Avoid these common yoga mistakes that ups the risk of injury – TheHealthSite

Posted: November 25, 2020 at 10:57 am

Yoga is a great way of keeping fit and healthy. It helps you lose weight in the right manner and also prevents many ailments. It can also help you deal with a range of health conditions including back pain, sinus infections and mental disorders like stress and anxiety to name a few. But, to get all the benefits of yoga, you have to do it the right way. That is why there is so much stress on learning the correct techniques from a certified yoga teacher. But unfortunately, many people try to do this on their own and end up getting seriously injured. This often happens because the asanas look easy and doable. But dont get fooled by this. When it comes to the asanas, there are many rules that you have to follow including breathing techniques meant for each asana. Here, we will look at a few common mistakes that most people are guilty of making while doing yoga. Also Read - Yoga for diabetes: 3 asanas that will help keep your blood sugar levels under control

Yoga puts a lot of emphasis on the flow of breath to and from the lungs. While performing each asana, you have to consciously inhale and exhale effortlessly. But it is not safe to hold your breath for too long and this is a common mistake that many people make. Please know that the lo gest that you can safely hold your breath is for about 1-2 minutes. More than this will lead to a deficiency in the flow of oxygen to your brain. Fainting is a common outcome of holding your breath for too long. But it can also lead to seizures and, in rare cases, brain damage. Moreover, it can cause abnormalities in your heart. So, be mindful about your breathing while doing yoga. There are many yoga asanas, like the downward facing dog, that requires you to go down on your hands and knees. Sometimes, while doing this asana, you may find that your palms lift off the floor. This is a serious mistake as it can cause wrist injury. Always keep your palms flat on the ground throughout the duration of the asana. You may find that spreading out your fingers help. There are some standing poses in yoga. For example, in the tree pose, you have to stand on one foot and raise the other. Many people rest their raised foot on the back side of the standing foot. This can cause knee injury and you may also be in danger of losing your balance and falling down, in which case you will end up hurting yourself more. Be sure to always place your raised foot either above or below the knee to avoid the risk of injury.

Yoga has some planks too. There are some asanas where you have to assume the plank position. One example is the Chaturanga Dandasana. This is a relatively easy pose and this is why most people make the mistake of going too low while performing this asana. This can lead to shoulder injury, lower back pain and posture problems. Be sure to go only half down. Keep your elbows at a 90-degree angle to be safe.

Health: 3 things you should know about weight loss surgery – Daily Herald

Posted: November 25, 2020 at 10:55 am

Most people put on a few extra pounds from time to time especially around the holidays.

When you want to lose 10, 20 or even 30 pounds, you may tackle it with diet and exercise. But what if you have 100 pounds or more to lose?

Diet and exercise are always a vital part of getting to and maintaining a healthy weight, but dealing with obesity may add an extra degree of difficulty. Some people may consider weight loss surgery to help lose excess weight. In fact, more than 250,000 people across the United States chose this avenue in 2018.

If this is an option you are considering, here are some things you should know before taking the plunge:

There are several weight loss procedures, and your doctor can help you decide which will work best for you. For example, gastric bypass involves creating a small stomach pouch that attaches to a section of the small intestine. Food skips over a portion of the small intestine, so your body doesnt absorb as many calories. The smaller stomach also doesnt hold as much food, so you should feel more full. Or you might go with a gastric band surgery, which puts an adjustable band around your stomach to make you feel full sooner. And in a gastric sleeve or duodenal switch surgery, the surgeon removes the majority of your stomach. While all these achieve similar results, your doctor may feel one is more appropriate for your condition than another.

Obesity is a serious health concern among all age groups, including elderly individuals, says Sarah Hilton, a registered nurse. Although all surgeries have some risks, weight loss surgery can be a safe option to help lose weight and improve quality of life.

Being overweight doesnt make you a good candidate for weight loss surgery automatically. A person with a body mass index of 25 is generally considered overweight, but this BMI would not be a good candidate for the surgeries mentioned thus far. However, someone with a BMI of 40 might be considered for surgery. A person with a BMI of 35 and certain health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and breathing injuries could also be a candidate. Along with these criteria, somebody who wants to have weight loss surgery needs to be prepared to make lifestyle changes and undergo follow-up care to ensure the surgery is successful in the long-term.

After you have weight loss surgery, you should not expect all your extra pounds to fall off right away. These surgeries can help you lose weight and improve health conditions associated with obesity, but surgery doesnt do all this on its own. Healthy eating and exercise are necessary to lose weight and keep it off, whether you undergo surgery or not. After having surgery, you will likely need to take vitamin supplements to make sure you are getting enough nutrients. You might have to eat small portion sizes. Some of the lifestyle changes you will have to make could be difficult, and joining a support group can help.

Dont expect weight loss surgery to be the only answer to your trouble with excess weight. It can be a big help, but you will need to put in the work to stay healthy long-term. Your doctor can give you the information and support you need to stick with a healthy lifestyle to ensure your weight loss surgery is as successful as possible.

Parents help their children achieve their dreams any which way possible and that's a fact. Nita Ambani's story is a little similar too.

While everybody knows that Nita Ambani helped her son Anant Ambani lose weight and get fitter, not a lot of people know that Nita herself decided to delve in the game to cheer her son. Yes! She decided to take fitness lessons and lose weight, along with Anant so that he doesn't feel alone or demotivated.

So, when Anant trained under celebrity coach, Vinod Chopra and successfully lost over a 100 kilos in a little over two years, Nita used the time to work on her own self and accompany her son in the physical transformation. In a few months time, she shed over 18 kilos and looked super stunning!

Not only does Anant credit his mom behind pushing him to lose weight and transform himself, it's also the other way around. In an interview, the mother-of-three was quoted talking about the same:

A child does what his mother does, so I couldnt be seen eating while putting him on a diet. So I went on a diet along with Anant. Whatever he ate, I ate. Whenever he exercised, I did too. If he went for a walk, I would go along."

Weight loss story: I have a hot cup of amla jeera water every morning – Times of India

Posted: November 25, 2020 at 10:55 am

As they say, when you get used to seeing results, it becomes your passion. So, the gradual changes like witnessing the number on the weighing scale, a difference in how you look, not feeling bloated or lethargic were enough to keep me going for long.

How do you ensure you dont lose focus? Initially, I have to say, it was tough to manage my routine and get used to new tastes. But, as I did my research, I read a lot and came up with healthy and tasty low-carb recipes which turned out to be super yummy! Soon enough, results started to show and it became a routine.

Also, I give all the credit of my weight loss to my will power which never left me alone during those pizza parties and booze sessions with my friends. While they were bingeing, I would enjoy my bowl of salad.

Whats the most difficult part of being overweight?

I couldn't wear some of the clothes I liked and it pained to see other girls wearing beautiful dresses which wouldnt fit my size. I felt it was a dream I could never achieve!

Also, I always felt lazy and lethargic when I was overweight.

What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? I just want to stay fit and healthy. I want to focus on breathing exercises which would keep my skin glowing and ageless. Also, I want to educate people regarding weight loss and yoga. I plan to take up yoga as a full-time career in the coming years.

Nutrisystem for Men: Pros, Cons, and Review – Healthline

Posted: November 25, 2020 at 10:55 am

Nutrisystem for Men is part of the popular Nutrisystem diet program.

Its targeted toward men and offers prepackaged meals and snacks that are designed to be low in calories to promote fast and convenient weight loss.

Nutrisystem for Men offers more food than the standard program.

However, the Nutrisystem program has some significant drawbacks, including its price and potentially excessive calorie restriction.

This article reviews Nutrisystem for Men, whether it works for weight loss, what foods you should eat and avoid, and its potential downsides.

Nutrisystem for Men is a specialized Nutrisystem program thats tailored to men.

Men typically have higher calorie needs than women, even during weight loss (1).

Nutrisystem is a 4-week program designed to help you quickly lose weight by restricting the number of calories you eat. On Nutrisystem, you eat six small meals per day, and several of these meals and snacks are provided by Nutrisystem.

Nutrisystem-branded foods are designed to be low in calories and fat, high in fiber, and rich in protein. Other foods you may eat while on Nutrisystem should be low in fat and calories.

The system encourages people to use Nutrisystem-branded meals to comprise the bulk of their daily calorie intake throughout the duration of the program.

This eliminates the need for you to strictly track your food or calorie intake.

On the Nutrisystem for Men program, youll receive slightly more food each day than on the standard Nutrisystem program.

Nutrisystem for Men is part of the Nutrisystem program, which offers 4 weeks of prepackaged meals and snacks to promote fast weight loss. Nutrisystem for Men offers more food per day than the standard program.

The Nutrisystem for Men plan is slightly more expensive than the standard Nutrisystem program, as it includes some extra food.

While the standard program costs $913 per day, depending on how much food you receive, Nutrisystem for Men costs $1014 per day.

Nutrisystem also offers a Partner Plan for two people of any gender that costs a flat rate of $74.99 per week per person.

The Nutrisystem for Men plan costs more than the standard Nutrisystem plan because it includes more food. Expect to pay $1014 per day.

Nutrisystem for Men offers three plans to choose from. They differ in how much food you receive each week, the level of customization you get from the program, and the variety of foods you can choose from:

The tailor to your metabolism option involves answering a few extra questions about your activity level, age, and body type. It will supposedly help you lose more weight by offering recommendations to better customize your Nutrisystem meals.

Alternatively, Nutrisystem offers a vegetarian option and Nutrisystem D for people with diabetes.

If you want to select one of these options, youll need to choose them specifically rather than selecting the Nutrisystem for Men plan. For each of these plans, the daily cost for a man is slightly more expensive than the daily cost for a woman.

The program has three tiers based on the level of customization and quantity of food. Men also get extra food on the vegetarian plan and Nutrisystem D, though these options are not part of Nutrisystem for Men.

All Nutrisystem-branded foods are fine for you to eat while youre doing the program.

The plan also allows you to add other foods to their prepackaged meals. Here are the other foods you may choose while on the diet:

On Nutrisystem for Men, you can eat any Nutrisystem-branded foods, along with lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, lower calorie fats and spreads, reduced fat dairy, and whole grains.

On the Nutrisystem for Men diet plan, you should avoid high calorie and high fat foods, including:

Foods to avoid include high fat choices, such as fatty meats and liquid oils, and full fat dairy. Fried foods are also banned on the diet, as are refined carbs, sugary foods, and desserts, including those that contain fruit.

Nutrisystem appears to be effective for weight loss, at least for a short period.

Several studies have shown its effectiveness for weight loss. However, many of them were funded fully or partly by Nutrisystem or carried out with the assistance of Nutrisystem employees. This may have biased the results (2, 3, 4).

One Nutrisystem-funded study in 100 people with obesity and type 2 diabetes found that Nutrisystem participants lost about 16 pounds (7.3 kg) each in 6 months. Meanwhile, those in a diabetes education program lost 5 pounds (2.2 kg) in the same time frame (3).

Another 16-week Nutrisystem-funded study in 78 people noted that those on Nutrisystem had lost more weight, body fat, and inches than those following the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet (4).

The DASH diet is a low fat, low sodium diet that healthcare providers often recommend to help reduce high blood pressure.

Additionally, one review of studies on several commercially available diets found that people on Nutrisystem lost about 4% more weight after 3 months on the program than people who received only diet education or counseling (5).

However, the review could not look at long-term results because all the studies it investigated were less than 1 year in duration.

Its also important to note that these studies looked at the results of other Nutrisystem programs, including Nutrisystem D. They did not specifically investigate the results of Nutrisystem for Men, though these programs are similar.

Nutrisystem appears to help people lose weight over the short term, but these studies didnt investigate long-term results and may have some bias. They also didnt specifically investigate Nutrisystem for Men.

There are several drawbacks to the Nutrisystem for Men program.

One of the Nutrisystem-funded studies noted that men on the program consumed an average of only 1,500 calories per day (4).

While this restriction is likely to result in short-term weight loss, it may not be sustainable for many people and even result in long-term metabolic changes that make it harder to lose weight (6).

In one small study, researchers found that people in a weight loss competition who followed short-term, extremely restrictive diets had a lower metabolic rate even years later, making it harder for them to lose weight and maintain weight loss (6).

A lower metabolic rate means they burned fewer calories at rest. A person with a lower metabolic rate does not burn as many calories per day as someone with a higher metabolic rate.

Another study estimated that people in this weight loss competition consumed an average of 1,300 calories per day and exercised vigorously for about 3 hours per day during the weight loss period (7).

Its important to note that the people who participated in this weight loss competition went through extreme calorie restriction and weight loss over a very short period of time. Thus, the results may not apply to most people who are looking to lose weight.

Excessive calorie restriction may lead to rebound weight gain by causing changes to your hunger hormones that increase your food cravings and desire to eat (8, 9).

When it comes to Nutrisystem in particular, theres a lack of evidence showing long-term outcomes. Few studies have investigated whether people who lost weight on Nutrisystem maintained that weight loss over long periods.

Some studies looked at the results of following Nutrisystem for 46 months. However, many people may find it too expensive or unrealistic to stay on Nutrisystem for Men for that long. That said, you can complete as many cycles of the 4-week program as youd like (3, 4).

Finally, while Nutrisystem-branded foods are formulated to be low in calories and rich in fiber, theyre highly processed. Choosing more whole, minimally processed foods may be better for your overall health (10).

Nutrisystem may be too restrictive, and theres little evidence on long-term weight loss results for participants. The Nutrisystem programs, including Nutrisystem for Men, are also expensive and encourage people to consume highly processed food.

While promises of quick weight loss may seem tempting, some people may not find the Nutrisystem for Men program sustainable over the long term, as it may be overly restrictive.

Even if you see great results after a round or two of the Nutrisystem program, you may regain the weight you lost very quickly after returning to your old eating habits.

For this reason, youll probably have more success with long-term weight loss by making small, sustainable changes to your diet and lifestyle that promote gradual weight loss.

This approach may be more sustainable over the long term, as well as reduce the likelihood youll regain the weight.

Beyond Nutrisystem for Men, there are many diet plans for weight loss that are tailored to people with different needs and tastes. For example, you can choose from diet plans for people who are looking for vegetarian options.

There are also effective plans for weight loss and better health if youre living with diabetes.

Age Doesn’t Matter When It Comes to Losing Weight, Study – Science Times

Posted: November 25, 2020 at 10:55 am

A new study from the University of Warwick and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust, 60-year-old and above obese patients can lose an equivalent weight as younger people do just by changing their lifestyle.

According to a report byScience Daily, the researchers hope that their study will correct the misconceptions society has on the effectiveness of weight loss programs for the elderly, and dispel myths about the benefits of weight loss on older people.

The researchers used an analysis of patient records from hospital-based obesity services in conducting their retrospective study. They published theirfindingsin the journalClinical Endocrinology.

242 patients were randomly selected to participate in the WISDEM-based obesity service between 2005 and 2016. They were divided into two groups for the weight loss they achieved during the program: below 60 years old and those aged 60 to 70.

Their weight was measure before and after lifestyle interventions were administered, and then their percentage of weight loss was calculated. Both groups underwent the same obesity service, wherein those over 60 years old joined the program for an average of 33.6 months while 41.5 months for under 60.

They found that those 60 years old and above reduced average body weight by 7.3% while those under 60 years old reduced an average of 6.9% of their weight.

The program used lifestyle-based changes that are tailored to each participant that focus on their diet, psychological support, and encouragement of physical activity, Science Daily reported

The researchers noted that over 50 comorbidities are present in obese patients can be lessened as they lose weight. These conditions include diabetes, depression and anxiety, osteoarthritis, and many others. Besides, obesity is also linked to high mortality and poor well-being.

Read Also: Weight Loss: Is Counting Calories Better Than Macronutrients?

Study lead author Thomas Barberfrom the University of Warwick said that weight loss is important no matter what age a person may be as people are likely to develop comorbidities at any age due to obesity.

Since many of these comorbidities are similar to symptoms experienced while aging, it can also be said that age plays a role in having these conditions. That is why weight loss is heightened as people get older and that it is something that people should embrace, Barber said.

Moreover, an 'ageist' perspective on weight loss not being relevant to older people and the misconceptions surrounding it have led many people to discount the many reasons why weight loss is still relevant even in old age.

Barber also said that service providers and policymakers must appreciate the importance of weight loss in obese older people for the well-being of healthy aging. Age should not become a barrier in the clinical decisions on the implementation of lifestyle changes of older people.

In other words, there should be a proactive effort in facilitating services for older patients with obesity to avoid unnecessary neglect due to 'ageist' misconceptions.

Is ‘Green’ Mediterranean The Best Diet Plan For Weight Loss? – International Business Times

Posted: November 25, 2020 at 10:55 am

KEY POINTS

The Mediterranean diet has long been believed to be an effective method of weight loss. But a new study suggests that there's an even better way to lose weight: a "greener" version of theMediterranean diet.

A study published Monday in the journal Heartfoundthata "green" Mediterranean dietis the way to go for those looking to adopt a healthier lifestyle whileshedding extra pounds.Iris Shai, a co-author of the study, spoke about the difference between the new form and the old version of the diet in an email toToday.com.

The original form of the Mediterranean dietrequires ahigher dietary intake of fruits, vegetables and whole grainsand a lower intake of red meat. This is believed to be the reason why the diet has been linked to a lower riskof coronary heart disease, strokeand diabetes in various studies.

Shai and her co-authors, however, found that an even higher consumption of greenspaired with far less intake of red meat than the traditional form of the diet required were better forthe heart, reducing the cholesterol accumulated in the body.

The main message of this study is that a Mediterranean diet further restricted in red meat consumption and with a parallel increase in green-plantbased protein with high polyphenol and phytosterols content may provide greater cardiometabolic protection compared to a healthy Mediterranean diet and it will aid in reducing LDL-cholesterol," said Shai, a professor of epidemiology and public health at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba, Israel and an adjunct professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

This was especially remarkable in the unusual and significant 4% reduction in 'bad' cholesterol (LDL) and a 20% regression in low-grade systemic inflammation, she continued in the email.

how to live longer plant based diet Photo: evita-ochel - Pixabay

The results of the study were obtained by randomly assigning294 sedentary and moderately obese adults into one of three dietary groups.

The first group receivedguidance on boosting physical activity as well as advice on following a healthy diet. The second group also received guidance in physical activity, plus advice on following a traditional Mediterraneandiet.

The third group received both, but with a stricter, greener Mediterraneandiet. Their daily menu consisted of 100 grams of frozen Wolffia globosa cubes thatwere taken in the form ofa green plant-based protein shake. The shake was intended to replace animal protein.

According to Shai, Wolffia globosa, also known as duckweed, has been consumed as human food for hundreds of years, mainly in Laos, Vietnam and Thailand, where it is called meat for the poor thanks to its high protein content.

After six months, data analysis revealed that participants who followedeither type of Mediterraneandiet lost more weight than the participants who only received guidelines on a healthy diet.

The ones who didn't follow either diet lost an average of 3.3 pounds (1.5 kilograms), with their waist circumference having shrunk by an average of 4.3 centimeters,Healthline reported. The traditional Mediterranean diet group lost 11.9 pounds (5.4 kilograms), and their waist circumference decreased by6.8 centimeters.

Meanwhile, thegreen Mediterranean diet group lost a total of 13.6 pounds (6.2 kilograms) and had an average of 8.6 centimeters taken off their waist circumference.

Weight loss isn't the only benefit one can reap when following the Meditteranean diet. Additional health benefits include a decreasein diastolic blood pressure and insulin resistance.
