I’ve Spent 10 Years Helping People Lose Weight Here Are My Best Tips – Greatist

Posted: February 23, 2017 at 3:41 pm

For 10 years, Ive been the force behind MyBodyTutor.com, which simplifies the weight-loss process into practical, sustainable behaviors that help you lose weight and actually keep it off. It hasnt always been easy, but I believed enough in my program to quit my comfortable job for it. Ive since made a career out of working with clients who have "tried everything" but just havent managed to keep the weight off. One client had attempted 16 different programs before finding success with me.

The truth is, you can lose weight with almost any program, but sustaining that weight loss is a different story altogether. My program has been a success because clients can fly the nest after acquiring the necessary skillsI dont want anyone to come back as repeat business. Here the top weight-loss strategies that make my clients so successful.

Tension relief is one of the top reasons we overeat and make poor food choices. When something causes us to feel tense, we seek to alleviate that feeling often with overly indulgent food and drinks. As we get older, we make less time for fun, which leads to burnout.

What defines fun for you? Consider signing up for art classes, salsa lessons, volunteering, board games, meditation, yoga, even cooking healthier spins on your favorite foods. Focusing on fun might sound trite, but there's a good reason my most successful clients create time for it: The more fun we have, the less we'll rely on food and drink to create it for us.

...what youre craving is avoidance. When we indulge, were after the experience of eatingthe escape and distraction. So when you want to eat an entire pint of ice cream, what youre really after is that sense of reward. But food wont give you what you're truly looking for, so when youre craving something that will hamper your goals, ask yourself: "If I could use a magic button to change something in my life right now, what would I use it for?" This will help you identify whats really bothering you. For example, if youre unhappy with your career, or youre seeking a better relationship with your partner, identifying these issues will help you map out a plan of action instead of covering up a desire with temporary relief in the form of dessert.

You know how some people can work their butts off in the gymeven with a trainerand they dont end up looking any different? You can't out-exercise a poor diet; what you do between exercise matters most. While exercise is the key to energy and a better mood, diet is the key to weight loss.

We often have to battle between our short-term, irrational mind and our long-term, rational mind. When were hungry, stressed, or tired, its harder to make good choices. Besides, when was the last time you were "in the mood" for grilled chicken and vegetables when you felt ravenous? Sure, you might not always follow through with your healthy-eating plans, but the chances youll do so increase dramatically when you actually have a plan in the first place. You dont get any bonus points for using heroic willpower rather than simple planning, so why not make it easier on yourself? My most successful clients always have healthy food ready to go in the fridgethis just makes good choices easier.

This might sound like common sense, but its not common practice. You cant expect to stick with a planthat wont work in the long run, but people keep attempting absurd fad diets. Forget about them! You can only follow a cookie, shake, grapefruit, cabbage, no-carb, and no-fun diet for so longand my most successful clients avoid these diets. Before you start any weight-loss program, ask yourself, "Can I see myself eating like this in five years from now?" If the answer is no, then the diet youre thinking about starting isnt going to work. Give yourself a chance to succeed from the start.

One of the top reasons people are overweight is because they eat when they're emotionally hungry, not physically hungry. Physical hunger comes on gradually and can be satisfied with any food. It passes what I call the "Broccoli Test."

Emotional hunger comes on suddenly. It feels urgentand is marked by specific food cravings. You can have snack after snack, and nothing hits the spot. This is because you're not hungry for foodyou're hungry for something else. So when youre about to eat, pause and ask yourself, "Am I hungry or am I eating to change the way I feel?" This will allow you to catch yourself if you're about to eat for emotional reasons, not out of true hunger.

Ill never forget when a client told me that before starting one of her many failed diet attempts, she was told to sign a contract stating shed never indulge in any of her favorite desserts again. If only it were that easythats like saying "Dont be sad" to someone whos depressed. Its ridiculous. Never indulging again isnt sustainable... or even desirable.

You should eat treats when theyre special to you. My rule is that your special indulgence should pass the "Will I remember this in two weeks?" test. Most of the indulgences we eat arent remarkabletheyre bags of chips or boxes of stale-tasting cookies from a convenience store. The idea is to make the most of routine meals and indulge when its truly worth your while. Wait for a memorable treat like a high-quality pastry from your favorite shop.

The real secret to sustainable weight loss is that there is no secret. It's about eating well, exercising and doing these consistently. Understanding what gets in the way of consistencyand how to be more steady in your effortsis the only way to stick with a plan and get the results you really want.

(CNN) - Wendy Williams is not the woman she used to be -- and she's not going back.

The talk show host has shed 50 pounds and recently told E! that she's keeping the weight off.

"I did it on my own and I love it because I no longer have to do that fight with clothing," Williams said.

Being larger and worrying about how she might look in clothing are things that "get in the way of being a good host for the people," she said.

In October, Williams shared with fans during a post-show segment that she lost the weight over a three-year period.

"This is as good as it's going to get," she told E!. "I'm not gonna fight my body anymore, I've lost the weight, I feel fantastic."

Williams said she's maintaining her weight loss by eating better and not skipping breakfast.

"I've learned to be extremely healthy regarding morning eating," she said. "I was doing it all wrong before."

Man loses 50 pounds by playing a VR game – The Daily Dot

Posted: February 23, 2017 at 3:40 pm

Virtual reality gives you the chance to experience new worlds, play the most immersive gaming experience available to modern consumers, and even get some indoor exercisesome pretty darn effective exercise, it turns out. One HTC Vive owner has managed to lose more than 50 pounds over the past five months by regularly playing a game on his VR headset.

In an interview with UploadVR, Job Stauffer explained how he lost 50 pounds playing the VR game Soundboxing. Soundboxingis a game that lets you select a video via YouTube that plays on your VR headset's screen. The game then projects objects that fly at you to the beat of the music. The aim of the game is to punch each of those objects while you hold a pair of controllers in your hands.

"When I first started out I spent like 20 minutes in the headset," Stauffer said. "Twenty then became 25 and 25 became 45 and 45 became an hour and sometimes an hour would become 90 minutes." He eventually bought a set of one pound weighted gloves, which "may not sound like much," but made his workout sessions even harder by forcing him to engage his upper body more. And as of last week, that's translated into some serious weight loss.

Stauffer began his journey after hitting more than 300 pounds on the scale. He was experiencing regular headaches and other health ailments, and his doctor essentially gave him an ultimatum: You need to start losing weight, or you could die. Unable to start jogging outside due the extra weight (and the serious impact it would have on his joints), and unmotivated by the idea of hitting the gym, Stauffer, who works in the video game industry, decided to give some VR-based workout games a try. Soundboxing ended up being a natural fit.

Now that he's lost this initial weight, he can safely head to the gym and add more traditional workouts such as weight lifting and rowing to the mix, too.

Despite sounding rather sweaty, Stauffer's experience is inspiring others to give VR-based exercise a try using Soundboxing and other games. Perhaps this is the beginning of a new home fitness revolution. Is there a Jane Fonda VR app out there?

Diet Doc Provides Customized And Healthy Weight Loss Alternatives To Starvation-Based hCG Diet – Digital Journal

Posted: February 23, 2017 at 3:40 pm

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwired - February 22, 2017) - When it comes to weight loss, some of the most important factors include genetics, general health, daily behavior and physical activities. Based on research, dieting is the most important component that affects weight gain or weight loss. By improving eating behavior, for instance, one can dramatically affect their weight. This is why emotional eating, binge eating and other common dietary abnormalities can have long-term effects of body weight. Effective weight loss generally involves losing more calories than you gain. Because one pound of weight is equivalent to 3,500 calories, one needs to reduce caloric intake by 500-1000 calories per day in order to lose 1-2 pounds per week. However, this type of extreme dieting is often starvation-based and therefore risky.

The starvation approach to dieting is nothing new. For example, the original hCG diet from the 1950s, also called the Simeons method, was practically a starvation diet that limited daily consumption to 500 calories. It led to many harmful side effects ranging from weakness to muscle loss. According to the Obesity Medicine Association, the hCG-based Simeons method and diet for weight loss is unsafe and not recommended.

There are healthy alternatives to dieting, however, and doctor-supervised dieting is always the safest approach. hCG can be applied more safely with a flexible diet program that necessitates between 800 to 1250 calories daily without reducing the rate of rapid weight loss. The Simeons method for hCG dieting is not only outdated but also unnecessary and unrecommended. High-calorie programs offering safe weight loss are the ideal option for patients considering the hCG diet treatment. Doctor-supervision and diet customization based on nutritional needs is highly recommended.

At Diet Doc, patients can get a thorough understanding of the weight loss needs and develop an individualized diet based on their nutritional needs or even their genetics. All Diet Doc programs, provide a doctor-supervised, customized diet plan.Instead of encouraging patients to adopt harmful dietary practices with no prior medical knowledge, Diet Doc consults with patients to provide a detailed weight loss plan based on their nutritional needs and medical history. The increase of metabolism operates for as long as the exercise goes on. Use these some simple diet and exercise hacks below that will help you slim down quickly and safely without screwing up your metabolism.

One of the simplest and cheapest ways to make your metabolism strong is to drink water when you wake up. While you are sleeping, your bodys metabolic function slows down unless you woke up in the middle of the night to swig some water.

In a recent research, a person who did a 25-minute workout after having 2-3cups of green tea, have lost an average of two or more pounds including belly fat.

According to a study, men or women who drink milk daily are more likely to lose weight. Protein in milk helps in muscle growth too.

Breakfastis like a fuel to the body, so do start your day with protein.A high-protein breakfast takes longer to move through the stomach, making one to feel hungry late.

Stress is one of the main cause of slow metabolism. It makes the body to metabolize food more slowly. So quit stress and enjoy your life.

Why Is Kim Kardashian Wearing a Garbage Bag Sweatsuit to Lose Weight? – Shape Magazine

Posted: February 23, 2017 at 3:40 pm

Sometimes, Kim Kardashian is relatable. We totally felt for her when she dealt with anxiety after her Paris robberyand when shestuck by Kanye in a crisis. On the other hand, she's been known to do some pretty extreme things to get the appearance she wants, like wearing a corset and getting her stretch marks removed. While we're all for doing things to make yourself feel good about how you look, sometimes Kim takes it a little too far.

Case in point: one of her most recent Snapchat stories. The reality star pans the camera around her gym in the style of her usual workout Snaps, but instead of just showing off her moves of the day, Kim points the camera downward at herself to show that she's wearing a full-on garbage-bag-style sweatsuit. You might remember this style from this past summer when Khloe Kardashian shared why she wears one during cardio and weight workouts.

She's also added the caption "7 lbs to go to get to 115 lbs." But will wearing one of these actually help you drop weight? The short answer is yes, but the long answer is more complicated. "The garbage bag strategy is a highly-controversial, old-school thermogenic method that works for weight loss in a way that's similar to sitting in a sauna," says Mike Clancy, C.S.C.S. and founder of MikeClancyTraining. "You simply put your body in a heated environment so it starts to release water (sweat) to cool you down." This process continues until your body has returned to its normal temperature, usually when you stop exercising. "In this process of releasing water, your body can shrink down five to ten pounds," says Clancy. That might sound appealing, but he adds that "this method of sweating out the last few pounds is extremely dangerous because your body is dehydrated and the stress on your internal organs can quickly land you in a hospital." Yikes! So yeah, it's probably not a good idea to try this on your own.

In Kim's case, her Snap clearly shows that her trainer is there to supervise, but what's more worrying is that fans watching might think this is a good idea to try at home when they're trying to shed weight. But there's another important reason why you shouldn't use this method. "You'll gain the weight back quickly, most likely as soon as you start drinking water after your workout," says Dani Muckley, director of fitness at Studio Three in Chicago. In other words, the risk of dehydration is 100 percent not worth it.

So what can you do instead to help you lose those last few pounds? "A healthier alternative would be to realize that there truly is no quick fix to weight loss," says Muckley. "Instead, healthy weight loss is the result of a dedicated nutritional plan, workout regimen, and requisite recovery." We couldn't agree more. But if you do want to try a specific workout method, Clancy has a suggestion. "A safer alternative to this tactic would be doing a sustained, fasted cardio in the morning while drinking plenty of fluids," he says. That means you wait until after you work out to eat. "A favorite of my clients' is walking uphill on a treadmill on a high incline for 30 to 40 minutes before breakfast," he explains. And unlike Kim's strategy, this kind of cardio is more likely to use adipose tissue (aka fat) for workout fuel, so the results will actually last.
