Weight loss diet: Eating dinner for breakfast could help you shed fat fast – Express.co.uk

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:45 am

Research from Loma Linda University suggests the best way to lose weight comes down to the frequency and timing of meals.

Dr Hana Kehleova, one of the studys authors, said the bottom line is to make breakfast the biggest meal of the day, have a medium lunch and then a small dinner.

Data from more than 50,000 adults was collected by researchers at the university to form the study.

Nutritionists then analysed the adults eating habits and weight over a seven-year period.

The results revealed four factors help decrease BMI - eating one or two meals per day, fasting for 18 hours, eating breakfast and making breakfast or lunch the largest meal of the day.

The findings were released in the Journal of Nutrition.

The study authors wrote: Our results suggest that in relatively healthy adults, eating less frequently, no snacking, consuming breakfast, and eating the largest meal in the morning may be effective methods for preventing long-term weight gain.

Other experts have stressed the importance of eating breakfast.

Milton Stokes, R.S., author of Flat Belly Diet! For Men, recently revealed eating breakfast is essential for weight loss.

Explaining why, he told Mens Fitness: Its like putting logs on a woof-burning stove. You need that initial input of fuel to get your metabolism going for the day.

The aim should be to intake around 400-600 calories within an hour of waking up.

Milton advised focusing on protein, healthy fats and fibre, as these will leave dieters feeling fuller for longer.

Jorge Cruise, author of The Belly Fat Cure, advises people eat eggs with avocado in the morning.

He said: Avocados are natures ideal fruit for weight loss. They replace sugar with appetite-curbing good fat.

David Grotto, R.D., author of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life, says a shake with whey protein is the way forward.

He said: Whey is rich in branches chain amino acids, which stimulate muscle growth. The more muscle you have, the greater the fat-burning capacity of your metabolism.

This could be the REAL reason you’re gaining weight it’s nothing to do with diet – Daily Star

GETTY

One of the biggest decisions of your life could be making you fat, new research reveals.

Settling down or tying the knot can come with many benefits, but it could also make you gain weight.

This finding comes from a new study by the University of Baths School of Management.

The researchers used over a decade of data from 9,000 men in the United States and found married men had a significantly higher body mass index than single men.

The most significant weight gain occurred after these married men became fathers for the first time.

However, the researchers found men who divorced in those ten years had a significant drop in their BMI following the divorce.

TOWIE's Lauren Goodger shows off the results from her fitness regime in a bikini on the beach.

Study author, Jordan Syndra believes the reason you gain weight in a relationship is because you might start to eat meals more regularly, or find yourself in more social situations with food.

Jordan added that people who are single might want to stay that way in order to stay fit.

She said: It's useful for individuals to understand which social factors may influence weight gain, especially common ones such as marriage and parenthood, so that they can make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

The researcher continued to say that men who want to be mindful of their BMI should practice a healthy lifestyle.

For married men who want to avoid BMI increases that will mean being mindful of their own changing motivation, behaviour and eating habits.

Given major public health concerns about obesity, understanding more about the social science factors that can cause weight fluctuation is important.

5 People Have Died After Getting Weight-Loss Balloons – SELF

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:44 am

In the few years they've been on the market in the U.S., weight-loss balloons have been making headlines as a cheaper, less intense alternative to invasive weight-loss surgeries. However, according to an FDA alert posted last week, the gastric balloons may come with unforeseen consequences: Five people died in 2016 within weeks of receiving their balloons.

"All five reports indicate that patient deaths occurred within a month or less of balloon placement," the FDA alert reads. "In three reports, death occurred as soon as one to three days after balloon placement." Of the five patients who died, four had received the Orbera balloon, which is manufactured by Apollo Endosurgery, and one had received Reshape Medical Inc.'s dual balloon system. A third type of balloon, the Obalon, has also recently been approved by the FDA, but was not linked to any deaths in the report.

Essentially, the balloons are inserted via the esophagus, placed in the stomach, and inflated with saline for six months, Amir A. Ghaferi, M.D., assistant professor of surgery at the University of Michigan, tells SELF. "They occupy space in the stomach and give a sensation of fullness, the idea being that patients will eat less [without altering] their anatomy in any permanent way." But, he says, the balloons are far from perfect. In addition to causing nausea as your stomach adjusts to having a foreign, inflatable thing inside, these balloons might come with even more serious side effects.

The new FDA alert comes just a few months after the agency advised health care providers to pay especially close attention to patients receiving the balloons. In that letter, sent in February of this year, the agency detailed two major complications connected to the balloons: over-inflation and acute pancreatitis, an infection in the pancreas. If the balloons become over-inflated, they can cause stomach pain and difficulty breathingand may need to be surgically removed.

However, the FDA hasn't identified exactly what caused each death. And the agency can't say for certain whether or not the weight-loss balloons actually had anything to do with the deaths. So, for now, it's simply reminding everyone that serious complications are possibleand that doctors should monitor their patients closely after giving them the balloons.

"Patient safety is a key priority in everything we do at Apollo Endosurgery and we take adverse event reporting obligations related to our products very seriously," Todd Newton, CEO of Apollo Endosurgery said in a statement. "The FDA letter is an important reminder to the physician community that obesity is a serious disease and many obese patients are affected by one or more co-morbid conditions due to their obesity," he continued, suggesting that the company believes it's these other conditions that contributed to the deaths.

Dr. Ghaferi also points out that this is a relatively small number of cases compared to the hundreds of thousands of people who have gotten the balloons successfully worldwide. He also wonders whether the intense scrutiny the balloons have received is due, at least in part, to our society's bias against those seeking treatment for obesity. "Every time there is a treatment for obesity that's different from diet and exercise, people feel like its a cop-out, it's a shortcut," he says. "Its not viewing obesity as the chronic disease that it is that requires treatmentsometimes invasive treatment."

Obviously, the balloons aren't the right choice for everyone. But people looking for any kind of treatment deserve access to safe, reliable options.

7 Legumes You Cannot Ignore Because Of Their Weight Loss Aid Properties – South Florida Reporter

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:44 am

Youll hear the term legumes a lot when it comes to food and dieting. Legumes are often recommended to people who want to cut out carbs or meat. Theyre supposed to give you a range of nutrients and benefits.

Theyre excellent for weight loss. Legumes help to give your body sustained energy, keeping you feeling fuller for longer. Youll also consume fewer calories than you would if you ate carbs or even some meats.

But you dont just want to spend your time eating any legume. You want to eat these specific seven ones for their weight loss aid properties.

Stock Up on Chickpeas

The first legume you want to add to your diet is the chickpea. Also known as garbanzo beans, chickpeas are full of nutritional benefits but are lower in calories than many other legumes out there. Theyre also excellent for substituting grains and carbs while keeping your energy levels support throughout the day.

Its the fiber count in chickpeas that helps the most. Fiber is a necessary food group that keeps your digestive system working. The body finds it harder to break down fiber than carbs and fats so that it will get rid of it slowly. Youll feel fuller naturally since the body isnt able to get rid of the food. With the slower breakdown, youll also find that you dont get the sugar rush that many carbs will give you.

The fiber will also help to support the digestive system. When your digestive system is working effectively, your body absorbs all the right nutrients and will balance the hormones. The immune system works properly, meaning your mental and physical health benefit. You wont give into the emotional food cravings as much as if you didnt eat chickpeas, helping you keep your calorie intake down.

Hummus is made with chickpeas. Its a popular dip for vegetables, and you can make it at home. You can also roast chickpeas with multiple flavors to get the perfect snack. Of course, you can also add whole chickpeas to casseroles, soups, and other recipes.

For those who arent over-keen on the texture of chickpeas, try soaking them for a while. This just helps to soften them when eating raw.

This Is How Long It Takes Most People To Lose 10 Pounds – Women’s Health

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:44 am

Its definitely good to hear that it takes most people longer than five weeks to drop 10 pounds (you're not alone if the scale seems stuck!), and that its also doable within three months or so. But if youre trying to drop 10 pounds, its important to keep this in mind: Everyone moves at their own pace.

There are calculations to predict the calorie deficit needed for someone to lose a pound of weight. However in reality, people lose weight as different rates, says Beth Warren, R.D.N., founder of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Living a Real Life With Real Food. Fatima Cody Stanford, M.D., instructor of medicine and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, agrees. Its not the rate of weight loss that matters, per se, she says. Its the sustainability of the weight loss. People who are obese, for example, might lose weight at a very fast rate, she says, while others with less excess weight to lose may move at a slower paceand the actual rate doesnt matter as much as someones ability to keep the weight off.

While its tempting to want to drop weight quickly, Warren says its important to manage your expectations and go about it in a smart, healthy way. Losing weight through unhealthy methods could just burn off water and muscle weight, which youll quickly gain back, she says.

Scott Keatley, R.D., of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy, recommends starting with small changes before moving on to a new challenge. For example, you might want to try eliminating your late-night snacking habit and adding a serving of vegetables to every meal before trying an entirely new diet plan. "Many patients want to do everything all at once to lose the weight but it's generally not feasible and people give up after a brief period of time only to gain more weight back," he says.

Check out some of the weirdest weight-loss trends through history:

If youre not losing at the pace youd like, Warren says theres likely somethingor several thingstripping you up. I often find with clients that they may not be losing as fast as they can because of small allowance they are making, she says. That can mean having portions that are too large, eating pasta or bread at all meals and during a snack, eating too much later in the day or at night, or treating yourself too often. Typically, if someone is already trying to lose weight, there isn't one glaring issue, she says. Instead there may be multiple small points to adjust over the course of the day concerning their diet.

Whatever youre trying to do for weight loss, Stanford says its important to make sure that its sustainable. Often patients will say that they want to try a certain diet or exercise plan, but I say that if this works for you, youre going to have to do it for the rest of your life, she says. Losing weight on a special diet only to regain it can put your body at a higher set point for weight, she explainsand that can make it even harder to lose it all again. Its important to ask, is this going to be sustainable indefinitely? If not, reconsider the approach, Stanford says. Make sure its something you can continue forever.

If youve already lost the weight and want to make sure you keep it off, Warren recommends keeping a food log and striving to work out regularly. The reality is that after you lose the weight you want you look to be more flexible on food choices, she says. By keeping a food log, it keeps you on track to notice when you are allowing yourself too many less healthful choices or bigger portions too often. Working out regularly also helps you balance out your flexible food choices without making you feel guilty for it, she says.

Of course, people lose weight at different paces. If you notice that a friend is losing at a faster rate than you, dont get discouragedyoull get there eventually, too, and doing it your way will help you keep it off.

Report: OJ Mayo spotted working out with Taj Gibson after huge weight loss – ClutchPoints

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:44 am

O.J. Mayo has been spotted working out alongside former USC teammate and new Minnesota Timberwolf Taj Gibson at Athletic Gaines, a facility ran by NBA trainer Travelle Gaines, according to Bryan Kalbrosky of HoopsHype.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard was a complete ghost after receiving a two-year ban from the NBA in July of 2016 for violating the leaguesanti-drug program, becoming the first player to receive that punishment in a decade.

As the season wore on, the former No. 3 overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft left no trace, blending into the shadows without any sort of noise in the aftermath of his dismissal. He recently responded to the claim that he had gone missingover Instagram.

Mayo has undergone a huge weight loss, reportedly entering his workout at a whopping 240 pounds. The USC product had struggled with weight issues during his stint with the Milwaukee Bucks, but thanks to this program, he has managed to go down to 219 pounds, looking to find his NBA shape for when the moment finally comes.

These 21 pounds were shed only after five weeks, a rapid change that has helped him get his wind back through this offseason program, which is bound to extend to a year-long regimen in order to warrant a comeback to the league. He was last listed at 210 pounds during his last year in the league.

The eight-year pro will be 30 years old when he gets another shot to rejoin the NBA. Mayo averaged7.8 points per game in 41 games and 24 starts for the Bucks in 2015-16, a clear difference from his 13.8 point per game career clip.

This Unexpected Ailment May Be Causing Your Weight Loss Plateau – Part 1 – HuffPost

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:44 am

Its a beautiful sunny morning here on Fire Island, New York, and I write this to you on Day 3 of my 10 days of vacation at my familys summer home in Ocean Beach. A lot has happened in the past year, and because of all that, this is my first time away from my business in a little over a year. Quick funny story: The trip got off to a fun start

Since we need to take a ferry to get to the island, we tend to load our wagon up with all of our bags. My girlfriend carries the bunny and her purse separately, while I carry the dog in a carrier case on my shoulder and drag the wagon. We loaded up the wagon after parking in the lot across from the ferry, and within five feet, the wagon BROKEOne of the wheels completely fell off! Thanks to technology, we Googled and found a sporting goods store that sold wagons less than a couple of miles away, and since there was a sale, we got a BEAST of a wagon on the cheap!

Its been pretty relaxing ever since:-)

Now then, as you may already know, Im a HUGE proponent of eating right! You can work out til the cows come home, but if youre fueling your body with sludge (added sugar, grains and processed foods), it aint going to look or perform very well.

That being said, there are RARE instances where clients of mine will seemingly 100% fix up their nutrition, will eliminate the added sugar and junk in their beverages, and will STILL plateau! If this persists for more than a few weeks, then we know we have a more complex issue on our hands

To keep things simple and short, there are TWO things that can cause a plateau despite proper nutrition:

1) An unknown food allergy, and/or

Lets tackle these one at a time, shall we? Todays focus will be on the food allergy side, using a personal story to help illustrate how important it is to make sure youre not unintentionally sabotaging your health or your weight loss effort

Since the end of my studies in college, I noticed that my stomach started to bother me regularly in a couple of disconcerting ways: First, Id get these sudden pangs, like someone was stabbing me in my midsection. Second, Id get a sudden onset shortly thereafter of the runs, having between 3060 seconds to find a bathroom, or else!

Fortunately, I never missed the mark on finding a bathroom when this happened, but I could never figure out what was causing this to occur. My stomach issues continued to get worse, and at one point, they got so bad that shortly after starting my personal training business, Id have to literally RUN to the bathroom in many of my clients homes halfway through our sessions.

It was embarrassing, it was unprofessional, and something needed to be done!

Interestingly enough, a chiropractor helped point me in the right direction. One of my younger brothers, Matt, is a chiropractor, and after he received his degree in the field a couple of years back, my family and I stayed in San Jose (where he lived at the time) for about a week. During this time, I met the guy he had done his preceptorship, and he offered to examine everyone in the family.

Literally the FIRST thing he did was poke me in the stomach gently, which felt similar to the stomach pangs I mentioned earlier. He told me that my intestines were inflamed, and that Id better get a food allergy test to eliminate any foods that might be causing this type of constant state of inflammation. I found out shortly thereafter that I was mildly allergic to a few foods here and there, but that I was EXTREMELY allergic to the whey protein (and moderately allergic to the casein protein) found in dairy!

Up until this point, I was a dairy fanatic! I had cheese with practically every meal, drank whey protein shakes after workouts, and had a glass of organic whole milk or two every day!!

It was tough for the first week, but once I adjusted my diet to NOT include dairy, I noticed that my stomach issues went away practically overnight:-). With better peace of mind knowing that I wasnt going to be doubled over in pain or running to a toilet, this made the cravings for dairy a lot easier to manage. In fact, I RARELY crave anything cheesy anymore!

Additionally, I lost the final 15 of the 100 lbs Ive lost from my heaviest to where I am now, and I literally didnt do anything differently but eliminate the dairy that was causing all of my issues

Moral of the Story: If you feel that youre doing everything right nutritionally, but youre STILL not making any progress, then I highly recommend you get a food allergy test! The results may not only be revealing, but can help point you in the right direction of taking that next step forward to improving your quality of life!

Sincerely,Pete Weintraubpete@weightlossbypete.com

P.S. If you feel you need more help on the nutritional side, then youre definitely going to want to invest in my Food Guide and Healthy Recipe Book!

The Food Guide lays out the three phases of nutrition I use with my Permanent Weight Loss clients. Phase 1 gets you in the habit of making healthier choices, while Phase 2 really cleans up the frequency with which you eat healthier. Phase 3 is a strict macronutrient breakdown that will help expedite the process of weight loss, all while improving your health and making your body a well-oiled machine!

My Healthy Recipe Book includes 72 recipes spanning breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, appetizers and desserts. Im constantly adding to it, but these recipes are easy to make, simple and enable you to have your cake and eat it, too!

Normally, I sell each of these books for $10 a piece, but because Im feeling generous today, you can get BOTH for just $13.99!:-)

65kg down and more to go: A personal tale of weight loss – Critical Hit

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:44 am

One of the many stigmas that gamers face is that we gamers (and geeks) spend a reasonably large part of our lives sitting in front of a screen, lying in front of a TV or just generally being quite sedentary people. It fits right into the narrative of the badly socialised, overweight and unhealthy lifestyle that many paint us with. In truth, for the most part, we are guilty of much of this we often dont get enough exercise and opt for easy and unhealthy meals when we get stuck into a focused night or few days of gaming after a new release weve been looking forward to.

Gaming is a particularly time-consuming hobby, and that means that we want to squeeze as much time out of every day as we can to enjoy it. Especially those of us with 9-to-5 jobs, we tend to forego much of what constitutes a balanced healthy lifestyle to get a couple more hours of gaming in.Usually, this means we sleep less, dont exercise and eat poorly.

I know I certainly did.

To understand why we need to worry about lifestyle and why my story is important, you should know how I ended up at my worst. Ive struggled to a large part with weight for most of my adult life, going on various diets and lifestyle plans or even to weight-loss programmes and managing to bounce between somewhere in the region of 150 and 130kg. Id diet really consistently for a few months and slowly lose interest, either because I got bored of the exercise or I stumbled in the eating plans and couldnt mentally recover from it or meet a pretty girl and stopped worrying about it.

One day just before Christmas in December 2015, I stood on a scale.

185.3kg.

Id let myself get to a point where getting off the couch was a struggle and barely able to stay awake for more than a few hours at a time without feeling fatigued and on the verge of narcolepsy. Id lived for so long on KFC and litres of orange juice and Coke and without paying any attention to myself or my weight and appearance that Id unintentionally reached rock bottom.

I say unintentionally but thats not entirely true I knew I was doing harm to my body and I knew I was gaining weight, but I never quantified it to the degree it was actually happening at because facing that truth meant making real changes, and I was an addict to food and laziness and it would mean sacrificing time from my first love gaming.

The simple truth was that while I maintained a reasonable balance between a social life and gaming, I maintained no attempt at a healthy lifestyle.

To this day I consider reaching that weight and that point in my life as a good thing. It allowed me a stern and harsh reality check that I desperately needed to finally do something real about it. I had finally, after years of ignoring the issue and taking it far too lightly it was finally as real as do something about it or die.

So I did.

I downloaded the Real Meal banting food lists and on the first day of 2016, I hit the ground running. I dont want to focus too much on the precise method and diet I used because I dont believe in the cookie cutter one-size-fits-all approach to this.

I went shopping and bought an entire months food supply and spent the whole of Sunday cooking individual meals that I put into plastic containers and froze 30 individual meals, one for each day of January. And I did this again in February. And March. In fact, I managed to keep doing this for the whole of 2016, and all the while I did no exercise.

My weight flew off in 6 months I was at 150kg and another 6 I was down to 130kg. It was dropping so quickly that I started weighing other things on the scale to make sure it wasnt broken. A year later I was 55kg lighter and mentally I was bouncing between severe imposter syndrome and incredible self-pride.

It was meal prep preparing a months worth of meals in one day and simply defrosting and eating them in the evenings to which I attribute my success. I designed the changes to my diet and lifestyle around minimising the impact on my life and subsequently my free time and maximising the return on my efforts, which was the most important thing to me because it meant not having to give up time spent watching my favourite series or playing my favourite game.

To date I have lost 65kg, putting me at 120kg, which is still overweight of course, but Im not done yet.

I consider not exercising in that first year as my biggest failure. I kept making excuses to myself all the way through 2016 rhetoric like Id do damage to myself if I exercise now and I should rather wait until I am thinner before I start were the excuses I used and I regret not starting with exercise sooner.Sometime during 2016, I decided that I needed something to motivate me to start exercising, so I signed up to hike the Fish River Canyon in Namibia in May 2017. Even still, I put off starting for another few months using the same rhetoric Id been using.

At the beginning of 2017, at 130kg I was finally mentally ready to start exercising. I started by doing the C25K running programme, which slowly over 8 weeks leads you into being able to run a 5K. I highly recommend it its 20 to 30 minutes three times a week and gives you a really great introduction into some real cardio exercise.

In March 2017 I did my first 5k in a time of 52:40. By May I was hitting 38:00 pretty consistently. In May 2017 I finished the 87km Fish River Canyon hike.I wanted to tell you what Ive managed not as a vehicle to boast, but rather because I want you to know that even if you think you that cant do it or that its out of reach for you, youre wrong. If you had told me in December 2016 that Id hike 90km through a desert, Id have laughed in your face.

Dont think that you have to make extreme changes for life rather focus on aiming to get to a sustainable lifestyle. These days I dont take everything to extremes like I did last year. Its the reason why its taken me 6 months to lose 10kg compared to the55kg I lost in the 12 months before it.

Ive incorporated other people in my lifestyle, like doing the Parkrun every Saturday morning with my parents or hiking with friends. Having the support structure that comes along with having those people around you is utterly critical. They make you accountable and they encourage you to do better and keep going.

I still run three times a week and I still try my best to stay off carbs and eat under about 2000 calories a day, but I am starting to shift from an extreme diet to a sustainable lifestyle, while I shift my mental focus from life-or-death to do-it-because-I-enjoy-it-and-its-keeping-me-healthy. This is the most difficult shift Ive had to do because it creates guilt when I eat something I shouldnt or if I miss a run day because Ive been so on point until now.

I still play games for a good few hours a day, but now spending an hour on getting fitter or a few minutes making sure I eat better is part of life.I also havent been to bed past 11 pm on a weeknight in months because sleep is just as important as diet and exercise.

Studies available to us around the subject of dieting and weight loss are intensely contradictory. Im never going to be able to convey the minefield that is weight loss, both physical and mental, in 1000 words. There is a reasonable amount of evidence, particularly based on studies from the American National Institute of Health (NIH) around the genetics and effects of rapid weight-loss on metabolism and your body and its eye opening. It deals with how weight loss will slow and why so many people put weight back on after losing it, and being armed with this knowledge up front can help you fight off the want to give up once you hit that inevitable plateau and keep going.

Its incredibly difficult to find any real and solid facts or direction from this information and Ive long since given up trying. The real truth is that its only by trial and error that youll find something that works for you remembering one simple golden rule Calories in must be less than calories out. No matter what diet youre following, whether its low carb, low-fat or any number of variations thereof, youll never get anywhere if you consume more calories than you burn. Fact.

There will be days where you will feel like you havent accomplished enough or you havent accomplished anything. These are the hardest days. Making sure you stay mentally happy and healthy while you undertake this monumental task is difficult and it will tax you to the absolute extreme.

There will be days that you dont succeed. There will be days where you dont eat what youre supposed to or just cant bring yourself to go to the gym or go for a run but dont beat yourself up about it. I always find that people judge themselves far too harshly when this happens. You can succeed 19 times out of twenty and you dont pat yourself on the back for it but you mentally beat yourself up for that one failure. Dont call it a failure because it isnt you just didnt succeed that day. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and hit the ground running again.

Even If I never lose another kilogram in my life Ill never go back to the way I was before I started this journey. Im infinitely healthier and infinitely happier than Ive ever been all for an hour of work a few times a week. Thats a no brainer.

Grain-free pet foods are no healthier, vets say. Focus on this nutrition issue instead. – Washington Post

Posted: August 15, 2017 at 7:44 am

Losing weight is tough. It would be easier if a benevolent someone concerned about your health controlled exactly how much you ate and how often you exercised, right? Thats the situation for most dogs and cats in the United States, and yet the majority are overweight or obese.

As with our own dieting woes, the unpleasant prospect of the simple solution feeding our furry friends less makes us reach for alternative, quick-fix strategies. Many pet parents have turned to radically new menus. These grain-free, all-meat and raw-food diets are inspired by the meals eaten by wild relatives of our fidos and felixes.

But are these diets really better for our pets? Veterinarians and pet nutrition researchers say probably not.

According to clinical veterinary nutritionists at Tufts University, grain-free foods were one of the fastest-growing sectors of the pet food market in 2016. All I ever hear is, oh, on a good diet, its grain free, said Dena Lock, a veterinarian in Texas. The majority of her pet patients are overweight.

Why have these pet diets become so popular?

Its a marketing trend, Lock said.

Grain-free is marketing. Its only marketing, said Cailin Heinze, a small-animal nutritionist at Tufts Universitys Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. A lot of foods market themselves by what theyre not including, and the implication is that the excluded ingredient must be bad.

Grain-free is definitely a marketing technique that has been very successful, said Jennifer Larsen, a clinical nutritionist at the University of California Veterinary School in Davis. (Disclosure: I went to graduate school at the University of California at Davis, but studied plants, not pets.) People think that if they pay a lot for food and there are a lot of exclusions on the bag, that the food is healthier, but theyre buying an idea, she said, not necessarily a superior product.

There is absolutely no data to support the idea that grain-free diets are better for pets, Heinze and Larsen noted.

Some pet owners have a false impression that grains are more likely to cause an allergic reaction, but its much more common for dogs to have allergies to meat than to grain, Heinz said. Chicken, beef, eggs, dairy and wheat are the most common allergies in dogs. And its not that theres anything particularly allergenic about these foods, she said, theyre just the most frequently used ingredients.

Marketing campaigns such as Blue Buffalos Wilderness or Chewys Taste of Wild claim that their grain-free, meat-forward formulations better reflect the ancestral diets of our dogs and cats evolutionary predecessors, but the veterinarians I spoke with also questioned this logic.

For one, our pets wild cousins arent all that healthy. People believe that nature is best, Larsen said, but animals in the wild dont live that long and they dont lead very healthy lives.

For dogs, we know that they have diverged from wolves genetically in their ability to digest starches. Dogs arent wolves, said Robert Wayne, a canine geneticist at UCLA. They have adapted to a human diet. Research in Waynes lab showed that most wolves carry two copies of a gene involved in starch digestion, while dogs have between 3 and 29 copies. According to Heinze, the average dog can easily handle 50 percent of itsdiet as carbs.

For cats, this argument makes a little more sense. Cats are carnivores rather than omnivores, so they have higher protein requirements than dogs, but cats can digest and utilize carbohydrates quite well, said Andrea Fascetti, a veterinary nutritionist at the University of California Veterinary School in Davis.

Many grain-free pet foods are made with starch from potatoes or lentils and they may be higher in fat. If you cut grains but increase calories, your pet is going to gain weight, Heinze said.

Dogs and cats also have a drastically different lifestyle fromwolves or tigers. Pets are almost always spayed and neutered which is in itself a risk factor for obesity. And most live inside or in pens, so their energy needs are reduced dramatically.

In the wild, wolves and feline predators eat the hair, bones and cartilage of their prey, not just meat. For pet owners who do choose to feed their animals an all-meat diet, its essential to add supplements to make sure their pet isnt missing out on key nutrients such as calcium, Fascetti said. And theres the environmental impact to consider: Pets consume a quarter of all animal-derived calories in the United States.

Experts especially caution against feeding pets raw meat. Its not uncommon to find things like salmonella and E. coli and listeria in raw meat, Larsen said. There are a lot of microbes present in our farming systems, and unlike when an animal is hunting in the wild, there are many opportunities for bacteria to contaminate meat between the time an animal is slaughtered and when it reaches our kitchens.

Even if eating contaminated meat doesnt make pets sick, it poses a health risk to pet owners and their children who handle the pet food and waste. The Centers for Disease Control and Preventionand the Food and Drug Administrationboth warn against feeding raw meat to your pets, and I really cant advocate it, because its not safe for the whole family, Heinze said.

But what about all those benefits you hear about from feeding a raw diet, like shiny coats and less frequent stools? I cant tell you how many clients send me pictures of poop, Larsen said. But changes to a pets bathroom habits dont have anything to do with their food being raw.

Raw diets tend to be lower in fiber, and high fiber probablyresults in larger stools. But we dont have a sense of whether stool quality and quantity correlate with health, Fascetti said. And that shiny coat probably is because ofhigh fat, Heinze said.

If pet owners wish to formulate their own diets, they should work with their veterinarian and a board-certified nutritionist. If youre feeding your pet a balanced diet such as in a commercial chow, obesity is the biggest nutrition issue pet owners should worry about, Heinze said.

We want our pets to enjoy what theyre eating, so many foods and especially treats are formulated to be high in fat, Larsen said. Most people dont realize that a milk bone has about as many calories as a candy bar, Lock said.

I know the struggle. My own hefty husky mix stares at me with her big brown eyes and licks the window whenever she wants food. Ive taken to calling the dental chews I buy her guilt-a-bones, because I cant help but give her one every time I leave.

But studies have found that feeding dogs to maintain a lean body weight has very positive effects on their overall health and can even increase life span. This is also the case in mice and rats, and we believe that these findings apply to cats as well, Fascetti said.

Theres no one magic diet for every animal. These experts strongly recommend working with your veterinarian to find a diet that works for you and your pet. When it comes to navigating marketing claims in the pet food aisle, Lock suggests finding a company that employs a veterinary nutritionist and does feeding trials. Try not to get too hung up on the no list, Heinze said. Claims like no gluten, no grains, and no soy generally mean no science.
