probiotics are bacteria that can be beneficial to a persons health. Kefir also contains probiotics, as well as yeasts.

Research suggests that probiotics may help treat or prevent:

It is important for probiotics to survive the acidic environment in the gut. The authors of a 2017 review suggest that if Bifidobacterium strains are in fermented products such as kefir and yogurt, they should be acid resistant.

A 2019 study of people with metabolic syndrome who drank kefir for 12 weeks found some favorable changes to their gut bacteria.

However, the authors suggest that research into the probiotic potential of the fermented drink is limited at the moment.

Yogurt, low fat yogurt, and fat-free yogurt contain at least 3.25% milk fat, between 0.5% and 2% milk fat, and less than 0.5% milk fat, respectively.

Plain low fat yogurt and plain low fat kefir have similar nutritional values. The table below shows these values per 100 grams (g) of the product:

Both products also contain a wide range of vitamins and minerals.

There are also many different flavored products on the market that might contain high amounts of added sugars.

For example, one study that evaluated dairy products including kefir and yogurt in Poland found that 71% of products exceeded the permissible sugar content set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Ready-to-eat kefir and yogurt are widely available in supermarkets. People with a lactose intolerance and those who wish to avoid dairy can try an alternative made with soy, coconut, or oats.

Some people who are intolerant to lactose are often able to consume fermented dairy products such as yogurt and kefir safely. This is because the process of fermentation reduces the lactose content.

A person can make their own yogurt or kefir at home using starter cultures. There are many sources and suppliers available online.

Once a person has fermented the milk or other liquid using kefir grains, they strain it and remove the grains. They can then use them again to start the next batch. This can be a cost effective way of maintaining a supply of kefir.

People can eat or drink kefir and yogurt as it is. They can also add the products to smoothies or breakfast cereals. It is vital not to heat kefir or yogurt, as this process can destroy the beneficial bacteria.

People should always keep fermented dairy products in the fridge and not use them after the expiry date on the packaging.

Fermented foods such as kefir and yogurt contain high levels of a substance called histamine.

Some people are intolerant to histamine and can experience symptoms such as:

If a person knows that they are intolerant to histamine, or if they have any of the symptoms of intolerance, it may be best for them to avoid yogurt and kefir.

Some people can experience gas and bloating when they first consume foods that contain probiotics. These tend to subside once the persons gut gets used to the new foods. It can help to introduce these foods gradually.

Fermented foods may have an effect on the immune system, so people who are taking immune-modulating drugs and those who have compromised immune systems should speak to a doctor before trying new products.

Sometimes, fermented foods are responsible for outbreaks of food poisoning. According to the authors of one 2019 review, manufacturers can help prevent these outbreaks by ensuring the products acidity.

Kefir and yogurt can be healthful additions to a persons diet. Kefir may have more health benefits than yogurt due to the wider variety of bacteria and yeasts it contains.

People have the choice of buying convenient products in stores or making their own kefir or yogurt at home, which can be rewarding and more cost effective.

Over time, the production of yogurt and other cultured dairy foods has evolved from basic procedures to more controlled processes. Advances in scientific understanding of bacteria and the human microbiome mean that companies can develop new products to benefit peoples health.

A person who is trying fermented foods for the first time should do so gradually to decrease the risk of any side effects.

People with a health condition and those taking immune-modulating medication should speak to a doctor first.
