Posted: December 9, 2020 at 3:57 am

My breakfast: I have a slice of brown bread, with a piece of paneer and tea. Later, if I have a smoothie which contains flax seeds, some fruit in half a glass of milk.

My lunch: Chapatis made out of overnight soaked lentils (2) with any sabzi made at home and a bowl of curd.

In the evening, I have a banana or black tea.

My dinner: Before dozing off, I drink a glass of turmeric milk and half a spoon of homemade peanut butter!

Pre-workout meal: Black coffee

Post- workout meal: I have started supplementing with whey protein now, but never had anything special during my transformation.

I am never once cheated on my diet. In fact! I carry my own lunch box whenever I go out, even if I am going to attend a marriage function.

My workout: I workout for six days a week, spending 1.5 hours in the gym (focussing on abs training) and go for a 5km run every alternate day.

Low-calorie recipes I swear by: Nothing in specific. Everything can be eaten, as long as you follow the rule of moderation.

Fitness secrets I unveiled: Dinners should be kept as light as possible and portion control should be strictly practiced, no matter how tempting the food looks!

It is important to determine a balanced diet for yourself which fulfils all your requirements of protein, fibre, vitamins, essential fats and carbohydrates.

Holy weight-loss, the Wyze Scale is an amazing deal at $19.54 shipped – CNET

Posted: December 9, 2020 at 3:57 am

For just $25, the Wyze Scale measures not only weight, but also body fat, BMI, heart rate and more.

Friends, let us not be ruled by the bathroom scale. Must we define our self-worth by a number at our feet? Are we to let our days be ruined upon discovering we've gained a pound? Nay, I tell you. Nay! Cast your scales into the river and look upon them no more.

Wait a sec... scale deal! The Wyze Scale normally sells for $20, plus $9 for shipping -- or $29 shipped if you buy it from Amazon. For a limited time, however, you can get the Wyze Scale for $19.54 shipped. Sure, that's only about a $9 savings, but when a product is this affordable to begin with, a discount is a discount. Plus, it's the lowest price on record.

Subscribe to CNET's Cheapskate newsletter and save on everything from phones to gadgets and more.

Wyze is the company behind a growing catalog of crazy-inexpensive smart home products, including the$20 CNET-favorite Wyze Cam, $7 Wyze Bulb and$100 Wyze Lock.

Like many of its smart ilk, the Wyze Scale pairs with your phone so you can track various metrics: weight, of course, but also things like body-fat percentage, muscle mass, metabolic age and half a dozen others. It even measures heart rate. All this happens courtesy of electrical signals sent through your feet. Thankfully, it has weight-only safety modes for pregnant women and people with pacemakers.

Read more:The best smart scales for 2020

What impressed me most about the scale is the design: It's really pretty, looking like something that could easily cost $100, and it has heft. (You can't begrudge Wyze charging a shipping fee for this.) I also like that it supports up to eight users, though that means each person in your family needs a phone, the Wyze app and a Wyze account.

It can integrate with Apple Health and Google Fit now; Fitbit and Samsung Health support are in the works (and have been since the product launched in May, so it's anybody's guess when that will actually happen).

The only real downside I can see is the IPX3 waterproof rating, meaning you shouldn't step out of the shower and directly onto it. Anything more than a small splash could be trouble.

But for $20 out the door? When some smart scales sell for as much as $100 to $150? Heck, you'd be hard-pressed to find a "dumb" scale this cheap.

Weight loss: Reset these hormones to lose stubborn belly fat – TheHealthSite

Posted: December 9, 2020 at 3:57 am

From exercise to eating healthy food, you have been doing everything right, but youre still not losing weight. So, whats going on? As it turns out, weight gain or loss isnt limited to eating and exercising. There are several reasons behind that expanding waistline, and you could be affected by any one of these. Case in point your hormones. Also Read - Your stubborn belly fat isn't going away? Try these workouts and lifestyle changes

Your hormones play a pivotal role in maintaining your weight. It influences your appetite, the fat your body stores in it and much more. It can be gruelling to lose weight if your hormones are out of whack. To help you understand and control the outcome, it is important to manage these 5 hormones. Also Read - Age is no barrier when it comes to weight loss

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, which helps regulate blood sugar. When there is an imbalance, it could lead to insulin resistance. What this means is that your body is unable to process insulin, which can make it more difficult for you to lose weight. You can manage insulin levels by avoiding added sugar, cut back on carbohydrates, eat a rich a diet rich in protein, healthy fats, and exercise. Cortisol is the stress hormone that controls your mood, motivation and fear. This hormone is also linked with insulin, the hormone that controls your blood sugar levels. An increase in your cortisol levels can lead to insulin resistance, which can cause weight gain. High cortisol levels can make your body store visceral fat around your abdominal area. So, try not to stress, sleep well and meditate!

Ghrelin, also known as hunger hormone, which is produced by the enteroendocrine cells of the gastrointestinal tract. It gets triggered when you are hungry. Blood levels of ghrelin are highest before meals and go back to normal after mealtime. Studies have shown that ghrelin levels are often lower in obese and overweight people. This means that your brain might not receive a signal to stop eating, which can lead to overeating. This could sabotage your weight loss plans.

Known as the satiety hormone, leptin is produced by your fat cells. It tells your brain that you have enough stored fat in the body, which regulates your appetite and helps prevent overeating. An imbalance in this hormone sends the wrong signal to the brain, which pushes you to eat more. Elevated insulin levels and inflammation in the hypothalamus are two of the common causes of leptin resistance.

The female hormone, estrogen also plays an important role in weight loss. Having too much or too less of estrogen can lead to weight gain. Estrogen, along with other hormones, helps you respond to different foods. In other words, the lack of estrogen can cause the body to use blood sugar and starches less effectively, which could make it harder for you to lose weight.

Innovative Peptide Study Evaluates Reduction in Liver Fat and Increased Weight Loss – Precision Vaccinations

Posted: December 9, 2020 at 3:57 am

Maryland (Precision Vaccinations)

A clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company announced that it has commenced dosing in a Phase 1 single ascending dose (SAD) and multiple ascending dose (MAD) clinical study of ALT-801.

Altimmune, Inc. stated in a press release that ALT-801 is a long-acting GLP-1/glucagon receptor dual agonist being developed for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which is expected to affect more than 13 million adults in the USA.

Altimmune believes the treatment of obesity is the cornerstone of treating NASH and the principal morbidities of NASH, added this press statement.

The Phase 1 clinical trial is designed to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics, and activity of ALT-801 over 6-weeks of treatment in overweight and obese but otherwise normal volunteers, located in Australia.

Readouts from the trial, including initial weight loss and liver fat reduction, are expected in the second quarter of 2021.

This 6-week study will be followed by a 12-week Phase 1b study in volunteers with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2021.

There is a significant need for an effective, well-tolerated treatment for NASH, commented Scott Harris, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Altimmune. Unlike other metabolic approaches to treat NASH, ALT-801 combines the balanced, equipotent effects of GLP-1 and glucagon activities into a single peptide.

The approach is expected to provide optimal effects in activating both a satiety signal to reduce appetite while also stimulating energy expenditure to promote a reduction in liver fat and increased weight loss.

The Company anticipates that ALT-801, administered once-weekly, will have a favorable pharmacokinetic profile and improved gastrointestinal (GI) tolerability due to the proprietary EuPort domain, which slows the entry of the drug into the circulation.

As GI intolerability is a significant limiting factor with all current GLP-1 based treatments, and improved tolerability profile is expected to be regarded favorably among clinicians. We look forward to a readout from the study in the second quarter of 2021, which could support strong competitive positioning for ALT-801 in the NASH treatment landscape.

ALT-801 is a novel peptide-based dual GLP-1/glucagon receptor agonist that is designed to treat the obesity and metabolic dysfunction that causes NASH. As the most severe form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD, NASH involves multiple metabolic pathways leading to the abnormal accumulation of liver fat, toxic lipid metabolites, and inflammation, resulting ultimately in fibrosis (cirrhosis) or liver cancer.

As observed in a well-established preclinical model of the disease, ALT-801 was capable of inducing significantly greater weight loss compared to semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, along with significantly greater decreases in liver fat, plasma ALT, and other markers of NASH.

Altimmune is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing intranasal vaccines, immune-modulating therapies, and treatments for liver disease.

To Help You Lose Weight and Boost Immunity Just Add Ginger – The Beet

Posted: December 9, 2020 at 3:57 am

Youprobably have a chunkof ginger root sitting in the bottom of a drawer in your fridge, ready to be shaved into action. Add it to hot water to drink as a natural elixir, or use it to addsome kicky flavor to stir-fries or smoothies. But there are so many more reasons to bring ginger into your daily diet, and they range from quelling an upset stomach to helping fight off infections, chronic disease, and even sneaky cancer cells growing somewhere in your body.

The strong, bitter taste and strange-lookingroot is a rare all-in-one natural remedy that is easy to buy, cheap to acquire, and may just have super-powers against every type of infection if the studies are to be believed. Scientists have written extensively on the miracle root's properties, used as a "nutraceutical" or food as medicine, for centuries the world over.

Gingerol, the active ingredient in ginger, isa powerful antioxidant, with anti-inflammatory properties, and anti-cancer properties and helps to help protect your body frominfections and lower inflammation that is the marker of chronic diseases, such as osteoarthritis. In addition, gingerol promotes longevity because it's known to fight cellular stress that causes aging.

Without overwhelming you with the scientific evidence, we looked at the sevenscientifically provenhealth benefits of ginger, and cite the studies that show the powerful properties it possesses. In addition, below are 5 of our favorite plant-based recipes that call for ginger, so you can enjoy the incredible health benefitspacked into every bite. Or,boil 4 cups ofwater and grate half of a teaspoon of gingerand let it steep for 10 minutesand sip your ginger tea throughout the day.

One major study finds that"Ginger contains many phenolic compounds such as gingerol, shogaol, and paradol that exhibit antioxidant, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammatory properties"which means it can fight everything from tumor cells to inflammation, which is often at the root of other chronic diseases. The health benefits of ginger are so powerful that when you inhale the strong, bitter aroma of the gingerol in your tea, you should associateit with healing.

Ginger is used as a natural remedy to help alleviate pain andstrengthen your immune system to help fight illnesses, ranging from infections to digestive disorders. If you're experiencing inflammation, which can show up as digestive stress, bloating or aches and pains inany area of the body, try adding ginger to your dailymorning drink.

6-Gingerol, the active component of ginger, has the ability to lower inflammationin the body according to one majorstudy. Gingerolis also usedfor medical purposes against symptoms of nausea, arthritis, and pain.

Inflammation in the body is often triggered by an infection but doctors will tell you that when chronic inflammation sets in that can accelerate the aging process and lead to a cascade of unhealthy events in the body including weight gain, high blood pressure and more. So taking ginger will help alleviate inflammation, which is turn will allow your cells to become healthier.

For foods that fight inflammation see this story. On the flip side, red meat, dairy and animal protein are known to promote inflammation, so a diet of whole plant-based foods will help fight inflammation, lower risk of disease and prevent infection.

Ginger has been used as an herbal medicine for decades, in particular, to fight oral and respiratory infections such as gum disease and viral infections like colds and flu.

The "gingerol compounds contain antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties,as well as several pharmaceutical properties," according to astudythat looked at the power of fresh ginger.

Sipping fresh ginger tea is effectiveforprotecting against gumbacteria likegingivitis and periodontitis, according to the study. These oral bacterias can causeperiodontal disease, an infection of thegums.

Another study found that fresh ginger has anti-viral activity against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a common respiratory infection that can be serious among old people and babies. In a time of COVID-19, respiratory health is especially important and "fresh, but not dried, ginger is effective" againstthe type ofplague that canblock lung function.

Gingerol may promote weight loss by reducing inflammation and lowering lipid accumulation in the body, according to studies that show ginger may be a natural weight-loss supplement.

In onestudy, obese rats were treatedwith gingerol for 30 days, and fed a high-fat diet. Research showed "significantly decreasedglucose levels," as well as body weight, leptin and insulin, two hormones that help regulate fat storage in the body. Essentially the rats on ginger had much healthier response to the food they ate than those not given the ginger.

In anotherstudy,473 overweight subjects were placed in randomized controlled groups and half consumed ginger supplements to see what the effect of ginger would be on weight loss. "Ginger intake reduced body weight, waist-to-hip ratio ... fasting glucose and insulin resistance" and helped to boost HDL "or good"cholesterol, according to the findings.

Another studylooked at the effects of taking dietary supplements for green tea, capsaicin and ginger extracts especially what impact these three supplements would have on weight loss. After 8 weeks on the supplements, 50 overweight women"had beneficial effects on weight, BMI, markers of insulin, metabolism." So while ginger was part of the study, it appears to be beneficial both on its own and taken together with green tea and capsaicin(found in chili peppers).

Gingerol has been shown tohelp reduce oxidative stress, which causes aging on a cellular level. Antioxidants fight the damagingresults of free radicals in the body, according to a study. If you're feeling overwhelmed, try sipping hot water with lemon and ginger to help releasethe antioxidants into your system and start to combat all that cellular stress and reduce inflammation.

One studyfound that the compound gingerolpromotes longevity and could extend lifespan. The studyfound "lifespan extending" properties of ginger," mostly by fighting off diseases and slowing the aging process itself.

Yet another study suggests that gingerol " has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties for controlling the process of aging" by fighting a variety of diseases, including cancer. The study states: "The anticancer potential of ginger is well documented and its functional ingredients like gingerols, shogaol, and paradols are the valuable ingredients which can prevent various cancers."

Ginger may reduce "tumorigenic risk factors," according to several studies. In addition, ginger supplements may help alleviate the side-effects of chemotherapysuch asnausea, cramps or pain, according to a study. For best use, studies recommend takinga supplement but always consult your doctor before deciding this or any course of treatment for cancer or side effects.

"The active compound of ginger has proven its role in cancer management" according to yet anotherstudy, through its tumor suppressor genes, and its ability tocut offbloodsupply to tumors which in turn diminishes their ability to grow."

The powerhouse compound in ginger, gingerol, contains "anti-tumorigenic activities," and may be effective in controlling the ability of certain cancers to grow: Colorectal, gastric, ovarian, liver, skin, breast, and prostate cancers, according to anotherstudy.

While you should always follow your doctor's advice for treatment, adding ginger to your smoothie or sipping it in a juice may help alleviate inflammation and add natural strength to other therapies you are taking.

Ginger is an anti-inflammatorythat helps to reduce pain related to arthritis. If you're experiencing joint pain, back pain, or have osteoarthritis, ginger may be a natural way to reduce swelling which will take pressure off the nerves and lower your pain. calm the nerves.

One study assessed the clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger for treatments of osteoarthritis. The participants who consumed ginger found "a statistically significant pain reduction," compared with those who didn't get the ginger supplement.

In another study, an herbal formulation that included ginger, turmeric, and black pepper was measured for effectiveness versusNaproxen, an anti-inflammatory drug sold as Aleve . Sixty patients with knee osteoarthritis were studied. Individuals were randomly assigned to receive daily turmeric extract, ginger, and black pepper together or Naproxen capsule for 4 weeks. The findings discoveredthat both groups significantly reduced knee pain, however, there were nosignificant differences between groups, meaning that ginger, turmeric and black pepper did just as well to reduce swelling and pain as the over-the-counter pain killer.

Ginger supplements have been shown to reduce the level of fasting blood sugars, whiich has implications for weight loss and diabetes or pre-diabetes. Inastudy, 41 subjects with type 2 diabetes were assigned to take ginger or placebo for 12 weeks. Results found that"ginger supplementation significantly reduced the levels of fasting blood sugar and A1c, which is a significant measure of how well insulin is working to helpregular blood sugar and keep your body healthy."It seems that oral administration of ginger powder supplement can improve fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin A1c... in type 2 diabetic patients," the study found.

Lose Weight and Stay Sane This Season! The Energy Balance Equation – The Great Courses Daily News

Posted: December 9, 2020 at 3:57 am

ByMichael Ormsbee, PhD,Florida State UniversityEdited by Kate Findley and proofread byAngelaShoemaker, The Great Courses DailyWhen reducing calorie intake to achieve weight loss, its important not to be too extreme in the number of reduced calories or muscle mass will be lost. Photo By Isarat / ShutterstockWhat Is the Energy Balance Equation?

You can manage your weight with the energy balance equation. This equation consists of three conditions: energy balance (the calories you take in match the calories that you expend or burn), positive energy balance (you eat more calories than expended), and negative energy balance (where more energy is expended than you take in).

Theoretically, if you are in energy balance, you will not lose or gain any weight. In a positive energy balance, you will gain weight, while in a negative energy balance, you will lose weight.

Either way, whether positive or negative energy balance, numerous changes occur to your bodycellularly, metabolically, and hormonallyto facilitate weight gain or loss. As an example, lets consider extreme weight loss where morbidly obese people are placed on medically supervised diets as an alternative to gastric bypass surgery. Morbidly obese is defined as a body mass index (weight to height ratio) above 40, or having over 100 excess pounds (lbs) of fat. In this example, a female who is five feet tall might weigh 205 lbs or more.

When put on very low-calorie, medically monitored diets of 800 calories per daywhich believe it or not is the common medical treatment at bariatric centers in the United Statesthe individuals lost a massive amount of weight. On average, about 40 lbs or more is lost in an approximate 12-week treatment period.

Here is the problem, though. That weight loss is not only coming from fat. In this example, the 40-lb weight loss is usually about 75% fat and about 25% muscle.

That 25% loss of muscle mass is not desirable; and for this reason, new research, including my own, seeks ways to modify these medically supervised, very low-calorie diets to get the most weight loss from fat while keeping as much muscle as possible, Professor Ormsbee said.

Keep in mind that an 800-calorie diet is only recommended under medical supervision. For the average person, Professor Ormsbee suggests dietary strategies to improve weight loss without sacrificing muscle.

This includes regular exercise and some specific dietary habits, such as increasing protein intake. Regardless, when it comes to energy balance, we should pay attention to how many calories we eat and drink to begin losing or gaining weight, and the patterns may surprise you.

Lets start with a simple question: How many calories do you need to cut from your diet to lose weight? Taking it one step farther, how many calories will it take to lose just one pound?

For years, textbooks and experts have asserted that one pound of fat is equivalent to 3,500 calories. Thus, if you aim to lose one pound of fat per week by modifying your diet alone and not considering exercise, then you would eat 500 less calories per day for one week. Thats pretty easy to wrap your mind around; just skip a daily dessert or an extra serving at dinner.

You might start thinking that if you eat 500 calories less per day and lose one pound per week, you could up this to a reduction of 1,000 calories per day and lose two to three lbs per week. However, the more is better mantra does not always suit us well with diet and exercise.

Recall the example about weight loss coming from both fat and muscle. It turns out that if your energy deficit is over about 1,000 calories per day, it is generally not well tolerated. This is due to many factors, but primarily when you drop your calories by too much, you will also lose musclewhich you do not want.

Too great a calorie deficit also runs a greater risk of missing out on key nutrients, like your vitamins and minerals, and you would likely see your energy levels drop and your fatigue increase. Not to mention, youll probably feel hungry.

One myth that has arisen from this 3,500-calorie rule is that weight will simply continue to drop at the same rate, otherwise known as the linear model of weight loss. In an article in the International Journal of Obesity, the authors studied the accuracy of the 3,500-calorie rule. As it turns out, the rule actually overestimates weight loss, meaning that 3,500 calories may translate to less than one pound lost.

Thus, an update was made. The new model for weight loss, called the thermodynamic model or simply the dynamic model of weight loss, takes into consideration your baseline body composition, age, height, sex, and degree of calorie restriction. This model results in a curvilinear pattern of weight loss over time rather than the traditional linear model of weight loss, and is much more accurate in actual trends for weight loss.

Michael Ormsbee is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food, and Exercise Sciences and Interim Director of the Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine in the College of Human Sciences at Florida State University. He received his MS in Exercise Physiology from South Dakota State University and his PhD in Bioenergetics from East Carolina University.

The Taliban militants of Afghanistan have grown richer and more powerful since their fundamentalist Islamic regime was toppled by U.S. forces in 2001. In the fiscal year that ended in March 2020, the Taliban reportedly brought in US$1.6 billion, according to Mullah Yaqoob, son of the late Taliban spiritual leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, who revealed the Talibans income sources in a confidential report commissioned by NATO and later obtained by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. In comparison, the Afghan government brought in $5.55 billion during the same period. The government is now in peace talks with the Taliban, seeking to end their 19-year insurgency.I study the Talibans finances as an economic policy analyst at the Center for Afghanistan Studies. Heres where their money comes from. 1. Drugs $416 millionAfghanistan accounted for approximately 84% of global opium production over the past five years, according to the United Nations World Drug Report 2020. Much of those illicit drug profits go to the Taliban, which manage opium in areas under their control. The group imposes a 10% tax on every link in the drug production chain, according to a 2008 report from the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit, an independent research organization in Kabul. That includes the Afghan farmers who cultivate poppy, the main ingredient in opium, the labs that convert it into a drug and the traders who move the final product out of country. 2. Mining $400 million to $464 millionMining iron ore, marble, copper, gold, zinc and other metals and rare-earth minerals in mountainous Afghanistan is an increasingly lucrative business for the Taliban. Both small-scale mineral-extraction operations and big Afghan mining companies pay Taliban militants to allow them to keep their businesses running. Those who dont pay have faced death threats.According to the Talibans Stones and Mines Commission, or Da Dabaro Comisyoon, the group earns $400 million a year from mining. NATO estimates that figure higher, at $464 million up from just $35 million in 2016. 3. Extortion and taxes $160 millionLike a government, the Taliban tax people and industries in the growing swath of Afghanistan under their control. They even issue official receipts of tax payment.Taxed industries include mining operations, media, telecommunications and development projects funded by international aid. Drivers are also charged for using highways in Taliban-controlled regions, and shopkeepers pay the Taliban for the right to do business. The group also imposes a traditional Islamic form of taxation called ushr which is a 10% tax on a farmers harvest and zakat, a 2.5% wealth tax. According to Mullah Yaqoob, tax revenues which may also be considered extortion bring in around $160 million annually. Since some of those taxed are poppy growers, there could be some financial overlap between tax revenue and drug revenue. 4. Charitable donations $240 millionThe Taliban receive covert financial contributions from private donors and international institutions across the globe. Many Taliban donations are from charities and private trusts located in Persian Gulf countries, a region historically sympathetic to the groups religious insurgency. Those donations add up to about $150 million to $200 million each year, according to the Afghanistan Center for Research and Policy Studies. These charities are on the U.S. Treasurey Departments list of groups that finance terrorism. Private citizens from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran and some Persian Gulf nations also help finance the Taliban, contributing another $60 million annually to the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani Network, according to American counterterrorism agencies. 5. Exports $240 millionIn part to launder illicit money, the Taliban import and export various everyday consumer goods, according to the United Nations Security Council. Known business affiliates include the multinational Noorzai Brothers Limited, which imports auto parts and sells reassembled vehicles and spare automobile parts. The Talibans net income from exports is thought to be around $240 million a year. This figure includes the export of poppy and looted minerals, so there may be financial overlap with drug revenue and mining revenue. 6. Real estate $80 millionThe Taliban own real estate in Afghanistan, Pakistan and potentially other countries, according to Mullah Yaqoob and the Pakistani TV Channel SAMAA. Yaqoob told NATO annual real estate revenue is around $80 million. 7. Specific countriesAccording to BBC reporting, a classified CIA report estimated in 2008 that the Taliban had received $106 million from foreign sources, in particular from the Gulf states.Today, the governments of Russia, Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are all believed to bankroll the Taliban, according to numerous U.S. and international sources. Experts say these funds could amount to as much as $500 million a year, but it is difficult to put an exact figure on this income stream. Building a peacetime budgetFor nearly 20 years, the Talibans great wealth has financed mayhem, destruction and death in Afghanistan. To battle its insurgency, the Afghan government also spends heavily on war, often at the expense of basic public services and economic development.[Deep knowledge, daily. Sign up for The Conversations newsletter.]A peace agreement in Afghanistan would allow the government to redirect its scarce resources. The government might also see substantial new revenue flow in from legal sectors now dominated by the Taliban, such as mining. Stability is additionally expected to attract foreign investment in the country, helping the government end its dependence on donors like the United States and the European Union. There are many reasons to root for peace in war-scarred Afghanistan. Its financial health is one of them. This article is republished from The Conversation, a nonprofit news site dedicated to sharing ideas from academic experts.
