Holiday eating tips from stars who lost more than 600 pounds – TODAY

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:44 pm

On Thursday, many Americans will sit down to a meal that could be a whopping 3,000 calories. While just one bad day of eating might not lead to weight gain, Thanksgiving marks the start of an often overindulgent holiday season.

But, putting on weight over the holidays doesnt have to be inevitable. These five weight loss all-stars have shed a combined total of 626 pounds and have been maintaining their losses. They share advice on how they enjoy beloved holiday foods without gaining weight or creating bad habits.

I always tell everyone it is a holiday not a holaweek or a holamonth, Erica Lugo told TODAY. Lugo lost 160 pounds and is a new trainer on the upcoming season of USA's "The Biggest Loser." For one day I can enjoy myself and not go crazy.

Too often, people give themselves permission to overeat starting at Thanksgiving and continuing at every office potluck, lunch out, Friendsgiving, gift exchange and family gatherings.

It's often not just one day for many of us, Dr. Kevin Gendreau, told TODAY via email. The family medicine doctor is maintaining his 125 pound weight loss. Before you know it, youre eating unhealthy foods three to four times per week and youre back into your fat jeans by the New Year.

Often people skip eating on holidays rationalizing that theyll save their calories for the big meal. But that often causes hungry people to consume loads of calories.

People think OK I am going to save all my calories for one meal and what happens is that just triggers a binge. You just have this mentally where it is 'All right, game on,' Lugo said. You cant skip a meal.

Gendreau said he often eats a healthy snack, such as nuts, prior to leaving the house so he isnt ravenous.

Snack on a handful of almonds, an apple, scrambled eggs, a cup of carrots, snap peas and hummus or green tea and don't forget a big glass of water, he explained. Fill up on something healthy so theres less room for the garbage.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

After losing 124 pounds, Justine McCabe remembers holidays where she restricted her calories so much that she barely enjoyed anything and, she remembers holidays when she ate so much she felt sick for days. Thats why she tries to be mindful.

Be intentional with your eating, McCabe told TODAY. Dont use the holidays as a cheat time.

Gendreau agrees. He finds that while watching football or hanging out, he might snack even though he isnt hungry.

Dont let boredom lead to weight gain," he said. "Slow, mindful eating is key."

Lugo often participates in a turkey trot or other holiday exercise activity prior to Thanksgiving dinner. Hannah Lester, who lost 112 pounds, doesnt make any changes to her exercise routine, but keeps up her good habits.

I just try to stay consistent, Lester told TODAY via email. I dont want to slack off during the holiday season.

Gendreau does the same he sticks with high-intensity interval training throughout the holiday season.

Lugo also includes family exercise, such as walks or flag football, after dinner.

Just because it is a holiday doesnt mean you have to stop all activities, she said.

Lugo has noticed that when she feels stressed or overly tired, her willpower isnt as strong. Shes more likely to snack or overeat.

Control your stress levels," she explained. "The higher your stress, the more that your body signals your brain to want to eat. Go to yoga. Breathe a couple of times."

Lester has a hard time passing up her moms shortbread cookies and Chex Mix. So she doesnt.

Its all about portion control," she said. "Instead of three cookies, I just eat one."

Lugo agrees. She loves sweets and enjoys a small piece of pie and a cookie. Janielle Wright, who lost 105 pounds, finds that small portions help her maintain her weight.

I know that too much of anything isnt good, so Ill have the foods I love in moderation," she told TODAY via email. "Thats definitely key."

On holidays, its easy to heap food onto a huge plate and eat all of it. But Lugo found an easy solution.

If I am handed a huge plate, I am going to fill that whole plate, she said. When I pick a smaller plate my portions tend to be way smaller.

Wright also uses the smaller plate approach and says she never eats anything without portioning it out first.

I put out everything in a small plate, never eat straight out of a package," she said. "When the plate is empty I stop."

UAE weight-loss: Meet the Pakistani who lost 44kg in 4 months – Gulf News

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:44 pm

Sajid Ali before (left) and after Image Credit: Supplied

My name is Sajid Ali. I am 32 years old, 178cm tall and from Pakistan. I came to UAE in October 2006.

I used to be a glut of sorts, never letting any delicacy pass me by. I was particularly fond of sugary drinks and chocolate. I was averse to games and sports except when lying in the comfort of a sofa, watching cricket while munching on crisps and sipping on soda.

My weight hit 108kg on the scale and so began a disturbing chapter in my life. I lost self-esteem when friends and even family started calling me names. I slowly withdrew from social circles and on the few occasions that I ventured out to shop, I would longingly stare at the slim shirts on display before settling on my size, XXL. I felt like everyone was staring at me.

Tired of all the negative feedback, I made a resolution to lose the weight. This was back in 2017. This was my turning point.

I tried enrolling in a gym right away but faced financial constraints. So I started daily walks and jogging. I would walk 4km from Hor Al Anz to Mamzar Beach in Dubai and vice-versa. At the beach, I would run another 4km. This would take me two hours.

Reducing my daily meal intake proved to be the biggest challenge despite my overwhelming desire and drive. There was a time when my friends invited me to a party and I had to say no. I had to say no to delicious food that was in front of me. It was difficult. (The lessons have stayed with me though; even today I am off sugar and allow myself a cheat meal once a month.)

I still remember the time I almost gave up. It was during my first month; I stopped and cried. Nineteen days into the fitness plan, I thought I would never see the results I was dreaming about; I was killing myself and had a very hard time exercising without a trainer. For the moment, I couldnt see results. Fortunately a few days on, a visit to a mall and a look at the mirror provided me with the encouragement I needed. I headed back to the beach.

Five months later, I participated in the Desert Warrior challenge, completing an 8km run in 48min.

My persistence paid astonishing dividends. I shed 44kg in just 4 months.

I later managed to join a gym located in Deira, Dubai, in August 2017 after my finances improved. I wanted a trim body and was determined to achieve it.

The first phase of the gym was obviously tough. When I initially talked to people about gaining a sculpted body, people were laughing in jest, but I couldnt care less. My goal was set. Within two months, I acquired my desired shape. I never hired a trainer, but I did some weight lifting on my own.

Today, I weigh 68kg. (I put on about 4kg of muscle since I dropped the kilos).I wear small to medium T-shirts. My waist has gone from a size 42 to a size 30. The exercise helped not only with stamina and fitness but also to deal with any fallout such as loose skin that weight loss may have brought.

People still stare at mebut now its in awe.

My family and friends have now given me new nicknames. Its all just as I hoped.

Weight loss for diabetes: Heres how to shed those extra kilos – TheHealthSite

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:44 pm

Weight loss is the top priority of millions across the world and for good reasons. One of the essential reasons behind the importance of shedding those extra kilos is diabetes, a hormonal condition characterized by high blood sugar. Affecting a large cross section of the global population, diabetes has been linked with obesity by scientists. In fact, there are innumerable studies stating that 9 in 10 people who suffer from type-2 diabetes is overweight.

It is not yet clear if there is any cause-and-effect link between obesity and diabetes. However, several studies have proved that being overweight can increase your risk of this condition and managing weight is essential for people suffering from high blood sugar levels.

Unfortunately, losing weight is a tough task for diabetics. Diabetics are unable to use insulin hormone in their body efficiently. This, in turn, leads to the increase of fat tissues in the body. Increased fat, on the other hand, reduces the bodys capacity use insulin sufficiently. Inefficient usage of insulin makes it tough for diabetics to metabolize sugar, leading to weight gain as a result. This is a vicious circle. Well, this may make it sound weight loss to be a mission impossible for people living with high blood sugar. Well, it is difficult, but not impossible.

According to the Joslin Diabetes Center, losing just 7 per cent of your body weight improves your insulin sensitivity by 57 per cent. By losing weight, you are improving your bodys glucose tolerance and insulin resistance while reducing the risk of common diabetes-related complications like eye diseases (retinopathy), neuropathy (nerve damage especially to your feet, which may lead to amputation), kidney failure, liver damage, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.

According to the experts, if you are a diabetic, you need to target the fat around your waist first as central obesity is the greatest risk to your diabetes and its effects. Here are few ways in which a diabetes patient can lose weight.

While starting your weight loss plan, start by assessing what you are currently eating. To achieve this, the aim should be to strike a right balance between carbohydrates, fats and protein. You should cut back on carbohydrates from your diet. This is because, in order to digest carbohydrates, your pancreas has to release insulin, the hormone which is insufficiently produced or inefficiently used in case of a diabetic. If you have to eat carbohydrates make sure choose the ones that are less likely to spike your sugar level. Have carbs in the form of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Other than cutting off carbohydrates, there is another step that you need to take in terms of food: Adding enough protein to your diet sufficiently. At least 20 percent of your diet should include lean protein, which is found in fish, tofu and chicken. When it comes to fat, leave out bad fats (saturated fats) and include good fats (unsaturated fats) found in canola oil flaxseeds, nuts, etc. Filling up on high fibre foods can help in keeping your blood sugar steady and your tummy full, reducing the frequency of meals. Consulting a nutritionist about your diet regimen is a must for a person living with diabetes, especially if he or she needs to shed those extra kilos.

This is a must foe your weight loss mission to be successful. If you stay fit and active, you have a better chance of reducing your weight and controlling diabetes. Exercise is considered as probably the best way of managing type-2 diabetes because muscles can use glucose without insulin when youre exercising. When you exercise, your muscles get the glucose they need, and in turn, your blood glucose level goes down. Workouts can also make your insulin more active, which helps your cells use glucose more effectively. People suffering from diabetes and obesity are at a high risk of developing blocked arteries, which can lead to stroke or heart attack. Exercise helps in reducing bad cholesterol level in the body, which is blocking your blood from passing through the arteries.

Bride-to-be drops 6st by hula hooping and still eats McDonald’s and Frankie & Benny’s – The Sun

Posted: November 25, 2019 at 6:44 pm

A BRIDE-to-be has lost an incredible 6st by hula hooping - and says she still enjoys eating McDonald's and Frankie & Benny's.

Izzie East, 25, started piling on the pounds after meeting her now-fianc, Nathan, 31, as a teenager.

14

14

The pair, from Malton, North Yorks, would stay in eating takeaways or go out for dinner and she soon ballooned to 15st 2lbs.

But when doctors warned she was at risk of developing polycystic ovary syndrome and had a fatty liver aged just 21, she realised she needed to do something.

Izzie, who was then a size 18, was terrified to join a gym and wanted a way to get fit at home when she discovered hula hooping.

The support worker said that just 20 minutes of hip shimmying in front of the TV a day helped her get down to a svelte size 8 - and now weighs just 9st.

Izzie said: "I hate the gym its not for me at all so when I discovered the hula hoop it was the perfect fit.

When I took it up I couldnt believe the results, especially on my legs and arms because I didn't think it would change them at all.

I have a couple of hoops but my everyday one weighs 1.6kg and I do all sorts with it, even squats and lunges, while I just hula hoop and watch the telly.

It's helped me tone up my tummy and get rid of the excess skin I had too

"It's helped me tone up my tummy and get rid of the excess skin I had too, even a wedding dress I bought in August fell to my hips when I tried it on last week because I'm still losing weight.

"I'm hooked on it now. The hoop even comes on holiday with me because I've got a foldable one."

She added:"People are always intrigued and ask me where to get a hoop from, I think they are shocked that you can get these results from just a hoop.

"I find it funny that hula hooping is usually something kids play with at school, and when people ask they still think it's the hoop we used to use as kids."

Izzie and her husband-to-be met while working at a hotel in their hometown, with Izzie serving tables and Nathan working as a chef in the kitchens.

After late shifts together, the couple found themselves gauging on takeout most nights and spent the rest of their dates eating in restaurants.

Nathan even proposed to Izzie while they cuddled up on the sofa watching the Great British Bake Off in September 2016.

But while Nathan could feast away with his weight relatively unchanged, Izzie started piling on the pounds - only realising how far she'd come when the doctors gave her a stark wake up call.

She said: "Nathan and Is only way of seeing each other was eating out or when we would finish a late shift at the hotel we would just get takeout, so we would sit and binge eat.

"He can eat and eat and not put anything on and I thought I could keep up because I didn't really care what I looked like, I was happy.

"But I was comfortable in my relationship and Nathan actually proposed when I was at my biggest.

"I remember thinking I don't want to be a fat bride, and then I got a real wake up call when I went to the doctors in 2016.

[My fiance] can eat and eat and not put anything on and I thought I could keep up because I didn't really care what I looked like

I wasnt feeling normal, my periods were all over the place and really heavy.

They told me I was overweight and said that I was at risk of developing polycystic ovary syndrome and had a fatty liver.

"Not long after that doctors appointment we went on holiday and I felt really self-conscious all of a sudden.

"When I got home I decided I was going to start shifting the weight.

"I knew I needed to make changes in my life while I was young to sort it out.

14

14

14

14

In January 2017 Izzie joined her local Slimming World group and within 10 months had already dropped down to 10st.

Not long after starting her fitness journey, Izzie set up a fitspiration Instagram blog to help other gym-phobics and discovered a whole new world of working out at home.

Now the social media influencer, who has nearly 20,000 followers, is an inspiration in her own right and has even been dubbed the 'hula-hoop queen' after taking up the sport in October last year.

But after years of restricting herself from any junk food, she admits she can still scoff a McDonalds as part of a different calorie counting method, which she adopted last August.

I've started calorie counting and I've realised I can even go to Frankie and Benny's and have a full skinny burger

And a strapless A-line wedding dress the bride-to-be bought just three months ago for her wedding in May in a size 10 already now falls off her tiny waist.

Izzie said: In the past I was very strict with myself and always said I'm not eating any rubbish but in the last year I've started calorie counting and I've realised I can even go to Frankie and Benny's and have a full skinny burger and still be in my calorie deficit.

"It means I'm enjoying life and not restricting myself from anything I enjoy just to keep the weight off.

"I still do a lot of work to stay in shape - I do 10,000 steps a day, at home work out videos and 20 to 30 mins of hula hooping every day.

WE CAN WORK IT OUT I was so fat I had to quit my job - after years of gorging on takeaways

But just being able to go online shopping and get a size 8 gives me such a buzz when it hits me that I'm not buying a size 18 anymore.

"I was always skinny in school but people who have seen me in more recent years are always shocked when they see me now, it makes me feel amazing."

Will Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady Cheat on Their Diets This Holiday Season? – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: November 24, 2019 at 4:46 pm

NFL star Tom Brady and his supermodel wife, Gisele Bundchen, both have careers that require a healthy body. In order to maintain their figure, the couple notoriously follows a rigid diet with several rules and restrictions. But how does that impact the biggest eating day of the year: Thanksgiving? Do Bundchen and Brady cheat during the holiday or do they remain devoted to their diet?

The whole Brady-Bundchen family, including their two kids, eat a totally organic, vegetable-heavy diet. Allen Campbell, a private-chef who used to work for them, reported to Boston.com that 80 percent of what Brady and Bundchen eat is vegetables.

That also means lots of whole grains, brown rice, quinoa, millet, and beans. The other 20 percent of their diet is lean meats. According to Campbell, he cooks with coconut oil, Himalayan pink salt and uses lots of nutrient-dense foods.

The football star and his model wife also follow several food restrictions: Absolutely no sugar, white flour, dairy, MSG, coffee or caffeine. Surprisingly, Brady also stays away from nightshades because theyre not anti-inflammatory. That means no potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, or eggplant.

The list of foods that Brady and Bundchen avoid is rather long. It would be a challenge to follow a diet like this. So its no surprise that they enlisted a private-chef to help.

Bradys diet is a little stricter than the rest of the family. For example, the kids will eat fruit, but Brady tends to avoid it except for his morning smoothie. However, for the most part, the entire family eats the same foods so that theyre able to sit down to a meal together.

One aspect of his diet that Brady takes very is water. According to Business Insider, he consumes 2.5 gallons of water every day. Brady described his hydration routine in a book detailing his diet, which he called TB12.

Drink at least one-half of your body weight in ounces of water every day, Brady wrote in his book. Thats the minimum. Ideally, youll drink more than that, and with added electrolytes, too.

With a career in the NFL, sometimes Thanksgiving means game day not family meals. But this year, the Patriots are playing the Sunday before. So Brady will be able to spend Thanksgiving day with his family.

But many of the traditional Thanksgiving meals are off the table for Brady and Bundchen because of their strict diet. For example, dont expect to see mashed potatoes or pie on the menu. The former is nightshade and the latter usually has plenty of sugar.

However, turkey is lean meat that Brady shouldnt have a problem with. Other favorites like roasted vegetables, salad, whole wheat bread would be fine as well.

In fact, most Thanksgiving favorites can be made in a healthy way with a little creative thinking. Just dont count on any marshmallows for the sweet potatoes.

Campbell is no longer working with Brady and Bundchen, so he wont be preparing the holiday meal. But considering that they have a combined net worth of $580 million, they certainly could hire one to cook their Thanksgiving dinner since its such an important meal.

However, they may also decide to just make it themselves. It seems thats exactly what the family did in 2016. According to a social media post from Bundchen that year, the couple is very capable of cooking for themselves. In fact, she shared a photo of Brady with a pan of biscuits and wrote that it was Grandmas biscuit recipe.

The biscuits seem to imply that the couple may occasionally cheat on Thanksgiving since white flour wouldnt normally be allowed. When Brady spoke with Mens Health, he admitted that he used to be pretty strict about his diet, but has relaxed a lot in the last couple of years.

If Im craving bacon, I have a piece, Brady said. Same with pizza. You should never restrict what you really want. Were humans, here for one life.

According to Bundchens post, the whole family participated in the meal. In another photo, the kids were shown helping with food prep. They seemed relaxed and laid-back, and its likely that 2019 could be the same way.
