Indian IT unlikely to fall as much as US tech stocks: Harsha Upadhyaya – Economic Times

Posted: September 9, 2020 at 5:55 am

There is no point in just betting on valuations and expecting those stocks to revive, says the CIO Equity, Kotak AMC.

Would you call the market sell-off ordinary or this is a sign of more pain to come?Over the last three to four months, we had seen synchronous one-way moves across global equities and India was also caught up in it. At the current valuations, with recovery in the economy, we see a couple of factors. One, globally we have seen a bit of volatility on the downside in the last couple of trading sessions. Some profit booking could be happening and liquidity looks a little jittery at this point of time.

The same could happen in India given high valuations and Street expectations on the recovery of the economy. Those are receding day by day and given all this, there is not much room for the markets to go up from these levels. Either it will be a consolidation at around current levels or in the worst case, there could be some correction.

Can I safely assume that what is happening in Nasdaq will have a rub off effect but not the ripple effect on India? Should Indian investors pay attention to the sell-off in US tech stocks or can we say that we are different because we do not have those same nature of stocks? We should pay attention because if market leaders are taking a knock, then that also shows some signs of reversal. I do not think that there is a one to one correlation between what is happening in Nasdaq and our own stock performances in the IT sector. The businesses are very different, the valuations are very different and given the fact that our economy is still reeling under Covid pressure, there are many other sectors which have not come back to normalcy at least in the case of the IT sector. In the overall context of Indian listed space, there is a lot more resilience.

There is a lot more focus on cash flows and they have got huge cost levels. For example, the travel costs have almost come down to zero and those are the levers that will play up during the next few quarters while the revenue side may be still be muted but the velocity of deals are really improving, not so much on the transformation deals but really on the cost breakout engagements with IT users, there is a good amount of velocity. Overall our IT may not fall as much as US technology stocks.

What are the pockets of interest right now from a two-three-year perspective? We are not really taking sectoral calls at this point of time because even within a single sector, the balance sheet strength and the ability to survive this disruption may not be similar. So, we are going more bottom up in our approach but if you were to look at the overall market, there are sectors which have shown more resilience and some sectors which have recovered quite meaningfully from the lows.

Then there is a third bucket which is mostly beaten down stocks and for lack of any other definition, people call it value but those stocks are down in terms of valuations because of a reason. There is no point on just betting on valuations and expecting those stocks to revive but if you see any change in management approach in some of those stocks or if there is any move to monetise some of the non-core assets, then there will be triggers for value unlocking and then we will look at those calls so broadly this is what we are looking at market fully.

Given the strategy that you are approaching markets with currently and the areas of growth, what is the kind of timeline you are giving for things to get back on track?Looking at quarterly results, it does not give any confidence even if you were to look at the possible numbers that would come for the September quarter, it is unlikely that we will have a very different take on the markets or on the stocks.

Overall, FY21 is going to be a washout year in terms of earnings. Currently, the expectations are that FY22 onwards there will be a good recovery in our economy and also corporate profitability. If that were to come through, then there is some money to be made on FY22 basis. But otherwise, markets are fully priced in at this point in time.

Within some of the cyclicals and industrials, there has been a revival story. Where do you think there is opportunity assuming that these are quality stocks with better balance sheets? We do have exposure to many sub-segments of engineering and capital goods. The idea being before Covid, this was one of the sectors which was really attractive in terms of valuations. They were quoting at a market capitalisation of a proportion which was similar to the 2003-2004 period, which was the beginning of the investment cycle. I am talking about the market cap as a proportion to the total market cap.

Now with disruption due to Covid, there has been a significant deferment in most of the projects that these companies undertake. Fortunately for us, most of our portfolio companies do not have much hit on their books and also well run, have good management bandwidth and already we are seeing some gradual restarting of projects and as the execution pace picks up these companies will come back. But whatever has been lost in the last three-four months is a loss but it is going to come over a period of time since projects are restarting now.

The more important point is these will be the set of companies which will be able to really bid for new projects whenever the investment cycle takes off. There is some time before that happens but whenever it happens because of their balance sheet strength and how they have managed this crisis, they will be the ones who will bid aggressively for those projects and also be able to execute them. Overall, in terms of consolidation within the engineering and the capital goods space I, companies that have significant strength on the balance sheets and which have not taken a big hit during the Covid phase, will be the ones to watch out for.

After reducing debt in Reliance Jio, the companys focus is on Reliance Retail which perhaps is going to be the first group entity to be listed separately? There is a lot of focus on deleveraging and on monetisation of all of the businesses which are currently unlisted. So to that extent, there is more to come and we do have a large exposure to the company but obviously we are limited by the Sebi guidelines allowing 10% of the portfolio to be invested in a single stock. That obviously is a challenge because in a market which has been so polarised, if you cannot really take an equal weight or an overweight on a stock which you believe is going to outperform then obviously you have to make that up with some other stocks in some other sectors.

For an institutional investor which has compulsions of a minimum investment, how can you play in the tech space because the only tech idea which comes to everyones mind is Reliance? You may not have direct plays where the technology innovations are taking place in the Indian listed space but definitely you could look at the enablers for that transition. Some of these IT services companies are providing that transition. There could also be business models which are evolving and which are moving more towards the digital side.

If the market is also moving in that direction, then obviously there is significant room ahead. For example, credit card business is something that we really like. Due to the Covid scare, people are using lesser currency notes and spending more through digital payments. Credit cards are definitely one of those businesses which has a very low penetration and that means there is a long runway for growth. Also, if the entire portfolio is managed well, it can really have a very good impact in the business. I think well-run credit card businesses will definitely be one of the areas that we will be keen to invest into.

One idea in the market is that one should stick to leaders whether it is pharma, tech or new age businesses. The second thought is that go on the other end, that is buy beaten down, cheap, high dividend yield stock or a business which is trading below intrinsic value. Would you be tempted to keep a balance or avoid one?You have seen us managing money over the years and our philosophy is pretty clear. We do not like to take extreme positions whether in terms of diversification or in terms of concentration or in terms of some of the sectoral views. So to that extent, at this point of time, while we do have some of the defensive or resilient sectors like IT and pharma, we also have exposure to some of the sectors where normalcy hasnt returned yet. For example, financials and industrials are the areas where we have really not seen a complete normalisation but we do believe that there is going to be normalisation at some point of time. The valuations of the companies we are holding are really reflecting that and hence we would like to remain within that basket. So clearly, it is a balance between some of the resilient names and some of the names where there can be an upside because today things are still uncertain and you really do not know which way the market is going to tilt.

In case the recovery is going to be delayed, then you have to have the stability in the portfolio with resilient sectors in place. At the same time, if the recovery starts to gather momentum, then you need to have something in that bucket as well. We have always been approaching investments from a slightly conservative or middle of the road kind of an view and that is what we are doing in these uncertain times.

Weight Loss Tips: Kareena’s Nutritionist Says It Is Important To Look Beyond The Weighing Scale- Know Why – NDTV

Posted: September 9, 2020 at 5:54 am

Weight loss: Instead of shedding kilos, your goal should be to get fitter and stronger

To focus on weight loss is much different than the focus on getting fitter and healthier. Kareena Kapoor Khan's nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, in one of her recent posts on Instagram, talks about how the focus on weight loss or the lack of it can mask many of the physiological benefits that exercise and eating right bestows. When a person begins exercising regularly and eating right, it not just helps with weight loss, but also helps in improving insulin sensitivity, endurance, overall body strength and stamina.

Getting fitter and healthier is when you get more aware of hunger cues, satiety signals, breathing rate, resting heart rate and better functioning of kidneys and liver amongst others.

Also read:Weight Loss: Do's And Don'ts Of Breakfast You Must Follow

Diwekar says that the people who don't lose weight on the scale but are otherwise living a healthy and disciplined life can be called "metabolically fit". Their lifestyle ensures that they are not at risk of cardiac or blood sugar or hormone-related diseases, and have a strong immunity.

Another thing to note is that weight loss doesn't automatically reduce risk of heart diseases, obesity, diabetes, etc. You may be losing weight because of falling sick, an underlying health condition or because of following a fad diet (which may be causing nutritional deficiency). Methods like starvation, over-exercise, surgeries or pills can help you lose weight but may do more harm than good.

FOTI/ TOFI and why you must look beyond weight loss- Focus on weight loss (or the lack of it) masks many, if not all, of the physiological (not to mention psychological) benefits that exercise and eating right bestows. The improved insulin sensitivity, endurance, strength, stamina, hunger cues, satiety signals, VO2 max, breathing rate, resting heart rate, better kidney and liver functioning to just name a few. The term for people who don't lose weight on scale but are otherwise leading a healthy, disciplined life is metabolically fit'. Their lifestyle ensures that they are not at a risk of cardiac or blood sugar or hormone related disease (and have better immunity). One funky term for the metabolically fit is (I love this one) FOTI: Fat Outside, Thin Inside. And the term I love even more is TOFI: Thin Outside, Fat Inside, which acknowledges the fact that losing weight on the scale doesn't automatically reduce risk of heart diseases, obesity, diabetes, etc., in fact it can put you at a higher risk if the methods that led to the reduction were fundamentally incorrectlike starvation, over-exercise, surgeries or pills. #beyondweightloss #healthbasics #fitnotthin

Weight Loss: 8 Healthy habits every weight watcher should have – PINKVILLA

Posted: September 9, 2020 at 5:54 am

Even after doing intense workout and strict diet control, we often tend to gain more weight. This happens generally due to bad lifestyle habits. So, stop them and instead adopt the new and healthy ones.

Weight loss is not only possible with diet control and intense workout but we also need to change our entire lifestyle and include healthy habits in our daily life to lose and manage weight. Often it has been seen that people after doing diet control and workout, tend to gain weight.

It happens because certain bad habits contribute to weight gain. As a result, no matter how much we reduce our calorie intake, we tend to put on weight. Hence, we need to eliminate those bad habits and practise new ones to stay healthy.

Daily habits to practise for weight loss:

1.Stop having diet sodas. They are packed with artificial sweeteners that affect metabolism, spike insulin levels and prevent the fat-burning process. Research has also seen that people who drink two to three diet sodas in a day tend to increase weight.

2.Snacking between meals is another bad habit that needs to be stopped. Three balanced meals are the best way to control your weight.

3.Include walnuts in your diet plan. Its polyunsaturated fat reduces fat storage and improves insulin metabolism.

4.Instead of doing high-intensity interval training three days a week, do traditional aerobic exercises for 45 minutes three days a week. It is more effective for losing abdominal fat.

5.Include whole grains in your diet like wheat, quinoa, oats, brown rice, etc. and eliminate refined carbs like bread, rice pasta to reduce more weight.

6.Have black pepper in your meals. Piperine, found in black pepper, helps to ease inflammation and tummy troubles.

7.Coconut oil is a great option to opt for weight loss. So, replace your cooking oils with this to lead a healthy lifestyle. It regulates your cholesterol levels.

8.Instead of having normal chocolates, have dark chocolates as they have flavonoids which have important antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

Tim Tebow Started the Keto Diet After Seeing His NFL Teammates Become Freaks of Nature – Sportscasting

Posted: September 9, 2020 at 5:52 am

Fans must wonder if there is anything Tim Tebow cant do? Hes played in both the NFL and MLB. Somehow, hes managed to find the time to write a few NYT bestselling books, run his nonprofit, and get married. Tebow is also a fitness celebrity and a strong advocate of the keto diet, with his hashtag #GoKetoWithTebow.

RELATED: Peyton Manning Kept Tim Tebow From Being a Successful NFL QB

In an interview with WebMDs Coronavirus in Context series, Tebow shared that hes been living the keto lifestyle since late 2011. He was first introduced to the strict diet by his fellow NFL players. He saw what it did for them, calling these guys freaks in a good way and noting their lifting, and running, and strength. Tebow started following the now-popular high-fat, low-carb diet and hasnt looked back.

While Tebow may have started keto for athletic reasons, hes stayed on it because of personal ones his family. In the same interview, Tebow explained, I want to be around one day to have grandkids, and go out in the yard and play ball with them.

While there are no little Tebows yet, fans are no doubt eager for Tim and his wife, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, a former Miss Universe and Miss South Africa, to start a family. The couple got married in January 2020 in Nel-Peters native South Africa.

The timing of their wedding meant that they spent their first few months of as newlyweds in quarantine. Its been like a prolonged honeymoon, joked Tebow when the couple spoke with E! Online.

His dad, Bob, is another reason he wants to stay and adheres to the keto diet. In a 2016 People interview, Tebow revealed that his father has Parkinsons disease. The diagnosis was difficult for Tebow, and he tries to spend as much time as he can with his dad. The two are close, with Tebow saying, I love being around him. Despite his diagnosis, Bob is still active with the charity he founded, Bob Tebow Evangelistic Association.

In his WebMD interview, Tebow also shared what he discovered about Parkinsons disease and eating a high-fat, low-carb diet:

There are so many correlations[,] what I was doing with keto, and what was bad for Parkinsons[.] Too many carbohydrates are just poison for you, and how your brain, it so wants to have good fats I said, You know what, this isnt just something I want to do for sports. Its something I want to do for a lifestyle.'

RELATED: Tom Bradys Diet Would Be a Disaster for Regular People

Tebow isnt the only retired NFL player to go low-carb. Former Cleveland Brown Joe Thomas credits keto, along with intermittent fasting, with staying fit after retirement. So how exactly does the keto diet work?

Harvard Medical School reports that for followers of the keto diet, approximately 80% of their calories come from fat, 10% from carbohydrates, and 10% from protein. For many people, this means their carb intake is strictly limited, between 20 and 50 grams daily. When carbs arent available to burn as fuel, the body begins burning fat in a state called ketosis.

Keto isnt the only specialty diet that current and retired NFL players adhere to stay fit year-round. Tom Brady follows the TB12, avoiding gluten, caffeine, sugars, and dairy. Former tight end Tony Gonzalez also foregoes dairy and most red meat, opting for a diet rich in fish, chicken, and fruits and vegetables.

What you need to know about grain-free dog food and possible connection to fatal heart disease – CBS17.com

Posted: September 9, 2020 at 5:52 am

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) Theres an old expression that you are what you eat, and in the case of your dogwhat he or she eats may be causing them to develop a fatal disease.

When it comes to dogs, grain-free diets are a big thing, but there are real concerns about grain-free dog diets.

Grain-Free its a market that food makers are capitalizing on. It includes food as well as treats as owners try and keep their pets away from grain believing its a healthier lifestyle for their canine friend.

But, the FDA says it is seeing a worrying connection between grain-free dog food and deadly heart disease.

The FDA has noted an association or correlation between dogs on a grain-free diet and a particular kind of disease called Dilated Cardiomyopathy, said Dr. Charles Livaudais, a veterinarian at Harmony Animal Hospital in Apex.

The disease literally causes the heart muscle in a dog to become thin and weak making the heart pump inefficiently.

Livaudais said, signs of it include exercise intolerance, lethargy, increased breathing rates, panting and weight loss.

Although more research needs to be done, the working theory is that the potatoes, peas, lentils, and other legumes, the grain-free dog food might be stripping away a dogs ability to absorb Taurinean amino acid that helps build muscles. Since the heart is a muscle, its affected.

Livaudais says the damage caused by grain free diets might not be permanent.

When it comes to grain-free diets and the association there, if it is caught in time, the damage seems to be reversible if we take the dog off the grain-free diet, he said.

However, he said, the reversal has varied from dog to dog, but it would seem to take weeks to several months.

Whether its 100 percent reversible is a fair question, said Livaudais. We dont know that.

Veterinarians recommend your dogs food contain a protein source be it beef or chicken as well as traditional ingredients.

It probably makes sense to utilize a diet that has more standard carbohydrates that include grains at this point, said Livaudais.

Exercise and Diet Are More Important Than Ever With Virus at Large – California Healthline

Posted: September 9, 2020 at 5:52 am

If your life these days is anything like mine, a pre-pandemic routine that included regular exercise and disciplined eating has probably given way to sedentary evenings on a big chair, binge-watching reruns of your favorite TV series while guzzling chocolate ice cream or mac n cheese.

But lets not beat ourselves up about it. Several doctors I spoke with recently said most of their patients and many of their colleagues are struggling to maintain healthy habits amid the anxiety of the pandemic. The Quarantine 15 (pounds, that is) is a real phenomenon.

The double challenge of protecting our health, including our immune systems, while battling unhealthy temptations is a struggle everyone is dealing with, says Dr. David Kilgore, director of the integrative medicine program at the University of California-Irvine.

Well before COVID-19, more than 40% of U.S. adults were obese, which puts them at risk for COVID-19s worst outcomes. But even people accustomed to physical fitness and good nutrition are having trouble breaking the bad habits theyve developed over the past five months.

Karen Clark, a resident of Knoxville, Tennessee, discovered competitive rowing later in life, and her multiple weekly workouts burned off any excess calories she consumed. But the pandemic changed everything: She could no longer meet up with her teammates to row and stopped working out at the YMCA.

Suddenly, she was cooped up at home. And, as for many people, that led to a more sedentary lifestyle, chained to the desk, with no meetings outside the house or walks to lunch with colleagues.

I reverted to comfort food and comfortable routines and watching an awful lot of Netflix and Amazon Prime, just like everybody else, Clark says. When I gained 10 pounds and I was 25, I just cut out the beer and ice cream for a week. When you gain 12 pounds at 62, its a long road back.

She started along that road in July, when she stopped buying chips, ice cream and other treats. And in August, she rediscovered the rowing machine in her basement.

But dont worry if you lack Clarks discipline, or a rowing machine. You can still regain some control over your life.

A good way to start is to establish some basic daily routines, since in many cases thats exactly what the pandemic has taken away, says Dr. W. Scott Butsch, director of obesity medicine at the Cleveland Clinics Bariatric and Metabolic Institute. He recommends you bookend your day with physical activity, which can be as simple as a short walk in the morning and a longer one after work.

And, especially if you have kids at home who will be studying remotely this fall, prepare your meals at the beginning of the day, or even the beginning of the week, he says.

If you havent exercised in a while, start slow and gradually get yourself up to where you can tolerate an elevated heart rate, says Dr. Leticia Polanco, a family medicine doctor with the South Bay Primary Medical Group, just south of San Diego. If your gym is closed or you cant get together with your regular exercise buddies, there are plenty of ways to get your body moving at home and in your neighborhood, she says.

Go for a walk, a run or a bike ride, if one of those activities appeals to you. Though many jurisdictions across the United States require residents to wear masks when out in public, it may not be necessary and may even be harmful to some people with respiratory conditions while doing strenuous exercise.

Its clearly hard to exercise with a mask on, says Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, a pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases at Stanford Universitys School of Medicine. We go hiking up in the foothills and we take our masks with us and we dont wear them unless somebody starts coming the other way. Then we will put the mask on, and then we take it off and we keep going.

If you prefer to avoid the mask question altogether, think of your house as a cleverly disguised gym. Put on music and dance, or hula-hoop, Polanco suggests. You can also pump iron if you have dumbbells, or find a cable TV station with yoga or other workout programs.

If you search on the internet for exercise videos, you will find countless workouts for beginners and experienced fitness buffs alike. Try one of the seven-minute workout apps so popular these days. You can download them from Google Play or the Apple Store.

If you miss the camaraderie of exercising with others, virtual fitness groups might seem like a pale substitute, but they can provide motivation and accountability, as well as livestreamed video workouts with like-minded exercisers. One way to find such groups is to search for virtual fitness community.

Many gyms are also offering live digital fitness classes and physical training sessions, often advertised on their websites.

If group sports is your thing, you may or may not have options, depending on where you live.

In Los Angeles, indoor and outdoor group sports in municipal parks are shut down until further notice. The only sports allowed are tennis and golf.

In Montgomery County, Maryland, the Ron Schell Draft League, a softball league for men 50 and older, will resume play early this month after sitting out the spring season due to COVID-19, says Dave Hyder, the leagues commissioner.

But he says it has been difficult to get enough players because of worries about COVID.

In the senior group, you have quite a lot of people who are in a high-risk category or may have a spouse in a high-risk category, and they dont want to chance playing, says Hyder, 67, who does plan to play.

Players will have to stay at least 6 feet apart and wear masks while off the field. On the field, the catcher is the only player required to wear a mask. Thats because masks can steam up glasses or slip, causing impaired vision that could be dangerous to base runners or fielders, Hyder explains.

Whatever form of exercise you choose, remember it wont keep you healthy unless you also reduce consumption of fatty and sugary foods that can raise your risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension all COVID-19 risk factors.

Kim Guess, a dietitian at UC-Berkeley, recommends that people lay in a healthy supply of beans and lentils, whole grains, nuts and seeds, as well as frozen vegetables, tofu, tempeh and canned fish, such as tuna and salmon.

Start with something really simple, she said. It could even be a vegetable side dish to go with what theyre used to preparing.

Whatever first steps you decide to take, now is a good time to start eating better and moving your body more.

Staying healthy is so important these days, more than at any other time, because we are fighting this virus which doesnt have a treatment, says the Cleveland Clinics Butsch. The treatment is our immune system.

Consumers Turn to Plant-Based Foods During the Pandemic – The Beet

As we round the corner on month seven of life during a pandemic, a few lasting truths appear to be emerging: One is that we need to adopt better hygiene, since frequent hand-washing and wearing masks can stop the spread of the virus. The other is that we need to eat better, and if the industry forecasters are correct, American consumers are vastly embracingmore plant-based foods and leaving animal products out of their carts, as awareness about where our food comes from has grown. Americans are choosing healthier food, as well as that which won't impact the planet, and they care more about the way their food is processed.

This new plant-based food trend is driven by flexitarians more than strictly vegan approach since more people are adding plants to their plate than swearing off all animal products. But sales of plant-based foods have outpaced other categories by more than five to one and sales of meatless meat rose 35 percent since the pandemic buying spree began.

If there is a small silver lining to this lastinghealth crisis, it's that we are taking better care of our health by eating fewer animal products and choosing more plant-based options. Since the start of the pandemic, 23 percent more Americans are consuming more plant-based foods, and the sales of plant-based meats is expected to top $1 billion for the first time ever this year, according to the Good Food Institute which reports on trends of plant-based eating. Meanwhile, sales of meat and poultry are down for the first time in six years.

That kind of consumer awareness could just lead to longer life spans in this country, as a shift toward a more plant-based diet is known to be healthier, linked to lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity (and related diseases), hypertension, and cancer.A plant-based diet has also been shown to be helpful in losing unwanted weight.

Ryan Andrews, MS, RD, and author of Drop the Fat and Live Lean, A Guide to Plant-Based Eatingwho works to coach clients on how to switch to healthier habits and adopt plant-based nutrition, has seen a shift in awareness among consumers about where their food comes from, and a desire to eat cleaner, leaner and have less impact on the environment with the choices they make.

"There has been a big shift, especially since the pandemic, in how people are eating," Andrews said when I interviewed him on the topic ofnutrition choices during a pandemic. "People are starting to think about where their food comes from. And if you think about where food comes from, it's going to lead you to a more plant-based diet. Because animal productsare terrible for you, terrible for the planet, and terrible for animals."

Andrewsadds that more people now "have the bandwidth' to pay attention to where their food originates, or is processed, and how that affects their health and the planet. This was due in large part to the myriadstories about thousands of meat plant workers who in May and June were getting sick from COVID-19, in hotspots across 39 states, that forcedthe closure of meat plants. Consumers reacted by turning away from animal products to try plant-based meats instead.

"This has been a pivotal moment and a chance for people to start to think about where their food is coming from," says Andrews. That might only go as far as: 'I wonder who is touching my food?' and 'Is it going to make me sick?' and 'Could I get coronavirus from my food?' " (A recent study found that coronavirus can live for up to three weeks frozen on meat, but so far no confirmed incidents of coronavirus being spread on food have been reported.)

"Different people and different groups are coming at it from different angles," Andrews continues. "To say people are thinking about farms and animals is a stretch, so it's not about that necessarily. But anything that gets people thinking about food and where it comes is a positive thing."

During the pandemic, celebrities have expressed the importance of plant-based eating for the sake of human health and the planetas well as to put an end to animal crueltyand Lewis Hamilton, the Formula 1 driver who is an outspoken advocate of plant-based eating, just announced he will be racing in a new series of cross countryraces in a partnership with Electronic E, the sustainable electric car company, on terrain that has been most dramatically affected by climate change, to raise awareness of what people can do to help slow or turn back the global warming and climate change crisis.

"It's interesting that now, months after the pandemic first hit, there is definitely a higher level of awareness about what is happening on the planet and how our diets connect to that," says Andrews. In his book he said there were more people who believe they've seen signs of alien life in the universe than have chosen to eat a strictly vegan diet. So the growth is not about pure veganism as a way of life, but about adding plant-based foods for health and the planet.

'I'll do an informal survey when I speak to a group about nutrition and ask: Who cares about the animals? And 100 percent say they do. But when it comes to investigating where their food comes from, and the impact their food choices have on their health and the planet,it's a smaller group since they are aware of the impact food has on animals and the planet but they are not all ready to give up all their favorite foods. It's easier to add plant-based foods instead, so that's where I encourage people to begin," he adds.

"Theylove the idea of just adding more and more plant-based foods to their diet, and eventually that leads to less and less animal products. I call itPositive Dietary Displacement."

This may not be popular in the vegan community, but more consumers want to eat more plant-based foods without swearing off all meat and dairy, he says, and that's what he sees when he coaches people who want to eat better. "To me, it's not a binary issue, of animal products versus no animal products.People just want to eat better to be healthy."

Some people might think, 'I need meat to be strong or healthy.' and since I don't want to dismiss anybody from the start and say that is false and it's a myth, instead I will work with them to help them understand that you can get protein from plants and you can get calcium, iron, magnesium, and all your vitamins and nutrients without needing to eat animal product. But it's an educationwhen I start working with people, and individuals come with a set idea of what they need.

"Everything from genetics to digestion to food preference comes to play. Individuals walk in with their own preconceived ideas of what they want or need to eat, and there is nuance to helping them give up foods they are used to eating. Maybe some people need one thing or another [to start]. Then they learn about how plant-based eating is healthier and they are ready to move more in that direction," he adds.
