UAE weight-loss story: Meet the 24-year-old who lost 29kg in 6 months – Gulf News

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 7:53 pm

Bilawal Khan before (left) and after Image Credit: Supplied

Most people have negative self-talk. Thiswave of gloom that threatens to block out all the blue skies and all the silver linings. For Bilawal Khan, the thunder was two-fold; it came from himself and it came from everyone he knew. The constant refrain of lose that weight was tough.

The 24-year-old Pakistani, who has been in the UAE since he was a year old, says he used to love sweet things sugary drinks, chocolate, and so on. And no amount of playing field games such as football could balance out his intake. He kept packing on the kilos.

It wasnt only Khans self-esteem that was taking a hit though; it was also his sleep. As Khan would fall into a deep slumber each night, he would begin to snore. And snore. And snore. The sound was so jarring and so loud that his parents with whom he lives in Dubai would wake him up just to ask him to stop. But snoring is caused by the relaxing of throat muscles and the interaction of airwaves the more disturbed the breathing, the more sonorous it would seem. Each time the Khan would fall asleep, he would relax and so would begin the disturbing rhythms.

Tired of all the backlash, from friends and family, the 5-foot-2-inch tall expatdecided on a course of action once hed hit 108kg. He joined a gym. And he decided to rid himself of sugar drinks, at least for the moment. It was in November 1, 2018. The first phase was obviously very tough. In the gym, people were looking at me and saying, what he can do? My coach said, now they are making fun of you but there will be a time they will appreciate you.

Food for the first three months

"For the first three months, I used to put lemon and honey in hot water and I used to drink that that was my breakfast I used to only drink that. In the afternoon, I would have peanut butter and two slices of brown bread. At night I used to have salads," recalls Khan.

When he joined, Khan used to do 1.5hours cardio and 30 mins of high-intensity interval training. He used to shy away from people. I used to call my cousin and talk to him at the gym. I used to say, 'people are laughing, so I dont feel comfortable'. He said, just keep calm, use that as a motivation, dont take it in a bad way and one day you should tell them, see, one day you laughed at me, and you look at the results.

And its worked, exclaims Khan, over the phone. There was a time those people [who laughed at me] were appreciating me - on the last day when I was leaving my old gym, they said, you are the motivation for us.

Today, the sprightly 79kg part-time student, part-time working man says whats left of his long journey is stretch marks, a wariness of junk and sugary treats, and a built-up self-confidence thats not going anywhere anytime soon.

Now Im gaining [muscles], Im doing weight-lifting in the gym, says Khan. Now, I eat chicken breast, red beans and all the items which have protein in it. Its mostly boiled food, he says. But thats ok. Its a small price to pay to still the screaming voices. To quiet the negative self-talk.

Weight loss: Fried chicken addict ate nothing but KFC for a week and LOST weight but its not all good new – The Sun

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 7:52 pm

A FRIED chicken addict ate nothing but KFC for a week - and ended up losing weight.

Mike Jeavons loves the greasy fast food and wanted to see if he still enjoyed the meal if he had it seven days straight.

In a "Super Size Me" style experiment, he travelled to his local KFC in Bedfordshire on a daily basis to try out every item on the menu.

The 34-year-old spent 105 over the whole week and consumed an average of 2,000kcal every day.

He was surprised to step on the scales at the end of the "experiment" and find out he had lost 2lbs.

However, it wasn't all good news as his salt intake increased to 150 per cent of his recommended dietary allowance and his fat intake increased to a whopping 250 per cent.

Mike said: I love KFC and wanted to see if Id still love it if it was all I ate for a week.

After I stopped the experiment, the week after I felt constantly thirsty and had headaches. I also really missed KFC.

Its great as an occasional treat, but not something Id recommend eating every day

It was a lot of fun eating all this naughty food. Every day I would be really looking forward to mealtimes.

Its great as an occasional treat, but not something Id recommend eating every day. It was fun to do but I wouldnt want to do it again."

Ingredients such as salt, sugar and fat are sometimes added to processed foods to make their flavour more appealing and to extend their shelf life.

But this can lead to people eating more than their recommended amounts as they may not be aware of how much has been added to the food they are buying and eating, according to the NHS.

Experts warn that regularly consuming foods and drinks high in sugar increases your risk of obesity and tooth decay.

Obesity has been linked to 13 different types of cancer, as well as diabetes, heart diseaseand stroke.

Dietitian Helen Bond said: "If you are obese you are more at risk ofobesity related cancers, you are more at risk of heart diseaseand stroke.

"And also the fat content within junk food is quite high insaturated fats and trans fatsand they can increase the risk of bad cholesterol and over time that is not good news for yourheart health.

"Obesity is also linked to insulin resistance, pre-diabetes and also type 2 diabetes.

"In the long-term we know too much salt can cause raises in blood pressure."

8

On top of that, junk food doesn't contain anywhere near as much fibre as you need to maintain a healthy gut.

"If your diet is very heavily reliant on junk food then it is very difficult to get the 30g of fibre recommended per day," Helen added.

"Your gut bacteria needs food that is nourishing and we are learning more and more about the importance of gut health in relation to things like immunity, to weight to digestive issues.

"For people that have digestive issues where absorption [of vitamins and minerals] is a problem then making sure your gut is as healthy as possible goes hand-in-hand with a high fibre diet.

"There are some people with issues likeirritable bowel syndrome(IBS) where a high fibre diet may cause them problems, but generally people should be eating more of it in our diet."

Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager reflect on weighing themselves on TV – TODAY

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 7:51 pm

Making a plan and sticking to it isn't easy, but Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager have successfully completed day one of intermittent fasting!

The fourth hour duo inspired many TODAY with Hoda & Jenna fans after kicking off the fast by revealing their weights on TV.

On Monday's show, Hoda and Jenna stepped onto the scales and boldly revealed their weights: Hoda at 158 pounds and Jenna at 171 pounds.

"Y'all know what is plugged into my Fitbit for real?" Jenna said after stepping off the scale. "130 pounds. I weigh 40 more pounds than I tell everybody I do!"

Hoda then reminded Jenna that she just had a baby in August.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

On Tuesday's show, the ladies updated viewers on their intermittent fasting progress and reflected on Monday's weigh-in, reminding fans they're doing this "to be healthy" and not to lose weight.

"I was reminded why I don't weigh myself yesterday because I was playing with my kids, and I kept having that one number in my head," Jenna explained.

"I know," Hoda chimed in.

"And I'm like, 'You know what? No, no, no, no.' I don't want life to be controlled by a scale," Jenna continued.

"A number. I agree," Hoda added. "We're going to weigh ourselves periodically we don't know when but I think just to keep track. I think it is good every now and then even though I hate standing on the scale to find out, like, where you are just to get a benchmark."

While Jenna isn't a fan of consistently stepping on the scale, she realized seeing her weight like that was in a sense a wake-up call.

"I needed it because I think I've been delusional," Jenna said. "We're not saying we need to be some sort of number to be us. We're happy with us."

Hoda then told a story about trying on dresses to wear during the earlier hours of TODAY to complement co-anchor Savannah Guthrie's ensembles.

"They pulled out three things that would match (Savannah's), and I tried on all three," Hoda said. "And none of them fit."

"Guess how many dresses I tried on, too?" Jenna responded. "Three. Lucky No. 4 worked."

"Things are going to be different coming up in a month," Hoda said.

You go, ladies! We're supporting you every step of the way.

13 Alarming Images Of Glaciers Melting (12 People Who Dont Care) – TheTravel

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 7:51 pm

Glaciers are made up of fallen snow that becomes compressed into large ice masses over many years according to the National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC). When this ice becomes extremely dense, it begins to force out tiny air pockets which give the ice a distinct vibrant blue colour. Most glaciers are located in polar regions, but they can be found worldwide and can vary in size. Some glaciers can be as small as a football field or can grow to be hundreds of kilometers long. They cover great expanses of the world and store about 75 percent of the worlds freshwater. During the last Ice Age, about 32 percent of the world was covered in ice, however, today only about 10 percent of land area on earth is covered with ice sheets, ice caps, and glaciers.

Glaciers have been here since the last Ice Age, however, they are sensitive to global temperature shifts causing glacial melt and loss. According to many scientists, since the early twentieth-century, glaciers around the world have been retreating or disappearing at alarming rates. Many attribute this to the Industrial Revolution which increased unprecedented releases of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases. This caused the Earths current warming at such a fast rate that it caused the glaciers to melt and sea levels to rise.

If this warming continues and if all land ice melts, our sea levels will rise approximately 70 meters or 230 feet globally. This rise will cause many island nations to be overwhelmed and low-lying coastal regions to flood entirely. The consequences of glacial melt are severe and without changes they are irreversible. However, many dont believe that anything is changing. Here are 13 Images Of Glaciers Melting And 12 People Who Dont Care.

As MNN stated, the glaciers were here for 10,000 years and gone in 10. Fagre from National Geographic agrees that things that normally happen in geologic time are now happening during the span of a human lifetime. This is not natural. From Switzerland to the Arctic, to Peru, to Indonesia, to the ice in the sea, it is all disappearing extremely fast. These changes have been accelerated and dont show signs of being reversed. Large-scale societal changes need to be made to slow this process, however, this must happen on a global scale. Many dont believe this is happening though and continue to deny global warming.

David Bellamy was quoted stating that "Global warming at least the modern nightmare vision is a myth. I am sure of it and so are a growing number of scientists. But what is really worrying is that the world's politicians and policymakers are not. It is easier to believe that global warming is just a myth, but it has been scientifically proven. Researchers long ago predicted that global warming would have visible impacts. They determined that notable changes would be the first indicators; such as rising air and sea temperatures, reductions of sea ice, thawing permafrost, earlier snowmelt, and later ice freeze-up, and increasing storm intensity. All of those changes have now been recorded happening in Alaska, according to Amanda Lynch (an Australian researcher). This is no myth it is being scientifically proven to be happening.

NASA implemented a satellite that can track and monitor the planets melting polar ice caps. The satellite utilizes a laser to collect data and measure glaciers and floating sea ice. Further, this satellite has the ability to take measurements of the ice mass and thickness. Currently, NASA has found that arctic sea ice is now declining at a rate of 12.8 percent per decade (relative to the 1981 to 2010 average). Scientists can now collect information more precisely and try to better understand the processes and drivers that are behind glacial melt. However, their hard work, and this rate of melting wont decrease unless we begin to make changes.

Some who deny climate change claim that it is solely politically motivated. That information is incorrect. If scientists were politically motivated to confirm climate change, we could expect more of a division among scientists regarding conclusions. However, according to the Academics of Science, there is a consensus among 97 percent of scientists from over 80 countries that climate change real and a serious concern. Further, the IPCCconfirmed that scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal. With such global agreement among the scientific community, it is not plausible that the science is politically motivated. However, what we do about climate change is political.

According to World Watch, Arctic sea ice has thinned dramatically since the 1960s and 70s. They state that between the 60s and 70s, and the mid-1990s, the average thickness dropped from 3.1 meters to 1.8 meters, which is a decline of nearly 40 percent in less than 30 years. NASA confirmed that Arctic sea ice is thinning as a result of global warming, and noted that both the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly over the last several decades.

Many who dispute climate change argue that the scientific results are exaggerated and that this is a part of the natural cycle. It is true that the Earths climate has changed throughout history. Over 650,000 years there have been 7 cycles of glacier formation and recession, however, those were due to small changes in our Earths orbit, which then changed how much solar energy the Earth received. This is very different from what is happening now. Global warming currently is because of our activities. According to NASA, there is a 95 percent probability that these changes are a result of our activities, which is causing such an unprecedented change in our climate. This isnt an exaggeration; the changes have just escalated at an alarming and unnatural rate.

Currently, the U.S Centre for Atmospheric Research says if the current rate of global temperature rise continues, then there will be no ice left in the Arctic by 2040. The World Economic Forum stated that scientists now believe there will no longer be a frozen North pole. They are now finding that the Arctic is seeing its minimum coverage of summer ice, falling by over half its volume. This could have severe implications on ocean currents. Arctic ice is important for the gulf stream, which could impact Indian monsoon patterns and El Nio. According to Dr. Moon from the University of Colorado, the surge in scientific research and the increased amount of data, is all indicating that there is rapid and irreversible ice loss.

Many people who deny that climate change is real, claim that it is a scam and that global temperature warming is natural. They argue that science cannot prove that this increase isnt part of a normal climate cycle. However, NASA has proven this claim to be false using ice cores from Greenland, Antarctica and tropical mountain glaciers. These core samples show changes in greenhouse gas levels. These are confirmed when compared with evidence in tree rings, coral reefs, ocean sediments, and sedimentary rock. They state that this reveals that in comparison to past warming, the current warming is happening 10 times faster than the average in the past.

The Ward Hunt Ice Shelf is the largest single block of ice in the Arctic and is 3000 years old. It has stood for centuries until it split in the year 2000. Since then, the ice shelf has continued to break apart. This is concerning for obvious reasons, but it has also had a serious and lasting impact on humans and wildlife. The Disraeli Fiord, an epi-shelf lake was located in the ice shelf. When the shelf broke, it drained this lake and threatened a rare ecosystem. The loss of this micro-ecosystem will drastically impact the food chain in the Arctic Ocean and is a great concern to NASA.

The Verge reported that a recent poll discovered that more than half of Americans think that climate change wont affect them personally. According to a Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, many see it as a distant problem that wont impact them until 2100 or later. However, it is impacting us already. Glacial melt is the largest indicator of this. If we dont act soon, those impacts are going to be harder felt sooner than we anticipate. Temperatures are going up worldwide, heat waves or extreme weather events (such as hurricanes and wildfires) are becoming increasingly common, critical water sources will disappear, critical species will go extinct, and soon we will see entire nations being overwhelmed by rising oceans.

NASAs satellite laser readings are now showing that the edges of Greenlands Ice Sheet are shrinking. Although Greenlands Helheim Glacier has remained intact for centuries, in 2000 scientists began to notice that the glacier was disappearing. By 2005, they noticed it had receded 7.24kms, at an average rate of 110 ft per day. Annually, the Greenland ice sheet has lost 281 billion tonnes of ice from 1993 to 2016. If this continues, it will cause sea-levels to rise by 20 feet. Ironically, this has now enabled new oil and gas exploration projects, only making the situation worse.

The science is any but underwhelming. It is becoming more pertinent to act, as the science reports terrifying changes. MNN reported that the Chacaltaya glacier has completely disappeared, even though a study on Bolivian glaciers warned that this would happen in 1998. At the time, that report was dismissed as overly dramatic. It has now been officially declared that the glacier no longer exists. This now threatens both water and power supplies in the Andean region. MMN further stated that melting has tripled in the last decade, and it is expected that several adjoining areas could have less than 30 years to survive. This is not underwhelming.

The South Pole has around 90 percent of the Earths ice, which makes up about 70 percent of the worlds freshwater. In some places, it can even be around 7000 feet thick. Antarctica is larger than the USA and Mexico combined. The Washington Post reports that scientists are now warning that the Western part of the ice sheet is unstable and could trigger over a 10-foot rise in the sea level. If all of the ice in the Antarctic melts, the sea will rise by 200 feet. This would completely wipe out island nations and the majority of coastal cities.

Arguably one of the biggest scams perpetrated on the people of the world would be calling climate change a hoax. A few public officials have become well-known for their denial of climate change due to their interest in preserving industries that are the worst for climate change. The Verge reports that a study has found that people tend to listen to what their leaders say, so this influence has caused a drop in people who believe in global warming. Ignoring sound scientific findings and reporting differently, is a scam on world citizens.

When Glacier National Park was established in 1910 there were around 150 glaciers, however, now there are fewer than 30 left after a century (most left have shrunk by two-thirds). Fagre from National Geographic predicts that within 30 years most, if not all, of the park's glaciers will disappear. This has now threatened water supplies for millions according to the Independent and is a concerning indicator for what is to come in the future.Dr. Moon from the University of Colorado reports that this pattern has been seen repeating all over the world from Patagonia to the Himalayas.

Evidently, things are happening right now. National Geographic reports that the snows of Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, have melted more than 85 percent since 1912. The glaciers in the Garhwal Himalayas, in India, are retreating so fast that researchers believe that most Central and Eastern Himalayan glaciers could be gone by 2035, which will remove essential water resources that support almost a billion people. Finally, National Geographic warns that in the Western region of Himachal Pradesh there is evidence of almost 3 feet of annual ice loss, which has doubled in the past decade from the prior decades record.

MNN reports that European glaciers have often been the most impacted by global warming. The Alps (often referred to as the water tower of Europe) contain around 40 percent of Europes freshwater supply. Concerning findings reported that the Matterhorn (a famous Swiss mountain) has seen almost half of its glaciers disappear. This has actually created a need for Switzerland and Italy to redraw their borders and has made many concerned about water supplies. To make matters worse, The Independent wrote that climate models are projecting that 52 percent of all the small glaciers in Switzerland will be gone in 25 years.

Concern for the effects of global warming is not being politically correct, this is a concern for our survival. Polar ice, for example, reflects large amounts of solar energy back into space which helps keep temperatures coolers on earth. Once our ice melts, this exposes land and water surfaces which instead retain that solar heat. This leads to even more melting and creates a cycle increasing and accelerating the warming process according to World Watch. This will make the effects much worse, much faster having dangerous consequences for our survival.

Global News has reported that climate change has caused glaciers in British Columbia, Yukon and Alberta to retreat faster than at any time in history, threatening to raise water levels and create simultaneously created deserts. David Hik (an ecology professor at Simon Fraser University) said the region is one of the hotspots for warming and the data is shocking.Current estimates are that 80 percent of the mountain glaciers in Western Canada will disappear in the next 50 years. The Peyto Glacier is an essential example, as it has lost about 70 percent of its mass in the last 50 years. This pattern is happening in the St. Elias Ranges as well where they have lost approximately one-quarter of ice cover since the 1950s.

It has been proven and confirmed that humans have caused global warming. The Journal of Science confirmed that our emissions accounted for around 69 percent of the loss of glaciers from 1991-2010. Warmer temperatures after the Little Ice Age affected the glaciers, and glaciers would be melting without any human influence according to Live Science. However, the melt would not be happening as rapidly as it is today if it weren't for man-made contributions, like greenhouse gases. We must take responsibility for how we have impacted our environment.

Around 97 percent of scientists agree that natural climate cycles were not enough to cause such severe changes in the Earths temperature according to National Geographic. Rather, scientists found that aerosols, the production of electricity using coal and petroleum, and also the use of fossil fuels for transportation and in industrial production, has impacted our environment and caused this warming. Live Science wrote that Ben Marzeion (from the University of Innsbruck in Austria) stated that "in a sense, we got a confirmation that by now, it is really mostly humans that are responsible for the melting glaciers.

If only this was just propaganda. Unfortunately, that is not the case and this is really happening. Many believe that these images are just meant to act as propaganda, but they are real. Scientists are finding that wildlife is already suffering from global ice-melt, specifically at the poles. World Watch reports that marine mammals, sea birds, and animals that depend on food found on the ice edge are struggling. In northern Canada, scientists have found concerning evidence that polar bears are losing weight due to loss of ice cover. Further, in Antarctica the loss of sea ice with rising air temperatures has changed the habitats of penguins and seals, negatively impacting breeding and feeding patterns.

According to Dr. Moon from the University of Colorado, at the current rate of global warming, billions of people will be forced to leave their homes because of rising seas, crucial sources of water will run dry, and wildlife will lose sources of nutrients and shelter. Without ice, ocean temperatures will rise which will mean more intense weather systems. Most cities lying in coastal regions will be inundated due to rising sea levels, causing many populations to be displaced. Where there isnt flooding there will actually be new desert areas, according to Global News.

According to Live Science, even if climate change from natural and human causes stopped right now, the glaciers would continue to melt and would still raise ocean levels by 7 centimeters during this century. However, that will not happen. The reality is that we arent currently doing enough to reverse the impact of climate change. As temperatures continue to rise, we will lose more glaciers and ice sheets. Many argue that this will provide more water for us, however, this isnt sustainable. The negative consequences are severe and could threaten life as we know it. To do nothing ensures our collective failure.

The Independent reports that unfortunately, much of the glacier and ice sheet loss is irreversible. However, scientists agree that we can slow down these impacts if we implement measures globally. We must all agree to switch to better sources of energy such as solar, wind and other forms, and reduce our use of coal, gas, and oil. We need to make a collective investment to develop new technologies that will ensure we keep global temperatures as low as possible. Unless substantial climate action is taken we can expect this pattern to continue for millennia.

Are Nuts Fruits? – Healthline

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 7:51 pm

Nuts are one of the most popular snack foods. Theyre not only tasty but also good for you, especially when it comes to heart health.

However, you may wonder which food group nuts belong to fruits or vegetables?

This article digs into the details.

To understand whether nuts are vegetables or fruits, its important to understand the differences between these two food groups.

Fruits and vegetables are divided into botanical and culinary classifications.

Botanical classification is based on the structure and functions of plants. While fruits grow from the flowers of plants and have seeds for reproduction, vegetables are all other parts of the plant, including the roots, stems, and leaves (1).

On the other hand, culinary classification depends on taste. In this case, fruits tend to be sweet or tart and work best in desserts, snacks, smoothies, pastries, or juices. Conversely, vegetables are mild, savory, or bitter and work better in sides, stews, soups, salads, and casseroles.

Botanically, fruits grow from the flowers of plants and contain seeds, while vegetables are the plants other parts. Yet, from a culinary perspective, fruits are sweet or tart, while vegetables are mild, savory, or bitter.

Botanically, nuts are classified as a fruit that has a single edible seed with a hard, inedible outer shell. Theyre considered indehiscent, which means that their shell doesnt open when ripe (2).

However, a lot of foods that people consider nuts are really the seeds of drupes fruits whose flesh surrounds a single shell with a seed inside (3).

For example, almonds, cashews, Brazil nuts, walnuts, pecans, macadamia nuts, pistachios, pine nuts, and most other nuts are botanically the seeds of drupes.

Meanwhile, true nuts include chestnuts, acorns, and hazelnuts.

Interestingly, peanuts one of the most popular nuts in the world are technically a legume and thus botanically a vegetable. However, peanuts nutrient profile and characteristics are closer to that of other nuts.

Nutritionally, most nuts nutrient composition resembles legumes rather than fruit due to their high protein content.

From a culinary perspective, the term nuts is more relaxed and in line with what most people think are nuts large, oily kernels found within a shell.

Botanically, most nuts are the seeds of a fruit, while true nuts such as chestnuts, acorns, and hazelnuts are fruits in and of themselves. Peanuts are the exception, as theyre legumes and thus technically vegetables.

Although most nuts are botanically considered seeds, theyre still very healthy.

Nuts are an excellent source of plant-based protein, fat, fiber, antioxidants, and key vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E, magnesium, copper, and selenium (4).

In addition, they have been linked to many health benefits, such as reduced inflammation and improved heart health, blood sugar control, and digestion (5, 6, 7, 8).

Current dietary guidelines in the United States treat nuts as a protein source rather than fruits or vegetables due to their high protein content (9).

However, as nuts are also high in calories, 0.5 ounces (14 grams) of nuts or seeds is considered equivalent to 1 ounce (28 grams) of other protein sources, such as meat, poultry, eggs, or seafood.

As such, you should eat nuts in small portions and in place of other protein-rich foods (9).

Nuts are versatile and can be enjoyed whole, chopped, or as nut butters. Theyre widely available and can be bought roasted, raw, salted, unsalted, and flavored.

That said, some packaged varieties harbor additives, including salt, sugar, and preservatives. Thus, its best to check the ingredient list and choose raw or dry-roasted options when possible.

Nuts are a scrumptious food loaded with protein, healthy fat, fiber, and several vitamins and minerals. Theyre best consumed in moderation due to their high calorie count.

Most nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, and cashews, are botanically defined as seeds rather than fruit. Yet, a handful of true nuts like chestnuts and hazelnuts are technically fruits.

The lone exception is peanuts, which are a legume.

From a culinary perspective, nuts are widely utilized as a plant-based protein and make a healthy, simple addition to your diet.

‘I Gained 70 Lbs. After A Personal Tragedy. I Started Strength Training To Cope And Got Stronger Than Ever’ – msnNOW

Briana Shaffer Briana Shaffer gained weight after the death of her best friend. One day, she had a wakeup call and began practicing the 80-20 rule and overhauled her health.Hi! My name is Briana Shaffer (@brianakfitness), 25, and I'm from Carlsbad, California. I'm the CEO and owner of a fitness apparel corporation (check it out at @brianakcollection). A personal tragedy led to a period of weight gain for me, but after a wakeup call moment I decided to change my lifestyle and lost 70 pounds in the process.

After my best friend died in a car accident, it turned my world upside down. I gained 70 pounds and became depressed. My doctor told me if I didnt make a lifestyle change, I could end up having even more serious health issues down the line.

So I finally said enough was enough. And in September of 2015, I start logging everything that I was eating, a suggestion from my doctor. I was 190 pounds at only 5-feet, 4-inches when my weight-loss journey began.

I feel like its been awhile since Ive talked about my weight loss journey so here it goes. - Back in 2015, I was 70 lbs overweight. I had developed binge eating problems, depression, and lost every once of confidence that I had. I would go through the Taco Bell drive thru order 2 burritos..eat them in 2 seconds and then head home for dinner. I would sit in the parking lot and feel so empty eating my food. I thought it would make me feel better but afterwards I would feel sick to my stomach. My best friend died in 2012 and if affected everything for me. It ripped out my heart, punched me in the face, and robbed me of my happiness. I felt alone, empty, miserable. All I wanted to do was eat and feel sorry for myself. When people asked me where I was going in life..I didnt know. I didnt even want to be here. I struggled a lot. - Flash forward, I have now lost 70 lbs and kept it off. Im in the best shape of my life at 25. Im the happiest Ive ever been. My mental health has skyrocketed. I now know Im a badass b*tch haha that can do anything. I own a freaking corporation. I have an amazing team, an incredible community that weve all built. I live by the beach with my high school sweetheart and the most adorable fur babies. I do what I love every single day. I feel empowered and fueled every single day. There isnt a thing that I cant handle. Next time you think youre stuck..next time youre sitting on the floor crying wanting to give up..DONT. Fix your crown and keep going. Theres nothing in this life that you cant have. You have to be willing to work..and I really mean work. Do it for the right reasons. Make sure youre heart is 100% in it. Go after whatever it is that you want and dont stop fighting. It will get hard..you will fail, but hey thats what makes it even more worth it.

I started meal prepping and followed the 80/20 rule with my diet: 80 percent of my diet was nutritious, healthy foods, and 20 percent was treats. The 80/20 style of eating has worked best for me because I am able to still enjoy the treats I love here and there, rather than only eating healthy all day every day, which isn't always sustainable. What didnt work was trying to eat chicken and broccoli every single day.

The 80/20 rule has also helped keep me from binging over the weekend. If I let myself have a cookie or a decadent, special meal during the week, I'm not looking ahead at the weekend like this rare time I have to go crazy. It's all about balance.

The 80/20 diet (although you really don't even have to think of it as a diet at all!) is also more maintainable for my lifestyle. I am still able to go out with family and friends without feeling anxious about what to eat.

Eventually, I got a gym membership and started lifting weights five times a week. Strength training helped me cope with the death of my best friend, and after every single workout, I felt stronger, happier, and more confident.

My workout schedule is currently: two full-body days, two leg days, and one arm day. I also decided that its not best for me to weigh myself. Im all about non-scale victories. Instead, I go off progress photos and how my clothes fit.

Fitness is so overwhelming, and I think people complicate it. Ive always taken it one step at a time with working out and my diet. I didn't just wake up one day able to work out five days a weekit took time and practice.

I also had to learn to let go of guilt. If you slack off one day, dont beat yourself up. Start fresh the next day. Feeling guilty will only hurt you and your progress. It's important to be kind to yourself and appreciate even those small accomplishments. You should be doing this because you love your body and want to put it first. Be proud of those baby steps that will eventually add up to the bigger goal.

You dont need supplements, weight loss teas, and pills. You dont have to give up food that you love or miss out on functions. Its all about finding that balance.

It took me two years to lose the weight. Starting my health and fitness journey changed my whole life. It helped my self-confidence in addition to my physical health. It has also helped me build a solid foundation to continue working out long term. And honestly. the biggest change has been on my mental health.

Fitness gave me a platform to help other women achieve the same self love that I now have. Fitness also opened up the doors to me now running my own company and doing what I love every single day.

A Day Of Trying To Stream Xbox One Games While On The Go – Kotaku

Posted: November 20, 2019 at 7:51 pm

When Microsofts video game streaming service, Project xCloud, began its beta last month, there were only four games available to test. Now there are over 50. I spent a day taking the service on the road with me to see how its working.

Currently, the service streams games from Microsofts servers to a smartphone or tablet and requires a bluetooth controller, Xbox One or otherwise, to start playing. In the future, Microsoft plans for xCloud to also stream to PCs, support touch controls, and carry save data over seamlessly from your main Xbox console. While the current version is pretty barebones, the straightforwardness is nice. Just start up the app, select a game, and start playing.

As someone who often commutes, sometimes long distances (Kotaku is based in New York City; I live in Philadelphia), Im uniquely situated to benefit from the convenience and portability of video game streaming. If xCloud can let me take an Xbox One (and eventually a Project Scarlet) with me wherever I go, it could fundamentally change how video games fit into my life. Of course, so would self-driving cars. Its not clear yet just how close either of those futures is.

I come to. It slowly dawns on me that it is not the weekend and in fact only Tuesday. I prepare the coffee machine, put some 10-grain cereal in the microwave for my partner, and set it for three and a half minutes. This is precisely enough time to boot up the xCloud app on my phone, load Borderlands 2, and get through the opening credits. The only thing that feels different is instead of staring at a 40-some-odd-inch display in my living room, Im staring at my Pixel 3 on the kitchen counter and simultaneously noticing where last nights chili has left a stain on the formica.

The Microwave pings; I deliver breakfast and take my coffee upstairs to get a shower. Borderlands 2 comes into the bathroom with me, not because Im intent on playing but because I take my phone everywhere. Usually I sit it in the shower caddy and play a podcast. Today I spend my precious few minutes under the scalding hot water listening to Claptrap make jokes which were never funny but which, over the course of several playthroughs, Ive grown fond of anyway. After dressing, I take a few moments to run around in the game. Its responsive, although the audio momentarily cuts out here or there. The only place I can detect a hair of lag is in the menu system where the analog sticks on my Xbox One controller begin to feel ever so slightly sluggish.

After driving to drop my 5-month-old off at my parents, ladling leftover chilli into a tupperware container, and generally doing a bunch of other necessary things which are not playing Borderlands 2, I leave the house to grab the bus at the top of my street.

This should be the first big test of xClouds capacity to seamlessly fill the lulls in my existence over my phones unlimited high-speed Verizon connection. It is instead a test of whether I can juggle my coffee, backpack, phone, and Xbox controller without only one or two dirty looks from the people around me. This means means wedging my backpack between my legs, resting my phone on top, and clutching the controller in a right-handed death grip. There are no games that can successfully be played this way, but I manage to load Crackdown 3s campaign. It also begins with a long cutscene. Terry Crews monologue goes off without a hitch. Then the bus hits a pothole and displaced coffee lightly sprays my setup.

A few minutes later, its time to transition to the subway. Once Im resituated, I drain my coffee and put the thermos away so I can focus on Crackdown. Phillys blue line is above ground for the first half dozen stops or so. During this time, the game occasionally stutters, but nothing too bad. Instead of a constant feeling of latency, slowdowns seems to come and go all at once. Its not ideal, but its better than feeling like everything I tell Crews to do is on a split-second delay. While theres still a greater delay than if I were playing on my Xbox One at home, its mostly imperceptible while I squint at my phones small screen, surrounded by strangers whom the operator implores, for the love of god, not to go between cars while were in motion.

Then we go underground at 46th street. The game immediately cuts out, and xCloud sends me back to the main menu. While I can generally stream music, refresh twitter, and send emails underground, stream Crackdown my phone cannot. Anyway, I need to be ready to make a mad dash at my stop to make my train to New York.

On the train, I pull down the tray from the seat in front of me and fashion a makeshift phone stand out of my journal and some napkins. This time I boot up Halo 5, opting for a quickplay multiplayer match. I assume its going to be a dumpster fire, but surprisingly, it works! Im loaded into a game of Slayer with seven other people and somehow manage to get my first kill within seconds. Everything works, from shooting to throwing grenades to sprinting. Occasionally the screen melts into a pool of random colors and shapes, after which Im usually killed or find myself running into a wall, but I dont get disconnected. What would be dreadful for a high-stakes competitive match feels surprisingly satisfying for being on a train going over 100 miles an hour. I wish I could grind through any number of battle passes on my console games this way.

At work, I switch to the office wifi, which performs noticeably worse than my phone. I try a smattering of games between other tasks. Mark of the Ninja, a single-player indie stealth game from several years ago, plays flawlessly for the opening level. Ace Combat 7 struggles. While it feels inherently impressive to be flying through its beautiful skies on such a small device, the occasional lapses in control send me spiralling into the water.

After leaving work but before running to catch my Megabus, I check a GameStop to see if they have any phone mounts for my controller. The guy tells me that they are only really sold online currently but suggests I try a Best Buy several blocks away which, because its in the opposite direction of my ride home, I have to abandon.

Fortunately, but weirdly, the bus was mostly empty. Do my former Mega-ites know something I dont? If I must go out in a blaze of double-decker glory, I decide it would only be fitting if I were playing Forza Horizon 4 when shit went sideways. The game was gorgeous when it came out last year and looks remarkably crisp and vibrant on my phone. Steering has the same problems I encountered with Ace Combat, leaving me to veer off course as I try to overcorrect during the lag. Ive never set record times in Forza, and Im certainly not going to do it when the picture quality constantly crashes, but for the periods when everything is running smoothlychunks of 10 secondsits fun to be gunning it down an English countryside in a McLaren Senna while a 100-ton steel death trap shuttles you through Northern Jerseys industrial parks.

Back in Philly, I switch to Soulcalibur VI for the last leg of my trip. Fighting games are fast and unpredictable, and I expect the game to be a jittery mess. In an arcade mode match, I only suffer one framerate crash. The music occasionally cuts out, but the fighters movements (Mitsurugi, always Mitsurugi) look and feel fluid enough. I could conceivably play through the games entire incomprehensible story mode this way. Instead I switch to an online match where I promptly get my ass kicked, but not because of any technical glitches. Ive played online matches in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at home with more lag and latency than what I experienced streaming a few matches of Soulcalibur VI.

I play one more match at home on my own Wifi. Parts of it are better than the previous one Id just played on the bus. Parts of it are worse. Throughout the day, Id done speed tests to measure my connection. Whether on Wifi or LTE, my speeds varied wildly, sometimes from 5Mbps (very slow) to 25Mbps (fast), sometimes within the span of a few seconds (the service requires a minimum of 10Mbps down). In the end xCloud used 2.54 GB of data for somewhere just over an hour of usage.

The hardest thing about getting a firm grasp of any streaming technology is isolating all of the other variables involved. In xClouds case, thats my phone, my cell providers coverage and signal strength, and the Bluetooth connection to my controller. Ironing out all of those kinks seems like a monumental task for a single company, even one as big as Microsoft or Google.

For those low-key moments, the experience doesnt necessarily need to be perfect. While Im impressed by how well xCloud performs in testing, the most appealing thing about it, at least right now, is the already large library of games it works for. Performance matters a lot when youre sitting down to play a big game youre really psyched about, but when youre casually trying something out, xClouds current library of 50-plus games is an enticing way to catch up during downtime.

Mom Credits Fertility Turnaround to Organic Products, Diet – NBC4 Washington

Like many women, Zeina Alkhalaf struggled to get pregnant.

The Fairfax, Virginia, resident was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition that affected her hormones, when she was in the 20s. She turned to in vitro fertilization to have her daughter, Faye.

"I was very confused," she said. "I felt like my body had failed me."

Years later, when she wanted to expand her family, she turned to fertility treatments again. She got pregnant but suffered a devastating late-term miscarriage and was hospitalized.

Determined to take control of her health, Alkhalaf starting doing research something she's familiar with as she pursues a doctorate in maternal and child health. She read medical journals and dug into the science of the chemicals in our cosmetics, personal care products and food.

"For me it was a really big shock," she said about what she found.

Although some individual products may contain trace amounts of chemicals that have been linked to cancer and infertility, the personal care product industry says the amounts are small and the products are safe.

"All materials can be used safely. It's all about the dose," said Dr. Jay Ansell, a vice president of the Personal Care Products Council.

The group is the leading national trade association representing the $48 billion personal care product industry in the United States.

But epidemiologist and George Mason University researcher Dr. Anna Pollack said that when it comes to safe levels of chemicals and long-term risk, no one really knows.

"In real life we're not just ever exposed to one thing at a time," she said. "As more and more studies are done using these newer methods, it will give us a better picture of what our health risk may be."

Alkhalaf didn't wait for science to tell her what she saw first-hand. She switched to toothpaste, deodorant and makeup with fewer chemicals, and started eating an organic diet. She said her menstrual cycles regulated, her mood improved and her hormones leveled off.

"I could not believe that there was such as a huge change in just small things that I was, you know, switching in my house," she said.

The biggest change of all: She got pregnant, naturally.

Baby Yusef is now seven months old. Alkhalaf said her doctors can't explain it. It's not clear if she got pregnant because of the changes she made to her personal care products or diet, or if it was something else entirely.

She shares her story on a blog called Confessions of an Organic Mama. She writes about alternative products she's tried and loved. She said she does it because she wants to help others.

"I was like, I need to be able to share this information with everyone that I can. They need to know about what's going on," Alkhalaf said.

She admitted that it sometimes can be expensive to use alternative products. But she considers it an investment in her family's health.

The cosmetics industry maintains that their products are safe and says the science speaks for itself.
