Walking Helps Lose Weight, Stay Healthy, and Stay Sober – Prevention Magazine

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:09 am

Today, I run 100 mile racesbut I didnt used to be this way. About five years ago I started a simple walking journey that completely changed my life. I used to weigh 446 lbs and I began walking with the goal of losing weight, and I have since lost over 200 lbs. Eventually my walking journey led to running, but I have walking to thank for so many amazing changes in my life.

Feeling inspired to start walking? Register for our free virtual 5K walk on Saturday, October 1, 2022, and become a part of a community of thousands of walkers! Sign up here. Have your own walking story? Wed love to hear it! Tell us here for a chance to win a Nathan gift card.

Before and After

It began with bending down to tie my shoes. I remember one day specifically when I noticed how difficult this simple task had become: I would have to hold my breath because I was so big. I decided I couldnt do it anymoreI had to make a change. And it was unbelievable how quickly daily walks helped me feel better. With every walk I could feel the difference and the progress almost instantaneously, and sure enough, one week Id only be able to walk under a half mile, but the next week Id complete that half mile, and the next week I could reach a full mile. It was very satisfying to be able to see such a big change in such a short period of time, and I became hooked.

My favorite thing about walking is that it helps me to clear my mind while Im out thereIm really an outdoors person, so its great to have time outdoors on foot strolling around and seeing new things. Its definitely not just a weight-loss thing for meits almost like a form of counseling, just a very relaxing, all-around healthy habit.

Its really amazing to now be able to walk with my son and my wife because it was something that when I was really big, I couldnt do. Now that I can go for these walks, I just want to walk all the time! When I was big, my heels would hurt and I couldnt really go too far. So when I was able to walk it became really exciting. Something so simple that most people dont think about became so important. It almost became addicting, to be able to do simple things like walking.

When I walk with my family we like to stroll through various parks and trails, and its great to be able to talk about what we see around us and about our days. We can chat about whats on our minds and how school is going, and really just everything you usually dont discuss when sitting around inside the house because the television or the phone is distracting you. I also enjoy taking solo walks either on the beach or in the city. I could easily walk for hours through the city streets because there's so many different things to see, and each time you take a different route, you'll see something new that you normally wouldn't see if you were driving.

Overall, its just very satisfying to be able to change for the better, and walking helped with so many things in my life aside from my mental and physical health, and my relationship with my family. Walking also helped me to stop drinking. It just completely changed my life. There was one walk I had with my wife when I was on my journey to becoming sober and it really helped to put things in perspective and keep me motivated to be the person I know I can be. If it wasnt for these walks that had become such an integral part of my routine, that likely wouldnt have been a conversation.

When I have days where I struggle with staying motivated, I just remember where I came from and that always reminds me to keep active even when I dont want to. Staying engaged on social media helps a lot too, because it makes me feel so great to know that I can help inspire others to change for the better just like I have.

It's crazy how one simple thing like walking can change the outcome of something so big. My advice to others would simply be to just not over-complicate it: Dont worry about how far youre going or for how long, just go outside and enjoy whatever youre able to do. You never know what walking can do for you. Its amazing where it got me: I lost 200 pounds, got sober, and improved my relationship with my family.

Walking is easily taken for granted, but it can change big things in your life.

Bake Off’s Matt Lucas shares heartbreaking health reason he had to lose weight – Daily Star

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:09 am

Great British Bake Off host Matt Lucas has shared his heart-breaking health feats that led to him having to lose weight.

Viewers of the Channel 4 baking show are concerned for the star after seeing how much weight he has shed in recent months - but there is a reason behind his drastic lifestyle overhaul.

The former Little Britain comedian has gone from a size XXXL to a size medium - by changing two things in his life.

Matt simply ate less and walked more, and was able to shed the pounds in order to turn his life and health around.

The reasoning behind his lifestyle overhaul was because he was afraid that he would suffer the same fate as some of his family members.

Both his dad and grandad sadly died young from heart attacks in their fifties, which is why the star, 48, wanted to ensure his health was in tip-top condition in order to sustain him through his life.

"My dad died when he was 52, very suddenly. His dad died, I think at 56, so I was looking at the law of averages," he revealed.

"I was very big and I was getting bigger in the pandemic. Sort of not being very active, not really going out, not seeing people, just eating a lot. I was so big I couldnt really fit on screen any more."

Speaking on the Mid Point podcast, he said: "Ive still got a proper tummy, Im not skinny by any means. Ive just lost some weight. Ive gone from maybe a double XXL, sometimes triple XXXL, down to a medium.

"I do feel a bit better, I feel a bit relieved. Because the thing is, I dont do any drugs and I dont smoke and I hardly ever drink. So its just the food really.

"I just dont eat as much, but I eat sweets still. I like to walk. I live not far from a canal and I love when the weathers nice going for long walks there."

When fans saw Matt on-screen for GBBO earlier this months, they flooded Twitter with reactions.

One person said: "Holy heck at the weight loss of @RealMattLucas - he looks really well."

While other people seemed concerned, with someone saying: "Woah, I don't know whether to be happy for Matt Lucas at his weight loss or worried..."

Lifting Techniques: How to Move Heavy Things – Healthline

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:08 am

Lifting heavy items should be done carefully in order to prevent injury.

In fact, 38.5% of work-related musculoskeletal issues are related to back injury, with improper lifting being one of the main causes.

Therefore, its important to learn proper lifting techniques to keep yourself safe at work and at home.

This article discusses proper lifting techniques and common lifting problems, and provides useful tips.

The best lifting technique is to squat down and use the strength of your legs instead of your back to lift the object off of the ground.

That said, you should only lift items that youre comfortable lifting. If youre unsure, its best to ask another person for help or use other machinery (e.g., a lift).

If youve decided that its safe to lift the item by yourself, youll want to follow the proper lifting technique guidelines outlined by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Before moving something heavy, its important to think and plan first.

First, look at the item that youre about to lift and ask yourself these questions:

Taking note of your environment, the item you plan to lift, and other considerations can help you decide if this item is a one- or two-person job or requires other assistance, such as machinery.

Just like youd warm up before a workout, you should also warm up and stretch your muscles before lifting.

Ideally, spend a few minutes doing some dynamic stretching (e.g., lunges, lower back rotations, arm circles) to prepare your muscles and get your blood flowing.

To lift safely, you first want to make sure that youre in the right positioning.

Youll also want to make sure that you bend your knees, squat down to grab the item, and use the strength of your legs to do most of the lifting. This can help to lower back and other muscular injury.

Here are the steps to safely lift a heavy item:

If needed, slowly take small steps to walk to the spot you plan to put the item. If its far, you should consider placing the item on a cart or other form of transportation.

If you need to change directions, lead with your hips and ensure your shoulders stay aligned with your hips. Continue to keep the load as close to your body as possible.

Setting an item down is the same movement as lifting but in reverse:

If the item will be placed above the ground (e.g., on a counter or table), walk up to the surface and place it gently on top. If its slightly lower than hip level, be sure to still bend your knees and lower your body to place the item down safely.

While no one intends to hurt themselves, its quite common to injure yourself while lifting heavy objects. The most common lifting problems include:

By lifting properly and avoiding these common lifting problems, you can help lower your risk of injury.

To prevent injury, consider these helpful tips:

To ensure your safety, always practice safe lifting techniques.

The best lifting techniques involve using your legs to lift heavy objects instead of your back, since your legs are some of your strongest muscles while your back is more susceptible to injury.

Youll also want to make sure that youre planning ahead, only lifting objects you feel comfortable lifting by yourself, and being just as mindful when you place the item down as when you lift it.

And remember, you should always ask for assistance if you have any concerns. Its better to be safe than to risk injuring yourself.

Maintenance and Weight Loss Calorie Calculator Forbes Health – Forbes

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:08 am

The Forbes Health Calorie Calculator estimates the number of calories your body uses each day. If you want to lose weight, it calculates the number of daily calories you need to consume to achieve your weight loss goal. It also displays how long it will take you to reach your goal weight safely.

To Maintain Your WeightTo calculate your daily calorie needs to maintain your weight, the calculator considers your:

Each of these components requires a different amount of calories.

1. Your RMR requires the most energy, far more than physical activity or food processing. It can be measured scientifically in a lab or estimated using an equation. In this calculator, your RMR is measured using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. Its the most reliable formula, according to a review of studies in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. It calculates your RMR based on your sex, weight, height and age.

2. Physical activity burns calories, so athletes need to consume more calories than people who dont exercise. An activity factorranging from 1.2 for people who are sedentary to 1.9 for extremely active peopleis assigned based on your physical activity level. The calculator then multiplies your RMR by this number.

3. The thermogenic effect of food makes up the remainder of your daily energy needs (approximately 10%). To find this number, the calculator takes your RMR multiplied by your activity factor and multiplies that number by 10%.

To Lose WeightTo determine your daily calorie needs to lose weight, the calculator decreases the number of calories you use each day by 25%, resulting in a new recommended daily calorie intake. Our Forbes Health Calorie Calculator panel of experts recommended this equation for safe, sustainable weight loss.

The calculator wont display fewer than 1,200 calories a day no matter your starting weight. If you go below that, its very difficult to get all the macronutrients and micronutrients you need for optimal health, says Melina Jampolis, M.D., a Forbes Health Advisory Board member.

The Forbes Health editorial team consulted 2021 Forbes Health Advisory Board members Melina Jampolis, M.D., Toby Amidor, R.D. and Sabrena Jo, M.S., the senior director of science and research at the American Council on Exercise (ACE), for this calculator. They reviewed the methods used by this tool to calculate daily calorie needs to maintain and lose weight.

Easy HGH Cycle for Beginners – Length, Dosages & Results – GoodHGH

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:07 am

Are you new to human growth hormones? So, in hgh cycle, it means the use of growth hormones, over a specific period, in given prescribed dosages.

There are many queries about hgh, on how to use, correct dosages, how long to take, reasons on cycles, and well look into these on this discussion.

Ive been using HGH dosages and cycles for some time now. I discovered that if you do it the right way, you can get the best results. But there can still be reaction as well and you should not dismissed that. The fact that its use is regulated says something about the risks involved.

In the event, you want the advantages given by hgh, but dont want to deal with the unwanted problems, the best way to use it is by the cycles and dosages Ill point out here.

This guide will show you hgh cycles, lengths and doses. Ill show you how to make it work, safely, and how to lessen the chance of probable body reactions.

An HGH cycle is actually your duration of use, with periods sustained between several weeks, generally according to your goals.

Take note that this cycle also depends on your experience and anabolic compounds used. My normal cycling pattern usually lasts for 4 to 8 months for human growth hormone. At times, I usually stacked with another supplement, but nonetheless you can just take hgh with the appropriate cycle, as given by your doctor.

Before you start to cycle Human growth hormone, it s crucial that you consider your ultimate target and when you would like to do it. Ive done this myself and observed that HGH can be a slow-acting hormonal agent. It does take some time to have any Human growth hormone cycle effects. If you want to build mass rapidly, or if you have to burn unwanted fat while maintaining your overall mass prior to a competition, then HGH might not be right for you.

Your HGH cycle dose can vary based on your objectives. The reason I said this is that you need to use human growth hormone along with the quantities based on your desired goals like anti-aging, body training, fat loss, general health, or medication. So, if youre about to start on a cycle, answer first whats your objective for using it.

Take for instance on cycling hgh for medication, the doses used as medical treatment would be substantial. You need to be tested by a medical professional, since doctors will prescribe the amount of HGH for specific cycles. If you still dont know hgh is used as a fast therapeutic treatment in people who have critical traumatic personal injuries like burns, wounds, or big cuts.

The dosage is an essential factor of human growth hormone use. It is essential to consult your doctor before you start Human growth hormone usage so that you can determine the ideal dose for yourself. Generally, the dosage is dependent upon your purpose of HGH use.

Though HGH provides the same outcomes in any medication dosage, their strength is highly dependent upon the amount of Human growth hormone you take.

2-3 IU every day is used for anti-aging reasons and enhancement of skin, hair, bones, and joints. You can inject it any moment of the day or possibly take orally on a full or empty tummy it does not matter. It will be the most beneficial to consider taking it each morning, or at least several hours before bedtime (before 6pm) for the reason that body actually lets out its own endogenous growth hormone if you go to sleep. Taking it minutes before bedtime may possibly reduce the bodys own hgh production robbing you of the beneficial dose.

4-8 IU each day is usually utilized by athletes for sports, fat loss, build lean muscle mass, and standard fitness. A lot of people take 6IU per day, nevertheless, the higher the amount though, the more the reaction can be. Carpal tunnel issue being the common effect which normally forces the athlete to reduce the dosage or pause the period for 2 3 days until the carpal disappears. It can be preferred to spread the daily amount into several shots during the day. For example 2 IU each day and 2 IU in late mid-day.

8 to 16 IU per day is commonly used to increase recovery right after severe burns up, injury, or accidents. This is a quite high amount and it ought not to be continued for over a few weeks. The carpal tunnel syndrome will most likely bother the person, but in the name of faster healing, some pain may be bearable. This high dosage is only prescribed by doctors, so take note of that.

First, you have to know that Human growth hormone is normally taken in milligrams or IUs. So, whats this ratio? 1 mg is about 3 IUs. Dont confuse the amount of milligram is the same asiu, and vice versa.

If youve just started, there wont be any unwanted reaction if you take about less than 3 IUs every day as it enhances the body functioning. Yes, you ll really feel energetic as well as other advantages like having lean muscles, good sleeping, fat loss but those results will gradually come, several weeks of regular use.

Try taking 4-6 IUs in a day, if you will be focusing on a muscle building dose, and this means that you will have to take more time in the gym to get the pounds or reduce it.

With a medication amount of 8-16 IUs, you might see some adverse reactions and medication quantity is much better for a small amount. The male growth hormone needs to be taken 750 mg (3 mL) per week.

A good check cycle should last 12 weeks. The recommendation is that you take a dose of three IUs in case you are a beginner, and you can go for 6 IUs only when you begin hitting the fitness center frequently. It can be best not to take the higher dose of HGH and Testosterone. When you start, use the smallest quantity as possible to obtain better results.

I take my doses any time of the day, either on a full or empty belly. Its your option, depending on how convenient would it be for you. You can have it yourself at any time but many users want to do it throughout the morning or some time before heading to bed during the night as these are the times when the body releases human hormones.

For those into fitness, workouts, sports, fat loss, you can start at 4 IU every day. Hardcore and advanced users can take higher dose up to 6 IU. If youre on your very first hgh cycle, the dose amounts I mentioned will work. If your in general good health, you can increase the amount depending on the condition.

If your objective is to faster healing after an accident, increase it around 8 to 16 IU every day. This really is a high dose and it is not suitable for anyone. When getting anything more than 4 IU, divide the dose each day rather than having it at a single take.

Given that you know the many positive aspects of HGH, it is time to think about an actual cycle. The following routine uses natural Human Growth Hormone.

Those getting it the very first time are advised to use 500 mg (mg) weekly, split into two weekly shots. If you do not, it can react to testosterone s reaction, so lower your medication quantity to 400mgs or much less.

You can use Human growth hormone every day with a moderate medication amount. But many endorse that you should have a couple times off each week. The reason becoming is that regular growth hormone will come in spikes, consequently, you should try to tightly mimic this with 4-5 weekly shots.

Here s a sample regular HGH dosage schedule:

Monday = Use HghTuesday = Use HghWednesday = Use HghThursday = OffFri = Use HghSaturday = OffSunday = Use Hgh

Also, keep in mind that the everyday HGH dose depends upon the standard of the product you are using. For 100 % pure HGH, it only requires 3 IUs each day for good results. However, the generic Human growth hormone requires 5-6 IUs for more comparable outcomes.

One more thing you will see together in the following period is that Human growth hormone works longer than testosterone. This is a milder compound that can take longer to provide results. Human growth hormone also has a less heavy reaction, which is the reason it can be used for so long.

The Human growth hormone cycleusually need to lasts for 50 days at first. This can be followed by a 20-40 day time gap, then, the 2nd period begins. A standard HGH pattern length could vary from 5-8 months, in line with the reason for its administration.

Experts say that the length of the HGH pattern is more crucial(yes, more important) than its dose. For that reason, a strategy of 5 IU/day for 6 months could be more effective than 10 IU/ day for 90 days.

Its recommended that hormone treatment should always begin with a very low dose pattern, gradually improving the amount right after your body undergoes adjustment. Thatsn how I used it

In line with adjustment, your human growth hormones objective often change as the time goes by. For example, you may intend to use hgh initially to slow aging by having optimum health, then start at two to three IU of Human growth hormone. Eventually, you look at the mirror and wanted to lessen superfluous fat, improve your body shape, augment lean body mass, then you increase dose around four to eight IU/day.

When I started, I observed that about 7 weeks of HGH treatment is adequate for that favorable outcome of treatment to become obvious. Heres how I did it.

2 iu first 4 weeks2.5 iu 5th week3 iu divided into two injections, 1.5 IU each inside the 6th full week3.5 iu divided into two injections, 1.75 IU each inside in the 7th week.

You can follow this, at least in first seven weeks.

On my human growth hormone studies and research, it says that the perfect hgh cycle span is three months.

I would say that 90 days is the minimum length. The 2-3.5 ius for 3 months is optimal for workout reasons in the beginning, though I adjust the doses 4-6 ius in the fourth to sixth months. Then I took a month off to give a rest to my pancreas. After a month break, Ill start another cycle at 4ius for 3 months, then 6ius for 3 months. Keep going until you reach 1-year cycle but no more. Heres your reference.

2iu to 3.5 iu first 3 months4iu to 6 iu 4th to 6 monthsTake a break one month4iu next 3 months6iu final 3 months

I feel the long-term benefits eventually took place, the doses was safer and I got better results. Thats just my experience though.

Youll realize that many men that use genuine GH will agree with this. Of course, not all are the same, but most manage to get this dosage cycle close in the numbers.

If its something new, I look at it or check with other users for a starting point. Eventually, Ill establish my own dosage cycle in the course of use. Ive been consuming GH for quite a while. I get checked out more than anybody mostly cuz Im evaluating products, so I try this myself to know if the dosage cycle work.

Thats just me, but your personal health is within your hands. So always consult a doctor before you use growth hormones.

Clinical studies reveal that remedy taken only for 4 weeks or short periods would not give apparent results. A minimum of 90 days and up to 9 months of treatment would show good effects. Obvious results were noticed in a few instances, when the Human growth hormone procedure was given for five months and results appear by 6-7 months, usually according to the objective.

The good thing about using HGH is basically that you dont need to bother about ancillaries and PCT just for this drug by yourself. Instead, you just need to take splits from using it after many months. Otherwise, you will become desensitized to the medication and get significantly less advantage from it.

The goal of ancillaries like testosterone is to minimize negative effects while you are on an anabolic steroid routine. Post-cycle treatments are used to retrieve your all-natural hormone levels, provided that both estrogen and androgenic hormone or testosterone are affected in a cycle. In spite of this, let s include what you need to do both whiles in and right after using Human growth hormone and male growth hormone

The one thing that you need to do, however, consume more water and reduce your sodium absorption. This helps you minimize water retention by using an HGH cycle.

Based on my experience, you can get quick results by stacking stack Human Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and Testosterone.

Studies state that testosterone help HGH release by stacking it together as an enhancement. It has raises its effectiveness after I stack, which allowed me to workout better. The Testosterone and HGH cycle lasts for a while depending on the amount that you take it. For me, the HGH and testosterone period lasts for about 3 months.

What happens to your body when you stack these two supplements. Heres a background on how body process the interactions. You have different hormones and they are naturally sourced from your body, and they are very important to your body. As you age, the interaction HGH and Testosterone with each other, decreases. That is why most athletes and bodybuilders begin to stack HGH and Testosterone in a cycle.

Ive tried this myself, since I wanted to boost my muscle mass, but it is extremely challenging, since it requires regularly adjusting the doses. I experienced a lot of pain and struggle for the first several weeks, since side effects happen at the onset, before positive results happen. Take note, Ive worked my butts off and lifted weights till my wrists and arms sore. In addition, I incorporated a protein-rich diet to get the results that I wanted to enhance lean muscles mass.

Yes, you must do it for the following some factors. Splitting the shots give you an easy level of GH and IGF-1, so fat reducing and muscles growth are more powerful.

Sometimes liver organ cant take the big volume of HGH to stimulate IGF-1 quickly. Our system is tweaked to 5-7 HGH peaks of release during the daytime, not to 1 big maximum release. Liver might not convert all growth hormone to somatomedins as well as the rest will likely be destroyed, thus your just wasting away as its flushed out of the body.

Also, if you split doses, unwanted effects, in this case, are milder.

It all depends. How much you take is really an individual issue. Also, there is absolutely no real formulation for you to decide if xxx amount is useful for you.

I experience great results on 3ius every day. For general health, like anti-aging, I started in a low dose like 2ius. After some time of use, I wanted to improve my workout stamina and energy, I used 3ius. When I switched to intense muscle building so I can change my body significantly, where Ill lose fat and gain a lot lean muscle, I increase it to 5ius dose. Take note, that I always started in a low dose, then I adjust in small increments.

The right Human growth hormone dosage vary and depends upon why you would like to use it. These variables can vary from user experience, current physique, state of health, other drugs you might take, body shape, percent of fat, duration, protocol of using, budget, other health purposes like recovery and faster healing.

Years ago, the most frequent belief was that one was supposed to take HGH before going to bed. As time went by people have found that was not always the case.

The body releases GH at night if you sleep. Consuming synthetic GH prior to bedtime will only restrain your all-natural output.

The perfect time to take it is actually upon waking up in the morning. That way you take advantage of your natural GH output after which have one more surge, first thing you wake up in the morning.

As you can see the duration of HGH dosage cycles and the approach is tremendously dependent on goals involved, as well as on how many other compounds, if any, are stacked and used with Human Growth Hormone.

In summary, as I previously stated and reiterated, even what doctors told me, start with the lowest doses and then make adjustments as period goes by. Never ever go over the given doses just because you feel impatient of the results and wanted to see quick benefits.

7 Tips for Safely Introducing Your Baby to Allergens, According to Experts Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:06 am

When it comes to food allergies, anyone can have them and they're not dependent on family history. In addition, only about 2-3% of children under three years of age are found to have peanut, egg, and milk allergies, according to the Prevent Allergies Organization.

For first-time parents, or even parents who have been around the block a few times, introducing your baby to foods associated with allergens is a scary and overwhelming process. However, introducing these foods early on in life can significantly reduce the risk of developing certain food allergies by up to 80% in infants.

"Babies should be introduced to foods classically thought of as allergens around six months of age, [but] not before four months of age," says Dr. Scott H. Sicherer, M.D., professor of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, and the author of The Complete Guide to Food Allergies in Adults and Children "But over the last several years, the recommendations have been quite the opposite," he explains.

It's best for allergens to be introduced early on in a child's lifeamong the normal foods typically fed to infantsas in some cases, it may even help prevent allergies in the future and/or reveal any severe reactions that are good to catch early on. Dr. Sicherer recommends parents stop, "treating foods possibly thought of as allergens differently than any other food."

With all of this in mind, we asked the experts how to best help you understand and prepare for the day you start giving your baby foods that could contain allergens. These are the seven tips and tricks to properly, safely, and effectively introduce kids to allergens.

Step one, as we've discussed above, is to bring allergen foods into the equation as early as possible. After babies reach the four- to six-month range, you'll be able to appropriately examine their reactions to food outside of breastfeeding and/or formula. But what foods does this include exactly?

Foods that may cause an allergic reaction or intolerance are those that are or contain milk, egg, wheat, soy/soybeans, peanut, tree nuts, fish (mainly shellfish), and sometimes even sesame seeds. "It's OK for babies to be introduced to these things that are sort of allergens. And it might be even better to have it among the earlier foods they're introduced to," Dr. Sicherer says.

Multiple studies and reviews have found that introducing allergens to infants within the beginning of their first year (4-6 months) combats the development of allergies to food as the child grows up. It's also possible that if the process is delayed for too long, then there's a greater chance that a child can become allergic or more sensitive to common allergy-related foods.

"The introduction of peanut, for example, is generally recommended around six months of age, [and] not before four months," Dr. Sicherer explains. But, he says, "for babies showing signs of allergy, it might actually be given earlier in that four to six months window of time." Early attempts can allow parents to see any physical discomfort, and allergies can be spotted and then dealt with quickly (and possibly even before they reach a severe level).

Sign up for our newsletter!

This is one of the easiest tips to stick to. Don't start giving your child any foods they're not ready to consume yet. While you may be concerned about how your child will react to certain foods, "we have to take into consideration the baby's ability to eat solids," Dr. Sicherer explains.

"Some babies are ready for solids and they're able to take those pureed foods and keep it fine," he says, "others might dribble it out and not be ready yet." Once infants begin to wean off of liquids as their only forms of nourishmentwhich can be past the six-month period in some casesthen it's officially time to start introducing allergen foods.

Although, there are right ways and wrong ways to go about this first-time experience. You're definitely not going to want to try giving a baby whole peanuts as their first go-around, because they can and will choke, Dr. Sicherer explains. Along with pieces of nuts, "peanut butter is a choking hazard for babies" he says.

As you feel out when your child becomes ready to take on solid foods, they should be presented in a safe matter. This is going to be foods that are in the form of purees, pastes, sauces, and (for some of the fast learners) tiny pieces that don't require chewing.

While you're starting to bring the long list of allergens into your child's diet, you should be aware of what it looks like when they're having an allergic reaction to a new food. This is especially crucial since there are both mild and severe reactions when it comes to food allergies.

"The biggest thing that a baby could have that would make you think they might have allergies is if they have skin rashes called eczema or atopic dermatitis," Dr. Sicherer says. These rashes are itchy and might occur on a baby's face, arms, legs, chest, and/or back.

While it's believed that babies who experience eczema in their first few months of life may be more prone to allergy, Dr. Sicherer explains, "it doesn't mean they are experiencing a food allergy, it just means that they're someone that might go on to have a food allergy."

Other common and more subtle allergy symptoms, according to Dr. Sicherer, are often going to be gut-related or visually obvious within a short time period after the baby eats these new foods. These can be anything from having diarrhea or blood in the stool, vomiting, hives, swelling, rashes, or even signs the baby isn't growing enough.

On the more severe side, you're going to see an extreme case of eczema or atopic dermatitis, or the child may have trouble breathing, cough or wheeze, or turn pale or blue in the face. However, this is not to sound the alarms! "Those are not going to be common for babies being introduced to these foods first off," Dr. Sicherer says.

"If the baby doesn't really show any signs of allergyno eczema or anything elsethere's no strong reason to expect there's going to be a problem," he explains.

According to Main Street Pediatrics, many severe reactions will typically happen about 10-15 minutes after eating the food, but some mild reactions could take a few hours to begin to show up.

Now, if your infant is trying allergen foods for the first time and you are seeing any of these signs (mild or severe), immediately stop! Take a deep breath and treat these reactions or symptoms like you would any other conditiongive your child (allergy) medication following the advice of your doctor and visit your doctor for assistance and an evaluation if needed.

When getting ready to share these new foods with your baby, it's best to keep in mind that, "allergens are essentially the same as any other food, [and] they still have to be given in a way that a baby isn't going to choke on it," says Dr. Sicherer.

On average, the first foods fed to babies in America are normally ones like grains or oats (mashed up without any chunks) and pureed food in jars. These are almost always single-ingredient foods or vegetablessuch as oatmeal, squash, peas, or applesauceand can remain the initial solids you decide to give your infant, before stepping into the realm of allergens.

When allergy-related foods come into the picture (and with any other new food), Dr. Sicherer recommends smoothing out choking hazardous components into warm water to make a sauce or liquidy paste (apple sauce is a great example of this!).

"Tree nuts are real hard," he explains. But if you're really adamant about adding them to your infants' diet as soon as they're ready, then it's best to "have it in forms that are going to be baby-safe. That would be made into butters that can be smoothed out, for example, or flours."

If you're looking for something simple to start within the allergens family, try some soft cheeses, yogurt, or eggs. "Eggs could be pretty easy," Dr. Sicherer claims, while "babies should not eat raw egg, you certainly could make scrambled egg and mash it up into small bits."

Another great trick is mixing an allergen food into baked goods, specifically for introducing wheat, milk, or soy. Even the slightest bit can go a long way, as an infant only needs to consume a small amount of an allergen food to be considered as exposure.

Even though it's frightening not to know the outcome, it's still not a great idea to postpone the introduction of allergens to babies. One way to create this safe pattern where the immune system is more accepting of foods, is for your child to "have a diverse diet," Dr. Sicherer explains, and it's "been seen to help prevent food allergies."

"The more things the baby can eat, the merrier," he says. Doctors and researchers are more confident than ever that early exposure to allergens, as well as all foods in general, is even better for the child's gut and immune system because they'll learn to digest more (including "worry foods") in a normal and healthy manner.

As you start your search for pureed foods and other solids for your child to try to diversify their diet, there's a new product on the market that might be of interest to you. Baby food companies are coming out with products made specifically with the intention of serving allergens into an infant's diet as early as possible, as well as keeping them a part of their everyday foods going forward.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

They're all "baby-safe, pre-made, measured products," Dr. Sicherer says. Certain baby food companies claim that they are good "specifically for prevention of allergy types," he explains, but they're not FDA approved to do so. Spoonful ONE, an example of this baby food manufacturer, sells powdered mix-in options and dissolvable puff snacks that are meant to introduce 16 different allergen foods.

These introductory products that outwardly claim to be allergy preventative are more expensive than other baby foods, but "there's a choice in this situation between the convenience versus the cost," Dr. Sicherer explains. If you use most all other baby food company products, you'll have to use your own blending method, measure a good quantity, and then it will be ready to serve.

In the very beginning, infants need to be consuming either breastmilk or formula as their main source of food and nutrients. "Cow's milk is not appropriate for an infant," says Dr. Sicherer, "but if the baby's going to have formula that's made out of cow's milk, that's okay, because it's made for babies"

Then, once your child hits the six-month milestone (or older) and has moved on to more solid foods, you might want to know other ways allergens can make it onto your little one's plate. Now, to be clear, there's no need to worry about these foods if you're baby hasn't shown signs of allergy quite yet, but they're good to keep in mind if you begin seeing allergy signs (discussed above) come up shortly after consumption.

Normally, there's a pretty solid understanding that milk, cheese, fish, and nut-butters in their standard form are all allergen foods. On the contrary, there may be some other foods that are not as commonly known to have an allergen-related ingredient. Groceries such as pasta, (which is made out of wheat), breaded chicken (which usually has some sort of egg in the breading), certain breads (which may have a milk component), and some thick sauces (inexplicitly could have peanuts).

You should also stay aware of any type of cross-contamination situations that could arise. Dr. Sicherer, explains, "You're making a chicken broth, but you're also making a cream soup next to that, and you put the spoon from the cream soup into the non-milk soup, then you would have cross contacted the soup that wasn't supposed to have milk in it."

Mind the Gap: How Culture-Specific Messaging Can Lead to Better Nutrition – Tufts Now

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:06 am

Ana Maafs-Rodrguez recalls the first time she recognized what she has come to think of as the gap.

She was working as a nutritionist in her hometown, Mexico City, and she met with a young woman who suffered from diabetes and renal failure. Recent research that Maafs-Rodrguez had helped to conduct had shown her what type of fish could be safely eaten by patients with those illnesses. She counseled the patient accordingly, and all seemed well.

However, during the patients subsequent visits, Maafs-Rodrguez learned that the woman was having trouble following the advice. The patient shared that numerous factorsprice, availability of the recommended fish types, limited cooking experience (and time to cook), and incompatibility with the diets of friends and familywere leading her to disregard the advice.

Thats when I realized that I was failing to effectively guide people in their food choices, Maafs-Rodrguez said. Iand theyknew what they needed to eat, but that knowledge was not translating into long-term behavior.

That was the gap Maafs-Rodrguez discovered: the space between providing information about healthy eating choices and seeing individuals change their behavior based on that information. That discovery inspired Maafs-Rodrguez to want to understand how to better communicate research-based nutrition information, in ways that would positively affect individuals behaviorand, in particular, the behavior of Latinos.

She enrolled as a masters student in the Nutrition Interventions, Communication, and Behavior Change program at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. She earned that degree in 2020 and is now on track to complete her doctorate within the next 18 months.

For her doctorate under advisor and Friedman School associate professor Sara Folta, Maafs-Rodrguez is working on three distinct assessments as to why some messages about healthy eating fail, especially among Latino populations, and how communication strategies can be improved to help guide people to better nutrition choices.

One of the projects, the Youre the Mom campaign, a part of Tufts ChildObesity180 initiative, aims to pinpoint which messages shared via social media are most effective with mothers in supporting their childrens healthy eating habits. Before any social media content was developed or posted, an early phase of the campaign involved soliciting from Black and Latina mothers information about their needs as parents, what messages they would hope to see in a campaign about healthy eating, how they usually access social media, and what type of content catches their attention.

Working with Friedman School Dean ad interim Christina Economos, Maafs-Rodrguez is focusing on that early phase of the campaign, studying the ways in which mothers social media use and expectations ultimately influenced the campaigns strategy. We believe using the mothers own voices to inform the campaign ultimately will increase the likelihood that our content resonates with the audience, said Maafs-Rodrguez.

For a second project, an ethnically tailored dietary intervention, Maafs-Rodrguezs goal is to better understand how culturally adapted messaging might influence quality of diet. In the study, researchers divided participants into two groups, according to their Caribbean or non-Caribbean Latino heritage. They determined key differences between the groups. Among their findings: while both groups tend to eat unhealthy food choices, Caribbean participants were more likely to choose these in response to cravings while non-Caribbeans did so during special social occasions. Researchers then crafted specific text messages that promoted healthy eating during each situation for the respective heritage group.

When there's a lack of cultural adaptation in the messaging, some messages may fail to resonate with all populations equally well, Maafs-Rodrguez said. Our aim was to provide tips that are related to healthy eating, while tailoring the tactics to the beliefs and attitudes that are relevant to each group. This work is being done in conjunction with researchers at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, led by Dr. Josiemer Mattei.

In addition, with support from Folta, Economos, and Mattei, Maafs-Rodrguez has devised her own study in which she will analyze Internet videos that feature advice about healthy eating aimed at older Latino adults and assess the videos messages based on their cultural relevance, their consistency with U.S. dietary guidelines, and their persuasive power for older Latinos in the U.S.

When she finishes her current projects and her dissertation, Maafs-Rodrguez hopes to secure a postdoctoral position to continue her explorations of how to make messaging around healthy eating as effective as possible for specific audiences.

The pandemic made clear the importance of effective communication about health issuesand its power to drive opinions and behavior, she said. Now our focus can be on improving and customizing what we communicate.

Whale strandings: what happens after they die and how do authorities safely dispose of them? – The Guardian

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:06 am

Two mass strandings in Tasmanian waters in a week has left about 200 pilot whales and 14 sperm whales dead.

On Monday, 14 juvenile sperm whales died and washed ashore at King Island, in Bass Strait. Approximately 230 pilot whales became stranded on Ocean Beach, west of the Tasmanian town of Strahan on Wednesday.

Tasmanian authorities said on Thursday that they would be transitioning to carcass recovery and disposal operations in the coming days. But how do you safely dispose of the massive beasts?

If cetaceans are left onshore where they have stranded and died, their decomposition can pose a biohazard risk, said Dr Olaf Meynecke, of Griffith Universitys coastal and marine research centre. The removal of the animals is a major issue and something that we kind of forget once a rescue mission is over.

In warmer climates, the internal decomposition of dead whales can result in spontaneous explosions. Gut bacteria in the whales can multiply quickly, producing large quantities of methane gas. If the rest of the body is still intact if the outer layer, the blubber, is still intact and not broken up then it can lead to an explosion, Meynecke said.

In 2004, the decomposing carcass of a 60-tonne, 17-metre sperm whale exploded on a busy street in the Taiwanese city of Tainan, showering cars and shops with blood and organs and stopping traffic for hours.

Researchers would probably carry out checks on the recently stranded animals, including necropsies to look at gut content, and assessing overall health indicators such as the thickness of their blubber layer, Meynecke said.

Usually necropsies cannot be conducted more than after a few days after a whale dies, due to the risk of explosion, he says. Its actually part of the risk assessment the animal has to be assessed beforehand and if there are signs of swelling in the gut area, the pressure needs to be released ahead [of the necropsy].

If theres anything of benefit, its that the dead individuals will be an opportunity to contribute to science, said Dr Vanessa Pirotta, a wildlife scientist affiliated with Macquarie University, who described it as the silver lining of a sad situation.

We can learn more about their diet, their genetics, how similar these individuals were to the population that stranded before, she says, referring to a 2020 mass stranding event at the same location, in which 350 pilot whales died.

Cetaceans that die onshore after stranding should be towed out to the ocean, Meynecke said. They should be returned to sea thats where they belong.

Sam Gerrity, of Southwest Expeditions, has been involved in the logistical effort after both the most recent and 2020 mass strandings near Strahan. He said the disposal involved a pretty confronting process of towing dozens of carcasses out to sea.

Open decomposition and burial were both trialled after the 2020 pilot whale stranding, but authorities have said they are not the preferred methods for the most recent stranding. Our first option will be long-lining the carcasses out to deep ocean, the incident controller Brendon Clark, said at a press conference on Thursday.

But the logistics for larger whale species are far trickier than pilot whales, which weigh up to three tonnes. [For a sperm whale] were looking at probably over 15 tonnes or more. Once theyre not in water any more, they become too heavy to drag with normal equipment, Meynecke said.

Burying whales should be avoided, he said. Disposing of a sea animal on land is generally not a good idea. The animals will decompose a lot slower once theyre buried it will take months and its a very slow process.

In 2017, a New South Wales council buried an 18-tonne humpback whale at Port Macquaries Nobbys beach and then excavated it a week later, due to community concerns about heightened shark activity.

If youve got a connection to the water table theres a chance that it does leak out into the ocean it could potentially attract predators but thats not fully proven, Meynecke said.

An infamous whale disposal case occurred in the US in 1970, when the Oregon Highway Division tried to get rid of a decaying sperm whale by blowing it up with dynamite.

The humour of the entire situation suddenly gave way to a run for survival as huge chunks of whale blubber fell everywhere, said a reporter in a now-viral TV story.

Meynecke called the incident proof of human stupidity. We laugh about it, but its the same thing as burying something only because we cant see it, it doesnt mean its gone, and only because we blow it up it doesnt mean its gone its just distributed in smaller pieces and it creates more problems.

Why mass whale strandings occur is still not entirely clear. Pilot whales misnamed as they are actually a large oceanic dolphin are known as the most susceptible species to mass strandings, because they are highly social and form pods of several hundred.

They end up in these big groups, but they dont know each other very well, Meynecke said. If one of them starts to panic there is a lot of miscommunication, because they dont actually know each other and the calls dont make sense to them. He likened it to panic among humans at a concert or other crowd. There is that emotional stress that actually drives them to continuously restrand as well.

Sperm whales, however, do not usually mass strand, and the deaths of more than a dozen at King Island was concerning, Meynecke said.

It probably isnt a coincidence that these two species stranded at similar times, because they might have been looking for prey closer to the islands, he said. We do have drastic changes in the marine environment related to climate change. Thats also what was related to the stranding of sperm whales in Europe in 2016.

That incident was linked to changes in water temperatures and the movement of food sources into shallower waters in the North Sea. We might see more of these strandings in future, Meynecke said.

The FDA investigated the ongoing baby formula shortage. Heres what it found. – Popular Science

Posted: September 26, 2022 at 2:06 am

The baby formula shortage is far from over, but to prevent future scarcity, the United States is taking a critical look at what went wrong earlier this year. On September 20, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released an internal report on the fumbles and mishaps that led to a delay in response to the formula crisis. A number of reasons were listed, including outdated data systems, insufficient emergency response systems capable of managing multiple public health emergencies, and lack of consumer education on how to handle and prepare infant formula. The agency also acknowledged that there are many unknowns about the bacterial contaminant Cronobacter, which was reportedly found in baby formula products from Abbott Nutrition.

The baby formula shortage was a perfect storm, explains Jenelle Ferry, neonatologist and director of feeding, nutrition, and infant development at Pediatrix Neonatology of Florida. You had a combination of COVID pandemic restrictions, supply chain issues, and now youre involving a situation with a company [Abbott Nutrition] that is a major manufacturer of formula products.

On February 17, 2022, the FDA sent out a warning to consumers to stop using powdered infant formula from Abbott Nutrition after concerns of bacterial contamination in its products. Shortly after, Abbott voluntarily recalled infant formula products and shut down the facility during the ongoing FDA investigation. Before the recall, the company was responsible for 40 percent of infant formula production. The uncertainty of when products would be back on shelves led to panic buying, making them hard to find. The situation created unrest and distrust of the whole process, and I think families did not know what to believe or what was safe for their babies, says Ferry.

[Related: What the FDA is doing about the US baby formula shortage]

Ferry explains part of the reason for the mistrust is the lack of understanding behind what actually happened to the babies who allegedly drank formula contaminated with Cronobacter. An initial report indicated that babies got sick with Cronobacter after drinking similarbut not the sameformula from Abbott, she says. Its very misleading to say the formulas was contaminated because its not clear [if] the two infants that died did because of Cronobacter. Testing later revealed that Cronobacter was on some surfaces of the manufacturing plant, but tests to identify the bacterial strains in the infants found they did not match those found in the factory. Ferry says the results get muddier because the strains found in the baby formulas were different from each other, which suggests that its unclear where the bacteria originally came from.

This isnt the first time Cronobacter has been a problem in such productsthe bacteria is a known contaminant of infant formula. Richard Martinello, an infectious disease expert at Yale School of Medicine, says that the bacteria is naturally present in the environment and has a preference for very dry environments, such as dry powdered baby formula. It is an opportunistic bacteria that causes severe infections in vulnerable populations such as infants with less developed immune systems. While Cronobacter infections rarely happentwo to four cases are reported each year in the USan infected infant (less than one year old) may experience symptoms ranging from fever, seizures, to meningitis. If untreated, there is a high chance of death or for the meningitis to lead to long-term neurological issues.

Ferry stresses that when you look at the contamination, you have to ask what was first exposed and where. She says the Cronobacter was not directly found in any of the recalled itemsmaking it possible that the product was exposed to bacteria from other environmental conditions or handling rather than a contaminated ingredient. There are also a lot more opportunities for the formula to have picked up the bacteria, such as on countertops, storage, and even at home when the infant formula is not safely handled or prepared.

Among the FDAs suggested areas of improvement, Martinello says it is important to create a system to make Cronobacter cases a reportable disease where states can identify infections. Doing so will help better understand the frequency of cases and allow more opportunities for scientists to study the bacteria.

Infant formula is regulated as a food product, but experts agree its a life-saving item for babies under six months, when milk is the primary source of nutrition. Arik Alper, a pediatric gastroenterologist and assistant professor of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine, explains that infants and toddlers with special needs were hit hardest by the low stock of infant formulas. Abbott is a major producer of special formulas for babies that have food allergies, an inability to digest certain proteins in the diet, or have a disease where they need non-dairy formulas, says Alper. If you need a standard formula there are other options, but we have a problem when special formulas are not available, he says. Its not easy [for babies] to adjust to a new formula and the transition may be associated with gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting or irregular bowel movement.

Ferry says the only alternative to safely and adequately feed a baby under six months when infant formulas arent available is breast milk. However, she points out that often people choose infant formula because breastfeeding is not an option for all caregivers. Another possibility is to find other brands of infant formulas, although that is less of an option for infants with special needs. Though he does not recommend it, Alper has seen some parents create their own formula recipes in a blender at home. He says this would be better suited for older children and if a parent insisted on making their own stock, the process should be supervised by a nutritionist to ensure a nutritious and balanced diet. One thing he advises against is parents diluting their existing stock of formula to make it last. To provide a growing child 100 percent nutrition, you need to make sure they get enough caloriesthey need enough nutrients, vitamins, and fiber, Alper says.

Production at Abbotts Michigan plant resumed in early July. Currently, the FDA is forming groups that will work on improving the gaps uncovered in the baby shortage investigation and will reevaluate their progress in a year.
