Camas-Washougal weight-loss challenge offers Dad's Day events

The east county weight-loss challenge, Camas and Washougal on a Diet, will host a five-station obstacle course to celebrate Father's Day.

The events include challenging local dads' skills in pitching baseballs, loading a truck, running a playground obstacle course, hiking an uphill path and barbecuing a tasty, healthy meal.

Camas Mayor Scott Higgins and Washougal Mayor Sean Guard also will step on the scale and report their weight loss status.

Registration for the event will run from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Forest Home Park, 640 N.W. Logan St., Camas. Obstacle stations open at 2:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the winner of each station.

Stations include Perfect Pitch at Forest Home Park baseball field; Playground Showdown at Forest Home Park playground; Fast-Packin' Papas at the Vega Gym parking lot, 840 N.W. 10th Ave.; Get 'er Dun Run (or walk) at Vega Gym; and Picnic BBQ at Crown Park at 15th Avenue and Everett Street.

Study Reports Weight Loss and Improved Sugar Control in People with Type 2 Diabetes Using a Protein-Rich Meal …

PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

A pilot study shows that a protein-rich meal replacement made from soy, yogurt, and honey (Almased) helps patients with type 2 diabetes lose weight, gain better control of their blood sugar, and decrease their daily insulin dose. Patients in the study also lowered their body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumference, and fasting glucose levels, while improving their HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides. The results were reported at the American Diabetes Associations 72nd Scientific Sessions.

In light of the number of people with type 2 diabetes related to obesity, its very important to investigate and explore any new tool that may have a positive effect on both weight and blood sugar, said Stephan Martin, MD, medical director of the West-German Diabetes and Health Centre in Dsseldorf, Germany, who conducted the study. One of the most interesting findings to us was that Almaseds positive effect on blood sugar was independent of its effect on weight loss.

Significant changes were seen at 12 weeks in the various study outcomes measured:

While the formal study with Almased ended after 12 weeks, investigators followed up with patients after one and a half years. Four patients who continued to use Almased reported additional decreases in insulin doses, HbA1c, and weight. Two of these patients were able to stop insulin injections completely. The long-term use among some patients points to the ease of incorporating Almased into a daily dietary routine suitable for people with type 2 diabetes. A larger study of more than 300 patients is underway in Germany to confirm the findings of this pilot study. Both of these studies are sponsored by Almased-Wellness-GmbH.

Some people will be surprised that patients could stop insulin completely; we need to change the thinking that once insulin is started there is no way to stop it, said Dr. Martin. Motivated patients who are committed to long-term dietary changes and increased physical activity can make a real change in their weight and metabolic measures.

The problem of obesity and type 2 diabetes is large and growing, said Silke Ullmann, MPH, RD, LDN, of Almased USA. We are committed to studying Almased to see how it may help people lose weight and gain better control of blood sugar levels.

Study Regimen

The pilot study enrolled 22 men and women with type 2 diabetes who were also obese. For the first week of the study, participants replaced all three daily meals with Almased. In weeks two through four, they replaced two meals and had a protein-rich lunch. For the last eight weeks of the study they only replaced one meal with Almased. Fifteen participants (68%) completed the study, a rate comparable to other diet-change studies.

It is an excellent source of fiber, it has very little saturated fat, it's low in sodium, and it has a good amount of high-quality protein per serving.

Edamame is a variety of soybean that is picked when it is green and is consumed boiled or steamed, often with some coarse salt sprinkled on top. It's sweeter and nuttier than the common field soybeans raised for animal feed or soybean oil production.

Because it is so high in fiber, eating edamame helps you feel full longer, so you often eat less, helping to manage weight.

Most Americans get only about half of the 25 to 35 grams of fiber needed daily. Edamame, with about 8 grams of fiber per cup, can help make up the deficit.

Consuming more fiber daily can also help to lower insulin resistance in folks with blood sugar problems, making it easier for them to keep blood sugar under control.

In addition to its fiber component, soy has certain phytonutrients, known as isoflavones, which may help lower LDL cholesterol and reduce risk of heart disease. More than 40 scientific studies have shown a reduction in this "bad" cholesterol when study recipients increased soy in their diets. One study showed volunteers who consumed 25 grams of soy protein per day reduced both their systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings. One cup of edamame provides 17 grams of protein.

Those same isoflavones that help lower LDL cholesterol may also help prevent certain forms of cancer, although the scientific data is less clear about this.

This week Chris Powells skills are put to the test as he encounters a woman whose tragic past serves as the catalyst for her weight gain. Is Chris enough of a life coach to help this woman excise her demons? Find out in this recap of Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition. We join Jacqui, 30, at 355 pounds and crying her eyes out. Shes locked herself in the bathroom and the shows producers are pleading with her to come out. Seems Jacqui has a problem with her body image. Wed imagine thats why she signed up for this show.

But Jacquis backstory goes a little deeper than just a love affair with fried foods. We are introduced to photos of Jacqui at age 13 when she was skinny and then at age 15 when she began to gain weight. What happened? A boy attacked her at a party at at 14. Attacked is apparently ABCs euphemism for what reality show audiences cant handle, so we have to leave it at that. But she started to use food as a comfort and a hiding mechanism, and by the time Jacqui graduated high school, she was 100 pounds overweight.

Shawn, her fire-fighter husband, is very supportive of her goal to lose weight so Chris Powell shuffles her off from Florida to Los Angeles to get started. Jacquis new lifestyle regimen will consist of 1500-calorie meals and 2-4 hour workouts six times a week. For her medical exam, the nurses cant even draw blood out of her arm through the layers of fat, so they have to resort to drawing it from her foot. The doctors also talk to her about herpolycystic overian disease, which has prevented her from having children. If shes able to lose the weight, doctors say, she will likely be able to have the children shed been wanting.

Chris starts to push Jacqui in the weight room and initially Jacqui proves to be kind of a puss. She breaks down crying. But Chris reminds her that shes doing this for her husband, so she soldiers forth and pushes herself to the limit. She returns to Florida to find that her home has been remodeled with her own home gym. No more excuses.

Jacquis next challenge is to lose 90 pounds in 3 months, not safe weight loss by any standards, but this is reality TV, so what should be real about it? But if she does, shell win a trip to Ireland for the honeymoon she never got to enjoy with her husband. And, Chris is going to with Jacqui and Shawn to help her lose the weight, to make for one of the most awkward threesome living arrangements since Threes Company. But Jacqui has now lost 62 pounds and is making progress.

In a rather cruel change up of the old exercise routine, Chris takes Jacqui to the theater. She loves the theater, but hasnt been as of late because the seats dont accommodate her size. For her work out, Chris makes Jacqui sit in every of the 300 seats in the theater. She cries, but she does it.

Ultimately, Jacqui makes weight at the end of Phase 1 at 263 pounds, shell be heading to Ireland soon. Top o the mornin to ya, Jacqui!

Unfortunately, Jacqui cant keep up this reality TV thing and a full-time job at the same time. So after a discussion with her husband, she decides to quit the job with his support. Hell even take on more work. What a guy!
