Lose weight fast by doing all these things everyday which helps you burn fat – Daily Star

Posted: November 24, 2019 at 4:42 pm

Although it may not be summer anymore, many people are still thinking about their weight loss journeys.

Fortunately for some, to lose weight it doesnt necessarily mean diet plans and endless hours in the gym.

The NHS recommends a number of tips ahead of the Christmas season and explained what slimmers could do to avoid piling on unwanted belly fat.

Not skipping breakfast and eating regular meals are one of the most important things to do everyday in order to lose weight.

Here are six everyday tasks you could do:

1. Drink plenty of water

While eating regular meals is key to losing weight, another thing thats important is your water intake.

As well as providing numerous health benefits, water could help to burn off the excess calories you cant cut by other things.

2. Cut down on alcohol

This is pretty self-explanatory. Alcohol contains plenty of calories which of course plays a huge part in weight gain.

A standard glass of wine can contain as many calories as a piece of chocolate. Over time, drinking too much can easily contribute to weight gain.

3. Dont skip breakfast

If you think skipping a meal is the way to lose weight, well, youre wrong.

This is because you could miss out on essential nutrients which might encourage sucking more throughout the day because you feel hungry.

4. Eat regular meals

If you eat at regular times during the day, this could help to burn calories at a faster rate.

By doing this, you could reduce the temptation to snack on foods high in fat and sugar.

5. Plan your meals

This is the same as eating regular meals because if you plan ahead it avoids skipping foods and missing out on important nutrients.

Planning your meals also makes sure you stick to your calorie allowance.

Medifast: Gaining Profits from Losing Weight – Moneyshow.com

Posted: November 24, 2019 at 4:42 pm

John Reese selects stocks based on the strategies of some of the stock market's most legendary long-term investors. Medifast (MED) is a buy in the model portfolio of his Validea newsletter based on the "Price to Earnings Growth" strategy of famed Fidelity fund manager Peter Lynch.

Medifast produces, distributes and sells weight loss, weight management, and healthy living products, and other consumable health and nutritional products.

Optavia is a personal coaching division of the company that consists of Optavia Coaches, who provides coaching and support to clients utilizing the Optavia platform.

Medifast Direct is its direct-to-consumer business unit that allows customers to order Medifast products directly through its Website or its in-house call center.

The Medifast Weight Control Centers business unit sells product through franchise and reseller locations, which offers structured programs and a team of professionals to help customers achieve weight-loss and weight-management success at center locations.

Here is a review of the criteria we assess under Peter Lynch's price to earnings growth investment strategy.

DETERMINE THE CLASSIFICATION:

This methodology would consider MED a "fast-grower".

P/E/GROWTH RATIO: PASS

The investor should examine the P/E (12.62) relative to the growth rate (29.80%), based on the average of the 3, 4 and 5 year historical eps growth rates, for a company.

This is a quick way of determining the fairness of the price. In this particular case, the P/E/G ratio for MED (0.42) is very favorable.

SALES AND P/E RATIO: NEUTRAL

For companies with sales greater than $1 billion, this methodology likes to see that the P/E ratio remain below 40. Large companies can have a difficult time maintaining a growth rate high enough to support a P/E above this threshold.

MED, whose sales are $688.9 million, is not considered large enough to apply the P/E ratio analysis. However, an investor can analyze the P/E ratio relative to the EPS growth rate.

INVENTORY TO SALES: PASS

When inventories increase faster than sales, it is a red flag. However an increase of up to 5% is considered bearable if all other ratios appear attractive.

Inventory to sales for MED was 6.41% last year, while for this year it is 7.76%. Since inventory has been rising, this methodology would not look favorably at the stock but would not completely eliminate it from consideration as the inventory increase (1.35%) is below 5%.

EPS GROWTH RATE: PASS

This methodology favors companies that have several years of fast earnings growth, as these companies have a proven formula for growth that in many cases can continue many more years.

This methodology likes to see earnings growth in the range of 20% to 50%, as earnings growth over 50% may be unsustainable. The EPS growth rate for MED is 29.8%, based on the average of the 3, 4 and 5 year historical eps growth rates, which is acceptable.

TOTAL DEBT/EQUITY RATIO: PASS

This methodology would consider the Debt/Equity ratio for MED (0.00%) to be wonderfully low (equity is at least ten times debt). This ratio is one quick way to determine the financial strength of the company.

Cherokee Nation leading the way in fight against diabetes – Tahlequah Daily Press

Posted: November 24, 2019 at 4:42 pm

The Cherokee Nation has its sights on eliminating the significance of diabetes in Northeastern Oklahoma, and have been encouraging folks to get outdoors and get active this month - National Diabetes Awareness Month.

As a way to combat diabetes, Cherokee Nation Health Services has been hosting Diabetes Month Awareness Walks throughout the tribe's 14-county jurisdiction. Tonya Wapskineh, coordinator of the Cherokee Nation Diabetes Prevention Program, said exercise is a key factor in addressing the disease, as well as other measures.

"Diabetes can be prevented by getting your blood sugar tested on a yearly basis; reducing intake of sugar and refined carbs; engaging in 150 minutes of activity a week; drinking more water; losing weight if you are overweight; quit smoking; eating foods that are rich in nutrients; reduce the intake of saturated fats; watch portion sizes; move throughout the day; try to get in 10,000 steps a day; and reduce intake of processed foods and fast food," said Wapskineh.

Diabetes remains a considerable issue for people across the globe, as 414 million, or one in 11 people are impacted by the disease. Okies have been susceptible, too. According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 14 percent of Oklahomans have diabetes, and an estimated 19,000 people in the state are diagnosed with it each year.

The members of CN's Diabetes Prevention Program are working on the issue, though, and the program is the first tribal one of its kind to receive national recognition from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"To gain CDC recognition, your organization must show that it can meet CDC standards and effectively deliver a proven diabetes prevention lifestyle-change program," said Wapskineh.

"Cherokee Nation Diabetes Prevention Program first received recognition in November 2018, and recently received an extension of their full status standing until August 2021."

The disease is costly for Americans, too, as nearly $200 billion are spent per year on obesity-related health costs. The weight felt on people's wallets is not only figuratively, but literally. WalletHub released a recent study for National Diabetes Awareness Month which labels Oklahoma as the sixth "fattest state" in America.

The tribe's prevention program has been shedding that weight, though, as the program's participants have trimmed down in recent years.

"A total of 1,972 pounds have been lost between August 2016 and November 2019, and we have served 447 community members in seven locations throughout the Cherokee Nation tribal jurisdiction," said Wapskineh.

Cherokee Nation is not alone in its mission to combat the disease, as the members of the Oklahoma Legislative Diabetes Caucus announced Nov. 1 that their agenda next year will focus on creating more partnerships, improving education and training, and encouraging more activity in schools to helps Oklahoma's diabetic and pre-diabetic citizens.

State Sen. Frank Simpson, R-Springer, said there are many "state and tribal agencies, nonprofits, medical institutions, and other resources working tirelessly to fight diabetes and protect patients."

"I'm proud of how far we've come as a state in raising awareness and educating Oklahomans about diabetes management and prevention, but our work won't be done until the disease no longer exists," Simpson said in an Oklahoma State Senate press release. "The tools and services are available, we just need to figure out how to provide those resources to more Oklahomans in the most efficient manner possible."

The Cherokee Nation's recourses are already in place, as well, and community members interested in preventing diabetes can participate in the tribe's Diabetes Prevention Program. The program is currently recruiting for classes to be held in 2020. The Healthy Native classes are available in Tahlequah, Stilwell, Sallisaw, Muskogee, Salina, Ochelata, Vinita, and Jay.

"It is a year-long program that encompasses weekly and monthly Healthy Native classes to help participants work towards a 5 percent weight loss goal, by meeting nutrition and physical activity goals," said Wapskineh.

Dibsy finds love with ‘amazing’ girlfriend after losing 20 stone in one year – Daily Star

Posted: November 24, 2019 at 4:42 pm

Former fast food addict Dibsy has found love with an amazing new girlfriend after shedding 20 stone in just one year.

Darren Dibsy McClintock, 28, was barred from ordering takeaways by his tough-talking personal trainer after being issued with a terrifying ultimatum to diet or die.

Docs warned how morbidly obese Dibsy was eating himself to death after he developed an addiction to pizzas, sandwiches, crisps and chocolate.

But pal no-nonsense PT Mike Hind helped him drop an incredible 16st.

Now Dibsy, from Middlesborough, has revealed how he is in a relationship with trainee nurse Jade, 28, who contacted him after following his progress online.

The lovebirds messaged each other on Facebook after Jade, also from Middlesborough, wished him good luck at the start of his weight loss journey.

They went on their first date at a bowling alley in August before becoming an official couple a month later.

Overjoyed Dibsy, 28, said: "Jade is such an amazing girl. She's so caring and is really supportive of my weight loss and what I'm doing.

"The two of us just click and get on so well.

"It's great to have someone like that in my life - 18 months ago I wouldn't have thought it was possible."

He added: "I'm definitely punching above my weight."

Dibsy told how he has a new-found self-confidence after slimming down.

"My mindset now is completely different to how it was 18 months ago," he explained.

"Before I wouldn't have tried anything new because I was scared about what people would think of me.

"But now I feel comfortable in my own skin and like I can just be myself, it's an incredible turnaround.

"I'm really happy now."

Loyal personal trainer Mike has been supporting Dibsy every step of the way.

He said: "When Dibsy and I first started working together I asked him what he wanted to achieve.

"He told me he wanted to a girl to settle down with, just like all his friends have.

"To see him achieve that now after putting so much work in is incredible, I'm so happy for him.

"Dibsy and Jade make a great couple.

"It just goes to show what eating well and keeping fit can do for you, it's completely turned his life around."

Dibsy suffered a setback last month when an irregular heartbeat returned and sidelined him from the gym.

He went under the knife to fix the problem last week and is already back on the treadmill.

Now he plans to have three ops to remove excess skin.

He added: "It's onward and upward from here.

Couple shed more than eight stone after eating tons of takeaways piled on the pounds – Derbyshire Live

Posted: November 24, 2019 at 4:42 pm

Bingeing on takeaways and a daily visit to the cob van led to a husband and wife piling on the pounds.

But now the couple are in seventh heaven after ditching fast food and shedding an impressive eight stones between them.

Dawn and Mark Smith weighed in at almost 50 stone between them but ditching the junk food has certainly paid dividends.

Dawn, 29, from Ashby, has told how she was always overweight but she became tired of seeing her 'Winnie the Pooh' belly. She used to tip the scales at 20 stone, she said.

While husband Mark weighed in at almost 30 stone and the pair decided it was time to change and they went on a diet together.

Dawn, who is mum to Cynthia, seven, and Isabelle, five, said: "I was always the fat kid at school. I have always been active and on the go but I just ate the wrong foods.

"McDonald's and Chinese food are my favourites and I was always popping into Greggs on the playgroup run."

Dawn said her mum used to poke fun at her 'Winnie the Pooh belly' and she became embarrassed when the woman who runs the 'cob van' knew her order every day.

The mum said: "Shortbread is my real downfall but we would also snack on chocolate and crisps, sitting on the settee binging on them every night.

"We would eat takeaways every night and between Mark and myself could get through at least half a loaf of bread at breakfast - just the two of us.

"It was getting ridiculous.

"In fact, it was so bad that the cob van lady always knew my order.

"I was living in leggings and T-shirts. It was just getting embarrassing.

Mark, 37, weighed in at almost 30 stone, and had diabetes and other health issues.

Said Dawn: "We just sat down and talked about our weight. We needed to be around for our girls."

After being inspired by Dawns mums incredible 10-stone weight loss, the couple joined her at the Woodville Slimming World group in January 2019 and saw results straight away.

Dawn said: "I had tried Slimming World before and it worked but I stopped going and piled the weight back on again.

"I told myself that I will stick this out and I am not going to give in like I normally do.

"Luckily I saw results straight away. In the first week I lost 9lbs and my clothes started feeling looser.

"I felt good and it really spurred me on.

"We used to be so negative and we were our own worst enemies because we had no motivation.

"Now we are so proud of each other."

Since joining the group Dawn, who was a size 26 to 28 and tipped the scales at 20 stone and half a pound, and dropped five dress sizes and weighed around 16 stone 7.5lb.

An incredible transformation in 33 weeks.

Mark was 29 stone 10lbsand wearing XXXXXXL clothes when they joined the group and now weighs 24 Stone 9.5 lbs and is now in XXXL clothing.

The pairs weight loss has shocked lots of people, and many have commented on Dawns new figure.

She said: "My friends and family are all surprised at the difference in me but really proud.

"I cannot believe how much of a reaction I have been getting since losing the weight.

"I have had strangers coming up to me in the street saying 'I have seen you around and I cant believe you have lost so much weight. You look great'.

"I am so proud of Mark, and the girls are always excited to see if we have bought any certificates back.

"It just shows that if I can do it, I believe anyone can.

"I used to have anxiety and panic attacks but now I sit up in the group and I give out advice.

"I won woman of the year 2019 and together we won Slimming World couple of the year for 2019.

"I feel so much better, so much healthier since losing weight."

The couple, who run their own company, MD Smiths LTD (Electrical Contractors), are already making big plans for the future.

Dawn said: "The only time I have gained weight in 33 weeks is when I went on holiday to Greece.

"I am tall so I want to lose another three stone and Mark wants to lose a total of 10 stone this year.

"I am going to be 30 in March and I really want to have a big party and wear a nice dress and impress.

Sorry this isnt your typical sports story with a line score, but now that I have your attention, I have some important information to share with you. Its Movember, and besides shaggy facial hair, it brings awareness and support for testicular cancer, prostate cancer and suicide.

So, if its Mens Health Awareness, you may be asking yourself, why is a female writing this article? Well, women have been saving men for centuries now. As a physician, I can tell you if it wasnt for wives and girlfriends, I wouldnt have any male patients. Im sure that a couple hundred years ago a pilgrim wife told her pilgrim husband, Thou hast a most foul spot on thy back! Get thee to the physician! In all seriousness though, men are 24 percent less likely to have seen a physician within the last year.

The average life expectancy in the U.S. of men is 76.2 years, while for women it is 81 years. Approximately 12 percent of men over the age of 18 are in poor health. So, why is that? There are multiple factors, but there is a reluctance of men to admit they have a problem and need help, whether that is from an injury to mental health. We live in a society where men are expected to suck it up and not discuss any chinks in their armor. Admitting they have a problem is perceived as weakness. Im not attacking masculinity, but not seeking routine health care is a detriment to both physical and mental health, and ultimately overall survival. So, how do we change that? As G.I. Joe always said, Knowing is half the battle.

Testicular cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in young men. It can occur at any age, but it is more frequent from age 20 to 45. The average age of diagnosis in the U.S. is 33 years old. About 1 in every 250 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer during their lifetime. Fortunately, there is a 95 percent five-year survival rate, even at advanced stages. As with all cancers, the earlier the diagnosis, the better the survival. Approximately 9,500 men will be diagnosed every year with around 400 deaths.

Risk factors for testicular cancer include family history (especially in a brother), history of undescended testicle (even surgically corrected), personal history of testicular cancer and white males. HIV infection also carries an increased risk of developing testicular cancer. Testicular cancer is rare in black men, but they are more likely to die from it if it develops. Treatment is mainly surgical removal of the affected testicle, but it may include chemotherapy and radiation depending on stage.

Having a single orchiectomy does not affect a mans ability to have sex or conceive children. The main tool against testicular cancer is early diagnosis and treatment. Men should perform routine self-testicular exams, beginning in their teens and continuing throughout their life.

The best time to perform a testicular exam is either in the shower or just after getting out of the shower. The technique is simple: grasp each testicle between the thumb and fingers and gently roll it. You are looking for anything out of the ordinary for you: change in size or shape, a lump or tenderness. If you find anything, make an appointment with your doctor to get it checked out ASAP.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in men (lung cancer is number one for both men and women). Approximately 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. The incidence of prostate cancer goes up with age, with the average age of diagnosis being 66.

Though there is a 98 percent five-year survival rate if discovered early, 88 men die of prostate cancer every day. There are approximately 175,000 new cases every year with over 30,000 deaths. Risk factors for prostate cancer include family history, obesity, diet high in saturated fats and high testosterone levels (including testosterone replacement therapy). Black men have a 74 percent higher rate of prostate cancer than other races and the death rate is twice as high.

There is a link to the BRCA and HER2 genes causing prostate cancer and men with that history should begin screening at age 40. For most men, we recommend beginning screening at age 50 with a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) level. The PSA has faced a lot of controversy recently, but it is still a good test for screening for prostate cancer.

The trend of the PSA is more important because the PSA typically doubles when prostate cancer is present. We recommend men with a family history of prostate cancer and black men begin screening at age 45. Signs and symptoms of prostate cancer are often the same as symptoms of enlargement of the prostate (BPH, or benign prostatic hypertrophy).

These symptoms include increased frequency of urination at night (nocturia), decreased force of the urine stream, pain with urination, having to strain to begin the stream, erectile dysfunction, painful ejaculation, blood in the urine or sperm and pain/stiffness in your lower back, hips or upper thighs. Treatment options vary from surgery (prostatectomy) to chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy and even just surveillance.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. and 11th in Texas. Texas ranks 40th in the nation in suicide rate per 100,000 people. Unfortunately, its not that we have less suicides but more people. There were about 1.4 million suicide attempts in the U.S. in 2017 and 47,000 deaths (almost 3,800 in Texas). Men are three and a half more likely to die from suicide than women, though women attempt suicide more often.

The main reason for this difference is men choose more deadly methods of suicide, mainly firearms. There are 129 suicides per day, and in Texas one person dies every two hours from suicide. White males account for almost 70 percent of suicide deaths, with middle-aged white men (45-54) having the highest rate. Men account for 75 of suicides in the U.S. Worldwide, a man dies every minute by suicide.

The VA released a report in September that 17 veterans die every day from suicide. This does not include active duty suicides, reservists or service members who did not have overseas duty (which explains the reduction from the oft quoted 22/day numbers). Its still too high, no matter how you cook the numbers.

In conclusion, find yourself a good doctor that you trust and see them regularly. Dont be afraid to speak up and seek help when something is wrong. Stay in contact with your friends and family members and talk with them. Know the facts and be aware of your own body. We women want you guys around for the long hauleven if you do hog the remote control.

Holidays can be hazardous to health | Local News – Batesville Herald Tribune

Posted: November 23, 2019 at 7:49 am

As the holidays approach, you are sure to hear about the ways you can keep a healthy diet while enjoying traditions centered on food or maybe some tips and tricks to help you balance out those extra calories with physical activity.

There is no doubt that the holiday season brings many hazards to our health. Spikes in emergency medical events such as injuries, burns and food poisonings that occur around the holidays are evidence of those risks.

Some of our most beloved holiday traditions may be harmful to our health, but by taking some basic precautions, you can safely enjoy the season with your friends and family.

Most of us are at risk for the top holiday health hazard travel. One in three Americans travel over the holidays, packing the roads, runways and rails all across the country. With over 100 million drivers on the roads, it is no surprise that injuries from travel-related accidents increase during this season.

Stay safe while you travel by planning ahead. Give yourself plenty of time to arrive at your destination and remember to consider weather and congestion-related delays. Prepare your vehicle and travel with an emergency preparedness kit to protect yourself from winter conditions. Always designate a sober driver and put away distracting devices so everyone makes it home safe.

We all hope this time of year is warm and bright, but beware of the next health hazard fire. Nearly 47,000 fires occur during the holiday season each year and there are many hazards now that increase the risk of fire in your home.

Decorate safely by keeping combustible items at least 3 feet away from fireplaces, candles, radiators, heat vents and portable heaters. Check strands of lights for exposed wires, limit the number of items plugged into a single socket and turn off all lights and electronic decorations when you go to bed or leave home.

The deadliest and most common fires begin with the Christmas tree. Make sure your artificial tree is marked as flame retardant and your real tree has plenty of water. Install and routinely check smoke alarms in your home to protect you and your family from blazes.

Overindulging on holiday meals can leave us feeling bloated and sleepy, but the third holiday health hazard is far more unpleasant and dangerous food poisoning. Incidents of foodborne illness are at their highest in the days following major holidays.

Keep your meals delicious and safe by following basic food safety practices. Wash your hands often when handling food. Avoid cross contamination by keeping raw meat separate from other foods. Use separate cutting boards, plates and utensils for uncooked and cooked items. Use a thermometer to ensure foods are cooked to a safe temperature. Refrigerate any leftovers within two hours and consume or freeze leftovers within three to four days. Never taste a food to determine if it has spoiled.

Keep holiday hazards from becoming serious health risks by seeking help immediately. Do not put off a visit to the doctor about a health concern until after the holidays.

Tate & Lyle explores the relationship between nutritious ingredients and the glycemic response – NutraIngredients-Latam

A recent whitepaper by the ingredient supplier provides advice and recommendations on how manufacturers can develop products that enable consumers to have better awareness and control over their blood glucose, while also following a nutritious daily diet that meets guidelines.

Ingredient tools, such as fibers and sweeteners, that consider the glycemic response, are currently available to developers and producers to assess and implement in their food and beverage designs.

Understanding the prevalence of diabetes in our society, dietary intervention and the role manufacturers can play in developing beneficial products is vital, Tate & Lyle states. Ingredients then become the natural next area to analyze as they play a crucial part in the enjoyment, taste, and health, of foods and beverages.

Diabetes affects more than 425 million people around the world, International Diabetes Federation states, and this number is expected to reach to 629 million by 2045. Of those adults that are thought to live with diabetes, 50% are undiagnosed.

With increasing concerns over the high incidence of diabetes and metabolic syndrome, Dr Kavita Karnik, VP Global Nutrition at Tate & Lyle, confirms that providing information on managing blood glucose with healthy options is at the forefront of nutrition: We believe people should be able to make healthy food and drink choices by having access to low calorie, low sugar and high fiber options.

Measuring the glycemic response

Understanding blood glucose changes, otherwise known as the glycemic response, is crucial to support awareness on the importance of managing blood glucose, the role of dietary interventions and specific ingredients that can help people living with diabetes.

Glycemic response (GR) is defined as the post-prandial blood glucose response, which is caused when a person consumes a food that contains carbohydrates. It also considers the change in blood glucose concentration over time.

The World Health Organization (WHO) details diabetes as a chronic metabolic illness with heightened levels of blood glucose. If left untreated, the presence of elevated blood glucose can impair the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce any or sufficient amounts of the hormone insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition where the body does not respond to insulin which subsequently affects glucose metabolism.

Type 2 diabetes is a complex health condition, the risk of which is increased by a range of factors, including excessive intake of ingredients in our diets such as fat, sugar and calories. We know however that eating a healthier diet and exercising regularly are among the most important things people can do to reduce their personal risk, expressed Renata Cassar, Nutrition Manager - Latin America, Tate & Lyle.

According to the International Diabetes Federation, 80% of Type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented by taking proactive steps to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

At present, the highest rates of diabetes globally are in the Caribbean and North America, where 11% of the population lives with diabetes. South and Central America have global incidence rates of 7.6% compared with 4.2% of the African region.

Adopting the same method applied using the Latin America Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (LA-FINDRISC) for different Hispanic/Latino populations, each population will need to identify the most significant risk factors for each group of interest.

Latin American and US manufacturers are taking a number of specific measures to address the diabetes epidemic, namely nutrition surveys, which show that many of us are consuming too much sugar and calories in particular, Cassar noted.

Food manufacturers understand that they can play an important role in helping to reduce rates of diabetes across the world including in the US and Latin America by helping people to balance their diets by reducing intake of sugar and calories, added Cassar.

Tate & Lyle has found in its research that 66% of Mexican consumers, for example, want to eat less sugar.

But focusing on only one ingredient isnt helpful and we need to work towards healthier overall diets, Cassar emphasized. Therefore, the industry needs to reformulate food and drinks to reduce sugar, fat and overall calories and increase key nutrients like fibers, while maintaining taste and nutritional balance.

Fibers and foods that are high in soluble fires from oats, fruits, and legumes and specific dietary fibers such as beta-glucan, pectin, psyllium, polydextrose and soluble corn fiber have been found to lower the rise in blood glucose levels after eating a meal, for both people with and without diabetes.

Nutritive sweeteners, such as sucrose (table sugar) or fructose (the sugars found in fruits), are sweeteners that contribute to overall calorie intake. NNS, or non-nutritive sweeteners, on the other hand, are ingredients that can be used to sweeten food and drinks without adding calories or only adding negligible calories to our diets. Sucralose, stevia and monk fruit extract are all examples of these.

NNS use, or dietary components that sweeten with minimal or no carbohydrate or energy, was analyzed in an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics position paper. Its findings reveal that consumers can safely enjoy a range of nutritive and NNS when consumed within an eating plan that is guided by current nutrition recommendations as well as individual health goals and personal preferences.

Commenting on whether the regulatory and political landscape is supporting the efforts of manufacturers, Cassar shared: Sometimes its difficult for regulation to keep up with innovation. Other times, the regulators are the ones forcing the innovation. On occasion, we see that technology is enabling innovation that doesnt always fit into the established ways of assessing and approving ingredients and health claims.

Consumers understand the health benefits associated with consuming less sugar and fewer calories, and as such, healthier options are growing in popularity, Cassar relayed. Sharing insights on what is currently shaping the landscape, Cassar said: Governments across the world are now introducing policies that encourage manufacturers to reformulate their products.

Considering what more needs to be done, ingredient companies and food and beverage companies need to do a better job of working with academic institutions to effectively communicate these innovations and educate the key stakeholders involved in the food production chain, Cassar highlighted.

To tackle the diabetes epidemic, Cassar states that it is also crucial to understand that no single government, industry or regulator can tackle diabetes on its own.

Government authorities, regulators, policymakers, academic institutions and manufacturers of food, drink and ingredients need to work together, as collectively they are vital in encouraging innovation and bring more healthy options to markets as quickly as possible.

Tate & Lyle, for example, is a lead supporter in the Singaporean governments War on diabetes, which helps local businesses to help make their recipes healthier.

As busy people, with limited time to prepare our own meals, we are more reliant on prepared and packaged foods and drinks that we consume in and out of the home, said Cassar. It is therefore incumbent on players in the food industry to play their part in making these foods healthier.

Introducing texturants to lower fat, and introducing low-calorie sweeteners and fiber to lower sugar and fat, manufacturers are able to reduce calories and help customers support weight management, Tate & Lyle explained. Fibers and low-calorie sweeteners have the added benefit of supporting better blood glucose control.
