As You Age, Heres How Much Protein You Need to Boost Your Muscle Mass – runnersworld.com

Posted: June 27, 2020 at 12:43 pm

Previous research has shown that consuming enough protein is a good way to help with age-related declines in muscle mass. But a question remained: How much should you have every day, particularly if youre older?

Korean researchers set out to find the answer. A study just published in Nutrients looked at 96 older men and womenaged 70 to 85 yearsseparated into three groups for 12 weeks.

After having their usual protein intake recorded, one group consumed 0.8 grams per kg of their body weight in protein dailythe recommended dietary allowance (RDA). The second group had 1.2 grams per kg, and the third had 1.5 g per kg each day. All groups were asked to maintain their usual levels of physical activity.

They found that those who had increased their protein amount by just 0.54 g per kg showed significant changes in muscle mass among the men, but not among the women. However, the researchers did reference several previous studies that found links between increased protein consumption and muscle mass for women, especially those that included exercise as part of the research.

Also, they noted that other studies suggest that older women require more protein to increase muscle mass than older men because of the difference in anabolic resistancethe way protein synthesizesbetween men and women.

So how much should protein should you consume? According to this study, if youre an older man, bumping up your protein intake by just an extra 0.5 gram per kg of body weight could have a considerable effect. And if youre a woman, aim even higher.

For example, one small study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests older women could benefit from eating nearly 30 percent more protein than current nutrition guidelines recommend as a way to maintain and build muscle mass.

Increased muscle mass, which can also be boosted through regular exercise, is not just important for strength as you age, but also mobility, explained Belinda Beck, Ph.D., professor in the exercise and sport department of Griffith Universitys School of Allied Health Sciences.

[Run faster, stronger, and longer with this 360-degree training program.]

Recently, Beck led a study on older women that focused on higher-impact activity like jumping and running, and found it improved both muscle mass and bone density. She told Runners World that these are crucial for maintaining functionality as we age.

Often, were led to believe that frailty and mobility limitations are just natural outcomes of aging, and even some healthcare practitioners have that belief, she said. But it really doesnt have to be that way. It doesnt matter how old you are right now, if you start focusing on building muscle mass and bone density, you're going to see benefits.

Poultry, lean beef, fish, tofu, beans, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and lentils are a few foods you can add to your diet that are high in protein to help stop your muscle mass from declining, so you can keep running strong and injury-free for years to come.

Man shed nearly 300 pounds, credits massive weight loss with helping him beat coronavirus, find love – Fox News

Phil Kayes, 47, had been warned by doctors that his size was putting such a strain on his health he would be lucky to reach the age of 40. (SWNS)

An obese man has shed more than 294 pounds which has helped him beat coronavirus -- and find love, he says.

Phil Kayes, 47, had been warned by doctors that his size was putting such a strain on his health he would be lucky to reach the age of 40.

Kayes said he had previously resigned himself to "dying alone" - but credits his slim size with helping him find love. (SWNS)

He weighed 520.5 pounds at his biggest -- but has now managed to cut to an impressive 226 pounds in just three years.

Kayes said he was spurred into action after his mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He then embarked on his weight loss journey, during which met partner Nicole Mulholland.

Kayes said he had previously resigned himself to "dying alone" -- but credits his slim size with helping him find love.

The civil servant, from Co. Down, Northern Ireland, also believes his weight loss may have saved his life after he caught COVID-19.

He added that his survival was a "timely reminder" how important his health is.

Kayes was helped in his dramatic transformation by Slimming World, who recently crowned him their Greatest Loser 2020.

Despite its name, the competition celebrates the person with the highest weight loss among all the brand's members.

At his heaviest Kayes suffered a string of other health issues including pressure on his knees and sleep apnea. (SWNS)

Kayes said: "I was always bigger than my peers. I remember at school being called out by my PE teacher for being too big to play football.

"The weight really started to pile on though when I started university.

"My size meant that my life became increasingly insular and I made up a variety of excuses not to go out.

Id avoid gatherings like parties and weddings because I just felt so uncomfortable. I knew I wouldnt fit into a plane seat so I never traveled, even though I really wanted to.

"Apart from my job as a civil servant, I didnt really do anything except hide away and eat. It was a very lonely time."

At his heaviest Kayes suffered a string of other health issues including pressure on his knees and sleep apnea.

Kayes then realized he had to do something about his weight when his mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. (SWNS)

His shirt size was a huge XXXXXXXXL, with a 68-inchwaist.

But his main worry was that should he die in his sleep, his heavy body couldnt be removed as he lived on the third floor of his parents house.

Kayes then realized he had to do something about his weight when his mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

He said: "Mom was facing her fourth cancer battle which sadly turned out to be her last.

"The news sort of spurred me into action and I knew this time I had to try and be as healthy as I could - not just for her but for me as well.

"I was also worried that if my mom did pass away, I wouldnt be able to be one of her pallbearers, which was heartbreaking.

Kayes also credits his weight loss with helping him to meet partner Nicole, who he found on an online dating app. (SWNS)

"She died in October 2017, by which point Id lost [70 pounds]. I know shed be really proud if she could see me now -- more than [294 pounds] lighter."

Kayes has become much more active since losing all the weight -- and has started cycling again after a near three-decade absence from the activity.

He said: "Years of being overweight really took its toll on my knees and I used to take medication daily to manage the pain.

"I will still need a knee replacement at some stage, but I have certainly delayed the inevitable and made the operation itself more likely to be successful.

"When I was [518 pounds], my doctor told me it was too risky for me to have surgery because calculating the anesthetic needed for someone my size was so tricky.

"Now Ive started cycling again, I can walk without getting out of breath and I also enjoy yoga.

"Its a completely different life to the one I had before - one that is full of opportunities, friends and adventures."

Kayes also credits his weight loss with helping him to meet partner Nicole, who he found on an online dating app.

He said: "By far the best thing that has happened to me since losing weight is meeting Nicole.

"When I was bigger I couldnt imagine ever finding love and felt resigned to dying alone.

"Since meeting weve moved in together, swam in the Mediterranean Sea, been on a walking tour of Berlin and Ive learned to drive.

"There are lots more adventures we want to tick off the list and for the first time in a long time, Im excited about the future."

Is fasted cardio better for weight loss? This research might have the answer – T3

Posted: June 26, 2020 at 7:47 pm

Every weight loss topic is hotly debated and that includes whether fasted cardio is better for weight loss or not? Many believes that by depleting energy resources by fasting before runs or cycles, the body will automatically draw energy from fat sources. But is this true or just yet another urban legend and misconception?

How to speed up your metabolism naturally: top 3 tips to blast belly fat and get in shape

A research called "Body composition changes associated with fasted versus non-fasted aerobic exercise" published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition was trying to find an answer for this and divided a group of 20 woman into two groups: 10 participants exercised after an overnight fast while the other half of the group was given something to eat before the workout.

How to lose weight: 10 safe strategies for weight loss that REALLY work

Training consisted of one hour of steady-state aerobic exercise performed three days per week. The subjects of the research were provided with customised dietary plans designed to induce a caloric deficit. Nutritional counselling was also provided throughout the study period to help ensure the participants didn't cheat and eat more food than they were supposed to have.

Fasted or not to be fasted, that is the question

This is what the research paper has to say about the results: "Both groups showed a significant loss of weight and fat mass from baseline, but no significant between-group differences were noted in any outcome measure. These findings indicate that body composition changes associated with aerobic exercise in conjunction with a hypocaloric diet are similar regardless whether or not an individual is fasted prior to training."

How to avoid weight gain at home: 7 tips and essential equipment for home weight loss

In short: if you want to lose weight, it doesn't matter if you do cardio fasted or not, as long as you keep a calorie deficit and exercise regularly. As the research shows, it doesn't have to be every day either, although the participants were subjected to 1-hour long workout sessions each time which is not just just a short session for sure.

Intermittent fasting: everything you need to know from 16:8 to 5:2

It is worth noting that the research chose a peculiar way to test the theory by giving test subjects a meal either immediately before or after the exercise session, preventing us from finding out whether a sustained high-metabolic state after the workout would've helped shed fat even more or not. The sample size was also rather small (only 20 women were tested) and the gender ratio was also anything but balanced.

How to get fit when you're unfit: 5 easy strategies that mean even lazy people can be fitter and healthier

Taking this information into account, if you want to maximise weight loss doing cardio exercising, you are best off doing a workout early in the morning and having some food immediately after, preferably some protein and some carbs to aid muscle recovery. Also, as it turns out, the best time of day to workout for weight loss is early morning. Just saying.

This Man Started Biking and Lost 72 Pounds | Cycling Weight Loss – Bicycling

Posted: June 26, 2020 at 7:47 pm

Age: 49Occupation: Truck DriverHometown: Dayton, OhioStart Weight: 282 poundsEnd Weight: 210 poundsTime Cycling: 1.5 years

For years, I had promised myself that I would get healthy and lose weight. But when a routine physical with my doctor revealed to me that I was pre-diabetic, had high blood pressure, and my liver enzymes were elevated, I knew I really needed to do something. On top of that, my weight had also ballooned to 285 pounds. Hearing the doctors diagnosis was the final deciding factor in getting serious about my health.

As a truck driver, I led a sedentary lifestyle. Pair that with a diet full of fast food, red meat, and processed foods, and it all led to many health issues. I had been eating like a teenager for almost 30 years.

It was uncomfortable for me to be active at 285 pounds. I always enjoyed riding a bicycle in my youth, so I sought some advice from some shops on the best bike for me to start riding. The general advice was to start with an upright comfort bike, especially considering my weight and fitness level at the time. Physically, I couldnt ride a road bike.

I rode the comfort bike for approximately six months. Once I began to lose weight and gain fitness, I bought an entry-level road bike. Now, I ride a carbon race bike, and I try to ride at least three times a week around 50K each ride. I also complete a 100K ride on the weekend.

[Want to fly up hills? Climb! gives you the workouts and mental strategies to conquer your nearest peak.]

While I dont really consider myself to be on a diet, Ive completely cut out soda and only drink unsweetened tea, black coffee, and water. In other areas, Ive limited my intake of red meat, sugar, and white flour. Aside from those changes, my most significant dietary change has been my portion control. I still eat pizza, occasionally, but instead of eating a whole large pie, Ill have a slice or two. Now, its all about eating smart, nutritionally balanced meals. My meals typically look like this:

Continuing to improve my health and fitness motivates me. My determination and revamping my dietary habits have helped me get to where I am today. In the future, I hope to lose another 30 pounds and keep riding.

Usually people who begin their weight loss journey with a short-term attitude also have an all-or-nothing mindset. You may say no to all processed foods bread, pasta, milk, cheese, wrapped snacks, etc. This is good as long as you can control your craving, but when cant hold it any longer, you would end up overindulging on those comfort foods again. And when you realise that you had already ruined your diet, you wouldnt care anymore or start the restrictive regimen. This all-or-nothing concept also applies to exercises working out excessively to lose weight quickly and falling back again. And experts say this is a destructive cycle to be in.

Protein is extremely important for health, and especially those who trying to lose weight. Eating enough protein can increase the release of a hunger-suppressing hormone and thereby help reduce appetite. A high-protein meal can keep you full for longer, decrease calorie intake, increase metabolic rate and protect muscle mass during weight loss. So, if you are struggling to lose weight, check the protein part in your meals. A person who weigh 150 pounds, should eat between 75 and 112 grams of protein per day. If youre trying to lose weight, your protein intake should be between 90 and 150 grams a day.

Having supportive friends, family members and partner are critical to successful weight loss. One of the most common reasons for many people not being able to stick to a healthy diet is stigma. Have you ever been made fun of for eating healthy? This is especially common for weight watchers in regions where food is an integral part of the culture. When you are being ridiculed or scoffed at for eating healthy, you are likely to keep you diet plan aside for the sake of your social life. Therefore, having a solid support system is important to achieve long-term weight loss, otherwise the journey can feel lonely and intimidating.

Crazy weight loss and a mom that surprised herself in Flyers-Penguins Marathon on Ice – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Posted: June 26, 2020 at 7:47 pm

All week at NBC Sports Philadelphia, we're debating the biggest villains in Philly sports history. Today, we look atthe Flyers. You can vote here.

Picking an ultimate villain for Flyers fans?

How about a guy who basically fought a fan during a game in Philadelphia? Not a bad choice.

When thinking of players despised by the orange and black faithful, Tie Domi instantly comes to mind as does that not-so-hospitable visiting penalty box at the Wells Fargo Center.

Domi, a tough, in-your-face, penalty-minute-collecting winger who enjoyed a 16-year NHL career, scored only four goals for four points in 46 career regular-season meetings with the Flyers.

Playing the bulk of his career for the Maple Leafs, Domi made his imprint in Philadelphia with 238 career penalty minutes against the Flyers, his third most against any NHL team. He truly left his mark, though, on March 29, 2001, in a game at the then-First Union Center. After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the third period, Domi went to the sin bin and became the recipient of some heckling (and maybe more). Domi retaliated by spraying a few fans with a water bottle, prompting fan Christopher Falcone to lunge at the protective glass between the stands and the box.

As the glass collapsed, a moment was born and the mystic of Philly sports fans grew. Falcone stumbled into the box and a fracas ensued with Domi and linesman Kevin Collins in the middle of it.

Toronto's 2-1 victory became a subplot to the Domi-Falcone showdown.

To make the story crazier, Falcone opened up a lawsuit againstDomi, Collins and Comcast Spectacor. However, the beef was eventually ended. In an episode of the Spittin Chiclets podcast, Domi explained how he orchestrated the two to meet before a game in Philadelphia. They got to know each other, hashed things out and Domi said he brought Falcone to Toronto for a playoff game against the Flyers.

Don't think that the gesturefixed the whole Domi-Philly relationship.

In a fun twist, Domi's son Max was actually aFlyers fan as a kidfor apersonal and meaningful reason.

I was definitely a Flyers fan growing up, Max Domi, who now plays for the Canadiens, said in an October 2015 story by Sean Leahy on Yahoo! Sports. My dad is definitely not.

While Domi was always disliked in Philly because he often stirred the pot, he cemented his villain status with the fiasco in the penalty box.

Ironically, the city probably would have been drawn to a player like Domi if he was on the good side because the 5-foot-10, 213-pounder played bigger than his size and never backed down.

"Philly, I used to love playing there, I really did," Domi said on theSpittin Chiclets podcast. "The fans, they loved me but they hated me. I still get fan mail from Flyers fans: 'We miss you, the games aren't the same anymore.'"

Still, nobody will forget the agitator on the ice and in the box that March night during 2001.

Domi didn't just anger Philly throughout his career; he messed with its own. That's a true villain in this town.

The incredible weight loss of one of the best props in rugby history – Rugby OnSlaught

Posted: June 26, 2020 at 7:47 pm

We only just found out today about the incredible weight loss journey off Matt Dunning. A prop with one of the best flair games in the game.

Matt Dunning was a prop for the Waratahs back in the early noughties.

He was known to be a rugby player who was a back in a Props body.

The Prop made a name for himself for somehow managing to make incredible breaks despite his size

The video below shows that.

When we saw this video we were amazed to see a screenshot from a few years ago showing his incredible weightloss journey.

It turns out that Dunning the former Wallaby was extremely unhappy about the size that he was, and he wanted to do something about it.

When he was a prop for the Wallabies Matt Dunning weighed 130kg and was constantly mocked for his tubby frame.

But since retiring from rugby union the 35-year-old has lost a staggering 40kg, dropping from 25 per cent body fat to just 11 per cent in six months. What an incredible weight loss.

We found a video which shows just how much weight the former prop has lost and its quite shocking to see!

Speaking to Mail Online, he said

When I played footy I received a lot negative media stuff, but mate I havent seen one negative comment.

You think if you take photos of yourself you seem a bit up yourself but everythings been really positive.

Dunning, who played for the NSW Waratahs and the Perth Western Force before he was forced to retire in 2011 due to a neck injury, says he lost the weight by cutting down on food.

While losing weight he drank two high-nutrient shakes and ate just one meal a day, and would do cleanses four days a month.

This is brilliant to see from this.
