Randy Jacksons Health and Weight Loss Journey: From Diabetes Diagnosis to Bypass Surgery and 100 Pounds Down – Us Weekly

Taking charge of his well-being. Randy Jackson made a pledge to live a healthier lifestyle after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2002.

Its a curse to be saddled with a disease thats life-threatening and that you cant completely get rid of, though you can certainly manage it, the former American Idol judge wrote in his 2008 book, Body With Soul. But its a blessing to get that huge wake-up call. After that day in the ER, when my doctor burst the bubble Id been living in, I couldnt lie to myself anymore. Right then and there, I began my journey toward better health.

Jackson, who weighed 350 pounds at the time of his diagnosis, underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2003, a procedure that reduces the size of the stomach and reroutes part of the digestive system so less food is absorbed. Since having surgery, the bass player has maintained a 100-pound weight loss, but it wasnt always easy.

In 2008, he told WebMD about the temptations he faced returning to American Idol after the procedure. After the show, everybody hangs out and eats and drinks. There are all kinds of sandwiches plus chips, cheeses, cookies, cakes, candy, beer, wine, he said. Despite the abundance of junk food on set, Jackson shared that the other Idol judges were a source of positive encouragement. Simon [Cowell] is always saying, We are ordering lunch, bring Randy a Dunkin Donut and 12 milkshakes. We joke about it, but they are also very supportive.

The record producer isnt one to completely cut out certain foods he opts for moderation instead. Never say, I will never have another piece of chocolate because it wont happen. And as soon as you say never, there is a binge coming, he told WebMD, adding that he sates his sweet tooth with the occasional chocolate with frozen yogurt.

After getting his health on track, the Journey bassist wanted to help others do the same. He founded Unify Health Labs in 2019 to do just that. In a blog post on the Unify Health Labs website, Jackson said his celebrity status gave him access to health specialists that others might not get to meet.

I was able to talk with top health experts: physicians, nutritionists, fitness experts, biologists, and more, the session musician wrote. They helped me a lot on my journey. And I wanted to share this expertise and information with as many people as possible.

Jackson added, Ive truly been blessed by life, but, next to my children, getting healthy was the best thing that ever happened to me.

This tour also gave Kreischer an excuse to hang out with his comedy friends. We sit around and make each other laugh, he said. And everyone just roasts me. Im an easy target. Im oblivious to most things.

In each city, they do something fun. In Bend, Indiana, they visited Notre Dame. In Louisville, Kentucky, they checked out Churchill Downs. In Atlanta, hell be with Nikki Glaser, Mark Norman and Big Jay Oakerson but as of the interview, he wasnt sure what they planned to do.

Why tour and just sit in your hotel room? he said. I want to go out and have fun! (He may be older but fun has preceded him. He was profiled in Rolling Stone magazine in 1997 as an uber party man at Florida State University, an article that inspired the film National Lampoons Van Wilder in 2002 starring Ryan Reynolds.)

This tour, he said, is a labor of love for me. He isnt really paying himself but providing his friends market rate appearance fees, gift bags, tour buses and private jet travel.

How is he able to get away with this? Netflix has compensated him handsomely for four specials so far. They are subsidizing my entire life, he said. I dont know where Id be without them. And they always have your back as an artist.

Kreischer, who grew up in Florida, has Georgia ties via his wife LeAnn, who grew up in Bowdon (population: 2,685 in 2020). They named one of their daughters Georgia. LeAnn, when not in Los Angeles, stays at a lake house in Carroll County.

She raises chickens, he said. Shell wake up early to make biscuits with sorghum syrup for the girls. Shes forever a small-town chick. You can take the redneck out of Bowdon but you cant take Bowdon out of the redneck.

Last summer, Kreischer finished shooting a movie The Machine, based on a story from 1995 when he said he supposedly robbed a train in Russia with the Russian Mafia. Its a comedy bit that led his fans to nickname him The Machine.

Like Will Ferrell, 49-year-old Kreischer enjoys going around topless whenever he can despite (or because of) his generous beer belly. My body is falling apart, he said. I just started working out. Hard. I had surgery on my elbow. I did my own stunts in the movie. I tackled a dude down a flight of stairs and tore my triceps. Im a year from surgery. I can now bench press my personal best. Im back 100%.

He said fellow comic and podcast king Joe Rogan once offered him $200,000 to drop below 200 pounds and keep the weight off for a year. He turned it down. I didnt want to sit down to eat and always have Joe Rogan in my head. I couldnt do it, he said.

Would he have done it for $2 million? Maybe. Ten million dollars in a heartbeat! he said.

The challenge is his inordinate love for food, which he brings up often on his podcasts, notably Bertcast and 2 Bears, 1 Cave with Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer.

His latest obsession is pasta carbonara. Ive been eating it for breakfast, he said. It has bacon, egg and cheese!

He said podcasts came along at the right time for his skill set: talking. A lot. I can go three hours, no problem, he said. Thank goodness I am friends with really smart people who got me to do a podcast. My first paycheck from ad sales was more than I was making hosting a show on the Travel Channel. We dont pay managers, agents or lawyers. There is no overhead.

His original podcast set up cost all of $800 in equipment, he said.

And he can do whatever he wants on his podcast. He can interview his fellow comics or historians or his dad. He has experimented with different formats. One time, he tried an idea where hed review all the tabs on his Internet browser. That worked well. Another time, he entered a Starbucks with a recorder and tried to eavesdrop on people. That bombed.

You find out from fans pretty quickly if something works or not, he said. When you fail, the fans laugh over the failure, not at you.

The only downside of all his yapping: Ive burned material in podcasts that would have been great on stage.

Meanwhile, a study by the Mayo Clinic (opens in new tab) describes how by avoiding sitting, promoting motion, and engaging in simple, repetitive, and creative activities, a significant amount of extra calories may be expended that can reduce weight and perhaps prevent the cardiovascular and metabolic complications associated with obesity.

While weve already provided a brief overview of what NEAT is, we asked Foodspring (opens in new tab) nutritionist and founder of pH Nutrition Liam Holmes for his definition of the concept.

It is the energy expended for everything we do outside of exercise, Holmes says. Pretty much anything that creates (calorie) burn can be classed as NEAT. It ranges from walking around the house to walking the dog, gardening, playing with your kids, doing general chores and even fidgeting.

The number of calories burned through NEAT will vary enormously depending on an individuals situational factors. For example, someones job will have a huge impact on their total daily energy expenditure; a laborer who is on their feet carrying out physically demanding tasks will expend far more energy than an office worker who remains seated for the majority of the working day.

The number of calories burned can vary widely depending on the individuals job, Holmes says. He references figures from an article published in Best Practice and Research Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (opens in new tab), saying: This is one of the key determinants as someone who is desk bound will average around 400-500kcal (each day) compared to a builder or farm worker who can burn up to 2000kcal.

Through this, he says, NEAT is often responsible for burning more calories than formal exercise or EAT - although your energy expended through EAT varies depending on the type and duration of exercise you are doing.

The amount of energy burned during exercise has numerous variables such as how much effort you are putting in, your skill level and the type of training, Holmes says. If you cycled for an hour and just plodded along, compared to someone who was pushing really hard, the calories burned could range from 400-1200kcal.

For the most part though, it is only athletes participating in long duration endurance exercise or very high intensity training multiple times a day who will burn more calories through EAT than NEAT each day.

Holmes says NEAT is an essential tool for those working towards body recomposition goals, such as weight loss. This is because, while all but the elite athletes among us will have a limited time each day to work out, there are many things we can do outside the gym to burn calories.

We have to remember there are two ways to create a calorie deficit, Holmes says. Decreasing energy in and increasing energy out. In other words, consuming fewer calories through food and burning more calories through increased daily activity levels (EAT and NEAT).

Increasing your NEAT and factoring it into your day is a great way to create a calorie deficit without having to reduce your intake even further. It is also a far less stressful way of increasing energy output than adding more exercise into your routine. Research has shown those who maintain a higher NEAT are able to maintain their target weight more successfully than those who have a lower NEAT.

A study published in the Journal of Exercise Nutrition and Biochemistry (opens in new tab) in 2018 reinforces this point. It states: NEAT is a highly variable component of daily TEE (daily total energy expenditure) and a low level of NEAT is associated with obesity. NEAT enhances lifestyle, and variations in individual and environmental factors can significantly affect daily energy expenditure.

Considering the multitude of health benefits that NEAT has to offer, Holmes overriding piece of advice for those looking to increase their non-exercise activity thermogenesis is disarmingly simple: Get moving!.

You can make substitutions in your everyday life, such as walking or cycling rather than driving, or taking the stairs rather than jumping in a lift, to increase your total daily energy expenditure. Another option is investing in a standing desk, or one of the best walking treadmills (opens in new tab), so you can walk as you work.
