This is the diet Guy Sebastian did to look ripped on the cover of Men’s Health – NEWS.com.au

The ketogenic diet has gained popularity in recent years, with some claiming this way of eating can have incredible benefits to long-term health.

Former Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian says its the diet that helped him get shredded in eight weeks for his Mens Health Australia cover.

But what is a ketogenic diet, and does the evidence truly stack up to back up the claims? This is what you need to know, according to accredited practising dietitian Chloe McLeod.

What is a ketogenic diet?

A ketogenic diet is a diet very low in carbohydrates and very high in fat. The reduction in the consumption of carbohydrates places the body in a state of ketosis, which is a metabolic state where fat provides most of the fuel the body requires to function.

What constitutes a diet thats low-carb and high-fat?

A standard ketogenic diet is usually comprised of approximately 20 per cent protein, 75 per cent fat, and 5 per cent carbohydrates, where approximately 10-50g of carbohydrates are consumed each day. When compared to a general healthy diet, the distribution is far more even, with approximately 20-30 per cent protein, 20-30 per cent fat and 30-40 per cent carbohydrates.

Who should do it?

Ketogenic diets are reportedly useful for weight management. When reducing carbohydrates, it is normal to see the number on the scales go down, due to the body losing water as a result of carbohydrate stores being used up. Fat and protein are also very satiating, meaning that it is possible you will feel fuller. This means potentially fewer calories are consumed, so weight loss is as a result of reduced calorie consumption, rather than the low-carb diet. That said there is some research which indicates that low carbohydrate diets can assist with weight loss, particularly in severely obese individuals.

The cons?

Some of the claims of the efficacy of a ketogenic diet are overstated, particularly in relation to weight loss, increased lean mass and increased longevity. More high quality research is needed to support these claims.

Also, following this diet can be really difficult, particularly in the long-term. Fruit, grains, beans and legumes, starchy vegetables, most dairy, along with most processed foods need to be removed from the diet. This usually means that day to day eating needs to be highly structured and planned, and eating out and social arrangements can become much more difficult.

This lifestyle also means significantly less fibre and prebiotic foods going into the diet, which can have a negative impact on many aspects of health particularly in gut health. New research has shown a high-fat diet can change the balance of healthy bacteria in the gut, with potentially wide ranging effects on health, not to mention, an increased risk of constipation.

How to do it safely (if at all)

If someone needs to follow, or wants to try out a ketogenic diet, it is recommended to work with a dietitian who is skilled in this area to help ensure all nutrition needs are covered. Its also a good idea to have a chat with your GP, and get some blood tests done first to check key vitals before commencing.

Low carbohydrate, ketogenic diets may have some positive health benefits, but it is important to not view it as a cure-all as for most of us, it wont be.

British Dietetic Association confirms vegan diets can support healthy living for all ages – The London Economic

Posted: August 7, 2017 at 1:47 pm

One of the UKs longest-standing organisations that represents dietetics and nutrition has affirmed that a well-planned vegan diet can support healthy living in people of all ages in an official document signed by its CEO.

The British Dietetic Association has renewed its memorandum of understanding with The Vegan Society to state that a balanced vegan diet can be enjoyed by children and adults, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The memorandum is building upon the existing working relationship between the BDA and The Vegan Society and the previous agreement about vegan diets in 2014.

By combining their strengths, both organisations are committed to bringing reliable information on plant-based nutrition to every community in the UK.

Heather Russell, Dietitian at The Vegan Society, said: The Vegan Society is respected by vegans around the world and the nutrition pages on our website are a valuable resource that many people rely on.

The BDA is one of the foremost providers of evidence-based information in the practice of dietetics and by collaborating with them, The Vegan Society wishes to reaffirm itself as not just an authority on veganism, but also on vegan nutrition.

We want to reassure vegans that their lifestyle choice supports healthy living and give dietitians confidence to deliver reliable vegan-friendly dietetics advice.

Andy Burman, Chief Executive at BDA, said: We are pleased to have renewed this memorandum with The Vegan Society so that we can continue our positive working relationship.

It is important that people choosing to eat a vegan diet can get the right advice from the right sources, and know to visit a dietitian for advice on tailoring their nutrition and diet. The BDA will continue to work with The Vegan Society to promote this message.

The document states the BDA and The Vegan Society will work together to show that it is possible to follow a well-planned, plant-based, vegan-friendly diet that supports healthy living in people of all ages.

The organisations will also promote reliable, evidence-based advice on a healthy vegan diet to members of the public, services users and medical professionals.

The Vegan Society has recently revised all of its nutrition resources which can be found at http://www.vegansociety.com/nutrition

The Secret, Sordid History Of The Graham Cracker – Refinery29

Posted: August 7, 2017 at 1:47 pm

They were saying, Well, shit, if you get cholera, it means that youve been doing certain things. Youre having sex outside of marriage, youre smoking, youre drinking alcohol, says Engs. And, above all, youre eating improperly. Graham actually wrote a whole book on cholera and how to prevent it. You dont drink coffee or tea, or eat raw vegetables. Now, the point about raw vegetables was probably good advice he gave, in terms of cholera. Cooking would kill the bacterium, and many other foodborne pathogens. Certainly, Graham didnt know that then. He believed that cholera was caused by, a particular acute manifestation of overstimulation of the stomach. Therefore, food should be soft, bland, devoid of strong flavors or flavors that might excite or stimulate a person. He ate this way, and he didnt get cholera, after all. Therefore, cooked (what wed now consider overcooked) vegetables became a central element in his dietary creed, which he preached in packed lecture halls across the country, drawing thousands at a time. And thanks to this incredibly lucky coincidence, his word soon became gospel.

Ask the Anytime Gal: Are detoxification diets needed for weight loss? – Jacksonville Daily Progress

Posted: August 7, 2017 at 1:47 pm

QUESTION: I keep hearing about detoxification diets, and how they can help with weight loss and other health-related issues.

Im looking to jumpstart my own weight loss, so is this something I should consider?

ANSWER No -- you do not need to resort to detox diets to lose weight.

They might be popular right now, but in my humble opinion, theyre definitely not the answer youre looking for. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people that think detoxification is a reasonable path to take to better health.

So-called experts claim that detox diets can flush toxins from your body, strengthen your immune system, improve your skins complexion, and help you get rid of excess fat fast.

They even point to famous Hollywood starlets who, as we all know, are willing to try anything and everything to get the look.

Thankfully, most real experts, including doctors, dietitians, and trainers, agree that these regimens do more harm than good, often resulting in unpleasant, and sometimes dangerous, side effects.

These can include vitamin deficiencies, electrolyte abnormalities, blood sugar problems, excessive diarrhea, muscle breakdown, and a suppressed immune system.

Not bad for an overly restrictive liquid diet, huh?

Hopefully its not a surprise to you, but your body is perfectly capable of detoxifying itself, and it does an excellent job. Your kidneys, liver, lungs, skin, and several other organs all contribute to this process.

If you really want to lose weight, and do it in a healthy way, speak to a registered dietitian and/or certified personal trainer, so they can help you develop a safe and effective plan.

Jillian Bearden, first female transgender cyclist to ride in a pro US peloton, emerges as beacon for other trans … – The Denver Post

Posted: August 7, 2017 at 1:47 pm

SALIDA Less than three years into her transition from Jonathan to Jillian, pro cyclist Jillian Bearden has once again found serenity on her bike. Now, using studies and stats collected during her long career, shes helping prove that transgender athletes change more than their names, they change their biology.

Bearden has watched her performance ebb since beginning hormone-replacement therapy in 2015. As testosterone fades and estrogen grows, her fastest times on favorite climbs have slipped into what she calls the gutter.

It was tough realizing her hard-earned power, developed over more than a decade of elite-level bike racing, was waning.

I went from 16 minutes to 26, 27, 28 minutes, she said of her times on her those climbs. I was like holy Testosterone gives you this drive, this oomph, and I didnt have that push. My muscles looked fairly big, but I did not have that push to drive that extra energy. I had good days and really, really bad days. But at the end of it all, I always know that I won the biggest race of all. I am here on planet Earth with my family and it doesnt really matter how slow I am. Ive already won.

Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post

On Thursday, when Bearden saddles up with the worlds best female cyclists for the Colorado Classic in her hometown of Colorado Springs, she will be the first transwoman to race with a pro peloton in the United States. Thanks to recently relaxed International Olympic Committee rules governing transgender athletes, and USA Cyclings embrace of those new rules, Bearden has become a beacon for transathletes across the globe.

Bearden is basking in a light that saved her life. In late 2014, she was driving in the dark and pushed hercar to 90 mph. She turned up her favorite tune and prepared to whip the steering wheel and end it all. The darkness was all-consuming, eclipsing all the outward trimmings of success: a family, a home, a job and elite-level talent on a bike.

But just before that fateful yank, Bearden said she felt an angelic light penetrate her overwhelming misery. Maybe it was from her mom. Or her brother, who had taken his life almost a decade earlier.

Whatever it was, that presence brought me out and the message to me was Tell your mom. Just tell your mom, Jillian said.

Jillian told her mom. Then she told her spouse. And her kids. And now shes telling the world, that since her birth, despite the misplaced hardware and the name Jonathan, she is a woman. Its not just that she always wanted to be a woman. She is a woman.

I would have killed myself that night and no one would have ever known why. I always knew who I was, but I was in such turmoil, the 36-year-old said, sipping coffee before a high-speed criterium race on rain-soaked streets in Salida.

While she was ready to sacrifice her competitive life in the saddle to claim her gender, she wasnt going to let go of bike racing without a fight. Cycling is her therapy, she said.

Riding my bike has saved my life many times over, said Bearden, who works as an electrical engineer.

After her brother killed himself in 2005, she pedaled. As she grappled with her gender dysphoria, she pedaled. When suicidal thoughts consumed her, she pedaled. After several thousand hours of training and racing, she was really good. By the time she came so close to ending her life, she had reached the highest levels of amateur cycling on both her mountain and road bikes. Racing was part of her identity. Staying competitive on the bike was vital as she transitioned.

Her growth to Jillian has included more than counseling: hormone therapy to block testosterone and add estrogen, laser hair removal and a public pivot to female. Shes also worked with the IOC and USA Cycling to implement new rules for transgender athletes.

The IOCs 2003 rules governing transgender athletes required them to have gender-reassignment surgery to compete in Olympic sports.

To require surgical anatomical changes as a precondition to participation is not necessary to preserve fair competition and may be inconsistent with developing legislation and notions of human rights, reads the IOCs November 2015 draft guidelines for transgender policies.

The new rules simply require transwomen to keep testosterone below a certain level for a year before competing and must present a doctors note showing their testosterone levels are below the IOC threshold. The IOC recommendations include no restrictions for athletes transitioning to male.

USA Cycling was one of the first national governing bodies to embrace the new policy, thanks in part to Beardens help. She had the science to support the new rules.

As an elite male racer, she had regular benchmarks measuring her power and lactate threshold. After more than two years of blocking testosterone and boosting estrogen, her wattage output has dropped by 11.4 percent. That mirrors the performance gap between top-tier male and female athletes.

Bearden says those results have fostered a welcoming environment among her fellow racers. And with her decrease in power documented, shes able to dismiss the argument that shes carrying her years of training and racing as a man into womens racing.

Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post

Im shocked and Im blessed and so happy they have embraced me and bought me in and treated me like who I am: a woman, she said. I think a lot of people have read about my work with the IOC and USAC and they see my test results from before and after and they see me as legit. I mean Im here. Im a woman. Lets race.

Michelle Henry, a Palmares Racing teammate, has been training with Bearden for several weeks to prepare for the Colorado Classic.

There are a lot of us who really support her, she said. As much as her mission is to help others who might be struggling through that really low spot she was in, for many of us, we want to help those people understand there is a lot of acceptance out there and we support them.

Bearden credits the support of her team and family with her mental fight to regain her competitive edge. As her power waned, her push became much more internal.

The testosterone is gone so you have to find a new way to get to the new you and the new me was working on my mental game, she said. Now its all mental.

Beardens steep decline in performance aligns with the first study of transgender athletes, published in 2015 in the Journal of Sporting Cultures and Identities by medical physicist Joanna Harper, who is advising the IOC on its transgender policies. Harpers study showed transwomen runners slowed and lost strength as they blocked testosterone and added estrogen.

Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post

Chuck Hodge, the technical director for USA Cycling, consulted with Bearden as American cyclings governing body crafted a policy that welcomed all athletes. With the IOC revising its recommendations for transwomen athletes, USA Cycling didnt need to go through a philosophical or political review, he said, so much as embrace an update that really modernized our view.

We basically said this is our policy, and this is whats fair, and this is what we are doing, he said.

Hodge worked with Bearden through tweaks, like making sure her former name didnt pop up with her times on a races online results page. That sounds small, but I cant imagine going through all these changes and then our automated system throws up their old name. Jillian has been very helpful and understanding through the process.

Hodge said hes been somewhat shocked at the number of calls and emails from athletes who are following Beardens lead.

This wasnt a hard decision, he said. Its really just treating people fairly and equitably and with respect.

USA Cycling is at the forefront of Olympic-sport governing bodies that are crafting policies for transgender athletes. Athletes like Bearden, with her before-and-after power data, support more science-based decisions, said Ashland Johnson, the director of education and research at the Human Rights Campaign who recently conducted a training for U.S. Olympic Committee coaches and administrators to help embrace athletes of every stripe.

Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post

We are seeing more of a move among governing bodies, where instead of making policies that are dependent on old stereotypes based on gender, decisions are based in science, inclusion and fairness, she said.

Things are moving in the right direction at the international and national level, but more needs to be done at the state level, to make sure the Olympic pipeline of younger athletes can include transgender competitors, Johnson said.

That K-12 arena is where everyone should be able to participate, Johnson said. We want to increase inclusion at every level of sport, but especially K-through-12.

Even with the welcome from her fellow competitors and her rising profile as a transathlete role model, Bearden is quick to admit that not one step of her journey has been easy. But its better than it ever was.

Last fall, with her wife Sarah and their almost 3-year-old daughter cheering her on, she won Arizonas El Tour de Tucson, one of the largest road bike races in the country. The Trans National Womens Cycling Team she co-founded last year has 22 members from 15 states and Mexico. So far this season shes competed in almost 20 races in Colorado and the West. In late July she placed fifth in the Salida Classic criterium. The next day she took third in the events road race.

The Colorado Classic will be her highest profile competition.

Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post

Shes a podium contender and shes ready for the hate that might bring. She got it aplenty after she won the Tucson race. Her Facebook and Strava pages were quickly stained with anonymous commenters seemingly irked by her talent. Recently shes had to report online death threats to the police. Transwomen are disproportionately targeted for violence and transgender people have a high suicide rate, with an estimated 41 percent of transgender adults saying they have attempted to kill themselves.

But for every bucketload of hostility, Bearden says she connects with one person who is inspired by her story. That makes it all worth it, she said. Since she began racing last year, shes developed friendships with more than 50 transgender cyclists across the world eager to follow her lead.

As more step forward to claim their gender, she said, momentum is building.

I want to use the strength I was given through my transition and send ripples to people everywhere. At the end of the day it could help save a life for someone in a dark place, she said. Im hoping that me being out in the public eye can give people the courage and safety to come out and do what they love and be who they are.

Why this beef farmer might bring his bulls in early for some beefing up – Independent.ie

Posted: August 7, 2017 at 1:46 pm

We also made 45 bales of silage. This was made from short leafy grass and, hopefully it will be excellent quality because we will use this for the bulls when we bring them in early September to finish them.

I just wonder about the weight gain of our bulls in that real hot weather. They do a lot of lying around and seem contented, I wonder whether they are grazing enough because if they are not taking in enough feed they can't maximise their weight gain.

I am toying with the idea of maybe bringing them in a fortnight earlier.

By leaving it until September to bring them in, it means that the oldest bulls will only be on approximately 90 days feed. While this works fine with the Angus bulls, I think the Belgian Blue bulls would benefit from an extra 30 days feed.

There was a little bit of coughing starting to appear in some of the young stock, so they all got their second treatment of the year for hoose and worms and thankfully the coughing disappeared a few days later. We injected them with Animec at 1ml per 50kg live weight.

Most of the ground that we took the second cut silage off got 2,500 gallons of watery slurry last week.

Grazing area

Any fields that have been grazed will be topped with the disc mower, as soon as we can get to it. So hopefully this will set the farm up nicely to produce some good quality grass for the cows and young calves to graze.

We will blanket spread the entire grazing area with fertiliser between now and the end of August. Depending on the particular fields and their soil sample results, it will either be straight Nitrogen or a compound.

I am reluctant to do it all at the one time because, if I do, by the time we get to graze the last few paddocks, the covers are way too heavy on them and we just don't get the utilisation.

We made 120 round bales of hay last week and, when the field greens up again, we plan to spray it off and re-seed it.

I am wondering what to do with a field that is probably one of our most fertile. There is an excellent crop of grass on it, with a lot of clover but quite a lot of docks are also starting to appear.

So I need to decide whether to spray the docks and hope it doesn't adversely affect the clover or maybe go for a full re-seed next year.

We have cut some of the winter barley. What looked a promising crop the whole year has turned out to be a bit disappointing.

At this stage, it looks like we will struggle to average 3.5 tonnes/acre. That basically means the crop will struggle to break even. The screenings were running at about 12pc with the moisture at 13pc+.

High screenings and low moisture usually add up to loads weighting less than expected and that is exactly what is happening.

To add insult to injury, the weather seems to have taken a turn for the worse.

Mushroom burgers and tofu: Trent Williams hopes vegan diet helps body, performance – ESPN (blog)

Posted: August 7, 2017 at 1:46 pm

RICHMOND, Virginia -- Washington Redskins tackle Trent Williams does not sit in the cafeteria and gaze at teammates trays or get wistful as he smells whats being cooked. When Williams sits down to another vegan meal, hes not fighting an urge to push his plate aside and dive into one that includes meat.

He's happy with what's on his plate.

Temptation is something that comes along when youre doing something you dont want to do, Williams said. Its a choice. Theres no temptation. No one is policing me saying I can or cant eat meat. It was a decision on my part.

One that hell keep doing. Williams touts the Redskins offensive line as Hogs 2.0, but Hogs 1.0 were full of beer-drinking, meat-eating players. Williams, though, keeps looking for an edge, and this offseason that included altering what he eats. Theres a family history of diabetes, but theres also a desire by the five-time Pro Bowler to play a long time and find any way to maintain an advantage. There has been no drop-off in his performance during camp.

How much longer he continues eating vegan remains uncertain. Williams month doing so ended Sunday, and hes debating if he should stick to it or, per the advice of his nutritionist, add fish a few times a week.

Ill never go back to eating like I used to, Williams said.

Williams started on this path in part because of a documentary called What the Health. But, he said, he was already contemplating a change. When he decided to do it, he went (pun intended) cold turkey.

I set a date that I wanted to do it, and before that day leading up to it, I binged on everything I thought I would miss, Williams said. Barbecue, Mexican food, a good steak. All the stuff I had eaten a lot.

Heres a look at Williams typical meals now, compared with the past:

Breakfast: A smoothie, with fruit and kale. Williams adds a vegan protein supplement given to him by a nutritionist. Hell usually have two smoothies, totaling between 20 and 24 ounces. That suffices until lunch. In the past, Williams ate what he called a typical breakfast: a big omelet, maybe a waffle.

Lunch: Lately, he has been eating pasta with mushrooms or spinach and sometimes tofu. If he wants something with more substance, hell add french fries. Something that sticks to my stomach a little longer, he said. That holds him through the 3 p.m. practice. Before, Williams was like most of his teammates at lunch, eating a variety of food -- but always something with meat.

Dinner: Lately, he has had a lot of stir-fry vegetables or various forms of pasta, topped with vegetables. He goes heavy on the carbs to maintain energy and to help stay hydrated. But his favorite meal so far: a portobello mushroom burger. That was pretty good. Actually, it was real good, Williams said. It had a lot of flavor. After meetings, hell down another smoothie, around 20 ounces. Dinner before his new diet? Meat.

[Before], sometimes Id eat lunch and feel it in my stomach for hours, Williams said. Sometimes, Id feel sluggish. Sometimes I wouldnt eat breakfast before 1 p.m. games because I knew it would make me sluggish. Now I eat breakfast and my body burns it the right way.

Williams consulted with Redskins nutritionist Jake Sankal. Teammate Jordan Reed tried a vegan diet in the offseason but stopped because he felt he was losing too much weight. That was an issue for Williams early on as well. He played last season at 323 pounds, but he dipped below 310 after going vegan.

To be honest, I was scared to get on a scale, Williams said. I didnt want to scare myself out of it.

But he said he now weighs right around 320.

Hes in a good spot weight-wise, as good a weight as hes ever had around here, said Redskins coach Jay Gruden, who has lost 22 pounds on his own altered regimen of improved diet and exercise. We will see how it goes, but hes in contact with Jake.

The hardest food to give up, Williams said, was cheese and dairy in general. It has forced him to closely scan ingredient lists, and its why he now eats kettle chips as a snack rather than Cheetos or Doritos.

He did indulge one time, celebrating his 29th birthday on July 19 with a burger.

I tried to treat myself, but it ended up hurting, Williams said. It tasted good going down but sat in my stomach all night. During my workout [the next day], I could feel it the whole time. It took longer to digest than it used to.

Teammates pepper him with questions, wondering if they should try it, as well, including safeties D.J. Swearinger, Will Blackmon and DeAngelo Hall, who is looking for any help in recovering from last seasons torn ACL. Guards Arie Kouandjio and Isaiah Williams joined Williams over the last month.

You feel an overall difference with your energy, Williams said. I just feel better. ... If it keeps me healthier, why not?

Questions over DNA tests sold for nutritional advice – CBS News

Every time Rebecca Castle sat down to eat her favorite foods, she says she suffered excruciating abdominal pain.

"I cut out carbs. I wasn't eating dairy," she said. Nevertheless, she experienced sharp, shooting pain, bloating and distention for more than two years.

Castle saw multiple doctors. Then she spent several hundred dollars to take a DNA metabolic test.

What she learned? "I was allergic to starch," she said. "That's mostly root vegetables, corn, peas, sweet potatoes."

Nutritionist Nicci Schock says a typical client for such a DNA test is an athlete looking to improve performance. "And then folks like Rebecca, they know their body and they know something is off."

Proponents of metabolic tests say dietary recommendations are based on a patient's genetic profile.

Nutrigenomix

Ahmed El-Sohemy, the chief science officer at Nutrigenomix, said, "Even though it's a genetic test, it's effectively dietary advice and counseling an individual on how to eat better.

"Individual genetic differences can help us understand why some people respond differently from others."

Nutrigenomix markets a DNA test that looks at 45 genetic markers. The company makes recommendations based on the patient's genetic profile, pointing out attributes like "an elevated risk for low iron."

"We're talking about metabolic tests," El-Sohemy told correspondent Michelle Miller. "They're genetic tests, but they affect the way that you metabolize various substances that you consume."

But Dr. David Agus, a CBS News contributor, says DNA tests for diet and exercise recommendations are not validated by medical research.

"There are very few of them that actually have data behind them," he said. "And to me, that's a problem. You know, you have companies like 23andMe that were taken off the market for several years because they had to show data with regard to human disease. Well, I think this same thing needs to happen with nutrition and exercise."

The FDA says it supports tests "that may provide consumers with direct genetic information that can inform health related decisions."

But the agency points out it "does not actively regulate these products."

"2,400 years ago, Hippocrates did something amazing: he would eat something, and he would write down how he felt after he ate it," Dr. Agus said. "To me, that's the best way in the world to know what's right for you."

Rebecca Castle says the test produced more than 30 pages of results about her body, which means she can now avoid the foods that set off her stomach.

"I think it's worth it," she said. "You don't need your blood taken; you're literally just spitting into a test tube. You could do it in your sleep!"
