The DASH diet is a low fat, low sodium diet that healthcare providers often recommend to help reduce high blood pressure.

Additionally, one review of studies on several commercially available diets found that people on Nutrisystem lost about 4% more weight after 3 months on the program than people who received only diet education or counseling (5).

However, the review could not look at long-term results because all the studies it investigated were less than 1 year in duration.

Its also important to note that these studies looked at the results of other Nutrisystem programs, including Nutrisystem D. They did not specifically investigate the results of Nutrisystem for Men, though these programs are similar.

Nutrisystem appears to help people lose weight over the short term, but these studies didnt investigate long-term results and may have some bias. They also didnt specifically investigate Nutrisystem for Men.

There are several drawbacks to the Nutrisystem for Men program.

One of the Nutrisystem-funded studies noted that men on the program consumed an average of only 1,500 calories per day (4).

While this restriction is likely to result in short-term weight loss, it may not be sustainable for many people and even result in long-term metabolic changes that make it harder to lose weight (6).

In one small study, researchers found that people in a weight loss competition who followed short-term, extremely restrictive diets had a lower metabolic rate even years later, making it harder for them to lose weight and maintain weight loss (6).

A lower metabolic rate means they burned fewer calories at rest. A person with a lower metabolic rate does not burn as many calories per day as someone with a higher metabolic rate.

Another study estimated that people in this weight loss competition consumed an average of 1,300 calories per day and exercised vigorously for about 3 hours per day during the weight loss period (7).

Its important to note that the people who participated in this weight loss competition went through extreme calorie restriction and weight loss over a very short period of time. Thus, the results may not apply to most people who are looking to lose weight.

Excessive calorie restriction may lead to rebound weight gain by causing changes to your hunger hormones that increase your food cravings and desire to eat (8, 9).

When it comes to Nutrisystem in particular, theres a lack of evidence showing long-term outcomes. Few studies have investigated whether people who lost weight on Nutrisystem maintained that weight loss over long periods.

Some studies looked at the results of following Nutrisystem for 46 months. However, many people may find it too expensive or unrealistic to stay on Nutrisystem for Men for that long. That said, you can complete as many cycles of the 4-week program as youd like (3, 4).

Finally, while Nutrisystem-branded foods are formulated to be low in calories and rich in fiber, theyre highly processed. Choosing more whole, minimally processed foods may be better for your overall health (10).

Nutrisystem may be too restrictive, and theres little evidence on long-term weight loss results for participants. The Nutrisystem programs, including Nutrisystem for Men, are also expensive and encourage people to consume highly processed food.

While promises of quick weight loss may seem tempting, some people may not find the Nutrisystem for Men program sustainable over the long term, as it may be overly restrictive.

Even if you see great results after a round or two of the Nutrisystem program, you may regain the weight you lost very quickly after returning to your old eating habits.

For this reason, youll probably have more success with long-term weight loss by making small, sustainable changes to your diet and lifestyle that promote gradual weight loss.

A new study from the University of Warwick and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust, 60-year-old and above obese patients can lose an equivalent weight as younger people do just by changing their lifestyle.

According to a report byScience Daily, the researchers hope that their study will correct the misconceptions society has on the effectiveness of weight loss programs for the elderly, and dispel myths about the benefits of weight loss on older people.

The researchers used an analysis of patient records from hospital-based obesity services in conducting their retrospective study. They published theirfindingsin the journalClinical Endocrinology.

242 patients were randomly selected to participate in the WISDEM-based obesity service between 2005 and 2016. They were divided into two groups for the weight loss they achieved during the program: below 60 years old and those aged 60 to 70.

Their weight was measure before and after lifestyle interventions were administered, and then their percentage of weight loss was calculated. Both groups underwent the same obesity service, wherein those over 60 years old joined the program for an average of 33.6 months while 41.5 months for under 60.

They found that those 60 years old and above reduced average body weight by 7.3% while those under 60 years old reduced an average of 6.9% of their weight.

The program used lifestyle-based changes that are tailored to each participant that focus on their diet, psychological support, and encouragement of physical activity, Science Daily reported

The researchers noted that over 50 comorbidities are present in obese patients can be lessened as they lose weight. These conditions include diabetes, depression and anxiety, osteoarthritis, and many others. Besides, obesity is also linked to high mortality and poor well-being.

Study lead author Thomas Barberfrom the University of Warwick said that weight loss is important no matter what age a person may be as people are likely to develop comorbidities at any age due to obesity.

Since many of these comorbidities are similar to symptoms experienced while aging, it can also be said that age plays a role in having these conditions. That is why weight loss is heightened as people get older and that it is something that people should embrace, Barber said.

Moreover, an 'ageist' perspective on weight loss not being relevant to older people and the misconceptions surrounding it have led many people to discount the many reasons why weight loss is still relevant even in old age.

Barber also said that service providers and policymakers must appreciate the importance of weight loss in obese older people for the well-being of healthy aging. Age should not become a barrier in the clinical decisions on the implementation of lifestyle changes of older people.

In other words, there should be a proactive effort in facilitating services for older patients with obesity to avoid unnecessary neglect due to 'ageist' misconceptions.

The original form of the Mediterranean dietrequires ahigher dietary intake of fruits, vegetables and whole grainsand a lower intake of red meat. This is believed to be the reason why the diet has been linked to a lower riskof coronary heart disease, strokeand diabetes in various studies.

Shai and her co-authors, however, found that an even higher consumption of greenspaired with far less intake of red meat than the traditional form of the diet required were better forthe heart, reducing the cholesterol accumulated in the body.

The main message of this study is that a Mediterranean diet further restricted in red meat consumption and with a parallel increase in green-plantbased protein with high polyphenol and phytosterols content may provide greater cardiometabolic protection compared to a healthy Mediterranean diet and it will aid in reducing LDL-cholesterol," said Shai, a professor of epidemiology and public health at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba, Israel and an adjunct professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

The first group receivedguidance on boosting physical activity as well as advice on following a healthy diet. The second group also received guidance in physical activity, plus advice on following a traditional Mediterraneandiet.

The third group received both, but with a stricter, greener Mediterraneandiet. Their daily menu consisted of 100 grams of frozen Wolffia globosa cubes thatwere taken in the form ofa green plant-based protein shake. The shake was intended to replace animal protein.

According to Shai, Wolffia globosa, also known as duckweed, has been consumed as human food for hundreds of years, mainly in Laos, Vietnam and Thailand, where it is called meat for the poor thanks to its high protein content.

After six months, data analysis revealed that participants who followedeither type of Mediterraneandiet lost more weight than the participants who only received guidelines on a healthy diet.

The ones who didn't follow either diet lost an average of 3.3 pounds (1.5 kilograms), with their waist circumference having shrunk by an average of 4.3 centimeters,Healthline reported. The traditional Mediterranean diet group lost 11.9 pounds (5.4 kilograms), and their waist circumference decreased by6.8 centimeters.

Meanwhile, thegreen Mediterranean diet group lost a total of 13.6 pounds (6.2 kilograms) and had an average of 8.6 centimeters taken off their waist circumference.

Weight loss isn't the only benefit one can reap when following the Meditteranean diet. Additional health benefits include a decreasein diastolic blood pressure and insulin resistance.

Eating early and intermittent fasting do not help with weight loss new research finds – Express

Eating early in the day or eating during specific windows of time has no effect on weight loss. The study has shown this commonly held belief may not be as true as many think.

It also goes against intermittent fasting wisdom, which recommends only eating during restricted hours.

The research will be presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2020.

In the study 41 overweight adults took part. Of these, 21 ate in a time-restricted pattern.

They ate only at certain times and ate almost all their food before 1pm.

The other 20 percent ate a normal times, during a 12-hour window, consuming half of their daily calories after 5pm for the entire 12 weeks.

However, regardless of when they ate the groups both lost weight.

Study author Nisa M. Maruthur, M.D., M.H.S., associate professor of medicine, epidemiology and nursing at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore said "We have wondered for a long time if when one eats during the day affects the way the body uses and stores energy.

"Most prior studies have not controlled the number of calories, so it wasn't clear if people who ate earlier just ate fewer calories.

Age is not a barrier to losing weight, study finds – Atlanta Journal Constitution

Findings from the retrospective study, based on analysis of patient records from a hospital-based obesity service, were reported in the journal Clinical Endocrinology.

For this study, the researchers randomly picked 242 patients being treated for obesity at the Warwickshire Institute for the Study of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at UHCW from 2005 to 2016. The put the patients in two groups younger than 60 and 60-78 years old and compared the weight loss they achieved during their time being treated.

The hospital-based WISDEM program used only lifestyle-based changes tailored to each individual patient, focusing on dietary changes, psychological support and encouragement of physical activity. Most of the patients referred to the obesity service were morbidly obese with BMIs typically over 40Kgm-2.

All patients had their body weight measured both before and after lifestyle interventions, and the percentage of weight loss was calculated across both groups.

When compared, the two groups were equivalent statistically, with those aged 60 years and over on average reducing their body weight by 7.3% compared with a body weight reduction of 6.9% in those aged under 60 years. Both groups spent a similar amount of time within the obesity service, on average 33.6 months for those 60 years and over, and 41.5 months for those younger than 60 years, the researchers wrote.

Barber added: Age should be no barrier to lifestyle management of obesity. Rather than putting up barriers to older people accessing weight loss programmes, we should be proactively facilitating that process. To do otherwise would risk further and unnecessary neglect of older people through societal ageist misconceptions.

Beyond trades and free agency, the Blue Jays also have some in-house development to focus on that could take them to the next level in 2021 and beyond.

What do you make of Vladimir Guerreros reported offseason weight loss, and will 2021 be his breakout season because of it?-- Everyone

This weeks most common Inbox question will be one of the biggest storylines next Spring Training. For years now, the Blue Jays have wanted Guerrero to improve his conditioning, but the public discourse around this has focused entirely -- and unfairly -- on weight. This is about much more than the number on the scale, so while reports of Guerrero dropping weight and Instagram pictures of him looking trimmer are encouraging, theres so much more to this equation.

When the Blue Jays discuss Guerrero, they say theyd like him to improve his routines," and "routines" is the key word in all of this. The Blue Jays will need to see these changes carried from season to season, which the High Performance Staff and Guerreros own team are working on.

Beyond weight, much of the focus is on flexibility, which could help keep Guerrero on the field long term. Working on that flexibility alongside overall muscle health and strength will be easier for Guerrero when hes developed these routines and is working at a more consistent weight from year to year, but these all need to be considered together in a larger conversation.

Right now, the Blue Jays are happy with how Guerrero is approaching this. This is a multiyear plan that goes well beyond turning heads on Day 1 of Spring Training in February, but credit is due to Guerrero for an impressive start to the process.

Adding both Francisco Lindor and Trevor Bauer in the same offseason would be a stretch, but this highlights an important piece of the Lindor conversation.

If the Blue Jays were to pursue Lindor, Clevelands star shortstop who is expected to be available this offseason, it would take a significant package. Using the Mookie Betts deal from last offseason as a loose framework isnt a bad place to start. The Blue Jays arent looking for a superstar rental, though, and Lindor is entering the last year of his contract at 27. Any potential Lindor acquisition would need to lead to an extension, meaning there would be a massive financial commitment on top of the player acquisition cost.

The Blue Jays have five catchers on their 40-man roster in Danny Jansen, Alejandro Kirk, Gabriel Moreno, Riley Adams and Reese McGuire. There are tiers here, of course. Jansen and Kirk look likely to open the season with the Blue Jays, but Moreno will be an intriguing name to clubs seeking young talent behind the plate. As the clubs No. 8 prospect, Moreno could be used to aim high in a deal if the Blue Jays were to chase a big arm, while Adams (No. 22) could be a complimentary piece in a deal. McGuire, coming off a poor 2020 but still young and talented defensively, would still have some level of appeal, too. Major League clubs need catching depth more than most other positions, and the Blue Jays are in a position of strength.

When you look for quick climbers, its as much about their maturity and ability to handle new challenges as it is about raw talent. Austin Martin, the clubs No. 2 prospect, should burn through the Minor Leagues once he gets the chance. Simeon Woods Richardson (No. 4) should do the same, and its telling that the Blue Jays brought him to Summer Camp in Toronto at just 19. Infielder Orelvis Martinez (No. 7) is about to make the jump from young prospect to a name that Blue Jays fans are buzzing about, and it could happen fast.

The 2022 season might be likelier for Woods Richardson, depending on which opportunities are available in '21, but the Blue Jays have plenty of depth beyond their starting five. Another addition is expected, but as injuries pop up through the season, the Blue Jays should have some combination of Anthony Kay, Thomas Hatch, Trent Thornton, Julian Merryweather and TJ Zeuch ready to jump in. Thats a much better depth group -- with far more upside -- than the Blue Jays have had in recent years.

Martins timeline and his defensive position are tied together. Hes too important to this organization to run into a roadblock positionally, though, so I expect the Blue Jays to have him ready at multiple spots on the diamond. Third is where he took his first official grounders at Summer Camp, but this really gets interesting if the Blue Jays try him in center. Frankly, that long-term plan could depend on what the Blue Jays accomplish this offseason. As it stands, a 2022 debut is on the table.
