In a 60-game MLB season, one thing is certain it’s going to get late early – Press Herald

Posted: July 3, 2020 at 12:45 am

When the baseball season starts in just over three weeks what a phrase to type, even timidly put aside the old notion that all 30 teams begin the year 0-0. Rather, theyll all be 51-51 on even footing, with an insane, unpredictable, perhaps unfair but certainly unprecedented 60-game sprint to go.

(Note: For the purposes of this column, normal and healthy skepticism about whether even a 60-game season can be successfully contested in the midst of a global pandemic will be put aside. Lets have some faith that this can be pulled off, just so we might have some fun.)

Heres what we have to accept: The season will be unlike any in history. The novel coronavirus has deemed it so. So dont place on it the expectations that come with the marathon of 162 games. Is 60 games fair? After 60 games a year ago, the Washington Nationals were 27-33. The next day, when they notched another victory and still had more than 100 games to play, slugger Juan Soto said: Its about time. Its our time now.

Wait that long this year, Juan, and youll be home for October, rather than a hero in it.

There is no early in this season. In baseball, losing three straight games is inevitable even for the best teams. The Houston Astros won 107 games last year but lost seven straight once and five straight another time. Think about it this way: A seven-game losing streak in the truncated 2020 season will be like losing 19 in a row in a normal year.

Each night is still a baseball game nine innings that somehow carry more than twice as much weight as a game in any other year. Even previous seasons interrupted by labor disputes most notably 1981, 1994 and 1995 included more than 100 games. What limits our lives now is unlike anything that has limited them in more than a century. So what awaits us in baseball has never been attempted.

First off: no fans. Before we figure out what thats like, you know what stinks? The Astros, those cheaters, they were going to get booed out of every ballpark they entered all summer. Eighty-one times, they would have been heckled right back to their hotels. Shoot, they were due in Washington for a World Series rematch this coming weekend, over the Fourth of July. Now? The pandemic already made their sign-stealing scandal seem less important. But we wont have our all-American right to stand up, jeer and be heard.

Baseball is often criticized, with some legitimacy, for being stuck in another era, too slow to play each night and too slow to adjust over time. To cure that, think of this season as a baseball lab, with plenty of room for experimentation. There are new rules joining the three-batter minimum that pitchers must face that was already coming this season that the purists will surely hate.

Hey, purists (looks in mirror): Relax. By definition, this season cant be like all the others. So dont try to apply other seasons to this one. Lets see how these tweaks feel.

The National League will have a designated hitter. Somehow I have grown to enjoy having two leagues with two sets of rules even though it doesnt make logical sense and I generally prefer the machinations involved when pitchers have to hit (double switches and the like). But we should probably get used to this.

Its quite possible we have seen our last pitcher penciled into a starting batting order. How? Well, who knows what rules will be in place for a 2021 season that could also be altered by the coronavirus. Plus, the DH could be installed in both leagues during the negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement following that season. (Shhhh. Dont tell Max Scherzer.)

The weirdest change, of course, is the alteration of extra-inning games. Top of the 10th, and a runner automatically starts on second base. How did he get there? Well, for statistical purposes, he reached via error (though no error will be charged), because then the pitcher on the mound wont be docked an earned run if he allows that runner to score. (He would, however, be assigned a loss if the runner scores and his team cant counter in the bottom half. This makes further ridiculous the idea of pitcher wins and losses as a meaningful statistic, but thats another column.)

Ill admit: Im not crazy about this rule. Seems contrived. Plus, according to data from the essential Baseball-Reference.com, of the 208 extra-inning games in 2019, 91 nearly 44 percent ended in 10 innings. Is putting a runner on second for both teams going to cause games to finish more quickly? Seems dubious.

There are bound to be some statistical oddities. Ted Williams was the last player to hit at least .400 .406 in 1941. (Note: Batting average is another junk statistic that tells us little, but thats another column.) The closest someone has come since was 1994, when Tony Gwynn hit .394. But theres an asterisk there, because Gwynns San Diego Padres played only 117 games before the players went on strike, killing the postseason and his run at .400.

Rod Carew was hitting .402 at the All-Star break in 1983. (Oh, thats a reminder: Therell be no all-star break this year.) Stan Musial hit .403 before the break in 1948. After the Nats first 38 games in 2016, Daniel Murphy was hitting .400. Maybe someone could do it. But would it should it count as the first since Williams?

Other individual outliers await us, for sure. A starting pitcher with a sub-1.00 ERA? Over the 12 starts thatll likely be the maximum, its conceivable. Pedro Martinez posted a 0.99 over the first 12 starts of his historic 2000 season.

Whats a good team record? We know over a normal season 90 wins almost always gets you into the playoffs, and 100 wins is exceptional. Since World War II, the best 60-game records were the 2001 Seattle Mariners at 47-13 and the 1953 and 1998 New York Yankees at 46-14.

Those marks, when applied over a full season, represent 127 and 124 wins, respectively. They are clips that are not sustainable.

But you know what? In 2020, they wont have to be sustained. The winning percentage that it takes to get to 90 wins in a normal season is .556. Apply that to a 60-game season, and its somewhere between 33-27 and 34-26. The regular ebbs and flows will feel like jerks on the steering wheel. Each series, each game, is going to matter more.

Someone (I cant remember who) once pointed out that more than any other sport, baseball is a grind. Winning is as much about survival over time as it is about excelling in the moment.

What lies ahead this summer is something of a jaunt. Is 60 games enough to determine a division champion? Doesnt matter, because 60 games will determine six division champions. Training camps havent even opened yet, and it already feels late in the season. Thats because it is. Might as well embrace it.

Vibrant Med Spa adds medically supervised weight loss to its list of services in Kentucky – Massachusetts Newswire

Posted: July 3, 2020 at 12:44 am

CRESTWOOD, Ky., Jun 30, 2020 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) A medical aesthetics practice near Louisville, Kentucky is branching out beyond its usual cosmetic treatments to incorporate a new program geared toward weight loss and weight management. Vibrant Med Spa recently announced the addition of its new Wellness Through Weight Management Program to aid clients in reaching their weight loss goals.

Led by owner Erica Chowning, APRN, FNP-C, and Ashley Wilhoite, BSN, RN, the new program features private, individualized assessments and tailored plans to help people implement consistent, healthier habits into their daily lives.

Chowning and Wilhoite said the most important aspect of the program is the life-coaching element to help people stay on track.

We dont just hand you the tools and send you on your way, Chowning said. We essentially partner with you and offer a warm, nurturing environment in which youre bound to thrive.

Wilhoite, who was recently hired by Chowning to oversee the program, brings more than 15 years of nursing experience and both professional and personal knowledge of fitness and nutrition. She is also currently enrolled in a graduate program at Northern Kentucky University and will soon graduate as Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

Wilhoite said her knowledge of mental health will be a valuable tool in helping clients navigate themselves through the often overwhelming task of healthy weight loss.

A lot of the nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices are mental, she said. Every person, man or woman, likes to feel attractive. When people have the assistance of someone to keep them up to speed and to keep them accountable, just someone to be there with them and work as a team to get it done, I truly think its a great benefit.

Emphasis will also be placed on diet, exercise, supplements, medications, and injections geared toward boosting the bodys metabolic effect. All these elements, Chowning and Wilhoite say, will be specifically tailored to fit each clients individual needs. The whole process will begin with a 7-day detox program and include regular weigh-ins and coaching sessions.

Getting people to understand and know that its a process, its a journey, its a lifestyle change, and its just not going to be this fast, quick fix is very important, Wilhoite said. Because those usually end in disappointment. It really is about healthy eating and being active. And were going to help them every step of the way.

For more information on the new program, call (502) 618-0995 or visit https://www.vibrantmed.com/.

Moody’s Turns Bearish On Oil Demand Growth – OilPrice.com

Posted: July 3, 2020 at 12:44 am

Billions of people spent the last few months in a lockdown of some form or another with travel bans or severe restrictions in place. Some warn that this will be our new normal. And this new normal could accelerate a shift away from hydrocarbons as the single most popular source of energy.

COVID-19 lockdown experience of reduced commuting and business travel, alongside better air quality and family time, may deliver lasting changes in energy consumption, Moodys said in a recent report. These changes, the rating agency went on, will combine with slow and labored economic recovery to depress energy demand, both in the business world and among households.

As demand for oil falls, Moodys said, slower economic growth, increased use of alternative fuels for transportation, electric vehicles, and better fuel efficiency will add their own weight on oil demand. And as new behavioral patterns become permanent, this weight on oil demand will also become permanent.

It is still early days, however. Nobody knows really how much people will change their traveling and commuting habits as a result of the pandemicstill very much in full swingand how much oil demand will be permanently lost. But one thing is certain: with CO2 emissions on track to post an annual decline this year thanks to the lockdowns, governments bent on building a cleaner energy future for their nations will seek to seize the opportunity to advance their agenda, striking when the irons hot.

Already the EU is trying to tie up its pandemic recovery financial aid package with green targets. The package has yet to be agreed by all members, and internal divisions run deep, but there is a strong ambition to make Europes energy a lot greener than it is now. But Europe is no longer a key market for oil demand. Its Asia that oil producers look to for robust demand and demand growth.

There is bad news for Asia, too. Asian economies have been battered by the coronavirus to the extent that their economies will register almost no growth this year. Economies in East Asia, for instance, are seen growing by a meager 0.5 percent, according to the World Bank. South Asian economies will not grow at all: for them, the WB sees a contraction of 2.7 percent.

Europes economy will also contract, of course, by a sizeable 4.7 percent--the same rate as Central Asia.

Asia was the key market for the global oil industry because of its fast and robust economic growth. This growth wont be showing up to the oil party this year, even if reports of China ramping up its oil consumption abound. Already there are expectations that Chinas oil import rate will slow during the third quarter in the latest sign yet that nothing lasts forever. Related: Are Oil Bulls In For A Disappointing July?

But things may already be past the point of no return for oil. In fact, according to Boston Consulting Group, peak oil demand has been passed, and the coronavirus pandemic has only made this more obvious.

In a report, BCG noted how disproportionately hard oil and coal were hit in terms of demand, unlike renewable energy, the demand for which continued to grow throughout the lockdowns. Of course, a lot of the demand loss for oil was because of the virtual halting of global passenger air traffica sector where renewables are not yet a viable alternative to fossil fuels, so they could not be affected by events. But air transport was not the whole picture.

BCG, like Moodys, cites the slow global economic recovery from the crisis as a fundamental factor in oil demand changes ahead. But it also notes the green recovery plans of governments and similar scenarios of international energy authorities. By modeling the impact of the pandemic on fossil fuel demand, BCG analysts revealed that the only scenarios where oil demand recovered to growth mode were the ones that featured no green recovery measures at all.

These are hardly the scenarios that will play out. But regardless of the scenario, it will be the transportation sector that will make or break future oil demand, according to both BCG and Moodys.

Whether and to what extent oil demand recovers will depend largely on how quickly demand in the transportation sector improves, especially in China, the groups analysts said in their report.

Moodys, too, modeled the impact of Covid-19 on oil demand under two scenariosa fast recovery and a slow one. Under the first scenarioa fast economic recoverysome 2 million bpd of oil demand is to be displaced by EVs and improved fuel efficiency in ICE cars by 2025.

Meanwhile, the total loss of demand for 2020 would be 3 million bpd. Under the second scenario of slow economic recovery, 5 million bpd would be lost in oil demand this year, and may well never be regained as a result of changed human behavioral patterns and continued slow economic growth.

It looks like under the most realistic scenarios, oil demand growth is all but doomed. The only question seems to be just how quickly or slowly it will decline from this point on. Large oil producers may want to revisit their long-term plans.

Man shares before-and-after photos of 60lb weight loss due to coronavirus – The Independent

Posted: July 2, 2020 at 4:46 am

A 40-year-old man who competes in athletic courses has shared before-and-after photos showing the shocking impact coronavirus had on his body.

Ahmad Ayyad, who lives in Washington DC, first began experiencing flu-like symptoms on 11 March. Just days later, Ayyad became Johns Hopkins Hospitals first Covid-19 patient to be placed on a ventilator, after testing positive for the virus.

Over the next 25 days, during which time Ayyad was heavily sedated and often delirious, he lost more than 60 pounds.

Sharing the full story, not just the headlines

According to Johns Hopkins, which published an interview with Ayyad after he was discharged, he weighed 215lbs when he was first admitted to the hospital.

Nearly a month later, he woke up from his medically induced coma in the hospitals intensive care unit to find that he weighed just 153lbs.

Ahmad Ayyad shares photo following battle with coronavirus (Instagram / Ahmad Ayyad)

The day I woke up I was 153 pounds, he said. My legs and arms were skinny and my chest was gone. I couldnt believe how hard it was to just get to the edge of the bed and stand.

According to the athlete, who played basketball several times a week, lifted weights and regularly competed in obstacle courses that required him to climb walls and carry heavy objects before he got sick, he had to relearn how to walk and talk during his recovery.

The virus also took a toll on his organs, according to the hospital, which notes that when Ayyad was discharged on 22 April, he still had a blood clot in his left arm and damage to his heart and lungs.

While Ayyad has since started gaining back some of the muscle he lost while in the hospital, his experience has left a lasting impact on both him and the doctors who treated him.

He is a very athletic fit individual and hes young and so my first thought was Wow if this can happen to him and he can be this sick, this can happen to anyone. It really opened my eyes, Dr Natalie West, Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician at Hopkins told WMAR.

Ayyad reiterated the reminder, telling CNN: People are acting like its gone. Its not. Wear your mask. Dont gather in big groups. Take care of yourself and the people around you.

Take it seriously. Its not a joke. It can kill you, even if you think youre healthy and immune to it. Youre not.

Yo Gotti Reveals A Massive Weight Loss Of 40 Pounds – Celebrity Insider

Posted: July 2, 2020 at 4:46 am

Yo Gotti managed to make some big changes in his life, dropping a whopping 40 pounds and adding $40 million to his bank account. On his Instagram, the rapper showed off his brand new physique and lifestyle.

Hot New Hip Hop says that when Yo Gotti was 39-years-old, he celebrated his big win in the music business by buying $1.3 million worth of new cars.

The performing artist claims he recently made $40 million, so while $1.3 million in vehicles seems like a lot to the average person, to Yo Gotti, its not. In a new picture revealed on his social media account, the rapper flaunted his brand new abs, which are clearly more visible than they used to be.

Yo Gotti isnt the only rapper to experience a dramatic lifestyle change either. This past month, Gucci Mane posted an image of himself from earlier in his career when he was much heavier and less healthy.

Gucci Mane joked that he was so fat back then, and while many of his fans were proud of his success, others found a way to make it negative. Social media commenters suggested that while Gucci is doing better than he ever has, apparently, his music isnt as good as it used to be.

One social media commenter wrote, the old Gucci Mane, the chubby one, made a lot better music than the new one. I miss the old you. Whether you like his music or not, this wont be the first time that a rapper or a performing artist was criticized for losing weight.

Adele, the singer-songwriter, recently revealed a massive weight loss on her social media account. Many people were thrilled to see the changes she made to her lifestyle over the last few months, however, others were upset.

People on the internet suggested that Adele shouldve felt happy with the way she was before. Moreover, some users suggested that Adele was one of the few pop-stars who are actually overweight. Her size was part of her persona.
