4 ways to naturally lower bilirubin levels and improve your overall liver health – Business Insider India

Posted: November 20, 2020 at 3:58 am

Bilirubin is a viscous, brownish-yellow substance that is a natural byproduct of liver processes like breaking down old red blood cells.

Normally, it is excreted from the body without cause for alarm, but at times it can build up in high levels, indicating an underlying health condition like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis, or alcoholic cirrhosis.

However, some conditions like Gilbert's syndrome an inherited condition that is harmless can cause elevated bilirubin levels.

High bilirubin levels result in jaundice a condition that causes a distinct yellow cast to the skin, the whites of eyes, and the underside of the tongue.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately, as an underlying liver condition will require more than just at-home remedies. However, following these four tips can help you boost overall liver health in addition to medical guidance.

Staying hydrated helps lower bilirubin levels by facilitating the removal of waste from the body. Men should aim to drink about 125 ounces of water a day and women 91 ounces.

Because fruits and vegetables are low in fat and sugar, they promote overall liver and organ health.

Kwo is a big fan of the Mediterranean diet for those looking to improve their liver health. The diet emphasizes leafy green vegetables. "So spinach, broccoli, cabbage, arugula, these are all good for the liver," says Kwo. Other liver-healthy foods include:

Good sources of fiber include:

Kwo says the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, a federal body made up of 20 health experts, recently recommended that both men and women limit themselves to one drink per day. However, to promote maximum liver health, you should avoid drinking entirely.

Daily Harvest Review: Cost, Pros, Cons, and More – Healthline

Posted: November 20, 2020 at 3:57 am

Daily Harvest is a plant-based meal delivery service providing a variety of ready-to-eat smoothies, oat and chia bowls, flatbreads, harvest bowls, soups, snacks, and even lattes.

The company aims to make eating healthier easy and delicious by helping provide more fruits and vegetables in your diet.

This article takes a closer look at the pros and cons of Daily Harvest, as well as who may benefit from trying it.

Daily Harvest started as a prepackaged, frozen smoothie delivery service. Since then, it has expanded to include meal and snack options for any time of day.

The company prides itself on using fruits and vegetables as the foundation of each of its products.

It currently offers more than 80 plant-based menu items to choose from, including a variety of smoothies, breakfast bowls, harvest bowls, and soups.

You select the menu items you want, and they arrive on your doorstep, completely frozen.

In April of 2020, Daily Harvest announced it was working toward becoming 100% recyclable.

In fact, the company is already partway there, as its cardboard delivery boxes, cups, bowls, and insulated dry ice bags are either recyclable or compostable.

In addition to being vegan, all of Daily Harvests items are gluten-free with zero additives or preservatives.

Unlike other meal delivery services, Daily Harvest does not offer predesigned menus. Instead, customers get to choose which items they want to receive each week.

Current plans include a weekly delivery of 9, 12, or 24 items, or a monthly delivery of 24 items.

Customers can order online or through the Daily Harvest smartphone app. Using their online account, they may also skip weeks, swap out selections, and manage deliveries.

Once you choose your plan, you can select your meals from more than 80 chef-crafted options, including:

Note that most of the items come with one serving per order. However, the snack bites, ice creams, and lattes contain multiple servings per order.

Daily Harvest makes its meals with high quality, plant-based ingredients. Meals are free of additives, preservatives, and fillers.

The company describes its ingredients as being thoughtfully sourced. It says it works closely with farmers and food suppliers to ensure optimal quality.

While it uses some conventional produce, 95% of the ingredients are organic.

The company also aims to avoid pesticides. Certain types of nonorganic produce tend to have high pesticide residues, according to the Environmental Working Group. Daily Harvest specifically avoids these by selecting organic versions of these fruits and vegetables (1).

All of Daily Harvests meals are vegan and feature a base of fruits and vegetables.

Meals also commonly include other high quality, plant-based ingredients, such as nuts, seeds, whole grains, spices, herbs, and powders like matcha and cacao.

Sweeter options, like its ice creams, bites, and lattes, are either sweetened with fruit or contain natural sweeteners like organic maple syrup.

An important thing to note is that consumers need to provide their own liquids. For example, youll need plant-based milk to make a smoothie or your own broth to reheat one of the soups.

In-house nutritionists and chefs craft Daily Harvest recipes with high quality ingredients.

To ensure freshness, all of the items arrive at your door frozen and packaged with dry ice.

Once you get your meals, they should last for up to 3 months in the freezer.

You can reheat items like soups, harvest bowls, and oat bowls in the microwave or on the stove. You may want to heat the flatbreads in either a traditional oven or toaster oven.

Meanwhile, you can eat the bites and ice creams straight from the freezer.

In addition to being fresh, Daily Harvests items are flavorful because they use produce thats frozen at peak ripeness. They also include herbs, spices, and homemade sauces.

However, those looking for variety week-to-week may find the meal service repetitive after a few orders. The company has more than 80 items on its menu but does not add new items regularly.

All of Daily Harvests meals, snacks, and lattes are plant-based, vegan, gluten-free, and made to support a balanced diet.

However, because customers need to provide their own milk and broths for some of the items, its up to the customer whether these meals remain vegan and dairy-free.

Many of the items are too high in carbs to be suitable for keto or other very-low-carb diets. Also, while some items may be paleo-friendly, the meals are not designed with the paleo diet in mind.

Furthermore, the meals are not specifically designed to be low in salt or fat. However, the nutritional information is available for each item, so you can pick and choose suitable options for your specific health needs.

Its also important to note that most of the meals are generally lower in calories and protein. As a result, they may not be filling enough or provide adequate calories and nutrients, depending on your individual needs.

Finally, Daily Harvest may not be a good fit if you have severe food allergies. Allergen information is available for each item, but all of the items are prepared in the same facility, so cross contamination could occur.

Daily Harvest does not claim to help support weight loss. Instead, its designed to simply help people eat more healthy, plant-based meals.

That said, most entres contain 400 or fewer calories, so some individuals may find themselves losing weight by using Daily Harvest.

Depending on your current calorie intake, replacing some or all of your meals with Daily Harvests lower calorie options could result in a reduction in your overall calorie intake and subsequent weight loss (2, 3).

Additionally, studies have found plant-based diets are associated with weight loss and a reduced risk of obesity (4, 5, 6).

However, research has also shown that a higher protein intake can increase feelings of fullness and help people lose weight (7, 8).

Because many of Daily Harvests options are lower in protein, with 20 or fewer grams per serving, some individuals may not find the meals to be filling enough on their own.

Its also important to note that the nutrition facts for each item do not include any liquid that customers need to add themselves.

Finally, whether you lose weight using Daily Harvest also depends on many other factors, such as other foods youre eating throughout the day and your physical activity level.

The cost of Daily Harvest depends on which items you choose and how many items you order at once. Discounts are offered on larger orders.

Item prices range from $5.99 for oat and chia bowls to $8.99 for harvest bowls, flatbreads, and pints of plant-based ice cream.

However, the more items you order, the more money you save on your full order:

Shipping and taxes are included in the base price of each item, so there are no surprise costs at checkout.

You also have up until 6 p.m. Eastern Time on the Sunday before your planned delivery to modify or skip your order. You can make changes to orders via the Daily Harvest website or app.

For new customers, Daily Harvest is currently offering $10 off each of the first three orders.

Daily Harvest provides high quality, plant-based meals and snacks that are convenient and flavorful.

It may be a good option for those looking to eat more plant-based meals without having to spend extra time in the kitchen.

Because you get to choose which items are included, Daily Harvest is also a good choice if youre looking for easy breakfasts, lunches, or snacks to enjoy throughout the week.

However, each meal contains just one serving, so Daily Harvest is not a great option for families.

Additionally, the items can get quite expensive and may not be filling enough if youre relying on Daily Harvest for all three meals each day.

The majority of entres contain fewer than 400 calories per serving, so many adults will need to order additional servings or incorporate other sources of calories into their meals to meet their daily nutritional needs.

Therefore, it may not be ideal for those on a tight budget or hoping to avoid additional food shopping for the week.

Finally, Daily Harvest may not be a good option for people with special dietary needs or preferences.

In particular, the companys emphasis on fruits and vegetables and avoidance of animal-based products makes it poorly suited for keto, paleo, and many other low carb diets that often incorporate animal products.

Daily Harvest provides delicious, high quality meals and snacks that arrive frozen at your doorstep and are quick to prepare.

It offers a variety of vegan and gluten-free smoothies, oat bowls, chia bowls, grain bowls, soups, and flatbreads. This makes the service a convenient option for those looking to incorporate more healthy, plant-based foods into their diet.

However, Daily Harvest is relatively expensive and may not be ideal for individuals with severe food allergies or those on certain diets.

Finally, because many of the items are relatively low in calories and require additional liquid to prepare, youll likely still need to buy additional groceries for the week.

The pros and cons of the keto diet, according to one dietician – Yahoo Sports

Posted: November 20, 2020 at 3:57 am

Watch: What is the keto diet and how does it work?

Halle Berry swears by it, Kourtney Kardashian cant get enough of it, and Gwyneth Paltrow has dabbled with it in the past. The keto diet is much loved by celebrities due to its fast results, however, is it all too good to be true?

Registered dietician, Dr Sarah Schenker, believes that while there might be some possible health benefits to it, in her mind its not the perfect diet.

The biggest problem though, in my opinion, is that it's not sustainable, she says.

Read more: Drink regular fizzy drink instead of diet version when eating carbs, study suggests

It will work to begin with, but you can't sustain an eating regime like this and if you don't learn to change your eating habits over the long term, once you go back to your old habits, you will gain all that weight you lost and you'll just have to start all over again!

So, what is this diet that promises quick weight loss without sacrificing favourite foods such as bacon and eggs?

It is actually a modern day version of the old Atkins diet, so it's very low carbohydrate, high fat, high protein, explains Dr Schenker.

She continues: The difference is it concentrates on healthy fats and healthy proteins, rather than too much processed meats and saturated fats, which was the problem with the Atkins diet

The biggest reason people look to the keto diet is for a fast weight loss. Dr Schenker says this happens because denying your body carbohydrates pushes the body into ketosis, causing the body to use fat as a fuel.

The result of this is that you lose a lot of weight very quickly, so people love it when they first start the keto diet, because they see really good results and they're very motivational, says the doctor.

Aside from helping with motivation, there are supposed health benefits to the keto diet, including controlling insulin response.

Read more: Vegetarian diet rich in nuts and soy reduce the risk of stroke

Story continues

One study in Italy, also showed that those patients on a keto diet experienced less migraines than those on a different type of diet, while another review looked at the positive impact a keto diet has on epilepsy seizures.

While this is good news, there is still much more research that has to be done on the true health benefits of a diet that is low in carbohydrates.

One aspect of this diet that puts off a lot of people is keto flu where dieters experience a lack of energy, fatigue and an inability to sleep properly. Dr Schenker say this does pass after a few days but its sometimes enough to put people off the diet.

She believes however, one of the biggest downsides is that youll probably have to take additional vitamin and mineral supplements while on this diet.

She says: When you exclude carbohydrates from your diet, particularly whole grains, along with other things like beans and pulses and even fruit and fruit juices, aren't strictly allowed on the keto diet, you could miss out on valuable nutrients, such as vitamin C, maybe magnesium.

Due to not being able to include roughage from foods like beans, pulses and fruits, theres a slightly more embarrassing side effect of the keto diet constipation.

The other thing is it's quite hard to get enough fibre because you're not getting the whole grains, advises Dr Schenker.

You might find that you start to suffer things like constipation or other bowel problems.

If youre having digestive problems on the keto diet, try choosing low carb, high fibre options such as chia seeds, avocadoes, cauliflower and flaxseed.

Dancing With The Stars Host Tyra Banks Thinks Diets Are A Bunch Of Bologna – Women’s Health

Posted: November 20, 2020 at 3:57 am

Tyra Banks has done it all, including modeling, starting businesses, inspiring millions, writing books, acting, and, yes, experimenting with more than a handful of diets.

I used to feel like my body was not mine, Tyra told People in 2018. Ive been too thin or too big. And I used to feel like I was betraying people if I lost weight.

And though she used to fall for fad diets, she's focusing on balance and feeling healthy these days. I do not believe in diets. I have been on diets in the past. They are a bunch of bologna," Tyra said in a statement. "This is a lifestyle change. Its not about being skinny. Its about being in the best shape you can be.

To get there, Tyra has kept food journals and worked with a nutritionist. My nutritionist says, 'If you bite it, write it,'"she previously told Women's Health. "Writing down everything that you put in your mouth really helps. I dont count a damn calorie. But when Im really trying to eat healthy, I write everything down. It really holds me accountable and puts me on a healthier path.

Now, she's hosting Dancing With the Stars and launching a whole new business venture focused on her fave food: ice cream. (Yep, her latest creation is an ice cream brand called SMiZE Cream.)

Right now, I am 25 pounds heavier than I was on the cover of a very famous swimsuit magazine that came out last year, she told Harper's BAZAAR in a video. (She's talking about the 2019 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.)

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Here's exactly what Tyra eats in a day to feel her healthiest and happiest.

Tyra starts her day with black coffee. But, she gets plenty of flavor in before she pours it in her mug, because she usually goes for vanilla- or caramel-flavored beans, she told Harper's BAZAAR in a video. She's also a matcha fan.

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

She has a whole bagel routine that's seriously impressive:

"I cut the bagel I half and then I scoop out aaaall that extra bagleisation and put that on the side," she told Harpers BAZAAR. "Then I take my whipped cream cheese and I dig deep into that pot if it. And I fill up the entire scooped out bagel rounds like a moat." She pops her cream cheese-filled creation in the microwave to make it warm and creamy as-can-be.

Finding time for lunch is tough for the multi-business mogul slash supermodel slash TV host. Lunch isn't often a sit down affair, so Tyra's solution is snacksand lots of them, she told Harper's BAZAAR.

When she does have a second to sit down, though, Tyra loves eating at a local diner. "Diners are a girl's best friend," she wrote on Instagram.

Another quick-but-fun lunch solution: Tyra hits up multiple fast food restaurants, orders burgers, and compares them, she told Harper's BAZAAR. It may not be scientific, but sounds delish.

Tyra doesn't skimp on healthy snacks, and has a dedicated "snack box" at her office. In it, you'll find everything from natural licorice, to bean chips, to corn chips, to cauliflower puffs, she told Harper's BAZAAR.

She's also "nuts for cashews," according to a recent Instagram post. "They are so rich and tasty to me," she wrote.

Though she's all about convenient grab-and-go eats and isn't much of a chef, Tyra has perfected on go-to snack: candied bacon. She makes it by coating bacon in Sriracha and maple syrup and topping it with black pepper. Then it goes in the oven until starts to caramelize. Its almost like candy, she said in the Harper's BAZAAR video. It is so good.

Tyra goes all-out at dinnertime, doing taste tests of different restaurants' versions of the same dishes with her son. "For dinner, I love doing something that's a little special and a little bit indulgent," she shared in her Harper's BAZAAR video. We line it up and then we score the different restaurants with the same item. The next time you order, you know where to order from."

Often on the trial list: hamburgers and Mexican food.

Rebel Wilson Shares the Motivation Tips That Helped Her Lose 40 Pounds This Year – Prevention.com

Posted: November 20, 2020 at 3:57 am

Rebel Wilson has been working so hard to meet her wellness goals this year, but the Cats star recently admitted that its not always easy to stay motivated. (Anyone who has been trying to keep up with their workouts during quarantine can confirm that.)

Wilson, who has lost about 40 pounds this year with various lifestyle changes, admitted that she was having a bad day in a candid Instagram. The 40-year-old actress, rocking a sports bra and leggings in the animated photo, also revealed how she turned her day around.

Started off having a bad day but took myself on a giant walk, listening to some motivational podcasts and audiobooks (currently @antmiddleton The Fear Bubble) out in gorgeous nature...drank water...and you know what, feel soooo much better now, she wrote in the caption. We all have tough days but take a beat, take a nap, and then get back out there and continue to crush .

Wilson has been keeping fans updated on her fitness journey on Instagram, and her trainer Jono Castano Acero told Today that he encouraged the star to do so. This helped Wilson hold herself accountable on social media, which shes been doing since she announced 2020 as her Year of Health in January.

Rebel has been posting for the whole 2020 about her journey, the ups and downs, the trainer said, adding that he checks in with the actress often about her progress. Its not just about 45 minutes with a person. Its about 24 hours, checking in.

Wilson also told Drew Barrymore that turning 40 this year motivated her to make changes in her life after suffering from emotional eating.

I never really focused on my health, which was probably obvious. I was going all around the world jet-setting everywhere and eating a ton of sugar, she said, adding that she had been following a carb-heavy diet. That was kind of my vice. I have a very sweet tooth. I love desserts.

Wilson, who is now reportedly following the Mayr Method Diet, says she feels so much healthier now but made it clear that the road to better health is an ongoing process. It doesnt mean every week is a healthy week, Wilson told People. Some weeks are just write-offs, and theres nothing you can do about that.

I'm just trying to go for overall balance, overall healthy balance, she continued. I have this state of being, which is not my quote, but I go Nothing is forbidden. Well be like, Should we get In-N-Out burger? And Im like, Nothing is forbidden. I can go there, I just might eat half of what I used to eat before. You know? And Ill have a burger, and a few fries, and then you feel fine.

Keep going, Rebel!

For Tigers prospect Roberto Campos, the waiting is truly the hardest part – The Detroit News

Posted: November 20, 2020 at 3:57 am

Detroit Since collecting his $2.85 million signing bonus from the Tigers in July2019, 17-year-old outfield prospect Roberto Campos has bought his parents a home near the Tigers baseball academy in the Dominican Republic. Hes worked out nearly every day, refined his diet and transformed some of the baby fat on his 6-3, 200-pound frame into lean muscle.

In 2019, the Tigers gave Roberto Campos the largest signing bonus ever awarded to an international prospect in the franchise.(Photo: Detroit Tigers)

He also watched with immense pride his idol and Cuban countryman Jose Abreu win American League MVP honors. He was locked in on the White Sox playoff run, too, because another of his heroes, Luis Robert, was a big part of their success.

The one thing he hasnt done, not since early March when COVID-19 shut everything down, is play competitive baseball.

Its been both good and bad, Campos said through Tigers interpreter Carlos Guillen in a Zoom call Thursday. The good side of it, its been very good to spend time with my family. Obviously the bad side is missing baseball. Its what Ive done since I was a kid. I miss it a lot.

Talk about a dream deferred.

At age 12, Campos came to Orlando with his Cuban travel team and went 15 for 20 with five home runs in a tournament. The next year, he was most valuable player at a showcase in the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana). Instead of going back to Cuba with his team, he and his father Yuniel stayed defected.

Soon after that he linked up with former Tiger turned trainer Alex Sanchez. Three years later, at age 16, he was given the largest signing bonus the Tigers ever handed out to an international prospect.

And then it all came to a screeching halt.

I thought I was going to play here (in the Dominican) in the summer and then jump to the U.S. and start going up and up, Campos said. But this has been a year that stunted me, held me back in that sense. But here we are.

In 2019 he was still too young to come to Lakeland. He was preparing to play in the Dominican Summer League this spring, which would have been his first taste of pro ball, when the pandemic struck.

So, some 16 months after signing, Campos hasnt seen a single pitch or played a single inning in the field in any sanctioned professional baseball game. The only live pitching hed seen before this week was from a couple of his friends who were competing in showcases for scouts.

Ive just been working specifically on my body, on the physical side of it, and on my diet, he said.

If things go right, if the pandemic allows, Campos should finally make it to Lakeland in February and participate in minor league camp. To say the least, he cannot wait.

Im crazy for being there, he said. Just to get to Lakeland and start playing with the guys and develop my career.

In the meantime, the Tigers have opened their baseball academy in San Pedro de Macoris, which is a few miles from Campos home. Since Sunday, hes been participating in the Tigers Dominican instructional league, which will run through Dec. 13.

This is what I do, Campos said. Baseball is the only thing I know how to do. I left Cuba to be able to play professional baseball. I have family in Cuba who are very proud of what I am doing. I will continue to work. I will make adjustments.

Despite not having played any structured baseball, MLBPipeline still ranks Campos the 20th-best prospect in the Tigers farm system. That echoes the leap of faith the Tigers took on a raw, young player with line-drive, gap-to-gap power reminiscent of a teen-aged Miguel Cabrera or Avisail Garcia.

Campos is mindful of those expectations, but seemingly not weighed down by them.

We know we have a burden on our shoulders, he said. This pressure its the same pressure every professional athlete has. This is the only thing I know I can do. Im dealing with it.

8 Ways to Protect Yourself When Someone in Your Home Has COVID-19 – Healthline

Posted: November 20, 2020 at 3:57 am

Learning that someone you live with has tested positive for COVID-19 can cause concern for both of you.

This is an important situation to consider because we know that household members have a roughly 50 percent risk of infection when somebody living in their home is infected, Dr. David Hirschwerk, an infectious disease, internal medicine physician at Northwell Health, told Healthline.

In order to help and care for the person with COVID-19 while keeping yourself safe, consider the following eight tips from experts.

If someone in your home has tested positive for COVID-19, get a COVID-19 PCR test for yourself as soon as possible, said Dr. Scott Braunstein, medical director of Sollis Health in Los Angeles.

However, even if this is negative, it doesnt rule out early infection, when viral loads can be below the level of detection, causing a false negative test, Braunstein told Healthline. We know that the sensitivity of the tests increases dramatically at 5 to 7 days after last exposure, so you will want to obtain a second COVID-19 PCR test during or after that window.

To find testing near you, visit the website of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

If you are unable to obtain, or prefer not to be tested, quarantining for 14 days as long as you dont develop any symptoms, is another option, Braunstein said.

Anyone who came into contact with the person who has COVID-19 should be informed.

Household members and all other close contacts should be assumed to be positive, Braunstein said.

In its guidelines for caring for someone with COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that:

The person with COVID-19 should be quarantined for a minimum of 14 days from the onset of symptoms or positive test, and longer in severe cases, Braunstein said.

If youre in a tight space, keep the person with COVID-19 as far away as possible from others, said Dr. Bruce E. Hirsch, attending physician and assistant professor in the infectious disease division of Northwell Health.

The vast majority of time, the farther away from that person means [that] even if youre exposed, youre exposed to a lower dose, Hirsch told Healthline.

Theres a lot of very interesting information that shows a person who gets infected by a large viral amount gets much sicker than a person who gets infected by a small viral load, he added.

However, you can still care for the person, but only enter their space for necessities, he noted.

People who are living with the person who has COVID-19 should care for them by bringing them food and avoiding prolonged contact in the room, Hirsch said.

To improve ventilation in your living quarters, keep the windows open as much as tolerable, even it means turning up the heat.

This is especially important when remembering that indoors the virus can remain in the air in very small droplets and potentially infect others, Hirschwerk said.

The CDC states that the person whos sick should wear a mask when theyre around other people, and anyone living with them should wear a mask or face covering, too.

There should be a very low threshold for the use of masks (as much as possible) among all household members, particularly the infected individual, Hirschwerk said. Masks help contain respiratory infections from the nose and mouth of the infected person. But more recent data supports that masks protect individuals from becoming infected as well.

While wearing masks doesnt guarantee 100 percent protection against contracting the virus that causes COVID-19, Hirsch said doing so can reduce your chances.

A surgical mask is good, particularly if its well sealed. A cloth mask is better than nothing, Hirsch said. And if you dont have either, wearing a sweatshirt over your nose and mouth can provide a certain level of protection.

Wearing goggles when youre near the person with COVID-19 can protect from getting virus directly into the mucus membranes of the eyes, Hirsch added.

The CDC suggests maintaining good hand hygiene:

Washing hands is helpful and makes a lot of sense around a sick person, and [it] is important for the sick person to wash their hands, too, Hirsch said.

The CDC also recommends cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces and items every day, such as tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, sinks, and electronics.

The CDC suggests cleaning areas and items with soap and water, and then using a household disinfectant.

For a list of disinfectants, visit the Environmental Protection Agencys website.

Talk with your doctor about whether you should take a supplement, Hirsch said.

However, whats much more important is having a healthy diet and avoiding weight gain that is so easy to experience during this time of stress and uncertainty, he said. We know certain health conditions predispose a person for COVID-19 complications, and a lot of those health conditions can be addressed by lifestyle changes.

Adults with certain underlying medical conditions are at increased risk for severe COVID-19, hospitalization, ICU admissions, intubation or mechanical ventilation, and death, according to the CDC.

Conditions related to diet that put people at increased risk of severe illness include:

Having a healthful diet makes the body metabolically much more healthful and that makes a difference, Hirsch said.

While its tempting to listen to what friends, family, and those on social media say, listen only to trusted sources backed by experts when it comes to COVID-19 information and recommendations, Braunstein said.

Theres a lot of misinformation on social media and the internet that will recommend everything from taking massive doses of vitamins to taking hot showers as being effective in safeguarding you from getting the COVID-19 infection, Braunstein said. Most of these suggestions are either unproven or debunked, and some can even be dangerous.

Turn to sources, such as your primary care doctor, the CDC, or the World Health Organization.

Friends and family, however, can be great for expressing your feelings during difficult times.

If youve had a household contact test positive for COVID-19, its normal and natural to experience a variety of emotions, including fear, anxiety, depression, and loneliness, which can be profound and debilitating, Braunstein said.

Speaking about and expressing these feelings to a friend or relative can be very cathartic, and can improve your physical and emotional well-being, Braunstein added.
