Weight loss: The ‘junk foods’ you can eat ‘in small amounts’ even on a diet – Express

Posted: May 23, 2021 at 1:53 am

Supplement company Performance Lab has teamed up with the University of Leeds to conduct research on the best and most nutritious foods people should be eating to lead a healthy lifestyle and diet. Interestingly, the study also found the best junk foods, demonstrating that these less healthy foods are full of nutrients too, and can be eaten even when wanting to lose weight.

Some of these foods are potato crisps fried in sunflower oil, chicken fajitas, fried potato French fries, chicken nuggets, homemade beef burgers, and vegetarian pizzas.

These foods were once considered as junk foods, but it is possible to implement them into your diet if you dont eat too much or too many of them.

Dr Paul Rimmer, who works for Performance Lab, told Express.co.uk: Junk foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients, can be consumed in small amounts as part of a healthy diet.

However, this needs to be balanced with a diet that contains less refined/processed foods, that are high in vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients, have high food volume and that keep us feeling full from meals, healthy and energised.

Dr Rimmer added: Too much low nutrient quality, high calorie density food, is likely to make you feel sluggish and craving more all of which contributes to overconsumption of junk foods and contributes (with many other factors such as reduced activity) to the worrying trend of increasing rates of obesity and the health implications this can cause.

The study found that some junk foods contain barely any vitamins, therefore these are best avoided.

These foods include sweet and sour pork, doner kebab in pitta bread, chocolate cake, egg fried rice, and chocolate ice cream.

Some drinks that are not good for health or weight loss include fizzy sugary drinks and energy drinks.

However, Dr Rimmers colleague, qualified sports nutritionist Abigail Roberts, claimed that even if they contain no vitamins, junk foods can still be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.

She said: Junk food can make up a small part of a balanced diet, regardless of if they contain lots of vitamins.

This is providing the majority of your diet is sourced from whole, nutritious foods, which offer a much better-quality nutrient profile and would have a more significant positive impact on your health and wellbeing.

Abigail went on to explain what a balanced diet should consist of, saying that whole foods such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, grains, and greens are best.

Though, a small part of your diet can be made up of less-optimal foods, Abigail added.

Its important to moderate your intake of high fat, high sugar, calorie-dense foods, but they can and should be included if you enjoy them.

When it comes to weight loss, Abigal explained that you can eat anything you like, provided youre in a calorie deficit over a prolonged period of time.

The sports nutritionist even recommended snacking. She said: Snacking on healthy foods in between meals can offer many benefits, such as sustaining your energy levels throughout the day, increasing nutrient intake, and supporting recovery from exercise.

Good sources of protein and fiber make for great snacks and are typically nutrient-dense and filling options. Examples include yogurt, fruit, mixed nuts, raw vegetables and dips, and home-made breakfast bars, Abigail added.

Weight loss: Game of Thrones’ star drops an insane 110 lbs/50kg while eating almost 4,000 calories a day – T3

Posted: May 23, 2021 at 1:52 am

Although Hafr 'Thor' Bjrnsson, a.k.a. the Mountain from the fantasy TV-series Game of Thrones, shared his full day of eating and workout in a recent Youtube video, I doubt many people would be able to keep up with it. And like it wasn't enough that he looks pretty shredded for someone who eats almost 4,000 calories a day, he also lost a staggering 110 lbs/50 kg by keeping to said diet and a rigorous workout regimen.

Right now, Thor weighs around 341 lbs/155 kg and stands 6"9'/2 metres tall, putting him in the 'obese' BMI category, which is a good example of why BMI is only an approximate measure of health at best. The Mountain looks anything but obese: he has broad shoulders, big arms, wide pecs and that beautiful V-taper back. Not to mention, his ab-cuts are clearly visible.

He didn't always look this way though. As a strongman, Thor had a bodyweight of around 452 lbs/205 kg which is insane but then again, strongmen are generally huge and eat ridiculous amounts of food as well as lifting heavy, pretty much all the time. Thor's priorities are elsewhere nowadays so he includes more cardio workouts in his current workout regime, including sessions on air bikes and sparring with his trainer.

He still does resistance training, of course, but 'only' to maintain his physique as opposed to trying to get stronger. In the video, you can see him performing an upper body workout with his trainer and if you can't imagine just how huge this man is, just look at those 22.5 kg dumbbells in his hands: they look tiny.

Without further ado, let's take a look at the video and then we'll analyse his diet in further detail.

We watched and analysed this video and tallied up how many calories Thor eats a day to maintain his body composition. We also analysed the macros in his meals to have a clearer idea of how these calories are sourced. In total, the Mountain eats around 3,740 calories a day with the macro mix of 309 grams of protein (30%), 372 grams of carbs (39%) and 131 grams of fat (31%) a day.

He mentions a few key details in the video in terms of his diet and workout regime, such as that he eats the same food every day, drinks lots of fluids throughout the day and that he doesn't snack (on 'bad' food). He says he doesn't need snacks because his diet never really 'makes him hungry or full'.

As well as eating right, Thor also works out three times a day which includes a movement session, an endurance (cardio) session and a strength session when he works with weights. He also enjoys some sauna time later, followed by a 15-minute (!) ice bath.

We can't stress this enough but even if you like how Thor looks like now who wouldn't just by eating exactly the same was as he does won't get you in the same shape. This is a lot of calories, especially for people who live a sedentary lifestyle.

(Image credit: Hafr Jlus Bjrnsson (Youtube))

Approx. 800 kcal

Macro mix: 82g protein, 42 carbs, 36 fats

Thor really does start the day strong and eats ample amounts of fat and protein to energise his body in the morning. You won't find any breakfast staples here like cereals or toast, instead, Thor eats three eggs with 200 grams of chicken, followed by a shake of 150 grams of Greek yoghurt, 100 grams of berries and 40 grams of oats.

After his first meal, Thor gets his first and second workout of day out of the way, including sparring and a HIIT cardio training on an air bike.

(Image credit: Hafr Jlus Bjrnsson (Youtube))

Approx. 990 kcal

Macro-mix: 75g protein, 157 carbs, 16 fat

Thor's mid-morning snacks look slightly different from yours. While some people would opt in to have a protein bar or a light snack, the Icelandic Giant crams in almost a 1,000 calories in the form of 220 grams of tenderloin beef, 180 grams of good ol' white rice and 100 grams of greens, seemingly green beans. This is an absolute monster meal that's high in protein and carbs, the former aiding muscle protein synthesis and the latter boosting energy levels.

(Image credit: Hafr Jlus Bjrnsson (Youtube))

Approx 400 kcal

Macro-mix: 59g protein, 40g carbs, 3g fat

Admittedly his least favorite meal of the day, Thor's third repast consists of 200 grams of chicken, 250 grams of potatoes and 100 grams of greens. This is a straightforward muscle food-type 'snack', much lower in calories than his previous meal he had before his resistance workout.

In the video, Thor mentions that he isn't too find of poultry but it serves its purpose in his current diet. Chicken meat, especially chicken breast which he seems to be eating, is super lean and mainly contains protein.

(Image credit: Hafr Jlus Bjrnsson (Youtube))

Approx 860 kcal

Macro-mix: 53g protein, 89g carbs, 33g fat

Another big chow for Thor in the afternoon: another 100 grams of greens, 100 grams of rice and 220 grams of salmon. This meal contains some healthy fats in the form of the salmon, one of the best types of 'health food' you can eat. It goes without saying that you should choose salmon that was caught responsibly.

(Image credit: Hafr Jlus Bjrnsson (Youtube))

Approx 690 kcal

Macro-mix: 40g protein, 44g carbs, 43g fat

Thor's final meal is, as he puts it, a 'dessert', which at first looks like porridge but it's actually a combination of 250 grams of greek yoghurt, 30 grams of almond butter, and 100 grams bananas. He washes it all down with some whey protein. You know, just for good measure.

You can have weight gainer instead of protein powder if you need even more calories.

Ashley Graham on the pressure to lose weight by breastfeeding – Cosmopolitan UK

Posted: May 23, 2021 at 1:52 am

By now I think we all know that Ashley Graham can be relied on for keeping it real. The model has always candid about self-love, how her body changed throughout pregnancy and now, she's speaking openly about her postpartum experience. Ashley gave birth to the sweetest baby boy, Isaac, last January, who is her first child with husband, Justin Ervin.

As well as previously posting about the hair loss she noticed after having a baby, Ashley has now addressed a commonly held belief that breastfeeding will help new mothers to lose weight rapidly after giving birth. Something that Ashley says she personally found to be not the case, but that she's more than okay with (which serves as a nice reminder that there should never, ever be any pressure on new parents - or anyone - to look a certain way, let alone after going through something as major as giving birth).

"Everybody told me if you breastfeed, the weight falls off," she explained during a new interview with Parents. "Well, that was BS... I'm still working on like 20 pounds. When I say working on, I just kind of look at it every day like, 'Hello, new body.' And that's just kind of how I go on with it." Yes, Ashley!

As for whether or not it's true that breastfeeding can help you lose weight is true, the NHS website states, "If you are exclusively breastfeeding, this will help burn off about 300 calories a day" but adds that a healthy, balanced diet and exercise is always recommended for anybody who is looking to lose weight. Breastfeeding alone shouldn't be viewed as a tool for weight loss - and remember, everyone's body responds differently after giving birth too.

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

During the interview, Ashley, who has worked with the likes of Dolce and Gabbana, H&M and Tommy Hilfiger, also spoke once more about her postpartum hair loss and described it as "more traumatic" than actually giving birth.

"I think it was like around four months [when] my whole hairline fell out," Ashley said. "And that was more traumatic than even birth because I was like, 'My hair's falling out in clumps, what am I doing?' and then I realised it's actually a thing!"

And a thing it certainly is, reassures Ellie Coldham, a consultant trichologist at Philip Kingsley Trichological Clinic and it's nothing to worry about either. "Excessive hair shedding does not cause any permanent changes to the hair follicle," she told Cosmopolitan. "However, hair does grow slowly (approximately 1.25cm a month) so the results of re-growth will take some time to become obvious." Hair loss of this nature can be prompted by major stress, having a vitamin deficiency or the drop in oestrogen that follows giving birth.

Ashley added that her skin also changed after welcoming Isaac too, "My skin got a bit irritated as well, and I had a little bit of rosacea that I had to combat."

It's keeping up this level of honesty that the mother-of-one says helps her to feel good, as well as helping others. For Ashley, discussing all aspects of health - be it physical or mental - is just as important to her wellbeing routine as exercise is.

"I like to share every aspect of my life, I don't want to hide how I'm taking care of my body, whether it's mental health, stretching, movement," she said. "Even through pregnancy, I wanted other pregnant women to know it's OK to move your body as long as you've been doing it before you were pregnant for safety reasons."

Ashley added, "For me, moving my body is like a big form of self-care and mental health has really been such a big conversation that people have been having, especially all through 2020. I just have found it incredibly important for everybody to talk about their journey and what they've been doing because it helps people who are struggling."

Keep speaking out, Ashley - we're so here for it!

Here’s Terry Dubrow’s Hilarious Reaction to Paul Nassif’s Incredible Weight Loss – E! NEWS

Posted: May 23, 2021 at 1:52 am

There's nothing Botched about this body transformation.

Dr. Paul Nassif is on a health and weight loss journey and recently showed off his impressive progress on Instagram.

So how exactly is the E! star getting so fit and dropping those pesky extra pounds? We'll let him explain.

"The wholeintermittent fasting, which I'm doing now, Terry got me into that. I'm doing that 16 hours a day," the Botched star told E! News exclusively. "The working out I average about five days a week and it's a little bit of cardio, but it's more weight training and lifting. And the last part of it as we always say abs are made in the kitchen: it really is calorie restriction, what you take in versus what you put out and burn. I'm on a diet that's called Sunfare, they bring the food in, so calorie restriction and it's really healthy food. And tasty."

He added, "There's no dairy, no fats and things like that, no oils right now. It's just a clean, clean diet. And then of course you gotta splurge on the weekends at least one or two meals."

Surprising Exercises That Will Drive Your Weight Loss, Say Experts | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

When you combine the words "exercise" and "losing weight" in your mind, it may conjure images of people miserably slogging through rounds of burpees in pools of sweat like you'd see on TV shows like The Biggest Loser. And while hardcore exercises such as running, doing deadlifts, and performing HIIT exercises are all really great ways to burn fat and lose weight, you don't have to be going to the extreme with your regimen to lose a few pounds. In fact, there are plenty of great types of exercise that secretly masquerade as "fun" but are in reality excellent ways to lose weight. To know what they are, read on, because here are just a handful of them. And for more great workouts you should try now, don't miss The Secret Exercise Trick for Flatter Abs After 40.

Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, a Harvard-educated physician and obesity specialist, is a major proponent of jumping on a trampolinein fitness terms, also known as "rebounding"for helping lose weight, especially among obese people. "The trampoline is low impact on joints," she says. "Using a fitness trampoline can help for those that may have excess weight or may have joint issues associated with the excess weight. Also, it is quite a fun activity to engage in!"

According to NASA, jumping on a trampoline is more effective at building muscle masswhich helps you lose weightthan running. Further studies have found that rebounding is terrific for balance, helping with back pain, controlling your blood sugar, and helping you lose weight. And for more great workout advice, see why Science Says This Is the Single Best Abs Exercise You Can Do.

You probably know that rock climbing looks hard. You definitely know that it looks super cool. But until now you probably didn't associate this heavily upper-body activity with the words "weight loss." But it's true: You can climb your way to less pounds.

Though there's far more to it than this, rock climbing is at heart a strength-training exercise: You're constantly using your body's major muscle groups in the ways you would lift weights. More muscle growth means more calorie burn, and you'll burn a ton of calories while fighting your way up a rock face. You'll work your core, your arms, your glutes, and your back. "Rock climbing is an excellent way to drop a few pounds," says WebMD.

Also, have you noticed that all avid rock climbers are super skinny? Some of that is genetics, but some of that is because they climb rocks for fun. "Rock climbing is one of the most strenuous sporting activities you can do," writes Rock Climbing Central. "It requires you to use your hands and legs to pull and push your body up as you scale the heights."

If you're one of those people who still thinks yoga is just "stretching," you have so much to learn. In addition to all of the things great exercises dochiefly, burning calories and strengthening your musclesyoga will sync your mind and your body in ways that will ultimately help you shed pounds.

"Yoga creates a deeper awareness of your physical and mental state, linking the breath to the movement of the poses (asanas)," yoga teacher Alexandra Baldi explained to Women's Health UK. "This deeper awareness creates mindfulness and a greater intuition with your body, two key factors essential for weight loss; whether it's making healthier eating choices or knowing when to pull back to prevent too muchcortisolin the body, a serious detriment to weight loss."

Say what you will about the culture or the clothes, but if you walk and carry your bag, golf can be a tremendous workout that can help you lose weight. Recently, the folks at the UK-based website Skilled Golf took historical research data from Harvard University and combined it with other datasets they analyzed to reveal which of these more "leisure" sports are especially great at burning calories in a more real-world setting. By their calculation, if you were to walk a full 18 holes while carrying your own clubs, which usually takes roughly four hours, Skilled Golf estimates that an "average, healthy, and able-bodied person weighing approximately 155 lbs" would burn upwards of 1,640 calories.

If you're not sold, see how one woman lost 20 pounds playing golf.

Despite what you may have heard from any hardcore distance runners or weightlifters you happen to know, walkingwhen paired with a healthy dietis an effective way to lose weight. According to a study published in theJournal of Exercise Nutrition & Biochemistry, researchers who studied the effects of walking on obese women found that it was especially effective at reducing belly fat, while also improving the body's insulin response. Another study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, found that sedentary men and women between the ages of 40 and 65 managed to lose weight when they walked for 12 miles every week without meaningfully changing their diets. ‘The Mountain’ From ‘Game of Thrones’ Reveals Stunning 110 Pound Weight Loss – Maxim

Hafthor Bjornsson, best known as "The Mountain" from Game of Thrones, has also long been one of the strongest -- if not the strongest -- men in the world. In fact, he is the first person to ever win the Arnold [Schwarzenegger] Strongman Classic, Europe's Strongest Man and World's Strongest Man in a single year.

Even true strongmen eventually move on from the sport. Bjornsson recently showed off a 110-lb weight loss (451 lbs to 341) and announced he was retiring from Strongman competitions. Standing 6'9" Bjornsson is still probably one of the most dangerously mighty humans on the planet, but it seems like the huge Icelandic actor is looking at his health differently. Following in the newly slimmed-down footsteps of rapper and TV chef Action Bronson and actor-turned-fitness influencer Ethan Suplee, The Mountain is taking fitness seriously.

He also likely got damn tired of eating all the time, a requirement for strongman competitors in active training. Bjornsson, as he mentioned in the caption above, did indeed post an 18-minute video detailing his day on Youtube, and even on a diet he's eating enough for two normal-sized (5'10" - 6'0") men at every meal. It's just that he used to eat for five.

Still, even if Bjornsson's massive breakfast -- which includes lots of eggs and what looks like a jug of yogurt -- might make another man want to lay down for a nap, he has clearly gained a lot of energy and speed, looking surprisingly light on his feet in the video above.

HBO

While Bjornsson's video and his success are inspiring, it's easy to forget that his career is absolutely locked up in his fitness and appearance so he is essentially doing his job. Most people can't do three gym sessions a day or afford nutritionist assistance in meal prep. Also, his size makes it easy to forget that at 32, he's still a young man.

Unless you're 7'0" and 500 lbs, The Mountain probably isn't a good role model for how to take off weight and gain definition.

However entertaining it might be to watch Bjornsson go through his day (and between his affable personality and appealing family it really is a fun video) when it comes to fitness and weight loss, everyone's mileage varies.

The #1 Food to Avoid to Lose Weight, According to a Dietitian – Eat This, Not That

Posted: May 23, 2021 at 1:52 am

With summer fast approaching and the craziness of Covid-19 behind us (at least for a little while), it would be an understatement to say that we're excited to get out of the house and reconnect with friends and family like the good old days. But if you're like many Americans and hopped on the sourdough, banana bread, and whipped coffee pandemic food trends, you may have noticed that you've put on a couple more pounds than you have in previous yearsno big deal.

To start trimming back some fat, get outside! Walking for weight loss is highly effective, and it'll be nice to get out of the house and breathe in some fresh air. Additionally, you should consider cutting back on some of the less-than-healthy foods that likely contributed to some of your weight gain over the last year. We're not saying you need to overhaul your diet completely. Rather, you can focus on avoiding just one food that science has closely linked to weight gain: potato chips. (Related:Ugly Side Effects of Eating Potato Chips, According to Science.)

They may be delicious, but potato chips are regular culprits when it comes to gaining weight. In fact, one New England Journal of Medicine study found that potato chips were the number one food most closely linked to weight gain over a four-year period.

The Harvard researchers who conducted the study tracked the weight of over 120,000 participants over the course of four years.

On average, participants gained 3.35 pounds during this timeframe, and that four-year weight change was most strongly associated with the intake of potato chips, which they say accounted for 1.69 of those additional pounds.

It doesn't come as a surprise that a deep-fried snack food can cause weight gain:

"Like many snack foods, potato chips can be very caloric, especially if people are eating large portions of these crunchy snacks frequently," says Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, LD, founder of Nutrition Now Counseling and author ofFueling Male Fertility.

Manaker notes that the fact that potato chips are calorie-dense isn't the only reason this snack food is linked to weight gain; it's also that most people tend to eat more than one portion.

"One serving of potato chips is equivalent to one ounce of chips, or 18 chips. As a registered dietitian, rarely have I seen people limit their chip snacking to only 18 chipsespecially if they have a family-sized bag sitting on their lap. Potato chips are an easy food to eat mindlessly, which can contribute to weight gain," she says.

And if you're pairing these chips with dip, that could further accelerate your weight gain.

"And if the chips are being used as a vessel for dips, know that many dips can be very caloric as well, and can contribute to weight gain," says Manaker.

If you give up potato chips for weight loss, there are plenty of healthy alternatives you can replace this crunchy snack with.

"Kale chips, chickpea chips, and even chicken chips can offer up a satisfying crunch with extra nutrition, too," says Manaker. (For more ideas, check out these10 Weight Loss Snacks That Actually Satisfy, Recommended By Dietitians.)

If you're not ready to go cold turkey on potato chips, Manaker says that's ok considering that "potatoes are a natural source of nutrients and can be a part of a healthy diet." She recommends the following:

"Portioning out one serving at snacktime and sticking to that amount can help manage weight goals," she says, adding that "choosing baked potato chips can also be a nice alternative to fried choices." Or try these11 Best Brand Name Chips for Weight Loss.

‘I Used Calorie Counting And Powerlifting To Lose 90 Pounds In Just Over A Year’ – Women’s Health

Posted: May 23, 2021 at 1:52 am

My name is Rachel Faye Robbins (@rachelfayeak), and Im 27 years old. Im from Anchorage, Alaska, and Im the owner of Perfectly Imperfect Photography. I struggled with binge eating until I started taking care of myself by counting calories, practicing portion control, and powerlifting.

My binge eating was my biggest struggle with food and weight growing up. I fought with it since my preteen years, and it really took over in a serious way after I had kids.

I was 26 when I reached 267 pounds. At that weight I was constantly dealing with lower back pain and high blood pressure complications. Worst of all, I wasn't loving the woman I saw in the mirror.

But my turning point didn't come until after I left my marriage in November 2019. I began the process of rebuilding a home for myself and my two boys. In learning how to parent alone, I decided that I deserved so much more than the low standards I had in the past. And most of all, my boys needed a strong and stable mom.

It took a lot for me to deal with my demons and face the fears I had been pushing down for so long. But Im so glad I did, because my life has changed in the most amazing way.

Now Im a powerlifting gold medalist, business owner and someone my kids can be proud of. Just take that first step, and I promise you will end up somewhere amazing.
