If losing a healthy amount of weight in a short amount of time is an ideal option for you, then there's one eating habit that you should definitely consider.

In a review that was published in Nature Reviews: Endocrinology, researchers took a look at 21 different studies and found that fasting is an effective way to lose weight, "at least in the short term," according to Medscape.

While focusing on trials that lasted around five to 12 weeks each and included anywhere from 10 to 150 primarily American participants, results showed alternate-day fasting, time-restricted eating, and the 5:2 diet "can all produce a mild to moderate 3% to 8% weight loss during 8 to 12 weeks."

Beyond that, Best notes, "The benefits of fasting go far beyond weight loss, but these studies lay a great foundation to encourage would-be fad dieters to take part in a safe and sustainable means of weight loss."

When it comes to what people should do if they want to use fasting to successfully and safely lose weight in a relatively short amount of time, Best explains that "when fasting, it is important to eat balanced meals during your eating window. It may be tempting to go longer without calories or eat fewer calories than you need during an eating window. However, this will result in slowed metabolism, weight loss plateau, and ultimately rebound weight gain."

As for using a fasting method to keep weight off over a longer period of time, Best notes that, indeed, "fasting can be used long-term for weight loss along with many other health benefits. Fasting is a temporary restriction of calories that are replaced in a shorter window.

Therefore, it is unlike fad diets that require long-term, unsustainable calorie restriction, which leads to rebound weight gain."

Diet expert Dr Michael Mosley has suggested the best foods to eat more of if you want to lose weight quickly. The television doctor, who founded the 5:2 diet, has created a short-term diet called the Fast 800 Diet that claims to boost rapid weight loss.

But there is a warning to check with health professionals before trying it out. The diet involves eating 800 calories a day in the form of foods that are consumed within a low-carb Mediterranean diet in order to feel full.

He also says that foods that are rich in protein, as well as being high in fibre and healthy fats, should be used as a "kick-start to improve metabolic health" until a healthy weight is achieved - or for up to 12 weeks.

Dr Mosley, who is the resident weight loss expert on This Morning, recommends that adults consume at least 60g of protein daily. However, he explains that this can actually be upped if you're looking to lose weight. He claims that those who incorporate less than this amount of protein in their diets could be harming their metabolic rate. He said: "Your body will cannibalise your muscles and your metabolic rate will go down."

Explaining who the diet might help, the website says "Major studies have shown that following an 800 calorie a day diet is much more effective than going slow and steady. A rapid weight loss plan, with typical weight loss of around 10kg in 12 weeks, is a proven way to reverse, and prevent the onset of, type 2 diabetes.."

It also explains how they believe it works saying: "We all use two different types of fuel to function: glucose and fat. If you eat and snack regularly throughout the day, your body gets a continual source of glucose from food to fuel your muscles. Any excess (if you eat more calories than you burn off through exercise) is then stored as fat.

"However, when you spend some time fasting and lowering your intake carbohydrates, the glucose supply temporarily runs out, and your body has to switch to taking fat from your fat stores to burn as fuel. Scientists call this fuel transfer flipping the metabolic switch."

The British Heart Foundation states: "Most adults need around 0.75g of protein per kilo of body weight per day (for the average woman, this is 45g, or 55g for men). Thats about two portions of meat, fish, nuts or tofu per day."

If you plan on attempting the Fast 800 it is essential that you check with a health professional first, and you should also be cautious when reintroducing calories to your diet. While many weight-loss crash diets are criticised, both in nature and for the inability to keep the weight off, Dr Mosley believes his revamped Fast 800 diet is effective in the long term.

He said: "If you do a safe and effective rapid weight loss diet, two to three years down the road you'll keep most of that weight off."

I became a fitness person during the Covid-19 pandemic. While the world was in chaos around me, I exercised to stay sane. After a year and change, though, I was ready to level up. Thats how I found myself sitting in front of Jamie Gabel, co-founder of Advitam in New York City, a metabolic wellness clinic where Gabel uses treatments like hormone replacement therapy, IV treatments, and more to improve not only how your body looks but how it functions. As we begin to treat wellness as both an internal and external pursuit, experts like Gabel are at the forefront.

After a conversation about my fitness goals (two words: Chris Hemsworth) and lots of blood tests, he recommended hormone replacement therapy to address my lowish testosterone, as well as something else: peptides. I had to dig into my dormant high school biology knowledge to understand. I knew peptides were chains of amino acids, but theyre also signaling molecules that can stimulate the cells in our bodies to perform specific, targeted functions.

Peptides could become the standard for the prevention of heart and neurodegenerative diseases.

Its a complex idea that sounds simple. Over time, if your cells are not working efficiently, they can cause problems, says William Seeds, co-founder and chairman of the Seeds Scientific Research & Performance Institute and the worlds leading expert on peptide therapy. Those problems can be anything from signs of aging in our skin to musculoskeletal injury to more serious degenerative diseases. Loss of cell function is a part of the natural aging process, but the job of cellular medicine, particularly peptide therapy, is to help those cells regain their efficiency. The reason peptides work so well is that our bodies recognize them. Your body already knows exactly what this signaling peptide is trying to do. Were just using them to right the ship, Seeds says.

In my case, Gabel prescribed a combination of growth hormonereleasing peptides (GHRPs) that I injected into my abdomen on a specific schedule for a period of two months. These peptides sent signals to my brain to produce more growth hormone, which helps build muscle and burn fat. In the old days someone might have given me straight-up growth hormone to inject, but that would have come with serious risks. Its easy to overshoot with actual growth hormones, Gabel says. If this happens, the risks can outweigh the benefits. Many clinicians now feel that growth hormone peptides are a safer alternative. One of the benefits of peptides is that your cells are already preprogrammed with genetic information, like an automatic shutoff valve, so its less likely that your body will produce too much of the hormone.

Seeing my muscles swell was fun, but I also noticed that I could train harder and recover faster.

GHRPs like the ones I used arent always for aesthetics; they have longevity benefits, too. Your brain function requires growth hormone. So does your skin. Really, every cell in the body has a receptor for it, Gabel says. I experienced that firsthand. Seeing my muscles swell was fun, but I also noticed that I could train harder and recover faster with less soreness, that my energy was higher, and that I was sleeping better. That, I realized, is the beauty of peptides. In traditional medicine, we identify a problem and take a drug to fix it, but by targeting the source, peptides can have a wide range of effects that work together to help your body perform better. There are about 150 peptides currently available or being studied for all sorts of things, including repairing muscles and tendons, preventing fibrosis, supporting the immune system, regulating the gut, and stimulating collagen production. Thats just the tip of the iceberg, Seeds says. He sees a future where peptides could become the standard for the prevention of heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimers, and even cancer. Right now peptides are being studied in combination with chemotherapy to help make it more tolerable and less toxic. Its all still fairly new, but it promises such enormous benefits that, according to Seeds, big pharmaceutical companies are starting to pay attention. Theres a reason its growing, he says. Because its working.

One day we may all be injecting or swallowing peptides to treat or prevent every possible ailment. They have helped me achieve a fitter body than I had a year ago, but the reason Im going to keep using them is more than that. For the first time in a long time, I have actual pep in my step.

The researchers emphasize that their data is incomplete, and it is unclear whether xylitol is beneficial for children who are especially vulnerable to ear infections.

A 2020 review found that this low-calorie sugar can increase satiety, helping people feel fuller for longer after eating.

However, anyone who may be having negative health effects linked with xylitol should avoid further contact with it and consult a healthcare professional.

It is possible to develop an allergy to any substance. However there is no evidence that xylitol allergies are common.

People with diabetes should be mindful of the effects of all sweeteners on blood glucose. However, a small 2021 pilot study suggests that the effects of xylitol on blood glucose and insulin production are small.

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that manufacturers may use on its own or in addition to xylitol.

Aspartame caused some controversy when early animal studies suggested that it may increase the risk of certain types of cancer. More recent research has called this into question.

Both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have concluded that the current accepted daily intake (ADI) of aspartame is safe.

More specifically, the EFSA suggests that an ADI of under 40 milligrams of aspartame per kilogram of body weight is safe. Typical daily consumption falls well below this level.

Unlike aspartame, no research has linked xylitol to serious health issues. For this reason, some consumers may prefer xylitol to aspartame.

Xylitol is a low-calorie sweetener that derives from certain fruits and vegetables. Manufacturers use it in sweet foods and oral care products.

Most research into the potential health benefits of xylitol focuses on its ability to improve oral health due to its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Other findings indicate that xylitol may help prevent ear infections, help with weight management, and alleviate constipation, among other possible benefits. However, further research is necessary.

Anyone with diabetes or an allergy to sweeteners should speak with a doctor before using xylitol.

TEMPLE, Texas As weight loss continues to be one of the top New Years resolutions, were diving into why we fail at diets, why our culture is so obsessed with thinness and how we can improve our body image.

6 News Anchor Leslie Draffin is also opening up about her own struggles with dieting and eating disorders as she interviews health experts about ways we can move toward better health without focusing on the number on the scale.

In the first of a multi-part special series of the segment Your Best Life, we explore why diets fail and why it's not our willpower that's to blame.

The Boston Medical Center says approximately 45 million Americans go on a diet every year and Draffin is usually one of them. But in July 2021, after spending twenty years suffering from eating disorders or overly focused on dieting, she was fed up. Then she read a book that changed her life.

Author Alissa Rumsey says, diets do not work. And that's very, very clear through the research when it comes to intentional weight loss. Ninety to 97% of people will regain the weight that they lost within two to five years."

Rumsey is a registered dietitian and certified intuitive eating counselor. In her book, Unapologetic Eatingshe writes that we fail at diets because our bodies are trying to keep us alive.

"This is not because it's a person's lack of willpower or their lack of self-control, Rumsey says. This is a biological thing, like, this is their body trying to survive."

According to Rumsey, your body doesn't know you want to lose ten pounds to fit into those old jeans from high school. When you start restricting your food intake, it thinks you're in a famine and it wants to live. So it slows down your metabolism, makes you hyper focused on foods in hopes you'll actually eat something and when you do, it holds onto excess weight in case you decide to starve it again.

In a 2020 UK study of 14 popular diets, researchers found some of the 22-thousand people studied did see positive changes in their weight, cholesterol and blood pressure in the first six months. But after a year, those positive changes largely disappeared.

Nutrition Therapist and author Elyse Resch has been preaching this message since the 1990s. Diets simply don't work. They don't work because they create deprivation first of all and anytime we are deprived of something that's all we can think about and all we want, but even more foundational than that, is that they take away one's autonomy. Diets tell you from an outside source, what to eat, how much, when to eat, and have no regard for your own personal boundaries."

Resch co-wrote Intuitive Eatingwith Certified Eating Disorders Registered Dietician-Supervisor Evelyn Tribole. The book has sold over half a million copies and helps people make peace with food, free themselves from chronic dieting and rediscover the pleasures of eating.

Resch says, people don't question their height. They don't try to change it, they accept it, but they tend not to accept that their weight is just what they're meant to be."

Both she and Rumsey actively take an anti-diet approach in their teachings. They say this begins with rejecting dieting and learning to reconnect with your body. They call it a revolution.

According to Rumsey, it takes the focus off of weight when it comes to health, so it really encourages overall health and wellbeing rather than a focus on weight or size reduction. It's also a movement that holds that all human beings are worthy of respect. No matter what size of their body, no matter if they're healthy or not."

Auburn alumna committed to helping others overcome eating disorders through nutrition therapy – Office of Communications and Marketing

Helping others has become a lifes mission for Auburn University alumna Kerry McCarthy.

The 2012 graduate is making a difference in her community of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, through the nutrition therapy and wellness group Namaste Nourished. McCarthy, who earned a degree in nutrition and dietetics from Auburns College of Human Sciences, is dedicated to helping people overcome eating disorders to find balance and happiness in their lives.

Through Namaste Nourished, McCarthy and her colleagues provide nutrition therapy and body image work to those in need. Whether its anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, negative body image or a host of other disorders, McCarthys group practice helps individuals through their personal battles to find a path to a positive mental and physical health.

For McCarthy, a certified eating disorders registered dietitian, her career is a labor of love inspired by the realization that millions of Americans struggle with eating disorders of varying kinds.

Its way more common than people know, said McCarthy, a licensed and registered dietitian and nutritionist. Food is so central to connection with other people, and when you see people be able to get that control back, its so cool. Youre not just helping them with their relationship with food, its cascading into all other areas of their life.

Namaste Nourished works with area therapists, psychologists, treatment centers and outreach professionals in a comprehensive approach to treatment. By combining nutrition and wellness therapy with mental health treatment, McCarthy and her collaborators can help clients address their eating issues from multiple angles.

With eating disorders, its very multidisciplinary, and theres a lot of collaboration that goes on in the treatment of eating disorders, said McCarthy, who has worked hard to increase her mental health therapy knowledge through continuing education sessions and partnerships with therapists. When were doing this work, were literally changing the structure of someones brain. Were creating new patterns and new neural pathways in the brain, and just knowing youre helping someone do that is really nice. It creates that sustainable change.

We have a team, and the biggest players on the team are always going to be the dietitians and therapists. That can be licensed clinical social workers, licensed mental health counselors or psychologists. We are the main trio, and then depending on the clients circumstances, they could potentially have a psychiatrist or medical doctor involved and family support.

McCarthys team provides tailored treatment plans that are specific to the individual since everyone has varying needs, strengths, weaknesses and goals for their recovery.

Everyones treatment is so different, because everyones story is so different, McCarthy said. Theres so many different reasons why we eat food, and thats something I talk about with my clients. Its so layered, and we look at whether the disorder came about because of trauma, or if it came up because of unhelpful language and behaviors around food in their household or they have a genetic component that just causes the eating disorder. The care and treatment plan becomes so individualized.

Finding her passion project

After graduating from Auburn, McCarthy interned with Atlanta area sports dietitian Page Love and learned a great deal about eating disorders.

When I was interning with Page, it sparked a personal interest for me. I really saw firsthand how deeply people with eating disorders suffer, she said. I gave different areas of the field a chance when I was interning, but the counseling aspect of eating disorders just hit me differently.

Since you are such a key component in someones treatment as a dietitian, its not always that way for dietitians in other areas of the field. To play such an integral role in someones recovery of their life, both physically and emotionally, it feels really nice and is rewarding.

Reconnecting with the body

One of the main themes Namaste Nourished stresses is changing the dialogue about how food and dieting is viewed by their clients. Rather than label foods a certain way or focus on deprivation tactics common to most diet plans, McCarthy and her partners work to shift their clients mentality to a more positive place.

Our society loves to be very black and white or all or nothing about things, and it doesnt have to be that way, McCarthy said. So, even when Im talking to people who dont have eating disorders, my food philosophy doesnt change. If were talking about creating a healthier lifestyle, it feels better to talk about how I can incorporate more fruits and vegetables, more fiber or more water into my diet, rather than saying, What do I need to eliminate?

We dont like when things are taken away from us, because it doesnt feel good. So, if were talking about what we can add in, that feels a lot better, and I think just hits the brain a little differently. Also, the foods that folks tend to try to eliminate are typically foods that bring them joy, which is valuable for our emotional well-being.

That mentality shift can help a person reconnect their brains and bodies, setting the stage for improved mental and physical health.

In our society, we praise busyness and people being so busy where they say, Oh, Ive been so busy, I havent eaten anything all day. And for some reason, we praise that for being a good thing. Its actually not a good thing, and youre probably disconnected to your body and maybe the work youve been doing all day could have been done way more efficiently if you had eaten something.

Even dietingand Im talking about fad dietsis a disconnection with the body. Those are disorder eating patterns, and then you have eating disorders that are a mental health diagnosis where theres a much deeper-rooted factor other than just the manipulation of the food to change the body.

McCarthy also said avoiding labeling foods as good or bad should be avoided.

We start to talk about why its important to drop the labels where we say, This is a good food. This is a bad food. This is healthy. This is unhealthy, she said. What that does is it just sets up a lot of mental gymnastics in our heads, and it forms that disconnection from the body. I like to talk about the philosophy of all foods fit.

Secondly, what we want to try to do is create some kind of consistent eating pattern. The client and I will talk about different meals and will go into the science a little bit and talk about how combining certain kinds of foods is going to be helpful in regulating blood sugar and hunger.

Changing the dialogue

Shifting the dialogue and ones mindset can help reverse the negative patterns that are central to eating disorders. That can result in a person regulating their bodies, an achievement that can lead to better results with mental health professionals.

It gives the therapist a chance to have someone whos nourished and who has a nourished brain be able to start the therapeutic work, McCarthy said. We do certain goal setting around food, challenge certain belief systems, certain fears. So, even beginning to invite those signals back in and the connection to those signals, thats positive work that we do.

For people who really feel strongly in a negative way about their bodies, connecting to the body can feel very scary. So, we really have to have that strong rapport and build some trust before we even make some changes with their food.

Namaste Nourished also works with clients looking to make a positive and proactive life change by committing themselves to a healthier relationship with food.

Typically, when we hear that someone wants to make lifestyle changes, it means they want to lose weight, McCarthy said. When I talk to people who have that as a goal, I tell them I will never intentionally put someone on a plan of losing weight, because studies show that its not a sustainable goal to make. I will say that were going to focus on their behaviors, and one of three things will happentheyll either gain weight, theyll lose weight or their weight will stay the same.

Whatever happens, its not going to be because were trying to change their weight. Were trying to focus on behaviors and behavior changes. For some reason, we always give weight loss the credit for someone improving their health, when really its the behavior changes theyve been making. Those are the things that deserve the applause, not the decrease in weight.

McCarthywho celebrated the birth of her first child, Ainsley, with husband, Randy, on Dec. 2said the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the prevalence of eating disorders. That has made her work more important than ever before.

Weve definitely seen a big increase in either the onset of eating disorders or someone relapsing into their eating disorder because of the pandemic, McCarthy said. Throughout this hard time, its been nice to help people shift their coping skills and help in their recovery.
