Overall health has always been a hot topic of conversation, and inevitably talk of weight issues takes center stage. Our registered dietitians took the following factors into consideration when reviewing and choosing these apps: Range of features, ease of use, cost, community and social networking opportunities, dietary preferences, and ability to log fitness, sleep and hydration. We also looked for apps that encouraged mindfulness and relaxation techniques and ones that were rated the highest among users on both Android and iOS.

When selecting the ideal weight loss app, you'll want to consider the following:

Meeting your wellness targets: Not all apps are created equal, so its important to find one that is tailored to your needs and lifestyle. If you travel a lot maybe you may want choose an app that has a large database and contains both local and international brands. If you cook at home, look for an app that welcomes a variety of ways to track such as with photographs or by entering recipes. Apps that provides healthy recipe ideas and substitutions may also be a great choice if you need guidance with meal prep.

Affordability: Most apps offer some sort of free trial, so you can give it a road test before committing to the full month or year subscription. Our experts say its important to carefully compare advantages of both short term and longer term commitments. The great thing about apps is that you can figure out if it's going to work for you after a few tries, so feel free to experiment and test it out for a month or two before you make a major commitment.

Community: If you are motivated by the shared experiences of others, look for an app with larger membership numbers and greater social opportunities, such as Facebook groups. Check out the activity and quality of interactions on the apps social media platforms before committing.

The experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab stress that these apps are not regulated and many are not formulated with dietary or medical experts. In addition, these apps require some work on your part, so it depends on how much time and effort you can commit to logging your daily foods. For many people, these systems work well because they hold them accountable for the foods they eat, although research is mixed on the effectiveness of apps. The concept is akin to a financial budget, which works only if you accurately track of your spending. When you are logging everything that you consume, you might be surprised at how many calories you are taking in, and that could encourage you to make different choices. As a bonus, these apps can help to keep you on track with staying properly hydrated and maintaining physical activity. Basically, its up to you to get the most benefit out of these apps.

Take note: For individuals with a history of disordered eating, logging calories could be associated with unhealthy dieting practices. In this instance, the use of weight loss apps should be avoided or monitored closely by a healthcare provider.

Weight loss apps arent for everyone, but they can be a useful tool to help to educate you about your diet and to teach you how to make healthier choices. It is always important to remember that there are many factors that go into successful weight loss including setting a realistic weight range that works for you and that you can maintain without feeling restricted. Genetics, life stage and overall health can also play a role.

Remember that there is no magic pill for weight loss; the goal should always be to improve your overall health and to learn how to make better choices when it comes to food and nutrition.

A well-balanced diet should consist of plenty of nonstarchy vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, whole grains, nuts, seeds and fruit. If you can use these apps to help you add more vegetables to your meals and to eliminate sugary foods and beverages while becoming more aware of what you consume, then it's a win.

Expert Suggests Ditching This One Ingredient In Your Diet If You Have Thyroid – NDTV Food

Posted: August 25, 2022 at 2:10 am

Our health largely depends on our diet. The foods that we eat directly or indirectly impact our ability to stave off illnesses or to deal with them. Taking medications is not the only answer. Thyroid, for instance, can be managed to a great extent through diet. Are you not able to lose weight despite putting in all efforts or have inexplicably gained weight? Are you constantly tired? Get yourself tested. And if you are already dealing with thyroid, here we have a tip coming from an expert that may help you immensely. Read on to know more.

Nutritionist Rashi Chowdhary suggests eliminating one ingredient from your diet and that is - gluten. Through a post on her Instagram handle, she explains why gluten is not good for those with auto immune thyroid.

(Also Read:Superfoods For Thyroid: 7 Foods That You May Add To Your Diet)

"The molecular structure of gliadin which is the protein portion in wheat resembles the molecular structure of the thyroid gland. When wheat is getting digested, the gliadin reaches your gut barrier (stomach lining) and enters the blood stream. Your immune system starts to attack it looking at it as a foreign body but in the process, it also attacks your thyroid tissue since they both look so similar. So your healthy thyroid tissue gets attacked and more problems occur with your thyroid gland," Rashi Chowdhary explains.

Foods like wheat flour, barley, oats, eye, semolina and other cereals and breads are said to have high gluten content. Desserts like cakes and cookies made with flours are also considered gluten-rich. Even beer is high in gluten.

While some of these foods are also considered healthy, is it a good idea to completely shut them out? We say, it's best to consult your doctor before making any major changes in your diet. Meanwhile, maybe you can avoid excessive consumption of gluten.

Want to follow a gluten-free diet? Here are somegluten-free recipes you can look into.

HelloFresh launches special diet Green Chef brand in the Netherlands where 35% of consumers follow a nutrition rule

Meal kit provider HelloFreshhas launched its special diet Green Chef brand in the Netherlands after spotting strong interest in special diets among consumers in the country.

The Berlin-based business operates in the UK, US, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Australia, Austria, Switzerland, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, Franceand Denmark. Its weekly meal kits come with pre-packaged fresh ingredients and cooking instructions and take typically 30 minutes to prepare.

Green Chef, which plans meals to fit around customers healthy eating goals, was founded in the US and later acquired by HelloFresh in early 2018. It has since been scaled up.

Following Green Chef's success in the US, and a successfulexpansion to the United Kingdomin 2021, the company is now introducing the brand for health-conscious customers to the Netherlands.

Green Chefs value proposition provides the perfect opportunity to target distinct customer segments, said HelloFresh. For this purpose HelloFresh has tailored the brand and product proposition to a health-savvy Dutch consumer. Green Chef will offer a variety of plans to cater to different lifestyles and dietary preferences, such as vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, flexitarian, lower carb and keto. All of Green Chef's recipes are created by a team of certified dieticians with a big focus on flavour, quality ingredients and variety to create inspiration for every dish. Their work will offer health conscious consumers greater convenience, and peace of mind while following their preferred diet.

Green Chef Netherlands offers six popular diets: keto, vegan, vegetarian, lower carb, flexitarian and pescatarian.

Having been active in the Netherlands for more than ten years, HelloFresh said it wasdetermined that it was missing out on a very attractive customer segment which cares deeply about their food and dietary choices and frequently cooks at home. Sticking to healthy eating goals can be seen as restrictive and even confusing, leaving people feeling overwhelmed and despondent, it said. Researching recipes, shopping, and reading labels to find the ideal ingredients takes a lot of time. That is why people either dont even try or quit, while trying to achieve their health goals. Green Chef is the perfect solution for these customers and the 35% of Dutch consumers who follow at least one nutrition rule in their daily life.

HelloFresh added this latest launch is consistent with its growth strategy. It announced: It will help cement the companys market dominance in the Dutch meal kit sector through appealing to an even wider pool of prospective customers and to reach those in the Netherlands who are currently not catered for through HelloFreshs current offering. It will also help HelloFresh to reach its ambition to scale its business significantly over the next few years.

A spokesperson added:We are very excited to bring Green Chef to the Netherlands following the brands success in the US and the UK. As a business, we remain in a period of high-growth, and it is essential that we are continually diversifying our offer to bring new and exciting choices to both our existing customer base and those who are yet to experience what meal kits have to offer.

To date, the health and diet conscious segment of the market, such as those following keto, lower carb or vegan diets, have been underserved by the food and drink industry. Thats why we are especially pleased to be launching Green Chef in the Netherlands, and which we are sure will bring greater convenience, peace of mind, and variety to these customers.

The move is also part of HelloFreshs plan to become world-leading food solutions group.

Its second-quarter results released last week revealed that while earnings dropped as expected in the inflation-mired period, the company's active customer base increased by 4.1% year-on-year to eight million in the second quarter, while the average order value increased by 11% year-on-year on a constant currency basis. "Our product offering continues to come at an attractive and competitive pricing and brings additional benefits to our customers, such as having fresh food delivered to their homes, reducing food waste and taking away the hassle of having to think about what to shop and cook, said HelloFresh CEO Dominik Richter.

The Keto Diet Is Losing Followers, Is Inflation to Blame? – The National Herald

Posted: August 25, 2022 at 2:05 am

The rift between the Democrats and Republicans is nothing compared to the chasm separating those on either side of the keto camp. But, love it or hate it, its undeniable that the ketogenic diet has left its mark on the minds and waistlines of the country.

According to data gathered from Google Trends, however, interest in the ketogenic diet has never been lower, dropping 94% since its peak in May 2018.

What is The Ketogenic Diet?

The ketogenic diet, or keto, is a diet that flips conventional wisdom on its head. Instead of eating low fat and restricting calories, keto proponents tell us to eat high fat until were full.

The limitation, however (theres always a restriction somewhere when dieting), is that you must restrict carbohydrate intake. Carbohydrates are in starchy foods like bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes. However, quitting starchy foods is not enough to stay in ketosis. Most people on the ketogenic diet consume no fruit, root vegetables, or other foodstuff containing carbs.

Most recommend that you stay under 20g of net carbs daily to stay in ketosis. For reference, a single apple is 25g.

The preferred macronutrients by calorie split for ketogenic dieters:

75% fat20% protein5% carbohydrateCan You Really Lose Weight Eating Bacon and Butter?

For the uninitiated, the ketogenic diet seems absurd. A slab of butter in my morning coffee, followed by eggs and bacon, will help me lose weight?

No matter how counterintuitive it may seem, the results speak for themselves. Peoples personal experiences fill every keto-related comment thread, and theyve lost vast amounts of fat eating fat. I decided to try it in 2018 and lost 20 lbs in the first six weeks. So theres no doubt that the ketogenic diet is effective now, but how does it work?

Ketones are the key. Ketones are an alternative fuel source the body can use if glucose (blood sugar) levels are low. Ketones are produced in the liver from fat cells. Once the body switches to this alternative energy source, its said to be in ketosis.

A person in ketosis is essentially running on fat, that may be dietary fat, from a fatty cut of meat, for example, or stored body fat. This is how ketogenic dieters can achieve such extraordinary feats of fat loss. The body becomes so well adapted to using fat for energy that it willingly consumes body fat 24 hours a day.

When Did Keto Become Popular?

The ketogenic diet has been a known medical treatment for epilepsy since the 1920s, but it wasnt until 2016 that it became a popular diet people used to lose weight.

As the diet began gaining traction in 2018, two influential celebrities further catapulted it into the mainstream: Kourtney Kardashian and Joe Rogan. Rogan published several keto-related podcasts in 2017 and 2018 with experts such as Dom DAgostino, Ph.D. Kardashian wrote a blog post on February 27, 2018, titled I Tried the Ketosis Diet.

Its no surprise that in New Year 2019, more people were Googling the keto diet. Since then, however, searches have only decreased, up ticking each January when everyone makes resolutions, but monthly searches have now fallen 94%.

What Killed Keto?

Most people Googling the keto diet were likely looking for a definition or quick summary to understand the diet. So its natural now that most people know what keto is, these types of searches would go down. So instead, a better metric to track people using the diet is a search term like keto lunch ideas, which is more likely to be Googled by people on keto.

For this term, since its peak in January 2019, its fallen 60%.

I spoke to industry expert Carine Claudepierre who runs Sweet as Honey, a website focused on low carb and keto diet recipes, and asked her if she was feeling the downturn.

I think were at the point where the keto diet isnt a new thing anymore; it doesnt have anything to prove, says Claudepierre.

Most people are already aware of the ketogenic diet. They no longer need a top-level definition or summary, but theres more behind the dramatic loss of interest.

Keto recipes also cost more as they rely on expensive ingredients such as almond flour and avocados that have increased in price massively, says Claudepierre.

Inflation levels hit 13.1% for groceries in August, and stores across the country see increases in many goods, making already expensive keto foods simply out of reach for the budgets of most Americans.

Can Keto Be Affordable?

The ketogenic diet doesnt need to be expensive, you can swap the pricey foods for cheaper ones, but your meals will likely be repetitive and a little less inspired. If thats something you can sacrifice, keto can be affordable. Fatty cuts of meat are often cheaper than their lean counterparts, and leafy greens dont need to cost much.

Look for goods on a keto shopping list that you could see yourself eating and wont break the bank.

So why not buck the trend and make keto one of your goals this year?

Does the Weight Stay Off?

If you continue doing the ketogenic diet, the fat will continue to fall from you, but does it stay off when you shift back to a more traditional diet?

Most find that if they return to their previous bad eating habits, the weight will return, but it doesnt have to be that way. The ketogenic diet is the perfect reset diet. So after the reset, you can potentially have a whole new life if you dont return to your bad eating habits. This was the draw of the ketogenic diet when it first gained popularity in 2018.

Now that the novelty has worn off, however, fewer people are willing to undertake the intense restrictions that the ketogenic diet demands. Claudepierre sees it this way. The keto diet is evolving from a restrictive, permanent diet to a more on-and-off diet. The frequent fluctuations in the data would seem to agree.

My own ketogenic journey continued for 18 months until covid hit in 2020. I became leaner than ever, and despite a lax diet throughout the pandemic, I only regained 10 lbs. So Im now restarting my ketogenic journey and documenting it on Face Dragons.

Should You Give it a Try?

If you feel like youve already tried everything else and are committed to losing weight, the ketogenic diet is an excellent proven method to lose weight fast. Its very restrictive, but it will give you the desired results without starving yourself or enrolling in a Bootcamp.

Keto flu is also a consideration. As the body goes through this change, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and low blood sugar can cause whats known as keto flu, flu-like symptoms in the initial adaptation phase. However, there are natural keto flu cures; the key is staying hydrated and keeping your electrolyte levels high.

If you try the keto diet, give it some time to work. It can take the body weeks to become fully fat adapted, so dont quit if you arent seeing results in a few days. And, of course, talk to a doctor before starting any kind of diet or lifestyle change.

Diabetes Diet: Foods And Tips To Improve Insulin Resistance – NDTV Food

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:11 am

Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas in response to food ingestion. Insulin resistance is described as a state when the energy from our food ingested and converted to glucose is not able to enter the cells of our muscles, liver and fat where they are converted to energy. The outcome of this is an increased sugar level in our blood and also an overworked pancreas. Causes for this are still being investigated, but genetic predisposition. Obesity, visceral obesity, food habits, lack of physical activity and some medications may lead to Insulin resistance. Short-term insulin resistance is not the problem but chronic hyperinsulinemia is dangerous for our health. It leads to obesity, increased triglycerides, hardening of arteries, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome including heart diseases, diabetes and PCOS.

Preventing and reversing Insulin resistance by eating the right food is simple and doable but needs discipline and consistency.

Glycaemic Index is a measure of the effect of food on blood sugar. Foods with a high GI need more insulin for their assimilation, on the other hand, foods with low or medium GI help reverse insulin resistance. Foods with a GI 0f more than 70 are best avoided, these include foods with a high amount of carbs but no fibre, and foods that contain sugars. Sweetened beverages, tinned fruits, white rice, white bread, potatoes, and breakfast cereals are some examples of high GI foods. These should be consumed the least, when unavoidable pair them with a high fiber, high protein food.

(Also Read:5 Low Glycemic Index Recipes For Healthy And Wholesome Meal)

Potato is an example of a high GI food.

Carbs are a very important part of a healthy diet. By choosing high fiber whole grains you add fibre, phytonutrient antioxidants, and medium to low GI foods, and they digest slowly keeping the energy levels up and avoiding most meal sugar spikes. All of these help control insulin resistance and also protect against heart diseases, diabetes and obesity. Carb counting can also be practised to control portion sizes.

Sugar in any form raises blood sugar and also has a detrimental effect on insulin resistance. Be it soft drinks, sweetened juices, mithais, iced teas, vitamin drinks, energy drinks, all contain sugar. Read the labels and look for hidden sugars like high fructose corn syrup, and artificial sweeteners to control the insulin spikes.

This is one important nutrient for controlling insulin resistance. Fill up half your plate with low-carb vegetables, in addition to fibre they add vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that protect against a host of health conditions. Whole grain fibre is particularly helpful for addressing insulin resistance. The insoluble fibre present in whole grains delays the release of carbs into the blood preventing spikes, it is very effective in controlling insulin resistance as a number of studies have shown. Add a whole, unprocessed grain to at least one meal a day. Barley is particularly effective for sugar control.

(Also Read:Carbohydrates and Diet: How Much Do You Really Need in a Day?)

Barley can be an effective way to control blood sugar spikes.

Healthy fats play a vital role in controlling Insulin resistance. Saturated and trans fatty acids have a negative effect on insulin. Choosing the right quality is more important than quantity. Infact, high-fat foods actually reduce sugar spikes. But please do not go overboard. Choose fats from seeds and nuts like almonds, walnuts and chia/ flaxseeds. Have a handful a day. Cooking oils should be rich in mono-unsaturated fats like peanut, olive and safflower oils. Mustard oil is also rich in healthy monounsaturated fats.

Proteins, the bane of Indian food habits, must be included in every meal. This effect the weight positively and helps maintain muscle mass rather than fat mass. Proteins add satiety to a meal. whole dals, and legumes add fiber and antioxidants, both of which protect the body. Proteins as snacks are a good option.

Include dairy products in your diabetes diet.

Dairy products are showing a positive effect on controlling blood sugars in recent studies. They add proteins, protective Vitamin D and calcium. Dairy fat contains trans-palmitoleic acid, which the researchers at Harvard School of Public health, have found to be very supportive in minimizing the risk of insulin resistance.

Apart from these particular foods, we must also follow certain other diet tips to improve insulin resistance.

All in all, insulin resistance can be controlled with mindful eating and a healthy lifestyle, but you need to do so every day and not once in a blue moon.

5 Healthy Brown Rice Recipes for Weight Loss Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: August 17, 2022 at 2:10 am

When it comes to the brown rice versus white rice debate, brown rice usually gets the win as the healthier grain. Brown rice is a grain full of helpful nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Not only that, but this grain can also help aid in weight loss management by keeping you more full during meals thanks to its fiber. With benefits like this, it seems like it's a good choice to start incorporating brown rice into your diet.

Although brown rice has some great benefits, continuously eating it plain sounds like a boring and tiring way to do so. Although the grain may taste good on its own, you can still mix it up into delicious and healthy recipes. Now, you'll enjoy a satisfying meal in many different ways, with the benefit of helping to lose weight. If you're not a chef in the kitchen and don't know what to make, we've got you covered. We spoke with The Nutrition Twins, Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT, and Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CDN, CFT, authors of The Nutrition Twins' Veggie Cure, to give you some healthy and tasty brown rice recipes for weight loss to incorporate into your weekly meals.

"If you feel like you can't lose weight eating carbs, this recipe is for you," says The Nutrition Twins.

This faux fried rice has less than half of the calories of many other fried rice dishes, coming in at only 126 calories per cup (versus the nearly 300-plus calories per cup in most fried rice dishes).

"This lightened-up carb is the perfect side to team up with your protein and veggies, or even to serve as a bed for them," says The Nutrition Twins. "It's packed with extra blood sugar-stabilizing fiber from the brown rice and veggies, (and even includes some protein). This will help prevent a quick rush of insulin that shuts down fat burning, and that makes many carb options the villain."

Furthermore, nutrient-loaded ingredients like ginger, kale, asparagus, and broccoli are packed into this recipe. Because of this, the Nutrition Twins suggest you'll get fewer calories per bite.

These ingredients "thin out" the calories and add potent antioxidants that boost immunity and fight inflammation, which, according to The Nutrition Twins, is a big deal.

"Chronic inflammation is linked to weight gain as well as more difficulty losing weight," they say.

This southern dish is good for the souland for weight loss!

This jambalaya is packed with two lean sources of filling protein: chicken breast and shrimp. It's also stuffed with fiber-rich, low-calorie vegetables like celery, peppers, tomatoes, and onions. Then you've got the satisfying whole grain brown rice, making for a jam-packed, nutrient-dense meal.

"This protein and veggie-packed Jambalaya has all the makings for a healthy, satisfying weight loss meal," says The Nutrition Twins. "To really step it up a notch, only use half or a quarter of the sausage," The Nutrition Twins suggest.

And although this particular recipe calls for white rice, The Nutrition Twins say be sure to use brown rice instead, since it's a "wholesome whole grain" with nutrients and fiber that research shows have beneficial effects on both abdominal fat and metabolic factors like insulin resistance and cholesterol. Meanwhile, fiber and many nutrients have been stripped out of the white rice.

"This healthy and delicious Chinese take-out-inspired meal has all the flavor of a restaurant meal, but unlike most Chinese take-out, it takes it easy on the waistline," says The Nutrition Twins.

This dish slashes the calories by more than half. The calories for a serving are about 300 calories, while most take-out dishes had about 600 calories or more.

Furthermore, making this recipe is super easy, meaning it can become your go-to, busy weeknight dinner.
