Why losing visceral fat is so important for your health here’s how to do it and what to expect – Business Insider Australia

Posted: December 28, 2020 at 2:48 pm

Researchers have found that too much visceral fat is linked to high blood pressure, sleep apnea, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.

But what is visceral fat, and why is it so dangerous to your health? More importantly, how do you get rid of visceral fat if youre carrying too much?

This article discusses how to tell if you have too much visceral fat, how to get rid of it, and why its a good idea to put in the extra effort to do so.

Visceral fat is just one of four types of fat you store on and in your body. What differentiates visceral fat from other types is mainly location and how unhealthy it is for you:

The reason excessive visceral fat can increase the risk of heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes is because of how close it is to a major vein called the portal vein that heads to your liver.

Excess fat produces fatty acids (or lipids) that hitch a ride through the portal vein to the liver where they can cause issues with insulin and cholesterol. This, in turn, can cause or exacerbate cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Moreover, belly fat is thought to manipulate some of the hormones, like leptin, that control our hunger. And people who are obese have been found to have elevated levels of leptin, subsequently causing them to feel hungry more often, which could lead to more weight gain in the long-run.

Visceral fat is located under your muscles, so you can neither see nor feel it. Therefore, to tell if you have too much visceral fat you can either calculate your BMI or check your waist circumference.

Its important to note that BMI isnt always a clear indicator of how much excess body fat youre carrying. Therefore, its important to also consider your waist circumference and consult a physician about whether or not you have too much visceral fat.

According to Harvard Medical School, youre at high risk of excess visceral fat if youre a man with a waist circumference of over 40 inches or a woman with a waist circumference over 35 inches or more.

It can be tricky to tell if youre losing visceral fat, since youll likely be losing subcutaneous fat too. According to Michael Russo, MD, bariatric surgeon at MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Centre, keeping track of your BMI and waist circumference are the best ways to tell if you are losing visceral fat.

The best way to tackle visceral fat is to make long-term and sustainable lifestyle changes that focus on improving your diet and adding in exercise.

Diet is about 80% of the equation. Exercise is also very important getting your heart rate up for 30 minutes a day, every day, says Russo.

The type of exercise isnt as important as focusing on just getting your heart rate up and working up a sweat. Strength training, cardio, and other forms of exercise will do the trick. If you find yourself having trouble exercising regularly, start by taking long walks around your neighbourhood to work yourself up to more rigorous exercise.

As for diet, long-term lifestyle changes like adding in more veggies daily, watching sodium intake, and moderating the amount of processed foods and sugar you eat, can help you lose and keep visceral fat off.

Outside of following a diet, individuals can monitor total calorie intake, limit refined sugar, and increase the number of lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables they consume.

With these changes, it is possible to lose visceral fat at a reasonable pace. Though how your body may lose fat depends on factors such as genetics.

In general, visceral fat has been found to drop off more quickly with diet and exercise than other types of fat. Accordinging to Harvard Health, this is because it metabolizes more quickly into acids that the body can then discard (either through pee or sweat). Most doctors recommend that a healthy weight loss timeline works out to about 1-2 pounds a week.

Weight loss is individualized. It will depend on how much visceral fat you have to lose and how your body loses fat. However, according to the Mayo Clinic, cutting calories and exercising at least 30 minutes a day is the best way to approach losing visceral body fat. By sticking to a healthy diet and regular exercise, you should begin to notice a difference within a few months time.

If someone isnt losing visceral fat with lifestyle changes, surgery is another option.

The most effective way to reduce visceral fat if someone is carrying a large amount of it is bariatric or weight loss surgery, which alters you hormonally to a more normal hormonal profile, so your body doesnt want to carry excess fat anymore. Its like turning down the thermostat, says Russo.

Other surgical options that arent quite as effective as bariatric surgery, include balloon-based therapies, which can help limit the amount of food you eat by making you fuller faster.

Losing visceral fat takes time and effort. A low-carb diet and moderate exercise will help you shed any excess fat around your midsection.

Actively working towards losing visceral fat and living a more active lifestyle will benefit you in the long run. Everyone has some visceral fat and having some abdominal fat is not necessarily a sign that you need to lose weight.

However, an excess of belly fat can cause long-term adverse health effects. Its best to consult your physician to see if your belly fat is putting you at risk for heart disease or other health problems.

Why a UK ruling on trans care for kids could affect the US – Insider – INSIDER

Posted: December 28, 2020 at 2:46 pm

The UK High Court ruled transgender children under the age of 16 are "unlikely to be able to give informed consent" to receive gender-affirming treatments such as puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on December 1.

Following the verdict, the Tavistock and Portman NHS trust, the UK's only gender identity clinic for youth, has stopped any new referrals of hormone blockers or HRT for children under 16 years of age.

Doctors and lawyers told Insider that this verdict that this won't simply impact transgender youth in the UK. It's likely to set a precedent worldwide as the issue of transgender rights including access to gender-affirming care becomes an increasingly mainstream conversation globally, including in the US.

Their concern, they said, is that in the UK and beyond, children questioning their gender identity will have no choice but to go through a puberty they don't want, which can be a traumatic experience.

Doctors from the Endocrine Society and Pediatric Endocrine Society drafted a paper listing the possible dangers of preventing trans youth from obtaining gender-affirming care, warning that this care can be life-saving.

"Barring gender-affirming medical and surgical care for transgender and gender diverse individuals would force many to go through distressing and even traumatic experiences in life related to misgendering," Dr. Sean J. Iwamoto, senior author and Co-Chair of the Endocrine Society's Transgender Research and Medicine Special Interest Group, wrote in the paper.

The verdict came after Keira Bell, a 23-year-old woman who de-transitioned after receiving gender-affirming care, sued the Tavistock and Portman NHS trust for allowing her to take hormone blockers at 16 years old, and later testosterone.

Bell came to regret receiving gender-affirming procedures to treat the gender dysphoria she felt in her youth.

In a witness statement, Bell said the treatments left her with "no breasts, a deep voice, body hair, a beard, affected sexual function and who knows what else that has not been discovered." She says she was not given proper guidance from her doctors and counselors at Tavistock.

"I made a brash decision as a teenager (as a lot of teenagers do) trying to find confidence and happiness, except now the rest of my life will be negatively affected," Bell said.

Puberty blockers are a kind of gender-affirming treatment used to pause puberty for adolescents questioning their gender by blocking secondary sex characteristics like breasts and body hair from developing.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can lead to permanent changes such as a deeper voice and facial hair for those who take testosterone and breast development for those who take estrogen.

According to the Endocrine Society and Pediatric Endocrine Society's Clinical Practice Guideline on transgender medicine, puberty blockers should be prescribed to adolescents questioning their gender because their effects are not permanent.

HRT is only prescribed once a child has proven they can give informed consent to treatments with permanent changes like HRT or surgical intervention.

"The reason that most adolescents who take puberty blockers go on to hormone therapy is that most of the adolescents who are treated with puberty blockers in careful, conservative systems including the UK transgender clinic are correctly identified and are genuinely interested in more gender-affirming care as they age," Dr. Joshua D. Safer, coauthor of the guidelines, told Insider.

Bell's attorney Jeremy Hyam QC argued "nobody could sensibly think that a child of 13 or under who cannot in law give valid consent to sexual acts could possibly give informed consent to treatment of dubious benefits and lifelong consequences."

Similar arguments have been made in the US as various state legislators have attempted to pass similar bans on hormone blockers and HRT for trans youth on the basis that they are too young to understand their gender.

The largest study of trans youth to date found otherwise. The November 2019 study published in PNAS found trans youth develop their gender identity around the ages of three to four, similarly to their cisgender peers when they are in trans supportive environments.

Numerous studies have shown gender-affirming care can reduce depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts in trans youth.According to a September study published in Pediatrics, transgender youth are less likely to suffer depression and suicidal ideations the earlier they have access to gender-affirming care like puberty blockers and HRT.

This is because going through puberty of a gender a child does not identify as can lead to increased gender dysphoria, the distress that comes with one's body not matching their gender. Experts argue growing hips, breasts, body hair, a deeper voice, and developing a mental cycle can be traumatic for trans youth.

"The [High Court's] decision will force some transgender youth to go through a puberty that does not match their gender identity when that could have been avoided," Safer said. "In addition to the unnecessary psychological harm, the puberty will include permanent changes which will then have to be reversed with surgery."

When trans people are unable to receive gender-affirming care, they are often driven to seek it out in less safe spaces. A November study published in the Annals of Family Medicine found one in 10 trans Americans get HRT from the "grey market."

As the NHS appeals the ruling, trans youth in the UK are not sure what this means for their care. A clinician at GIDS told iNews treatment of young trans people has effectively stopped since the ruling.

Parents of trans children like Emma Williams are worried their children will enter puberty before the decision is lifted.

Williams' daughter, Emily, is 13 years old and transgender. She was meant to start hormones in December but was barred from doing so after the High Court's decision.

"Her body is changing, a body she already struggles to live in, so her now not getting to access blockers is a terrible blow," Williams wrote in a GoFundMe. "Without access to blockers I don't think she will make it through the next few years."

Safer told Insider the UK ruling could impact trans children in the US, whether it be through policy or attitudes towards trans youth.

"If other jurisdictions followed the UK court precedent, youth elsewhere would suffer the same harms as youth in the UK," Safer told Insider.

Even if that does not happen, the lobbying efforts to limit care for trans youth are fueling transphobic sentiments globally. "Discrimination against transgender people and attempts to disrupt healthcare will still be a source of much stress," Safer said.

What you should know before starting the low FODMAP diet that can help treat GI issues like bloating and diarr – Business Insider India

Posted: December 26, 2020 at 5:01 pm

People with gastrointestinal (GI) disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) often have trouble digesting certain kinds of carbohydrates, which causes a lot of uncomfortable symptoms like bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation.

In the early 2000s, researchers began looking for ways to describe these carbohydrates: Enter FODMAPs, short for fermentable, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, and monosaccharides, and polyols.

"A low FODMAP diet is really only something that needs to be tried if someone has gastrointestinal symptoms," says Jesse Houghton, MD, senior medical director of gastroenterology at SOMC Gastroenterology Associates. "Or if someone has IBS, celiac, food allergies. If a person is not experiencing any frequent bloating, flatulence, diarrhea or discomfort, a low FODMAP diet is not necessary.

After that, they start slowly reintroducing foods back into their diet one at a time. That way, they can identify which foods trigger their GI symptoms so that they can avoid those foods in the future.

Below are the main FODMAP carbs to avoid:

Fructose: Foods high in fructose include many processed foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup including sodas and candies. But you can also find relatively high amounts of fructose in certain fruits like apples, watermelon, dried fruits, and more.

Lactose: Lactose is a sugar that you can find in most dairy products including milk, cheese (though older, harder cheeses contain little lactose), yogurt, and ice cream. However, it can also turn up in unexpected places including bread, donuts, cookies, processed meats, salad dressings, and more. Check the nutrition label to be sure.

Mannitol: Mannitol occurs naturally in pumpkin, seaweed, celery and mushrooms. But many liquid medications like liquid gel capsules and cough medicines can also contain it.

Galactooligosaccharides: Beans, lentils and other legumes can contain high levels of galactooligosaccharides.

With all of these restrictions, it's hard to figure out what you should eat.

That's because eliminating high FODMAP foods from your diet comes with some risk. Turns out, your body needs these fermentable carbs to feed the good bacteria in your gut. Eliminating all FODMAP-containing foods could starve those bacteria, explains Shawn Talbott, a nutrition and biochemistry expert.

"When those bacteria are at suboptimal levels, we see increases in inflammation, stress, depression and other problems," Talbott says.

The low FODMAP diet "is a short-term elimination diet," says Pierce. "This is not a sustainable long-term diet."

If, however, you find that you need to eliminate the bulk of high FODMAP foods, you should consult a registered dietitian about any key nutrients you might be missing and how to balance your diet so you're still getting enough nutrients.

Consult your physician before starting this diet to make sure it'll work for your personal health needs.

5 Worst Foods for Your Brain, According to Doctors | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: December 26, 2020 at 5:01 pm

If you aspire to have a brain like Socrates, eat like a Greek.

The Mediterranean-style diet, full of vegetables, fruits, olive oil, moderate amounts of whole grains, fish, poultry, and nuts is neuroprotective; in other words, it's good for your noggin. In fact, a variation of the Mediterranean diet called the MIND diet intervention, which also limits sodium and processed foods, has been shown to slow brain aging by 7.5 years and reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

"Food is like a pharmaceutical compound that affects the brain," says Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, PhD, a UCLA professor of integrative biology and physiology. And depending upon what you're eating, that can either help or harm your cognitive ability. For example: "Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain's ability to learn and remember information," says Gomez-Pinilla. "But adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimize the damage."

So, while you're angling to get more fatty fish into your diet, burn some neurons conjuring up ways to eliminate these worst foods for your brain health below. And while you're at it, erase these 11 Worst Frozen Foods from your grocery list as well.

Foods fried in partially hydrogenated oils like French fries, chicken nuggets, battered fish, mozzarella sticks, wontons, and onion rings, contain some of the highest amounts of trans fatty acids. Trans fats are manufactured hydrogenated vegetable oils that stay solid at room temperature, so they won't spoil. Trans fatty acids raise your bad cholesterol and lower the good stuff, boosting your heart disease risk; studies show they're also harmful to the brain. A 10-year Japanese study involving 1,600 elderly people who did not have dementia found that those with the highest levels of industrial trans fats in their blood were up to 75% more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease or dementia by the end of the trial.

Trans fat-laden fried foods showed up regularly in a dietary survey of 1,018 people who were also given a memory test by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Their study published in PLOS ONE found that young men with the highest intake of trans fats performed the worst on a test of word recall. "Trans fats were most strongly linked to worse memory in men during their high productivity years," said Beatrice A Golomb, MD, a professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. "As I tell patients, while trans fats increase the shelf life of foods, they reduce the shelf life of people." You're aware of the health benefits of the flavanols found in dark chocolate. But you may not know that some chocolates, cocoa powders, cacao nibs, and even dark chocolates may contain neurotoxic heavy metals. A study of cocoa trees in Peru found that certain tree varieties pull high levels of cadmium from the soil that end up in chocolate bars and cocoa powder. In an analysis of chocolate products currently on the market, ConsumerLab.com found that some chocolate bars contained toxic levels of cadmium. "There's a limit to how much cadmium you should get," says Tod Cooperman, MD, president of ConsumerLab.com. While the United States has set no federal guidelines on cadmium in foods, California recommends limiting consumption to 4.1 micrograms per day. "I wouldn't have more than one cup of cocoa per day," Cooperman says. You can find a review of the tested chocolate products at ConsumerLab.com.

If you're looking to thread the needle between reaping the benefits of chocolate while avoiding the bad, stick to no more than one serving of chocolate per day.

Drinking sugar-sweetened beverages can be detrimental to your mental capacity. They are loaded with refined sugars like high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which has been shown to promote inflammation and oxidative stress. "Unfortunately, just like an expensive car, your brain can be damaged if you ingest anything other than premium fuel," writes Eva Selhub, MD, in the Harvard Health Blog. "Multiple studies have found a correlation between a diet high in refined sugars and impaired brain functionand even a worsening of symptoms of mood disorders, such as depression," writes Dr. Selhub, who is a clinical associate of the Benson Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In studies on rats, researchers found that a short-term diet high in refined sugars changed more than 200 sequenced genes (that are comparable to those in humans) in the hippocampus, a brain area crucial to memory. Support your brain health and replace soda with any of these 13 Healthy Foods That Boost Your Memory, According to Nutritionists.

You may have noticed, in other people of course, that booze can impair judgment and make otherwise intelligent people do and say stupid things. But, seriously, heavy alcohol consumption can cause significant cognitive dysfunction. In fact, studies have shown that long-term alcohol dependence can reduce the volume of your gray and white matter. In other words, it can shrink your brain. In work published in the journal Alcohol Research Clinical Reviews doctors using functional magnetic resonance imaging tested chronic alcoholics who had abstained from drinking for at least five days and discovered deficits in areas of the brain involved in verbal learning, processing speed, attention, problem-solving, and impulsivity.

But like most foods and drinks that affect your body, quantity often determines if you suffer a cost or gain a benefit. Recently a large, nationally representative study published in JAMA gave social drinkers something to toast: a few drinks may be good for preserving, not pickling, your brain. The University of Georgia analysis examined data on the more than 19,000 participants involved the decade-long Health and Retirement Study. Compared with never drinkers, low to moderate drinkers were less likely to experience a decline in mental status and such cognitive abilities as word recall and vocabulary. If you're not a drinker and thinking you should start, "don't," say the researchers. But if you're curious, the optimal number of drinks per week was between 10 and 14, according to corresponding study author Changwei Li, MD, PhD, MPH, of the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Georgia College of Public Health.

Artificially sweetened beverages don't contain sugar but, as we've reported in the past, they do have negative health effects, namely weight gain and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. A 2019 study in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke points to another potential problem, this one involving the brain. The researchers analyzed data on over 81,000 women and, after adjusting for common stroke risk factors, found that women who consumed 24 or more ounces of artificially sweetened beverages per day were 23% more likely to have a stroke than those who drank less than 12 ounces weekly. How does what you eat affect your chances of fighting infection such as the coronavirus? A Virginia Tech professor explains how diet can make a difference.

How does what you eat affect your chances of fighting viruses such as the coronavirus? A Virginia Tech professor detailed how diet can make a difference.

I think the biggest mistake people are making is (thinking) there is nothing they can do beyond social isolation to defend themselves against infections, said Carlin Rafie, an assistant professor at Virginia Tech and a registered dietitian.

Rafie has expertise in nutrition and dietetics, focused on health education of Virginia residents through the Virginia Cooperative Extension.

In addition to social distancing and wearing a mask, there are ways people can boost their personal defense system while waiting to get the coronavirus vaccine.

Rafie said bodies are highly capable of managing disease and defending against disease. One way to start is by eating more fruits and vegetables.

The dietary recommendations recommends about two cups of fruits a day and three cups of vegetables a day. But only one out of 10 Americans actually consume that amount, Rafie said.

Rafie believes that by increasing the number of servings of fruits and vegetables, the risk for disease can be decreased and health may be improved.

Fruits and vegetables high in vitamins A and C boost the immune system.

Vitamin A plays a really important role in the integrity of our skin and digestive tract, the epithelial tissue thats where a lot of infection gets in including respiratory tissue, Rafie said. Respiratory is kind of an epithelial tissue.

So which vegetables should you choose?

They should be the ones you like, otherwise youre not going to eat them, she said.

Think also in terms of varieties of colors and forms and vegetables, fresh, cooked, canned and frozen.

So that you consume them in sufficient quantities and variety, Rafie said.

Its not just fruits and vegetables that can help your body fight off disease, but a dose of dairy can also help, specifically dairy fortified with vitamin D.

Vitamin D plays an important role for balancing immune response in the immune system, Rafie said.

Dont do dairy? Rafie said you can look for alternative milk products or even orange juice fortified with vitamin D.

Rafie also recommends fermented foods with live active cultures, such as yogurt or kombucha, which are good for your digestive system and intestinal tract.

Having a really healthy intestinal tract and digestive system is really important to immune function, Rafie said.

Many people dont associate the two, but 70-80% of immune system lies in our GI tract. You need a healthy microbiome in the digestive tract, which fermented yogurt and such can give, Rafie said.

Other possibilities are sauerkraut that hasnt been pasteurized, kimchi and buttermilk.

But overall, Rafie said it is important to watch how much you are eating, and keep an eye on the scale.

Being obese has lots of health consequences. It also has consequences on your immune function, Rafie said.

Before the pandemic, many had regular routines that kept them eating healthy and exercising. While that doesnt always work with pandemic restrictions, Rafie said its time to create a new normal and get back into healthy habits.
