Water and Weight Loss – How Much to Drink for Losing Weight – menshealth.com

Posted: August 17, 2020 at 4:01 pm

Water is great for you. Proper hydration helps your brain stay alert, your cells function at top rate, and your exercise performance on key.

There's another benefit to water, too, and it pertains to weight loss. That said, some so-called experts make it seem like H20 is an instant fat burner. Except that's not really true. It's a little more complex than that.

Subscribe to Men's Health

There's some truth behind the claim that water can help you lose weight. Oftentimes water is pushed to those seeking weight loss because there is a belief that water can fill you up leading to eating less often or less volume come meal time, says Kelly Jones, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN.

So because youre filling up on water, youll be less likely to snack and can better control hunger. Plus, as the theory goes, when you are hydrated and eating foods that have high water content, you are more likely to have better hydration overall throughout the day to help manage weight.

Poor hydration can mean that your body continues to seek out fluid through the foods you are eating though, which is why sometimes people feel as if they may eat less when they have water before or at a meal, Jones says.

So, rather than trying to use water to mask your hunger, sip water regularly throughout the day in an attempt to prevent feelings of thirst (a sign you're already dehydrated) and then you may have a more regular appetite regulation throughout the day.

Along with well balanced meals and snacks, adequate hydration may help you better listen to your hunger and fullness cues, helping your body reach the weight it is meant to be over time, she says. Still though, beyond weight management, can it help you drop weight when youre looking to slim down?

It can help in the short-term but not so much long-term. While volume of food and liquids puts pressure on the nerve cells in your digestive tract, sending some signals to your brain that you may be full, it doesn't last for very long, Jones says.

Without intake of protein, fat, and fiber, proper satiety signals will not be released and if it doesn't catch up to you very soon after once the water has left your stomach, it often will later in the day, leading to extreme hunger and potentially ease in overeating, she adds.

On top of your baseline needs, it's recommended to drink an additional 16 to 24 ounces of fluid starting around 3 hours before exercise, up to 1 liter an hour during exercise and between 13 to 27 ounces per hour depending on conditions of your workout, says Jones.

Afterwards, you should replace whatever you lost during your workout. By weighing yourself before and after your training session, you can calculate this need. For every pound lost while moving, drink an additional 16 to 20 ounces on top of your baseline needs. Thirst is not a good indicator of hydration status and fluid needs, Jones says.

It is possible. You drink more water than your kidneys can remove in your urine. This can cause too much water to collect in your bloodstream and an imbalance of fluids, says Maggie Michalczyk, MS, RD.

While more risky for women than men, men can still over-do it with water, which can be life threatening.

Excessive fluid intake occurs when the body has so much fluid that minerals such as sodium are diluted in the blood, leading to fluid imbalances in and out of cells, Jones says.

Known as hyponatremia, or low blood sodium, creates symptoms from nausea and fatigue to brain damage and death, she says.

This is isnt something to worry too much aboutbut it is a risk associated with excess water intake.

Water weight is when the body retains fluids that would normally get filtered by the kidneys. It's usually temporary and doesn't mean that you've gained weight, however can be discouraging for someone trying to lose weight, says Michalczyk.

It might happen for a few reasons. An increase in salt in the diet, and sitting for long periods of time (like on a long flight) can all be reasons why people gain water weight, Michalczyk says.

Yet, you can help manage it. Avoiding salty foods (like processed foods that usually contain a lot of salt), drinking enough water and exercising are all ways to prevent water weight and get it to go away, Michalczyk says.

Carbs can also have an impact on fluid retention, because glycogen (storage form of carbohydrates) pulls in water. This explains why people on a crash diet with very little carbs lose weight right away but then tend to gain right back when they resume their normal, Michalczyk says. It's water weight that is being lost from the stored glycogen in our musclesjust another reason why slow, sustained weight loss is the way to go.

The takeaway? Overall, water can help you lose weight as a healthy lifestyle habit where you may control appetite better and go for less sugary drinks to quench your thirst, but pure water alone wont really tip the scale for long-term changes.

New Onset Diabetes and Weight Loss Associated with Pancreatic Cancer Risk – DocWire News

Posted: August 17, 2020 at 4:01 pm

A new study observed a correlation between newly diagnosed diabetes and recent weight loss and an increased likelihood of pancreatic cancer.

Despite pancreatic cancers status as the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, there is a scarcity of research on high-risk groups; such data could help would be helpful in achieving early diagnoses, according to the authors of the present study.

The researchers identified data from the Nurses Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study; repeated exposure assessments were performed over 30 years. Pancreatic cancer cases were either self-reported or discovered during follow-up of participant deaths, which were determined through next of kin reports, the US postal service, or the National Death Index. Exposures were the duration of diagnosed diabetes and recent weight change; the main outcome was the hazard ratio (HR) of developing pancreatic cancer.

Final analysis included 112,818 women (mean age, 59.4 years) and 46,207 men (mean age, 64.7 years); 1,116 total pancreatic cancer incidents were identified. When adjusting for age, patients with recent-onset diabetes, compared to nondiabetic patients, were more likely to have pancreatic cancer (HR=2.97; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.31 to 3.82), as were long-standing diabetics (HR=2.16; 95% CI, 1.78 to 2.60). Compared to patients who did not lose weight, in age-adjusted analyses, the risk of pancreatic cancer was greater among patients with a weight loss of 1 to 4 pounds (HR=1.25; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.52), 5 to 8 pounds (HR=1.33; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.66), and more than 8 pounds (HR=1.92; 95% CI, 1.58 to 2.32). Pancreatic cancer risk was significantly higher among recent-onset diabetes patients reporting a weight loss between 1 and 8 pounds (91 incident cases per 100,000 person years; 95% CI, 55 to 151; HR=3.61; 95% CI, 2.14 to 6.10) or more than 8 pounds (164 incident cases per 100,000 person-years; 95% CI, 114 to 238; HR=6.75; 95% CI, 4.55 to 10.00) compared to non-diabetic patients with no recent weight loss (16 cases per 100,000 person-years; 95% CI, 14 to 17). Pancreatic cancer incidence was greatest among recent-onset diabetes patients with weight loss whose body mass index was <25 kg/m2 before weight loss (400 incident cases per 100,000 person-years) or whose weight loss was unintentional based on increased physical activity or healthier dietary choices (334 incident cases per 100,000 person-years).

The study was published in JAMA Oncology.

This study demonstrates that recent-onset diabetes accompanied by weight loss is associated with a substantially increased risk for developing pancreatic cancer. Older age, previous healthy weight, and no intentional weight loss further elevate this risk, the authors concluded.

Man began 220-pound weight loss journey by only eating 1 type of unseasoned vegetable – FOX 35 Orlando

Posted: August 17, 2020 at 4:01 pm

TENNESSEE - He's no couch potato.

A Tennessee man changed his life and lost 220 pounds in an incredible weight loss journey that began with a two-week diet of unseasoned potatoes and eventually led to a love for fitness.

Dylan Wall weighed 425 pounds when he graduated high school in 2017, South West News Service (SWNS) reports. The Dickson County man decided to make a lifestyle change when he visited Austin Peay State University for New Student Day and realized he couldnt keep up.

During a tour of my college, I lost my group because I couldnt keep up, Wall explained. I knew I wouldnt be able to make it to my classes on time if I stayed on that course.

MORE NEWS:Tracking Coronavirus: Almost 570,000 cases and 9,350 deaths reported by Florida health officials

Around the same time, my sister also gave birth to my nephew, he continued. I didnt want to set that example for him.

Before slimming down, Wall ate mostly fast food, processed carbs and meat. For breakfast, hed pick up McDonalds, ordering more fast fare than a normal portion, he said. For lunch, Wall would get a double portion of whatever was being served. Dinner, meanwhile, was less consistent, Wall said, as he would snack on and off until he went to bed which usually meant having two or three sandwiches.

MORE NEWS:Protesters gather in DeLand calling for end of face mask ordinance

Other than when I left to go to school, I didn't really leave the house all that much, he recalled. It was pretty much like that until the day I graduated high school.

To begin the transformation, Wall yearned to break his flavor addiction."

I started by doing a taste bud cleanse. I ate only potatoes with no seasoning for two weeks, he said. It really helped with my cravings.

After that, he cut out all dairy and red meat and doubled down on monitoring his daily diet.

For the most part, I just counted my calories, Wall said. I wanted to break my flavor addiction and didnt want to eat for pleasure.

From there, Wall began eating egg whites with two slices of toast for breakfast, a turkey sub with no cheese for lunch, and a chicken breast with a variety of vegetables and rice for dinner.

It took just under a year to lose 180 pounds, he remembered. I didnt step into the gym until I lost that first bit of weight.

When the time felt right, Wall began exercising with cardio, in an endeavor that felt like the bane of my existence. With practice, he picked up the pace. Eventually, he could consistently run a 7:30-minute mile, and also began to embrace upper body workouts, squats and deadlifts.

Wall said that he wanted to bulk up right away with muscle mass, after being left with extra skin after the dramatic weight loss.

The last 50 pounds came off a little bit slower. It took another year to get down that last 50 pounds, he said.

Looking ahead, the fitness fanatic now plans to have surgery to have his excess skin removed.

I dont think I knew how mentally taxing being left with the skin would be, he revealed. After coming this far and losing so much, Im still left with that reminder every day.

Now, Wall hopes that his own fitness journey will motivate others to strive for their best selves.

I met my current girlfriend 50 pounds into my weight loss. Since we got together shes lost 75 pounds," he said. My dad also bet me $100 to see who could lose 60 pounds the fastest. I won, but he lost the 60 pounds too.

Unexpected weight loss warrants investigation for cancer in male ever smokers – 2 Minute Medicine

Posted: August 17, 2020 at 4:01 pm

1. Unexpected weight loss, in male ever smokers aged 50 and older, meets the 3% predictive value for warranting a cancer investigation.

Evidence Rating Level: 2 (Good)

Unexpected weight loss (UWL) is reported in 1.5% of adults seeing a primary healthcare provider. Past studies have found associations between UWL and early or late stage cancers, including lymphoma, pancreatic, and cancers of unknown primary. Furthermore, compared to individuals with no UWL, men are three times as likely and women twice as likely to be diagnosed with cancer within three months of UWL. However, due to a lack of clinical guidelines in the UK, physicians have responded in vastly different ways when a patient presents with UWL, from taking no action at all to ordering extensive investigations to detect cancer. The purpose of this diagnostic accuracy study was to determine a predictive value of UWL for cancer, when taking into account patients sex, smoking status, and symptoms. According to the national health institute in the UK, a positive predictive value (PPV) of 3% would be indicative of requiring further investigations for cancer. The study analyzed the records of 63,973 patients from a national database in the UK. These patients had all presented with UWL sometime between 2000 and 2012. The PPV for a cancer diagnosis within six months of UWL was higher for older patients and ever smokers. Upon breakdown by sex, PPV was higher in male patients. Specifically, male ever smokers aged 50+ with UWL met the 3% threshold (PPV=3.06, 95% CI 2.62 to 3.55), whereas males aged 60+ with no other symptoms besides UWL also met the threshold (PPV=3.00, 95% CI 2.70 to 3.33). Furthermore, the PPV of UWL is greater than 3% when patients have concurrent symptoms, including abdominal pain, appetite loss, abdominal mass, jaundice, low albumin levels, and raised white cell counts. This studys findings have implications for guiding physicians on when UWL may be sufficient to warrant an investigation for cancer.

Best supplements for weight loss: The popular supplement form proven to lose belly fat – Express

Posted: August 17, 2020 at 4:01 pm

Summer holidaysfor many have looked very different this year, but people's desire to lose weight has remained. When looking to lose weight, all the old mantras holdtrue, and eating less and moving more will often prevail. There is a supplement one can take to make the journey slightly easier, according toexperts. Takinggreen tea extract could help you to lose weight. How?

In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, green tea and thermogenesis was investigated.

The study noted: The thermogenic effect of tea is generally attributed to its caffeine content.

We report here that a green tea extract stimulates brown adipose tissue thermogenesis to an extent which is much greater than can be attributed to its caffeine content.

The study concluded that green tea extract, via its catechin-polyphenols and caffeine, is effective in stimulating thermogenesis which reduces the risk of obesity.

DON'T MISS

In another study, the efficacy of green tea extract in increasing 24-hour energy expenditure in men was analysed.

The study said: We investigated whether a green tea extract, by virtue of its high content of caffeine and catechin polyphenols, could increase 24-h energy expenditure (EE) and fat oxidation in humans.

Relative to placebo, treatment with the green tea extract resulted in a significant increase in 24-h EE and a significant decrease in 24-h RQ without any change in urinary nitrogen.

The study concluded that green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by its caffeine content per se and may play a role in the control of body composition via sympathetic activation of thermogenesis, fat oxidation, or both.

Green tea extract is rich in catechins, and it contains a decent amount of caffeine.

Interestingly, it seems that this combination of ingredients is responsible for its weight loss properties.

Both catechins and caffeine have been shown to assist in weight loss by regulating the hormones that can enhance thermogenesis.

Thermogenesis is the process by which your body burns calories to digest food and produce heat.

Green tea has been shown to boost this process by making your body more effective at burning calories, which can lead to weight loss.
