2021 Refresh: What’s a time-restricted diet? Exploring simple options to help you eat healthier – WKYC.com

Posted: January 5, 2021 at 5:49 am

Most resolutions don't last an entire year. But there are things you can do when it comes to healthy eating that can give you a quick 'detox.'

CLEVELAND Whether you admit it or not, most people have some sort of diet in mind when it comes to New Years Resolutions. But sticking to a new eating plan usually doesn't make it through an entire year -- or even a month. In our "2021 Refresh" series, we asked a couple experts what are some simple things we can do to just kickstart healthy eating?

I think the trend that I'm seeing is like a complete overhaul, says Cleveland Clinic Dietician, Kristin Kirkpatrick.

Every January, millions of people vow to lose weight or eat healthy. How long does it last? Research shows its 66 days on average.

So, how can we start small?

Number one, January is a great time to really encompass that kind of dry January mentality," Kirkpatrick says. "Even if it's just a week, if you go a week without having any alcoholic beverages, typically you can go two weeks three weeks.

She says also try to eat foods with three ingredients or less and you'll automatically ditch the majority of processed foods.

I also think frequency of eating is an easy thing to change and a huge detoxing mechanism, so if you think about the fact that if you take in a time-restricted eating approach and you say, 'OK, this week Im only going to eat eight hours every day and there's nothing outside of that time, nothing outside of that window.

Studies show time-restricted eating jumpstarts weight loss, helps lower cholesterol and improves type 2 diabetes.

The best diet out there is the one you will stay on long-term, and that's different for everyone. I wouldn't do well on a ketogenic diet, but a lot of my patients do. I think if you're looking in more general terms, a Mediterranean diet is always a really great approach because it does encompass still being able to have fats, still being able to have animal proteins in the form of chicken or fish and then it has a lot of other things like obviously fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

Good News Matters: Central Arkansas chef reflects on weight loss journey after shedding 60 pounds in a year – KARK

Posted: January 5, 2021 at 5:48 am

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.- With a new year comes new resolutions and for many, that means getting healthy and losing weight. One Arkansas man made that decision one year ago, and his results are inspiring.

Chef Serge Krikorian runs a successful catering company, Vibrant Occasions Catering, and just launched a food truck. But his latest accomplishment he says is one of his greatest. It all started exactly one year ago.

I just got on the scale, It was the highest it has been, Chef Serge Krikorian said.

He decided it was time to make a change for himself and his family.

At that point I was taking 5 medications for blood pressure and prediabetes, Chef Serge said.

He and his wife Mary started walking and eating healthier. In the course of one year, he lost 60 pounds and his wife lost 70 pounds.

It was a lot of work. But the rewards are that I feel better and I only take a half a dose of one of my pills and by January Ill be off, Chef Serge said.

His advice for others? To make the decision eat healthy, exercise and dont make excuses. He says his excuse was always that he was busy. But he did this in his busiest year ever launching a food truck on top of his catering business- and the results?

Im so much happier. Were so much happier, Chef Serge said.

Weight loss: How to lose weight fast – top fat burning snacks – Express

Posted: January 3, 2021 at 3:55 pm

He explained: For example, a mixture of dried prunes, dates, raisins and dried apricots.

These dried fruits aid weight loss because they are full of fibre which makes you feel full and satisfied for longer.

They are also packed with vitamins and minerals and are a great source of antioxidants.

Many of these dried fruits promote weight loss, improve digestion and prevent overeating due to their richness in dietary fibre, which also helps the body get rid of toxins which is beneficial for digestion and gut health.

Plantain chips are a great healthy substitute for your regular packet of crisps.

Eating food in moderation is also another key aspect of the weight loss journey.

Dark chocolate, when eaten in moderation, can actually provide the body with a lot of benefits.

David said: Dark chocolate is another yummy healthy snack that can be beneficial for weight loss as it can help reduce cravings for sweet or unhealthy foods and promote the feeling of fullness.

Dark chocolate can also aid your metabolism as it is packed with monounsaturated fatty acids which help boost your metabolism and as a result you will burn calories faster.

However, when choosing dark chocolate make sure you check the ingredients as many are still packed full of sugar.

Yoghurt is also another great snack option as well as being a suitable breakfast for weight loss.

It is filling as well as being high in protein and it can be topped with a variety of different fruits to make it more appealing.

Yoghurt can also be topped with honey for added sweetness.

David went on: Yoghurt is a high-protein snack and due to its complex chemical structure, the body breaks it down gradually which can help you to keep that feeling of fullness.

This in turn will make you less likely to reach for additional snacks and help you to control your calorie intake which will help with weight loss.

It is also a calcium-rich food which helps to burn fat and promote weight loss.

Hummus is a great source of fibre and protein, which can help to promote weight loss.

It is full of fibre and protein which both make you feel fuller for longer making you less likely to overindulge. Hummus is also great for digestion and it can be enjoyed with carrots, celery, and peppers which are all a great source of dietary fibre.

How to Safely Lose Weight After the Holidays – Science Times

Posted: January 3, 2021 at 3:55 pm

The holidays are a season of merriment that only comes once a year, and often all good intentions of keeping one's health and nutrition on track are easier said than done. It is hard to keep track of one's weight when there is a feast laid out on the table during Christmas or New Year celebrations.

On average, Americans consume about 4,500 caloriesduring the holidays, but for those social butterflies who have lots of commitments to attend parties that number could add up. Unfortunately, the accumulation of these pounds will not melt as fast as the snow in the spring.

But that does not mean that losing weight is impossible. Here are some tips to safely lose that holiday weight gain:

Often, people mistake thirst for hunger, so they end up eating more. It is important to discern the differences between being hungry or thirsty to avoid adding up calories to the body.

Besides, there also benefits to drinking wateras it helps the stomach feel full. Experts suggest that taking a sip of water before sitting down to a meal or even during a meal will add volume and weight to the meal, making the person feel full.

In losing weight, it is not advisable to lose all the unwanted weight at once. Experts advise that people should start focusing first on the 10% of their weight loss goal as it has the best chance of ultimate success.

Additionally, losing the first 10% of the weight loss goals yields the biggest health gain because the belly fat is usually the first to come off. Belly fat is considered to be the most dangerous fat in the body, according to an article by The Conversation.

Sugar consumption could be addicting and could lead to an unhealthy cycle of cravings and binges because of the insulin spikes that accompany foods high in sugar. Insulin is responsible for keeping the blood sugar down, storing extra calories as fat, and causes a sugar crash later that leads to a "food coma."

Since sweets are expected and inevitable during the holiday celebrations, it has also become the season for high sugar levels and fat. It would be best to cut out eating the sweet stuff after the holidays for at least four to ten days to decrease cravings for these foods, according to Muscle and Fitness website. Slowly, the body would start to crave more naturally sweet foods, such as fruits and vegetables.

According to studies, eating more proteinwill prolong the feeling of fullness because it is more difficult to digest which leads to less of an insulin spike. Researches done in many European countries found that those who ate a high-protein breakfast or lunch were less hungry at their next meal.

Also, protein takes a few more calories to digest, as long as the person sticks to a low-fat protein like chicken, salmon, greek yogurt, or thinly sliced turkey breast.

Experts said that one of the main causes of overeating is having low self-esteem. Training oneself to focus on their best trait rather than their weaknesses could be helpful. It might help to buy new clothes or update one's hairstyle and get a makeup suggestion to feel attractive every day.

The Health Risks Of Being Obese (And Treatment Options) – The Island Now

Posted: January 3, 2021 at 3:55 pm

Obesity is becoming a fast-growing health condition, affecting many people all around the globe. With all the endless temptations of the sweet and sugary snacks on offer, that can be found almost everywhere, the willpower to stick to a healthy, balanced diet can be a losing battle. Our local corner shops and supermarkets stock masses of these unhealthy treats and every time you turn on the TV, the adverts are constantly dangling these unsavory nibbles before your eyes. Which does make it extremely difficult to tell yourself, no!

Its true! People are indulging in far too much of an unhealthy diet and are suffering the consequences and health implications of becoming overweight. It may just start with the occasional treat, every now and again. It could be after a hard days work or when you have had a challenging day. Does it then become the highlight of our week maybe? That then turns into the highlight of our everyday lives and becomes regular comfort food.

Many people do not realize the serious health risks associated with overindulging in the world of fatty, sugary, and salty foods. When the odd treat then becomes a regular ritual, it can become a very dangerous path you are heading down. There are many serious health conditions you are inviting with open arms and should be aware of. After all, your health is the most important thing in life, without that you have nothing.

High Blood Pressure/Cholesterol can have a disastrous effect on your body. Eating foods that are high in salt and even having too much alcohol on a regular basis, can increase your chances of developing high blood pressure which can lead to heart disease.

Type 2 Diabetes is a major risk for those who suffer from obesity and are overweight. Type 2 diabetes can lead to life-threatening illnesses such as heart disease, strokes, and can even cause blindness.

Heart Disease can develop in those who do suffer from obesity and more likely to suffer a stroke. They are at a much higher threat than those who stick to a balanced, nutritional diet.

Cancer is a tragic illness. The disease can be far more of a risk to those who are obese. Being overweight contributes to falling victim to certain cancers including cancer of the kidneys, breasts, and the colon.

Sleep Apnea can occur in people who are overweight. It is evident that obesity is a huge factor in developing this serious sleep disorder.

The fantastic news is, there is hope on the horizon for people who are finding it a war when contending with controlling their weight. With a vast amount of successful ways that do actually work, the ambition of dropping a few sizes is possible.

There are many roads you can go down to seek treatment for losing weight and fighting against the battle of obesity. There are mountains of diet plans, medications, and procedures. Keep in mind everybody is different and some people may not be suited to one or more methods of losing that extra weight gain. Here are a number of ways to get you started on your journey.

Surgery can be a huge success in enabling a person to lose weight. Two popular options include gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery. It can minimize a lot of potential and serious health conditions including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

Reducing Your Calories is a great way to get you started in shedding those unwanted pounds. Introduce more foods that are high in fiber to your diet such as fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. Seek out a diet and weight loss plan that suits you.

Exercising is paramount when it comes to keeping your mind and body healthy. Working out on a regular basis really can help you in losing significant weight and will result in you feeling much more positive! Mentally and physically.

Medication can be prescribed if dietary and physical weight loss methods have failed. A doctor can prescribe some medications to help a person in losing that extra weight if they have struggled with other approaches.

Losing weight is certainly never going to be an easy task. However knowing the potential health issues, you could face in the future is an incentive to look after your body and conquer obesity. Possessing the strength and the willpower will enable you to accomplish your goal.

Immunity-boosting foods for women over 40 – The Indian Express

Posted: January 3, 2021 at 3:55 pm

Women and men age differently. With age, women experience the slowing down of metabolism and their bodies also start to lose muscle mass and slow down due to physical changes such as menopause which makes middle-aged women more prone to weight gain, mood changes, and other health issues.

Hence, post the age of 40, nutritional needs and metabolism rates (how fast the body converts food to energy) for most women undergo significant change. Maintaining a healthy diet and getting regular exercise can help them feel significantly better and boost their overall health. Avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol or fizzy drinks is known to alleviate menopause symptoms. In addition to this, avoiding spicy, fried foods is also recommended, says fitness and nutrition expert Rohit Shelatkar, vice president, Vitabiotics Ltd.

Below, he shares a list of immunity-boosting foods that can help women nearing menopause

Chia seeds: Chia seeds are packed with fibre, omega 3 fatty acids, magnesium for healthy bones and complete plant-based protein. Because they absorb water so well, consuming chia seeds can help with satiety and curb unexpected hunger pangs more easily. Chia seeds can be added to a morning smoothie or oatmeal to increase the nutritional value of the meal.

Citrus fruits: Oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes include tons of antioxidants, fibre, vitamin C, and other nutrients that research has proven to boost brain health, aid in weight loss, protect the heart and keep the skin radiant.

Eggs: They are rich in vitamin D and full of iron, both nutrients that women often lack. Eggs are also a great source of protein for menopausal women and they have been linked to reduced cholesterol levels, heart disease risk, and obesity. The moderate fat and high protein content, plus the lack of carbohydrates and sugars, makes eggs an excellent choice for women over 40.

Oily fish: Healthy fats found in oily fish such as salmon and trout should be consumed daily. These foods help to manufacture necessary hormones in womens bodies. They also support brain, heart, and joint health. Foods with healthy fats also help keep the stomach full for longer. Omega 3 fatty acids that are found in oily fish may also help to reduce menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats.

Nuts: Nuts make for a filling snack that can help with weight loss because theyre high in fibre, have healthy fats, and high amounts of protein.

Carrots: Packed with vitamin A, carrots help keep the skin smooth and vision sharp. This vegetable contains fibre and has an active ingredient that helps fight dark spots, wrinkles, and acne.

Apples: Apples are known to help lower the bodys absorption of excess dietary fats. This helps one feeling full for longer. Moreover, it is believed that including apple in daily diet helps in keeping heart-related issues at bay.

Yogurt: It is an excellent source of calcium and is rich in protein. It is a perfect snack for keeping them full and energised. Plus, it has active cultures that support gut health.

A lot of women feel that losing weight after the age of 40 is difficult and close to impossible. However, this is a myth and women must remember that with the right kind of diet and exercise, it is absolutely possible to lose weight and promote overall wellness, says Shelatkar.

New Year, New You – northernexpress.com

Posted: January 3, 2021 at 3:54 pm

Bring on your best in 2021 By Lynda Wheatley | Jan. 2, 2021

It wont be hard to top 2020, a year that well remember for all that it wasnt and couldnt safely be. So while you probably could do nothing but sit on the couch and wait for the calendar to plod toward an almost-certainly better tomorrow, why not invest the singular time you have now near-empty of travel, social commitments, and extended family gatherings on No. 1: you. We tapped mind, body, spirit, and home experts around the region for 10 transformative resolutions to make for new you in the new (and sure-to-be-greatly improved) year. Heres what they suggested:

Resolution: Remember who you are.Modern life has many benefits, but it's also not terribly conducive to remembering who you really are: a powerful, brilliantly bright, lovely, magic thing. In a world designed to help you forget, find something every day that makes you remember paint badly, sing while you cook, light a candle, feed the squirrels. Sarah Bernstein of Sarah and Source tarot reading and teaching, Traverse City

Resolution: Instead of selecting a specific diet, look at behavior change. It is impossible to follow a diet with breakfast, lunch, and dinner if there is currently no time in the morning for breakfast. In this situation, look at WHY there is no time for breakfast. Do you need easier breakfasts? To determine how to make time for breakfast? To come up with more grab-and-go options? Address behaviors instead of forcing yourself to fit the diet. Amanda Evans MS, RDN, CDCES, registered dietitian, diabetes specialist and nutrition coach at Amanda Evans Nutrition Consulting, Charlevoix

Resolution:Live more mindfully.Mindfulness can reduce stress, increase focus, and help regulate your emotions. How? Stop and notice five things you cansee, four you canfeel, threethings you canhear, two things you cansmell, onething you cantaste. Next, pay attentionto yourbreath. Is it fast, slow, deep or shallow?See if you can make your inhales a little deeper and exhales a little longer. Cathy Fitzgerald and Kay Epple, owners of Just Bee Yoga + Well-being, Traverse City

Resolution: Do the Thing! You know that thing youve been waiting to do? DO IT! Dont wait. If 2020 taught us anything, its to go for it when you can, so look at your bucket list and commit to crossing something off of it in 2021. Why wait? While youre at it, be sure to tell someone about your plans. Make it someone who will cheer you on, but also call you on your excuses or even better, someone who will join in. That way, youre not alone, and you can celebrate your success together! Anne Bonney, professional speaker and courage ignitor, YourChangeSpeaker.com

Resolution: Take 10 for you.The stress of COVID-19 weighs on everyone: Kids cant go to school. Parents are working from home or maybe not working. A positive attitude can be a challenge. So, before lashing out at your kids, your partner, or yourself, take 10 for you: Breathe deeply. Take a walk. Watch a funny video. Turn up the music and dance. Meditate. Ten minutes can save the day. And your sanity. Mary Jo Zazueta, development director, Traverse Bay Childrens Advocacy Center

Resolution: Start a gratitude journal.Grab a notebook and pen and spend 5 to 10 minutes a day being grateful for what you have, who you are, and the awesome things you accomplished today! Focusing on positive feelings produces positive results and will help create the momentum and success you seek in 2021! Bonus for Northern Express readers: To receive my FREE digital journal, please email me at kjersti@mylifehealthcoach.com,my gift to you! Kjersti Kontio, certified life & health coach, owner at My Life Health Coach LLC, Harbor Springs

Resolution: Create a SadhanaOld habits can be hard to break without looking inward. Sadhana is Sanskrit for personal practice. It is a practice of self-discipline, and through direct experience, leads to an expansion of awareness and self-transformation. The daily practice can be anything from yoga, to chanting mantra, to meditating, just as long as it is consistent and heartfelt.

The byproducts of such a practice are emotional regulation, inner-composure, and an experience of calm. There is truly no more valuable thing we can give to ourselves. How to create a Sadhana:

Set an attainable and suitable sadhana (length of practice, time of day, choice of yoga and/or meditation, etc.)

Be patient and gentle with yourself.

Dont become disappointed or give up it is a practice, not perfect!

If you miss a day, start again and keep up!

Jessica Merwin, HeartMath mentor, Kundalini yoga teacher, entrepreneur, and owner of New Moon Yoga Studio, Traverse City

Resolution:Prioritize your people so they feel it.In a culture and community expecting your time and talents, intentionally put your personal cheerleaders first. You know theyll wait in line for you, however, faith, family, and dear friends shouldnt have to take a number. Do long work hours or distance separate you from your favorite people? If you read, share book titles. Enjoy dialogue that might simply be a lunch-hour text emoji after finishing chapter seven. Treasured conversations will deepen the personal connection you both deserve. Wendy Nienhouse, co-founder of Agevix Exercise Therapy, host of BoomerAbility on WTCM NewsTalk 580 AM, Traverse City

Resolution: Make your bedroom a retreat; eliminate its clutter. Questions to ask: What stays and what goes? Do I love it, use it, need it, or does it need to live somewhere else? Donate, sell, or relocate items to another room. Achieve this by breaking down the job into small tasks. Beth Ruck, owner of Conquering Clutter, Cadillac

Resolution: Shift your attention.Being present is a shift of attention. Meditation and mindfulness shift attention from a busy mind to a tool. Eventually, this allows us to recognize the part of us that is already in the present. Practice eyes opened and closed to strengthen your ability to be present in life. Rodasi Campbell, monk, priestess, mentor, and author of Meditation for Badassery, Traverse City
