According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), one cup of regular black coffee brewed from ground beans contains two calories. A fluid ounce of rich black espresso, on the other hand, contains only one calorie. And, the number of calories in your coffee is reduced to zero if you use decaffeinated beans!

Another variety of coffee that has been making the rounds of the news for its weight loss benefits is green coffee. Green coffee beans are seeds of coffee fruits that are not roasted, unlike regular coffee. These coffee beans have a higher amount of chlorogenic acid which is believed to have numerous health benefits. According to Dr. Simran Saini from Fortis Hospital, "Chlorogenic acid in green coffee acts as an antioxidant. It helps in controlling high blood pressure; aids weight loss and maintain blood sugar levels in the body." That being said, many may still be confused about how to place coffee into their weight loss regime; and for that, we are here to help. Apart from eliminating milk and sugar in your coffee, here are some other ways you can use the drink that may help you lose those extra pounds.

Regular black coffee will be one of the easiest drinks for you to make on a daily basis. Just mix coffee powder and water and sip away. You can depend on black coffee not just for the mornings but any time of the day. If you consume black coffee after supper or dinner, the presence of chlorogenic acid slows down the production of glucose in the body. Moreover, the production of new fat cells is decreased, meaning lesser calories in the body.

Dr. Anju Sood, a renowned Bengaluru-based nutritionist, states. "Cinnamon increases one's metabolic rate which further helps in breaking the chain of fat storage in the body'. Add a tsp of cinnamon powder to your morning black coffee to increase its benefits.

Lemon juice is known to stimulate the metabolism rate of the body that greatly helps one shed extra kilos. It induces satiety and may also help in improving the digestive system. All you need to do is prepare a regular cup of black coffee with no sugar and milk and add the juice of a quarter part of lemon and stir. Sip away.

If had in moderation, green coffee can be a great addition to your weight loss diet. You can make ginger mint green coffee by mixing green coffee powder, ginger, mint leaves, and some chia seeds. Let this sit for a while before gulping it down.

Sheryl Salis, a registered dietician shares this recipe of green herbal tea which requires you to boil some water with whole spices like cinnamon and cardamom. Add tulsi, turmeric, and black pepper too. Now pour this boiled concoction into a cup and add green coffee powder and some lemon juice to it.

If youre trying to lose weight, youve likely done an overhaul of your diet. Whether youre doing a keto diet or intermittent fasting or made other changes, what you eat and drink plays a huge role in getting you to your goals. One drink thats become especially popular among people who want to lose weight is juice. But, whats the best way to use juices for weight loss? We've got answers for ya.

The main way I'd use juice with a client is to boost hydration, vitamins, and minerals in their diet, says Seattle-based registered nutritionist Ginger Hultin, RDN, owner of ChampagneNutrition and author of Anti-Inflammatory Diet Meal Prep and How to Eat to Beat Disease Cookbook. Juices can also be a great source of hydration and fiber, which makes it super filling, adds Amber Pankonin, RD, the owner of the food blog the Stirlist.

A juice fast is not be the best way to go, though. If youre only consuming juice, the initial weight loss you might see on the scale is due to water loss and you will quickly gain this back if you go back to eating the way you did before, says Pankonin. Instead, she recommends including juice within your calorie goal or diet and aim to lose one to two pounds per week.

Unfortunately, they don't. The body burns fat by using it for fuel, which often occurs when you work out more or eat the right kinds of foods on a regular, balanced schedule, Hultin says. So, simply drinking juice isn't going to burn fat.

However, she points out that drinking juices does have other perks like improving nutrition and blood pressure or other markers of health.

If youre buying a juice off the shelf, there are a few things you need to look out for. Store-bought juices can often be high in sugar and stripped of valuable nutrients like fiber and other phytochemicals, says Pankonin. Juices made at home are often higher in fiber and you can control the amount of any added sugars or alternative sweeteners that you use, she adds.

If you don't have time to make them yourself, Hutlin recommends looking for juices that are vegetable-basedthink green juices, tomato, and other veggie juices. These will generally be lower in calories, but still contain a lot of nutrients and hydration, she says.

How to handle the holidays when youre on a special diet – Fox 59

The holiday season can be challenging for those on a special diet. Whether you have to go gluten-free, are watching your sodium or counting carbs, sometimes it can be tough to enjoy a holiday treat.

Registered dietitian Kim Galeaz joined FOX59 Morning News with tips for guests and hosts for navigating holiday gatherings and specialized diets.

The following recipes were featured in this Living Well segment:

Pecan Streusel Filling

Coffee cake

Heat oven to 350F. Grease a 913-inch metal baking pan. In a small bowl, whisk together brown sugar, cinnamon and pecans until thoroughly blended. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer with paddle attachment, combine butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Mix on medium-high until smooth and creamy. Add half the flour mixture and half the sour cream, mixing until blended. Add remaining flour mixture and sour cream and mix just until blended. Spread one-half batter in greased pan. Sprinkle with one-half the streusel filling. Top with remaining half of batter (spread as close to edges as possible) and sprinkle with remaining half of streusel. Bake 40 45 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean in center. Cool on wire rack. Enjoy warm or at room temperature. Store leftovers at room temperature in tightly covered container and enjoy within 3 days for best quality. Makes at least 20 servings.

Drain canned sweet potatoes, reserving the sweet liquid. In a medium bowl, smash/mash drained canned sweet potatoes. Add mashed sweet potato, garbanzo beans, peanut butter, lemon juice, oil and garlic to a food processor. Process/pulse until almost smooth. Add salt, cumin, coriander, harissa spice and Harissa sauce. Process again until smooth. Add reserved liquid to make smoother hummus if desired. Taste and add more lemon, harissa or spices if desired. Serve with favorite vegetables, pita wedges, whole grain naan, whole-grain crackers and gluten-free crackers.

Makes about 3 cups hummus (about 10 servings of 1/3 cup each)

Heat oven to 350F. Coat two 1813-inch rimmed baking sheets with oil or cooking spray. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together brown sugar and all spices. Add walnuts, pecans, cashews and almonds and toss well. Drizzle vegetable oil over all nuts and stir/toss until thoroughly blended and all nuts are coated with spice mixture. Spread evenly in a single layer in prepared pans. Bake, stirring several times, about 15 to 20 minutes, until nuts are browned but not burned. Cool on wire racks. Enjoy immediately. Store leftovers in an airtight container or zippered plastic bag at room temperature. Enjoy within 4 5 days. Or freeze in zippered freezer bags. Theyll last up to one year in freezer.

Makes about 5 cups (roughly 16 servings of 1/3 cup each).

Combine cranberries, canned cranberry sauce, onions and celery leaves in food processor bowl. Process until combined. Add Worcestershire sauce, mustard, horseradish, ketchup, lemon juice, garlic powder and salt and process until just combined. Taste and adjust horseradish, lemon juice, mustard, garlic powder and salt as desired. Serve immediately with cooked chilled shrimp. Refrigerate leftover cranberry sauce in a tightly covered container and enjoy within 4 to 5 days.

Makes about 3 cups sauce.

Weight loss story: ‘I included traditional millets and proteins in my diet to lose 30 kilos’ – Times of India

My breakfast: Homemade regular south Indian breakfast like poha/jowar roti/ idli or dosa, along with one scoop of protein after my workout.

My lunch: Again regular south Indian fare, white rice, dal tadka etc, and one vegetable serving is a must.

My dinner: Jowar roti/ Chapati, veggies plus curd. Jowar roti/chapati/ veggies plus curd.

Pre-workout meal: Very rarely do I have something before my workout but if I need something to fuel, I have a banana or a cup of black coffee.

Post- workout meal: Whey isolate.

I indulge in (What you eat on your cheat days): Junk food basically- potato chips, ice cream or Bengali sweets! However, I ensure everything I consume is in limited quantity only.

Low-calorie recipes I swear by: Oatmeal recipes, which I like to include in my breakfast on days.

Some people may assume that in order to drink coffee in a healthy way, they have to drink it black without any cream or flavor. But this just isn't true.

"Cow's milk contains one gram of protein per ounce, and protein helps you get full faster and stay full longer, making it a great start to the morning," says Goodson, "and milk naturally has a lightly sweet and creamy taste, which makes a low-calorie coffee taste delicious."

She does suggest using milk that's lower in fat if you're going to add cream, as the calories can still add up quickly without you noticing.

Ultimately, one of the worst coffee mistakes people make when they're trying to lose weight is using too many sugary syrups or other forms of sweeteners with added sugar. (Read more:7 Things You Should Never Add to Your Coffee.)

For example, just one pump of the Pumpkin Spice syrup at Starbucks can have up to 10 grams of added sugar, and a grande PSL usually comes with four of these sugary pumps in just one drink! With the recommended daily limit of added sugar being around only 12 teaspoons, you can see how these sugary coffee drinks can add up.

Not only that but drinking these sugary calories without any fiber can have negative effects on your health. This is because fiber can help slow down your body's absorption of the sugar you consume, so when you drink a sugary coffee beverage with absolutely no fiber at all, your blood sugar levels may increase more rapidly.

This is why Goodson recommends skipping on the sugary syrups when you're trying to lose weight and using natural spices instead. "Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin spice, and cocoa powder are all calorie-free but provide a lot of flavor," says Goodson.
