New Delhi:We have all read in our school textbooks that the human body breathes in oxygen through the nose and mouth, which is then transported to the whole body with the help of various functions within the body. This oxygen is then used to provide life to all cells in the body and keep the body alive. However, as air pollution worsens around the world and the country, it seems that this fact is now slightly twisted. Apart from oxygen, we are currently breathing in various toxins and pollutants, which can cause serious health issues if not countered.

Air pollution and smog are major concerns for states like Delhi and those that are around it, especially in the winter months of November, December and January. This is the season when stubble burning in neighbouring states is common, which also contributes to the poor quality of air. Moreover, the festival of Diwali, which includes the practice of bursting crackers also adds to the problem. This year, post-Diwali, states of Delhi, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have seen a major spike in pollution levels, even as crackers were banned in many places to curb the potential health hazard.

Given the poor state of air we breathe in, it becomes very important to take care of our lungs. The food we eat has a direct impact on our health, and the same holds true for our lungs. Foods that are rich in antioxidants help to flush out the toxins in the body and aid in better functioning. According to studies as well, healthy diets, in general, have been linked to better health and a reduced risk of breathing disorders such as asthma, COPD, and others.

According to dietitian Upasana Sharma, Clinical Nutrition, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Gurgaon, in view of poor AQI levels that we are facing currently, its important to maintain and cleanse our lungs as they play a vital role in our body. Key nutrients required for efficient respiratory response include:

Heres why you should get a restaurant meal for Thanksgiving this year – San Francisco Chronicle

Posted: November 16, 2020 at 8:54 am

Im sure its no surprise to readers of this newsletter that Im not the worlds biggest booster of Thanksgiving. This fall, as the rates of COVID-19 infections in California have ballooned from our previously flattened curve, the sentimental logic of gathering for a holiday that celebrates colonization has felt even more tenuous than usual. But things are different this year. The risk of a major COVID-19 surge means we should definitely not, under any circumstances, host or attend huge blowouts with people we dont live with. Yet we may still have a major opportunity to center the holidays stated values of generosity and gratitude in the way we celebrate. This year, if you can afford it, I want you to pick up your dinner from a local food business.

For many, Thanksgiving is all about cooking up a great feast for your loved ones. But theres also value in seeing Thanksgiving 2020 as an opportunity to support the restaurants, pop-ups and other food businesses you want to keep around. This has been an awful year for the restaurant industry, owing to factors that restaurants and their workers couldnt truly control. With a bipartisan aid package including generous grants specifically earmarked for independent restaurants completely stalled in the U.S. Senate due to GOP leaderships unwillingness to seriously engage with it, we risk losing even more restaurants than we already have.

Beyond Janelle Bitkers great list of places offering Thanksgiving meals in the Bay Area, I have a few other suggestions. (Also check out my pie guide!)

Bayview Bistro, a food hub for Bayview food businesses, is offering some really stunning holiday boxes featuring Jamaican jerk turkey by Peaches Patties, roasted Japanese yams flavored with maple syrup by Gumbo Social and pumpkin cheesecake by Yes Pudding. The boxes are on sale until Wednesday November 18 and come in omnivorous and vegetarian variations.

Also in the Bayview are the Vegan Hood Chefs, who will be taking orders for their a la carte Hoodgiving menu until November 22. Im a fan of their vegan macaroni and cheese, so Im glad its on offer. The menu is an appetizing mix of Southern classics like gumbo and dirty rice and autumnal dishes like pecan apple walnut salad.

For people who really cant get enough pie (me), Maison Nico, a new market and cafe from the owners of Michelin-starred French restaurant Nico, is offering a turkey tourte that can feed 6-8 people. Encased in a dome of attractively scored pastry, the tourte contains a mixture of turkey, quince and chestnut. I would imagine itd be perfect with pickled cranberries on the side.

If youre feeling even more generous this year, you could also buy a meal for someone else. La Santa Torta, a roving quesabirria truck, has been offering pay-what-you-can meals to anyone who asks. You can donate to that effort on its website. Seor Sisig has also been taking donations to feed people facing food insecurity during the pandemic; so far, the Filipino-Mexican food truck business has raised less than half of its $100,000 goal. Horn Barbecue in West Oakland is hosting a free community meal on November 23 from 1-3 p.m. and is actively seeking volunteers. (If youre interested in helping out, email them!) And Mak-amham, the organization behind the Cafe Ohlone pop-up, has been doing farmers market food drop-offs for tribal elders in San Lorenzo. Theyre taking donations for that community work as well as building the next iteration of Cafe Ohlone.

While not restaurant-related, even more urgent is the need for volunteers among area food banks, who have been struggling to keep up with increased demand. The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank told The Chronicle that it now serves up to 60,000 families every week, though half of its volunteer shifts have gone unfilled this fall.

In a year like this, everyone needs all the help they can get. If youre in a position to pitch in, theres never been a better time to do it.

This week, Virgie Tovar, an author and podcast host, talks with me about diet culture: what it is, how it feels and how we can push against it in favor of a less punitive way of thinking about how we eat. Battling fatphobia is about more than just changing attitudes on a personal level, she says. She also sees healthcare reform and economic justice as integral to that fight. Justin and I also discuss how food writers and food media at large have perpetuated myths about diets and eating.

Some may balk at the price tag on the imported anchovies at the new Anchovy Bar six fillets with accoutrements range from $18-22 but the restaurant really hustles to make it worth it. Its all about building the perfect bite, with a twirl of salty, creamy fillet; a dollop of crme frache; crunchy shaved radish; and crisp toasted ciabatta. Youve likely never had anchovies like these.

The vegan guava sticky bun from Tavos Joint, a new Venezuelan spot in SoMa, is such a brilliant bite. The pastry, presented like a cinnamon roll, gets heavy floral notes from a double-punch of guava butter and fresh guava jam. It reminded me of the king cakes I would get around Mardi Gras from Normas, a Cuban bakery in New Orleans, which were filled with guava pasta and sweetened cream cheese. Oof.

In the South Bay, Pav Bhaji Huts trucks are the best place to try pav bhaji, a slow-cooked and deeply savory vegetable mash paired with toasty glazed rolls. The famous Maharashtrian street snack is rich with butter and layered with toasty cumin, black cardamom and other spices. As with tacos or pho, fresh garnishes of chopped raw onion, citrus and minces cilantro add a refreshing, sharp edge to the dish.

For Eater, writer Charlotte Druckman interviewed S.F. restaurateur Pim Techamuanvivit about what it takes to keep two restaurants open right now. Techamuanvivit is brutally honest here. I dont understand why its up to me as a small-business owner to search my conscience every month to decide whether or not to support my employees, she said at one point. Where is the conscience of this government, of this social system to support people? Where is the conscience of the country?

In case you missed it, I reviewed the takeout (?!) at the House of Prime Rib, the storied English-style steakhouse that people seem to love for its refusal to change.

And if youre curious about eating outdoors in the Bay Area but dont want to freeze your butt off, weve updated our outdoor dining guides to include information about heat lamps! Check out my Top Outdoor Dining list and Janelle Bitkers guide to spacious patios.

Mongolia’s Struggle to Close the Nutritional Gap – BORGEN – Borgen Project

Posted: November 16, 2020 at 8:54 am

SEATTLE, Washington In Mongolia, where crop cultivation is impossible for anywhere between six and nine months each year, vegetable consumption constitutes a privilege. The regional phenomenon of extremely dry summers and harsh winters, collectively known as the dzud, severely undermines agricultural yields and makes farming economically unattractive. With domestic producers routinely struggling to satisfy more than 60% of its vegetable demand and with 25% of its 3 million people experiencing food shortages, Mongolia is yet to close its nutritional gap, exemplified in the paucity of vegetarian dishes in the countrys culinary tradition.

There are several factors contributing to the size and persistence of Mongolias nutritional gap.

There are many reasons why Mongolia has not thus far succeeded in closing its nutritional gap by optimizing vegetable cultivation but there are just as many initiatives designed to help it create a robust agricultural infrastructure and expand its citizens access to fresh and affordable vegetables.

As early as in 2008, the government launched a campaign to boost private crop growth. Many years later, the country is self-sustaining in wheat and potato production, farmers are planting more than 30 different types of vegetables on some 700,000 hectares of arable land and the Crop Protection Fund (CPF) equips producers with seeds, fuel, heavy machinery and fertilizers, prior to the annual cultivation season.

Although farmers are expected to repay any outstanding debts to the CPF, they may always sell their seeds and grain after the harvest to the state, if their sales have not been as high as they anticipated.

The Food and Agriculture Organization is also present locally. ItsInput Supply to Vulnerable Populationsproject, operational between 2008 and 2009, assisted 9,000 rural households with efficient seed usage, water management and food production. It helped farmers gather some 600 tons of high-quality potato seeds at the end of 2009.

Simultaneously, the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) are jointly subsidizing the government program to train farmers in water usage, soil cultivation, pest control and greenhouse maintenance. Undertaken by Mongolias Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, this initiative has created 30 Community Greenhouse Groups, altogether consisting of some 180 farmers spread across four sites.

This work is estimated to cost $3.2 million and should help foster resilience and collaboration among the countrys vegetable producers.

In addition to nationwide efforts, the struggle to close the nutritional gap has attracted considerable grassroots involvement. In particular, religious communities have become platforms for people to join forces and resultantly maximize agricultural yields.

In the village of Erdenebulgan, the local Bahai worshippers have successfully been running a community vegetable garden since 1997. By collecting at least 100 kg of fresh vegetables each harvest, it has seen residents not just savor vegetables for the first time but also diversify their diets and improve health. The locals have even acquired climate-resistant seeds from Canada to maximize their output by planting the types of crops that could withstand their regions harsh weather conditions.

Similarly, the Buddhist Luvsandanzanjantsan Studies Centre, located in the town of Bayankhongor, has been working for more than 15 years on promoting healthy food consumption and growing vegetables and sugar beets in the area.

Another project, with which Mongolian Buddhists are fighting the countrys nutritional gap, is a communal garden in Gachuurt. The garden aims to help people access a more varied diet and generate income by selling surplus vegetables.

As the annual dzud curtails domestic production of vegetables and many Mongolians have been dissuaded from agriculture by their countrys past, Mongolia is not self-sufficient in vegetable cultivation; nor does it provide for the poor, whose unbalanced diets are disproportionately meat-based and conducive to health issues like obesity. Despite this, the scope of existing government, international and grassroots participation suggests that Mongolias struggle to close its nutritional gap could soon be nearing its end.

Weight loss: This man lost 30+ kilos with running and giving up processed food! – Times of India

Posted: November 12, 2020 at 4:01 am

I see myself being fit and continuing the goal I have in my mind. I know I am capable of doing much more and eventually, I will be able to do so. In the future, I also want to give it back to society and help others looking to achieve fitness levels.

What are the lifestyle changes you made? Slowly and steadily, I started dropping kilos but the journey was tough. Once you believe in something, you can achieve it by sheer determination and will power. In my fitness journey, I also gave up on certain staples. No sugar, no fried food, nothing from the bakery, no alcohol and absolutely no frozen or preservative products in our house! Making this big change has been absolutely beneficial.

What was the lowest point for you?

Initially, it was very tough. I could not even run for more than 2 minutes and there used to be massive breathing issues and after going back home my legs used to pain a lot. There were days I wanted to quit but then I used to think of my family and move ahead for them. As they say, my family is my biggest support system.

Lessons learnt from weight loss:

When it comes to fitness, there is nothing like instant results. You really need to give in time and hard work to see the results. Making the first move is the most important step in the fitness game. Dedication, determination and commitment are the three pillars of fitness, without which miracles cannot happen.

Winter Weight Loss: How To Make Methi And Ajwain Paratha For Healthy Breakfast – NDTV Food

Weight loss is no cakewalk, but with right food choices it can become much less daunting

Highlights

Planning to shed those extra kilos around your waist? Good idea, we say. Now that everybody has jumped upon the fitness bandwagon, why should you lag behind? Weight loss is no cakewalk, you would have to do away with some of your favourite food. But this does not necessarily mean that you have to adopt an alien diet and eat foods you have never even heard of, let alone tried. Scores of nutritionists recommend eating local and seasonal food, as the idea is to not shock your body. You would be surprised to know about the range of Indian foods that may help you through this phase. Indian food has an unfair reputation of being unhealthy, oily and calorie-laden. If consumed the right way, you could lose weight with the food you have grown up eating.

This methi-ajwain paratha could be seen as a fine example. Yes, parathas are known to be oily and greasy, but when you are making it at home, you can cut back on oil. And also opt for healthier flour like whole wheat. Whole wheat flour or atta is loaded with fibre. Fibre does not get metabolised too soon, imparting a feeling of fullness. If you feel full, you would naturally keep a safe distance from fattening snacks or nibbles and thus manage your weight loss in an effective way.

Paratha is a popular Indian breakfast

Speaking of fibre, the seasonal surprise methi is also enriched with copious amounts of good quality fibre that does not only keep your weight in check, but blood sugar levels too. Additionally, it is also an excellent source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Other flavourful additions to the paratha are ajwain or carom seeds, red chilli powder, coriander powder, green chillies, ghee and beans.

Together this combination makes for a heart and wholesome stuffing for the paratha. Once you have made kneaded the dough, make sure it is not too sticky or too tight, nobody likes tough parathas, right. Roll them out flat, grease your tawa with little bit of ghee. Ghee is actually considered as a better alternative to oil, by many nutritionists, for blood sugar and weight management. But do be very careful with the amount here. Too much of ghee may derail your weight-loss journey. Once your tawa is hot, cook the paratha on both sides. Serve hot with curd.

Weight Loss Linked to Reduced Disease Activity in Patients With Psoriatic Arthritis and Obesity – Rheumatology Advisor

Posted: November 12, 2020 at 4:01 am

Weight loss is associated with sustained improvement of disease activity and cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and obesity, according to study results published in Arthritis Research & Therapy.

The current prospective cohort study (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02917434) included patients with PsA and obesity from rheumatology clinics around Sweden. Inclusion criteria were 25 to 75 years of age; clinical PsA diagnosis; and a body mass index (BMI) of 33 or more. Patients received treatment with Very Low Energy Liquid Diet (VLED) during 12 or 16 weeks, followed by a structured reintroduction of food. Patients with PsA were age- and sex-matched with control participants without PsA who were also receiving VLED for obesity treatment. Participants underwent clinical examination at baseline and after 3, 6, 12, and 24 months. Disease activity was measured at each timepoint using various clinical measures, including 66/68 swollen/tender joints count, Leeds enthesitis index (LEI), C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ). All participants received BMI assessment and provided fasting blood samples at 12 and 24 months.

A total of 46 patients with PsA received VLED treatment, among whom 39 and 35 attended the 12- and 24-month visits, respectively. Patients who did not complete follow-up (n=11) were younger than those who continued the study (P =.005), though other characteristics were comparable between groups. At month 12, median weight loss among patients was 16.0% (interquartile range [IQR], 10.5%-22.4%) of baseline body weight. At month 24, median weight loss was 7.4% of initial body weight (IQR, 5.1%-14.0%). Swollen and tender joints count, LEI, CRP levels, and HAQ scores were all significantly reduced at the 12- and 24-month follow-up vs baseline. The number of patients with Minimal Disease Activity increased from 28.2% (n=11/39) at baseline to 38.5% (n=15/39; P =.008) at 12 months and 45.7% (n=16/35; P =.016) at 24 months.

Weight loss was also associated with improved CV and metabolic measures, including serum lipid, glucose, and urate levels. Antihypertensive treatment was stopped or reduced in 5 patients during follow-up.

Of the 52 control participants who received VLED treatment, 42 attended the 6-month visit and 39 attended the 12-month visit. Patients and control participants achieved similar degrees of weight loss at 6 and 12 months (P =.280). Mean changes in BMI, CRP, and serum urate were also similar among both groups.

The primary study limitation was the nonrandomized design; an untreated group of patients with PsA may have provided more information about the efficacy of VLED. However, a matched control group of patients without PsA also supported the benefits of VLED and weight loss.

The results of the study provide support to the hypothesis of obesity as a promotor of disease activity in PsA and shows what can be achieved by 5% [to] 15% weight loss in patients with PsA and obesity, the investigators concluded.

Weight Loss Surgery May Reduce Pancreatic Cancer Risk in Patients With Diabetes and Obesity – Curetoday.com

Posted: November 12, 2020 at 4:01 am

Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, significantly reduced the risk for pancreatic cancer in patients with obesity and diabetes, according to study results presented at UEG Week Virtual 2020.

Obesity and diabetes are well-known risk factors for pancreatic cancer via chronic inflammation, excess hormones and growth factors released by body fat, said Dr. Aslam Syed, fellow of gastroenterology and hepatology at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and lead author of the study, said in a press release. Previously, bariatric surgery has been shown to improve high blood sugar levels in diabetic patients, and our research shows that this surgery is a viable way in reducing the risk of pancreatic cancer in this growing, at-risk group.

In this study, data from 1,435,350 patients with obesity and diabetes were assessed over a 20-year period. Of these patients, 10,620 (73% women) underwent bariatric surgery, during which the digestive system is changed to help patients lose weight.

Patients who underwent bariatric surgery were less likely to develop pancreatic cancer compared with those who did not undergo the surgery (0.32% vs. 0.19%).

Clinicians should consider bariatric surgery in patients with metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity to help reduce the risk and burden of pancreatic cancer, said Syed.

In the press release, Syed elaborated on the importance of pancreatic cancer prevention, especially since survival has not improved in this area for decades. The average survival time at diagnosis is particularly bleak for this silent killer, at just 4.6 months, with patients losing 98% of their healthy life expectancy, said Syed. Only 3% of patients survive more than five years.

Weight-loss story: Meet the Indian expatriate in UAE who lost 29kg in one year – Gulf News

Posted: November 12, 2020 at 4:01 am

Baljeet Singh: Before and after Image Credit: Supplied

Dubai: Meet Baljeet Singh, an insurance consultant working in Dubai. Today Singh 33, weighs 68kg which at this height of 5 feet 10 inches gives him a BMI of 18. He has a fat concentration in his body that has plunged from 37 per cent to 11 per cent.

Singh, from Ludhiana in Indias northern state of Punjab, said he was able to lose his weight with sheer willpower, a simple nutrition plan and workout programme that he devised for himself. But the key is to remain balanced.

The weight loss journey began in November 2019. He told Gulf News, When I came to the UAE in 2015 at the age of 27, my weight stood at 85kg. I was overweight but still, it did nottrigger any alarm bells.

However, when Singh and his wife moved from Dubai to Sharjah for some time, their commute time went up since both worked in Dubai. I was spending at least four hours on the road, had no time for any health-related activities and when I reached home in the night, it was only to have dinner and go to bed. The stress was not helping at all, plus I was having a lot of junk food on the go, recounted Singh.

Soon, his old respiratory allergies came back. I had some allergies earlier and when I was experiencing trouble breathing, one of the doctors prescribed the asthma pump. I went in for a second opinion and was told I needed to cut back on unhealthy eating, had to work out and reduce weight. By then my weight stood at 97kg, an all-time high.

Drastic steps

So, the Singhs took some immediate and drastic steps. To begin with, they moved back to Dubai and cut out the travel time and stress. Singh was also inspired by his wife, Meenakshi, who has been fitness conscious. He did a thorough research on nutrition and work outs that would give him best results.

Singh said: I went on a Keto diet for the first 45 days with more fat and a small amount of protein. I cut out all carbohydrates, complete sugar, replaced it with stevia, although a vegetarian by choice, included eggs and chicken in my meals and within four weeks lost 9kg, which was a great kick-start to my metabolism, said Singh.

Singh said, My new diet was not balanced and one must not continue such diets for long. So I did not start working out immediately.

After the first four weeks, Singh introduced simple exercises including burpees, lunges and squats - 10 repetitions of three sets each. I also began consuming four litres of water and a strict routine of seven hours of sleep. I would go to bed by 9pm and arise at dawn at 4am.

Calorie deficit

Tailoring food for a calorie deficit coupled with regular workouts did the trick, he said.

Singhs resolve and discipline helped him knock off more weight progressively. During the lockdown, with less commute time, Singh was able to focus on his health plan better. Describing his one-year routine, Singh said: I involved no physical trainer or nutritionist. I had done all the research myself, made my notes and did my own cooking and figured out that I required a diet of 2,000 calories in a day. I would arise at 4am, get into the kitchen and cook my special meal. Everything was measured and I was careful with the micro and macro nutrients I needed for intake. I have worked out a diet of 1,500 calories and that means a deficit of 500 calories. Initially on keto, I would bake my own keto bread of almond flour, desiccated coconut and egg and saut vegetables. After this I would drive to my gym from 6-7.30am, after which I drove to work.

Within six months, Singhs weight stood at 67kg. After I achieved this amazing BMI of 18 and had worked on cutting out my fat percentage in the body, I am on a maintenance diet now. I have reverted to being a vegetarian and my food now includes low carbohydrate foods such as a tofu, cheese, a variety of vegetables, pulses and lentils, said Singh, who is feeling extremely light and energetic and has no health complaints.

His message to others looking to achieve weight loss goals: It is important to take charge of your health sooner than later. Eating healthy and being physically active is a lifestyle choice that you must adopt if you have to lose weight. There is no shortcut. Be focused, draw up a detailed plan, understand your body well and launch a determined and disciplined campaign. Success is a certainty.

Obesity is a chronic disease

At a time when obesity has been recognised as condition that can lower immunity and make individuals more prone to catching infections such as COVID-19, the World Obesity Foundation (WOF) has released a report specifically for the Gulf and Lebanon region.

29.9 per cent of adult population in UAE is obese

The UAE has been grappling with the issue of adult and childhood obesity and has introduced several health and nutrition reforms to raise awareness. The current 30x30 Dubai Fitness challenge bears testimony to the governments will to involve every resident in the fitness movement and work towards reduction of obesity levels.

According to another survey result conducted on the UAE population from 2007 to 20 which was published this year, about 29.9 per cent of the adult population in the UAE is obese as compared to 21. 5 per cent in 2017. With the rising trends on obesity it was important for the World Obesity Federation to prepare w new report.

Dealing with obesity the holistic way

The new WOF report is based on a virtual discussion that was held with top obesity specialists in the region. It stresses that the starting point to the delivery of comprehensive, multidisciplinary obesity care is the recognition of obesity as a chronic, progressive and relapsing disease by all stakeholders. The report recommends going beyond the accepted trend of defining obesity with measuring the Body Mass Index and actually tackling it with the use of the Edmonton Staged Approach. This approach encompasses other well-being criteria, including mental health and also identifies strategies that should be delivered through primary, secondary and tertiary levels of patient care.

Dr Sara Suliman co-author of the WOF report and a UAE-based consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist, explained, Standardising care for patients with obesity will help in recognition of obesity as a disease and will provide a framework for appropriate management of obesity to try and prevent as well as manage long-term complications.

She added that the WOF would be holding an obesity conference in the UAE from November 26-28 to highlight the theme of Obesity across the lifespan to raise awareness of the risks of obesity as early as in pregnancy, early childhood and then later in life.

This beetroot falafel would be a unique and interesting pick for the dinner menu. Missing desserts? Make this amazing beetroot modak and skip adding sugar or replace it with a healthier alternative.

Super rich in proteins and iron, spinach is everyone's favourite winter food. There's so much you can do with this green vegetable to round off your Diwali menu.

Replace the bowl of carbs-loaded potato chips and indulge in healthier palak chips instead. Indian sabzis like palak paneer and corn palak are good picks for the dinner table. You can pair the Indian meals with this palak raita.

Coconut adds a distinct nutty flavour, lends some creaminess and can also accelerate the weight loss process.
