Do you have high cholesterol? The best diet plan to protect your arteries – Express

Posted: November 21, 2020 at 2:58 pm

Also known as hyperlipidemia, high cholesterol means there's too many fats in your blood - notably cholesterol and triglycerides. These can clump together and stick to the artery walls in a process known as atherosclerosis.

The American Heart Association (AHA) asserted that "high cholesterol can be lowered".

"The best way to lower your cholesterol is to reduce your intake of saturated fat and trans fat," stated the AHA.

What are saturated fats?

Typically solid at room temperature, the majority of saturated fats come from animal sources.

Fatty cuts of beef, lamb, and pork are examples of foods high in saturated fat.

In addition, so are lard, cream, butter, cheese and dairy products made from whole or reduced-fat (two percent) milk.

Many baked goods and fried foods can contain high levels of saturated fats too.

What are trans fats?

There are "naturally-occurring and artificial trans fats", clarified the AHA.

As trans fats can be labelled as "partially hydrogenated oils", look out for it on nutrition labels, in particular keep an eye on:

In order to minimise how much saturated fat and trans fats you have in your diet, you need to focus on healthy eating.

A heart-healthy diet is usually best when it comes to reducing your cholesterol levels.

This type of diet emphasises fruits, vegetables, whole grains, poultry, fish, nuts and "nontropical vegetable oils".

Healthy cooking oils

Otherwise referred to as "nontropical vegetable oils" by the ADA, these are the following cooking oils:

If you do want to choose lean cuts of meat (with minimal visible fat), consider the following:

Do trim all visible fat from meat before cooking, and if you're opting for "ground beef" then choose the "extra lean" version.

Fish

Choose oily fish, such as salmon, trout and herring these are high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Shrimp, crab and lobster are also good choices in place of many cuts of meat and poultry.

Meatless meals featuring vegetables and beans are an easy way to lower your cholesterol.

Examples of tasty vegetarian meals include aubergine lasagna, or a big, grilled mushroom burger.

Vegetables

Adding herbs and spices to vegetables can really make them taste delicious. If you'd like any ideas, the ADA suggests the following:

Chopped parsley and chives sprinkled on before serving can also add a burst of flavour to your meals.

Diet Tips For Piles: Here’s What You Should Eat And Avoid To Fight Hemorrhoids – NDTV Doctor

Posted: November 21, 2020 at 2:58 pm

Fibre-rich foods can help reduce constipation and piles discomfort

Piles or hemorrhoids are swellings within the rectum or around the anus that consist of swollen blood vessels. Piles in the majority of cases are light and most people are uninformed of their existence. Serious cases however have bleeding bright red blood and itching after the stools. Piles are common but the exact cause of this condition is unknown as many people do not consult their doctor for piles due to societal stigma and embarrassment. It is estimated that almost half of the population above 50 years of age suffer from piles.

Food plays a very important role in this condition. Certain types of food can worsen piles and some foods can make it better naturally. However, if you don't seem to improve or worsen, see your doctor for the best treatment. Whether or not you are suffering from piles, it is important to eat a healthy balanced diet that contains sufficient fibre. People with this condition are recommended to eat a lot of fibre. Fibre makes stools softer, making it easy to pass them out. It is also important to eat a lot of liquids in the form of water and fruit juices. There are a number of foods that worsen the condition of piles. Foods that are low in fibre should be avoided as they increase constipation which triggers piles.

Rebel Wilson may have done Mayr Method for weight loss: what to know – Insider – INSIDER

Posted: November 21, 2020 at 2:56 pm

Actress Rebel Wilson has lost a significant amount of weightin recent months after declaring 2020 to be her "Year of Health" and working with a personal trainer on her fitness goals.

She's also reportedly following a new diet called the Mayr Method, according to People. The plan is based on the ideas of an Austrian physician, Dr. Franz Xaver Mayr, developed about a century ago. It's now the basis of treatment at Vivamayr, a chain of luxury wellness and medical spas beloved by celebrities.

Experts have mixed feelings about the diet.

"I've been a clinical dietitian for more than 20 years and I've never had anyone come to me and say they've been doing this," Sue Heikkinen, head registered dietitian for the calorie tracking app MyNetDiary, told Insider. "It's not one of the popular ones, and maybe for good reason."

While it includes some good advice, such as eating more slowly and cutting back on sugar, many of its claims aren't supported by evidence and could in fact stall weight loss efforts, according to dietitians. Here's what experts say about the diet's rules and whether you should follow its advice.

Does it work?Kind of.

Eliminating distractions and focusing more on the experience of eating can be a good thing, according to Bonnie Taub-Dix, registered dietitian nutritionistandauthor of Read It Before You Eat It - Taking You from Label to Table.

Slowing down helps you to better appreciate the taste and texture of your food. This can make you feel more satisfied with your meal, and less likely to overindulge.

"Mindful eating is great idea whether you need to lose weight, gain weight or stay the same, I'd encourage it no matter your diet," she said.

The Mayr Method goes a step further, recommending that dieters chewing each bite of food at least 40 times to slow down the eating process and promote better digestion.

That's unnecessary and likely to be a nuisance, according to Heikkinen.

"Most of us do eat too quickly, but 40 times is a lot and counting that is likely to take away from your enjoyment of the food," she said.

Does it work? Yes, but not because of the reasons given by the Mayr Method.

The Mayr Method claims eating foods like fruits and veggies can help you lose weight by balancing your body's pH level.

There's no evidence this is true. The alkaline diet has previously been debunked since the body regulates its pH level naturally, and no combination of food can change that (nor would you want to!).

Swapping processed foods, sugary items, and red meat and replacing them with whole plant foods can help you lose weight simply because it can decrease calories while increasing the nutrients you consume.

"Eating more fruits and vegetables is always a good weight loss strategy," Heikkinen said. "If it's a way to get people to eat more of those, that's awesome, but it's not because of any alkaline effect."

Does it work? No.

Unless you're sensitive to either lactose (a sugar in dairy) or gluten, both Heikkinen and Taub-Dix said that there's no inherent benefit for weight loss if you swear off cheese, bread, and similar foods.

In fact, some of those foods can benefit dieters. Whole grains, for instance, can help you feel more full after eating, and cheese adds flavor, both of which lead to more satisfaction.

"It's not as if cutting out dairy or gluten is going to make your diet magical," Taub-Dix said. "This shines a light on how celebrities aren't setting good examples when they set their tables if they embrace restrictive diets with extensive do and don't lists."

Does it work?Maybe.

Experts are mixed about this one, since it really depends on the person. For people who struggle with distracted eating or stress-snacking, limiting food to mealtimes can cut out empty calories.

"I think this can be a good strategy for many people.Structure has a lot of value for people because it eliminates that struggle of should I eat or not," Heikkinen said.

On the other hand, small, regular snacks can prevent you from getting too hungry and overdoing it when you sit down to a meal.

"Successful diets include smart snacking," Taub-Dix said. "If you choose wisely, there's a good chance it helps keep your blood sugar stable."

Does it work?Yes, but it's not a "detox."

'Cutting out added sugar is a wise weight loss strategy, cutting out a source of calories without nutrients that don't tend to be very filling," Heikkinen said.

She added that "detox" is a pseudoscientific term that sounds more effective than it really is. And sugar isn't necessarily bad, particularly natural sources of sugar like fruit that are also loaded with nutrients.

"There's no one food that is the cause of being overweight. But it can be helpful and healthier to cut back on added sugar," Taub-Dix said.

Does it work? No, and this one could backfire.

There's some evidence that caffeine, in the form of coffee and tea, can have benefits for your metabolism. There's no evidence cutting back can speed weight loss, so it ends up being an unnecessary restriction for people who enjoy those beverages.

"For weight loss there's so many things people are deprived of, why take away coffee which is low in calories?" Heikkinen said.

The exception is if you typically get your caffeine in the form of soda or sweetened coffee drinks, or have a habit of snacking at the same time.

In this case, being aware of your caffeine habits can help you eliminate some sources of hidden calories in your diet.

Does it work?Definitely not.

In fact, the opposite is true. Heikkinen recommends taking sips of water or another healthy beverage between bites to help slow down your meal. And no evidence suggests there's anything wrong with eating fruits, raw vegetables and similar food later in the day, for digestion or any other reason.

"There's no reason to do this and I don't know where it comes from," Heikkinen said. "It's ridiculous to think that you can't eat a salad at dinner just because it's raw."

Does it work?Maybe.

There's some evidence eating early in the day can have a slight benefit for your metabolism.

And if you're eating a majority of your calories in the evening, you might benefit from spreading them out a bit more throughout the day. But for most people, this is a matter of preference. It's also possible to overdo it on this advice, if you're waking up to a heap of eggs, bacon, sausage and toast to start each day.

"It's good to think about timing your meals to when you're going to need the most energy," Taub-Dix said. "But a big breakfast can be unhealthy too. It's all about balance."

Are you someone trying to lose weight? Its a fact that you need to eat a healthy diet and do exercise to achieve a healthy weight. Most people today focus on being fit by changing their lifestyle habits. After all, diet plays an important role when it comes to weight loss. One such food that has always been on the list of fitness enthusiasts is eggs. Also Read - Fibre intake for weight loss: Choose whole foods rather than supplements

Many people discard egg yolk, considering it unhealthy and bad for weight loss. Although egg yolks contain cholesterol, they are not as bad as you may think. Several studies have concluded that dietary cholesterol is not bad for those trying to lose weight. So, it may not increase bad cholesterol levels in the body. In fact, egg yolks are rich in dietary fibre, vitamin B-12, vitamin A and E, zinc, sodium, potassium, iron, magnesium, calcium and more. Also Read - Addicted to sugar? While eggs can be cooked in a variety of ways, it is best to cook it in traditionally used oils like coconut oil if you are trying to lose weight. Commonly used additives like butter can add calories to your meal and sabotage your weight loss plans. These additives also contain saturated and trans-fat, which may lead to health issues such as high cholesterol levels and cardiovascular diseases. Coconut oil, on the contrary, does not contain saturated fats and is considered one of the best oils for weight loss.

One common mistake people tend to make is overcooking the eggs. Cooking eggs make nutrients like protein more digestible. However, overcooking them can result in a reduction of nutrients like antioxidants and vitamins. When eggs are cooked at high temperatures, the cholesterol in them may become oxidized and produce oxysterols, compounds that increase the risk of heart diseases.

Although eggs can be paired with several other foods, it is best to pair them with foods that will be beneficial for your weight loss journey. Vegetables, for instance, are a great choice if you are trying to get rid of the extra kilos. Upgrade your meal with some fibre-rich and healthy veggies like spinach, tomatoes and capsicum. You can add them to an omelette or scrambled eggs, or you can have vegetables on the side.

When it comes to weight loss, it is essential to know the number of calories youre eating. It is best to choose a low-calorie option if you are someone trying to lose weight. Weight watchers should go for either poached or boiled eggs to avoid weight gain.

Weight loss: I gave up my biggest addiction Maggi and lost 20 kilos in 5 months with diet control and workout! – Times of India

Posted: November 21, 2020 at 2:56 pm

When I look at myself now, it gives a sense of accomplishment.

I am not saying I don't feel the need to skip exercises and give excuses, but when I feel even a bit negative, or lazy, I recall all the efforts it took me to get to this point. There's no going back post that.

Also, motivation to me is not when you avoid greasy junk food when it's not around, it's about looking at it in front of you and still deciding to eat that portion of steamed Idlis.

How do you ensure you dont lose focus?

Before, for me, the problem always was the lack of time due to the busy work commitments or not having the neccessary equipment to workout. This time, I challenged myself to give it my best and not give up without trying. Now, fitness is such an important part of my life, I try and exercise, be it even doing 5 push-ups. Rhythm and coordination should not be broken.

Also, I was tired of making excuses. Excuses sound best to the person who is actually making them up. Am I 100% consistent? To tell you the truth, I am Not but I am not 50% either :).

Whats the most difficult part of being overweight? I would like to go beyond the usual cliched statements of 'clothes not fitting' or 'people making fun of you'. To me, it was always about not being at your best when you actually can with efforts and hence, losing a sense of affection for yourself.

Fargo father alleges organization charged with taking care of his son led to severe weight loss, malnutrition – INFORUM

Posted: November 21, 2020 at 2:56 pm

Topher Williams says his son, Jake Williams, while living in a group home for those with health and developmental disabilities, suffered from malnutrition, dehydration and severe weight loss under the care of Catholic Health Initiatives' Friendship Inc.

20-year-old Jake Williams was born with a wide variety of health issues and has been living in a group home under CHI Friendship Inc. for the last 10 years.

Since May, Jake Williams has been in and out of the hospital a dozen times. His father says Friendship Inc. treated his son and the family well, but when the coronavirus pandemic hit in March, things changed.

"For understandable reasons, we weren't allowed to go into the house and we noticed throughout Skype conversations that he was losing weight," Williams said.

Seeing his son's health decline, in June, he and his family begged to get Jake Williams to the hospital, but Williams said that care givers refused.

"He doesn't feel pain like we do, our '10', is his 'three,' so we have pictures (showing) his left leg was twice as big as his right leg," Williams explained. "How do you not notice that and not bring him in?"

Caregivers finally agreed to a hospital visit, and his family was allowed to see him for the first time in months.

"He looked gaunt, he was incredibly bony, his spine was stick out almost like a stegosaurus," Williams said.

Jake Williams went from 80 lbs. to 63 lbs., a big drop for a person of that size.

All the explanation Williams received about the condition of his son was that "sometimes he doesn't like to eat."

Board chairwoman of the Catholic Health Initiatives Kathy Hogan has 40-plus years of experience in human services. While she isn't aware of this particular case, she says decisions on this level are up to individual teams at different locations and that Topher Williams was supposed to be included in the conversation.

"I was a little confused by a father saying, 'I don't understand that.' He should have been a member of that team," Hogan said.

After several hospital visits, Jake Williams now has a feeding tube, and has gained 6 lbs. Now Williams says Friendship Inc. won't take his son back.

"They kept coming up with reasons why they couldn't take him back, and someone brought up in a meeting that all the reasons they're giving is why your facility exists," Williams said.

Williams has filed a complaint with the state and with the Protection and Advocacy Project, an organization helping to represent those with disabilities.

Now, Topher is looking for a new home for Jake. Multiple people have reached out to WDAY, stating they've experienced similar situations.

Williams hopes no other family has to go through anything similar.

"I just don't want this to happen to any other kid, because I'm sure it's happened before and if people don't speak up, it's going to happen again," Williams said.

The Protection and Advocacy Project said they can't confirm or deny if there's an active investigation, and CHI's Friendship Inc. did not respond to WDAY's request for a comment to this story.

Hogan did say that if there is a formal abuse or neglect complaint, the board will review it.
