Josh Gates On Losing Weight During Quarantine And Fitness In The Field – Forbes

One of the worlds most frequent fliers reveals how he lost more than 30 pounds while staying at home.

Josh Gates has scaled the planets most remote mountains, trekked through its densest jungles and ventured to the depths of its darkest caves. Pre-pandemic, Gates was spending the majority of his year overseas while filming the hit Discovery Channel series Expedition Unknown. It was a lifestyle that made the 43-year-old adventurer an expert at sleeping on airport floors and grabbing mealsany kind of mealson the go.

The result was a lack of regular exercise and healthy diet that Gates says made a healthy lifestyle difficult. But recently, the everymans adventurer has changed his routine, dropping more than 30 pounds since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic while inadvertently documenting the results onscreen. This week, I connected with Gates to see how one of the worlds most frequent fliers views fitness in the field.

Joe Sills: What is your typical travel schedule like?

Josh Gates: Pre-pandemic, it was being overseas 200-plus days a year. We have a really aggressive travel schedule at Expedition Unknown. We spend a lot of time out of the country and we spend most of the time that we are back either preparing for the next expedition or writing, editing and getting shows ready to air. It really is a year-round lifestyle.

Joe Sills: It sounds more like a lifestyle than a job.

Josh Gates: Yes. It is. When you are out there on the road, everything you do is servicing the show. We are not really in tourist destinations usually. We are out there in the middle of the jungle, out in the desert somewhere, or at an archaeological site. Everything you are doing is about trying to tell the story of whatever legend or mystery or artifact we are studying that week.

Joe Sills: When did you make the conscious decision to lose weight while you were at home?

Josh Gates: I think everybody during the pandemic has gone one of two ways: either you havent paid attention to your fitness at all and youre at home and stuffing your face. Or, like a lot of people, you have become goal-oriented because you can focus on different things.

I spent a few weeks sitting at home not doing much, and it kind of hit meI have this time and it is important to use this time. Theres so much about this current situation that is tragic, but it is also a real shakeup for most of us from this routine that we are in. For me, the pandemic was an opportunity to craft a new routine.

Joe Sills: At last check, you said youve lost about 35 pounds since March. Describe your journey with weight.

Josh Gates: I am kind of a lifelong lose weight, gain weight kind of guy. Im a big guy; Ive always been a big guy. I go through phases where I am being really disciplined and lose weight. Then, I go through phases where I am super stressed out and stuck in an editing bay all day or unable to find healthy food, or Im eating chips on the side of the road on the other side of the world somewhere.

It really depends, I kind of go up and down like most people.

Joe Sills: How easy is it to just order takeout when youre in the editing bay?

Josh Gates: I think thats where most of us get into troublewith prepacked, processed food. A lot of our weight struggles in general have to do with that. Sometimes, the easiest food to get your hands on is the stuff thats the worst for you. Its the most high in saturated fat. Its the most calorie dense, and its really the least nutritiously beneficial stuff.

Theres a reason fast food is popular: its cheap and easy to get.

I have a mindless diet and a conscious diet. My mindless diet is pizza and carbs. I love carbs. I could go forever without eating ice cream and sweets, but for me the pizza and bread are weak spots. I have to moderate that. If you want to lose weight, limiting carb intake and eating a lot of fresh vegetables while being conscious of your sugar intake works.

Joe Sills: Have you ever felt limited in the field because you were riding that rollercoaster and maybe weighed a little more than you wanted to at the time?

Josh Gates: Yeah, I think that and age. Adventuring around the world is a young mans game. I am not in my 20s anymore. But a lot of it isnt so much that I am out of breath. I actually have pretty good endurance still. I can go hike up a mountain and carry a heavy pack for a long time. Its my knees that are not as strong as they used to be and my flexibility. Its my core strength.

If you havent worked out in a while, the first week or two can be miserable. But, once you start getting into it again and being active, its amazing how incredibly quick you gain back a lot of that muscle memory and that strength.

Joe Sills: Tell me about your workout routine. What are you doing now to stay fit?

Josh Gates: I think a lot of people are intimidated by figuring out their perfect workout routine. For me, its a much more simple philosophy. Its about moving. Its about being active. I am not trying to get into a specific kind of shape or train for a specific thing. I am at my best when I am being active every day and making time in my schedule every single day to go jogging or hiking or go for a walk. Even a simple 30-minute walk can do wonders for your day. My routine is a combination of that and monitoring what I eat.

I am a big believer in calorie tracking. Its not for everyonebecause it requires a lot of attentionbut for a lot of us who kind of mindlessly eat, it works. I am kind of a stress eater, and a fitness tracking app can do wonders for that. It is so instructional to see what you think you eat in a day compared to what you really eat in a day.

A lot of the things that we mindlessly eat, like a bag of chips or a snack, are not even a satisfying experience to eat. They are just a quick carb load or sugar rush. For me, its about being mindful. I have a great relationship with my Apple Watch and my calorie tracking app. I use it everyday and just let that keep me honest.

Joe Sills: Your new show, Josh Gates Tonight started right when the pandemic hit, and its interesting to literally watch your weight loss journey unfold weekly onscreen. How did that show come about?

Josh Gates: It was something of a weird miracle. We were well-positioned to film something when the pandemic hit, because we make a lot of after shows for Expedition Unknown that are kind of in the wheelhouse of a talk show already. We also had lights and cameras laying around, and because I am very involved in the show already, I have some facility to set that stuff up.

Really quickly, we threw Josh Gates Tonight together in a spare bedroom in my house, which had bookcases in it that looked sort of adventurous and had some of my artifacts on them. Then, we started having conversations with people over Zoom. At the time, we didnt know how that was going to translate onscreen but it has become the norm.

Its been a fascinating adventure for me. Its a different muscle to flex and I am having such a blast talking to celebrities and really interesting people, while giving folks a break every week that lets them have some fun.

Joe Sills: As someone whose career is based onscreen, people might assume you are always comfortable in your own skin. Do you ever find yourself looking back at old footage and not loving the way you look?

Josh Gates: No. I think you cant get too caught up in that or you are chasing the wrong thing. I have just always been a big guy. Ive never been some buff adventure dude. But the thing about me is I am authentically this guy. I travel the world. I climb up mountains. I go to really distant, exotic and far away places. I know that I walk the walk. I am that guy.

I have never felt pressured by any network I have ever worked for or anybody to change the way that I look.

I think all of us would love to snap our fingers and be Chris Pratt, but in the real world, as long as I am able to get out there and move around and have adventures and go to all of the places that the show takes us, I feel great about it.

Making Expedition Unknown is such a challenge. Just to get access to the places we go and investigate these stories, following them to the places that those tales take us around the world is a challenge. Thats where my focus really is, and I try to be as healthy as I can be along the way.

Joe Sills: I feel like you are a normal guy and youre inspirational to other normal guys who want to do great things.

Josh Gates: I think thats a big part of the appeal of the show. When people watch Expedition Unknown, the impression I want to give them is that they are along for the journey. In order to invite somebody on a trip and take them with you around the world, you have to have authenticity. What we are not trying to do is present this overly heroic version of things.

We go, we have these adventures; but we also want to show all of the flat tires and bad food and the things that go wrong that go along with it. Part of the mission of the show is keeping it real, in that sense.

Joe Sills: Is Josh Gates Tonight going to continue until youre able to film Expedition Unknown again?

Josh Gates: Like all things right now, that is a bit of a mystery. The show has been really well received. It is rating really well, so I think we are all really happy to keep making it for now.

We are having great conversations with great guests every week. We have had on famous athletes like Shaq. We have had famous actors and archaeologists and explorers. Neil deGrasse Tyson is coming on soon. Its an awesome way to see the world and hang out and have a cocktail with interesting people every week.

That said, I am excited to travel. Thats my thing. It has been supremely weird for me to not get on an airplane. That has been my life. I lived on airlines and lived on airport floors. My whole life was based on the weird ecosystem of airports, so thats been a huge adjustment for me. I miss that world. Its what I love to do, so I am hopeful to get back out to adventuring the world soon, but I am also really happy that fans love Josh Gates Tonight.

Joe Sills: As a new talk show host, is there a guest you would find intimidating to interview. Say, David Letterman?

Josh Gates: I would be terrified to talk to David Letterman. Terrified.

There are definitely guests who I sat down and fired up the Zoom for, and I was nervous with sweaty palms. But the longer I do the show, the more I am able to sit down and realize that all of the folks are going through the same thing the rest of us are. All of the red carpet glitz and glamour they are usually framed in has been stripped away. They are just hanging out. Their kids are in the background, and they are just down-to-earth, interesting people with amazing life stories that want to chat.

Joe Sills: Can you give the readers a detailed artifact to spot in the background of your set? Something that has a cool story behind it?

Josh Gates: I have to tell you that my office on the show is actually my office. It is not a fake set. It really is the room I work out of. We redesigned it a bit during the pandemic. It has a lot more detail behind me, because we took a lot of my items out of storage and dressed the back of the room nicely. But almost everything behind me is real.

There are masks from countries I have been to. There is an architectural piece from a beautiful Indonesian traditional house that was gifted to me. There are a bunch of spears I have collected. We did an episode on Nefertiti and theres a 3D print of her face behind me. I have hidden many Easter eggs on the set that I like to see if people can see or call out. So if youre an eagle-eyed viewer, you can spot those.

Who will make the difference between winning and losing for UNT this fall? Here are 10 key players to know – Denton Record Chronicle

North Texas is quickly closing in on its 2020 season assuming it goes off in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mean Green finished 4-8 last fall and will look to bounce back under Seth Littrell, beginning with its season-opener on Sept. 5 at Apogee Stadium against Houston Baptist.

A whole lot has happened since the end of last season, including the departure of record-setting quarterback Mason Fine and the arrival of a few key transfers.

That makes now as good a time for a bit of a reset and a look at the players UNT will depend on heading into the season.

This is not a straight list of UNTs top players. Its a look at the names UNT fans should know heading into the season:

1. Austin Aune

Sophomore QB / 6-foot-2, 216 pounds

2019 stats: 4-of-5 passing, 136 yards, 1 touchdown

Breakdown: The biggest question UNT faces heading into the season is who will take over for Fine, the two-time Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year.

Aune is one of a handful of quarterbacks in the race for the starting job and is one of the more intriguing players on UNTs roster. The former Argyle standout and TCU signee gave up football after he was drafted in the second round of the Major League Baseball draft out of high school.

He spent six years playing in the New York Yankees system but never made much headway. He decided to play football again and landed at UNT.

Aune has barely seen any live action in football since he was a senior in 2011.

The Mean Green are hoping Aune can regain the form that made him one of the top quarterbacks in Texas his senior year.

2. Jason Bean

Sophomore QB / 6-foot-3, 189 pounds

2019 stats: 22-of-35 passing, 176 yards, 3 touchdowns; 13 carries for 80 yards

Breakdown: Bean served as Fines primary backup last season and is competing with Aune to start this fall. He is one of the faster and more athletic quarterbacks UNT has. The question is if he can translate those physical skills to the field and cut down on mistakes. He threw three interceptions in 2019, when he also lost a fumble in a loss to Louisiana Tech.

3. Jaelon Darden

Senior WR / 5-foot-9, 174 pounds

2019 stats: 76 catches, 736 yards, 12 touchdowns

Breakdown: Darden was UNTs lone first-team All-Conference USA selection last season when he led the Mean Green in all three major receiving categories. The senior excels at working the middle of the field and just makes plays. He enters his senior season with 156 catches for 1,592 yards and 19 touchdowns. Darden will be a vital security blanket for whoever takes over as UNTs quarterback.

4. Dion Novil

Senior DT / 6-foot-4, 330 pounds

2019 stats: 61 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks

Breakdown: Novil might be the best overall player on UNTs roster. The senior is a load in the middle of the Mean Greens defensive front and is athletic enough to make plays behind the line of scrimmage. UNT is expected to employ a three-man front this fall under new coordinator Clint Bowen. The Mean Green desperately need to improve defensively after allowing 32.5 points per game last season. Novil will be a big part of UNTs plans to reach that goal.

5. Jyaire Shorter

Sophomore WR / 6-foot-2, 215 pounds

2019 stats: 24 catches, 473 yards, 9 touchdowns

Breakdown: Shorter emerged as one of UNTs top playmakers in 2019 when he caught nine touchdown passes as a redshirt freshman. The Killeen native has a rare combination of size and speed that make him a matchup nightmare. Fine found Shorter on deep passes repeatedly last season. The question heading into 2020 is if UNT will be able to find a quarterback who can get Shorter the ball.

6. Tre Siggers

Junior RB / 5-foot-8, 200 pounds

2019 stats: 152 carries for 853 yards and 6 touchdowns in 10 games

Breakdown: Siggers emerged as one of UNTs top players last season after moving to running back from safety. He rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown in a loss to SMU in his season debut in the second week of the season. Siggers went on to rush for at least 75 yards in seven games. The former Duncanville standout is a bruising runner and will be among a host of talented running backs UNT can lean on.

7. Manase Mose

Junior OL / 6-foot-1, 292 pounds

2019 stats: 12 starts at right guard

Breakdown: Mose has started all 25 games of his career at right guard and will be vitally important for UNT as it looks to rebuild its offensive line after losing four seniors following the 2019 season. The Mean Green have just two offensive linemen who started games last season returning in Mose and fellow junior Jacob Brammer. UNT will look to that duo for leadership up front. Mose is the Mean Greens best offensive lineman.

8. KD Davis

Junior LB / 5-foot-11, 229 pounds

2019 stats: 88 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries

Breakdown: Davis led UNT in tackles as a sophomore and was a steady performer for a defense that struggled overall. The former Ennis standout came to UNT as a defensive back but has put on weight and grown into the linebacker role. Hes listed at 229 pounds now, up 15 pounds from last season. UNT will look to Davis to help lead the way as it looks to improve on the 13 turnovers it forced last season.

9. Tyreke Davis

Senior LB / 5-foot-10, 220 pounds

2019 stats: 80 tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 7 quarterback hurries

Breakdown: Davis was among UNTs best playmakers on defense in 2019, when he led the Mean Green with 14 tackles for loss. The former Ryan standout has put on 11 pounds since last season and should be better equipped to handle the rigors of the year. UNT will need Davis to continue making plays as it looks to improve its performance on defense.

10. DeAndre Torrey

Senior RB / 5-foot-7, 195 pounds

2019 stats: 73 carries for 380 yards and 2 touchdowns in 10 games, 491 kickoff return yards, 96 receiving yards

Breakdown: Torrey led UNT in all-purpose yards with 967 last season and has been a productive player in his two seasons with the Mean Green. He has rushed for 1,357 yards in his time at UNT. The Mean Green are arguably deeper at running back than any other position, but Torrey is the type of player UNT needs to get the ball to on a consistent basis.

JACKSON TWP. This spring and summer have been unusual in a number of ways. The string of 90-degree temperature days throughout the end of June and July were a bit out of the norm. The drought conditions of late July and early August are different. But the most unusual part of this spring and summer has been the stay at home order and all of the summer events being canceled because of the pandemic.

While the kids have gotten outside to ride bikes, walk and play with friends, many adults are working from home, doing curbside shopping and generally not getting out and being as active as normal.

While it is easy to just spend every day in front of a computer or watching television or maybe doing some gardening a couple times a week, many experts say it is healthier for all ages to get active and stay active. It is important for physical and as well as mental health.

"There are three areas of focus when thinking of staying active; circulation of blood, improving muscle flexibility and strength and a persons well-being and mental health," said Lisa Fox, a physical therapist at Mercy Medical Center in Jackson Township

For circulation, Fox said that staying active helps keep the heart healthy, helps with breathing and boosts the immune system which can help fight or prevent illnesses and viruses. Moving or exercising can improve circulation which circulates the antibodies and the white blood cells.

"It is always best to get evaluated or get a checkup from your primary doctor before beginning any exercise program. People with previous injuries or with arthritis need to make sure they are safe to exercise. Here at Mercy Medical, we can customize a plan of care for stretching and strengthening based on the persons age and their current activity level," Fox said.

Activities like walking or exercise also eases stress because it by releases endorphins as well as relieving anxiety. Fox said that stress increases muscle tension in the neck or lower back regions.

"As a physical therapist, we can do a soft tissue massage or dry needling to help relieve the results of stress," Fox said.

She added that staying active during the pandemic, especially if it continues through the fall and winter months, is even more important during something like a stay at home order.

"Staying active with exercise of walking or biking effects breathing, circulation and keeping the heart healthy. It increases heart rate and the depth of respiratory rate. While all those things may not prevent getting something like COVID, it would make one healthier and might help fight the illness or make the recovery faster and easier. Strong heart, strong lungs and better mental health can help fight any disease," Fox said.

She offered some ways to stay active at home including a walking program either on a local trail or in one of the local parks or on a treadmill at home. She also suggested something even simpler like setting a timer and walking around ones home every day for a set amount of time. Fox also suggested doing daily general stretching at home or start doing yoga.

Stark County has many parks and walking trails throughout the area. Stark Parks has many options for people to get outside and get active.

"Keeping your body active and moving can be done with a variety of your own activities and experiences at Stark Parks," said Lisa Alderfer, educational programmer-recreation at Stark Parks. "From hiking, running, and biking trails to fishing and boating, to a Mindfulness Walk.

Alderfer added a list of other benefits such as increased energy, improved cardiovascular health and blood pressure, relieves insomnia, weight loss and control, and the ability to make spending time together with safe distancing possible.

Executive director of the Paul and Carol David YMCA in Jackson Township Bandon Bussey added that doing activities at the YMCA is a good way to stay active during all times of the year.

"The YMCA addresses three components including mental, spiritual and physical," said Bussey. "While in the pandemic, the stress of the uncertainty is unhealthy and coming to the YMCA for swimming, cycling or other activities can get people away from that stress for at least the length of the exercise."

He added that getting involved with a regular exercise routine can help release serotonins and trigger ones brain for positive thoughts.

"We have programs for all ages including low impact swimming, Silver Sneaker programming and we offer a personal trainer to evaluate and help develop programs for individuals," Bussey said.

He offered three things to keep in mind when starting an exercise program:

Set goals and understand what you want out of it and how to go about accomplishing those goals.

Just get started and get into a routine as quickly as possible.

Use the buddy system and find a friend to exercise with and to keep each other accountable.

The American Heart Association is gearing up for its annual heart walk in mid-October. While the event this year will be virtual, its still a great way to get involved with a good cause and to get moving. The event is used to promote staying healthy and keeping ones heart healthy. This list, now in its fifth year, is made up of prospects who have yet to make their major-league debut

ST. LOUIS With Dylan Carlsons overdue promotion to the major leagues last week, its time to re-rank the top prospects in the Cardinals organization.

It goes without saying that the 21-year-old Carlson is currently the best prospect in the organization but he is ineligible for this list because of his status as a major-leaguer. This list, now in its fifth year, is made up of prospects who have yet to make their major-league debut.

In addition to Carlson, five other players who were on last years list have been promoted to the major league since then and are no longer eligible Junior Fernandez (6th on last years list), Randy Arozarena (8th), Jake Woodford (11th), Genesis Cabrera (13th) and Kodi Whitley (17th).

Six players on this years list have joined the organization within the last year: one by trade (Matthew Liberatore), three through this years amateur draft (Jordan Walker, Masyn Winn and Tink Hence) and two as international free agent signings (Edwin Nunez and Jake Burns).

As with everything baseball-related in this year of COVID-19, it was harder to compile these rankings without any minor-league performances to evaluate and compare.

Nolan Gorman and Liberatore find themselves at the top of the list. The two, who grew up playing youth baseball together in Arizona, have been together again in Springfield this summer but not as members of the Double A team as they had envisioned in the spring but instead just working out in the Cardinals alternate site camp, which was filled with a number of the organizations top prospects.

Here is the STLSportsPage 2020 re-ranking of the top prospects in the organization:

1: Nolan Gorman. Last years ranking: 2

This season was supposed to be the breakout year for the left-handed hitting Gorman, just as was the case for Carlson last year at Springfield. Gorman has been following almost exactly on the same track as Carlson, just about a year behind, and at 20 years old, he also is the same age Carlson was last summer when he became the Texas League Player of the Year. Escaping the hitter-stifling Florida State League would have helped Gorman unleash his potential to become a solid middle of the order power bat and put him in line to challenge for a spot on the major-league roster as early as next summer. Like Carlson, the first-round pick in 2018 has a high baseball IQ and should make the necessary adjustments to be successful at the higher levels of the minors. Gormans defense at third base is still a work in progress and he will have to show that he can stick at the position as he keeps moving up in the system. Not being able to do more than just work out and play simulated games this year, however, probably will result in a short delay in Gormans projected path to the majors.

2: Matthew Liberatore. Last year: Not in the organization

liberatore inside 8-18As soon as the off-season trade with Tampa Bay was complete, the 20-year-old Liberatore immediately became the best pitching prospect in the Cardinals organization. The left-handed Liberatore was the Rays top pick in 2018 and was brought along slowly by Tampa Bay in his first two pro seasons, pitching in rookie ball and low Class A. He was poised to jump quickly through high A this summer on his way to Springfield, but like Gorman, his progress was slowed because of the cancellation of the minor-league season. That likely will result in Liberatore spending the 2021 season at Springfield but has not reduced the Cardinals excitement about his potential as a top-of-the rotation starter in the no-too-distant future. At 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, Liberatore has the perfect pitchers body and profiles as the most promising left-handed starter the Cardinals have brought along since Rick Ankiel 20 years ago.

3: Zack Thompson. Last years ranking 5

While its been a long time since the Cardinals had a left-handed starting prospect like Liberatore, its been even longer since they had two left-handers who project to both be in the rotation for years to come at some point in the next few years. The 22-year-old Thompson was their top selection in the 2019 draft from the University of Kentucky and because of his age and experience probably will reach the majors earlier than Liberatore. Thompson also has spent this summer at the alternate camp in Springfield after pitching well in spring training. He likely will join Liberatore in Springfields rotation in 2021 with a mid-season promotion to Memphis a strong possibility.

4. Masyn Winn. Last year: Not in the organization

The Cardinals second-round pick in this years draft out of a Texas high school, Winn has the potential to be either a shortstop, pitcher or both. He has always been a two-way player and the organization intends to allow him to try to do both, at least for the early portion of his professional career. The 18-year-old Winn was invited to be part of the Springfield summer camp, letting him get indoctrinated into pro baseball even though there was no minor-league season. He will begin next season in the low levels of the minors, but his exact destination could be determined by what happens to the structure of the minors, which could include the elimination of the Cardinals franchises in State College and Johnson City, where Winn most likely would have been assigned to begin the 2021 season.

5. Ivan Herrera. Last years ranking: 10

For the last few years fans have wondered, as have people inside the organization, who should be considered the heir apparent to Yadier Molina behind the plate once, or if, Molina retires. It was Carson Kelly for a while, then Andrew Knizner, but the answer might be Herrera. Now 20, Herrera has made steady progress through the organization since signing as a 16-year-old out of Panama. He split last season between Peoria and Palm Beach before finishing the year in the Arizona Fall League. He also was part of the Springfield camp this summer, and likely will be playing there next year. A career .309 hitter in the minors, Herreras bat is still ahead of his defense, but the Cardinals have been pleased with how hard he has worked to improve behind the plate.

Major-league ETA: September 2022

6. Jordan Walker. Last year: Not in the organization

The power-hitting Walker was the Cardinals top pick in this years draft and they were able to sign the 18-year-old away from a commitment to Duke. A third baseman, Walker is getting his first taste of pro baseball by working out this summer at the satellite camp in Springfield but wont be able to play his first professional games until next season. The right-handed hitting Walker, already 6-foot-5, could one day form a nice middle-of-the-order combination with Gorman, although one of them will have to move off third base. Walker also earns praise for his mental approach to the game, not surprising given his commitment to Duke. It will be interesting to see if the Cardinals are as aggressive with his team assignments next year as they were with Gorman, which would likely mean beginning the year at Peoria.

7. Johan Oviedo. Last years ranking: 9

The 22-year-old right-hander took a major step forward in the last year as he improved his physical conditioning by losing weight and reshaping his body. He will be set back slightly, as will most of the top prospects, by not getting to pitch in actual games this summer but the Cardinals still expect him to develop into a middle-of-the-rotation starter. An imposing figure on the mound because of his 6-foot-6 size and frame, Oviedo made it to Springfield last summer and likely would have split time between there and Memphis this season. He just needs to refine his pitches, develop more control and he will be ready for the major leagues.

Major-league ETA: September 2021

8. Trejyn Fletcher: Last years ranking: 3

Fletcher, selected in the second round out of a Maine high school in 2019, has taken a small step back in the rankings this year because his hit tool has yet to develop as the organization had hoped. He still obviously has time on his side at just 19 and the outfielder, who had been committed to Vanderbilt, likely will see improvement as he gets to play games and become comfortable with the pro game. Fletcher still profiles as a five-tool player and his speed in the outfield is a definite asset to his game. He probably will start next season in Peoria.

9. Edwin Nunez. Last year: Not in the organization

Nunez is probably one of the two most unknown players on this list as he was signed in June as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic. The 18-year-old right-hander throws his fastball in the mid 90s and has touched 100 and at 6-foot-3 he has the physical frame to get bigger and stronger. Nunez was considered one of the top pitching prospects to come out of the Dominican Republic this year. He has not been able to pitch this summer so more than likely he will begin his pro career next season in the rookie level Gulf Coast League.

10. Tink Hence. Last year: Not in the organization

The second of the Cardinals two picks in the second round of this years draft, Hence is one of the youngest player in the class; he didnt turn 18 until earlier this month. The right-handed pitcher was a summer ball teammate of Masyn Winn and like Winn was committed to play college baseball at Arkansas. Hence can throw four pitches for strikes, hits the mid 90s with his fastball and the Cardinals believe he will only get better as he starts working with professional coaches and gets bigger and stronger. Because of this lost season, Hence will more than likely begin next season in the Gulf Coast League but could earn a fairly quick promotion and begin his move up through the organization.

11. Elehuris Montero. Last years ranking: 4

It really wasnt through anything that Montero did wrong last year why he has dropped down several places in thie years rankings. It really reflects the fact that he suffered through an injury-filled 2019 season. The MVP of the Midwest League in 2018, Montero also is missing needed development time this summer because of the cancellation of the minor-league season. He likely will be back at Springfield to begin next season, but then he will be competing with Gorman for playing time at third base. The biggest challenge for Montero will be to prove that he can still produce offensively as he moves up in the system and faces more consistent quality pitching. If he does that, the Cardinals will find a place for him perhaps as a future DH, which almost certainly will be in the NL to stay starting in 2022.

Major-league ETA: September 2022

12. Malcom Nunez. Last years ranking: 7

The fourth third baseman on this list, the 19-year-old Nunez ranks between Montero and Walker in terms of age, development and experience. He spent most of last season at Johnson City but was overmatched offensively during a short stint at Peoria. He is one of the prospects who could be impacted by the expected loss of the State College franchise next season, which likely would have been his best destination. He was invited to the teams alternate site camp this summer but like the other young prospects will suffer from not playing competitive games. Nunez is going to have to prove that his weight will not become an issue, which could prompt a move off third base.

13. Jhon Torres. Last years ranking: 15

The 20-year-old Torres was one of the players the Cardinals acquired from the Indians in the 2018 deadline trade that sent Oscar Mercado to Cleveland. The young outfielder had a solid season at Johnson City last year but like Nunez, struggled when he was exposed to the higher level competition at Peoria during a brief stay. Torres likely will head back there again in 2021 and should enjoy more success with another year of development. The right-handed hitter has the size (6-foot-4) to grow into becoming a power hitter; he has 19 homers in his first 152 games in the minors.

14. Angel Rondon. Last years ranking: 16

A native of the Dominican Republic, the 22-year-old right-hander was named the minor league pitcher of the year for the Cardinals in 2019 when he won 11 games and posted a 2.93 ERA in 28 starts combined between Palm Beach and Springfield while also averaging a strikeout per inning. More than likely Rondon will start next season back at Springfield but could be in line for a mid-season promotion to Memphis.

15. Alvaro Seijas. Last year: Not ranked

Still only 21 years old, Seijas has been on and off these ranking lists since 2015 when he signed with the Cardinals out of his native Venezuela. The right-hander had a bounce-back season in 2019, posting a 2.81 ERA in 24 combined starts between Peoria and Palm Beach and earning a spot on the 40-man roster. He has been at the Springfield camp this summer, and should get back there at some point next season once games resume.

16. Jake Burns: Last year: Not in the organization

One of the youngest players in the organization, the 17-year-old Burns signed with the Cardinals as a free agent last September when he was just 16. The catcher is a native of Australia and impressed Cardinals scouts during various international tournaments. He is a bat-first catcher but also knows defense at his position has to be a big part of his game. Most likely Burns will begin his pro career next summer in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League.

17. Julio Rodriguez. Last years ranking: 12

The third catcher in the top 20 rankings, Rodriguez has been slightly ahead of Herrera in terms of assignment the last couple of years and the challenge for him going forward will be to see if that can continue. At 23 he is older than Herrera, probably isnt quite as good offensively, but might have an edge behind the plate. He probably should play in Springfield next year, but if Herrera is there too, the question will be how to divide the playing time to ensure both get the work they need.

18. Tony Locey. Last years ranking: 14

The third-round pick in the 2019 draft out of the University of Georgia, Locey had a solid debut pro season even though, as with almost all college pitchers, he pitched a very limited number of innings, 17, over 12 games. What stands out is that in 15 innings at Peoria he recorded 28 strikeouts. As a right-handed reliever, the 22-year-old Locey could come quick and it is not out of the question he could be in the Springfield bullpen sometime next season.

19. Franklin Soto. Last year: Not ranked

A 20-year-old shortstop out of the Dominican Republic, Soto was listed last season as the player to watch from the rookie level Gulf Coast League Cardinals. He was one of nine members of the first graduating class from the Cardinals academy in the Dominican Republic. He struggled offensively in his first pro season in the U.S., hitting .226, but as he grows and gets stronger the Cardinals are confident that part of his game will improve. As is the case with other prospects near his age and level of development, deciding where he should play next year will be challenging if the State College and Johnson City teams are eliminated.

20. Mateo Gil. Last year: Not ranked

The son of former major-leaguer Benji Gil was selected by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2018 draft. A TCU commit at the time, Gil spent his first full season at Johnson City last year and had a solid offensive season. The shortstop likely profiles best as a utility player at the major-league level with the ability to handle all of the infield positions. Now 20, he will likely be asked to make the jump to Peoria to begin next season.

Dropping off the list from last year were Griffin Roberts (14) and Logan Gragg (19).

James Blunt has admitted that he contracted scurvy after going on a meat-only diet out of principle to take a stand against his vegan friends.

The Youre Beautiful singer, 46, became a carnivore for two months - consuming nothing but chicken and mince - after finding himself surrounded by vegetarians.

Blunt was eventually diagnosed with scurvy, a disease brought on by a lack in vitamin C.

Scurvy is becoming a little more common in the UK but is still considered rare, according to Azmina Govindji,spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, who warns that cutting out any food group from your diet involves risks of lacking essential nutrients.

Often referred to as sailors disease, scurvy was historically most common in sailors who were unable to get a balanced diet.

Govindji explains that the best way to achieve a healthy diet is by including all food groups.

There's a place for animal and plant-based foods in a healthydiet, she said.

The Paleo Diet: Should Modern Humans Eat the Way Our Ancestors Did? – Discover Magazine

Can you prevent weight gain and 21st-century health problems by eating the way our ancestors did?

Thats the premise behind the paleo diet, which takes inspiration from the Paleolithic era that spanned between 2.6 million to 12,000 years ago predating the advent of farming and animal domestication.

Some followers of the paleo diet believe that humans are genetically adapted to eat a certain way one thats closer to how early humans ate. This view is rooted in the evolutionary discordance hypothesis, which states that human evolution stopped around 50,000 years ago. In other words, our Stone Age bodies are not suited for our modern diets of convenience and carbs, and this mismatch is making us fat and sick.

While eating like a caveman or cavewoman isnt easy, making the paleo leap is purported to result in a number of health benefits from weight loss, to clearer skin, to improved mood, to better sleep. But like many health and wellness fads, researchers say paleos health benefits are likely too good to be true.

Unfortunately, scientists havent found much evidence that backs up the health benefits of the paleo diet beyond weight loss. Other claims havent been studied at all. But what research has uncovered is that it might be unhealthy for some people to follow a paleo diet, particularly among those concerned with heart and kidney health.

But theres another mammoth in the room: Even paleolithic people didnt eat paleo. Plenty of anthropological research has found that the popular diets interpretations of how Paleolithic-era humans ate are pretty inaccurate.

"[With] ancient diets, people just ate the foods available to them. With the current globalized food system, we now have access to more types of food, which makes that approach more complicated," says Colleen Rauchut Tewksbury, a senior research investigator and bariatric program manager at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

According to Google Trends data, paleo was the most-searched diet in 2013. In recent years, diets like keto, intermittent fasting and the carnivore diet have kicked paleo out of the top rankings. But survey data from 2018 showed that roughly 3 million Americans were still following a version of the paleo diet.

It is also sometimes called the Paleolithic diet, Stone Age diet, hunter-gatherer diet or a caveman diet. Whole30, which is a 30-day regimen based on the paleo diet, has also become a popular way to supposedly reset the body after an indulgent holiday season.

But no matter what you call it, interest in adopting ancient diets isn't new. In the 1970s, an American gastroenterologist named Walter L. Voegtlin promoted a meat-centric Stone Age diet to achieve optimal health. Voegtlin is largely regarded as the pioneer of the modern paleo diet and was the first to write a book about it. But his ideas never gained widespread support, which perhaps is not a surprise considering some of Voegtlins extreme and unsavory views like encouraging the mass slaughter of dolphins and eugenics.

Since then, other purported health gurus helped to bring paleo out of the cave and into the mainstream. Primal eating feels at home in our current era of romanticizing health wisdom and habits of the past.

But before you keep sipping on bone broth, it might be a good idea to consider what real prehistoric people actually ate.

While people living in Paleolithic times would have painstakingly hunted and gathered their own food, modern-day followers of the diet can conveniently hop in their cars and zoom to the nearest grocery to find most paleo essentials on their shopping list. There, they can load up on all the meat, fish, eggs, fruits, non-starchy veggies and nuts they want. But dairy, legumes, grains, added sugars, alcohol, coffee and processed food should be avoided. Some versions of the paleo diet are stricter than others.

But a nuance the modern take on the diet doesn't take into account is that hunter-gatherers varied considerably in terms of the food they consumed. Different groups of early humans lived in vastly different climates and landscapes. People simply ate whatever was available to them, wherever that was.

Homo sapiens occupied every niche on the planet starting from [around] 100,000 years ago. We were highly adaptable, says Jennie Brand-Miller, a professor of nutrition at the University of Sydney. There were high-latitude hunter-gatherers who ate mostly animal foods and very little plant food and there was the opposite, [those who ate] a lot of plant-based food and only a little animal [protein].

Interestingly, there were no vegan hunter-gatherers, she says.

Meat-eating is often emphasized in anthropology simply because butchered animal bones are often better preserved and more likely to be discovered than evidence of plant-based meals. Based on whats been uncovered, early humans didnt appear to be terribly picky eaters. They probably ate insects. They didnt turn their nose up at elephant brains. They ate starchy tubers. They ate oats, processed by hand.

One things certain, though: Our ancestors most certainly did not eat bacon or chocolate. Those indulgences came on the food scene much later in history, yet are sometimes recommended in paleo diet literature. (But its pretty safe to say our paleo ancestors would have eaten bacon or chocolate, if given the chance.)

The idea that we should adopt a special diet because our genes are still stuck in the Stone Age isnt quite accurate.As cultures change through time, our genes change, too. Brand-Miller says there are a few genetic adaptations to modern diets that help illustrate this.

One of the best examples relates to milk and the prevalence of lactose intolerance. For most of our species history, the ability to digest milk after infancy didnt exist. Adults lacked lactase, the enzyme needed to break down lactose to simpler sugars that can be absorbed by the intestines. When people started domesticating cattle around 10,000 years ago, they started relying on dairy products as a food source. Over time, these groups evolved a genetic mutation for making lactase into adulthood. But because dairy wasnt a traditional part of diets everywhere, many descendants of these groups are missing this genetic mutation today.

People vary in their ability to process other foods as well, Brand-Miller says. People with genetic ties to regions that historically ate a high-starch diet tend to have more copies of the gene linked to higher production of salivary amylase an enzyme that breaks down carbs. That makes east Asians in particular more efficient at digesting starchy food. Likewise, Brand-Miller says fruit wasnt part of the traditional Arctic diet. So, its not surprising that a greater incidence of people with Inuit ancestry are deficient in sucrase, the enzyme that processes sucrose, a type of sugar.

But some people who dont have adequate levels of particular digestive enzymes can still consume small amounts of these foods without ill effects, Brand-Miller says. Aside from these differences, humans are generally well-adapted to eat almost anything put in front of them, which is perhaps one of the secrets to our species success.

People always have and probably always will eat a wide variety of foods depending on culture and what's available, says Melyssa Roy, a public health researcher at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

The health claims around the paleo diet are as controversial as the ancient menus themselves. Typically, the modern paleo diet is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Paleo often gets a bad rap for being so restrictive, and it doesnt allow consumption of foods like legumes, whole grains and dairy products.

Nutrition has a lot of gray area, and many diets such as these leave little room for flexibility or individualization, says Rauchut Tewksbury.

Because paleo hasnt been studied extensively, the long-term benefits and potential risks are poorly understood. But if weight loss is your primary reason for considering the paleo diet, theres some evidence it works.

For instance, Roy and her colleagues compared the weight loss results of 250 overweight individuals following one of three diets: intermittent fasting, Mediterranean and paleo. After 12 months, all groups lost weight but paleo came in last. Paleo dieters lost 4 pounds on average, compared with a 6-pound loss on the Mediterranean diet, and nearly 9 pounds with intermittent fasting. In general, participants found it easiest to stick to the Mediterranean diet, which is an important part of sustaining weight loss over time.

But if quick weight loss is your goal the paleo diet has its merits.

"In the short term, lower carbohydrate paleo diets are associated with higher satiety and faster weight loss, Brand-Miller says.

A two-year randomized and controlled study followed 70 postmenopausal Swedish women who were obese. Some participants were assigned to a paleo diet that included lean meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, berries and nuts. Other participants were assigned to a diet in line with the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR), the joint dietary recommendations for northern European countries. The NNR incorporates less protein and fat, but more carbohydrates than the paleo diet.

Six months in, the paleo group lost more weight than those following the NNR. Paleo dieters lost 13 pounds on average compared with 5 pounds with NNR. But after 24 months, the difference in weight loss between the two diets was less pronounced. Both groups showed similar improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol. Interestingly, participants' triglyceride levels decreased more on the paleo diet. High levels of triglycerides a type of fat found in the blood have been linked to heart disease.

But that doesnt necessarily mean that the paleo diet is heart-healthy. Brand-Miller says several studies have linked low-carb diets to higher rates of death, especially from heart disease. To add to that, she says mouse studies have suggested high-carbohydrate diets increase longevity. Perhaps the reason is rooted in our microbiomes.

A study compared the bloodwork of 44 paleo dieters with 47 people following a diet based on Australian national health recommendations. Among paleo dieters, researchers found elevated levels of a compound called trimethylamine N-oxide, which is associated with heart problems. In their work, the researchers explained that high levels of this compound might be due to a lack of whole grains in the paleo diet. Bacteria in the gut produces trimethylamine N-oxide while digesting meat. But consuming whole grains increases production of beneficial gut bacteria, which seems to counter the harmful compound.

Saturated fat might be another thing to worry about on the paleo diet. Dietary fats, in general, arent demonized today like they were in the '90s. But saturated fat isnt totally in the clear. Decades of research have linked the consumption of saturated fats to elevated levels of LDL cholesterol levels (the bad kind), which has been shown to increase the risk for heart disease.

The evidence is conflicting about whether high amounts of saturated fat are harmful in the context of this kind of diet. For some people, it may be better to avoid high amounts of animal fats, especially if they're still consuming a more standard diet. A strict paleo diet eliminates dairy, and there may be concerns around calcium intake, too, Roy says.

Diets that are high in protein have also been linked to kidney problems. Whether this applies to people with normally functioning kidneys hasn't been settled. Filtering excess protein from the blood can put additional stress on the organs, further decreasing their function among people with kidney problems.

But the idea that paleo must incorporate copious amounts of meat might be a bit of a misnomer to begin with.

[Paleo] is more about eating foods in their natural state, Roy says.

Brand-Miller says there are healthier approaches to paleo. For instance, incorporating plenty of fruits and vegetables even those that are packed with carbs. Plant-based foods can add nutrients, fiber, flavor and variety to diets.And, they'll help you live longer, too.

If the paleo diet gets anything right, it's the stance against processed food. Highly refined ultraprocessed foods now account for more than half of all calories consumed and 90 percent of added sugar intake in the U.S. which increases the risk of weight gain and several health conditions. But it's not a matter or paleo or bust.

Ultimately, the best way to eat for your health is the change you can keep up with. Most people know what they need to do: Limit calories, eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. The challenge is how to do it, says Rauchut Tewksbury. There are lots of ways people can achieve this. The key is figuring out which is best for you as an individual that you can keep up with.

Having a workout and diet regimen that is sustainable and easy-to-do is key to ensure follow-through, and Kareena Kapoor Khan knows that well. The actor, and now second-time expecting mom has been working with nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar for years, and the two often work together to tweak Kapoor Khan's routine in accordance to her needs. What's not on the menu? A strict diet that is too hard to maintain. Im a Kapoorwe love our foodand I cant diet," she shared in 2018.

Earlier this week, Rujuta Diwekar shared the food schedule that Kapoor Khan was following while working on for her latest at-home Filmfare cover, with a snapshot of the shoot. The star was already expecting at this time, and the menu in Diwekar's in-depth caption revealed a glimpse at her pregnancy diet. When Kapoor Khan was in her first trimester back in May and June 2020, Diwekar made sure to include carbs, fats and proteins in a balanced manner to her diet, so that Kapoor Khan was satiated throughout. Her first meal was soaked almonds or bananas for some quick energy, after which she completed a workout. Grains like rice and wheat are an important component of one's diet, particularly while pregnant. Lunch and dinner included rice-based dishes and yoghurt (with papad too!) or a roti with a vegetable or sabzi like paneer.

Before bedtime, Kapoor Khan drank turmeric milk with nutmeg, an immune-boosting and sleep-inducing drink, as well. Since having snack options for in-between important is important to prevent binge-eating something else, Diwekar also shared her picks for those: fresh fruit, yoghurt with nuts, coconut water, lemon sherbet or buttermilk with black pepper and asafoetida.

While pregnancy diets differ from person to person (which means this exact diet may not always work for you!), Kareena Kapoor Khan's pre-baby food routine so far has been quite easy-to-follow. Even back in 2015, before she was pregnant with her son Taimur, the actor was on the healthy food train. I eat a lot of green leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach and fenugreek, and I dont believe in cutting down the carbs in my diet. I try to eat something healthy every two to three hours. My breakfast usually comprises upma or paranthas (without oil), muesli or idlis. For lunch, its the usual roti, or brown rice, with dal and vegetables. At night I like to keep it light with a soup and some stir-fried veggies. I make sure to include lots of salads and fresh fruits in my diet, she confirmed.

But before that, Kapoor Khan has also been honest about the mistakes she's made while dieting in her 20s. On a radio interview, she once shared, I did a lot of foolish things in the past without knowing the repercussions.Mentally, I used to feel low and down and irritable. When I first started my journey to fitness, main ek galti hamesha karti thi. Basically I used to constantly try these water diets, or I would constantly try and change my diets every two days, she said, sharing that she would often skip rice and roti in the effort to stop eating carbs.

Mixing up a workout routine can keep you from getting bored and keeps the body balanced. According to Rujuta Diwekar's Instagram post, Kareena Kapoor Khan included both sprints and endurance-building runs on the treadmill, yoga, a strength training workout, and a core workout with rest days interspersed in between during the first three months of her pregnancy. Switching between high intensity and low intensity exercises can help the body heal and build in the most efficient and sustainable manner. Allowing for break days is important toomuscles can heal and regenerate during those periods.
