Intermittent fasting is one of the more popular (and argument-provoking) diet trends of recent yearsit was even the most-searched diet term on Google last year. Its not hard to guess what it entails: abstaining from food, or at least most food, for specific intervals. It's been taken up by everyone from Silicon Valley biohackers to TikTok models. Diets based on it have been touted for a huge list of benefits: It might be good for weight loss. It might work to balance out ones blood sugar. Some even follow it for mental clarity, the idea being that by not eating a big lunch, youll avoid the grogginess that hits a couple hours later.

But what can anyone legitimately expect to gain from taking on an intermittent fasting diet? Those benefits are all related: The number one reason people do it is for weight loss, but when you lose weight, that helps lower blood pressure, which helps to prevent heart disease and diabetes, says Krista Varady, nutrition professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

As GQ has explored before, paying attention to when you eat is just as important as what youre eating, and intermittent fasting is one of the simplest ways to start experimenting with a diet.

The Fast Track

When it comes to the specifics of intermittent fasting, there are generally three different approaches to take. Some people opt for alternate-day fasting: Eat whatever you want on off days, but limit calories to around 500 on fasting days. Some try the 5:2 diet, which involves fasting during the week and making the weekend your off days.

But taking entire days off is on the extreme end of things. According to Varady, the most popular kind of intermittent fasting is time-restricted eating. In the most popular form, eating is limited to an eight-hour window each day. Depending on your schedule, you can put the window wherever you want, although Varady says making it from noon to 8 p.m. is generally easiest for most people.

The minute you take dinner out, people get upset about it, because then they cant socialize with friends or eat with family, she says.

The beauty of the diet is that it doesn't specify what you should be eating, only when. Pick a schedule that works for you and there isn't much more to it than that. Many people find that easier than cutting out certain foods or counting calories. And while this isn't explicitly the goal, Varady's research indicates that people end up cutting out anywhere from 300 to 500 calories each day without counting them. She also finds that about 80 percent of people who try a time-restricted eating fast say they plan on continuing it.

Why Eating Less Means More

Typical Western diets are heavy on simple carbohydrates. (Think of the sandwiches or slices of pizza you might eat for lunch or dinner.) These food items provide the glucose the body uses as fuel. But spiking glucose is accompanied by a rise in insulin, which the body uses to process blood sugars. Thats often what causes a sluggish feeling as the day goes on.

According to proponents of the diet, fasting for 16 hours evens these spikes out and recalibrates the body. A longer fast leads to lower blood pressure, and several studies show that time-restricted eating is associated with better cardiovascular health because of what the body ends up burning for fuel. In the absence of glucose, the body switches to burning fat, and as the body releases more fat into the bloodstream, the level of insulin drops accordingly. This, in turn, provides a needed break for cells to rest. In effect, fasting tricks the body into thinking its time to conserve its resources.

At the end of this period, the participants had lost an average of 34% body fat.

Weight Gain and Stress Eating Are Downside of Pandemic Life – The New York Times

This was such a drastic and abrupt change to everyones daily life that we needed to see what was going on, said Dr. Flanagan. We wanted to put some data to the anecdotal behaviors we were seeing.

From April through early May, about 7,750 people, most of them from the United States but also from countries such as Canada, Australia and Britain, completed the survey. The average age of the respondents was 51, and a majority were women. Based on their body mass indexes, about a third of the people were overweight, a third were obese, and a third were considered normal weight.

The researchers found that most people became more sedentary, which they said was probably related to less daily commuting and more time spent indoors. But even when people did engage in structured exercise, it tended to be at lower intensity levels compared to before the pandemic. Many people also said they had given in to their food cravings: Consumption of sugar sweetened beverages and other sugary snack foods, for example, went up.

That might explain another finding: About 27 percent of people said they had gained weight after the initial lockdowns went into effect. The figure was even higher among people classified as obese: About 33 percent said that they had gained weight, compared to 24.7 percent of people considered normal weight. People who gained weight also had the largest declines in physical activity.

There were some bright spots in the findings. About 17 percent of the study population actually lost weight during the pandemic; perhaps not surprisingly, they tended to be people who increased their physical activity levels and improved their diets. And despite snacking on more junk foods, many people showed an increase in their healthy eating scores, a measure of their overall diet quality, which includes things like eating more fruits and fewer fried foods. The researchers said that the overall improvements in diet appeared to be driven by the fact that the lockdowns prompted people to cook, bake and prepare more food at home. Other recent surveys have also shown a sharp rise in home cooking and baking this year, with many people saying they are discovering new ingredients and looking for ways to make healthier foods.

But social isolation can take a toll on mental wellness, and that was evident in the findings. On average, people reported significantly higher anxiety levels. About 20 percent said that their symptoms, such as experiencing dread and not being able to control or stop their worrying, were severe enough to interfere with their daily activities. About 44 percent of people said that their sleep had also worsened during the pandemic. People on average reported going to bed about an hour later than usual and waking up roughly an hour later than usual. Only 10 percent of people said that their sleep had improved since the pandemic began.

The greatest spikes in anxiety occurred among people who are obese. It was unclear why exactly, but one reason may have been concerns about the virus. The survey took place at a time when studies were first beginning to show that excess weight puts people at a much higher risk of being hospitalized with Covid-19. We dont have data to back this up, but our hypothesis is there was a lot more anxiety about their own health, Dr. Flanagan said. A heightened fear of the virus would most certainly increase their anxiety levels.

Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) is a large predatory fish that many people around the world consume.

Its characteristic feature is a sword-like bill, which is where its name comes from. Its also one of the fastest known fish in the ocean.

Swordfish has a distinctive nutritional profile and provides many health-promoting effects. However, consuming it too frequently or in large amounts may lead to mercury toxicity (1).

This article reviews the health effects of eating swordfish, including its benefits and downsides, and how much is safe to eat.

Swordfish is rich in multiple essential nutrients.

Essential nutrients are ones your body cannot produce, so you need to get them from food.

A 3-ounce (85-gram) serving of cooked swordfish provides (2):

Swordfish is exceptionally high in selenium. This essential trace mineral is important for human health due to its role in thyroid and bone metabolism, immunity, heart health, and male fertility, among other functions (3, 4).

Its also a great source of vitamin D, a key vitamin for bone health that has also proven beneficial for immunity, heart health, and asthma (5, 6).

Additionally, swordfish is a fatty fish with high amounts of the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

EPA and DHA are also essential and known to protect against heart and inflammatory diseases and help improve brain health (7, 8).

A 3-ounce (85-gram) serving provides 764 mg of EPA and DHA combined. The 20152020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend consuming an average of 250 mg per day. Thus, swordfish is a very rich source (2, 9).

Swordfish is rich in essential nutrients necessary for health, including selenium and omega-3 fatty acids.

Swordfish may provide multiple health benefits, mostly due to its high omega-3, selenium, and vitamin D contents.

High blood pressure and cholesterol levels are both risk factors for heart disease.

Omega-3 fatty acids found in swordfish may positively influence blood pressure and cholesterol levels, especially in people with a preexisting heart condition. They dont appear to interfere with prescription drugs (10, 11, 12).

Research shows that EPA and DHA may lower your blood pressure by decreasing your heart rate and improving blood vessel function and elasticity (11, 13).

They may also lower your blood triglycerides by approximately 2030% and help prevent blood clots from forming and clogging your arteries (11).

However, they may increase LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, a risk factor for heart disease (11).

Additionally, the vitamin D in swordfish may lower your blood pressure and risk of heart attack. In fact, one study found that people with vitamin D deficiency had a 60% higher risk of heart disease (14, 15, 16, 17, 18).

Evidence suggests that taking vitamin D supplements may lower systolic blood pressure (the top number of a blood pressure reading) by 26 mm Hg. It may do this by interacting with multiple systems in your body, including your kidneys and endocrine system (19).

Swordfish may help protect against cancer thanks to its omega-3, vitamin D, and selenium contents.

Inflammation is a predisposing factor for cancer, and omega-3s and vitamin D have anti-inflammatory properties. Studies suggest that both nutrients may help protect against colorectal cancer (14, 20).

Both nutrients may prevent cancerous cells from reproducing and induce their death. Additionally, vitamin D may help stop the growth of new blood vessels that feed those cells (14, 20).

You can safely refrigerate raw swordfish for 2 days before cooking it, or you can store it frozen for up to 3 months. Once cooked, it may keep for up to 4 days in the fridge or 6 months in the freezer (40).

DENVER (CBS4) If youre feeling like holiday treats are getting your healthy habits off track, you arent the only one. A study from the New England Journal of Medicine estimates most adults gain close to a pound during the holiday season.

Certified Health Coach Erica Ballard says its easy to overindulge during holidays like Thanksgiving. But that doesnt mean you cant quickly get back on track.

Thanksgiving is one day out of 365 days. So, if you overindulge, you just have to know that its not going to affect your overall health, says Ballard. If you did it, give yourself some grace. Stop beating yourself up for what you did, and instead focus on what you can do today and moving forward to improve your overall health.

Before Christmas comes around, Ballard does have some tips to avoid the temptation of treats. She says the first thing to do is give yourself permission to overindulge. That way it helps take your mind off sweets.

Now if you do overindulge, one of the things you can do is an intermittent fast for 14 to 16 hours after you have sweet treats, pies, and cakes. That will give your body enough time to get the sugar and toxins out of you and reset it, so you dont overindulge for multiple days on end.

She says drinking water is also key. Water will also help flush out the sugar and toxins, while helping you stay healthy.

Doing that is going to help you not only move those items out of your body but also make you less hungry throughout the day.

With the New Year just around the corner, many people may be making resolutions to lose weight. So how do you make a weight loss plan that lasts? Ballard says dont only make one big goal to lose a massive amount of weight. She says its important to set smaller goals along the way.

Theres a reason businesses create annual goals and quarterly goals. Those quarterly goals let them know if theyre on track. In order for us to create these resolutions, we want to create a big, lofty goal but we also want to set quarterly goals every three months so we can check in on our progress.

Ballard says another key to making a successful weight loss resolution is to start small, by creating good daily habits and routines. Instead of saying you will work out 45 minutes daily and eat clean five days a week, start with a 20 minute workout and a healthy meal one day a week.

Doing that will set the routine up in your body so that its used to doing that, and then the more you do it, the more your body will crave it.
