12 Best Meal Replacement Shakes And Bars For Weight Loss 2020 – Women’s Health

Posted: June 3, 2020 at 1:48 am

No matter what kind of nutrition plan you follow, you likely could always use a little more time to whip up a healthy and delicious meal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every. single. day. That's a lot! And you're busy! Luckily, being pressed for time and needing to eat on-the-go doesn't have to mean sabotaging your weight-loss goals with fast food meals or unhealthy, processed snacks: Meal replacement shakes are a great option when you're strapped for time or just don't feel like cooking.

However, be warned: not all shakes are created equal. If you do your research and choose wisely, you can ensure youre still eating healthy on those days when youre busy. Here, a nutritionist explains everything you need to know about meal replacement shakes and how to pick ones that will help you stay on track with your weight loss.

While whole foods are generally the best method for getting necessary nutrients, meal replacement shakes can be a convenient meal option on the go and can be nutritionally healthy too, depending on the shake, says Amanda Nicole, RDN, a registered dietitian in Los Angeles.

When purchasing a meal replacement shake, its important to take into consideration the nutritional content of the shakes, says Nicole. Some shakes can be lacking in essential vitamins and minerals you would get from eating solid food.

Store-bought shakes can also be high in added sugar, artificial sugar, or sugar alcohols. If you consume a shake that is high in sugar, it could make your blood sugar spike and then drop quickly, explains Nicole. This will give you a quick release of energy but make you feel tired shortly after.

Additionally, when you consume a meal that is high in sugar, youll likely feel hungry again shortly afterwards. Sugar alcohols in particular may cause gastrointestinal discomfort such as bloating, diarrhea and gas as well.

And consuming a lot of artificial sweetener can mess with your taste buds over time, making you crave sweeter and sweeter foods, says Nicole. When you become used to a high level of sweetness from artificial sweetener, foods that are naturally more tart in flavor, such as berries, will taste more bitter to you, adds Nicole. Basically, healthy snacks like fruits will be less likely to satisfy your sweets cravings when you're used to the taste of artificial sweeteners.

Rule of thumb: Look for meal replacement shakes that are low in added sugar, sugar alcohols, and artificial sweeteners.

Meal replacement shake can be helpful as part of a weight-loss plan for some people. They can function as a healthy option for when you need something quick, replacing what could have been a less-nutritious pick, like a fast food meal.

They can also help you eat fewer calories during the day by replacing meals that may be higher in calories, while still helping you feel full. However, if a shake doesnt make you feel satisfied (which is likely if has too much sugar and not enough protein), you may reach for more food soon after drinking it, causing you to consume more calories by the end of the day.

A big part of satisfaction from eating is chewing your food and feeling the texture in your mouth, explains Nicole. When you drink your meal, you may be seeking something to munch on soon after."

So if youre looking to lose weight with meal replacement shakes, you should opt for a shake that is high in protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep you satisfied, and low in sugar to prevent hunger pangs from hitting later. If you consume more sugar than these other nutrients, your body will store it as fat, says Nicole.

Also, you shouldnt replace more than meal per day with a shake. Otherwise, you could become deficient in vitamins and minerals from whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and meat, says Nicole.

A meal replacement shake is just that, a single meal replacement, she says. So try to only reach for them when you're really in a pinch.

There isnt a right or wrong time to have a meal replacement shake; it depends on what works best for you.

If you dont have time for breakfast or [you] work through lunch, a shake can be great during those times, she says. It can be a great alternative to breakfast, especially if you dont like to eat first thing in the morning, as breakfast gives your body enough energy to start the day."

If you dont have time for lunch, a shake could give you the energy to make it through the second part of your day, she adds. The time that you consume a shake wont impact your life in any way, and you shouldnt feel like you should sacrifice a meal with friends or family to have a shake.

Opt for a shake that is high in protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep you satisfied, and low in sugar to prevent hunger pangs from hitting later.

Meal replacement bars are another option if you dont have time for a meal, she adds. You can easily throw them into your purse, backpack, or briefcase. Real food is, again, always a more nutritious choice, but meal replacement bars can be a good substitution when you need it and you get the added satisfaction of crunch and chew, says Nicole.

If youre hungry and wait too long to eat, you could overeat at the next meal you have, so it's better to have a shake or bar than skip a meal, she says Just like with shakes, look for a bar that is high in protein, fiber and healthy fats, low in sugar, and also free of artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols.

In addition to seeking out shakes and bars that are high in protein, fiber and healthy fats, as well as low in sugar, its key to opt for those that also contain vitamins and minerals, particularly from fruits and vegetables.

All these components give you a balanced meal and keep you feeling full and satisfied for longer, says Nicole. A well-balanced meal shake or bar will include 300 to 400 calories, 15 to 30 grams of protein, 3 or more grams of fiber, and 10 to 15 grams of unsaturated fat.

Good sources of protein are whey, soy, hemp, brown rice and pea protein. Look for natural sugars, such as cane sugar, brown rice syrup or coconut palm sugar, and check the ingredients for good quality, plant-based fat from nuts, seeds, or plant-based oils, suggests Nicole.

One thing to note is that most meal replacement shakes and bars range from 150 to 250 calories. This is more like a snack, so if you're replacing a full meal with one of these lower-calorie options and still feel super hungry, make sure to have additional whole food snacks around this time as well.

This shake is perfect on the go because it doesnt have to be refrigerated until opening. It provides 20 grams of pea protein and is high in fiber, vegan, dairy-free, soy-free, and gluten-free.

This product is excellent if youre following a vegan diet, are celiac, or lactose intolerant, says Nicole. To make it a complete meal and add in some heart-healthy fats, add a handful or cup of almonds.

This shake provides 20 grams of plant-based protein from hemp, pumpkin seed, and pea protein and is blended with spinach, kale, carrots, and organic spirulina.

The shake is a great option for a meal replacement because it has 25 percent of the daily value for 11 vitamins and minerals, and its vegan, soy-free, dairy-free, and gluten-free, says Nicole. Complete this meal by having a half of banana or one slice of whole-wheat bread with a tablespoon of peanut butter.

This shake offers 20 grams of grass-fed milk protein and is vegetarian, gluten-free, soy-free, kosher, and high in calcium.

Complete this meal with an apple and a tablespoon of almond butter to give you enough fiber, carbohydrates, and healthy fats to make it a balanced meal, says Nicole.

This shake provides 20 grams of grass-fed whey and casein milk protein and is low in sugar and high in fiber. Its also lactose-free, free of hormones and antibiotics, gluten-free, soy-free, kosher, and contains no artificial sweeteners or artificial ingredients.

This shake provides 20 grams of protein from peas, pumpkin, and flax seeds and is an excellent choice if you have allergies, says Nicole. OWYN shakes are free of some of the top allergens, including dairy, soy, gluten, egg, peanuts and tree nuts. It also contains a blend of greens from broccoli, spinach, and kale. Complete this meal, like some of the others, by having a banana or one slice of whole-wheat bread with a tablespoon of peanut butter.

This vegan shake gives you 20 grams of pea protein and contains 30 percent of daily recommended values for iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium, says Nicole. Its also dairy, nut, soy, and lactose-free. Enjoy with a cup of carrots and a serving of hummus.

This shake is a great on-the-go option that doesnt have to be refrigerated. It also has 20 grams of protein from milk and Greek yogurt. Complete this meal with an apple and a tablespoon almond butter to give you enough energy and keep you full, says Nicole.

These bars have great flavor and are perfect for an on-the-go meal replacement. The bar is free of artificial sweeter or sugar alcohols and is high-fiber, gluten-free, kosher, soy-free, and dairy-free.

Enjoy with a serving of turkey jerky, a couple of slices of deli turkey, or a half serving of unsweetened Greek yogurt for extra satiety power.

In addition to containing 20 grams of protein from whey, they only have three ingredients that you can easily recognize, including almonds, honey, and whey protein isolate, plus no fillers, artificial sweeteners, or sugar alcohols. Complete this meal with a serving of vegetables such as carrots, bell pepper slices, and cucumber slices.

Nicole also likes this bar, which is from the same brand but includes a vegan protein source. These bars only have four ingredients including cashew, coconut nectar, pea protein, and lemon extract, and there are no fillers, artificial sweeteners, or sugar alcohols. Complete this meal with a serving of carrots to add more fiber to keep you full and digestive system regular.

This bar has definitely earned perfect in the name because its a complete meal that hits all the food groups, says Nicole. This refrigerated bar provides an adequate amount of protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, and fiber and is made with whole foods from fruits, vegetables, seeds, and oil, offering essential vitamins and minerals.

Since the bar has enough calories, there is no need to add any other food to make this work as a complete meal, says Nicole.

This bar only has five ingredients, including real peanut butter, peanut flour, grass-fed whey protein, brown rice syrup, and grape juice extract. Its also gluten-free, with no artificial sweeteners, no sugar alcohols, and no soy. Make this more filling by adding a hard-boiled egg, says Nicole.

Kodys first wife continued to spark split rumors with the post, as she insisted she doesnt need anyone in the caption of the photo.

The lengthy caption began: For as long as I can remember, I've been a t-shirt and jeans kinda gal. I feel my most comfortable in them, not too showy or flashy, can dress it up a little with heels and a fancy necklace, or work out in the yard with sneakers and cut offs. It's been my thing. But the world says I should improve my style.

The world says I should wear a dress. The world says I should wear lipstick. But I say, I'll do what 'I' want. If I want to wear jeans and a t-shirt all day every day, I will. If I want to wear a skirt and t-shirt with sneakers, I will. If I want to dress up for a night out, I will. If I want to wear lipstick, well, that will just never happen, be assured!

She then wrote that she doesnt need anyone but her to tell her what she should do.

8

Meri continued: I don't need anyone but ME to tell me how to dress in the morning, or how do do my hair, or heaven help me, how to do my eyebrows! I'm a woman who has lived on this earth for nearly 50 years, and I'm not afraid to say it. I've raised a daughter. I've had ups and downs. I've had crazy and amazing life experiences.

I've loved and been loved. I've felt pain and caused others pain. I've felt comforted and hopefully have been a comforter. Point is, I've LIVED. These experiences have shaped and formed me. And I'm not finished yet!

She ended the caption with: Find your style and be confident in it! Find your cause and fight for it! Find your passion and create it! YOU matter. YOU are amazing. YOU can conquer that goal. YOU can feel confident in your own skin. YOU can do hard things. YOU can do ALL the things! You got this!!

8

Followers praised Meri for her new look, as one commented: "Great picture Meri! Looks like you've lost some weight too."

A second said: "You look great Meri! You have lost a lot of weight."

A third commented: "You look beautiful!"

However, she did not disclose where she is going.

Meri sparked rumors when she posted without her wedding ring and shared cryptic quotes.

Another quote read: You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. Do the thing you think you cannot do.

Can I Eat Mangoes If I Am Trying To Lose Weight? Know A Nutritionists Reply – NDTV

Mango for weight loss: Mangoes are rich in fibre and Vitamin C

We all love mangoes! But sadly there are so many misconceptions and mythsaround this fruit that one keeps questioning whether or not to eat them. If you see the nutrition profile of mangoes - fibre, Vitamin C, copper, folate, Vitamins A, E, B5, K and B6, potassium, magnesium, manganese (the list goes on) -you will not question your choice of including them in your daily diet. However, fructose, the naturally present sugar in mangoes is what makes people doubt the king of fruits and refrain from eating them.

According to nutritionist Pooja Makhija, mangoes can be included in weight loss diet. Make sure you eat the mango and don't consume it in the form of shakes or aamras or smoothes. "Stick to eating one mango in a day. Make sure you don't eat it with your meal and it in between and enjoy one mango every day," Makhija says in her Instagram story now saved as highlights.

Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar agrees. "Mango is not just safe but recommended for people with diabetes and obesity for its rich nutrient profile. It is high on fibre, antioxidants and phytonutrients," she writes in one of her Insta posts.

Mangiferin is a bioactive compound found in mangoes. It has multiple therapeutic benefits and is used in treatment of infections, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. "Worldwide, diabetic associations recommend eating fresh and seasonal fruits including mangoes," mentions Diwekar's Insta post.

Glycemic index of mangoes is 51, which technically qualifies it as low GI food. However, each person responds differently to different foods and if you have diabetes, it is the best to consult your expert before including mangoes or any other fruit in your diet.

Rich in fibre and Vitamin C, mangoes can help in improving digestion and regulate blood lipid levels. The fruit can be beneficial for improving cholesterol levels. Mango contains a variety of vitamins, minerals and enzymes which have cardioprotective effect and can reduce risk of heart disease.

1. Eyes and skin: Zeaxanthin and carotene are two compounds which protect the eyes and skin from damage caused by free radicals and ageing.

2. Brain: B vitamins in mangoes can help in production of red blood cells that can help in improving brain function and fat burning.

3. Liver: Phenolic compounds in mangoes can help in preventing liver damage, inflammation and chronic conditions including obesity.

Go Red event to be held online – Benton Courier

Posted: June 3, 2020 at 1:47 am

The upcoming Go Red for Women online program will feature the stories of eight women from the survivor gallery, back left to right, Jennifer Siccardi, Amber Edwards, Suzette Hamilton, from left to right, Michelle Rupp, Miracle Diaz, Lisa Gaddy, Lucy Street and Katie Lea.

The Arkansas Heart Association has moved its annual Go Red for Women event online.

It will be a webinar held through Zoom from noon to 1 p.m. June 12.

"We will still have the spirit and elements of our program while safely in our own homes," Rebecca Buerkle, director of communications said, adding the health and safety of the guests is the top priority.

The Facebook event details say AHA is working to provide reliable science based information to those with cardiovascular conditions. Nearly half of all women in the United States age 20 and older have some form of cardiovascular disease.

"Go Red for Women has been wonderful to educate people about heart disease, the number one killer of women," Buerkle said.

The week before the event will be Week of Wellness beginning June 8, sponsored by Saline Memorial Hospital. Each day the Association will hold a different wellness mini-event or video.

That Monday will feature The Saline Heart Group discussing heart health.

Tuesday will feature Tenenbaum Foundation and the Arkansas Beef Council. They will share a recipe, discuss tips for choosing a healthy cut of beef and cooking tips.

Wednesday will be on stress busting and how to manage stress. That day will be led by the Saline Memorial Health Clinic.

Thursday, The Saline Weight Loss Center will discuss maintaining a healthy weight.

Also that Monday, the online auction will kick off. It will be open to anyone, even if they don't plan to join the webinar. Bidding will be open all week.

"We have some great pieces up for grabs," Buerkle said.

The items include a Gulf Shores getaway and even some men's items in time for Father's Day such as a custom shirt and chain saw.

Bid details and previews of the items will be on the Arkansas Health Association Facebook page. The auction is sponsored by Arvest Bank.

Buerkle believes now in the time of COVID-19, the AHA mission is even more vital because those with heart conditions are at a greater risk from the virus.

Even though the event will be online, Buerkle said the program will remain the same. AHA will still tell the stories of eight women from the survivor gallery, including featuring a 5-year-old named Miracle on a video.

Katie Lean, chief nursing officer for Saline Memorial, is the event chair this year and a member of the survivor gallery.

The event will include a health panel discussion.

The featured guest speaker will be Becky Comet, a season 12 contestant on "The Biggest Loser," who will share her story. She lost close to 70 pounds on the show. Buerkle said Comet's story ties in with AHA's mission.

She added it is a fight to protect mothers, sisters and friends.

All participants are encouraged to wear red, take selfies and post them online, tagging AHA.

"We want to see all that red," Buerkle said.

The national sponsor for the Go Red for Women is CVS Health. The Central Arkansas sponsors are Saline Memorial Hospital, Tenenbaum Foundation, Delta Dental of Arkansas, Arkansas Beef Council, Arkansas Life, B98.5 Radio in Little Rock and THV11.

Buerkle is sad that the event will not be an in-person gathering.

"I am excited to everyone celebrate survivors and make strides against the number one killer of women," she said.

Vitamin D and Immunity: The Sunshine Vitamin – NewsPatrolling

Posted: June 3, 2020 at 1:46 am

Most of us know that Vitamin D is essential to maintain the health of our bones. However, most of us arent aware that this amazing Vitamin has a crucial role to play in our immune system!

What is Vitamin D

Vitamin D belongs to class of fat-soluble vitamins and was first discovered along with many other vitamins in the 1920s. Unlike other Vitamins that have rich nutritional sources and can be used as such when we consume them, Vitamin D is found in limited food sources and even when ingested needs to be changed to an active form for the body to use it effectively. It is one of the only vitamins that our body produces. Vitamin D that we either ingest or produce using the UV rays from the sun passes through the liver and kidneys where it is activated. The cells of our immune system also have the capability to activate Vitamin D when needed. Essentially in many ways Vitamin D acts like a hormone!

Immune boosting effects:

The immune system forms an essential defense mechanism of the human body against invading viruses, bacteria and other foreign organisms, hence providing protection.

The last decade has seen a lot of research that has brought to light the role of Vitamin D the optimal functioning of the immune system. Receptors known as Vitamin D receptors (VDR) have been foundon various cells other than those in the bone and gut proving that this Vitamin does a lot more than improving bone health. These receptors have been found in the bone marrow, breast, colon and immune cells too.

Studies have made it clear that adequate levels of Vitamin D in the body confers better immunity against viruses such as the influenza virus and viruses and bacteria that cause upper respiratory infections leading to less sick days. These viruses and bacteria upon entry in our body are confronted by cells called macrophages which in simple terms swallow the microbes and destroy them. This destruction of microbes is enhanced by the activity of vitamin D. It has also been shown that Vitamin has a protective effect in many conditions like pneumonia and ARDS.

In addition, it is becoming increasingly clear that adequate levels of Vitamin D are also essential for slowing the progression of autoimmune diseases (these happen when our immune system appears to attack our own cells) like Rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease etc.

Vitamin D sources:

Get more Sun: with the mantra of the day being stay indoors its becoming difficult to catch the sun. A sunny balcony, a porch, cycling in the sun or just a walk are ways that we can soak up the goodness.

Diet: Mushrooms, milk fortified with Vitamin D,eggs, fish are good sources.

Supplements: Vitamin D supplements are easily available at your doctors recommendation. A small daily dose in the form of suspension or a tablet can be prescribed especially if finding the sun is difficult.

Safe sun exposure:

While sun exposure is essential to produce Vitamin D it is important to be safe whilst doing so. The duration of sun exposure depends on the amount of melanin in the skin too. People with more melanin (darker skin tones) will need longer in the sun than those with less melanin.

The recommendation is to expose at least 25% of bare skin (nosunscreens please) for at least 30 mins to the sun between 11-2 pm or longer for the morning sun for adequate exposure to UVB rays and production of Vitamin D. 3-4 times a week should suffice

Vitamin D recommendation:

The current recommended daily allowance of Vitamin D for people with preexisting normal levels is 400 to 800 international units per day. Higher doses may be suggested by your doctor if your levels are low. A blood test is generally required to determine the level of Vitamin D in your body before higher doses can be safely suggested.

Vitamin D toxicity:

Taking high doses of Vitamin D can cause toxic effects given the nature of this Vitamin. Hence it is extremely important not to take higher doses without consulting your doctor

Go ahead and get the immunity boost that you need just from soaking up the sun! Stay safe and maintain social distancing whilst you do so!

What Science Says About the Health Benefits of Plant-Based Diets – Discover Magazine

Posted: June 3, 2020 at 1:45 am

Whether to eat meat or not can be a very personal decision. The choice is often tied to our beliefs about humans relationship with animals, as well as to our upbringing, values and identity

There are multiple reasons that someone might decide to reduce their meat consumption or ditch it from their diets completely. And over the last decade, theres been a growing trend of people going meatless all the time, or just sometimes, for their health. Its a shift that raises some important questions: Is a diet without meat truly better for you? And, if so, what is it about plant-based diets that our bodies love?

The answer isnt as simple as saying meat is bad and plants are good.

Plant-based diets come in many stripes. And though the diet plans that completely omit meat probably get the most attention, theyre relatively uncommon. Around 3 percent of Americans consider themselves vegans, and 5 percent consider themselves vegetarians, according to some reports.

Most vegetarians eat a lacto-ovo diet, which means they eat fruits and veggies, beans, nuts, grains and soy, as well as animal byproducts like eggs, dairy and honey. Vegans are vegetarians that dont eat anything that comes from an animal. But there are some beegans out there vegans who eat honey.

Other plant-based diets incorporate some meat or fish: The pescatarian diet is similar to the lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, but with the addition of fish. Theres also the flexitarian diet, which encompasses a spectrum of semi-vegetarianism: heavy on plants and light on meat and animal products. Even the Mediterranean diet is technically plant-based, and its one of the most-studied and deemed healthy ways of eating.

A number of studies have shown that a diet low in meat is linked to longer lifespans. But the matter is far from settled, as some studies havent found a significant difference in life expectancy between meat eaters and vegetarians.

But there is growing evidence that plant-based diets are associated with benefits like lower blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and reduced body weight. These improved health measures often translate to less risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other diseases. Eating more whole, plant-based foods could help lower the risk of some health conditions, and might even help people live longer. But researchers also suspect that vegetarians are more health-conscious overall so, theyre likely to be drinking and smoking less and moving their bodies more than the general population which complicates some study results.

Still, emerging research points to a potentially helpful role of plant-based diets in managing some chronic health conditions. For instance, some studies suggest that plant-based diets veganism in particular may help control rheumatoid arthritis.

A 2018 review of nearly a dozen studies most of them randomized controlled trials, the gold standard in research found that eating a plant-based diet can help manage type 2 diabetes. People who followed a plant-based diet experienced greater improvements in blood sugar and cholesterol levels, body weight and mental health compared with people who did not follow plant-based diets. Some participants who avoided animal products were able to reduce or eliminate the use of diabetes medication, the review found.

Beyond that, preliminary research shows the MIND diet (MediterraneanDASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) can help slow cognitive decline and rates of Alzheimers in old age.

The idea that fruits and vegetables are good for us is so ingrained in us that we dont really give it much thought. But what is it about plant-based meals that make them healthful?

According to GingerHultin,a Seattle-based registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, plant-based diets tend to be lower in saturated fat and higher in fiber, vitamins and minerals.

But linking nutrition to health effects is where things get a bit tricky. A 2019 review in Nature found evidence that supports many plant-based diet health claims, but they were unable to uncover the specific mechanisms that delivered the benefits. In other words, they werent sure the if the benefits were related to nutrition, caloric intake, avoidance of animal products or other factors you might associate with a plant-based diet.

But perhaps the answer is rooted in our microbiomes. Increasingly, scientists are learning that whats good for our health comes down to whats good for our microbiomes. Research is revealing that a diet high in fiber seems to nourish the trillions of bacteria living inside our guts that impact our health. A 2019 review published in Frontiers in Nutrition concluded that diet is the most significant factor that influences microbiome composition. Plant-based diets encourage greater microbial diversity the hallmark of a healthy gut. Lower microbe diversity has been linked to conditions such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Humankinds relationship with meat is complicated. We evolved the ability to eat meat, and it changed us. Yet meat is not essential to the human diet, Hultin says.

The only vitamin in the human diet that must come from animal sources is B12 the result of an evolutionary glitch. But this requirement can be met with a supplement. And in case youre wondering, protein deficiencies are uncommon in America, even among vegetarians, Hultin added.

These are not diets where you just eat salad, for example. If a person is hungry or unsatisfied, or [is experiencing] low energy on a plant-based diet, theyre missing something, said Hultin. Its important to know how to meet your needs on a plant-based diet, just like you would on an omnivorous diet.

Undeniably, many people simply like the taste and texture of meat and cannot imagine a Thanksgiving without turkey or a barbecue without burgers. And a healthy diet can certainly include animal protein. But surveys show were leaving little room on our plates for much else these days.

Annual red meat and poultry consumption in America has reached 222 pounds per person on average an amount that has doubled since the 1960s. Only 1 in 10 American adults gets enough fruits and vegetables in their daily diets, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found. The recommendation is 1.5 to 2 cups of fruit and 2 to 3 cups of vegetables per day.

Americans eat a lot of meat; more than they need, most likely. One of the biggest problems here is that consuming more than the recommended intake of protein in the form of high-fat meats can easily exceed saturated fat recommendations, Hultin says.

If youd like to reap some of the health benefits of a plant-based diet, you may not need to go cold turkey on meat.

I often recommend experimenting with familiar foods that just dont have meat. For example, instead of a soup with meat in it, try one with lentils in it. Instead of taco meat, try crumbled tempeh. If you order Thai food to go, order it with tofu instead of meat, Hultin says. Think simple swaps. Make meals that you enjoy but just with different ingredients, so foods are familiar and delicious but also meet your goals of being more plant-based.
