Postpartum Weight Loss: What To Know About Exercise And Diet After Birth – Forbes

Posted: October 4, 2022 at 2:06 am

If youre looking for a jumpstart on your postpartum weight loss journey, read on for some specific tips recommended by experts.

As with any weight loss journey, slow and steady is the name of the game. Focus on good nutrition with healthy choices and portions, says Dr. Roskin. Eating foods high in fiber can help curb hunger and has been associated with weight loss. Mindfully incorporating protein into your diet has also been associated with decreasing appetite and improved weight loss, continues Dr. Roskin.

While its totally okay to occasionally indulge in a cookie or two, Dr. Roskin suggests avoiding refined carbohydrates, which are foods that contain high amounts of simple sugars and low amounts of fiber and other nutrients, such as desserts and white bread, when you can. They can be associated with weight gain and dont add much nutritional value, she says.

Some alternatives to refined carbohydrates include whole wheat bread, brown rice and quinoa.

If you come up with an ambitious exercise routine that doesnt actually spark joy, you likely wont stick with itso instead, find a type of exercise that really makes you happy. New moms are going to be really tired, says Dr. Ludgin. If youre not into running, I dont recommend that, because it wont make you happy. Go for walks with your new baby or go for walks on your own to give yourself personal time.

While more research is needed to truly determine whether or not breastfeeding has a huge impact on weight loss, because it burns calories, it can often be a solid starting point. Even if you are unable to exclusively breastfeed, pumping may also provide a boost in calorie burning, as the two mechanisms are very similar.

When working to lose weight postpartum, remember to go easy on yourself. The first year with a baby can present a whole host of new challenges, so consider stepping into the weight loss process gradually, and with patience.

Michael Mosley on the success of rapid weight loss diets – ‘I was gobsmacked!’ – Express

Posted: October 4, 2022 at 2:06 am

Rapid weight loss diets have long been marred with controversy and branded unhealthy, much like crash dieting to shift as much body weight as possible in a short space of time. But Dr Michael Mosley revealed that numerous studies have in fact proven the opposite and explained that if people do it "safely and properly" then they are "much more likely to succeed" than if they followed slower diets.

He referenced research conducted by weight loss specialist Professor Susan Jebbfrom Oxford University, who found rapid weight loss is the better option.

He said during an interview with the House of Wellness: "I was absolutely gobsmacked when I came across this research.

"Professor Susan Jebb told me that they know that the amount of weight you lose in the first four weeks [of a diet] predicts weight loss the next six months, a year, two years and five years, but rapid weight loss is motivating."

He recalled she set out to do big trial that would prove rapid weight loss is a "terrible idea", but she ended up proving the exact opposite.

On his Fast 800 diet, the TV doctor explained the foods are protein-rich as well as high in fibre and healthy fats.

Despite eating 800 calories a day, they are calories well spent in the form of foods that are consumed within a low-carb Mediterranean diet in order to feel full.

If following this weight loss technique, Dr Mosley recommends that adults consume at least 60g of protein daily.

If a person is wanting to burn fat fast, he suggests they up their protein intake to a larger amount.

He also claims that those who eat less than the recommended amount of protein could be harming their metabolic rate.

The diet guru said: "Your body will cannibalise your muscles and your metabolic rate will go down.

"Its really important to have a decent amount of protein, which is 50-70g a day.

"You can mainly get protein from meat or from fish, and you can also get it from legumes, but you have to eat rather more."

According to Healthline, a protein-rich diet helps to boost the metabolism as well as lead to an automatic reduction in calorie intake and cravings.

This is because high-protein foods help to suppress appetite, keeping slimmers fuller for longer.

"The reason for protein is you need it for your muscle," Dr Mosley said, revealing the Fast 800 also includes protein shakes or protein bars to help people increase their intake of the macronutrient.

"We do have meal replacement shakes which are very rich in protein and were also aiming to produce protein boosters, to help people who might otherwise struggle with it," he added.

The 11 Best Fruits for Weight Loss – Healthline

Posted: October 4, 2022 at 2:05 am

Fruit is natures ready-made snack packed with vitamins, fiber, and other nutrients that support a healthy diet.

Fruit is also generally low in calories and high in fiber, which may help you lose weight.

In fact, eating fruit is linked to a lower body weight and a lower risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, and heart disease.

Here are 11 of the best fruits to eat for weight loss.

Grapefruit is a cross between a pomelo and an orange and is commonly associated with dieting and weight loss.

Half a grapefruit contains just 39 calories but provides 65% of the reference daily intake (RDI) for of vitamin C. Red varieties also provide 28% of the RDI for vitamin A (1).

Whats more, grapefruit has a low glycemic index (GI), which means it releases sugar into your bloodstream more slowly. A low-GI diet may aid weight loss and weight maintenance, though evidence is limited (2, 3, 4, 5).

In a study in 85 obese people, eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice before meals for 12 weeks resulted in a decrease in calorie intake, a 7.1% decrease in body weight, and improved cholesterol levels (6).

Additionally, a recent review found that grapefruit consumption reduced body fat, waist circumference, and blood pressure compared to control groups (7).

While grapefruit can be eaten on its own, it also makes a great addition to salads and other dishes.

Summary Grapefruit is very lowin calories and high in vitamins A and C. It may be a healthy snack before mainmeals to help reduce your overall food intake.

Apples are low in calories and high in fiber, with 116 calories and 5.4 grams of fiber per large fruit (223 grams) (1).

They have also been found to support weight loss.

In one study, women were given three apples, three pears, or three oat cookies with the same calorie value per day for 10 weeks. The apple group lost 2 pounds (0.91 kg) and the pear group 1.6 pounds (0.84 kg), while the oat groups weight did not change (8).

Additionally, an observational study in 124,086 individuals determined that people who ate apples lost an average of 1.24 pounds (0.56 kg) per daily serving over a four-year period (9).

Because low-calorie fruits like apples are more filling, you may eat less of other foods during the course of the day. Notably, an apple is almost three times as filling as a chocolate bar (10).

Research shows that apples are best eaten whole rather than juiced to reduce hunger and control appetite (11).

That said, two studies link apple juice to reductions in body fat compared to a control drink with the same number of calories. Apple polyphenol extract made from one of the fruits natural compounds has also been linked to reduced cholesterol levels (12, 13, 14).

Apples can be enjoyed in a variety of ways both cooked and raw. Try adding them to hot and cold cereals, yogurt, stews, and salads, or baking them on their own.

Summary Apples are low incalories, high in fiber, and very filling. Studies indicate that they maysupport weight loss.

Berries are low-calorie nutrient powerhouses.

For example, a 1/2 cup (74 grams) of blueberries contains just 42 calories but provides 12% of the RDI for vitamin C and manganese, as well as 18% for vitamin K (1).

One cup (152 grams) of strawberries contains under 50 calories and provides 3 grams of dietary fiber, as well as 150% of the RDI for vitamin C and almost 30% for manganese (1).

Berries have also been shown to be filling. One small study found that people given a 65-calorie berry snack ate less food at a subsequent meal than those given candy with the same number of calories (15).

Additionally, eating berries may help decrease cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, and lower inflammation, which may be particularly helpful to people who are overweight (16, 17).

Both fresh or frozen berries can be added to cereal or yogurt for breakfast, blended in a healthy smoothie, mixed into baked goods, or tossed in a salad.

Summary Berries are low incalories and contain many important vitamins. They also may have positiveeffects on cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and inflammation.

Stone fruits, also known as drupes, are a group of seasonal fruits with a fleshy exterior and a stone, or pit, on the inside. They include peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, and apricots.

Stone fruits are low-GI, low-calorie, and rich in nutrients like vitamins C and A which make them great for people trying to lose weight (2).

For example, one medium peach (150 grams) contains 58 calories, while 1 cup (130 grams) of cherries provides 87 calories, and two small plums (120 grams) or four apricots (140 grams) have just 60 calories (1).

Compared to unhealthy snack foods like chips or cookies, stone fruits are a more nutrient-dense, filling option.

Stone fruits can be eaten fresh, chopped up in fruit salads, mixed into a hearty porridge, or even grilled or added to savory dishes like stews.

Summary Stone fruits likepeaches, nectarines, and plums make for a low-calorie, seasonal snack. They area good alternative to chips, cookies, or other junk foods.

Passion fruit, which originates in South America, grows on a beautiful, flowering vine. It has a tough outer rind purple or yellow in color with an edible, pulpy seed mass inside.

One fruit (18 grams) contains just 17 calories and is a rich source of fiber, vitamin C, vitamin A, iron, and potassium (1).

For such a small fruit, passion fruit holds ample dietary fiber. In fact, five of them give 42% of the RDI for fewer than 100 calories (1).

Fiber slows down your digestion, helping you feel fuller for longer and controlling your appetite (18).

Additionally, passion fruit seeds provide piceatannol, a substance linked to reductions in blood pressure and improved insulin sensitivity in overweight men. However, more research is needed (19).

For weight loss, passion fruit is best consumed whole. It can be eaten alone, used as a topping or filling for desserts, or added to drinks.

Summary Passion fruit is alow-calorie, high-fiber fruit that may benefit blood pressure and insulinsensitivity, potentially making it ideal for weight loss.

Rhubarb is actually a vegetable, but in Europe and North America, it is often prepared like a fruit (1).

While it has only 11 calories per stalk, it still packs almost 1 gram of fiber and almost 20% of the RDI for vitamin K (1).

Additionally, rhubarb fiber may help reduce high cholesterol, which is a common problem for people who struggle with their weight.

In a study in 83 people with atherosclerosis a disease of the arteries those given 23 mg of dried rhubarb extract per pound of body weight (50 mg per kg) for six months experienced a significant decrease in cholesterol and improved blood vessel function (20).

Rhubarb stalks can be stewed and served with porridge or your favorite cereal. Although it can be used in many ways, including in desserts, its best to stick to low-sugar rhubarb dishes when trying to lose weight.

Summary Rhubarb, which is lowin calories and high in fiber, may aid weight loss and help lower cholesterol.

Kiwifruits are small, brown fruits with bright green or yellow flesh and tiny black seeds.

Very nutrient-dense, kiwis are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin E, folate, and fiber, and have significant health benefits (1, 21, 22, 23).

In one study, 41 people with prediabetes ate two golden kiwis per day for 12 weeks. They experienced higher vitamin C levels, a reduction in blood pressure, and a 1.2-inch (3.1-cm) reduction in waist circumference (24).

Additional studies note that kiwi can help control blood sugar, improve cholesterol, and support gut health all additional weight loss benefits (25, 26, 27, 28).

Kiwis have a low GI, so while they do contain sugar, it is released more slowly resulting in smaller blood sugar spikes (29, 30).

Furthermore, kiwis are rich in dietary fiber. One small, peeled fruit (69 grams) has over 2 grams of fiber, while the skin alone provides 1 extra gram of fiber (1, 31, 32).

Diets high in fiber from fruits and vegetables have been shown to promote weight loss, increase fullness and improve gut health (33).

Kiwifruit is soft, sweet, and delicious when eaten raw, peeled, or unpeeled. It can also be juiced, used in salads, added to your morning cereal, or used in baked goods.

Summary Kiwifruits are highlynutritious and provide a range of health benefits. Their high fiber and lowcalorie content make them ideal for weight loss.

Melons are low in calories and have a high water content, which makes them very weight loss friendly.

Just 1 cup (150160 grams) of melon, such as honeydew or watermelon, provides a modest 4661 calories (1).

Though low in calories, melons are rich in fiber, potassium, and antioxidants, such as vitamin C, beta-carotene, and lycopene (1, 34).

Moreover, consuming fruits with high water content may help you shed extra weight (35).

However, watermelon does have a high GI, so portion control is important (2).

Melons can be enjoyed fresh, cubed, or balled to liven up a fruit salad. Theyre also easily blended into fruit smoothies or frozen into fruit popsicles.

Summary Melons are very low incalories and have a high water content, which may help you lose weight and keepyou hydrated.

Like all citrus fruits, oranges are low in calories while high in vitamin C and fiber. They are also very filling.

In fact, oranges are four times more filling than a croissant and twice as filling as a muesli bar (10).

While many people consume orange juice instead of orange slices, studies have found that eating whole fruits rather than drinking fruit juices not only results in less hunger and calorie intake but also increased feelings of fullness (36, 37, 38).

Therefore, if you are trying to lose weight, it may be better to eat oranges rather than drink orange juice. The fruit can be eaten alone or added to your favorite salad or dessert.

Summary Oranges are high invitamin C and fiber. Whats more, they can help keep you feeling full.

While bananas are more calorie-dense than many other fruits, they are also more nutrient-dense, supplying potassium, magnesium, manganese, fiber, numerous antioxidants, and vitamins A, B6, and C (1, 39, 40).

Their low to medium GI may help control insulin levels and regulate weight particularly for people who have diabetes (2, 3, 4, 41).

Additionally, one study illustrated that eating a banana per day reduced both blood sugar and cholesterol in people with high cholesterol (42).

High-quality, nutrient-dense, and low-calorie foods like bananas are vital to any healthy weight loss plan.

Bananas can be enjoyed on their own as a convenient on-the-go snack or added either raw or cooked to a wide variety of dishes.

Summary Bananas amplenutrients and fiber make them an ideal part of a healthy weight loss plan.

Half an avocado (100 grams) contains 160 calories, making it one of the most calorie-dense fruits. The same amount provides 25% of the RDI for vitamin K and 20% for folate (1).

Despite their high calorie and fat content, avocados may promote weight loss (43).

In one study, 61 overweight people ate a diet containing either 200 grams of avocado or 30 grams of other fats (margarine and oils). Both groups experienced significant weight loss, indicating that avocados are a smart choice for those looking to lose weight (43).

Other studies have found that eating avocados can increase feelings of fullness, decrease appetite, and improve cholesterol levels (44, 45).

Additionally, a large study of American eating patterns revealed that people who ate avocados tended to have healthier diets, a lower risk of metabolic syndrome, and lower body weights than people who didnt eat them (46).

Avocados can be used as a replacement for butter or margarine on bread and toast. You can also add them to salads, smoothies, or dips.

Summary People who eatavocados tend to weigh less than people who do not. Despite their high fatcontent, avocados may help promote weight loss and weight maintenance.

Fruit is an essential part of a healthy diet and may aid weight loss.

Most fruits are low in calories while high in nutrients and fiber, which can boost your fullness.

Keep in mind that its best to eat fruits whole rather than juiced.

Whats more, simply eating fruit is not the key to weight loss. You should also strive for a healthy, whole-foods-based diet alongside physical activity.

The main aim of Exipure is to boost the levels of brown adipose tissue in your body with the help of its plant-based ingredients. These ingredients are known to boost brown adipose tissues.

The brown fat does not store fat; rather, it helps in the process of fat-burning or fat-shrinking. Increased Brown fat levels help burn calories more often than increased white fat levels. Brown fat contains a network of densely-packed mitochondria that helps you burn calories more easily than white fat.

One of the properties of brown fat is that brown fat helps convert the food you eat into energy and not as fat cells in your body. This then helps increase the rate of metabolism, which makes losing weight or stubborn fat quick.

A low level of brown adipose tissue causes slow metabolism. This slow metabolism due to low brown fat levels makes individuals gain weight, thus leading to many excess weight gain diseases like Obesity. This could hamper your health severely by making your body a home to many health issues and problems.

Increasing the brown fat levels in your body denotes significant weight loss or healthy weight loss, thus making your weight loss journey easier and safer.

It is a known fact that as the body temperature falls down, the accumulation of low brown adipose tissue starts so that the body is kept warm during such times. This means that brown fat helps maintain your body temperature when you feel cold.

The presence of 2 ingredients - Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) and White Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng) helps strengthen your immune system.

Propolis is a sticky substance bees use to protect themselves and their hives. Propolis contains substances that kill bacteria and viruses. It also helps strengthen the hive walls.

Propolis comes from trees and plants. Bees collect propolis from tree buds and sap.

Some studies suggest that propolis might be effective against obesity. In one study, obese women took either a placebo or 400 milligrams of propolis daily. After 8 weeks, those who took propolis lost about 4 pounds. Those taking the placebo gained no weight.

The researchers concluded that propolis could be useful in treating obesity.

Propolis works by stimulating your body's metabolism. Your body uses energy faster than normal. This causes your body to burn calories even while you sleep.

A recent study found that propolis increases your metabolic rate. Researchers gave rats propolis supplements. Then they measured how much oxygen the animals needed to breathe.

They discovered that the rats' breathing rates increased. This suggests that propolis speeds up the way your body burns calories.

Olive oil is made from olives. Olive oil is high in monounsaturated fats. These fats do not raise blood cholesterol levels.

Monounsaturated fats reduce triglycerides in the blood. Triglycerides are a type of fat that raises bad LDL cholesterol.

One study showed that olive oil improves insulin sensitivity. Insulin resistance leads to diabetes.

Researchers studied the effect of olive oil on mice with diabetes. Mice that ate olive oil had lower blood sugar levels.

Another study showed that olive oil improved glucose tolerance in diabetic patients. Glucose tolerance tests showed that the subjects' blood sugar levels were better controlled.

Olive leaves contain oleuropein. Oleuropein has been shown to increase thermogenesis. Thermogenesis is the process of burning calories.

Thermogenesis is important for losing weight. When you eat less food, your body needs more energy to digest it.

Your body must work harder to break down the food. You need more energy to move around. To keep your muscles working, your body produces heat. Olive leaves have been shown to speed up this process. They seem to stimulate your body's metabolism.

Kudzu root is an Asian plant. Kudzu roots are used as a vegetable in China. Japanese people make kudzu tea.

In Japan, kudzu is called "kuzu." People there believe that kudzu can help them lose weight.

People drink kudzu tea because they think it will boost their metabolism. Some people take kudzu pills.

There is some evidence that kudzu may help control appetite. A study showed that kudzu extracts reduced hunger pangs. Other research shows that kudzu extracts may improve blood circulation. Blood flow is essential for good health.

Kudzu contains chemicals called iridoids. Iridoids are similar to glycosides. Glycosides are natural substances that occur in plants.

Iridoids are thought to affect the brain. They may slow down nerve impulses. Nerve impulses carry information between cells. Some scientists think that these compounds may act like hormones. Hormones regulate many functions in the body.

Other scientists think that iridoids may block certain receptors in the brain. Receptors are proteins that bind to specific molecules. When receptors bind to molecules, they trigger chemical reactions inside the cell.

Scientists think that iridoids interfere with the binding of neurotransmitters (hormone-like substances) to receptors. The result is slower nerve signals. This slows down the brain. It makes you feel tired.

Iridoids might also block other receptors. They could stop the release of other hormones.

Perilla is a flowering herb. Perilla is native to Asia. Perilla leaves are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants protect cells from damage by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable oxygen atoms.

Free radicals cause aging. They can harm healthy cells. Scientists think that perilla helps prevent cancer.

Some studies show that perilla extract reduces cholesterol. Cholesterol is a type of fat found in animal foods.

Perilla contains flavonoids. Flavonoids are antioxidant compounds. Flavonoids are believed to reduce inflammation. Inflammation causes pain and swelling.

A study showed that perilla extract helped burn fat. Fat cells store excess calories. Burning fat is one way to lose weight.

Perilla contains lignans. Lignans are phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are plant estrogens. Plant estrogens mimic human estrogen. Phytoestrogens are believed to lower bad cholesterol levels. Bad cholesterol clogs arteries. Arteries supply blood to organs.

Lignans may also increase insulin sensitivity. Insulin sensitivity means how well your body uses insulin. Insulin is a hormone that controls sugar. Insulin resistance lowers the amount of insulin your body needs. Lowering insulin resistance improves insulin sensitivity.

Another study showed that perilla oil increased the number of brown adipose tissue cells. Brown fat cells produce heat.

Brown fat burns calories instead of storing them. Perilla has been studied for its effects on diabetes. One study showed that perilla improved glucose tolerance in diabetic mice.

Amur cork bark is an herbal remedy used in traditional Chinese medicine. Amur cork bark is made from the inner bark of the tree Quercus mongolica.

The amur cork bark is used to treat diarrhea, fever, and stomach ache. In China, it is used as a tonic. In Japan, it is used to treat coughs and colds. In Korea, it is used to treat asthma.

Amur cork is known to have anti-inflammatory properties. Anti-inflammatories relieve pain and swelling. One study showed that amur cork bark extract lowered triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are fats stored in the liver. High triglyceride levels are associated with heart disease.

As people grow older, losing weight can become more tricky. And for one slimmer, she found losing her baby weight was near enough impossible after having children later in life.

Maxine Booth, an Enfiled-based lymphatic drainage therapist and model, gave birth to her firstborn when she was 36 years old and welcomed her second when she was 41.

But she struggled to shift the post-baby weight, admitting she found it "very difficult", especially as she was also going through a rough time in her marriage.

According to Baby Centre, six months after giving birth some women retain an average of 11.8lb, meaning that they weigh almost 12lb more than they did before they were pregnant.

With life getting in the way, Maxine's diet and exercise routine went out the window, and she found she wasn't shifting the pounds by sticking to a plan.

The technique can significantly reduce stubborn body fat and cellulite and help with muscle recovery, and Maxine found it worked wonders for her.

"After our interview, I decided to join her studio to see whether I could get some similar results," she said.

"I was amazed! I started losing weight and I had better skin and a lot more energy."

And it wasn't long before others began to notice a difference in Maxine as well.

"I had many people compliment me to the extent that I decided to open my own studio and help other women in my position and this is what I still enjoy doing today," she beamed.

And not only did she shed weight quickly and easily, but she maintained it too, something that was incredibly important to her after spending years being unhappy with how she looked.

She added: "In the end, I lost a whopping 1.5st in four months!

"After being the same weight for years, I have maintained that weight ever since."

Here’s How to Lose Belly Fat After 50, Say Physicians Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: October 4, 2022 at 2:05 am

Getting older has its advantages, but one downside of hitting 50 is it becomes more challenging to lose weight, but it's not impossible. With a few positive lifestyle changes, you can lose that stubborn belly fat that's a health concern because it can lead to other serious issues like heart disease, stroke and premature death. So while it may be more difficult, don't get discouraged. Eat This, Not That! Health spoke with experts who reveal how to eliminate abdominal fat and help keep it off. Read onand to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had COVID.

Dr. Suzanna Wong. a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic and health expert with Twin Waves Wellness says, "It is harder to lose weight after 50 because your body has different requirements. It's most notable for women who are going through the menopause, but not impossible. Their body deals with carbs differently, and the loss in estrogen means their muscles break down much quicker unless they are doing resistance exercise and eating a higher protein diet. With less muscle your metabolism falls meaning it seems harder to lose weight."

Robert Herbst a personal trainer, weight loss and wellness expert, and powerlifter adds, "One of the reasons it is harder to lose weight after 50 is age related loss of muscle. As people get older, they start to lose muscle. Since muscle is metabolically active, the less they have the slower a person's metabolism and the fewer calories they burn. Also, with less muscle, people generally become less active so they burn even fewer calories. As they gain more weight they become even less active and the situation compounds. The solution for this is to do strength training. By lifting weights one prevents or reverses age related muscle loss so your general metabolism will be higher. Also, after a weight workout the body's metabolism is elevated for 48 to 72 hours afterwards as the body recuperates. Additionally, as one builds more muscle through weight training, they will feel better and be stronger and are more likely to be active and engage in sports and recreational pursuits and do chores. All this adds up to more calories burned and easier weight loss."

Dr. Wong says, "Count calories. Make sure you are in a calorie deficit and belly fat will start to fall."

Pam Sherman, a certified personal trainer with The Perfect Balance recommends "creating a small calorie deficit for overall weight loss. This is the best way to lose weight by being accountable for what a person is eating/drinking."

Dr. Wong suggests, "Drink enough water. For women 2-3 liters a day, for men 4 liters a day. This helps your body to work effectively and reduces your cortisol levels, helping you to drop body fat from your tummy."6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Caroline Grainger, ISSA Certified Personal Trainer at FitnessTrainer.reminds us, "Belly fat is stubborn. You're not going to zap it with a quick diet or one neat trick. It's going to take sustained intentional eating that you can stick to in order to really succeed. Your ultimate goal comes down to creating a calorie deficit."

Grainger states, "Good cardio workouts like walking, jogging, biking, swimming, and racket sports, are the best ways to burn calories quickly, and they're also the lowest-impact forms of exercise on your body, meaning you'll be able to keep up the habit."

Sherman emphasizes, "Get enough sleep! When our brains are tired, we crave sugar. Getting regular sleep can make it so much easier to keep your food on track!"

Jesse Nicassio, former NFL player and CEO of Juke Gyms says, "Although fruit juice contains vitamins and minerals, it contains the same sugar as soda and other sweetened beverages. Drinking in high quantities may pose the same danger to belly fat growth. Unsweetened apple juice has 24 grams of sugar in an 8-ounce (240-mL) drink, half of which is fructose. Replace fruit juice with water, unsweetened iced tea, or sparkling with a wedge of lemon or lime to help reduce excess belly fat."

"This not only brings your calories down but more importantly will help to reduce your visceral fat, which is fat stored around your organs and always appears as belly fat," explains Dr. Wong.

World Heart Day: Can quick weight loss lead to heart attack? Experts answer – Hindustan Times

Posted: October 4, 2022 at 2:05 am

World Heart Day 2022: Shedding kilos and achieving an ideal weight can help reverse a number of chronic health conditions from high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol to even heart ailments. But rapid weight loss can do the opposite and may worsen the heart function let alone improving it. Weight loss for heart health should be done in a healthy, sustainable and steady manner to reap the maximum benefits of it, According to experts, the wrong methods to attain quick weight loss may work against our heart health. For instance fad diets or low-calorie diets can lead to heart function which may eventually lead to heart attack. Excessive exercise to lose kilos is also deterimental to heart health and it is increasingly becoming common for people to suffer heart attack in gyms. (Also read: World Heart Day 2022: Can screaming, losing temper trigger a heart attack? Experts answer)

"Low-calorie diets or crash or the starvation' diet for a rapid weight loss are becoming very popular these days, There is enough evidence that weight loss in overweight or obese person can reverse the effects of high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol on heart, with almost half of the patients being able to stop or reduce the medications. But the effects of crash diets or rapid weight loss on the heart have not been studied very well so far," says Dr Sanjeev Gera Director & HOD, Cardiology, Fortis Hospital Noida.

Dr Gera explains how a low-calorie diet could lead to heart enlargement and subsequent heart failure.

"The heart muscle prefers fats or sugar as its fuel for effective functioning. It takes up all the fats released into the blood circulation from adipose tissues or organs following a very low-calorie diet. So, rather than improving heart function, it worsens because of more fat than muscle with fewer blood vessels. That can lead to heart enlargement and subsequent heart failure when the heart becomes too weak and unable to meet the requirements of other organs, compromising its functions ultimately.

The sudden drop in heart function rate can lead to fatal heart rate and rhythm problems or arrhythmias, sometimes leading to sudden collapse and even a cardiac arrest. It can also cause low blood pressure due to dehydration and electrolyte loss, further compromising organ functions. Sudden malnutrition can also affect heart wellness," says Dr Gera.

People also take to excessive gymming to lose weight quickly in a short span of time. If you are not used to such routine, your heart function can be affected and this may lead to a heart attack.

"It is very common that people suffer heart attacks while exercising, in the gym or outdoor. While exercise keeps your body in good shape, and also cardiovascular condition, if youre not accustomed to a difficult routine and you try to do too much too soon, it may disrupt the way your heart pumps blood and oxygen through your system. More people die because of Cardiac arrhythmia. The term "arrhythmia" refers to any change from the normal sequence of electrical impulses. The electrical impulses may happen too fast, too slowly, or erraticallycausing the heart to beat too fast, too slowly, or erratically. This causes ineffective blood pumping leading to less blood supply to other vital organs. Always keep checking regularly with a cardiologist before starting or doing any exercise," says Dr. (Mr) Kiran Rukadikar, Bariatric Physician and Obesity Consultant, and founder of DietQueen App.

"Losing weight is a slow and conscience process. Rapid weight loss is not good for your heart. It can cause dehydration, low blood pressure, electrolyte imbalance which can further cause arrhythmia, exacerbate heart failure and even cause sudden cardiac arrest in some," says Dr. Aditya Kumar Singh, Sr Consultant & HOD, Adult Cardiac Surgery at Marengo QRG Hospital, Faridabad.

Losing weight too fast is putting yourself at risk. Crash diets can lead to irregular heart rate (abnormal electrical activity of heart), fluctuation in heart rate and blood pressure. By missing important nutrients in diet may increase the risk of heart failure. Rapid weight loss can lead to severe dehydration triggering blood clot formation in susceptible individual. This can lead to heart attacks and blood clot formation in great arteries of heart, says Dr. Vikrant Khese, Consultant Cardiologist, Apollo Clinic.

Dr Gera says weight loss should be gradual with the aim of losing around 500 gm every week but with proper care of fluid and nutrient intake.

"Before adopting a very low-calorie diet, one should consult a cardiologist for a safe diet and exercise prescription and also diagnose pre-existing silent heart ailments. Losing extra kilos is always a good idea for heart health but starvation may lead to serious and irreversible heart issues," says Dr Gera.

Want To Eat Carbs Without Gaining Weight? Health Experts Say You Should Follow This Rule – SheFinds

Posted: October 4, 2022 at 2:05 am

From pasta to potatoes, some of our favorite foods contain carbohydrates. For many, these foods have a reputation that involves sabotaging weight loss, but experts tell us this isnt necessarily true as there are different types of carbs. We checked in with registered nutritionists, dietitians and other health aficionados for tips regarding eating a balanced diet with fiber-filled carbs and still being able to lose weight healthily. Read on for suggestions and insight from Lisa Richards, registered nutritionist and creator of The Candida Diet and Emilie Rice, MS, RDN, LDN, CSCS, CPT, registered dietitian and health expert.

The 100+ Best Beauty Launches Of 2022

An essential tip for a healthy diet with carbs and losing weight, Richards says, is knowing the difference between the types of carbs you consume. "Opposed to popular belief among health and fitness enthusiasts, carbs are not the enemy to weight loss," Richards explains, "In fact, the body requires carbs as its primary source of fuel. It is the quality of carbohydrates and how they are prepared that can make weight loss difficult."

Shutterstock

Carbohydrates are classified into two categories, Richards adds simple and complex. "Simple carbohydrates include carbs from processed and refined foods like convenience snacks," she continues. Richards notes that the simple ones are considered "bad carbs, but also come from milk and some fruits." This form of carbohydrate, she goes on, is "broken down quickly and used immediately by the body for energy."Complex carbohydrates are considered "good and include whole grains like oats and plant-based carbs like quinoa or brown rice are more nutrient-dense," Richards stresses, and "offer the body more than a quick glucose spike and stored fat." The fiber content of whole grains alone will help you reach your weight loss goals, Richards points out.

Shutterstock

The first tip Rice offers when creating a healthy diet for yourself is to select "high-fiber carbohydrates." These, she says, are your fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. "Fiber helps you feel fuller sooner, which can help you consume fewer calories, thus helping you lose weight," she explains. Next, Rice says to snack smart by pairing carbohydrates with protein. "Think of a half banana with 1 tablespoon of almond butter, or 1/3c peaches with 1/2 c cottage cheese." The fruit, she suggests, provides fiber and high-quality carbohydrates, "satisfying your carb craving while the protein (almond butter and cottage cheese in these two examples) helps to slow the release of carbs into your bloodstream and help you feel full longer from your snack."

Lastly, Rice recommends asking yourself if your eyes are bigger than your stomach when preparing meals or snacks for yourself. "Use your fist to monitor portion sizes, this way you can satisfy your carb craving and consume them in moderation," she offers. Rice concludes that chewing slowly can also help you on your weight loss journey. "Chew slowlya lot of us eat mindlessly or rush through eating. By slowing down, thoroughly chewing your food, and eating mindfully, you give your brain time to communicate with your stomach to recognize when it's truly full." This, Rice notes, can "reduce your chances of eating too many carbs (and overeating in general)."

9 Fast-Food Breakfasts To Stay Away From Right Now Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: October 4, 2022 at 2:05 am

In a perfect world, there's always time to start the morning with a healthy breakfast. Yogurt, oatmeal, chia pudding, and a veggie omelet sound perfect, but sometimes you just don't have the time and energy to make a whole meal from scratch or even sit down and eat it.

Many of the top fast-food restaurants across America have found ways to fill this niche and give morning commuters something easy to eat on their way to work. While you shouldn't have a hard time finding a quick bite on the move, not every fast-food breakfast checks off all the nutritional boxes if you want to watch your diet. A ton of menu items pack in fat, carbs, sugar, and salt in order to help make certain items delicious. While these options have found their fair share of fans, these foods also can easily derail any eating plan.

With so many less-than-wholesome fast-food breakfast items on the market, trying to figure out which ones to avoid feels like a nightmare. Luckily, Eat This, Not That! consulted a handful of experts to narrow down the 9 worst menu items you need to cross off your list. If you don't have the time to start your day any other way, make sure you grab one of the 12 Healthy Fast Food Breakfasts Under 360 Calories next time you visit your favorite fast food restaurant in the morning.

PER 1 MUFFIN: 590 calories, 24 g fat (8 g saturated fat), 65 mg cholesterol, 370 mg sodium, 88 g carbs (2 g fiber, 51 g sugar), 7 g protein

"Not all muffins are created equal, and most are just chock full of refined carbohydrates, sugar, and fat," Trista Best, RD at Balance One Supplements, said. "While there are some versions of muffins that can help you in your health goals this is unfortunately not the case for the most popular."

The danger of the Dunkin' Coffee Cake Muffin lies in the massive amount of sugar packed into each pastry, in addition to the huge portion of refined carbs.

"Refined carbs, also known as simple or processed carbs, are grains that have been stripped of their beneficial nutrients like fiber, B vitamins, and iron making them empty calories, Best continued. "They are quickly processed by the body which raises blood glucose and insulin rapidly after meals. These characteristics all lead to a slow metabolism and weight gain. As the body is not obtaining beneficial nutrients from the refined carb muffins, but rather inflammatory and gut damaging nutrients."

If you crave a muffin and need to stick to a healthy eating plan, you can't go wrong making these pastries at home. Opt for 16 Cozy Muffin Recipes That Are Perfect for Weight Loss and discover your new favorite muffin.

PER 1 BAGEL: 450 calories, 9 g fat (2 g saturated fat), 0 mg cholesterol, 550 mg sodium, 83 g carbs (2 g fiber, 30 g sugar), 9 g protein

The Dunkin' Coffee Cake Muffin can't do your diet any favors, but it isn't the only fast food breakfast offering that loads up on a walloping amount of carbs. Einstein Bros' Apple Cinnamon Bagel ends up looking much closer to a pastry thanks to the massive amount of carbs and sugars the bagel packs in per serving.

"A bagel on its own is just empty carbohydrates with very little fiber," Juliana Tamayo, RD, MS at LDN at FitnessClone.com said. "Most people eat bagels with only cream cheese, which does not add any fiber or protein to your diet. In most cases, bagels are high in carbohydrates and are absorbed quickly, making your satiety short-lived." If you need to watch your daily diet, avoid this very sweet bagel.

PER 1 BISCUIT: 850 calories, 61 g fat (25 g saturated fat, 0.5 g trans fat), 365 mg cholesterol, 2,380 mg sodium, 46 g carbs (0 g fiber, 5 g sugar), 31 g protein

If you need to hit the road and don't have time for a proper breakfast, Carl's Jr. Monster Biscuit sounds tempting, especially if you wake up hungry. While this biscuit sandwich comes with sausage, bacon, cheese, and eggs, it also packs in almost half of a day's worth of calories and a ton of fat in each serving. The salt content of this biscuit sandwich exceeds the FDA recommendation of sodium you should eat each day, while the bacon in this sandwich takes the item to whole new unhealthy levels.

"Regular bacon is a fan favorite, but not necessarily a good breakfast option," Tamayo said. "It is high in sodium, saturated fats, and nitrites. Bacon is going to raise your blood cholesterol levels, while also causing fluid retention due to excess sodium. Nitrites are also known carcinogens present in deli meats and usually used [to] keep products from [spoiling]."

If you need a new breakfast sandwich, don't settle for a calorie-packed biscuit. Instead, reach for 16 Delicious Breakfast Sandwich Recipes You Won't Believe Are Healthy.

PER 10.2-OZ SERVING: 370 calories, g fat (4.5 g saturated fat), 15 mg cholesterol, 170 mg sodium, 65 g carbs (3 g fiber, 45 g sugar), 11 g protein

At first glance, this unassuming yogurt parfait might not seem that bad, especially in comparison to greasy breakfast sandwiches or sugar-packed muffins. Underneath this blueberry yogurt's healthy-looking exterior lurks a ton of sugar that can easily derail your day before it even starts.

"Although yogurt is usually recommended, there are some types you might want to avoid," Tamayo said. "In general, plain flavored yogurt is high in sugar and preservatives and has very little protein. Greek yogurt is the recommended kind because it contains more protein and probiotics. Regular yogurt is high in calories and will often have very little protein. It can cause high blood sugar and will not keep you full [for] long."

Steer clear from this sugar-packed yogurt, even if it sounds like a healthy option

PER 1 STICK: 540 calories, 30 g fat (15 g saturated fat), 30 mg cholesterol, 430 mg sodium, 66 g carbs (1 g fiber, 37 g sugar), 4 g protein

Few breakfast options pack in the sugar and fat like donuts. These calorie bombs have the potential to undo all of your weight loss progress and can leave you feeling sluggish. "[Donuts are] made of highly processed flour, cooked in oil and with added sugar," Blanca Garcia, RDN at Health Canal said. "So sugar on top of sugar on top of fat [is] just carbs and fat."

While single donuts on their own easily rank as one of the most unhealthy breakfast offerings out there, they aren't all created equal. Dunkin's Glazed Jelly Stick ranks as one of the worst out there, thanks to each item containing a whopping 66 grams of carbs, almost half of a day's worth of fat, and over half of a day's worth of sugar.

Donuts in general won't do your diet any good. In addition to ditching this Glazed Jelly Stick, make sure to avoid The Worst Fast-Food Donuts in America.

PER 1 SMOOTHIE WITH PEANUT BUTTER: 770 calories, 26 g fat (5 g saturated fat), 0 mg cholesterol, 150 mg sodium, 130 g carbs (15 g fiber, 95 g sugar), 14 g protein

On paper, a breakfast smoothie looks irresistibly healthy. After all, these drinks come loaded with fruit and other nutrients, making them seem like the perfect way to quickly drink your breakfast and get all the nutrition you need to start your day.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Unfortunately, many breakfast smoothies also come loaded with calories, fat, and sugar, and Tropical Smoothie Cafe takes the cake with their signature Chia Banana Boost with Peanut Butter. This morning smoothie finds a way to deliver almost half of a day's worth of calories in one serving, while easily loading you up on sugar before you even get to lunch. If you need a healthy breakfast smoothie, stay far away from this offering.

PER 1 ORDER: 760 calories, 48 g fat (18 g saturated fat), 485 mg cholesterol, 1,530 mg sodium, 57 g carbs (3 g fiber, 3 g sugar), 26 g protein

"In general, the worst thing you can buy are the ultra-deluxe or premium-style breakfasts," Garcia said.

"For breakfast, the general rule is to eat well and heartily," Garcia continues. "The problem with these foods is that they are very high in fat, and the portions are too large. At home, you have more control over the fat and salt that is added to your meals, but not so much at fast food chains." The McDonald's Big Breakfast takes the cake when it comes to loading you up with poor nutrition in the morning. The item features about half of your day's worth of salt in one serving and doubles down with a ton of fat.

Certain McDonald's breakfast offerings prove better for your health than others. If you can't stand the idea of completely abandoning McDonald's in the morning but still want to eat healthy, make sure you select an item from McDonald's Entire Breakfast MenuRanked For Nutrition!

PER 5-PIECE ORDER: 500 calories, 19 g fat (3.5 g saturated fat), 0 mg cholesterol, 620 mg sodium, 74 g carbs (3 g fiber, 13 g sugar), 19 g protein

Whipping up a healthy French toast at home doesn't have to be impossible, but all bets are off when you grab French toast-themed items at fast-food restaurants.

"French toast typically [has] high amounts of sugar due to the syrups and toppings on [it]," Jesse Feder, RDN, CPT at My Crohn's and Colitis Team says. "Additionally [French toast does] not provide much in regards to nutritional value. [It is] usually made with highly processed ingredients that can spike your blood sugar and cause weight gain."

Carl's Jr. offers up one of the most unhealthy fast food breakfast options out there thanks to their French Toast Dips that come loaded with carbs and fat. While these French toast sticks offer up a quick bite in the morning, steer clear of these if you need to eat healthy.

PER 1 CRUNCHWRAP: 730 calories, 47 g fat (15 g saturated fat), 140 mg cholesterol, 1,290 mg sodium, 52 g carbs (4 g fiber, 3 g sugar), 20 g protein

Taco Bell struck gold when they put the Crunchwrap Supreme on its menu. Thanks to the item's popularity, it continued to evolve and Taco Bell even found a way to add it to their breakfast menu. While the Crunchwrap continues to win over morning commuters, it also finds a way to put a major dent in diets thanks to its massive fat, salt, and carb content. While the item comes loaded with cheese and sausage, the inclusion of fried potatoes doesn't make this item any healthier. "Fried potatoes [] have high amounts of fats, more specifically saturated fats, which can clog your arteries," Feder explains.
