Bariatric Surgeons in Houston on Benefits of Band Revision Surgery

Posted: September 12, 2012 at 3:16 pm

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - Sep 12, 2012) - At their Houston weight loss surgery practice, Dr. Sherman Yu and Dr. Terry Scarborough say band revision procedures have risen in demand amongst patients who are looking for further results in their weight loss journey or seeking to address complications that may have occurred during a previous procedure. While less than one percent of the 15 million clinically-eligible morbidly obese people in the United States undergo a bariatric procedure, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) states that a weight loss operation may improve life expectancy by as much as 89%. Although initial bariatric procedures have been proven to provide effective results, Drs. Yu and Scarborough say undergoing a revision weight loss surgery procedure to correct any previously unmet concerns is an increasingly popular and effective way for patients to achieve a healthier life and a more enhanced outcome.

At their practice, Texas Laparoscopic Consultants, the Houston weight loss surgeons focus on a wide range of procedures designed to help give patients options to reduce the burdens of obesity and get back on track towards a healthy weight, offering treatments such as gastric bypass, gastric banding, and the gastric sleeve or sleeve gastrectomy. When it comes to revision procedures, Drs. Yu and Scarborough say patients often associate the need for a revision secondary treatment with some mistake that has been made; however, the reality is that there may be several reasons why another operation may be beneficial for patients. They say the most important thing to remember is that while weight loss surgery can provide remarkable results, it is not an immediate fix and patients need to understand that the procedures are a serious commitment, requiring drastic lifestyle changes and an open mind. "To help ease anxiety, patients should seek experienced weight loss surgeons who do revisional surgeries and provide the full spectrum of bariatric procedures so that the surgery can be custom-tailored to the patient," says Dr. Yu.

When undergoing a procedure such as the LAP-BAND Surgery or the gastric sleeve, Drs. Yu and Scarborough say the most common reason for needing a secondary treatment is often a result of the first procedure not being a right fit for the patient. Because each patient has different needs, they say finding the right course of action requires extensive experience and a highly individualized approach. Dr. Yu says patients who are in need of a LAP-BAND revision or second procedure often complain of failed weight loss, difficulty swallowing, heartburn, limited dietary choices, weight loss plateau, or mechanical failure. He says although these symptoms can occur, they are rare and can typically be resolved through revision weight loss surgery:

"Surgeries such as gastric sleeve, gastric bypass or duodenal switch affect patients' hormones that control appetite (such as Ghrelin) or GLP-1, which influences insulin production and sensitivity. That's why they can be more effective in treating co-morbidities that still exist in patients even after weight loss from a gastric band, as band surgery doesn't affect these hormones and can actually increase the body's production of Ghrelin."

As one of the most successful procedures performed at Texas Laparoscopic Consultants, Drs. Yu and Scarborough say secondary bariatric surgery can be an effective solution to patient dissatisfaction with their initial procedure, when performed by an experienced and qualified weight loss surgeon. They stress the importance of consulting with a passionate and qualified practice before undergoing any type of treatment, in order to ensure the safest and highest quality results are achieved.

Diet Doc Announces New Line of Gluten-Free, Low-Glycemic Diet Foods that Compliment their Modified hCG Weight Loss …

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) September 11, 2012

Diet Doc announces a new line of gluten-free, low-glycemic diet foods that compliment their modified hCG weight loss diet program.

Diet Doc offers a new line of gluten-free diet foods that are low on the glycemic index chart as well as offering patients a more convenient approach when following the ketogenic diet at Diet Doc. According to an in-house survey of over 32,000 patients, Diet Doc's ketogenic diet results in faster weight loss than previous diets.

Diet Doc is now offering a new line of diet foods to complement their hCG weight loss program. This offering comes in response to the high demand of their program and found that creating their own diet foods will give their patients more food variety as well as convenience. Following a customized and medically-supervised ketogenic diet plan, patients are given a restricted yet varietal list of lean proteins, fruits and vegetables. The list of foods can be combined using a number of healthy diet recipes found in their hCG diet cookbook. Healthy fats like MCT oil, derived from the coconut, are strongly recommended as the main source of fat for cooking because it is easily digested and metabolized for energy than other types of fat. The majority of the diet recipes in our hCG cookbook are really simple to make but our pre-made diet foods were really made for convenience. Lets face it, its hard for most people to manage their time, especially those with a job and a family to take of, say Julie Wright, Founder and CEO of Diet Doc.

Diet Docs hCG weight loss program is a modified version of the original hCG diet that was created in the 1950s by Dr. Simeons. The diet plan, explained in Simeons book Pounds and Inches, was an overnight success due to its effectiveness in creating fast weight loss results in those who tried the program. However, critics were quick to attribute the weight loss only to the daily intake of only 500 calories, citing it as dangerously low. Diet Doc has since modified their diet plan to make it healthy and more manageable. Their addition of almost double the amount of daily calories as well as adding more foods to the diet plan made their version of this half-century old weight loss program a success. They also found that the hCG hormone injections played a key role in the overall weight loss by resetting the hypothalamus, which is a part of the brain that regulates hormone function as well as regulating appetite, among other things. A combination of hCG treatments with a ketogenic diet will put the body into a state of ketosis, where the body uses stored fat as a source of energy, producing fast weight loss results. This naturally occurring process of ketosis is not normal among people that are especially overweight due to poor diet and lack of exercise which prevents the body from functioning normally.

Diet Docs addition of gluten-free, low-glycemic diet foods are also designed to help patients deal with emotion-driven eating habits. This hard-to-break habit puts people in a situation of eating bad foods that can also be associated with comfort. Diet Docs foods can satisfy these cravings but in a healthy way, using healthy ingredients. Theyve created a line of dessert bars with flavors like carrot cake and chocolate banana that also contain some organic ingredients. Protein shakes, dressings, marinades, noodles and soups are also offered and can easily be converted into meals or as snacks. Because our diet food is low-glycemic and mostly gluten-free, even people with a number of health conditions, like diabetes for example, can benefit from it. We chose products that can be enjoyed by anyone, weather they are on our diet or just want to maintain good health, says Wright.

'Weight-loss procedures lack standardization and proficiency'

Posted: September 12, 2012 at 3:13 am

Calcutta News.Net Tuesday 11th September, 2012

None of the weight-loss solutions currently available in the country are functioning on any reliable logical science, leading to short term weight loss and several linked complications, experts said at the "National Conference on Tackling Nutritional Challenges Among the diabetic Young".

"Lately, centres selling weight-loss in kilos and companies offering weight loss pills and drinks have cropped up as quick-fix solution. Most of them lack a holistic and customized approach, leading to various related health problems," said Manjari Chandra, senior nutritionist from Nutritionistsrepublic.com after attending the discussion, organised by Anna Adarsh Women's College, Chennai and Panacea Health Education.

The cases discussed were of unsuccessful weight-loss attempts. All three cases basically revolved around the malpractices and unscientific approaches found quite often in presently available methods of weight loss.

The first case discussed was of 27-year-old banker, who joined a weight-loss centre but could not achieve weight-loss even after trying almost everything they offered over a period of two years.

The second case was of 36-year-old lecturer having hypothyroidism; she tried a 'blood group diet' but soon regained all the weight after leaving the programme.

The third case was of 24-year-old girl who wanted to lose weight because of family pressure. She tried stand alone products and rather than losing weight, suffered badly from its side-effects.

From irrational diet plans to unscientific methods like body massages and appliance sessions, and from stand-alone weight loss products to the single-point half-baked approaches; the cases discussed, covered almost every difficulty one might face in the course of weight loss in the country at present.

"Looking at the scale of the risk obesity poses, it has now become very important to end all confusion around methods of weight loss and come with a complete, infallible solution. This can be achieved only by making a standardized scientific procedure of weight loss and bringing in expertise in the field of nutrition for it," said Komal Deepak, CEO, Panacea Health Education.

"The problem with most of the weight-loss centers and products is that instead of making the person understand the science and logic behind the weight gain, they merely work on creating easy and shortcut methods of weight loss, which could be as irrational as 'mono-diet and sauna bath'," said Divyaa Ravi of Fitness One Group India Ltd.

Is it OK to drink diet soda?

Posted: September 10, 2012 at 11:12 pm

Scientific studies suggest you should probably lay off the sugar-packed Big Gulp.

But what about their zero-calorie counterparts?

There is this cultural lore that has people thinking that diet soda is whats really bad for you and that the other stuff (sugar-sweetened soda) isnt as bad, said Harold Goldstein of the California Center for Public Health Advocacy. Worries include that artificially sweetened drinks will cause cancer or diabetes.

Though most science dissuades drinking regular soda, diet sodas comparatively ambiguous research has not completely dispelled the lore.

Here are answers, some rather nuanced, to common questions about diet soda.

Is diet soda poisonous?

No, it wont poison you.

Most diet sodas are made with artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, which are several hundred times sweeter than real sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. Because not much of these are needed, a diet soda can get away with negligible calories.

Artificial sweeteners have probably been the most intensively studied food ingredient ever, said Richard Mattes, professor of foods and nutrition at Purdue University. Every panel has cleared them.

Does diet soda make me eat more?

No proof that patients lose weight after joint replacement surgery

Hip and knee replacements are now a common surgical procedure with more than 700,000 total joint arthroplasties (TJAs) performed in the US every year. Due to the reduction in pain and increases in mobility experienced after having a TJA, it could be expected that weight loss may occur as a by-product of the surgery. But is this the case? This is the question posed by Maria Inacio, a doctoral candidate from the San Diego State University/University of California, San Diego, who is employed at Kaiser Permanente, and her colleagues at those institutions. They conducted a review of the current literature to find out. Their results appear online in the journal Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, published by Springer.

Obesity itself is one of the major risk factors leading to the need for a hip or knee replacement. Activity can be severely restricted by joint pain in these individuals and one might presume weight loss would occur postoperatively as mobility improves with increased activity levels. Such weight loss could reduce the risk of complications such as prosthetic loosening, thus reducing the chances of requiring further surgery.

The authors conducted a review of twelve studies meeting their criteria. They considered the studies thus far in this area to be of generally low quality with small sample sizes and poor methods, leading to a risk of bias. Overall the studies reported between 14 percent to 49 percent of patients had lost weight a year after having a TJA. However, the ranges of weight loss suggested inconsistent loss and the differences in the study designs meant that overall there was no conclusive pattern. In fact, the studies showed that more patients gained weight than lost.

In a CORR Insights commentary on the manuscript, Stuart B. Goodman, MD, PhD, of Stanford University said, "Obese patients frequently tell clinicians that they are overweight because their painful hips or knees limit their physical activities and their capability to 'burn calories.' Unfortunately, after a comprehensive analysis of the data, the answer to this important question is still unknown."

Inacio and colleagues believe that since TJAs are such a common surgery, further research in this field is warranted and a large representative national study would be desirable. Weight loss, either to prevent the development of osteoarthritis or to reduce long-term morbidity after a hip or knee replacement is extremely desirable in this population. Current evidence is not sufficiently robust to provide an accurate picture, and clinically effective measures cannot be put into place unless the present situation is understood.

Diet Chef Reveals How Your Dinner Date Could Make You Fat

LONDON, Sept. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- If you're struggling to lose weight don't give up on the diet yet, new research suggests that one of the top tips to helping you lose weight may be as simple as just getting a new lunch buddy!

Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition by psychologists at the University of Birmingham monitored 100 women at a lunch buffet and found that people unconsciously mirrored eating habits of the people around them even if they were trying to lose weight.

They found when those around the women helped themselves to the fattening array of cocktail sausages, pasties and crisps, while avoiding vegetables, the women did the same. On the contrary when they chose healthier items, the women did also consuming around 200 fewer calories.

Dr Eric Robinson, a psychologist at the University of Birmingham, said: "We found that pairing people with unhealthy eating partners reduced the amount of healthy food they were eating. They tended to pick the foods that were high in calories".

Therefore it is thought that recognising this effect could help people who are trying to diet and lose weight to avoid being influenced by others.

Caron Leckie, nutritionist at Diet Chef says "The research reflects the effect of social influence on our eating habits it can be harder to stick to a diet, choose the better options and lose weight if everyone around you is doing the opposite. It can be a good idea to make sure when you start your diet that someone close to you is there also as a dieting buddy or for support on your weight loss plan".

Diet Chef carefully counts the calories of all meals so dieters on the plan will be averaging less than 1,200 calories per day. The daily menu allows you to get delicious diet food delivered, as well as offering a tasty and varied, healthy balanced plan encouraging dieters to lose weight at a healthy pace.

Those on the diet looking to check their own progress can do so using the weight loss calculator as well as sharing their weight loss success stories via the website or Diet Chef social media channels.
