What We Can Learn from The Scarsdale Diet: 10 Secrets to Success – The Beet

Posted: August 11, 2020 at 3:45 pm

Long before there was ketoor Paleo, South Beach or Sirtfood, there was a diet by a cardiologist named Dr. Herman Tarnower, who told his patients in Scarsdale, NY that the number one thing they should do to get healthyand avoid a heart attackwas to lose weight. He would tell them forcefully: "You must take off that unhealthy fat and flab. Go on a good reducing diet immediately." Most doctors didn't give patients diets in those days, but he did. His diet, typed out and copied on pieces of paper and shared by his patients, their tennis partners, and anyone who wanted to slim down, became a cult classic, as people lost up to 20 pounds in 14 days on the mostly plant-based plan.

The diet was high in protein, low in carbs, kept calories to a strict 1,000a day, and people who followed itfrom the half grapefruit every morning to the no alcohol every nightlostpounds fast.Testimonials famously touted sentiments like: "I've been able to stay at my teenage weight since doing the Scarsdale Diet." It took off among menand women whowanted to "stay trim" for health and wellbeing, and look and feel their best. Many of the diet's principles, such as eatas muchsalad as you likeand avoid oils, are still relevant today.

One caveat: The Beet does not recommend such a low calorie intake, and we believe losing a maximum of 2 pounds a week is healthier for long term results.

The first and most famous aspect: You eat half a grapefruit for breakfast every day, with a slice of protein bread (recipe below) and black coffee or tea. Even if you don't eat plant-based, the specifics of the diet are can fit nicely into your life now (other than the calorie count, which most RDs and doctors would agree is too little to sustaina healthy active lifestyle today).

When it waspublished in 1978,The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet, becamea runaway hit, staying at the top of the bestseller list for months, and gaining a newmorbidboost of notoriety whenDr. Tarnower was shot and killed by his jilted long-time girlfriend, Jean Harris, just two years after the book was published. The infamous crime of passion stayed onthe front pages for months, and years, as the public followed the high-profile case with ghoulish fascination since bothHarris (the headmistress of the Madeira School for girls) and Tarnowerwere well-known.

While other diets have eclipsedThe Scarsdale Diet, many of the principles Tarnower included in his book are still effective and sound science. It teaches people to do several thingsthat are similar in approach to The Beet'sThe VegStart Diet, created by an R.D., Nicole Osinga, who encourages eatinga plant-basedapproach, full of fiber and vegetables, healthy grains and filling whole foods, for healthy weight loss. There are other parallels between Scarsdale and the VegStart Diet, such as The Scarsdale Diet instructs: Eat specific foodsfor 14 days at a time; preparemeals without oil or butter or other unhealthy fat; eat as many salads or steamed vegetables as you like;eat your salads undressed (other than lemon juice), and snack between meals only on vegetables like celery and carrots (The VegStart DIet offers a plethora of healthy snacks including celery and nut butter).

Scarsdalerequired that dieters stay away from alcoholand encouraged them to onlyremain on the diet for 14 days at a time, then take two weeks to maintain on a "keep-slim" plan. The biggest difference is Scarsdale tells dieters to keep calories at 1,000 while The VegStart is closer to 1,500, which is both more sustainable and healthier for long-term weight loss since you lose weight and keep your energy up and your muscle mass intact.

But rereadingThe Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet book, the basic principles of eating to lose weight on a mostly vegetable- and fruit-laden plan made me realize that the Scarsdale Diet has much to teach us still, all these years later. Here iswhat The Scarsdale Dietespouses, and how to tailor it for a plant-based life, while losing weight healthily.

Anote of why I paid attention to the Scarsdale Diet in the first place: Growing up, Hy Tarnower (as his friends called him), was a presence in my life. He was my grandfather's best friend and when I would visit my grandparents in Westchester on weekends and see them playing cards together, drinking scotch, and enjoying an afternoon of competitivegin rummy and easy banter, I wondered at how these two men could say so little andchuckle so much, for hours. Their competitive games were low stakes but endowed serious bragging rights, and what I learned later, long after Hy's death, was that this kind of unique, brilliant individual is not easily replaced. My grandfather spent yearsmissing his best friend and it made sense to me that this man, with the deep sonorous voice, elegant presence, bald head, and dark eyes (he looked like a great hawk to me) and tall, athletic physique, was a towering figure inlife and in work. He also scared the living crap out of me.

Re-readingThe Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet, which was published the year I graduated from high school, made it clear that this is an unforgiving diet, of tough love and strict rules. The VegStart Diet is much more forgiving, embracing, doable and forgiving, and allows the dieters to eat healthy, plant-based meals, and still lose weight, but more gently and not at the same clip. But in both diets, you learn to eat to stay slim for life. Now I look back at Dr. Tarnower and think:How smart he was that he could help people change their diets to change their bodies and completely reverse their health fate, and ultimately change their lives giving them a sense of control over their weight and their wellbeing, in as little as 14 days.

Here is what his diet taught the world about weight loss and the tenets that still hold true today. One editorial note: the Scarsdale Diet is not plant-based, but it's easy to adopt it, if you want to, by switching burgers for veggie burgers and cheese for vegan cheese. Most of the food in theScarsdale Dietinvolves eating fruitlike half a grapefruit and protein bread for breakfastand vegetables, like a steamed vegetable medley for dinner. Or just do The VegStart Diet, which is both plant-based and effective. You may not lose a pound a day but you can keep off what you lose, and keep going.

So here are your secrets to success. For a full 14 day plant-based plan that's up-to-date and equally effective, try The VegStart Diet, which will help you lose weight and get healthier in just two weeks.

1. Eat exactly what is assigned. Don't substitute. This is true of both the Scarsdale Diet and the VegStart Diet, although in the Q and A section of the book he explains that you can eat more salads and vegetables if you wish.

2. Don't drink any alcoholic beverages. On VegStart dieters are allowed to have cheat days but not go crazy. Keep it in check.

3. Between meals, you eat only carrots and celery, but you may have as much as you wish. The VegStart Diet gives youseven different snacks to eat on repeat. One of them is celery and nut butter but there are several other more interesting snacks to choose from.

4. The only beverages allowed are regular or decaffeinated coffee, black; tea; club soda (with lemon if desired); and diet sodas.... You may drink them as often as you wish. Back in the day, we didn't realize diet sodas can drive a sweet tooth or fool the body into thinking "sweets are here!" and possibly make your system hold onto fat. While these studies are still inconclusive,The Beet believes that hydrating with water orwater with lemon if you want a tasty sip. Also if you want to add a non-dairy creamer or milk to your coffee there are now so many great plant-based selections, which were not even conceived of in 1978. Just choose one low in fat and carbs or sugar.

5. Prepare all salads without oil, mayonnaise or other rich dressings. Use only lemon and vinegar, or the vinaigrette or mustard dressing [in the book].The Beet recommends a low-oil approach to dressing, but you can of course enjoy some salad dressing if you keep it lightly dressed and not drenched in oil. Here is one we likethat includes a blueberry flavor to mix it up.

6. Eat vegetables without butter, margarine, or other fat; lemon may be used. The same principle as above: The calories in oil add up. Chef AJ, who wecover for her approach to plant-based healthy weight loss, tells her followers to use zero oil. We believe that a little avocado oil or a touch of olive oil can be used but keep it to a minimum, especially if the goal is to reverse heart disease since oils can add to cholesterol and plaque buildup in the arteries and create dangerous blockages over time. The safest bet: Lemon juice. for the many benefits of lemon, from its immune-boosting vitamin C to its digestive health help, read The Beet's runaway hit story on why you should drink lemon water in the morning. Or just add lemon juice to your veggies all day long.

7. All meat should be very lean; remove all visible fat before eating... He was onto something. Fat, from any animal, be it beef, pork, chicken, or poultry, is bad for you and increases the risk of heart disease, cancer and premature death. We now know from studies that have been published on diet habits, that the best bet is to eat NO animal products of any kind or to at least eat as many plant-foods as you can, so long as they are whole foods and the least processed you can find. (Half a grapefruit for breakfast is a perfect example.)

8. It is not necessary to eat everything listed, but don't substitute or add. Indicated combinations should be observed.Food combinations are important for a balanced diet since the amount of protein, fat and carbs you take in effect the mix of fuel and how your body burns it. The higher the carbs the more spikes in insulin, your body gets the message to store fat. The higher the protein, your body rebuilds healthy lean muscle and burns fat for fuel (in the absense of enough carbs and blood sugar to keep going). So while you may not agree with the percentages here, the point is to pay attention to your mix. The VegStart Diet followsmacros that are approximately 20 percent protein, 40 percent fat and 40 percent carbs.

Note: According to Tarnower: "The average person's food intake contains approzimately 10 to 15 percwent protein, 40 to 45 percent fat and 40 to 50 percent carbohydrates." He explains that a health diet can make "wide variations in these perfentages" but that the by doubling the protein (to 43 percent) and cutting the fat in half (to 22.5 percent) and keeping carbs to no more than 34.5 percent, you change the mix of fuel and force your body to burn more fat, the same way keto diets do but with a less extreme carb restriction.

9. Never overload your stomach. When you feel full, STOP. This is now called mindful eating, and The VegStart Diet espouses this. Turn off screens, pay attention to your food, and enjoy eating as a way to fuel up, not because you're bored, stresed and distracted. Nicole Osinga and The VegStart Diet offers 15 tips to succeed at weight loss and this is one of the most important. Eat, then stop, and go do something else like take a walk for diversion.

10. Dont' stay on the diet for moroe than 14 days. Diets are only as good as your ability to stay on them. Endless restrictions lead to cheating and gaining, and then you tell yourself diets don't work. Essentially the best diets teach you how to prepare food the healthy way so you can learn how to be healthier for life. The VegStart Diet does this, with minimal food prep in advance that allows you to reach for healthy choices when you're hungry, by making a few snacks and easy meals in advance.

The other aspect of Scarsdale that is relevant is checking your weight regularly. If you gain 4 or more pounds you go back on it for 2 weeks, to get the unwanted pounds off. We highly recommend that as well: Do the VegStart Diet. See how well you lost weight, then stay on track with the good habits you've learned. If you need to lose some weight, go back on the VegStart Diet for two weeks. You'll be surprised at how easily the weight comes off.

Dr. Tarnower included his recipe for Home-Baked Protein Bread:

Ingredients

Instructions

Pour water into the mixing bowl. Sprinkle dry yeast on water and let stand until it dissolves (about 4 minutes). Mix in salt, sugar, cider vinegar. Sift thoroughly then gradually add soy and gluten flours, then whole wheat flour.

Mix slowly until dough stiffens and does not stick to sides of bowl *you may use a food processor, following machine instructions for this step). Lightly flour a board, then roll out the dough on it. Knead well (about 5 minutes) until dough feels smooth and elastic. Coat bread pan with no-stick vegetable spray. Shape the dough to fit, set it into the pan, cover with a dish towel, and set in a warm place to rise to about the top fo the bread pan (2 to 3 hours). Preheat oven to 325. Bake bread for about 1 hour or until well browned. Home-baked bread is dense than commercial so cut thin slices, then toast. Keep in refrigerator.

After having a baby, many women wonder how long it takes to lose baby weight and bounce back to a pre-baby body.

There are lots of things you can do to get into shape again. But its really important to give yourself a break: Your body just birthed another being. Things moved around, stretched and grew to make that happen. Dont focus on getting your body back (it actually didnt go anywhere!) but on creating a healthy, happy, and possibly slightly differently shaped you, writes Maria Masters in her article Losing the Baby Weight: The Truth About Shedding Pounds After Birth.

Francis Kazungu, a general practitioner in Kigali, says the most important aspect is maintaining a healthy diet. In fact, this should be before, during, and after the pregnancy.

He says that in many cases, this has been an issue for women after giving birth.

For many women, maintaining healthy weight after pregnancy is a struggle, he says.

He explains that after giving birth, many women tend to concentrate on taking care of their new-borns, adjusting to the new routine and recovering from childbirth.

However, Kazungu says it is important to return to a healthy weight after delivery, whether you plan to have another baby or not.

How to go about it

Joseph Uwiragiye, the head of the nutrition department at University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK), says while the weight one loses after giving birth varies, the most important thing is to remain within a healthy weight range.

Studies show that many women appear to hold on to at least a couple of pounds postpartum, and a quarter of women retain 11 or more pounds (roughly five or more kilogrammes) a year after giving birth.

One thing that can help shed off some weight, Uwiragiye says, is exclusively breastfeeding, which is important for the mother and the child.

He says that studies have proven that breastfeeding helps reduce the size of the uterus, as it makes it contract and return to its normal size faster after birth.

Additionally, breastfeeding has been shown to support the mothers weight loss.

Uwiragiye says this is because the body uses fat stores and energy to nourish the baby.

He says women who breastfed their babies for at least the first few months tend to lose the weight they gained during pregnancy faster than those who dont.

However, he notes that women should mind what they eat as breastfeeding can make one hungry often.

He suggests eating vegetables and fruits and other nutritious choices.

Uwiragiye adds that drinking plenty of water and staying away from processed foods that are high in fat or sugar is essential as far as losing baby weight is concerned.

Benefits

Kazungu says that reaching a healthy weight after a pregnancy reduces ones risks in future pregnancies, and boosts general health.

By eating well and exercising gradually, one is capable of losing weight in a short period of time. The most important thing is to take care of yourself, eat good food and exercise, he says.

He adds that depending on ones commitment and determination, it might take six months or more for one to get back to their pre-pregnancy weight.

Meanwhile, Uwiragiye says that gradual weight loss, about half a kilo per week, is enough, especially if one is breastfeeding.

He points out that one should be careful when trying to lose weight while breastfeeding.

He explains that losing weight rapidly through dieting might mean that one isnt passing on the nutrients required to the baby, which is risky.

Its not ideal to lose a lot of weight or lose it too quickly. One needs the energy to care for themselves and the baby, Uwiragiye adds.

Eat to lose weight

To be able to lose the weight gradually, Erick Musengimana, a nutritionist at Rwanda Diabetes Association in Kigali, says there are healthy eating tips that mothers should follow.

First and foremost, he says, do not try to skip meals, adding that with the new baby, one can forget to eat at some point.

This, he says, will lead to less energy, which will not aid weight loss.

He adds that one should aim at eating five to six small meals a day with healthy snacks in between (rather than three larger meals).

According to studies by MedlinePlus, an online health information resource, its important not to skip breakfast.

It states that even if one does not normally eat in the mornings, they should get into the habit of doing so. It will give them the energy to start the day and not feel tired later.

The study suggests that when you take your time eating, you will notice that it is easy to tell that you are full. It is tempting to multitask, but if you focus on your meal, it is unlikely to overeat.

Musengimana says that eating a variety of fresh foods, including vegetables, proteins and whole grains is important.

He adds that trying to incorporate food that is rich in fibre, such as vegetables, legumes, and grains, not only fills you up, it is good for your health.

He says its important to always eat smaller portions. He notes that this can be achieved by using a smaller plate.

He notes that choosing healthy options rather than processed snacks helps when it comes to shedding off extra weight.

Musengimana counsels that its important for one to consult a dietitian who can give tips on how to lose weight; they can recommend a nutritious eating plan that allows for gradual post-pregnancy weight loss.

Impact

Experts say holding on to pregnancy weight can lead to serious health consequences, putting one at risk of chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

And losing the pregnancy weight is important, not just for new moms, but for babies, too.

Going into a future pregnancy at a higher weight can put both the mother and the developing baby at risk of medical complications, such as gestational diabetes and hypertension or being overweight, Musengimana says.

Doctor Mike has tried out all kinds of popular diets and nutrition plans on his YouTube channel, including going keto and adopting a plant-based diet. For his newest video, he decided to do a deep dive into all of the advice that's out there regarding the best, fastest or most effective ways to lose weight, and subjected these pearls of wisdom to fact-checking. Here are his responses to some of the most erroneous and outrageous claims.

"Caffeine is a stimulant, so it could potentially boost your metabolism," says Mike, acknowledging that black coffee specifically doesn't have excess calories from sugar, cream etc. Additionally, black coffee can be consumed while intermittent fasting. "You're still going to be getting those same benefits, with a little stimulation."

"If you want to hang a mirror in front of your dining table because of decor, please go right ahead," says Mike. "If you're doing it so you'll hate yourself while you're eating, no!"

"I like this tip, I think it's a fairly benign tip," says Mike, who has identified portion size as a recurring problem in the eating habits of his overweight patients. A smaller plate immediately helps to reduce that amount of food, and he agrees that there is a psychological component to seeing a clean plate and feeling full. "

"I am hesitant to recommend this one," says Mike. "I feel like you can find nutrient-rich protein sources like salmon and tuna, and in addition to the protein, you're also going to get a lot other nutrients that aren't in protein powder, like omega 3 fatty acids."

Mike amends this advice slightly to "chew thoroughly", but sees the value in not eating too quickly, and giving the body time to react to your food intake. "It's really about eating to the point where you're satiated," he says.

The theory here is that the catechins in green tea work in concert with caffeine to burn fat. However, Mike warns, "It's not going to be a magical effect that you see here."

"You can lose weight without necessarily ever feeling hungry and suffering with it," says Mike, who recommends intuitive eating, where you only eat to the point that you feel satiated, but not overly full. "That way, you're not overeating calories, you're not having these tremendous portions, and you don't have to starve yourself."

"This one has been pretty much debunked by modern science," says Mike.

No matter what your goals, when it comes to nutrition and body recomposition, knowledge is power. And understanding a few key principles, like how to track macros, calories and how to exercise more effectively is especially important if weight loss is your goal.

If you want to lose body fat, gain muscle or maintain your weight, an important metric you should know about is Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Your BMR is the minimum number of calories that your body needs to function at rest. You may think you only need energy to exercise or complete tasks, but your body hs specific energy need just to complete bsic functions like brething nd regulting your hormone levels.

Your BMR is not in itself tool for weight loss, but it cn be helpful strting point for figuring out how to djust your diet nd exercise gols. The problem with lot of diets nd weight loss progrms out there is tht they re one size fits ll. But every person is different, so tking one mel pln nd pplying it to multiple people just does not work. Your BMR is clculted bsed on severl different fctors tht re personl to you, like your ge, gender, current weight nd ctivity level.

Red more:Qurntine weight gin: 5 resons tht hve nothing to do with foodn>

Keep reding to find out bout wht BMR is, how to clculte it nd how it cn help you with your nutrition nd exercise gols.

Mny people use BMR s strting point to clculte their dily clorie needs nd how to best djust them to rech their gols. In fct, mny mcro clcultors, like the populr IIFYM, incorporte BMR into their clcultions for telling you bout your clorie intke nd mcro needs bsed on your gols.

One common misconception bout BMR is tht it is the mount of clories your body burns t rest, but tht is different metric Resting metbolic rte or (RMR). Your BMR is wht energy your body needs to perform bsic functions, while RMR is the mount of clories tht your body burns while t rest. Some people use the mesurements interchngebly, but they rent necessrily the sme thing.

There re mny different clcultors vilble online tht cn clculte your estimted BMR. Note tht some of them will sk you to enter your body ft percentge, which mny people do not know. If you dont, you cn mke n estimte or use the imges provided (like IIFYM does) to guess.

Some of the best BMR clcultors:

Once you strt lerning bout your BMR, you will likely lso find informtion on TDEE (totl dily energy expenditure) since BMR is often clculted first to find TDEE.

Your BMR tells you your clorie needs, when you tke tht number plus how much you burn every dy during norml ctivity nd exercise, you get your TDEE. So relly, TDEE is the number tht you work off of for figuring out how to djust mcros or clories for body composition gols, ccording to IIFYM.

Weight loss is trickyn>, but using clcultors tht fctor in your BMR re helpful for tking more customized pproch for your clories nd mcronutrient needs. The wy tht most mcros nd BMR-bsed clcultors work is by fctoring in your TDEE with your gols.

If you wnt to lose weight, you hve to be in clorie deficit, mening the clcultor will set your dily food intke to equl less clories thn wht you burn. Sometimes when you tke n online quiz to find this number, you will be sked how fst youd like to lose weight. Then the clorie deficit will be djusted ccordingly. The fster you wnt results, the more extreme you will hve to be with cutting clories. But mny experts sy tht slow nd stedy is optiml compred to trying to lose lot of weight quickly.

If you wnt to mintin your weight insted of lose or gin, then knowing your BMR nd TDEE cn help you know how mny clories you should im to consume ech dy to mintin your weight. On the flipside of weight loss is gining muscle mss. This too requires tht you strtegiclly pproch your nutrition nd dd clories into your dy (likely in the form of protein nd crbs) to mke sure you cn gin muscle.

Diet with the highest number of global searches was actually Keto: Research | FNB News – fnbnews.com

Research released from Supplement Place analyses diet trends around the world revealing every countrys favourite diet, the most popular diets, those which have seen the biggest growth in popularity and those which we are falling out of love with.

The Worlds Favourite Diets

The Diets Gaining Popularity

The report also looks deeper into the diets which have seen the biggest increase in searches in the last five years and which have declined in popularity the most. Right at the top of the list, it was little surprise to see the Dubrow and Mind diets, as these diets were only introduced in the last five years. Behind these, we see that the Keto diet has seen an increase of over 1,300 per cent in the last five years, which outlines just how quickly it has risen to become the worlds favourite diet.

The Diets Falling In Popularity

As for the diets which weve fallen out of love with, these were almost exclusively diets which have been criticised as fads, with many actually proven to do more harm than good, so its perhaps a good thing that our interest seems to have switched away from these and more towards healthier plant and medical-based diets.

The results showed that the keto diet was certainly the worlds favourite, being the preferred diet in 105 of the 149 nations for which data was available.

Intermittent fasting proved to be the diet of choice in 28 countries, including many in central and eastern Europe, while programmes such as Slimming World were preferred in the UK and Ireland and Weight Watchers in much of western Europe.

What happens when we sweat and does sweating help in Detoxification? – MENAFN.COM

Posted: August 11, 2020 at 3:43 pm

(MENAFN - Punit)

Only humans and camels can sustain themselves in a hot climate for a long period as they have a common ability to sweat. But have you ever wondered what happens when we sweat as humans?

For us, sweating is a natural process and its primary purpose is to regulate the temperature of your body. The hypothalamus, being headquarter of your brain, regulates your temperature at 37 degrees Celsius and gets inputs from two parts of our body in two parts. E.g. First part being the heat receptors in the brain, the second part is in the skin.

Now that we know why we sweat, let''s understand why we smell when we sweat. Usually your sweat does not smell unless it comes in contact with the bacteria on your skin. As an example, for some people, their feet smell after they have taken off their socks.

Sometimes the sweat can also smell due to the type of food you eat. E.g., if you take a lot of garlic or onion or fish, your sweat may give an odour. However, it doesn''t mean that you should stop taking these food items.

The best way to avoid having sweat odour is by simply maintaining good personal hygiene and using anti-bacterial soaps when required. Bathe regularly by keeping your body clean and using anti-fungal powders for your feet but avoid using deodorants.

If you are on any sort of medication, their by-products can also secrete via your sweat. This being the reason, under dope testing the sweat of sports personnel is also checked.

Epidermis, which is the top layer of our skin, contains sweat glands and we sweat close to 500-750 ml daily. The amount of sweat your sweat glands produce can depend on factors such as the size of the sweat glands, their sensitivity, and their overall activity.

Men do not secrete sweat different from women. Sweating completely depends on the genes and not gender. So, what happens when we sweat as different people?

Fat people sweat more and thin people less is only a myth not fact. It only depends on their sweat glands. In fact some thin people can also over sweat. However, the sweat production in children is a bit lesser than in the adults.

Some women tend to produce less sweat primarily because that their sweat output is a bit lesser than the others. However, during physical activities men can produce more sweat than women.

There are a lot of myths and confusions about the connection of exercises with sweating. Many people are simply misusing and exploiting this to market their products and gain more profits.

What you need to know is that you cannot control sweating and it also not advisable to do so. You will not be able get anything by inducing more sweat from your body. However, there are some items like different types of clothing or belts which are sold in the market to help in weight loss or detoxification of your body. Remember that none of these are true.

As per a study, your body starts sweating within 8 minutes of engaging in a physical activity, as the body tends to disseminate the heat and maintain the body temperature. Of course it also depends on the environment where you are exercising as mentioned earlier. So for e.g. if you are working out in an air-conditioned environment, it will not be so hot and your body will not need to disseminate much heat. Hence you will sweat less.

When you are sweating a lot in a very hot environment, it is surely not a natural way to sweat. E.g., If you are in North of India, and you are working out in a 45 degree Celsius environment, you will surely sweat a lot, but it is not going to be of much help and it will also not provide you any additional benefits. The reason is what you are sweating out is water and not fat and hence, your body is also not getting detoxified. You are losing many salts while excessively sweating as well. You are on the other hand also cutting short your entire workout regime.

Our body can produce a lot of sweat and it can even go up to 3 litres of sweat per hour. But if you are exercising up to say 4-6 hours continuously your brain will automatically reduce the amount of sweat to avoid excessive fluid loss. You may have noticed that when the armed forces personnel exercise for prolonged periods, they sweat a lot. But if they do not replenish their fluids, their body can get dehydrated (loose water) which is not good for them as their blood can get thicker and it can even affect their heart as it has to pump more blood.

Dehydration can affect your physical as well as mental capabilities and if this goes on for a long time, it could be dangerous for your health. A workout or physical activity for around 10 hours in a hot environment can excrete close to 5-6 grams of sodium from a body and if it not replenished with fluids, the performance of the individual can decline having an adverse effect on their health.

In a general nutrition review of 2015, if you exercise in a very hot environment and even if your dehydration sets in close to 2-4%, there is no major affect in your power or strength, however there is an affect in your endurance. This does have a detrimental result in sports. Hence it is important to replenish your fluids and salts, if you are in any sort of sports.

Many sports drinks in the market are great to quench your thirst while you are exercising in a very hot environment or excessively sweating. They help in replenishing all kinds of salts like potassium, chloride, carbohydrates as well as sugars in your body with the right quantity. They also get quickly absorbed in your body and are perfect to help you enhance and sustain your exercise or workout performance.

There is another myth about sweating and weight loss and their connection. Since a long time, and even today, many people wear heavy clothing in hot environment to do various kinds of exercises or even for running. If you ask them the reason for doing this, and how is it helping them? They will say that it helps them in weight loss. This is a rather silly answer and if you further question them how it is going to help them, they will tell you that as they are sweating more and it means it will help them in weight loss or detoxifying. These are definitely not right concepts. These are all learnt from the internet and don''t have any validity.

Now days you also see the word ''detox'' everywhere including celebrities promoting products like apple cider vinegar to have in the morning or have more water for detoxification! There are similar myths about excessive sweating as well.

Another type of a myth has developed where people feel that sweating reduces their attraction or style. Quite shockingly, many girls come to gym with makeup to look good and also reduce sweat. Using such makeup is not only advisable as it is stopping the skin to sweat naturally, but it can also result in acne and cause scars over time. If you wish to know more about how makeup during a workout is actually harming your skin more, please read my Book

Normal level of sweating is a middle path between the two extremes of either excessively sweating for weight loss and detoxification or not sweating at all. It is a natural process and you have no benefit by increasing it. The commonly known fitness myth - ''the more you sweat the more calories you burn'' is not a fact.

Sweating will only regulate your body temperature or cool it down. If you are sweating, it will only ensure that your body will bring its temperature to 37 degree Celsius. It doesn''t work any other way. So, using all kinds of heavy clothing or running in a hot climate will be of no use as you will only be losing water. '' If you weigh yourself after the exercise or workout, you may have lost two kilograms but that is only water . '' You will gain this weight after you drink water or fluids. So, you are not losing fat at all.

There are many slimming centers and dietitians out there who are cheating you as they know that you are not much aware of the difference between fat loss and water loss and don''t know what happens when you sweat actually.

Please understand that water loss can happen by many ways. When you go on a low carbohydrate diet, your body will start secreting water through urination. So, it becomes easy for your dietitian to show that you are losing weight. Sometimes the dietitians will also give you completely wrong advice of reducing salt in your diet which in effect will also reduce the water in your body as salt contains water. This can even leave you completely dehydrated.

So, you will not be burning fat here, but losing water. Although your weighing machine will show a reduction in your weight, you will believe that you are losing weight and not just losing water.

Please note that your body undergoes weight fluctuation daily for about 1-2 kilograms from morning to evening. It is not a major thing; rather it is a normal method of your body to regulate your weight and water. So, it is not really showing anything to you. ''Hence, the concept offered by some misguiding slimming centers for encouraging low salt or low carbohydrate diet along with other dehydration methods is a very bad indication of the health and fitness industry and it should be banned.''

But they are operating even today as many people are not even aware of the basic things they should do with their bodies. Read my on Amazon Kindle about All that you would want to Know about Sweating and It''s Myths to gain the information that is not available to others to break the pattern of making wrong choices.

It is common that most people are running behind the word ''weight loss''. It is important to remember that if you wish to be fit and not just thin, then you must focus on fat loss and not water loss. The difference between fitness and thinning down is that when you are chasing the word ''weight loss'' you are chasing to become thin which is not going to benefit your body as it is a temporary water loss.

This takes a lot of hard work, dedication, pain tolerance, patience and time which maximum people don''t have.

But people want overnight results. Think about it that if you are a student, do you think you can get good marks simply by giving excuses, taking tuitions, using guides, taking short cuts or cheating? You will surely need to put in the hard work to learn the subjects well to get good scores, right? The entire world needs to do hard work and in every aspect of life. You can get the right result from something simple and difficult, yet you keep running away from it and you don''t ever get any good results.

This is the reason, many people in this world are waiting to take advantage of you and sell false things to you e.g. the dietitians who are there to give you stupid fat diets and also the slimming centers who know that you will not do that one simple thing called hard work.

'' Given above understanding, please note that if you are excessively sweating, you are only losing water but also not losing any fat . It is only exhaust you and nothing else will happen to you.''

There is however a need at times to lose fat quickly for a special reason. E.g., where boxers, body builders or sports personnel need to attain a certain weight category temporarily

Some people at times undertake extreme methods to lose water and lose weight in a short run like wearing heavy clothing, low carb or low salt based diets. But these are to achieve a small goal. However, in the long term, it is very harmful. So, you must get back to normal as soon as you can if you are taking these measures for a shorter duration. Some candidates are also advised to go for water loss to get selected in the defense.

But for normal people in normal life these kinds of weight loss procedures have no relevance. If you are steaming yourself and believing that you are detoxifying your body or losing fat, please note that it is nothing but water loss.

Many media companies along with the slimming centers and dietitians are involved in spreading some misguided concepts about weight loss and detoxification. You may see on the television some instances where these companies are selling some sort of belts to aid excessive sweating and lose fat. So you must ask these people what is the link between fat burn and sweating and why we sweat.

They usually ask you to sweat more by using these belts, oils, gels which will aid in sweating. When you will check your weight, you will see a half a kilogram of weight loss as you have mainly lost water and not fat.

These companies are very smart, and they are taking advantage of your fears and your lack of right information to harm your bodies in this process besides wasting your money. They don''t have any ethics but only want to earn money. That''s all. They only want daily customers who see their products and those who don''t know about these products, buy these products and they are happy with it. By chance if some people get to know and it is exposed, by then they would have got another stupid fad product in the market.

Hence, please understand there is no connection or comparison between sweating and weight loss. Sweating does not lead to weight loss. If you spend some time in understanding more about why we sweat, you will know that sweating is a natural process to cool your body and that is it!

There are also many fitness equipment and supplement companies that are promoting the concept of detoxifying and losing weight by excessive sweating . They use words like ''detoxifying'' or ''weight loss'' which has no connection with sweating.

Another concept that was introduced many years back was ''Hot Yoga'', where you are asked to do yoga in a closed and hot environment so that your body sweats more and the reason given is that it will help you to detoxify your body more. If you have understood why we sweat and what happens when we sweat, you will also understand easily that there no link between this and the concept of yoga. It is rather stupid to link detoxification and hot yoga. If you are getting any benefits, you are getting it from yoga. ''So, there is no relevance to doing yoga in a hot environment and detoxification.''

Yoga is an ancient and deep science and if someone is misusing yoga in such a way, he is using it as a criminal. They are exploiting this beautiful science and many people now days have started using it the way they want. When people give 3-4 fancy names along with yoga like power yoga or hot yoga, these are nothing. Yoga is yoga and that is it. Various forms of yoga have been developed over centuries but there is a very strong science behind them. In the past 10-15 years, the names that have been developed are all self-made names and they do not have any scientific connection.

The purpose of sweating is to cool the body while your body parts liver and kidneys manage the detoxification process. The studies below disprove the myth that there is a connection between sweating and detoxification.

Study 1: In 2018, a journal in environmental international, some Canadian researchers did a study, as earlier seen that when you sweat, you not only secrete water, but also a lot of electrolytes, salts, amino acids, metabolites like pyruvate, lactate, and nitrates along with many other elements and minerals. Using this concept and many older ones, many people say that this process is detoxification.

Study 2: However as per another research, the real toxins are POPs or Persistent organic pollutants. The environmental toxins that come under POPs are insecticides and pesticides. These go inside your body and store themselves in your fat. This means that they are lipophilic or they bind easily with fat. According to this fact, whenever you are losing fat, you tend to detoxify more than when you are losing water. ''Hence this proves that detoxification has no link to sweating.''

Even after sweating excessively by doing either hot yoga or steam or sauna, you are only able to excrete 0.024% of the toxins from your body. So, however much you will do, it will not help as by simply going out once again, you will inhale more toxins. Hence, you are just wasting your time by exposing your body to extreme environments, and thinking that you are going to detoxify your body by doing so. Hope this brings clarity of what happens when we sweat excessively and how it affects detoxification.

Using many strange therapies for detoxification has come in to light recently. A few extreme cases even lead to death. A similar case came out in the year 2011 when a 35 year old Canadian woman died during this process. They had her wrapped in mud and plastic to help her sweat intensively. She had gone through this therapy in a spa in Quebec. You will be surprised to know that the reporters found her body wrapped in mud, blanket and plastic wrap inside of a cardboard box. She stayed there for around 9 hours so that she can undergo excessive sweating. So, by now you would have found out that such kind of practices can be extremely harmful for your body and you must surely hesitate from undergoing these without an approval from your health practitioner or refer to Punit Dhawan''s book for such instances that you must avoid.

We hope these facts have helped clarify what happens when we sweat and that sweating does not lead to detoxification.
