Everything You Need to Know About Boosting Your Gut Health – The Beet

Posted: November 28, 2020 at 7:52 am

Heads up to plant eaters: Sugary foods and stress arent a good combo for your gut. Get the scoop on how these factors and others can put that gut out of balance, possibly driving you to have too much of a fungus called Candida.

Time for some truth-telling: While I follow a whole-food, plant-only diet, Ive let my habits slip. As this pandemic has raged, so, too, has my sweet tooth, and even though everything Im indulging in is vegan, Ive nonetheless splurged more than normal. Add to that increased stress, which has caused numerous sleepless nights, and although Im not battling any health woes, have maintained a normal weight, and am still an avid exerciser, I knew there would be consequences.

So I wasnt surprised when a gut microbiome test (where you sendan excrement sample through the mail to be analyzed) revealed the effects: The balance between my bacteria and fungi was off, and I was veering higher in a fungus called Candida. That left me wondering: How common is this, and what can you do if you suspect Candida is a problem?

Although your gut is composed of trillions of microorganisms, all of which make up your gut microbiome, bacteria and fungi consist of the majority. When theyre in balance, they work together to break down food, supporting each other while benefiting you as the host, says Mahmoud Ghannoum, Ph.D., M.B.A., co-founder and chief scientific officer of BIOHMHealth, director of the Center for Medical Mycology at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, and author of Total Gut Balance.

Beneficial bacteria (like Saccharomyces, Bifidobacterium, and Lactobacillus) act as a police officer, keeping bad guys or pathogens under control, producing small molecules that play a role in supporting your immunity and sending signals to the brain that aid in stress and mood. Meanwhile, fungi can support gut health by regulating immune responses throughout the body. When the two are in harmony, the bacteria outnumber the fungi so that you should have higher levels of ones like Saccharomyces and lower levels of Candida.

Yet when theres an imbalance in your microbiome, whats called dysbiosis, those bacteria and fungi still work together but against your detriment, Ghannoum says. The fungi gain the ability to invade their host (aka you) while the bacteria develop an antibacterial tolerance. The result? Unwanted gastrointestinal symptoms as well as inflammation.

While there are numerous fungi that might be out of whack, Candida is often the main one. Its responsible for the majority of fungal infections worldwide and is the third most common infection in hospitals, Ghannoum says. Based on data from the BIOHM gut test, about 94 percent of individuals have Candida in their gut, and although studies to determine how common Candida overgrowth is are lacking, BIOHM data shows that 18.5 percent of people have Candida overgrowth.

Numerous factors may contribute to gut imbalance, but the most impactful is sugar, especially when referring to Candida. Candida overgrowth is most often triggered by excess sugar in the American diet, says Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., Hawaii-based board-certified internist and author of From Fatigued to Fantastic and The Complete Guide to Beating Sugar Addiction.

The average individual consumes 18 percent of his or her calories from sugar, eating a whopping 140 pounds of sugar every year. That sets up the perfect condition in your gut for yeast-like Candida to grow. Yeast grows by fermenting sugar, leaving millions of people who have had their gut transformed to a fermentation tank, Teitelbaum says.

And it doesnt matter if the sugar occurs naturally or is in organic, junk, or even vegan food. You could be vegan and slug 36 ounces of soda a day, consuming 27 spoons of sugar, and your gut will still suffer. If its fermentable, it increases Candida growth, Teitelbaum says.

While eating a sugar-rich diet can lead to Candida overgrowth, there are other factors involved. Lifestyle habits like having elevated stress levels and not logging adequate sleep can cause an imbalance, Ghannoum says. Antibiotics, immune system problems, gut permeability issues, and vitamin deficiencies may even set you up for trouble.

So how do you know if youve got issues in your gut balance? While you can undergo a stool test, Teitelbaum says the best way is to look for digestive symptoms. If you have gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation, that suggests a microbial imbalance in your gut, he says, adding that Candida is the most common cause of these symptoms. In fact, if one of his patients has irritable bowel syndrome and/or chronic nasal congestion, which can happen in tandem, hell suspect Candida overgrowth until proven otherwise.

You can also use the dysbiosis risk checklist provided by Ghannoum (see the bottom of the article). Note that its not meant to diagnose an issue and just because youre at higher risk doesnt mean you have it now. You may have suffered from microbiome imbalance in the past thats now resolved, he says. For instance, if you were born by C-section and were on antibiotics as a child, you may have not have had as diverse or robust a microbiome, but if youve lived healthy for many years, you may have overcome that microbiome imbalance.

If you dont get this type of overgrowth under control, you can suffer yeast-related health issues like athletes foot, thrush, and vaginitis. Candida can also cause or worsen many other health issues like antibiotic-associated diarrhea, IBD and possibly IBS, Candida arthritis, allergies, inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, and serious infections like those on the skin and in the kidneys, Ghannoum says.

Because so much of Candida overgrowth depends on what you put in your mouth, making dietary changes is your first step to getting that gut in balance. The obvious switch? Cut your sugar intake and avoid fruit juices, which have similar amounts of sugar as soda, Teitelbaum says. Instead of drinking the fruit juice, eat the whole fruit so choose oranges over orange juice, for instance.

Along with all sugar (although Ghannoum notes that maple syrup and honey may have benefits for the gut), avoid alcohol. And if youre not yet fully plant-based, ditch high-fat red meat, processed meat, and full-fat dairy products.

Then load your diet with polyphenols, which you can find in vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. Polyphenols feed the bacteria that keeps Candida under control, Ghannoum says. At the same time, increase plant-based proteins and fats and make sure youre eating plenty of anti-inflammatory foods, especially cruciferous vegetables. Ginger, turmeric, deglychrrhizinated licorice, and marshmallow root can also help fight inflammation.

What Ghannoum calls microbiome power foods should also be part of your diet. They include green tea, sweet potatoes, pistachios, onions, brown rice, mushrooms, and fermented foods. Just dont overdo the carbohydrates or excessive carbs could wind up feeding Candida. Instead, stick with one serving of whole-food carbs at each meal.

Supplements may even help. Ghannoum recommends three: A multivitamin; probiotic with S. boulardi, a fungal strain that works to balance Candida levels and support overall microbiome health; and anti-fungal supplements, notably those that include garlic, polyphenols and grapeseed extract.

And of course, youll need to make some lifestyle changes. Get that stress under control, and while its impossible to avoid all antibiotics, avoid unnecessary ones, which can open the door for Candida excess, Ghannoum says. Although you shouldnt go against your doctors advice, always ask if an antibiotic is truly necessary.

With all of these strategies in place, you can expect to see changes in any symptoms youre having within two to four weeks.

Use this checklist created by Ghannoum to determine if youre at greater risk for dysbiosis. The more questions you answer 'yes' to, the higher your risk for dysbiosis may be. As always, consult your healthcare professional to learn more.

What do fishers eat? Theres only one way to know for sure – MPNnow.com

Posted: November 28, 2020 at 7:52 am

Messenger Post Media| MPNnow

CANADICE A scalpel in her right hand, Chloe Bliss begins cutting into the brownish-pink organ she holds in her left.

This is part of her job as a work-study student at Finger Lakes Community College. Her boss is professor John Van Niel, coordinator of the colleges fish and wildlife technology program. The work entails studying the stomach contents of fishers, a carnivorous North American mammal related to the weasel.

These solitary animals are fairly small, weighing up to 14 pounds, and have long bushy tails. Trapping for fishers is allowed in the fall in most of the state, largely in the Adirondacks, Hudson Valley and North Country, with a brief season in the Southern Tier.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation dropped off 500 frozen fisher stomachs at FLCC last year as part of an effort to gather data on New Yorks fisher population. Fur trappers provided the carcasses so the DEC could study the teeth (to determine age), uteruses of females (to see how many kits they had) and the stomachs (to find out what they really eat).

Van Niel and his students can answer the last question: Fishers eat smaller mammals, as you might expect, but plenty of berries, fish, frogs, birds and, it seems, other fishers.

The students are earning a paycheck, learning research procedures and gathering data for further study or decisions about wildlife management. They understand their work will long outlast their time at FLCC.

Its like a good kind of pressure, said Bliss co-worker, Jessica Froebel. Weve added to what the DEC can use and thats important.

DEC biologist Scott Smith saidthe work of Bliss, Froebel and other students before them saves DEC biologists and technicians untold hours and provides training for the next generation of wildlife professionals.

Having this snapshot of a fisher diet will allow the DEC to identify any potential difference in feeding strategies between historic fisher range and the more recently occupied habitats across central and western New York, Smith said. Fisher were once considered a creature of the big woods, but in recent times have been found to excel in non-traditional habitats of mixed agriculture and even suburbia.

The information has value to non-scientists, too. The students have not found evidence that fishers eat domesticated animals like chickens or pets.

We often hear concerns from the public about the potential impact of fisher on other species like turkey and gray squirrel, Smith added. It's important to know for a fact what fisher are preying on. This study is showing that fisher rarely, if ever, consume wild turkey.

Fishers are known for their strategy in attacking porcupines they go for the face first to incapacitate but the project results suggest they may not resort to this tactic very often.

The data collection process starts with thawed organs, numbered in batches of 10, in an outbuilding at the FLCC Muller Field Station at the south end of Honeoye Lake. Froebel and Bliss open the stomachs, then remove and rinse the contents in strainers. They have gotten used to the smell, they said, except for the instances when a fisher has preyed on skunk. Next, they place the contents on numbered petri dishes and take a look under a microscope.

Im seeing a lot of fur here, Bliss said, as she pickedthrough the material. There are two different animals in here, based on the feet I found, and theres some red fur, possibly a squirrel.

Looking at another small pinkish-red mass, Bliss continued, I can tell this is a head because I can see the jawbone here.

The students identify the undigested materials using field guides and information they have learned from doing this over and over again. The contents of each stomach arematched to anumber and will be uploaded into a database that also contains the sex, age and location and date of capture. Since trapping is permitted only in the fall, the results are limited to the animals fall diet.

Van Niel checks their work, but even he gets stumped sometimes. Its humbling, he said. I guess its a good thing I like learning because Im still doing a lot of it.

Van Niel, a Seneca Falls resident, is a 1983 graduate of FLCC and holds a doctorate in teaching and curriculum from the University of Rochester. He teaches black bear management and wildlife management in addition to serving as director for both of FLCCs field stations, the 48-acre Muller property in Canadice and the 85-acre East Hill Campus in Naples. He has been teaching at FLCC since 1995.

Bliss, 21, a Canandaigua Academy graduate, will get her FLCC degree in fish and wildlife technology in December. She has a two-year degree in animal management from Niagara County Community College and works part time at Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester.

Froebel, 25, went to Alden High School in Erie County and will graduate with an associate degree in fish and wildlife technology next spring. She plans to use some of the fisher data for a mapping project in her geographic information systems class to see if diet varies by location. She was recently accepted into Cobleskills wildlife management bachelors degree program.

Four others took part in the fisher research in previous semesters.

Jacob Ameele, a 2020 fish and wildlife technology graduate, and Allison Pellett, a 2020 environmental science graduate, were the primary student workers on the project. Courtney Renner, a 2020 environmental science graduate, and Gina DeBlieck, an environmental science major, also contributed to the research. FLCCs conservation degree programs include environmental conservation law enforcement and natural resources conservation.

Bliss and Froebel are enjoying the hands-on aspect of the project and the unpredictable nature of research. Unlike a lab exercise, there is no answer key.

My grandfather used to say, Every day you dont learn something new is a day wasted," Froebel said. This helps me learn something new. You never know what you are going to find.

Courtesy Santiago Potes

In second grade, Santiago Potes walked into Marina Esteva's gifted and talented classroom at Sweetwater Elementary School in Miami, Florida, for the first time.

He was an undocumented immigrant from Colombia who entered the country when he was 4 years old. Esteva said she quickly noticed his intelligence and wanted to nurture him toward success.

Now, Potes is the first Latino DACA recipient to be awarded a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.

On Saturday, the Rhodes Trust announced that Potes, a 2020 graduate of Columbia University in New York, would be one of the 2021 Rhodes Scholars.

Potes traces all his success back to Esteva, the teacher he saw twice a week from second to fifth grade in elementary school.

"She was one of the biggest blessings that I've had in my entire life so far," Potes told CNN's Poppy Harlow.

"My parents didn't go to college. My parents had me when they were 16 years old. So, she really became kind of like my first mother figure actually. She went out of her way to teach me a rigorous education."

That included a lesson about what it meant to be a Renaissance man, a term that young Potes took to heart. In addition to his academic success, Potes is also an accomplished violinist and is fluent -- or near fluent -- in nine languages, one of which is Chinese.

In their announcement, the Rhodes Trust wrote, "Santiago has been a teaching or research assistant for leading professors in physics, philosophy, social psychology and neuroscience, and won numerous college prizes for leadership as well as academic performance. He is widely published on legal issues relating to DACA status, was one of the DACA recipients featured in a brief filed with the Supreme Court to preserve DACA."

"He is so complete. He's a well-rounded human being," Esteva told CNN.

"With the highest moral caliber, with a sense of justice, with a sense of what is excellence, and willing to sacrifice for excellence, not for show, but for excellence itself."

Esteva is a Cuban refugee and immigrant to the United States herself. She said it means even more to have teacher and student both Latino immigrants and refugees, two generations of opportunity and success in the United States.

"I wish there were a larger national conversation about how important elementary school teachers specifically are," Potes said.

He said he would not have reached this level of success if Esteva had not told him from an early age that she believed he could do great things.

For her part, Esteva said she just spotted what was already innately in Potes as a child.

"I planted a seed in fertile soil. You took care of a plant. You are the one who made it possible."

Potes will study contemporary East Asia and international politics at Oxford University with an eye toward working in national security in the United States. His program will begin in October 2021.

Eat 6 times a day to lose weight under this program – WWLTV.com

Posted: November 27, 2020 at 12:58 am

Under the program you are sent 5 packets of fuel per day and then you make a meal on your own.

There's a diet that is helping people lose weight fast. So in February we shot testimonials and a doctor's opinion.

But then the pandemic hit. So did wearing masks. We decided to hold the story. Now we know maintaining a healthy weight is more important than ever, since obesity is a risk factor for severe, even deadly COVID-19.

This plan safely brings the food to your home, and the support can be done virtually for physically distancing.

"I'm at the orthopedist's office for my follow up and I have to get on the scale, and I'm like, 'Wait, what!' It was quite a shock," said Elinor Dorsey, 57, an Optavia coach in Covington.

"People would say, 'No, you won't look good in that because your behind's too big,' or you know it's, 'My face was so fat,'" said Lydia Steele, 57, an Optavia Client.

"I found myself to be in my 50s and the heavy blonde," said Chloe Coombe, 65, an Optavia client and coach.

The three women bonded over a weight loss program that they say took off pounds fast, and was easy to follow.

RELATED: Mackie: Once again Mediterranean diet a winner for weight loss, healthElinor Dorsey says her weight gain happened fairly recently when she fell, broke her arm and needed surgery. It was also around the time she lost her mom.

"It was just a lot more than I even thought. Like it was kind of like what I would weigh when I was pregnant. Like kind of scary, you know," remembers Dorsey.

And then three years ago she heard a friend talk about a weight loss program that focused on health, with some flexibility. Four months later, she took the step.

"I can't tell you what made me pick up the phone this one day, but one day I just knew like something has to give," Dorsey said.

And it did.

"The first week I lost four pounds, which was a lot for somebody five feet four inches." Then the next week I lost two pounds and I remember coming and telling my husband, 'This is going to work. I'm going to reach my goal,'" Dorsey said.

In a little more than three months, she did reach her goal. Twenty-fivepounds were gone, and then to her surprise anothereight came off.

"To do this program for four months and everything needs to be taken in, it was crazy," Dorsey said about her clothes.

Elinor follows Optavia. You eat six times a day, 800 to 1,200 calories total. There's a variety of 60 mini meals or 'fuelings' as they are called, like shakes, bars, soups, biscuits and pudding, to keep your metabolism revved up. There are customized plans but most people are on the 5&1, meaning 5 of those fuelings, bought from the company and delivered to your home, then one lean and green meal, with vegetables and protein to help keep you from losing muscle.

It is low in simple carbs, like sugar and starch. There is free support, a personal coach for counseling, and an extensive online community. Coaches can give advice for what to order if you're going out to eat, and there are numerous shared recipes for lean and green home meals. You're encouraged to drink 64 ounces of water a day and get seven hours of sleep. Elinor had so many people notice her transformation, that she became a coach.

"It keeps me accountable and it's just very rewarding to help somebody with something they're struggling with. I mean, I can't think of a greater way to spend my time," Dorsey said.

"Having a weight loss coach is shown to, is shown to provide the kind of support that most of us need to loose weight, so it is a good thing," explained Dr. Melinda Sothern, of LSU Health Sciences Center School of Public Health.

A health, exercise and weight loss expert Dr. Sothern says if you stick to commercial weight loss programs, they can be effective, especially over the short term. Long-term weight loss is more rare, but there is science suggesting that online and personal coaching, like Optavia has, lead to weight loss success two years later. Dr. Sothern also points out the benefit of planned meals and snacks.

"There's numerous studies going back decades to show that if the food is packaged for you, and it's delivered to you, and you don't have to think, and you don't have to shop, and you don't have to cook, you're more likely to follow the plan, and you're more likely to lose weight," explained Dr. Sothern.

Another benefit: feeling satiated.

"So when you remove the carbohydrates and the sugar, and replace them with proteins and fats, you're going to feel full faster," said Dr. Sothern.

"Well after one week I wasn't hungry. My one complaint was why do I have to keep eating," said Steele.

Registered nurses Lydia Steele and Chloe Coombe asked Elinor to coach them. Lydia remembers being overweight as far back as grade school.

"Somebody said as I was eating Cheetos, 'Well that's why she's so fat," remembers Steele.

She is a type 1 diabetic and found that the 5&1 program did not work well for her, so Elinor got advice and recommended the 3&3 program.

"After that, the weight just started falling off, so within, I would say, two months, two and a half months, I had lost 20 pounds," said Steele.

"The first three days were hard because you're just starting something new. You're getting rid of sugars, and within a month, I had lost the prescribed amount of weightthat they say that you will, if you stay on the program. And within about four months, I had lost 45 pounds," said Coombe.

The women say when they put some pounds back on, they just get back on the program, but they do that before any weight gain gets out of control. Chloe's son rewarded her success with a trip overseas to visit him.

"They call it habits of health. I prefer to call it, not habits, but decisions. That's a stronger word. It is for my health, and it is for the rest of my life," said Coombe.

"The program is all about building new habits and it's one habit at a time, and it's replacing old habits with new habits," said Dorsey.

And Elinor takes her role as a coach seriously.

"You're sharing private things, like for instance, I have a book where people's weights are written down. If this house was on fire, that's the first things I'm grabbing," said Dorsey.

And remember the shock Elinor felt getting weighed at her doctor's office? Well, not after she lost weight.

"I thought I was going to cry.I was like, 'I did it!'So,I mean, I know how people feel, likeI feel emotional evensaying that, but it's true," Dorsey said with her eyes tearing up.

Same thing happened to Lydia when she got weighed in the doctor's office.

"And I just smiled because I knew I don't have to worry about this. And the nurse turned and just, her mouth just dropped," remembers Steele.

Oh, and remember the grammar school classmate who called Lydia fat as she ate Cheetos? Well recently, after more than 40 years,Lydiaapproached him.

"I said, 'Do you remember when you said that to me, because it lasted with me.' And he said, 'I am so embarrassed. I am so embarrassed. Now look at me and look at you,'" Steele recalls.

And the three women are not looking back. Most of their larger clothes are out the house for good.

The packaged foods cost around $400 a month and are delivered to your home. The personal coach and online help is free.

Higher COVID-19 Risk Leading More Patients With Obesity To Weight Loss Surgery – CBS Boston

Posted: November 27, 2020 at 12:58 am

BOSTON (CBS) Kayla Northam, a nurse at Faulkner Hospital, knows first-hand what can happen when patients with obesity are hospitalized with coronavirus.

These people are getting sicker, they are in the hospital longer, she told WBZ-TV. Unfortunately, a lot of patients who pass away, its because of their obesity and other risk factors.

Weighing nearly 300 pounds after college, she also knows what it is like to live with that risk factor.

I couldnt walk up a flight of stairs without stopping to catch my breath, she remembered. They told me I probably wouldnt be able to conceive naturally.

But today shes a healthy weight and mom to baby Jonathan, thanks to bariatric surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. Kayla says the surgery changed everything about her life, including her ability to work with Covid-19 patients without worrying about her own added risk.

I would be a lot more afraid than I am, she said.

Kaylas doctor at Mass General, Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, says shes seeing twice as many patients now as she did prior to the pandemic. Some of them are brand new patients and others are patients who have long resisted the idea of surgery.

Many of them are stating that the reason why they are making that change really has to do with Covid, she said.

Bariatric surgery is not a quick fix, but the weight loss that results can eliminate other risk factors like high blood pressure and diabetes.

Kayla understands surgery can be scary, but for her, the benefits have been life-changing.

I dont know if I would have been the nurse I am today, who is physically able to do those things to take care of my patients and I wouldnt have had my son, who I love very much.

Billboards, beef, beans, and one rancher’s 125-pound weight loss – Fence Post

Posted: November 27, 2020 at 12:58 am

In Nebraskas capital city, two illuminated billboards will soon be in place, asking Gov. Pete Ricketts to choose a plant-based diet for the residents of his state. The billboards, paid for by Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine read, Governor Ricketts: Can Nebraska Switch to a Safer Food Supply Like Beans Over Beef? Ricketts said hes not swayed.

This is PETA masquerading as respectable doctors to push their anti-animal agriculture agenda, Ricketts said. Its ridiculous if you look at the value of beef. For example, 3 ounces of beef is the same amount of protein as three cups of quinoa. I dont know how many people are going to eat three cups of quinoa versus three ounces of beef to get the amount of protein they need in their diet.

Beef is one of the most nutritionally dense foods we have and is a great part of a healthy diet and to suggest that we should get rid of it is inexplicable, he said. In Nebraska, in particular, it is a huge part of our economy.

In a complaint that was sent to Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services the group requested that the state support the transition of meatpacking facilities to cleaner, safer facilities that produce plant-based protein and that the state report new cases of COVID-19 at meatpacking facilities.

Ricketts said the groups request for subsidies for plant-based protein production, something he said is akin to the government picking winners and losers, is fundamentally wrong.

These people are Socialists, he said. They want big government intervention to tell private companies what to do and thats a Socialist mentality. If the market rises and shows increased demand for plant-based food then thats consumers asking for it and thats where we as a state and as beef producers need to educate people. Beef is our biggest single industry in Nebraska and we think we have the best beef in the world right here. We need to promote it and were willing to do that.

Ricketts said hes not planning to respond to the group but did tout beefs nutritional value during a press conference this week.

LIVING PROOF

On a cattle ranch on the West Coast, Kiah Twisselman is 125 pounds lighter than she was late in 2018, and said beef remains her favorite healthy food. A sixth generation cattle rancher, she said having the opportunity to promote beef is an opportunity she doesnt take for granted.

In 2018, Twisselman was working as the director of consumer affairs for the Kentucky Beef Council, on behalf of the checkoff. Her role put her on the consumer-facing side of the industry, representing the states producers in media interviews and working with influencers. One of the programs she led was the nutrition program and she spoke to dietetics groups, hosted farm tours, and spoke to various groups about beefs role in a healthy diet.

I knew what I was saying was truth, was factual, was backed up by science, I believed in beefs nutrition but I felt like such a hypocrite, she said. I felt like I was doing a disservice to the beef industry at the time because I personally wasnt a vision of health.

She said she remembers looking out at a group of registered dieticians and wondering who among them would listen to her, a woman without credentials who didnt look healthy.

Later that year, she caught a flight and couldnt buckle her seatbelt, something that had happened before. The flight attendant asked whether she needed an extender and she took it, embarrassed and ashamed. She had picked up a copy of Rachel Hollis book, Girl, Wash Your Face, and said she buried her face in it for the flight.

The book encouraged her to make five changes drink more water, move for 30 minutes daily, wake up one hour earlier, give up one food, and write down things youre grateful for. Incorporating beef in her diet, though, is one thing that remained. Despite how much she enjoyed her job, she returned to California to be closer to her family ranch and continued her health journey there.

When people talk about whats the best diet or the healthiest diet, the best diet for anybody is one they can stick with, she said. I dont think telling anybody to fear foods or to reduce certain foods or to eliminate certain foods. It isnt helpful. I dont think we should tell anybody there are good foods and bad foods, I think its more about how to honor your body with food choices that make you feel good and that are foods that taste good.

Beefs nutrition speaks for itself, she said. Theres research out there that touts beefs benefits. Its the most complete protein out there, you get half your daily protein in one 3-ounce serving of beef. Its big nutrition in a small package, youre getting zinc, iron, protein, B vitamins, and 10 essential vitamins and nutrients in less than 200 calories per serving. Its great nutrition that you cant beat and it doesnt compare to anything else.

Shaming someone for their food choices, she said, isnt helpful and if someone is going to make a change to improve their health, it has to be something they enjoy. She said people should have permission to enjoy beef for all of its nutritional value.

Rather than replacing beef, oftentimes with a food that has more calories for the same nutritional benefit, she said she pairs beef with other healthy choices. Twisselman said she learned how to process her emotions in other ways rather than depending on food as an emotional crutch.

This restriction piece is really harmful and perpetuates this diet culture and this cycle of temporary diet fix and diet elimination in order to get a certain result and then falling off the wagon, she said. Its a constant cycle of restrict, overeat.

She said there are no beef dishes or cuts she eliminated during her weight loss journey or now that shes maintaining her loss.

I dont plan to give up cheeseburgers for the rest of my life, so I learned how to eat a cheeseburger in a healthy way that fits into my healthy diet and lifestyle, she said. Now, that being said, I feel like the biggest change for me for all foods, including beef, was just being more mindful of my own hunger cues and portions. So making sure when I eat a meal that includes beef, that Im also pairing it with other healthy foods. Sometimes the No. 1 thing you can do is add more nutritious things in.

She said she loves steak and pairs it with salad and vegetables. Other choices she made include wrapping a burger in lettuce rather than a bun but giving up beef was never part of the healthy plan.

The beautiful thing about beef is that its one of the most versatile foods out there, regardless of the cut, she said. Beef was never the part of the meal that I substituted out for something else.

Twisselman said she knows and understands how personal food choices are. Being a cattle rancher and working in the beef industry, she believes in and loves beef.

We live in a world where people can make different food choices based on their preferred production practices, she said. I dont ever want to shame someone for their food choices, whether its because of their preferred production practices, whether its their taste preferences, or if its how foods make them feel. We are so fortunate to live in a time and a place where we have so many options.

Over the course of a year, she said she lost 103 pounds, and is currently maintaining a 125-pound loss. That being said, she focuses on being healthy rather than being wrapped up in a number on a scale.

She said she always thought her struggle with obesity was a curse but now sees that having a platform to speak to consumers through her work as a life coach and health coach, and through appearances in People Magazine, Womens Health, Access Hollywood, and Good Morning America makes it her greatest blessing. On one of her national television appearances, in fact, the ribbon below her interview proclaimed that beef is her favorite diet food.

I know I can be an example of whats possible, she said. I lost over 125 pounds. Its not about eliminating beef to be healthy.

Weight is normal. Yes, you have read it right. Gaining weight is a normal part of life, like anything else in fact it is a sign of a healthy functioning body. The human body tends to gain weight when it is fed with high-calorie food with little or no activity level involved. Sometimes the weight gain is due to underlying medical conditions. but whatever the reason is, losing weight is extremely difficult for everyone. Just to dodge the whole meal planning, dieting, and exercising, people prefer getting weight loss surgery without evaluating its risks and complications.

It is also common for people to gain weight during holidays or staying at home. Ever since this year has started, the coronavirus pandemic has changed the normal ideas of life. the lockdowns imposed to spread the coronavirus have made a majority of people gain weight and now after spending months in this pandemic, they are trying everything to get rid of this extra weight and failing. Many of them have already considered a weight loss surgery but without going through its risks, it could be a really bad idea.

Losing 5-10 pounds is easy with diet and exercise alone but people who wish to lose more than 10 pounds are likely to look for easy ways and tricks to lose weight without effort.

Diet and exercise are necessary for a healthy life. for weight management, their role cant be ignored as an active life and healthy dietary habits determine the bodys fat accumulation and burning for it.

Weight loss surgery is not one but a number of processes out of which a person is suggested any or a few, by his doctor. The most common of these weight loss processes is a gastric bypass which makes a small pouch next to the stomach helping the body not to absorb a high amount of calories.

The smaller stomach also reduces hunger so a person tends to eat less. Some people also go for a gastric band surgery where the doctor puts an adjustable band on the patients stomach, making him feel fuller while eating less. All these surgeries lead to the same outcome that is weight loss. But which one is suitable for a person requires a careful examination and evaluation of a person before suggesting his surgery.

There are three big questions attached to these surgical weight loss procedures which include;

If a person is overweight it doesnt mean he is entitled to weight loss surgery. In fact, if he is slightly over a normal BMI, he should never op for surgery. Normally people with BMI of 25 or higher are considered overweight but for considering weight loss surgery, one has to be over BMI 40 for making him a suitable candidate. People who are at risk of any disease but have a BMI lesser than 40 are also suitable for surgery. But all this needs careful evaluation made by a doctor.

If there are other alternatives available, surgery is never a recommended idea. after a person goes through the surgery, the risks dont end. Although the extra weight is shed right away but maintaining weight is no less than a hectic thing. Most people fail to maintain their weight even after surgery and end up gaining all the weight which they have shed.

Teaming the trousers with a pair of trainers and a hoodie from her own collection, the 39-year-old star recorded a quick video for her army of fans.

Smiling and with her hair styled into a glamorous bouncy blow dry, Gemma said: "Guys, as you know, I'm bored of saying it, but it is the season to be jolly careful.

"Well what I'm saying is, it is the season to treat yourself like you are pure luxury."

Earlier this week, Gemma exclusively told The Sun Online that she has slightly fallen off the healthy eating wagon during lockdown.

Having moved into London's Corinthia hotel while waiting for her new home to be finished, she admitted to ordering platters of posh cheese and expensive booze to her room.

Gemma said: "Well they have all my requirements of what I like, but I have to say I have been hammering the cheese and red wine in the evening.

"You know what its like, you get a taste of all the different cheeses and you think 'oh Ive got to stop this' but you just cant."

Gemma isn't making herself feel bad, however, as she has taken up cycling to counteract her new midnight snacking habit.

"I get on the bike the next day and it keeps me at bay ... you don't feel so guilty about it," she added.

Meanwhile, Gemma has this week been busy recording her Christmas charity single with Darren Day.

The pair starred in Celebrity Big Brother together and are hoping to secure the festive No1 in the charts with their tune.

She told her Instagram followers: "I'm having a well deserved drink tonight because, not only have I made my music video, I've directed it, I've starred in it, I've sung in it and I'm loving life."

Referencing next week's end to the current national lockdown, Gemma added: "Roll on the 3rd December. Boris, no one is going to see me for dust."

Students navigate dietary restrictions during the Thanksgiving holiday – K-State Collegian

Posted: November 27, 2020 at 12:56 am

For those that celebrate the holiday, Thanksgiving dinner is a meal unlike any other. From the stuffing to the turkey, for many its hard to imagine the holiday without its variety of traditional dishes.

For students that have dietary restrictions though, the holiday presents more challenges to navigate.

Morgan Boyer, sophomore in theatre, has been gluten-free since January, meaning she consumes no wheat, grains or bread products.

This is my first Thanksgiving so Ive been trying to figure it out, Boyer said.

Boyer said her dermatologist recommended she cut gluten out of her diet to help with her psoriasis, and she eventually became intolerant to it.

Were not a dry stuffing family so Im solid for the turkey and a decent number of sides, but the rolls, that cuts deep, Boyer said.

Anna Cochenour, sophomore in medical laboratory sciences, is vegan and more restrictions than Boyer.

I chose to be vegan because I believe your body inherits the energy of food after you consume it, Cochenour said. You literally are what you eat.

Cochenour said she decided to stop eating meat due to concerns with environmental impacts.

I have found my dietary switch to be both beneficial to my mind and body, Cochenour said.

When it comes to sides, vegetables dishes, such as vegan mashed potatoes or soups, are Cochenours go-to. She said it can be hard to keep herself to the strict diet sometimes, but she plans to use tofu to substitute for traditional Thanksgiving meats.

Tofu has also really helped when trying to replace the meats like the turkey or ham, Cochenour said. Tofu turkey is pretty easy to make or a tofu loaf, theyre pretty flavorful.
