7 Ways to Eat Less Meat to Lose Weight, Lower Heart Disease Risk – The Beet

You always hear about how to eat more plants. But when was the last time somebody talked to you about eating less meat? Granted, moving to a 100 percent whole-food plant-based diet is optimal for your health, and according to the work of Dr. Dean Ornish and other leading heart doctors, the only diet thats been shown to not only prevent but actually reverse heart disease is a whole-food plant-based diet.

Studies have linked the saturated fat in red meat to heart disease: The fat causes buildup of plaque in yourblood vessels which restricts oxygen and nutrients from getting from your heart to the rest of your bodyorgans, brain, lungswhich is the onset of heart disease.

Studies have also linked plant-based diets, which are higher in fiber,to lowering or controlling blood sugar, which leads to weight loss and the reversal of high blood sugar, as well as pre-diabetes and diabetes in patientswhoditch meat and add more fiber-filled vegetables, fruits, nuts and seedsto their diets.

One study foundthat people who cut out meat lost 4.5 pounds more than people who didnt, over an 18 week period.Dieters who go vegetarian not only lose weight more effectively than those on low-calorie diets but also improve their metabolism by reducing muscle fat, thestudy found.

However, if youve grown up thinking that eating animals isnt only normal but necessary, that kind of wholesale change to eating zero meat can be hard. Yet its possible, and with the strategies experts outline below, you can learn how to eat less meat.

Start by thinking of your favorite foods. Most of them will already have a meatless alternative, says Amy Longard, plant-based chef and registered holistic nutritionist in Ottawa, Ontario. For instance, if you like burritos, swap out the chicken for pinto or refried beans, and skip the sour cream or cheesebut add extra guacamole. Even if you like pizza and burgers, the same thing applies: All of these foods are now available in tasty vegetarian versions and are widely available at restaurants, fast food chains, and well-stocked grocery stores, she adds.

While not ideal for the long-term, these meat alternatives provide a great "bridge" as you transition to a more plant-centric diet. Although its best not to do this as a long-term strategy, theres nothing wrong with using these products as an initial step, says Leslie Elder, M.D., internal medicine physician in Portland, Ore. Fortunately, no matter where you shop or where you live, you can always find plant-based meat alternatives. Even grocery store chains like Kroger are rolling out their own versions.

Most Americans plate their meals with meat as the focus, which means theyre eating bigger portions of meat than even some organizations say is okay. As a result, you consume more saturated fat, cholesterol and other unhealthy things. Instead, to help make this transition easier, think of your meat as a side and not the entre. This can be as satisfying as having a larger amount of meat, Elder says. Plus, with less meat, youll have more room for other things like vegetables, fruit and legumes, and whole grains, or favorites like rice and beans.

When was the last time you pulled over and took a bite out of roadkill? Wouldnt ever consider doing it? Yet chew on this: That meat youre eating is little more than the flesh of a dead animal but because its been heavily seasoned and/or sauced, your tastebuds are turned on. As Elder says, Most people consider the ketchup or barbecue sauce to be more important than the burger. Think of bacon, for instance. If it were served to you as a slab of plain meat and not smoked or salted, you probably wouldnt like it. The upshot? Add spices and sauces to the plant-based foods youre trying, and you may be surprised how much you like them.

This global movement, which got its start in the United States during World War II, and then picked up by Sir Paul McCartney and given a cultural boost as "Meat Free Monday" in honor of his late wife, Linda, encourages people to go meatless every Monday. Try it. Who knows? You might feel so great as a result that you start moving to other days of the week. Have fun with Meatless Taco Tuesdays, trying Impossible versus Beyond or try Gardein versus Dr. Praeger's options, and do a blind taste test with the family. They may be surprised and ask, which one is the meat? You can answer, None of them!

If youre following the standard American diet, youre probably eating animal products with every meal: Eggs and sausage for breakfast, a chicken sandwich or salad for lunch, and a burger at night. Yet by limiting animal foods to lunch alone, youre a step closer to going meatless, and you gain a digestive edge. Meats are heavy foods, and your digestion is naturally strongest in the middle of the day, Elder says. In other words, if you are eating meat, youll do a better job of processing and assimilating it at noon. Of course, this doesnt negate the health consequences of eating meat but try this tactic and youll at least be eating less. This could even inspire you to take the meat out of lunches down the road.

If youre cooking meat-based dishes at home, replace half of the meat in your dish with mushrooms or beans, which in a pasta sauce or burger will add taste, fiber, and nutrients. Studies show that youll be just as satisfied as if you used 100 percent meat, and its yet another way to push the meat out of your diet.

My name is Kimberly Hooks (@kimberly_hooks). I am 30 years old and live in Las Vegas, where I work for a health care company. I wanted to be able to show up for my three energetic sons, so I researched intermittent fasting and OMAD and lost over 50 pounds in one year.

I have always been overweight, or the "bigger" one out of all my friends and siblings. I remember a significant point in elementary school where students had to get health IDs in case of emergencies, and it had all of our information on it like our name, birthday, height, and weight. I remember seeing 105 pounds and thinking how shocking that was, considering I was only in the fifth grade. I knew it was so sad for a 10-year-old girl to think so negatively about herself.

Going into high school and college, I became very insecure about my body and developed an eating disorder because I thought thats how I could lose weight the fastest. I struggled with that eating disorder through college and even after that.

My husband and kids were all sleeping, and I walked into the bathroom and just looked at myself in the mirror for a long time. I thought to myself, "How did I get here?" My self-esteem was at an all-time low. My youngest was eight months old at the time, but I looked like I was still eight months pregnant with him. I knew then that I had to make a change. I took some pictures of myself and started my weight loss journey the next day.

I initially started by trying to eat a plant-based diet, but that didnt last very long. I was on YouTube searching how to lose weight, and a lot of results popped upbut what intrigued me the most was intermittent fasting. I began to watch videos on intermittent fasting and decided to give it a try.

I ate my lunch and dinner and did not snack in between. I also drank at least a gallon of water a day. After about seven to eight months, I decided to try the "one meal a day" (OMAD) intermittent fasting method and absolutely fell in love with that lifestyle and schedule. (OMAD is a restrictive form of fasting, and it won't be right for everyone. This is just what works for me. Talk to your doctor or a nutritionist before trying it yourself.)

I did not start exercising right away. Whenever I tried, I didn't feel comfortable in my body so I gave up. But in March 2018, after I lost those 12 pounds, I felt ready and decided to get a gym membership at Planet Fitness.

I started by walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes and using weight machines here and there, but I didnt really know what I was doing.

Right now, a typical week of exercise for me always includes jumping rope or bike riding. I have really grown to love the two, and they're great ways for me to decompress after a work day. And with bike riding, we do it as a family, so its great to include my boys and husband on my journey.

I also do a little resistance training with weights and bands I have at home, since I havent been back to the gym since all the shutdowns happened.

I want everyone to know something: Just because you gain some weight back does not mean youve failed in any way. Some days you will fall down, but the most important thing is not to stay down.

I have had to refocus and reevaluate what Im doing. Ive had to shift from trying to be thin, to thinking about doing whats best for my body. And thats not trying to shrink it down to the smallest it could go.

Ive shifted my mindset to wanting to be *strong.* I am a mom of three boys who have never-ending energy, and I have to keep up with them. I am still on a weight loss journey, but this time its different. I no longer strive to have the body type of someone else. I dont look down on myself anymore and think my body will never look like theirs. Good! Its not supposed to anyway. I just had to change my mindset.

Last week, Kelly Osbourne shared a selfie showing off her purple hair and 85-pound weight loss. Now, the reality star opened up about how she achieved it on a new podcast. Not only did she change her lifestyle in a meaningful way, but she had gastric sleeve surgery to nudge her in the right direction.

I had surgery; I dont give a f*** what anyone has to say, Kelly said on the Hollywood Raw podcast, according to People. I did it, Im proud of it.... I did the gastric sleeve. All it does is change the shape of your stomach. I got that almost two years ago. I will never ever ever lie about it ever. It is the best thing I have ever done.

Kelly says she also went to therapy for a year to tackle her emotional eating tendencies before going in for surgery. "The number one thing I had to do was get happy," she said. "I had to fix my head before I could fix my body. You can never go into this if youre not in a good mindset."

She also adopted healthy eating and exercise habits. The kind of surgery I had if you dont work out and you dont eat right, you gain weight. All it does is move you in the right direction, Kelly added. "It doesnt solve all your problems. Its not a quick fix.

Kelly admitted that working on shows like Fashion Police, made her "resentful" of the entertainment industry once she lost the weight, since she felt "invisible" for so long beforehand. This has been two years of me working on this. Figuring out if I wanted to be in this industry, figuring out if I was even capable of even losing this weight, she said. I did, and I figured out I wanted to keep going. I didnt do this for anyone. It was a long process, and now Im here and everybody is noticing.

Last week, when Kelly shared the Instagram photo, Olivia TuTram Mai, a.k.a. TV personality Jeannie Mai's mom, commented under Kelly's post. "Oh my gosh, you lost a lot of weight ," wrote Mai. Replying to her comment, Kelly admitted she's actually down 85 pounds. "@themamamai that's right mamma Mai I lost 85lbs since I last saw you. Can you believe it? Kaakakaka."

The internet is filled with blogs and articles offering advice for parents who are trying to coax children into eating greens. Anyone with kids can relate to stories of mealtimes becoming a succession of attritional confrontations, where you cycle through ineffectual strategies before accepting the reality of the situation and plead with your toddler to simply take one bite of broccoli. In the end, it doesnt matter how much gravy you pour on fish, or cheese you melt on cauliflower fussy toddlers know what youre up to.

If we could converse with animals, they would also relate to these stories, as many species have a seemingly irrational dislike of anything unfamiliar and are more likely to eat new food after watching other individuals try it. Fussy eating can be an important way of avoiding toxic food, as witnessing other individuals eat new foods might tell them that its safe.

But fascinatingly, fussy eating may also indicate the presence of teaching in animals. Despite 30 years of research on the topic, there are still few examples of teaching in other species, making it difficult to understand how such behaviour might have evolved. My colleagues and I recently conducted research in the Atlantic forest of Brazil that provides new evidence that some animals may effectively teach their young what foods are safe to eat.

There are plenty of examples of fussy eating among animals. Young marmoset monkeys are slow to eat new food when alone, but are more willing to take a risk and try it if they are surrounded by family. Similarly, capuchins eat more unfamiliar food when group members also do so.

There are instances where food handling is linked to teaching in animals. The way in which meerkats show their young how to safely handle scorpions for eating is one well-known illustration. At first, young pups are given dead scorpions to familiarise them with the dangerous insect. As the meerkats grow up, adults remove the sting from live scorpions so that the pups can learn how to deal with the prey. Then intact animals are gradually introduced.

As a behaviour, this meets the three criteria scientists use to identify teaching in animals. An individual changes its behaviour in the presence of an observer, at a cost or no benefit to themselves, and this change leads to learning in another individual. In the case of the meerkats, although an escaped scorpion might represent a lost lunch, the exercise leads to learning in the young observer.

This kind of research has helped challenge the long-held assumption that teaching is a uniquely human practice. But the overall dearth of evidence means there is still debate.

In particular, its not always clear that instances where animals learn to eat new foods because of other individuals around them really meet the criteria for teaching. For example, there is limited evidence that adult golden lion tamarin monkeys, which are known to have a varied diet that includes insects and fruits, might teach their young about diet by sharing and transferring food.

If such food transfers do have a teaching function, we would expect them to meet the three criteria I mentioned before. The tamarins would transfer more unfamiliar food than familiar food because this would create the opportunity for learning.

On two recent visits to Brazil, we studied this behaviour by introducing familiar and unfamiliar foods to wild groups of tamarins. Initially, we introduced these foods when young tamarins were dependent on their family, enabling us to look at how adult tamarins transferred food within their family group.

Six months later, when the young tamarins were independent, we returned to find that their food choices were influenced by their parents. The tamarins did not, as we had expected, transfer more unfamiliar food than familiar food. But they did transfer more food they had grown accustomed to than the food they had never tried.

Despite not clearly demonstrating teaching because it doesnt meet all the criteria, this evidence appears to show that adult tamarins assess new food first before passing it on to others. This is still significant for juveniles, as they learn about what to include in their diet from the food that they receive from adults.

It is possible that food transfers in golden lion tamarins serve several functions simultaneously, depending on the identity of the individual receiving the food, and the food type being transferred. Further research could look at how tamarins transfer insects to see if there is a general pattern.

We also need to investigate whether adult tamarin gain any benefit, such as decreased harassment or increased social bonds, by transferring food to their young. Such information would help us come closer to understanding whether some animals really can be taught to overcome their fussy eating.

Study finds there’s no safe amount of coffee for pregnant women – Insider – INSIDER

Pregnant women should avoid coffee, soda, and other caffeine-containing products for the safest pregnancy possible, according to a review of 48 existing studiespublished in the journal BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine.

Caffeine can cause a person's heart rate and blood pressure to spike, Insider previously reported, two conditions that can negatively impact a fetus during pregnancy.

For the review, researchers from Reykjavik University in Iceland looked at data from 37 observational studies that were published after 2000, plus 11 articles that reviewed previous studies on caffeine and pregnancy. Those 11 article were published after 1998.

After reviewing the existing findings, they determined any level of caffeine consumption can increase a pregnant woman's risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, and low birth weight.

These findings go against the official existing recommendations in the UK, US, and the European Commission, which all say pregnant women can consume a moderate amount of caffeine, about the equivalent of two cups of coffee, and still be safe.

The researchers said existing guidelines need "radical revision" in light of their findings.

After examining studies on caffeine consumption and miscarriage, nine in total, the researchers found that eight of those studies showed "significant associations," but not a direct link, between the amount of caffeine a pregnant woman consumed and her risk of experiencing a miscarriage.

One of those studies concluded caffeine-consuming pregnant women could be one-third more likely to experience miscarriage than those who don't consume any caffeine.

When it came to stillbirth, or losing a pregnancy after 2o weeks, four of the five studies the researchers examined found caffeine could increase stillbirth risk up to five times if a woman consumed a high level of caffeine.

Of the 10 low birth-weight and caffeine studies the researchers looked at, seven found a caffeine consumption increased low birth-weight risk.

The review's authors didn't look at any randomized controlled trials (the "gold standard" of scientific research), so their conclusions could be flawed.

They relied on observational studies, which can lead to skewed results if a study participant misreports information, or if lifestyle factors like smoking and diet also played a role in a pregnant women's birth outcomes.

Existing recommendations from various countries' health organizations say women can safely consume a moderate amount of caffeine during pregnancy.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology suggests consuming less than 200 mg, which is equal to two cups of coffee, daily if you're pregnant. NHS, the UK's national healthcare organization, has the same recommendation.

And the World Health Organization (WHO), a global organization that offers health recommendations for countries in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Africa, says pregnant women who typically have 300 mg of caffeine daily should lower their intake.

"When it comes to the baby, their metabolism is not yet as sophisticated as an adult's, so it is harder for them to metabolize the caffeine, which means that their sleep pattern could be disrupted and they could become restless," Dr. Isis Amer-Wahlin, obstetrics and gynecology consultant for midwife app Bonzun, previously told Insider.

Caffeine can come from sources other than coffee, like chocolate, soft drinks, and medications, health experts say pregnant women should be cognizant of what they eat and drink.

Arnold Schwarzenegger ditched meat and dairy and has proven that you don't need to eat animal products to be strong, healthy and reverse symptoms of heart disease. Now 73, he had a pulmonary valve replacement 1997 due to a congenitaldefectandunderwent emergency open-heartsurgery in 2018 to replacethevalve again. Paul Rabil who played for the Boston Cannons and the New York Lizards of Major League Lacrosse, ditched meat and dairy after his 2019 season ended and revealed he's now "officially" vegan on YouTube. "At first [switching to a plant-based diet] was to help solve some pain and trauma that I was going through. Over the last two years, I've had two herniated discs.... and that has led to a ton of shooting pain down my legs, its called sciatica," Rabil explains the purpose of his diet switch.

Rowing is grueling. It's known as the toughest endurance sport in the world. The world record-breaking female rower, Michaela Copenhaverwent vegan in 2012 for ethical reasons, she toldGreat Vegan Athletes.Initially, I just wanted to eat more vegetables. Those things are super good for you, and they're delicious. Beingvegetarianandveganmade me more conscious of how many servings I was getting a day (or not).

When she switched from vegetarian to vegan it was almost accidental: I was traveling for a regatta in the fall of 2012. I had been vegetarian for 1.5 years already but relied pretty heavily on dairy and eggs. While I was traveling, I was bouncing from couch to couch and had no way to safely store dairy or eggsso I decided to try a week without them. I felt great, and it wasnt nearly as scary as I thought. Dear Annie: I am a 27-year-old man who needs help. Recently, I met a guy via the internet. We hit it off and have a lot in common. In addition, he lives in the same state I do. Ive seen pictures of him, so I know what he looks like. He even gave me his phone number. I want to call him so we can stay in contact.

The problem is that Im on the same phone plan as my parents, and they are the type of people who prefer face-to-face meetings and are wary of meeting people over the internet. How do I get them to understand that not all people you meet on the internet are bad people? Different Generation

Dear Different Generation: You are not going to get your parents to change their minds about the internet; and, to be quite honest, their fears have some merit. There are some really bad people online. At the same time, there are plenty of wonderful individuals who have met their future spouses online.

Dont worry about convincing your parents. Just live your life and be smart and safe. And consider paying for your own phone plan.

Loves a parade

Dear Annie: Due to COVID-19, my siblings and I were not able to see our very elderly mother for more than two months. When her birthday came around in May, we created Happy Birthday signs and taped them to our cars. We then proceeded to do a drive-by parade, while beeping our horns and hooting and hollering and waving at her. My siblings ages run between 65 and 57 (there are seven of us), and we all have different health issues. So this drive-by benefited us all, and we got to see and celebrate our 94-year-old mom #AloneTogether. Happy with a Parade
