Gift-giving is a big deal this time of year.

To findthe perfect gift, Americans will spend about 15 hours shopping. Women will doabout twice as much as men. And theyll shell out about $1 trillion on gifts.

Whileretailers relish the holiday shopping season as a time when consumers opentheir purses or wallets, for many consumersespecially those who do not likeshoppingthese days are filled with dread. They mark moments when shoppers clogmalls, web sites become overloaded and delivery trucks block streets. Theentire process generates untold amounts of stress and anxiety.

Onesource of stress is just how much to spend on gifts. Spending too much can putyou in financial distress. Spending too little may make you look cheap.

How doyou decide whats the right amount to spend on gifts?

As an economist,I study holidays and gift giving because a large fraction of retail shopping isdriven by seasonal events like Black Friday, Cyber Monday and SuperSaturdayalso and more appropriately known as Panic Saturdaywhich is the lastSaturday before Christmas.

Gift-giving isstressful because nobody wants to buy what they think is a perfect gift only todiscover it is a dud. The long lines of people returning items after theholidays seem evidence enough for that.

Thishas led some economists to argue theres a dead weight loss to Christmaspresents that destroys as much as a third of their actual value. A 2018 studyestimated Americans spend $13 billion a year on unwanted gifts. Other economists, however, have resisted thisScrooge-like view of gift-giving and point to evidence that a present canactually have more value to the recipient than the price the giver paid. Inother words, a gift, even when technically unwanted, could have more valuesimply because someone else bought it for you.

SO ifyoure dead set on buying some gifts, how much should you budget for it?

Sincegifting is a social act, it makes sense to consider how much other peopletypically spend.

Thereare a number of surveys run each year that ask people during the fall toestimate what they plan on spending for holiday gifts. The National RetailFederations annual survey of holiday spending estimates the typical Americanwill spend $659 on gifts for family, friends and coworkers in 2019. On the highend, Gallup puts the average at $942, with more than a third of respondentsexpecting to spend over $1,000 on gifts.

Butthese figures arent that helpful for an individual since $659 means somethingdifferent to someone making $40,000 a year versus $200,000.

Thatswhere the Consumer Expenditure Survey comes in. Its a large survey run by theBureau of Labor Statistics that tracks the spending habits of 12,000 to 15,000families each year. The government uses the survey to determine the cost ofliving and inflation rates for the typical family.

Thesurvey follows gift-giving very precisely. It has categories for common holidaypresents like electronics, books and clothes, as well as gifts that typicallyarent associated with the season, such as housing and transportation.

Afterremoving these non-holiday gifts, the typical US family spends about 1 percentof its annual take-home pay on gifts. So whatever you earn, you could multiplyit by 1 percent to get a figure that is in the ballpark of what the averageAmerican spendsbut wont break the bank.

WHILEcalculating a gift budget is one way to take the stress out of how much tospend on gifts, my family has another: Only give gifts to children.

Epilepsy is a metabolic disease, and one theory is that the keto diet works by altering a person's metabolism.

Neurons, or hyperexcitable nerve cells, in the brain may contribute to the onset of seizures. The keto diet leads to metabolic changes in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid, and these changes, along with other factors, may decrease the excitability of neurons. This could have a stabilizing effect on seizures, according to experts.

The keto diet can take time to have an effect. In order to see the benefits, people should continue with it for at least 3 months after reaching ketosis.

It is very important that a healthcare professional monitors anyone using a keto diet for treatment. They can ensure that the diet is having safe effects and that the person's body is really going into ketosis.

State of the US pet food and treat industry, 2019 – Pet Food Processing

In the big picture, the US pet food and treat industry continued to grow in 2019. That growth has garnered the attention of investors and some large human food manufacturing companies. Both General Mills with the acquisition of Blue Buffalo and J.M. Smucker Company with the acquisitions of Big Heart Pet Brands and Ainsworth Pet Nutrition are now embracing food and treats for pets as key business pillars delivering the growth required by their investors.

Pet food and treat brands are chasing consumer preferences of matching their own personal food philosophies with what they feed their pets, and brands are throwing tradition out the window and distributing to any and all channels in order to meet pet owners where they prefer to shop.

Additionally, the regulatory environment over the past 10 years has brought US pet food processing standards in line with human food manufacturing, increasing the pressure for pet food manufacturers to check and check again that their products can be made safely, consistently and efficiently.

All in all, global human food companies and investors holding more stake in the pet food market, an emerging omnichannel landscape, consumer-driven ingredient and formulation trends and regulatory challenges have proven that with growth comes growing pains, and pet food and treat brands are having to fine-tune their processes and products more than ever to stay competitive.

Traditional retail lines are becoming increasingly blurred in the US pet food and treat market with the rise of e-commerce and a shift among well-known premium brands, such as Blue Buffalo, from pet specialty to FDM channels.

Changing channels

With Blue Buffalo leading the pack, pet food and treat brands have strayed from their traditional sales channels either pet specialty, Food, Drug and Mass (FDM), or internet retailers to unapologetically meet customers where they shop.

Were focused on significantly expanding Blues availability so that pet parents can get the Blue products they want anywhere they shop for pet food, said Billy Bishop, Blue Buffalos founder and brand adviser, during General Mill Inc.s Sept. 18 earnings call covering the first quarter of its fiscal 2020 year. Minneapolis-based General Mills acquired Blue Buffalo in 2018.Pet food was a major focal point for the first time at PROCESS EXPO 2019, where a live production line churned out minimally processed kibble bites for freeze-drying or dehydration.

So far, this approach seems to be working for the super-premium brand. Blue Buffalo sales topped $368 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2020 and were up 7% from year-ago sales. General Mills said retail sales for FDM customers who have carried Blue Buffalo for more than 12 months were up 50% versus last year. E-commerce sales for the pet food brand were up more than 20% in the first quarter as well, according to the company, which expects e-commerce growth to continue at 8% to 10% throughout fiscal 2020.

Unfortunately, as the company shifts focus toward FDM, Blue Buffalo sales in the pet specialty channel declined at a double-digit rate. To repair relationships with pet specialty customers, General Mills has launched a new super premium line, Carnivora, which will be sold exclusively in the pet specialty retail space. As brands are widening their product lines to offer exclusivity to certain channels, those channels are creating brands of their own.

High-end house brands

Until recently, independent pet specialty stores traditionally carried higher priced brands and the lower priced options were available in mass retail outlets. Those lines have begun to blur in the pet food and treat market. Traditional barriers are fading away and premium claims, such as high protein, grain-free and all-natural diets, continue to drive sales.

An increasingly wide variety of premium pet foods have become available through various mass and e-commerce channels, speeding up the mass premiumization of the market, according to Packaged Facts annual report, Pet Food in the U.S., 14th Edition.

House brands have dominated the low end of the pet food market for years, even in pet specialty stores, but this was before premium and super-premium products took over FDM retailer shelves, said Steve Mills, senior vice-president, customer brands and co-manufacturing at American Nutrition Inc.

Now that more premium and super-premium products are migrating from pet specialty to FDM shelves, it creates the opportunity for FDM retailers to create similar brand offerings of their own, Mills said. These new house brand pet foods have become top-shelf competitors and are attracting consumers with premium ingredients, functional claims and lower price points than top premium brands.

Jared Koerten, an analyst covering packaged foods for Euromonitor International, said millennials who favor both premium and value are helping drive this trend. Private label products are rising in the ranks in pet care, with retailers launching their own brands across all channels and categories. According to the Private Label Manufacturers Association, New York, store brands market penetration set all-time records in 2018, increasing dollar share and unit share at double-digit rates.

Novel proteinsAside from the use of alternative proteins such as nutritional yeast, cultured animal meat or plant-based substitutes some brands, like Phelps Pet Products, are embracing exotic animal proteins such as alligator, quail and wild boar for pet treats and food.

Good-for-the-planet brand claims seem to dominate the sustainability story of pet food, and novel proteins are nothing to bark at. Last October, Wild Earth, Inc., Berkeley, Calif., launched a dog treat line made with cultured koji (Aspergillus oryzae), an ancient Asian protein and member of the fungi kingdom containing all 10 amino acids essential for dogs. Then, in August 2019, the company launched a meatless complete-and-balanced diet for dogs that utilizes yeast protein as a main ingredient and source of protein.

In March 2019, Because Animals, Philadelphia, announced the development of pet treats containing lab-cultured meat a meat-alternative protein made from mice cells. The company, which already offers probiotic supplements for cats and dogs, released its first human-grade dog treat made with nutritional yeast in December 2019 and said it plans to debut a cultured mouse meat cat treat in early 2021.

Jiminys, a Berkeley, Calif.-based pet treat manufacturer using crickets as a sustainable source of protein, launched two complete-and-balanced insect-protein dog foods. Good Grub includes insect protein powder, while Cricket Crave includes cricket protein powder. Montreal-based dog food company Wilder Harrier offers an insect protein-based pet diet as well. Most of the diets protein comes from the inclusion of black soldier fly powder and oil, which is supplied from Canadian insect-rearing facilities.

As the market is introduced to the promise of new ingredients for pet diets, whether they are derived from yeast, lab-grown meats or insects, the pet food and treat industry is sticking to one important tradition: growth.

History of growth

For more than 10 years, the industry has delivered growth that keeps investors tails wagging. The American Pet Products Association (APPA), based in Stamford, Conn., said pet food has grown year over year since 2007 by at least 3.7% and as much as 10.7%.

Freshpet Inc. continued to see impressive growth in 2019, with other fresh, home-cooked style and minimally processed brands gaining traction with investors and consumers looking for pet food that more closely resembles their own diets.Although dry kibble still dominates the US pet food market with 72% of sales, according to consumer goods market research firm Packaged Facts, the increased focus on pet wellness has pet owners feeding a broader range of products to their pets.

While dollar sales for dog food continue to trump cat food sales, food for felines has grown and is projected by Packaged Facts to continue growing at a higher rate than dog food. In 2020, cat food sales are projected to grow 3.2% to $9.6 billion, while dog food sales are expected to grow 2.5% but still lead the pack with $19.2 billion. According to Euromonitor, the growth in global cat treatsales led the pack with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9% between 2013 and 2018, followed by dog treats with a 5% CAGR during the same period.

Many new pet food formats, such as dehydrated or freeze-dried, are fetching premium prices, making them an attractive brand extension option. A 100% freeze-dried kibble recipe on average costs 1,587% more per pound than traditional dry kibble, according to Packaged Facts, with 100% freeze-dried costing an average of $32.55 per lb. and dry kibble averaging $1.93 per lb.

Pet food and treats with functional claims that promise to support joints, skin and coat health, endurance and digestion, just to name a few, are gaining in popularity. Mirroring the human food market, products containing hemp, including cannabidiol (CBD), are exploding and far outpacing the regulatory agencies policies on these ingredients just another area where this industry is breaking the rules.

As more traditionally premium and super-premium brands take an omnichannel approach, retailers both traditional and online are competing with house brands for shelf space or online position. Novel ingredients are grabbing the headlines, processors are learning how to navigate an increasingly complex market, and top brands are steering their products into sales success.

Competing with private label brands for shelf space or online position is just one more obstacle top pet food and treat companies must overcome in the modern market. Fortunately, US pet food manufacturers are in a strong position, owning nearly half of the global market. CHENNAI: Its that time of the year when the members of O2 Health Studio the health division of Savera Hotel gear up for their annual Weight Loss Challenge programme. A month full of a well-balanced diet, rigorous workout and health goals the result is confidence, a self-esteem boost and a toned physique.

This is the sixth year were having this challenge. Its designed to make people active, eat better, and have fun safely and scientifically. This weight-loss challenge will help people reach their health goals, stay focused and motivated along with physical activities and weight-loss nutrition. What is unique to this programme is powerful team-building exercises. Fitness is a common resolution taken for New Year. We wanted our patrons to make the most out of this programme, said Nina Reddy, joint managing director of Savera Hotel and founder of O2 Health Studio.

Around 180 people participated. The Weight Loss Challenge started on November 18 at all outlets of O2 Health studio Ashok Nagar, Besant Nagar, Nungambakkam and OMR. A small group was formed with eight participants under each fitness trainer and they guide the participants towards their goal. A weekly review was regularly done. The winners were announced on Sunday at the end of the fourth week of their final assessment.

Siva Gurunathan won the mens category by losing 17 kg. Mekala and Aishwarya won in the womens category by losing 11 kg, each. The total weight lost by all the participants was 427 kg. Enjoying the sweet success of hard work, Siva, a software engineer said, It was a month full of dedication. I gave up on many cravings and indulged in healthy eating and exercises. I worked out four hours a day and went for work directly from the gym. I felt detoxed and light at the end of the programme. Of course, people criticised me and did not believe that it was possible to lose weight by staying focussed. I kept away from social media and put all my energy and anger in workouts. I feel confident about my body image now.Fitness trainers spoke about healthy habits and the benefits of working out to spread awareness. People who attended the event went home taking inspiration from the participants.

Athough eliminating is the hardest goodbye of all, low-carb diets have been the rage for quite some time now. There are a few different plans you can follow. Keto is a major one thats yielding quick, drastic weight-loss results for tons of people, and Paleo is another trendy plan. And then there are the tried-and-true low-carb classics, like the Atkins diet (this might be the first time youve heard that one in a while).

Both keto and Atkins are actually pretty similar when it comes to the amount of macronutrients (fat, carbs, protein) you should be consuming day to day, but what are the actual differences between the twoand which would be a better fit, nutritionally?

Of course you could just make your choice based on how much pasta youre able to eat, but nutrition experts do believe that one is a little bit better than the other for a few reasons. Two dietitiansNatalie Rizzo, MS, RD, a New York City-based registered dietitian, and Susan Piergeorge, MS, RDN, nutrition education manager for Rainbow Light and Natural Vitality CALMgive the lowdown on these high-fat, high-protein, low-carb eating styles. Their verdict, ahead.

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-protein, and low-carbohydrate diet that was originally developed to treat epilepsy, explains Piergeorge. Thats right, historically, it wasnt prescribed for extreme weight loss but to reduce blood sugaryou can hardly have any sugar on the dietwhich during the 1920s was thought to lower the risk of seizures. Now, the diet is a huge trend for weight loss as well as treating type 2 diabetes, Piergeorge adds.

Heres the basic formula: Fat accounts for 70 to 95 percent of the keto diet, while protein makes up 5 to 20 percent, and carbohydrates just 5 to 10 percent of what youre eating. It tends to bring on dramatic weight loss because youre consuming less than 50 grams of carbs a day on keto, ideally.

At this ratio, the body starts to burn fat. Once the bodys glucose stores become depleted, ketone bodies are produced (these are products of fatty acid oxidation in the liver) and provide an alternate source of energy, Piergeorge explains. Basically, fat, instead of sugar from carbs, becomes your bodys main energy sourceand when you're burning fat, you lose weight.

Once you read this, you may be tempted to devour an entire charcuterie platter. But the focus really is on healthy fats and lean meats, and supplementing those with fruits and vegetables in moderate amounts, since those are technically considered carbs.

There are some potential health benefits you could experience by going keto. At the same time, the diet can have side effects, as explained below.

Well, if youre trying to lose weight and have tried many other avenues to do so, eating keto may be effective. If youre diabetic or pre-diabetic, it may also help lower your blood sugar since youre cutting out all that sugar.

And, Rizzo adds, it could be a fit for some athletes, too. Certain elements of the keto diet, like the emphasis on healthy fats and protein, is a good recommendation for active individuals who put a lot of wear and tear on their muscles and need more calories, Rizzo says. You have to make sure the fats you choose are healthy, omega-3-rich fats instead of saturated fats, and that you're choosing lean sources of protein.

Remember that before making a major lifestyle change, though, its best to check it out with your medical professional first. You dont want to end up feeling worse after making this dietary switch instead of better.

Though the Atkins diet basically peaked in the late 90s (didnt we all?), it was actually developed much earlier by Robert C. Atkins, a doctor who published his first book, Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution, in 1972, and then his most popular bestseller, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, in 1995. Dr. Atkins intended on it being a way to cut carbs, of course, and reduce high blood pressure.

Basically, with Atkins, you generally have two paths you can choose from: Atkins 20 and Atkins 40, based on the grams of carbs you should be eating per day. Its also low in carbs, higher in fat, and higher in protein, which ideally should prompt the body to burn fat.

If youre trying to shave off more than 40 pounds, youd eat about 60 to 70 percent fat, 20 to 30 percent protein, and 5 to 10 percent carbs on Atkins 20 (youre allowed 20 grams of carbs a day), Rizzo explains.

If you would like to lose less than 40 pounds, go with Atkins 40. It consists of 55 to 65 percent fat, 20 to 30 percent protein, and 10 to 15 percent carbs. Youre allowed 40 grams of carbs per day, which is a bit easier when youre tallying up macros. Theres also Atkins 100, which is a slightly simpler plan that allows for 100 grams of carbs per day.

Like keto, Atkins focuses on lean protein, as well as healthy fats. Depending on the plan individuals follow, the plan emphasizes consuming protein at least three times per day in four to six ounce portions including meat, seafood, poultry and eggs, Piergeorge explains. I wouldnt necessarily recommend the keto diet because it has such a high percentage of fat and a low percentage of carbs. If she *had* to choose between these two highly restrictive eating regimens, shed choose Atkins because it allows for more carbs (in the form of fruits, veggies, and whole grains) and ultimately more leeway in your eating and more balance in your diet.

Atkins also gives you more wiggle room because you can choose the 20, 40, or 100 option for allotment of grams of carbs per day. That way, you can introduce a little more pasta into the mix if thats how you want to roll.

When will the Government Street Project be completed?

"It's on schedule for late 2020, weather dependent and if there are no unforeseen delays," says Rodney Mallett, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation and Development.

The project involves reducing a 4.2-mile stretch of Government Street from four lanes to three, with one lane in each direction and a center turn lane from East Boulevard to Lobdell Avenue. The most heavily trafficked stretch from North Foster Drive to Jefferson Highway will keep two eastbound lanes, have one westbound lane and include either a left turn lane or a two-way left turn lane.

The project will also substitute a roundabout for the traffic lights at the Government Street, Lobdell Avenue and Independence Park intersection, and add sidewalks and bike paths to Government Street.

The project will cost $11.7 million: Federal safety funds of $5.4 million; city-parish road transfer credits of $4.2 million; state funding of $1.1 million; and $1 million through the Americans with Disabilities Act.

With the almost constant flow of traffic on Bluebonnet Boulevard, shouldn't there be a traffic light in front of the Post Office and the Surgical Speciality Center? This is a dangerous intersection with too many things going on. In addition to cars exiting the Center and the Post Office, there are cars turning left and making U-turns. No U-turns are allowed at the less busy intersections a block or so up and down. Why here at this very busy spot? Is there any solution planned to ease this traffic problem?

P.S. U-turns shouldn't be allowed at the light on Bluebonnet and North Oak Hills either.

Brendan Rush, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation and Development, says, "Our Traffic Engineering Section has looked at this location. Neither the Post Office nor the Surgical Specialty Center has the a volume of cars requiring the installation of a traffic signal at this intersection.

"As for the U-turn issue, generally U-turns are allowed at intersections and median openings where left turn lanes are present and the turn is not hindered by geometry nor a competing signalized protected movement."

Meanwhile, Ingolf Partenheimer, chief traffic engineer for the city-parish, says they'll take another look at the matter once that section of Bluebonnet comer under the control of the city-parish. "The switch-over is imminent," he says.

10 Health Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting, Backed By Science – Women’s Health

ICYMI, fasting diets basically dominated 2019, turning phrases like eating windows and 5:2 versus 16:8 into normal parts of everyday conversation. As far as diets go, fasting looks to be one of the more long-lasting trends: it technically isnt a diet at all, focusing less on overall caloric intake and more on restricting your eating to specific windows of time each day. For the most part, thats just common senseand the health benefits can be huge if youre accustomed to eating all day (and night) long.

Since there are so many different fasting schedules to choose from, its probably worth checking out the actual benefits before you wade in to figure out which option is right for you. Until recently, there wasnt much research to work from; most of the studies were done on animals or small sample populations, making the purported benefits largely anecdotal.

But as fasting becomes more popular, more research is emergingand with it, the list of possible advantages seems to be growing. Here are 10 potential benefits to following your fasting schedule of choice.

Lets start with the biggie: Can a fasting diet really help you lose weight? It dependson everything from the type of fasting youre doing to the research being considered. Lauren Harris-Pincus, MS, RDN, author of The Protein-Packed Breakfast Club, says that some research has shown no real difference in weight loss between intermittent fasting and typical calorie-restricted diets. But newer studies are suggesting that earlier eating windows (like from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.) can assist with weight loss.

For example, Harris-Pincus points to a 2013 study in Obesity demonstrating that people who consumed a certain amount of calories eating a larger breakfast and smaller dinner lost two-and-a-half times as much weight in 12 weeks than people who ate the same exact calories but in reverse (with a smaller breakfast and larger dinner).

Obviously more research is needed to draw concrete conclusions about how and why fasting helps with weight loss (for any reason other than the fact that you might be eating fewer calories). Ultimately, we need to create a calorie deficit to lose weight, but it's not as simple as calories in versus calories out, Harris-Pincus explains, suggesting that the time of day you eat (or dont) may contribute to weight loss when combined with less calorie consumption overall.

New Jersey-based dietitian Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, author of 2 Day Diabetes Diet, says that in some studies intermittent fasting has been found to reduce blood sugar levels and reduce insulin resistance, which can be very beneficial to those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The results of a 2018 study published in Cell Metabolism are notable here: Researchers found that even without weight loss, early time-restricted fasting increased insulin sensitivity in men with prediabetes. (Most other similar studies cant definitively say whether insulin sensitivity improves because of the fasting schedule itself, or because most people lose weight when they fast, which also improves insulin sensitivity.)

Okay, the connection between fasting and your body health looks promising so far...but what about your brain health? Palinski-Wade notes that some animal studies have shown intermittent fasting to be protective to the brain by improving its function and structure, like in this 2018 study in Experimental Biology and Medicine, which suggests fasting may protect against Alzheimers disease by reducing the incidence of memory loss.

Obviously, more research is needed to see if this is also true in humans (because you're not a mouse, right?!)but at some point in the future we may see those results apply more broadly. TBD.

One of the reasons fasting can lead to weight loss is because youre eating during daytime hours, e.g., when your body naturally wants to consume calories.

When we eat according to our circadian rhythmmeaning we consume energy during our active hours of the day when the sun is up and eat less in the eveningwe metabolize our food better and see improvements in blood sugar and lipids including cholesterol and triglycerides, explains Harris-Pincus.

5:2 fasting, in particular, may improve cholesterol levels. As WH previously reported, a 2018 study showed that people who followed a 5:2 diet had a lower risk of heart disease than people who dieted by counting calories.

The science here is still emerging, but researchers have been studying the effects of food intake on sleep for years. Some research has shown that eating late at night can disrupt sleep or cause sleep disturbances, though sample sizes are usually pretty small.

Theres also not a lot of direct evidence that fastinginstead of eatingbefore the nighttime hours can have the opposite effect, but it does make sense. Plus, one study from 2003 found that a week of fasting resulted in less sleep arousals (though only 15 people were tracked and that study is fairly old, obviously).

At the root of many of fastings health benefits is a reduction in inflammation, and thats a connection being studied pretty closely by experts interested in the relationship between fasting and overall health.

In 2019, researchers at Mount Sinai found that intermittent-fasting cycles lasting less than 24 hours reduced the number of pro-inflammatory monocytes in the blood. High levels of monocytes have been associated with some chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

Similarly, the Yale School of Medicine studied the effects of fasting and diets on the bodys macrophages, or inflammatory immune cells, and found that low-carb dieting, fasting, or high-intensity exercise may help to reduce that kind of inflammatory response.

Ever reach for a candy bar or bag of chips out of habit without even realizing what youre doing? Thats called mindless eating, and most of us do it to some extent. But do it often enough, and it can cause you to fall pretty out of step with your bodys hunger cues.

Many people eat emotionally, particularly at night when it's easy to sit in front of the TV and mindlessly consume extra calories, says Harris-Pincus. But fasting diets, which force you to establish clear eating windows, eliminate this absent-minded noshing and can help you take in fewer overall calories.

In the last two years, proponents of fasting have claimed that restricting caloric intake for even a short period of time can reset your immune system, giving it a much needed power boost.

This theory was born out of a University of Southern California study on both mice and humans, which suggested that fasting for 72 hours could allow your body to flush out damaged immune cells and regenerate new, healthier cells primed to help the body fight toxins. (The effects of fasting on patients undergoing chemotherapy were examined in this particular study.)

At this point, the connection hasnt been well-studied. But a little fasting probably cant hurt your immune system, either.

Can spending some of your week fasting actually add years to your life? Its a lofty claim and it hasnt been studied carefully enough in humans yet, but a 2019 study in Cell Metabolism found that alternate day fasting, specifically, did improve some of the more common markers of aginglike cardio health and fat-to-lean ratioin a small sample of healthy, non-obese people.

Elsewhere, the National Institute on Aging has reported that male mice that ate less frequent meals lived longer compared to mice that ate more frequently, with fewer liver diseases and metabolic disorders.

Weve known for a long time that what you eat can affect your skin health. The American Academy of Dermatology confirms that certain foods, like milk, white bread, and sugary snacks or beverages, can increase acne by spiking your blood sugar.

But can the time of day you eat affect your skin health, too? Maybe...but right now, the evidence is mostly anecdotal, based on what we know about the combined factors that can cause acne, like inflammation, high levels of insulin, and lack of restorative beauty sleep. Because fasting may help with some of these root causes of acne, it couldin theorybe a solution to common skin issues. But more research is needed here, too.

When Gibson Put the ES-350 on a Diet – Premier Guitar

Gibson produced the original short scale ES-350TDN from 1955 to 1963, and then made a full-scale version from 77 to 81. The companion amp is a 1961 Gibson GA-20T Ranger.

After running into session guitarists Hank Garland and Billy Byrd at a Nashville disc jockey convention in 1955, Gibson developed a line of thin-bodied electric guitars using input from the two musicians. The guitars were marketed to players who wanted a smaller, more comfortable instrument, without the weight of a solidbody.

TDN, by the way, stands for thinline, double-pickup, neutral finish.

Gibsons initial thinline series of the mid 50s was made up of three guitars: the Byrdland, the mid-priced ES-350T, and the economy ES-225T. The high-end Byrdland was designed with contributions from Garland and Byrd, and its handle was obviously a combination of the two artists last names. It was meant to be a thin L-5 CES (at 2 1/4" thick) with a shorter 23 1/2" scale neck, instead of the L-5s 25 1/2" scale.

Humbuckers replaced the ES-350TDNs initial double-P-90 configuration in 1957, but the hardware, including the tailpiece with the guitars model number onboard, remained the same.

The ES-350T, which slimmed down the full-bodied ES-350, used the Byrdlands innovative measurements while retaining many of the 350s cosmetic and structural features. With its laminated maple top, back, and sides, the guitar was intended to be a more affordable version of the Byrdland, priced $155 cheaper in its debut year. The 1962 Gibson catalog describes other details of the ES-350T: Matching the all-around excellence of Gibson performance, this distinctive instrument has a thin, narrow, short-scale neck. The choice of many professionals who acclaim these design features, which permit the use of many chords previously beyond reach. Beautifully finished arched top and back of highly figured curly maple with matching curly maple rims, ivoroid binding, and gold-plated metal parts.

The figured maple on this guitars back shows zero damage from belt rash or other blemishes, adding to its charisma.

The nicely figured, natural finish 1963 ES-350TDN featured this month has all the characteristics of the final edition of the model, before its discontinuation that year. (A full-scale version was reissued in 1978.) These include gold hardware, two humbucking pickups (which replaced P-90s as standard-issue in 1957), a deep Florentine cutaway (which replaced the rounded Venetian-style cut in 1961), a 3-piece maple neck (which replaced the original 2-piece in mid-1962), a rosewood fretboard with split parallelogram markers, and a crown-inlayed headstock. TDN, by the way, stands for thinline, double-pickup, neutral finish.

Note the GA-20T Rangers voicing dial, to the left of the headstock. Its a glorified tone control that works this way: 1, in the center, is neutral, while 5, on the left, is darkest and 5 on the right is brightest.

The 1962 Gibson price list has the natural finish ES-350T at $500. A 603 Faultless, plush-lined case was an extra $56. The current value for one in excellent, all-original condition is $7,500. The amp is a 1961 Gibson GA-20T Ranger. Two 6V6 power tubes push 16 watts through a Jensen P12R speaker. This tweed covered amp has five control knobs. The voicing dial controls the tone (1, in the center, is neutral, while 5, on the left, is darkest and 5 on the right is brightest), the volume 1 knob works for the channel with no tremolo, while volume 2 controls the tremolo channel. And, of course, depth regulates how strong the tremolo signal is and frequency manages the speed of the tremolo. The original price was $169.50. The current value is $1,000.

FROM kombucha to hemp seeds - 2019 was full of weird and wonderful diet trends.

And it seems as though 2020 isn't going to be any different with droves of trendy and alternative foods emerging.

Helen Bond, registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association, has revealed there will be a continued focus on plant-based food.

And things like freekeh, banana flour and turmeric are bound to fill menus and plates when the new year comes round.

Here, she takes us through each of the key diet trends she predicts will take 2020 by storm...

Lesser known grains such as freekeh and teff are set to fill people's plates in 2020 - as slimmers find other ways to replace carby-food.

Helen says: "Theres never been a trendier way to fill the healthy carb spot on your plate than with unusual grains.

"People will go wild with rice and nutrient-packed grains like freekeh, barley, spelt, bulgar wheat, quinoa, wholewheat couscous, teff, and buckwheat."

Move over kale, nudge over spinach, this'cabbage turnip' is set to become the new green leafy veg of 2020.

It looks something like a Sputnik in vegetable form and the mild, sweet flavour is somewhere between a turnip and a waterchestnut, with a crisp, crunchy texture.

Helen says: "Full of vitamin C and gut healthy fibre and hugely versatile to add to your menu - you can steam kohlrabi, boil it, chop it into a stir-fry or eat it raw grated in a salad."

There is set to be a drive for innovative plant-based replacements for grains and an increased interest in alternative flours made from fruit and veg.

In particular, Helen says to look out for banana flour and coconut flour in supermarkets.

She adds: "The organic movement isnt slowing down, and in 2020 increasing numbers of health-conscious consumers will continue to rebuff food and drink that contains too many additives, and instead embrace natural ingredients and premium organic products."

Cauliflower had a good year this year with cauliflower pizza bases and steaks, and cauli rice, but next year, its all about Caulini.

Caulilinis stalks are more tender and, as a whole, tastes sweeter than your typical cauliflower.

Helen says: "Sweet and slightly nutty in flavour and visually appealing on your plate, as its long stem turns bright green when cooked, while the florets stay light."

There has been a significant rise in health conscious millennials, with a study recently revealing they consume just five units of alcohol a week.

This means there will be more and more non-alcoholic drinks introduced into the market.

Helen says: "Non-alcohol drinks are set to generate some serious thirst in 2020, with wellness-obsessed millennials ditching boozy nights and enjoying more non-alcoholic spirits, cocktails and sparkling quenchers with interesting flavours, like kombucha and botanical mixers."

In the past two years, the UK has launched more vegan products than any other nation - and this is set to continue well into 2020.

"Vegetarian and vegan are likely to maintain their position as the biggest nutrition buzzwords next year", Helen says.

"People will be tapping into in-vogue plant-based choices, such as meat-free burgers and sausages, bean casseroles, lentil shepherds pie, mushroom bolognaise and vegetable curries."

There are growing concerns about the impact of food miles on the environment.

This means people will be looking for food that has come from a nearby farmer, fishmonger, or any other fresh produce creator.

Helen says: "Growing concerns about the impact of food miles on the environment means that eco-conscious diners now want localism to their food with dishes created with ingredients sourced locally, without packaging and taking advantage of seasonal produce."

More and more people will be embracing plant-based protein in 2020 - meaning supermarkets will be full of pulses.

Helen says: "Edible seeds that grow in a pod andinclude, among others, lentils, baked beans, chick peas, black eyed peas, red kidney beans and fava beans are what its all about.

"Theyre little nutrient powerhouses that count as one of your five-a-day, pack a hearty fibre punch, and are friendly on the planet."

Buddha bowls colourful bowls usually composed of vegetables, healthy grains, and protein are one of2020's top emerging food trends.

"Hearty, healthy, moreish, packed with nutrients and oh-so-hip, Buddha bowls are making lunchtime salads exciting again", Helen says.

"Essentially made from colourful veggies, lean protein, whole grains, and a tasty sauce, but theyre endlessly customisable."

Turmeric is the flavour of the moment - with even Starbucks launching its own drink with the spice in it recently.

It's a spice in Indian food taken from the plants underground stems and it's anti-inflammatory properties are said to reduce the risk of cancer, treat brain disorders, improve memory and boost immune systems.

And shelves are set to be brimming with it in 2020 - with droves of celebrities and health experts touting it.
