To Lose Weight, Train the Brain

Its easy to quit smoking, Mark Twain supposedly said. Ive done it hundreds of times.

Something similar could be said of losing weight: Its relatively easy to drop a few pounds, but keeping them off is much trickier. That explains why so many people fall into the classic pattern of yo-yo dieting, in which they lose weight, gain it back, lose it again, and so on.

A new study from researchers at Stanford University may point the way toward breaking out of this cycle. Weight loss might be more lasting, the study suggests, if dieters get the hang of certain healthy habitssuch as eating mindfully and taking brief walksbefore actively trying to lose weight.

The study, which appears in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, included 267 mostly obese women who were randomly split into two groups. Half of the women began a weight-loss regimen immediately. The other half eventually followed the same regimen, but first went through an eight-week program in which they fine-tuned their lifestyle and learned to stabilize their weight.

Both groups of women ultimately slimmed down by the same amountroughly 17 pounds, on average (or 9% of their initial body weight). But over the course of the following year, the women who participated in the eight-week program regained an average of just 3 pounds, compared to 7 pounds in the other group.

They cut that regain in half, says lead author Michaela Kiernan, a senior research scientist at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, in Palo Alto, Calif.

The dieting portion of the study lasted 20 weeks and featured all of the hallmarks of conventional weight-loss programs. Women met weekly with a trained instructor, kept food journals, exercised more, and followed a healthy diet focused on fruits and vegetables.

New Studies Reveal More Weight Lost with an hCG Weight Loss Diet than with Sensa.

Posted: November 1, 2012 at 2:09 am

A comparison of studies reveals more weight lost with a prescription hCG diet than a sensory based diet. The fast weight loss provided by a prescription hCG diet relies on physician monitored hCG treatments and a highly regimented and nutritious diet plan.

Anchorage, AK (PRWEB) October 31, 2012

What is Sensa? How much weight loss do studies show it provides?

The premise of the new Sensa diet is to curb appetite by applying stimulus to a person's sense, mainly smell and taste. Users are instructed to sprinkle Sensa products on food, wear aroma patches on their bodies, and even sniff Sensa SlimScents before meals in order to experience the appetite-curbing effects. The creator of Sensa conducted studies that show the Sensa weight loss system capable of producing weight loss of an average of 5.6 pounds over 6 months. The control group gained 1.1 pounds average over 6 months, concluding that Sensa produced an average overall improvement over the test group of -6.7 pounds over 6 months.

How much weight loss has a prescription hCG weight loss diet been shown to produce?

Contrastingly, the hCG weight loss diet has been observed to produce weight loss at an average of 1 pound-per-day. In addition to the hCG diet's original creator, Dr. A. Simeons, studies have been shown to substantiate the weight loss claims of a prescription hCG diet. Dr. Harry Gusman referred in his study of the hCG weight loss diet as "the most productive and safe approach to the best weight loss."

These figures render the hCG weight loss diet 27 times more efficient at producing fast weight loss than the Sensa weight loss program. Nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky for the Mayo Clinic weighs in on SlimScents and the Aroma Patch stating that "The makers of Aroma Patch and SlimScents point to another study by Dr. Hirsh to bolster their claims. That study, which was reported in a medical journal, showed that volunteers who used an aroma inhaler lost an average of 2% of their body weight over six months." With nominal weight loss produced by the Sensa weight loss system, it seems that the best non-surgical weight loss is still found with an hCG diet.

How is hCG more efficient for weight loss?

In response to the above findings, hCGTreatments / Diet Doc hCG Diets & Weight Loss Plans announces an improved hCG weight loss diet, clinically proven to produce average weight loss of a 30 pounds in 30 days, without scents, exercise, or patches. hCG triggers the hypothalamus to signal fat cells to give up their excess fat stores. But not only does hCG allow the body to release fat in trouble areas like underarms, hips, thighs, and midsection, hCG also ensures that the body does not burn muscle mass or structural fat during weight loss. Diet Doc Weight Loss will individually tailor a custom hCG weight loss diet to each client, by offering prescription hCG supplements coupled with a low calorie diet (up to 1250 calories daily). The effect is truly astounding. The hCG diet curbs appetite, preserves muscle mass, and sheds unsightly body fat at an amazing rate.

Diet Doc Weight Loss reminds consumers that hCG is a proven safe and healthy fast weight loss diet medication that has over 50 years of clearly documented results. Initially discovered by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons in the 1950's, the hCG diet has been proven safe for nearly everyone, and has a longstanding track record of producing fast weight loss safely and effectively. hCGTreatments / Diet Doc Weight Loss has vastly improved on the hCG diet and now offer a range of products and services to compliment and facilitate fast weight loss. While on hCG, dieters lose an average of one pound-per-day of stubborn body fat, safely and reliably. Medical Director for Diet Doc Weight Loss Plans, Dr. Nishant Rao adds, We use a ketogenic diet that is considered to be a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, similar to what athletes use. We found this to be the healthiest and most effective diet to use for fast weight loss results."

Dunedin Weight Loss Patients Find Optimal Results at Raveling Chiropractic Center

Posted: November 1, 2012 at 2:09 am

DUNEDIN, Fla., Oct. 28, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A Florida chiropractic clinic has committed itself to helping people lose weight safely and effectively. According to Dr. Paul Raveling of Raveling Chiropractic Center, P.A., the personalized weight loss plans offered by the clinic help overweight individuals adopt dietary and lifestyle changes that can help them lose up to 7 pounds per week. "Achieving a healthy weight is more than starving yourself or simply cutting out certain foods," says Dr. Raveling. "Our diet plan helps you reprogram your metabolism for long-term results without the fatigue or malnutrition caused by many crash diets."

Overweight people commonly seek to shed extra pounds when they become unhappy with their looks or wish to fit into particular clothes. But excess weight causes more than just self-consciousness, according to Dr. Raveling -- it can also cause or aggravate serious chronic health problems. "Obesity has been associated with high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, joint deterioration and even certain cancers," he notes. "By contrast, proper weight management can reverse or prevent many of these problems."

The chiropractor explains that one of the reasons so many dieters fail in their quest to lose weight is the overly restrictive nature of the diets themselves. "While many people assume they can lose weight simply by eating as little as possible, this behavior actually puts the body into starvation mode, slowing the metabolism," he says. He adds that the lack of nutrition caused by such a diet plan can also cause fatigue and listlessness among other issues: "Crash diets can deprive your body of the materials necessary to rebuild tissues and perform its essential daily functions," he says.

The programs offered by Raveling Chiropractic Center emphasize lifestyle changes as well as dietary changes to help patients lose weight efficiently but also safely. "Our diet plan is based on each patient's individual needs, body type and baseline health," says Dr. Raveling. "We prescribe foods that provide sufficient nutrition and energy to keep the metabolism burning calories at the desired level," he explains. "The principal means of losing weight is to burn more fuel than you consume, so we balance your food intake and your activity levels to reset your metabolism." He claims that his patients lose an average of .5 to 1 pound per day, for a potential loss of up to 7 pounds for each week a patient remains on the program.

Once the program participants have arrived at their goal weight, Dr. Raveling and his team continue to offer nutrition and lifestyle counseling to help them stay slim and well. "Healthy weight is part of a healthy overall life, and that's what we truly want for our patients," he says.

In addition to its Dunedin weight loss programs, Raveling Chiropractic Center also provides spinal adjustments, massage therapy, physical therapy and rehabilitation for patients in Palm Harbor, Clearwater and Tampa.

Canton Chiropractor Promotes ChiroThin Medical Weight Loss Program

Posted: November 1, 2012 at 2:09 am

CANTON, Ohio, Oct. 28, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Canton chiropractor Dr. Nathan Sikora and chiropractor Dr. Michael James, announced that the Center for Holistic Medicine now offers the ChiroThin weight loss program. The program is designed to help patients lose weight through dietary/behavioral modification, and a natural supplement to increase metabolism for fast weight loss. According to the chiropractors, this weight loss program is effective because it helps patients make long-term lifestyle changes without starving their bodies. There are no special diets, exercise regimens, nutritional shakes or expensive diet food.

The Center for Holistic Medicine, a chiropractic and whole person wellness center, is now offering patients the ChiroThin medical weight loss program.

"The ChiroThin program is truly a breakthrough for successful medical weight loss," said Canton chiropractor Dr. Nathan Sikora. "In just six weeks, this program can help patients lose weight quickly, without any complicated diets, expensive diet food, or unappetizing nutritional shakes."

The ChiroThin program incorporates long-term lifestyle modifications with the ChiroThin supplement. The physician-created formula is designed to boost metabolism while suppressing hunger cravings and detoxifying the body. The odorless, tasteless drops are placed beneath the tongue, where it is quickly absorbed into the body.

"Over time, a diet of processed foods can fill our bodies with toxins that block metabolism and cause illness," said chiropractor Dr. James. "The ChiroThin supplement supports natural detox and purification, removing toxins that contribute to illness and weight gain."

According to the chiropractors, the program is successful because it does not starve a patient's body or require unrealistic and difficult diets.

"Other weight loss programs fail because they starve the body, depriving it of vital nutrients," said Dr. James. "While food deprivation can lead to weight loss, it also kills the metabolism. As soon as individuals return to their normal eating habits, they immediately gain weight. The ChiroThin supplement prevents this from happening. It supports a healthy metabolism while naturally suppressing hunger and food cravings."

The chiropractor says that patients using ChiroThin experience rapid, healthy weight loss without mood swings, irritability or hunger cravings. The wellness program also includes nutritional and behavioral counseling, to help patients identify and correct unhealthy patterns of eating. A full body detox prepares patients to live a healthier, more active life at their ideal weight.

"In 42 days, female patients lose between two to three dress sizes," said Dr. Sikora. "Male patients typically lose between 25 and 35 pounds. These results are most impressive because they last. Thanks to our nutrition and behavioral counseling, patients are able to successfully make lifestyle changes that support their weight loss."

In addition to offering the ChiroThin weight loss and detox program, the Canton chiropractors also provide comprehensive wellness care. These services include chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy, physical rehabilitation, yoga and Pilates.

Weight Loss Surgery Might Not Provide a Return on Investment for Healthcare Costs

Posted: November 1, 2012 at 2:09 am

New research calls into question whether weight loss surgery reduces healthcare costs for patients three years after the procedure. LAP-BAND VIP Surgeon Dr. Shahram Salimitari said regardless of whether patients save money on healthcare, the focus is on improving their obesity-related health complications, such as diabetes or sleep apnea.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 30, 2012

The study, published in the July issue of the Archives of Surgery journal, found that a group of bariatric surgery patients all had health improvements in the short term. However, without making lifestyle modifications, such as proper diet and exercise, their risk for continued health problems remained high. The researchers noted that the study participants were mostly male, older, and sicker than most bariatric surgery patients, which may be why their healthcare costs were not reduced after surgery. Lead researcher Matthew Maciejewski said it is possible that if the patients had been followed for a longer period, their healthcare costs could have been reduced.

Whether or not bariatric surgery is effective in reducing healthcare costs, the focus should be on improving the patients health, said Dr. Salimitari. Losing weight and maintaining it is largely dependent on the effort of the patient, he emphasized, otherwise obesity-related health complications will return.

At LAP-BAND VIP, we aim to assist patients in losing weight so they can have a healthier life free from obesity-related complications, such as type 2 diabetes or sleep apnea, not to mention an increased self-esteem and a better quality of life, said Dr. Salimitari. Patients shouldnt be focused on seeing a return on their investment for any medical procedure.

A second study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis published in the July edition of Maturitas had the opposite conclusion. Their findings indicated that bariatric surgery is a cost-effective procedure for the majority of obese patients. The research team analyzed data from 170 studies and looked at the effectiveness of bariatric surgery according to weight loss, quality of life, and medical cost information. Their findings suggested that patients who have bariatric surgery are more likely to maintain weight in the long-term and have fewer weight-related medical problems. Although they acknowledged that the cost of weight loss surgery is much more expensive than dieting and exercise, they reported that it results in less money spent on obesity-related complications in the long run.

Patients have different reasons why they choose weight loss surgery, but a 2012 survey conducted by Arizona State University researchers made a list of the top motivators for surgery, such as reducing health problems and to boost self-esteem.

Bariatric surgery is performed on patients who are severely obese, or about 100 pounds or more over their ideal weight. Potential candidates are selected by meeting criteria, such as having tried to lose weight unsuccessfully through traditional means and their likelihood to comply with their physicians instructions for pre- and post-operative lifestyle modifications. Several methods of bariatric surgery are common, such as gastric bypass, LAP-BAND, or sleeve gastrectomy.

Dr. Shahram Salimitari obtained a medical degree from the Chicago Medical School and undertook his General Surgery residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago. He continued his training with a fellowship in minimally-invasive surgery at the University of South Florida. He specializes in weight loss surgery with a focus in gastric banding procedures.

Hydroxycut(TM): Weight Loss Is More Than Just Exercise

Posted: November 1, 2012 at 2:09 am

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Oct 25, 2012) - Weight loss is a topic that has garnered the attention of much of the nation, as many people are beginning to incorporate healthier activities and diets into their lifestyles in response to the highly sedentary culture that has evolved in the United States. As such, the discussion questioning how much is too much regarding diet and exercise has proven relevant in many ways. Hydroxycut, the number one best-selling weight loss supplement brand in the country, shares an article from CNN that cites moderation as a good rule of thumb.

According to the article, "As with so many other things in life, exercise may work best if you follow the Goldilocks rule: exercise neither too little nor too much, if your goal is to shed extra weight, a new study finds." This study, conducted by Danish researchers, asserts that exercising too much can actually result in less weight lost. The authors of the study have developed several theories regarding this surprising find.

One theory is that participants ate more calories in an effort to compensate for the additional exercise in which they engaged. Additionally, those participants who lost less weight despite working out more were less active during the rest of their day. As a result, they did not burn as many calories over the course of their average routine.

"Overall, Rosenkilde [lead researcher on the study] concluded, people who exercise less may end up burning just enough calories to lose weight, but not enough to feel compelled to replace them, either by eating more or remaining sedentary otherwise," claims the article.

"A healthy approach to weight loss is one that considers both diet and exercise -- and engages both in moderation. As the article notes, individuals who exercise too much may find that they eat more to compensate for the calories that they have lost, or that they are sluggish or tired throughout the rest of their day and, because they become more sedentary, miss out on burning the calories that they would have naturally. At Hydroxycut, we encourage adults to create weight loss plans that are tailored to their needs and to their goals. As such, it's important for them to determine how much exercise allows them to shed unwanted pounds without negatively impacting other aspects of their daily life," comments the company in a recent press statement.

Mothers' Weight-Loss Surgery Linked to Kids' Heart Health

Latest Diet & Weight Management News

MONDAY, Oct. 29 (HealthDay News) -- Children born to mothers who have had weight-loss surgery and lost a large amount of weight may have better heart health than their brothers or sisters who were born before their mothers lost the excess weight, a new study suggests.

This is likely because the weight loss and metabolic changes experienced by women after weight-loss surgery have a positive effect on inflammatory-disease-related genes in their children, said researchers from Laval University in Quebec City, Canada.

The researchers analyzed DNA in blood samples from 50 children born to 20 mothers; half the children were born before the mothers had weight-loss surgery and half were born after. The children ranged in age from 2 to 24 years when the blood samples were taken.

The mothers' average body-mass index (a measure of body fat based on height and weight) was 45 before weight-loss surgery and 27 after the surgery. A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

The DNA analysis revealed that the mother's weight at the time of birth influences whether certain genes are switched on or off in their children, which affects the children's future risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease.

The study was scheduled to be presented Monday at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, which is co-hosted by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

"We know our genetic makeup influences our children's risks -- but so can our environment," foundation spokeswoman Dr. Beth Abramson said in a news release.

"For example, if a disease runs in a family, we know to watch out for it in the children as they age," Abramson said. "This study shows that external factors also influence our risk for heart disease -- and that of our offspring -- by switching genes on or off in our DNA, providing a glimpse as to why this occurs. This is why lifestyle behaviors are so important."

The findings are another reminder about whey people need to manage and control their weight at all stages of life, she added.
