Zac Efron’s ‘Baywatch’ Diet Helped Him Stop Craving Junk Food – SELF

Posted: March 31, 2017 at 11:45 pm

One view of the new Baywatch trailer will probably have you saying, "Holy buff Zac Efron !" The actor plays an Olympic swimmer-turned-lifeguard in the film, and he looks more toned and muscular than ever. We found out his body transformation didn't come without hard work. Last year, Efron told Men's Fitness magazine that he trained for 10 weeks for the film, working out five or six days a week, and sometimes twice a day. He paired his intense fitness regimen with a strict low-carb, low-sugar diet, too. He shared some of his healthy meals on Instagram , and they actually looked downright delicious. And Efron said sticking to healthy #eeeeeats helped to curb his junk food cravings.

"After a while your body stops craving junk food and you look forward to these meals," he told the magazine. "You go, 'Holy cow, I want kale and vinaigrette shredded with beets and a little bit of sweet potato!'"

He's right: Eating healthy for a sustained period of time can turn us off from our unhealthy cravings. Tanya Zuckerbrot , M.S., R.D., founder of the F-Factor Diet, tells SELF that studies support Efron's statements. "Theres science that supports why the cravings minimize, and there are studies that support that when you start eating healthier, you start craving healthier foods," Zuckerbrot says.

Let's explain junk food cravings. When you eat any type of carb , whether it's a complex carb (found in foods like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables) or a refined carb (like white bread, cakes, pasta, and white rice), your body breaks it down to its simplest formglucose, a form of sugar. When glucose enters the bloodstream, insulin gets secreted to carry the glucose to cells for energythat's the body "burning carbs" for energy, which is the primary fuel for the body. Complex carbs break down slowly, but refined carbs flood your system with this glucose (often with more than you can use at one time). If you eat refined carbs regularly, your body starts to expect a pattern of glucose. "The one day you choose not to have carbs, the body has secreted the insulin anywaythats the vicious cycle," Zuckerbrot says. The insulin is there, and your body is begging for all those carbs you promised it. "When people stop eating carbs or sugars or some of these refined foods or junk foods, the first few days they go through withdrawal. They dont feel wellthey feel weak, tired, shaky, cranky."

On top of this, sugar itself is seriously addictive. When you eat it, you get a hit of the feel-good brain chemicals dopamine and seratonin. It's the same basic brain response elicited by cocaine. "You then become addicted to that feeling, so every time you eat it you want to eat more," Gina Sam, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Center at the Mount Sinai Hospital, previously told SELF .

The good news: Zuckerbrot says you can kick those cravings in a few weeks by sticking to a diet that's high in fiber and low in refined carbs. (Efron says it took him two to three weeks to get his sugar cravings to subside.) When your body is experiencing "withdrawal" symptoms, it's in a state of very low blood sugar and trying to get back to a stable level. High-fiber foods, like complex carbs, take your body longer to digest, meaning glucose will be released more gradually and evenly. "When that blood sugar spike isn't experienced, the subsequent cravings aren't experienced either," Zuckerbrot says.

Even your taste buds will change to accommodate your new habits. Taste buds regenerate about every 11 days , so by the end of your withdrawal period you'll actually have a tongue that's more used to eating less sugary food, and you'll lose your taste for the sweet stuff (at least to some degree).

And as your body gets used to how good it feels running on healthy fuel, you might find yourself jonesing for kale and beets just like Zac Efron does.

10 Celebrity Weight Loss Tips That Actually Work – Cosmopolitan.com

Posted: March 31, 2017 at 11:45 pm

When it comes to weight loss among women in the public eye, you don't need science to see which strategies work. Here are the most effective weight-loss tricks, according to the celebs who've successfully used them to slim down.

1. Eat salad at every meal.

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi credits her postpartum weight loss to laying off carbs and amping up her veggie intake. "Salad is always on the menu with whatever dish I am making, she told People.

2. Write what you bite.

Carrie Underwood is a long-time food journaler who uses MyFitnessPal to record everything she eats. Otherwise, she says, her brain would never get the memo that she's eaten enough. "[It] helps me make better choices and pay attention to what I'm eating," she says.

3. At restaurants, order two appetizers instead of a starter and a main.

Getty

You could also opt for a main and a shared dessert if your sweet tooth is raging. It's this advice from Jennifer Lawrence's former trainer Dalton Wong that helped the actress tone up for body-baring roles like Mystique in X-Men: First Class. In the foreword of his book, The Feelgood Plan: Happier, Healthier & Slimmer in 15 Minutes a Day, Jennifer thanked him for teaching her life-changing weight-control lessons.

4. Plan ahead for hunger when you're out and about.

Getty

Instead of letting hunger catch her off-guard when she was commuting regularly between her home in Los Angeles to her work on The View in New York City, Candace Cameron Bure planned her meals and snacks meticulously: She'd eat before cross-country flights to avoid settling on airplane food, and pack snacks like protein bars to fuel up for workouts. It's one reason why the actress got into the best shape of her life during this hectic phase.

5. During workouts, stick to the Bs.

When shaping up for her Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood, Britney Spears's trainer Tony Martinez had her focus on what he calls the "Four Bs": Basketball jump shots, Backwards walking, Balancing on one leg while doing medicine-ball slams, and Bicycling. But there's a fifth "B" in Britney's routine, and it stands for Basics. On Instagram, she's posted push-ups, core work, bar curls, and squats moves anyone can do.

6. Strive for a diet that's pretty good not perfect.

Although Blake Lively gave birth to her daughter in December 2014, and had to shape up quickly to play Nancy in The Shallows the following year, she didn't try to live a life devoid of pizza or pasta (or joy), or count a single calorie to reach her goals. Instead, she simply stuck to a mostly homemade, balanced diet of proteins, vegetables, fruits, slow-burning starches like sweet potatoes, plus healthy fats like avocado, coconut oil, and grass-fed butter, according to Blake's trainer Don Saladino. Her goal: To put good-for-you foods into her body at least 80 percent of the time and to leave room for treats like mac and cheese when cravings call (as they do!).

7. Make wellness *NOT* weight loss your goal.

Getty

It worked for Lena Dunham who, for the record, is *NOT* trying to lose weight not even a little! "Right now, I'm struggling to control my endometriosis through a healthy diet and exercise," she recently captioned a photo posted to Instagram. The girl boss is working out with Tracy Anderson, doing yoga, and trying to eat despite an appetite that's hindered stress linked to current events. The same goes for Melissa McCarthy, who told Life & Style back in 2015 that training for fight scenes in Spy helped her stop worrying about her weight. "I think there's something to kinda loosening up and not being so nervous and rigid about it that, bizarrely, has worked," she said.

8. Include protein in every meal.

Getty

Although calorie-counters may be tempted to skimp on protein in favor of lower-calorie veggies, it's difficult to keep food cravings a bay when you're constantly starving which is exactly what happens when you don't get enough protein. Kim Kardashian, for example, lost her baby weight by following a meal plan that included a 6-ounce serving of protein with every single meal of the day, including cheesy eggs for breakfast, fish for lunch, and lean chicken breast for dinner. If her diet sounds filling, that's because it is, and it's proof you don't have to go hungry to shed pounds.

9. Avoid eating late at night and early in the morning.

Jennifer Hudson shrunk from a size 16 to 6 after teaming up with Weight Watchers in 2010, and she's since maintained her 80-pound weight loss. In a recent interview with the UK television show, Lorraine, she said one of the keys to maintaining her impressive weight loss is follow common sense when it comes to meal timing. "I'm very careful and cautious of what I'm eating," she said. "If it's early in the morning, [I tell myself] 'OK, I would still be asleep right now, So I'm not going to eat.'" And although she didn't cite specific hours during which she eats or fasts, the approach follows recent research that suggests limiting your eating hours can protect you from weight gain.

10. Hire help.

Getty

Childcare, personal training, and diet counseling may not come cheap, but it sure makes rapid weight loss easier at least according to Chrissy Teigen, who dropped this truth bomb during a Today Show cameo in November 2016. On the show, she gave away what may be the biggest celebrity weight-loss secret of all: "We have nutritionists, we have dietitians, we have trainers, we have our own schedules, we have nannies. We have people who make it possible for us to get back into shape. But nobody should feel like thats normal, or like thats realistic," she said.

The Best Apps For Healthy Weight Loss – Huffington Post

Posted: March 31, 2017 at 11:45 pm

Weight loss can be a challenge no matter who you are. However, theres an overwhelming amount of technology to help make it easier.

But where to begin? A quick search for weight loss apps on a smartphone turns up hundreds of results. Thats a lot of information, and potentially, a lot of wasted money figuring out which one is best.

Thats why were here to help. We picked out several popular smartphone apps with good reviews and noble missions. Some are free with the option to upgrade, others cost a nominal amount of money to download. All of the selections go above and beyond a simple calorie tracker and provide much of what research shows you need toachieve a healthy weight loss goal: Health and food data, strong community support, accountability and encouragement.

Take a look at the suggestions below and see if theres one that might be right for you:

Health experts theorize thatwriting down what you eatcan help you lose weight. My Fitness Pal is popular choice for a digital food diary, given its database of more than 6 million foods and meals. The app also syncs to wearables like Fitbit, Jawbone UP and Garmin to help you log your exercise. Its compatible for Apple and Android phones.

The Fooducate app points you in the direction of healthier, more wholesome food choices. The app scans a packaged items barcode and produces a letter score (A, B, C or D) based on its nutritional value. The app analyzes the item and reveals information about the ingredients, such as the amounts of added sugar, preservatives, MSG and controversial food colorings. The program aims to help users learn about a products pros and cons in order to think about whether eating it makes sense for weight loss goals and overall health. The app is compatible for iPhones and Androids.

Locavore tells you about which fruits and vegetables are in season based on your location. It also instructs you where to find that produce by pointing you in the direction of local farmers markets and farms that are open in your area. The app wants you to cook with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients for the best culinary experience. That could be a big help:Research shows that some of the healthiest diets around the world are heavy in produce and whole foods. Locavore is stocked with recipes, too, so you can put those ingredients to good use.The app is free and iOS and Android compatible.

Similar to My Fitness Pal, the Lose It app sets you up with a personalized calorie budget based on your health goals. You can search foods, scan packaged products or take a photo of an item to track it in the app. You can also track your exercise and engage in the apps community center to get support, inspiration or try a challenge with other members. The Lose It app syncs with several wearables such as Fitbit, Jawbone, MapMyFitness and RunKeeper. A good version of the app is free. Upgrading to the premium version costs $39.99 a year, and youll get extra features such as meal planning and additional nutritional breakdowns. Its compatible for Apple and Android phones.

If weight loss is a science that ultimately comes down to calories consumed versus calories burned, then it would be helpful to know how many calories youre eating. But honestly what do they really look like?

Thats the exact question the Calorific app is out to answer. The app is stocked with beautiful photos that depict 200-calorie portions of food. Its a fun, visual way to learn about portion sizes without having to scour labels. The app is free and is compatible on an iPhone and iPad.

The Pact app puts your money where your mouth is truly. Heres how it works: Youll make a weekly commitment, or pact, to meet an exercise goal or eat healthier. Then youll decide how much money you are willing to pay other users if you break the pact. If you meet all of your commitments, youll earn a cash reward paid by other members who did not meet their goals. Rewards usually range from a few cents to $5 depending on how many pacts you make. And if you dont meet your goals, be prepared to lose your cash. The app is compatible for Apple and Android devices.

Going out to dinner can be a pain when youre watching what you eat, but the Healthy Out app tries to make it easier for you. You tell the app your location and your dietary restrictions (like being low carb, for example). The app then tells you which dishes are being served at restaurants around you that meet your needs. It also explains how to modify a meal once you get there to make it fit your food goals. The app is free and is available for Apple and Android users.

Getting to a healthy weight isnt just about food, but your movement, too. The Couch To 5Kprogram eases non-runners into jogging 3.1 miles also known as a 5K, or a five kilometer distance comfortably and without stopping. The smartphone app is a nine-week plan, so you should expect to do three workouts a week, each 30 minutes long.

Though it may be tempting to run out ahead of your training plan, resist the urge, the apps website states. If the program feels too strenuous, just lengthen it. Patience is the key.

The program works well even if other apps like Spotify are open on your phone. Youll hear the apps instructions to walk or run over the music. The app costs $2.99 to download and is compatible for Apple and Android devices.

Consumer Reports: New Ads for Contrave Weight Loss Pill

CONSUMER REPORTS -- You may have seen the television commercials for the prescription weight-loss pill Contrave. Contrave is the combination of two older drugs - the antidepressant bupropion and the addiction-treatment drug naltrexone. Its ads say the drug works on the brain to reduce hunger and control cravings. The FDA approved Contrave is for obese people or who are overweight with a body mass index of 27 or higher AND who also suffer from serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes.

The commercial cites studies in which patients who took Contrave along with diet and exercise lost approximately 2 to 4 times more weight than those who did diet and exercise alone. However, a Consumer Reports analysis of the 3 clinical trials used to gain FDA approval of the drug, shows the drug works but the amount of additional weight loss is small and could pose serious health risks.

Contrave can cause anxiety, insomnia and headaches. But also serious health problems, such as liver damage, seizures, increased blood pressure and possible heart risks. The people who took it up to 56 weeks lost only five to nine pounds more on average than those who took a placebo.

Consumer Reports advises to speak with your doctor about the risks and different weight-loss options. Consumer Reports health experts say its best to lose weight the safer, proven way, by eating less and exercising.

If you've been unable to lose weight on your own, ask your doctor about intensive behavioral programs that have at least 12 sessions a year and include multiple strategies to help you switch to a healthier diet and increase physical activity.

Why can’t I lose weight? 5 reasons your diet isn’t working – Today.com

Losing weight isnt easy and dieters often fail multiple times before getting it right.

The reasons are multifaceted. Many assume that exercise will solve the weight-loss dilemma it wont or that fat will make you fat. Wrong again.

Here are five reasons your diet may be doomed:

Calories from refined carbohydrates and sugar cause you to eat more, without feeling satisfied. Calories from healthy fats, fiber rich sources, and protein, however are metabolized differently and more likely to lead to effective weight loss. Author Michael Pollen defined food as something that comes from nature, was fed from nature, and will eventually rot.

Are you starting your day with empty carbs? Try oatmeal with fruits and nuts for a healthy breakfast.

Cereal, toast with jam, or a big glass of OJ are breakfast staples, but studies show that starting the day with protein, instead of sugary carbohydrates leads to reduced hunger and cravings later in the day. Aim for at least 15 grams of high quality protein in the morning, such as plain yogurt with mixed nuts and hempseed, a plant based protein shake, scrambled eggs, or nut butter on sprouted bread.

Sleep is glorious, and the benefits of getting enough of it are numerous. Studies show clear associations between a lack of sleep with overeating, weight gain, and obesity. If youre struggling with your weight loss efforts, getting at least 8 hours a sleep a night may make all the difference.

RELATED: 11 ways to get to sleep faster

We often eat because we are bored, stressed, tired, thirsty, or simply because our favorite show is on. Instead, we should view food as fuel, not entertainment. I advise my patients to put themselves on a hunger scale with 1 being starving and 10 being stuffed. Only at a 3 or a 4 should they eat, and they should stop at 5 or 6. Listening to your hunger isnt always easy, but master it and your chances of weight loss go up.

RELATED: Try the diet that will make your cravings go away

One study found that individuals that had successfully lost weight were frequently met with challenges with friends, family and co-workers who undermined weight-loss efforts. In response, they would regain the weight.

A recent study found that Americans might be less likely to attempt weight loss due to simply giving up after many attempts or increasing fat acceptance in the United States. A recent study found that people had a hard time sticking to a diet when eating out or simply eating with friends.

Scottish MMA promoter David Galbraith looking to end extreme weight cutting with no dehydration policy – Scottish Daily Record

Posted: March 31, 2017 at 11:44 pm

The issue of extreme weight cutting in MMA has been a bone of contention for many years now. It is still an all too common, yet hugely dangerous practice, which can be fatal if fighters get it wrong.

Essentially, weight cutting is the process of rapid weight loss in the hours before a fight. The fighter wants to qualify for as low a weight division as possible so they can gain a size and strength advantage over their opponent. The fighter does this by using various methods to extract as much water from their body as possible.

Whilst the dangers associated with extreme weight cutting can easily affect the professional athlete that competes on the global stage, it is fighters that compete on the regional circuit that are arguably more at risk as the vast majority of up and coming fighters do not have access to the appropriate level of nutritional or medical expertise necessary to guide them safely through an extreme weight cut.

This is something David Galbraith, a former professional MMA fighter and current owner of NewLife Gym, Resurgence Fight Team and MMA promotion SOMMA wants to change. For Galbraith, a fighters safety, both short and long term, is paramount and he plans on leading the charge in the UK to eliminate extreme weight cutting from the sport.

Galbraith said: NewLife Gym, Resurgence Fight Team and SOMMA are taking major steps to ensure the welfare of our fighters and to protect the longevity of our sport.

We have decided to formally implement a no dehydration policy for weight cuts. That means no saunas, no salt baths, no water loading or any other means of excessive heat based practice to ensure a fighter makes weight.

As a retired pro fighter myself, I have learnt from my past mistakes and over the course of the last three years I have actively taken steps to phase out excessive weight cutting. Our team is matched at a realistic weight and where appropriate we favour catch-weight fights.

Our athletes are supported throughout their entire fight camp to ensure they are on track to make weight. On our last show, SOMMA2, 90% of the team made weight via diet and nutrition alone with no need for heat based tactics.

We fully recognise the requirement for expert guidance when it comes to making fight weight and we are in talks with a well-regarded nutrition expert who shares our passion for safe and responsible weight cuts. Additionally, we have brought on board PK Fitness who are strength and conditioning specialists to work closely with our team to ensure we are not only reaching, but delivering on the above goals.

Unfortunately, weight cutting is something that has touched the hearts of many people due to the recent events which took place in Thailand with young Jordan Coe. I want to be clear that this isnt a reaction to his situation as we had already made these plans and have been putting measures in place over the last three years. It was by chance that our situation has coincided with this tragedy.

We are also implementing guidelines set by the The Scottish Government, Safe MMA & IMMAF which means our full Fight Team will be Safe MMA registered. NewLife Gym will pay each fighters membership for the first 12 months - but our intention is that we can continue to finance the membership for the duration of the fighters career with Resurgence.

In addition, all of our fighters and all the fighters competing on SOMMA will undergo blood tests taken by our in house doctor - who was the former doctor for major European promotion ACB.

We will be testing for blood borne viruses; Hep B, Hep C and HIV. The cost of the blood testing will initially be absorbed by NewLife Gym so the fighters wont need to dig into their own pockets. Furthermore, each fighter will be required to undergo the routine medical checks as advised by Safe MMA & IMMAF.

I firmly believe the above actions are truly in the best interests of fighter safety and this sentiment is echoed by my team of coaches, students and key players with in the MMA community. This is not an exhaustive list of actions. This is simply the start of a much larger campaign to raise the standards of quality and safety of MMA in Scotland and beyond.

Frontline Homecare Professionals Make a Difference in Keeping Diabetes In Check – Huffington Post

Posted: March 31, 2017 at 11:44 pm

When a 92-year-old woman with dementia in my companys managed long term care (MLTC) plan had to switch from oral diabetes medication to insulin recently, Yael Reich, a nurse diabetes specialist with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY), was the person who arranged for a friend to administer the shots. In her dual role as diabetes educator and complex case manager, Yael advises VNSNY nurses across New York City, Westchester and Nassau on how to help our patients and health plan members with diabetes manage their glucose levels. Approximately one-third of our patients have diabetes in addition to their primary diagnosis, says Yael, whos worked with VNSNY for 23 years and has been a diabetes specialist and educator since 2004. This means our nurses are treating thousands of patients with diabetes on any given day.

Type 2 diabetes, in which a persons blood glucose levels become chronically elevated, can lead to kidney and eye damage, cardiovascular disease and other health problems. In addition to reviewing with our nurses and their patients the proper way to administer diabetes medications that keep blood glucose levels under control, Yael will also explain to them how weight loss, a healthy diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes can help prevent diabetes in those who are at risk of developing it, and minimize the need for medication in those who already have diabetes.

According to the CDC, more than 29 million Americans are living with diabetes, and 86 million are living with prediabetes, a serious health condition that increases a persons risk of type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases. With type 2 diabetes rates in the U.S. continuing to riseone in eleven Americans now has the disease, according to the most recent estimates, including one out of four people aged 65 or olderunderstanding how to prevent and control the condition through lifestyle changes and proper medical care is more important than ever. And since people who have diabetes or are at high risk of developing the condition make up a disproportionate share of home care patients and clients, the visiting nurses and nurse educators employed by home care agencies like VNSNY play a lead role in helping to keep this dangerous condition in check.

Bridging the Gap Between Medical Advice and How People Really Live

One important way that frontline home care clinicians make a difference is by helping their patients bridge the gap between advice they receive from medical professionals and taking steps to follow this advice on a daily basis in the real world. For example, when registered nurse Sheniqua Johnson was providing care recently for a patient with elevated blood glucose levels, her patient agreed readily with her advice to avoid foods high in sugar and processed carbohydratesbut then consistently refused to act on her recommendations. He didnt want someone coming in from the outside telling him what to do, Sheniqua says. On speaking with him further during her home visits, she learned that he was originally from West Africa, and with that information in hand, she was able to engage him around healthy foods hed grown up with and steer him toward a healthier diet.

By visiting with people in their homes, our nurses and nurse educators also come to understand real-life barriers that may not be as obvious to other medical professionals. Fresh vegetables and fruit are often difficult to access in lower income neighborhoods, and can be costly when they are available. As a result, people frequently turn to more convenient and affordablebut less healthyalternatives. Nurse Johnson recalls caring for a woman who was struggling with diabetes, and noticing that her kitchen shelves were crowded with boxes of sugar-sweetened cereal. To save money, thats what I eat for dinner, the woman told her, explaining that she thought she was following her doctors instructions. Johnson was able to help her patient identify easy-to-prepare alternative foods, such as frozen vegetables and lentils, in her local grocery store, that she could buy for the same price to provide better nutrition and help keep blood glucose levels in check.

Our frontline clinicians can also help people who havent developed diabetes identify and correct their risk factors, by walking them through diabetes risk assessments such as the one the American Diabetes Association (ADA) offers onlinea test which you can take yourself by accessing it here. When an assessment indicates that someones risk of developing type 2 diabetes is high, our clinicians will then arrange for them to have their blood glucose levels tested to determine whether they have diabetes or prediabetes (an early warning sign that blood glucose levels arent being adequately controlled).

Encouraging Daily Diabetes-Fighting Behavior

Whether someone has diabetes, prediabetes, or is simply at risk of getting the disease, our nurses and diabetes educators regularly encourage them to take evidence-based steps to prevent diabetes from developing, or manage their condition more effectivelyincluding losing weight, engaging in physical activity each day, and eating healthier foods. Many of our home health aides are now also trained as Health Coaches, and are using proven techniques such as motivational interviewing to help patients make and maintain important lifestyle changes that help them better manage their diabetes and other chronic medical conditions.

In addition to frontline nurses, diabetes educators and home health aides at home care agencies, community-based clinicians also play a significant role in combating the diabetes epidemic. Primary care physicians now routinely refer patients to diabetes educators for practical advice on how to make changes in their daily diets and safely increase physical activity. This is one more confirmation that when it comes to defeating type 2 diabetes, the solution begins at home.

Start your workday the right way with the news that matters most.
