How to Lose Weight In Your Face – Men’s Health

Posted: August 22, 2020 at 11:56 am

No matter how much you sweat inside your mask this summer, you cant slim down your face specifically. Theres really no such thing as targeted facial weight loss. But there are ways to better expose your jawline or cheekbones (without surgery).

That said, slow and steady full-body weight loss will help you slim down everywhereface included. So dont fall for any hype that promises face-specific results. As much as it would be great to be able to pick and choose where we lose weight, it isn't possible, explains Nicole Avena, Ph.D., a nutrition and dieting expert and neuroscience professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. We really don't have control over where our body loses fat from first when we start to lose weight.

While you cant really lose weight in your face, there are a few things you can do to expose your facial structure if you feel your face is puffier than usual:

Water is attracted to sodium like a magnet, says Melissa Majumdar, R.D., a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Any time we eat foods that are high in sodium, we'll retain more water, which can cause bloating and the feeling of puffiness. To lower your sodium intake, Majumdar recommends cutting down on processed foods (yes, that does include bacon), and boosting your potassium intake to balance out your electrolytes.

Adding in more fresh foods like produce can accomplish both the short-term goal of less puffiness and the long-term goal of weight loss, Majumdar says. She notes that most fruits and vegetables are good sources of potassium. So are legumes, so fill up on foods such as lentils, pinto beans and kidney beans.

If you notice your face looks swollen the morning after a few drinks, thats because alcohol dehydrates the bodyso your skin tries to retain as much water as possible. Cutting down on booze can help, as can making sure you drink enough water.

If changing your diet and cutting out alcohol dont make a difference, you might want to get a check-up. Allergies, a bacterial skin infection called cellulitis, or a sinus problem wont cause weight gain in your face, but can all cause facial swelling, and theyre all treatable.

Black and White women benefit more than men from weight loss late in life – UPI News

Posted: August 22, 2020 at 11:56 am

Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Black and White women benefit the most from late-in-life weight loss, an analysis published Friday by JAMA Network Open found.

Data collected from eight clinical trials revealed women and men of both races lost similar amounts of weight while on calorie-restrictive diets. However, women saw more improvement in their walking ability and balance after dropping the weight, the researchers said.

And, although that older White adults lost 9% of their body weight after being placed on a calorie-restrictive diet, while Black adults lost 6%, the latter group saw more improvement in their walking speeds after dieting, the researchers said.

"The effect of weight loss on physical function varies by race and sex," study co-author Kristen Beavers, an assistant professor of health and exercise science at Wake Forest University, told UPI.

"This suggests that a one-size-fits-all approach to obesity management in older adults might not work," Beavers said.

More than one-third of all American adults aged 65 years and older report some degree of physical disability, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The risk for physical disability is higher for older adults who are overweight and obese, particularly among women and Black Americans, Beavers and her colleagues said.

Research suggests that getting older adults who are overweight and obese to lose weight can help improve their physical function -- including walking ability -- and minimize disability, they said.

However, Black Americans and men have historically been under-represented in these studies, according to the JAMA Network Open researchers.

For this study, Beaver and her colleagues analyzed data from eight clinical trials, collectively enrolling 1,317 participants.

Participants -- 30% of whom were male and 21% of whom were Black Americans -- ranged in age from 62 to 72 years and had a body mass index, or BMI, that met the criteria for obesity, the researchers said

After six months, participants placed on calorie-restrictive diets lost an average of 7.7% of their body weight, with men and women losing about the same amount, the data showed.

However, women included in the analysis saw greater improvements in walking ability, balance and leg strength than men. while Black Americans saw enhanced walking speeds compared to White Americans, according to the researchers.

"If an older adult is living with obesity, often weight loss, especially when coupled with exercise, can improve physical function," Beavers said.

‘The Keto Diet Helped Me Overcome My Fast Food Addiction And Lose 114 Pounds In 2 Years’ – Women’s Health

Posted: August 22, 2020 at 11:56 am

My name is Julia Terranova (@juliagetslean), and I am 25 years old. I live in Newberg, Oregon, and I am a receptionist. After reaching a point of eating too much fast food and getting diagnosed with multiple health ailments, I committed to keto and calorie tracking and took back my health.

Before discovering the keto diet, I struggled with binge eating, especially when it came to fast food. My days revolved around trips to the drive-thru and ordering large portions. I was stopping at McDonald's and Taco Bell two times a day, at the minimum. I hid this habit from everyone, and the weight slowly packed on.

I blamed my weight gain on the fact that I had two babies 14 months apart. I would eat meals at home with my family, then find ways to have a reason to get fast food or coffee drinks at a local coffee shop. I was drinking half my day's calories in one drink, on top of my multiple fast food trips.

I never realized I had a problem until I started to find ways to make extra money to be able to fund my fast food habits. I would look for change and sell old clothes or household items just to be able to feed my addiction.

On top of this, my physical health was struggling. I was newly diagnosed with Crohn's disease, and I also had high blood pressure and prediabetes. I was 100 percent sedentary, aside from helping my toddlers with daily tasks.

We were headed into California, which is a long trip that we did in just one day. I was 23 years old and 300 pounds. The car ride was torturous. The swelling, shooting pains, and constant need to eat just got to be too much. I barely fit into my car's seat, and the seatbelt was digging into my skin.

The next day, when we tried to walk through an amusement park, I couldn't do it. I was struggling. Struggling to catch my breath and to have the energy to keep going. I saw photos of myself that my husband had taken that day and was just in awe that the person in the pictures was truly me.

I had heard of the keto diet, and I researched it during the entire drive home.

I chose the ketogenic diet because it allowed me to incorporate things that worked for my lifestyle, like bunless burgers. I love to eat filling, fattier meals versus things like salads, so it was sustainable for me. I love that the diet allows me to easily find something to eat wherever I go. Anywhere and everywhere can accommodate keto for you, if you just ask.

I also never knew what a carbohydrate really was or even meant until I started tracking my calories and macros. I love the Carb Manager app to track everything from my meals to my water intake to my weight. When I am truly on my tracking game, I lose the most weight.

I joined Planet Fitness and started by walking on the treadmill for about 30 to 40 minutes a day. Eventually, I started trying out machines and watching others do lifting exercises and gave it a shot. I also followed fitness accounts on Instagram that offered free routines.

I started slowly using free weights and incorporated running. Both of these types of exercise truly gave me the confidence that I have now when it comes to working out. I completed my first 5K last November, and that fueled me to keep going and push for a marathon eventually.

These three changes have made the biggest impact on my overall weight loss.

The part that sticks out to me the most is confidence. I truly had no idea how much my weight was holding me back. When I think back about when I first started my journey, I walked around embarrassed, shy, and worried. I always felt judged, and that just led to me eating more. The feeling of freedom that comes from gaining confidence in yourself is worth more than words can describe.

I have grown mentally (not to mention financially!) and changed physically for the better just by deciding to change my eating habits. Putting myself first and taking control of my health has opened so many new doors in my life, and given me a true purpose for not only myself, but also my daughters. I hope that I can be the best example for them. I am proud to say I have taken my health back.

What is teff?

Teff is a tropical grain and is one of Ethiopias staple foods, explained nutritionist Alice Yeates, who works with London-based brand Tobia Teff.

It is usually made into flour for cooking and baking; it has grown in popularity in the West because of it being naturally gluten free.

The grain has been around for years and is the go-to carbohydrate for Ethiopias elite runners, including Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Haile Gebrselassie.

But as awareness of the versatile grain grows, its being dubbed the new quinoa with Hollywood A-listers including Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham said to be fans.

So what makes it so healthy - and superior to other grains?

READ MORE:Dr Michael Mosley on the ideal daily meal plan to lose weight fast

The nutty-tasting grain can be cooked a little like quinoa to make a porridge-like dish - though this isnt the healthiest way to eat it.

Be aware that when made into porridge or traditional Ethiopian injera, the glycaemic index is higher because the water gelatinises the starch, warned Alice.

However, teff is often made into a flour to use for baking cakes or bread, which is why its become so popular in recent years with the rise in demand for gluten-free flours.

While bread and baking arent exactly the mainstays of any weight loss plan, substituting your usual flour for teff - or adding it into your diet in other ways - could help you to snack less as well as give you the nutrition you need to keep your energy levels up.

Teff is high in fibre which slows down the release of sugar into the bloodstream, better than most gluten free flours, commented Alice, who recommended Tobia Teff Organic Brown Flour.

It is higher in protein than regular wholegrain flour, containing about double the quantity, which is a good thing as this also slows down the release of sugar into the bloodstream, and means that the carbohydrates from teff are absorbed more slowly.

Keeping your blood sugar on an even keel is essential if youre watching your weight.

When we eat sugar the body produces insulin to manage the blood sugar, Alice explained.

When there is extra sugar this excess is put down as fat. This means that keeping our insulin production down by balancing the blood sugar helps us to not gain weight.

Whats more, the high protein content is essential for anyone trying to lose a few pounds, especially on a low calorie diet.

If youre eating less, when your body burns fat it can also break down the protein in your muscles - which isnt the outcome you want if youre trying to get lean.

Therefore eating plenty of protein is a must in order to maintain muscle mass.

Teffs high fibre is also beneficial for weight loss because it will help you to feel fuller for longer, aid digestion and feed the good bacteria in your gut - all of which will help you to stick to your weight loss plan.

So how should you use it?

I would use it in baking, either in bread or in cakes, advised Alice.

I always suggest to clients that they substitute half the flour content with ground almonds or almond flour to add protein, so a cake made with half teff and half ground almonds is a great option."

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage are a rich source of phytonutrients

Here's another reason to eat more cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Latest research has found that these veggies can be beneficial for preventing advanced blood vessel disease. Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the study was conducted by researchers of Edith Cowan University. It found that higher consumption of vegetables like broccoli and cabbage can result in less extensive blood vessel disease in older women. Blood vessel disease is a condition which affects arteries and veins (blood vessels). Arteries and veins are responsible for circulating blood in the body.

Reduction of blood flow can be because of build-up of fatty or calcium deposits in inner walls of blood vessels, such as aorta. This build-up can result in heart attack or stroke.

Fibre: Aids Weight Loss, Prevents Constipation And Other Reasons You Should Have It Daily – Doctor NDTV

Posted: August 22, 2020 at 11:56 am

Fibre is needed for several reasons. It fills you up quickly and can reduce your overall intake. It is also a beneficial nutrient for people with diabetes. Read here to know more.

Oats and whole grains are examples of foods rich in fibre

If we try to understand what dietary fibre is, it's simply the portion of food derived from plant cells and analogous carbohydrates which is resistant to digestion (hydrolysis) by the enzymes produced by the human small intestine, but which may undergo complete or partial fermentation in the human large intestine. They are of two types - Soluble and Insoluble. Both are indigestible but soluble fibre dissolves in water and insoluble fibre does not. One more term which we across in relation to fibre is Crude Fibre which is residue remaining after the treatment of food with sulphuric acid, alkali and alcohol and is mainly cellulose. Humans cant digest Cellulose but plays an important role as Fibre

The amount of dietary fibre recommended for a normal healthy adult id 30-40 g/day. About half of this dietary fibre should come from cereals and the other half from fruits and vegetables. The WHO committee on Chronic Degenerative Diseases (2003) has recommended a daily intake of 30 g fibre. A level of 40 g / 2000 Kcal of dietary fibre is generally considered a safe level of intake.

1. Dietary fibre has the ability to retain water and swell up. The swelling up of the soluble fibre increases the viscosity of the intestinal contents and slows down the passage of food through the stomach. As food stays longer in the stomach, there is a feeling of fullness or satiety when we eat a meal rich in soluble fibre. Hence it is very good for controlling weight, it prevents from overeating and at the same time does not contribute majorly to calorie intake

Also read:The Many Health Benefits Of Fibre Other Than Weight Loss You Need To Know

2. Some soluble fibre undergoes fermentation and produce short chain fatty acids like acetate, propionate and butyrate. Butyrate is the main substance for the growth and metabolism of mucosal cells. Fermented soluble fibre can provide 2 kcal/g of fibre

3. It increases the fecal bulk and contribute to soft stools and ease of defecation, the transit time of intestinal contents decreases in the colon and there is regular emptying of the bowel which prevents constipation.

4. Helps in providing relief from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, gall stones, heamorrhoids, and diverticulitis

5. A soluble fibre rich diet helps in lowering blood pressure, blood Glucose and triglyceride level simply because fibre acts a physical barrier between food and enzymes.

Also it should be noted that as fibre absorb a lot of water, one should drink a lot of water along the intake of fibre rich diet, else will result in hard and dry stools. If proper quantity of water is not taken along with fibre intake, it can cause irritation in bowel and may lead to diarrhea.
