Florida couple starved toddler with vegan diet: Grand jury – CrimeOnline

Posted: December 21, 2019 at 10:44 pm

A vegan couple in Florida were formally charged this week with first degree murder charges in the death of their 18-month-old son, who died of extreme malnutrition in September, weighing only 17 pounds.

Ryan Patrick OLeary, 30, and Sheila OLeary, 35, were also indicted in Lee county for aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter, child abuse, and two counts of child neglect, the Fort Myers News-Press reported.

The OLearys told investigators their children eat a raw food diet which largely consists of mangoes, rambutans, bananas, and avocados, and that the toddler hadnt eaten in a week and was only breastfeeding.

The indictment includes three other children the couples surviving children, ages 3 and 5, and Sheila OLearys daughter with a different father, age 11 State Attorney Amira Fox said.

The evidence and crime scene in this case are gut-wrenching. These are images as a mother and state attorney I will not be able to forget, Fox said at a news conference.

Citing a Cape Coral probable cause statement, the News-Press reported that an autopsy confirmed that the toddler died from complications of malnutrition, including microsteatosis of the liver an abnormal retention of fat in cells and slight swelling his of hands, feet, and lower legs.

Sheila OLeary called for help on September 27 after finding her son unresponsive and cold at the couples Cape Coral home. The toddler was pronounced dead at the scene, as CrimeOnline previously reported.

The parents told investigators they thought the boy was not eating because he was teething.

The night before his death, Sheila OLeary reportedly told investigators she noticed her son was having difficulty breathing while breastfeeding him. The couple allegedly went to sleep instead of getting their ailing son medical attention. The mother also said that her deceased son was born at home and had never seen a doctor. While she claimed her other children were homeschooled, police determined that they were not enrolled in an approved program.

The couples two surviving children were reportedly also severely malnourished. The older child reportedly appeared to be the healthiest of the three children. Police wrote in their report that the girl stays with her biological father for two weeks every couple of months, possibly explaining her healthier appearance. According to the News-Press, the girl was placed in her biological fathers custody in 2009 because she failed to thrive in Sheila OLearys care.

The two younger children were extremely small for their age and were a pale, yellowish color, the police report said, according to the Cape Coral Daily Breeze, which said one of the children also had blackened teeth indicating dental decay.

The OLearys are scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Weight loss: This simple drink can help burn fat fast – when should you have it? – Express

Posted: December 21, 2019 at 10:43 pm

Many weight loss diet plans require slimmers to drastically cut food groups from their diet.

However, they could actually see better results if they are less restrictive, Krissy Cela, founder of Tone & Sculpt app, told Express.co.uk.

She explained: Say no to restrictions! I can't stress to you enough how many people I have seen trying a quick fix restrictive diet plan that is not maintainable, they end up just putting on more weight than they wanted to lose in the first place.

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, your diet needs to work around the foods you actually enjoy and your lifestyle.

Instead of only focusing on what they eat, dieters should have a look at what they drink.

Woman claims she eats sand as a part of her everyday diet: ‘I’ve felt perfectly fine’ – AOL

Posted: December 21, 2019 at 10:43 pm

Why have a picnic on the beach when you could have a picnic of the beach, instead?

Kusma Vati, an80-year-old from Varanasi, India, says she has included sand and gravel in her diet every day for the last six decades.

In fact, the elderly woman claims the secret to her good health lies in herrather unorthodox eating habits.

"I have been eating sand and gravel for around 63 years now," she said, according to Yahoo News UK. "I love eating them and I don'tthink they have any harmful effects."

Vati says shefirst began consuming sand with her daily meals when she was about 15 years old to remedy an upset stomach and has been hooked ever since with allegedly no downsides.

"I haven'tsuffered any problems in my stomach and mouth, and my teeth are absolutely fine," she claimed."If anything, its made them tougher. I can bite into the hardest stone without a problem."

"I have never seen a doctor because there has just been no need," she continued. "For as long as I can remember, I've felt perfectly fine."

Vati cleans her sand by storing it in a clay pot and allowing it ample time to dry in the sun. The rest of the sand-eating process is pretty self-explanatory.

Not everyone is supportive ofVati's diet, particularlyher grandkids, who have been urging her to quit cold turkey.

However, the elder has no plans to listen to them whatsoever.

"My grandchildren insist I get medical help to get rid of this addiction," she said. "But, I see no need for it."

From Sirtfood to Keto Ultra, What Experts Think of 2019 Top Diets – Healthline

Posted: December 21, 2019 at 10:43 pm

Share on PinterestExperts say a change in lifestyle is probably more effective than any specific diet. Getty Images

Every year, millions of people turn to the internet to research the latest diet trends.

Google has released its top trending diets of 2019 and while experts say some of them may be helpful, others are not worth the effort.

Heres how the experts weighed in on five of the top diet searches for this past year.

As the name implies, this diet limits intake to 1,200 calories a day.

The Dietary Guidelines for the United States recommend a calorie intake of between 1,600 to 2,400 each day for adult women and 2,000 to 3,000 calories every day for men.

Lauri Y. Wright, PhD, an assistant professor in public health at the University of North Florida, says for those wanting to lose weight, cutting calories is important.

Creating a calorie deficit is the key to losing weight. The body then draws on stored fat for the necessary energy needed by the body, which is seen as weight loss, she told Healthline. We caution about diets that are too restrictive because very low calorie diets can slow your metabolism permanently. Too low is generally thought of as below 1,200 calories for women and 1,500 calories for men.

Its important that those restricting calories still achieve their nutrient needs.

The diet needs to include all the essential nutrients for health, Wright said. The lower the calories, the tougher it can be to get all the protein, vitamins, and minerals necessary. We always recommend working with a registered dietitian that can plan the most healthful eating plans to meet your health goals.

Dana Hunnes, PhD, a senior dietitian at the University of California Los Angeles Medical Center, says unless a person has low calorie needs or is under the direct guidance of a medical professional, cutting calories to 1,200 a day is not sustainable in the long term.

This would definitely be considered more of a crash diet as opposed to a long-term lifestyle solution and I do not recommend it, she told Healthline. It is better to lose weight gradually over time and in a manner that is sustainable over the life time this is not that type of dietary plan and it is not enough. It would likely make your own metabolism slow down since it would not be enough calories.

One of the top diet search terms for 2019 was intermittent fasting.

In the most basic terms, there are two main versions; time restricted eating (TRE), which is eating during only an 8-hour or 10-hour period or a 5:2 approach where women eat only 500 calories split between two meals, two times a week. Men get 600, said Kristin Kirkpatrick, a registered dietitian and manager of wellness nutrition services at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute in Ohio.

The benefits are expansive, including longer life, weight loss, and chronic disease risk reduction, she told Healthline.

Hunnes says other possible positives to intermittent fasting include benefits to the gastro-intestinal system by giving it time to rest and lowering inflammation throughout the body.

But fasting isnt appropriate for everyone.

Intermittent fasting is not a good plan for pregnant women or those with certain health conditions such as diabetes, Wright said. Additionally, one study found that intermittent fasting can harm heart health. Additionally, after losing weight with intermittent fasting, the body may gain back the weight more quickly because the body viewed fasting as starvation.

Earlier this year, singer Jennifer Lopez announced she was attempting a 10-day challenge of no carbohydrates and no sugar.

Days into her diet, Lopez encouraged her followers to join her.

However, experts say some carbs are necessary.

Our brains depend on glucose derived from carbohydrates for healthy functioning as do our muscles, said Hunnes. This type of diet is not healthy. Of course, limiting or avoiding sugar is healthy, but limiting all carbohydrates is not.

Wright agrees.

Carbohydrates are critical for health. However, the problem for many people is the type and amount of carbohydrates consumed. Emphasizing complex carbohydrates such as whole grain pastas, rice, beans, vegetables, and fruit rather than simple sugars such as soda and candy is crucial, she said.

Besides energy to fuel the body, carbohydrates also provide important vitamins, minerals, and fiber, Wright added. Carbohydrates are essential and should not be eliminated from the diet. Rather, choose healthy carbohydrates and control the portions. Excessive carbohydrates can add unwanted calories and cause high blood sugars for diabetics.

Wright suggests an appropriate carbohydrate portion would be half to one cup of pasta rather than an entire plate or one-third to two-thirds of a cup of rice rather than a whole bowl.

Last year, the high fat, low carb keto diet topped Googles trending diet searches.

This year, a variation of the diet called keto ultra, which includes supplements, made the top 10 most searched diets.

The ketogenic diet is very low in carbohydrates and very high in fat, putting the body into ketosis the burning of fat instead of glucose for fuel, Wright said. The keto diet has been shown to reduce weight because with any diet that restricts entire food groups, its possible that reduced dietary variety leads to reduced calorie intake. A side effect of ketosis is decreased hunger, which also contributes to weight loss.

But the diet comes with risks.

Because carbohydrate-containing foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans are eliminated, a ketogenic diet can contribute to certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies and may negatively impact gut health, Wright said. People following a ketogenic diet have also been shown to lose muscle mass, which is especially problematic for older adults.

Hunnes argues a keto-based diet is not healthy.

I do not think this is a healthy choice since evolutionarily speaking, we thrive on glucose as our major energy source. A high-fat, high-protein diet is not healthy for us at all. I, in as strong of terms as possible, do not recommend a ketogenic diet, she said.

Both Wright and Hunnes note that the only people who could truly benefit from a keto-based diet are children who experience seizures and follow the diet under medical recommendations from their doctor.

The ketogenic diet has been shown to successfully treat severe epilepsy in infants and children under medical supervision, Wright said.

A diet popularized for its inclusion of dark chocolate and red wine was highly searched for in 2019.

The creators behind the sirtfood diet argue that sirtfoods can prevent disease and result in fat loss by activating a skinny gene.

The sirtfood diet includes foods that contain seven proteins shown to decrease inflammation. Sirtfoods include red wine, dark chocolate, kale, berries, and soy, Wright said.

Some of the other sirtfoods encouraged in this diet include strawberries, onions, blueberries, walnuts, coffee, and medjool dates.

But although the creators of the diet say eating such foods will activate a skinny gene, experts say there is no proof to back the claims.

There is no evidence that the sirtfoods can turn on a skinny gene. The anti-inflammatory foods combined with calorie restrictions are more of the factors contributing to weight loss, Wright said.

Hunnes agrees.

Anything that sounds too good to be true often is, she said.

As 2019 draws to a close and people begin making goals and resolutions for the new year, all of the experts who spoke with Healthline advise focusing on making sustainable lifestyle changes, rather than following extreme diets.

Start before New Years. Dont make that date an artificial time to start good habits and be aware that the best diet for you is the diet that you can stay on long term, Kirkpatrick said.

Get away from the term diet and think of a lifestyle change that will support sustained success, Wright said. Look at making small changes that will add up to a big impact. Look to something like the Mediterranean diet plan that is plant-forward with vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and lean fish and meats, and uses healthful fats. Combined with activity, this is a plan that you can live with and achieve your health goals.

Coalition pushes for ‘low-carb’ diet to be added to 2020 Dietary Guidelines – FoodNavigator-USA.com

Posted: December 20, 2019 at 5:50 pm

The newly-formed group of low-carb diet advocates pointed to a large and growing body of scientific research that demonstrates how carbohydrate restriction is a safe and effective dietary strategy to prevent and even reverse chronic diet-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure.

According to the 2014 meta analysis cited by LCAN, among 59 eligible articles reporting 48 unique randomized trials (including 7,286 individuals) and compared with no diet, the largest weight loss was associated with low-carbohydrate diets.

Currently, theDGA does not include a low-carb diet plan. Members of LCAN have said that current dietary guidelines do not apply to most Americans and that a variety of dietary options should be presented to Americans.

One size does not fit all. If there is anything we've learned over the last four years, it's that the low-carb approach should be a viable option," said Dr. Eric Westman, Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University.

LCAN plans to launch a grassroots campaign in the coming months to urge leaders at USDA and HHS to ensure that a properly defined low-carb diet is included in the DGA to provide a dietary option for the majority of Americans who suffer from diet-related, chronic diseases.

According to Dr. Charles Cavo, co-founder and chief medical officer of Pounds Transformation in West Hartford, Connecticut, USDA and HHS officials have definedlow-carb inaccurately in the their scientific reviews.

Theyve defined the diet as having a carbohydrate intake of <45% or less of overall daily calories, while leading experts in the field define a low-carb diet as <25% or less, noted Dr. Cavo, which translates to 51-130 grams/day.

More extreme carbohydrate restrictive nutrition plans such as the ketogenic diet recommend that less 10% of overall daily calories come from carbohydrates.

LCAN defines a low-carb diet as reducing carbohydrate intake to below 25% of total calories, which can benefit most individuals especially those who are overweight or obese or people

with pre-diabetes/diabetes, fatty liver disease, high blood pressure, and unfavorable blood lipids that contribute to heart disease, such as low HDL-cholesterol and high triglycerides (fatty acids in the blood).

Essentially, according to LCAN's website, its general definition of a low carb diet looks similar to an inverted version of the current USDA-HHS dietary guidelines, in which fats and protein make up the base of the pyramid.

If the government has any responsibility to give advice on nutrition it should be focused on those who have a medical condition which is impacted by nutrition and provide evidence-based nutrition solutions, one being a low-carb diet. This diet is highly effective to prevent and treat diet-related illnesses and has decades of evidence to support it, said Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, professor of family medicine at West Virginia University.

The rise in popularity of low-carb diets such as going keto or simply a general avoidance of carbohydrates is a prevalent consumer trend. However, is this cautionary tale unfairly demonizing all sources of carbohydrates, even one from whole food sources?

Dr. Dana Ryan, Herbalife Nutritions director of sports performance and education told this publication that carbs have their place in the American diet, in balance with other macronutrients such as protein and fats.

Weve gotten to the point where weve demonized carbohydrates without adequate education that I think in a way is really hurting us.

We really go back to this notion of balance, rather than there be one macronutrient thats superior to the rest, said Dr. Ryan.

Dr. Ryan also noted that consumer education is needed around the source of cabrohydrates (e.g. carbs from whole grains and fruit vs. refined flours and sugar).

Len Romes Local Health: Adding nuts to your diet to reduce weight gain – WYTV

When we eat whole nuts, they take longer to chew and this can slow us down and make us feel fuller sooner

by: Len Rome

(WYTV) Some of us will eat our way through the Christmas season, while others will at least try to avoid packing on extra pounds this month.

If thats you, one way to avoid putting on extra weight is to help yourself to the holiday nut bowl.

Dietitians say adding the right amount of nuts to your diet can be beneficial.

When people were increasing their nut consumption by what they said was half a serving, which boils down to a tablespoon and a half of peanutsraw peanuts or two tablespoons of walnuts, a tree nut option, they were associated with less long-term weight gain, said Ryanne Lachman from the Cleveland Clinic.

Nuts are good, but eating nut butters did not have the same protective effect against weight gain.

When we eat whole nuts, they take longer to chew and this can slow us down and make us feel fuller sooner.

Add nuts to salads. Try chopped walnuts or sliced almonds, or add them to cooked dishes, such as green beans.

Stick to two handfuls of nuts each day. The healthiest way to enjoy them is in their raw form, with no added sugar or salt.

Healthy Diets Linked to Lower Risk of Hearing Loss – Olive Oil Times

Posted: December 20, 2019 at 5:50 pm

Healthy diets have benefits that extend beyond conferring alower risk of chronic diseases. Astudy from Brigham and Womens Hospital found they helped prevent aloss of hearing sensitivity.

The protection offered was significant because it involved hearing frequencies needed to understand speech.

In the research, scientists used data collected in the Nurses Health Study II Conservation of Hearing Study to monitor changes in hearing sensitivity over three years.

They observed that women whose diets most closely resembled the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), the Alternate Healthy Index-2010 (AHEI-2010) and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) showed considerably less decline in hearing sensitivity.

According to lead author Sharon Curhan, aphysician and epidemiologist in the Brighams Channing Division of Network Medicine, aloss of hearing due to aging is not unavoidable.

A common perception is that hearing loss is an inevitable part of the aging process. However, our research focuses on identifying potentially modifiable risk factors that is, things that we can change in our diet and lifestyle to prevent hearing loss or delay its progression, she said.

Earlier research indicates that areduced likelihood of self-reported hearing decline is linked to higher consumption of certain foods. These include fish, leafy greens and beans, as well as carrots, oranges and other fruits and vegetables. In the recent study, the scientists endeavored to build on these findings by examining food intake and objectively assessing hearing sensitivity.

With this intent, the researchers used 20years of food intake records collected every four years and investigated how eating patterns resembled the three commonly recommended healthy diets: the MedDiet, AHEI-2010 and DASH. Adherence to each of these diets has been linked to healthy aging, along with adecreased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases.

The results revealed that women who most closely followed the healthy diets had a30-percent lower likelihood of mid-frequency sound hearing loss. They also had a25-percent lower risk of high-frequency hearing decline.

The association between diet and hearing sensitivity decline encompassed frequencies that are critical for speech understanding, Curhan said. We were surprised that so many women demonstrated hearing decline over such arelatively short period of time. The mean age of the women in our study was 59years; most of our participants were in their 50s and early 60s. This is ayounger age than when many people think about having their hearing checked.

Acquired hearing loss can result from the cumulative influence of many factors, Curham told Olive Oil Times. These consist of reduced blood flow to the cochlea, the main organ of hearing in the inner ear; injury from low oxygen; oxidative damage; inflammation; and neurodegeneration along auditory pathways.

A healthy diet may help prevent hearing loss by anumber of mechanisms, which involve protection against oxidative damage, along with improvement of beneficial blood lipids and endothelial function, Curham added. Eating nutritious foods also may lower blood pressure and inflammation advantages that promote better blood flow and reduce neurodegeneration.

Based on the findings, the authors concluded that ahealthy diet may decrease the risk of acquired hearing loss.

Given that hearing loss is so common, a30 percent lower risk is considerable, Curham said.

The study was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Vegan parents accused of starving child to death on diet of fruit and vegetables – Sky News

Posted: December 20, 2019 at 5:50 pm

A vegan couple have been charged with first-degree murder after their 18-month-old son starved to death on a diet of only raw fruit and vegetables.

Ryan Patrick O'Leary, 30, and Sheila O'Leary, 35, were also charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter, child abuse and two counts of child neglect by a grand jury in Lee County, Florida, on Wednesday.

A police report said their son, who has not been named, weighed only 17 pounds (8kg) when he died.

Experts said the weight is in line with what a seven-month-old child should weigh.

The couple from Cape Coral, Florida, told officers they are vegan and only eat raw fruits and vegetables.

Mrs O'Leary had called 911 in September when she noticed her son was not breathing and felt cold, according to a police report.

She tried to resuscitate the baby but he was dead when paramedics arrived, according to the Florida broadsheet the News-Press.

State Attorney Amira Fox said the charges the couple face also cover the alleged treatment of their three other children, who are said to have suffered from child abuse and extreme neglect.

They have a three and a five-year-old child who are now in state custody, while an 11-year-old is in the care of her biological father, NBC News reports.

Mrs Fox said: "The evidence and crime scene in this case are gut-wrenching.

"These are images as a mother and state attorney I will not be able to forget."

The couple are set to appear in court on Monday.

Skipping Dinner For Weight Loss? Here’s Why You Must Stop This Practice Instantly – NDTV News

Weight Loss: Skipping dinner can cause sleep disturbances and make you feel lack of energy

Weight loss diet: Eating a healthy dinner is important for your body. In fact, to stay healthy and in shape, you should not skip any meals and try to get optimum nutrition in every meal, says nutritionist Rupali Datta. In this article, we are going to talk about the importance of eating healthy dinners, and why you must not skip dinners, even if you are trying to lose weight. Dinner ought to be light, yet nutritious. It is the last meal of the day after you which you fast for 10-12 hours. Skipping dinner can make you feel lethargic and weak, and may even cause sleep disturbances.

You must eat all your three meals, each in set quantities, says Dr Rupali. "The body has a certain limit for digestion and assimilation. It is not wise to skip one meal and club it another meal," she explains.

Also read:5 Underrated Health Benefits Of Eating Dinner Early

She goes on to add that dinner is important because you are going to fast for a long period of time after that. "Eating a healthy dinner allows you to experience sufficient energy through the night and the next morning. It helps the body nourish itself and maintains a healthy metabolic rate," says Dr Rupali.

At night time, your body is exhausted from the day and dinner provides the nourishment you need, before going to bed. Eating your lunch at around 2.30-3 pm, and then skipping dinner and not having your next meal until 9 am the next day, is too long a gap. "In such a long gap, the body begins to cannibalising it's own energy stores. So, it is important to eat light, but nutritious dinners," Dr Rupali asserts.

What's more is that skipping dinner can lead to acidity, constipation, heartburn, etc. At times, it may make you feel hungry at the middle of the night and make room for sugar cravings. Not only does this interfere with your weight loss regime, but also cause sleep disturbance.

Now that it has been established that eating dinners is important for your health, let's take a look at some healthy options you can bank on for dinner. Following are some quick, healthy and weight loss-friendly dinner options by Dr Rupali that you must try:

Make sure that there is a gap of 2 hours between your dinner and bed time. You can plan your day in a way that dinner is half-prepared by the time you reach home. Keeping a gap before dinner and bedtime can promote good sleep and prevent acidity, bloating etc.

Practice portion control and avoid eating deep fried or carb-heavy meal for dinner.

Anthony Joshuas trainer reveals weight loss was key to Andy Ruiz Jr win and slams critics for downplaying p – The Sun

ANTHONY JOSHUA'S trainer Angel Fernandez believes the boxer trimming down was key to his revenge win against Andy Ruiz Jr.

Back on December 7 out in Saudi Arabia the Brit secured an easy points win against a man who had previously floored him four times on the way to a KO win.

It meant Joshua regained back his heavyweight world titles and once his mandatory fights are out the way he could fight Deontay Wilder and/or Tyson Fury.

Despite the manner of victory AJ was slammed in some quarter for his "hit and don't get hit" tactics.

Some boxing fans even labelled him "a ballerina" in the aftermath of his one-sided success.

And Fernandez is shocked that his man was criticised despite become a two-time heavyweight champion.

Asked whether losing muscle mass contributed to the victory, Fernandez told World Boxing News:Big time. Hes just a person who learns very quick.

We couldnt go and engage with Ruiz because hes got very fast hands.

"Some people just try to take the credit away from Joshua but if you just watch the first fight and then the second fight, Joshua didnt allow Ruiz to do what he did to him in the first fight.

He took those strengths away from him.

Now that the celebrating is coming to a close, Joshua is already thinking about his own fight prep.

SunSport reported that he had offered to spar with fellow Brit Tyson Fury to help him prepare for his own rematch - against Wilder on February 22.

The Gypsy King posted on social media welcoming the offer, saying that he'd "love" to train with AJ.

But Fury's promoter Frank Warren isn't so keen, and now claims Joshua is "backing out" of the chance.

Speaking toThe MetroWarren said: "Thats all nonsense. Joshua is already backing out of the offer.
