Physical activity wards off dementia in older adults
From Portugal - Regular physical activity can help ward off dementia in older people, according to a report published in Stroke. Studying nearly 700 people in their 60s and 70s, researchers found that those who engaged in regular physical activity had a 40% reduced risk of dementia and a 60% reduced risk of any form of cognitive impairment. From Baltimore - Adding fruits and vegetables to the diet of kidney disease patients can improve their health, according to a report presented at the American Society of Nephrology #39;s annual meeting. Researchers randomized over 100 CKD patients to receive fruits and vegetables in their diet, an oral alkaline medication, or nothing at all. Results showed that individuals eating fruits and vegetables had reduced acidosis as well as preserved kidney function. From Greece - A new report published in PLOS ONE finds that social drinkers may have increased brain activity while resting. Researchers studied resting brain activity in healthy social drinkers, after they had one alcoholic drink.
